Contemporary Neoclassical Apartment In São Paulo Redefines Clean Lines

The ultra modern AQH apartment located in São Paulo, Brazil is one of those spaces that truly redefines a genre of living. Merging clean lines with open natural lighting, the home manages to avoid the minimalist trap of looking overly sterile.

Coletivo Architects who looked after the home’s design deserve a lot of the credit for this with an interior that uses knocked down walls to create a better flow and flood in of natural lighting. From here on in, the 500 square metre space utilises the best in nature to really light up the balcony with a wall of green that engulfs an outdoor seating area.

Other key elements of the home includes designer artwork, exposed concrete ceilings, limestone, stainless steel and oakwood. There’s even a private television room which can be closed off from the main living area to free up space. This is nature in the big smoke done right.

Puma Invents Fitness Training Robot To Help You Run Faster
Puma Invents Fitness Training Robot To Help You Run Faster

As wearables and smartwatches become the craze amongst the fitness fanatics of today, Puma decided to take a step back for a completely different approach to personal fitness tracking.

Welcome to BeatBot, an automated robot which acts as a training buddy on the track who can whoop your ass in line when no other human is around. The visual target, which looks like a box on wheels, acts much like what racing dogs chase around a track.

The only difference being the level of connectivity and intuition whereby the BeatBot can race, time and then relay the pace you need to beat. It works by having the runner input their target time and distance before the BeatBot paces itself with programmed metrics over various runs. The robot is even fast enough to mimic Usain Bolt’s 44km/h track record which is a pretty damn good feat in itself for an R/C car with a brain.

The Puma BeatBot is a result of a collaboration between NASA robotics engineers, MIT students and ad agency JWT. Inside the small device resides two GoPro cameras, nine infrared sensors and Arduino programmed wheels .

For now the Puma BeatBot is only available to the brand’s sponsored athletes, so no you can’t race it down at your local park.

Maker's Mark Old Fashioned Week: Join A Celebration Of The Classic Cocktail
Maker's Mark Old Fashioned Week: Join A Celebration Of The Classic Cocktail

The following article has been sponsored by Maker’s Mark

Fashion Week? So 2015. This year a new must-do event is taking centre stage on Sydney’s social calendar: Maker’s Mark Old Fashioned Week.

Old Fashioned Week will see Maker’s Mark partner with some of the best bars and bartenders across the city for a series of events celebrating the Old Fashioned cocktail.

The festivities kick off on May 12. In anticipation, we’re looking back on the brand that made it possible, taking a history lesson in cocktail craft, and getting the inside scoop on what to expect from the inaugural Maker’s Mark Old Fashioned Week.

Behind The Brand

The Maker’s Mark family recipe passed through six generations until founder Bill Samuels Sr. ceremoniously burned the only copy of the family’s 170-year-old family whisky formula (lighting the family drapes on fire in the process), wanting a bourbon that was full-flavoured yet easy to drink. After six years of experimentation, that’s exactly what he got.

Bill Sr.’s wife, Margie Samuels, christened the brew with a new name – Maker’s Mark – and its distinctive visual trademarks: red wax, an award-winning font, and the SIV symbol. The first bottle of Maker’s Mark was produced in 1958 and since then Maker’s Mark has earned a permanent place in the bourbon hall of fame and become a good bar’s staple around the world.

A Game-Changer In A Glass

To recount the history of the Old Fashioned is to recount the history of the cocktail itself. As the 1800s wore on, cocktails became increasingly more complex and an evolution appeared that added bitters to “slings” of liquor, water and sugar.

Patrons who wanted a glass of bourbon, water, sugar, and bitters without the fancy additions began asking for an old fashioned whisky cocktail. This was quickly simplified to “Old Fashioned” and the name stuck.

Maker’s Mark Old Fashioned cocktails are even more of a departure, as the spirit replaces the standard rye with red winter wheat as the flavour grain, for a softer, front of tongue finish.

But how do you make this hallowed beverage?

Dissolve or muddle 1 tsp of sugar with 1 tsp of water in an old fashioned glass. Fill ¾ of the glass with ice, then add 60mL of Maker’s Mark bourbon, a dash of bitters and stir. Keep stirring for 20 seconds to cool, dilute, and blend the ingredients together. Top with fresh ice cubes and an orange peel for garnish.

The Maker’s Mark Man

Picture this: an immaculately dressed man and his son prepare for an event.

The son holds his father in high esteem. He welcomes his father’s advice – on style as in all things – and eagerly absorbs his knowledge. The father proudly ensures his son looks equally dapper, with a touch of modernity befitting his younger years.

When the process is complete, the son takes the lead. He shows his father how to create a classic Old Fashioned with Maker’s Mark, and the two share a drink before leaving.

The Maker’s Mark man is accomplished without being pretentious. He is well mannered and comfortable in any situation, embraces honesty and authenticity, staying true to his core values no matter how high he climbs. And he does it all with self-effacing good humour – because although he’s serious about his bourbon, he never takes himself too seriously.

A Maker’s Mark Old Fashioned may be a classic – it is, after all, the world’s first cocktail – but “old fashioned” it’s not. It’s a timeless tipple that pleases young and old, traditionalists and innovators, fathers and sons alike.

Introducing Maker’s Mark Old Fashioned Week

The Old Fashioned is still one of the most called-for cocktails on any good bar’s list and a favoured base for experimentation at Sydney’s top watering holes. In celebration of its ageless appeal, Maker’s Mark Old Fashioned Week will start the party at Earl’s Juke Joint in Newtown on May 11.

The week will also feature an intimate True Maker’s event, with artist Anthony Lister and surfboard shaper Simon Anderson in conversation with Danny Clayton at The Wild Rover in Surry Hills on May 18.  Tickets via The Wild Rover Ticketbooth.

Sydney-siders can sample the best of Old Fashioned cocktails from May 12 – 20 at participating venues; The Commons, Earl’s Juke Joint, Papa Gede’s, Ramblin’ Rascal Tavern, Riley St Garage, The Roosevelt, Shirt Bar, Soda Factory, Stitch Bar, The Village Inn, The Whisky Room at The Clock Hotel and The Wild Rover.

We’ll see you there…

7 Signs You've Got Lame 'Dad' Habits On Social Media
7 Signs You've Got Lame 'Dad' Habits On Social Media

Just when you think you’ve mastered email and text messaging, Facebook, Twitter and Instagram come in and mess up all the time you’ve spent understanding online etiquette and the dangers of sending nude photos.

Maybe you’re on the older end of the spectrum and the likes of Snapchat, Vine and Tinder are for the young and dumb, or maybe you’re a man on the go with little time to swipe and zoom, let alone click attending on a Facebook event, or in an act of defiance you’ve ditched social media altogether with the healthy epiphany that there are far more important things in life.

No matter which category you fall into, or don’t fall into, here are the 7 signs you’ve got lame ‘dad’ habits on social media.

#1 You Don’t Know How To Take Or Post A Selfie

bad-selfie

These days iPhones come with plenty of pitfalls when taking a selfie. Firstly, there’s locating the reverse camera feature, then there’s making sure you’re not actually recording a video, and that’s not even getting to when you have to post it online. Your best bet is to get a mate to just take the photo for you, and when it comes to posting, double check before you blast 100 ‘practice’ shots off into the World Wide Web.

#2 You Often Like Photos From Over A Year Ago

Accidental-Like

You’ve been enjoying a cheeky scroll and stalk of someone’s Instagram profile and BOOM, you’ve tapped the like button. Not only is a notification going to pop up for that person saying you’ve like a picture from 56 weeks ago, you’ve just been caught red handed being a bit of a creep. Give yourself a one week rule.

#3 You Don’t Know How To Use Hashtags

hashtag

Hashtag: a word or phrase preceded by a hash sign (#), used on social media sites such as Twitter to identify messages on a specific topic. It’s a weird concept when you think about it, but putting a the (#) symbol at the end of a word or phrase, hashtagging entire sentences, or using #too #many #hashtags isn’t going to do you any favours on social media.

#4 You Try To Zoom Or Swipe On Instagram

zoom

One day a kind and clever soul out there will integrate all technologies and make it possible to zoom and swipe whatever you want, whenever you want, wherever you want. Up until that happens, however, try to avoid the accidental zoom and swipe on Instagram, as it could lead to accidentally liking a photo (as outlined in point #2) and will grant you lame dad status instantly.

#5 You Post Overly Encouraging Comments

writing-a-comment

No one is knocking your enthusiasm, and good on you for getting involved, but perhaps it’s best to leave the cheese at home and simply click the ‘like’ button instead of a) posting “you go girl!” on a photo of your 2nd cousin twice removed who has just had a baby, or worse, commenting with an entire essay of your thoughts on the meaning of life.

#6 You Have To Put Glasses On Before Looking At Social Media

glasses

Whilst we admit this is a silly point because in all fairness, plenty of people in the world actually need glasses, if you deliberately have to bust out a pair of coke bottle glasses just to glance at a funny Instagram pic, you may appear to have reached the pinnacle of lame dad on social media once again.

#7 You Constantly Share & Tag People In Meaningful Quotes And Memes

over-share

Again, there’s nothing wrong with sharing funny, poignant and thought-provoking posts on Facebook, but if everyday your family and friends are waking up to 20 notifications from you tagging them in their weekly horoscope or a grainy, unfunny meme, maybe it’s time to ease off.

5 Hidden Health Benefits Of Spicy Food
5 Hidden Health Benefits Of Spicy Food

“No pain, no gain” is a mantra frequently heard at the gym, but it may apply in the kitchen too. Although hot sauces come with names like “Satan’s Blood”, “Crazy Jerry’s Brain Damage”, and “Ass Blaster” (all real), they may actually be good for you.

A variety of studies have been conducted on the health benefits of spicy food. Below are five surprising perks of a fiery diet.

#1 Increased Metabolism

It’s no coincidence that you sweat while working out and while eating spicy foods. Multiple studies have linked consumption of capsaicin – the compound that gives hot peppers their kick – with a metabolism boost that can burn extra calories for a short period after you’ve eaten. Researchers at Purdue University also discovered that capsaicin lessened cravings for salty, fatty, and sweet foods, and reduced feelings of hunger overall.

#2 A Stronger Heart

Studies have found that people in countries with spicier diets tend to have fewer heart attacks than those who subsist on milder foods. Hot peppers have been shown to lower heart disease risk by decreasing levels of “bad” LDL cholesterol and increasing its “good” counterpart, HDL. There’s also evidence spicy foods can improve circulation and fight inflammation.

#3 Boosted Mood

Spicy foods may make your eyes water, but they’re not tears of sadness. In fact, hot dishes can trigger the production of “happy” hormones in your brain, like serotonin, which makes you better equipped to deal with depression, anxiety, anger, and stress.

#4 Better Brain Function

A naturally-occurring flavonoid called apigenin, found in red pepper, encourages nerve formation and connections between brain cells. Researchers in Brazil found that apigenin shows potency in treating mental health problems like schizophrenia, depression, Parkinson’s disease, and Alzheimer’s disease. An earlier study found it may also be effective in the prevention of cancer.

#5 Longevity

A mammoth study in China (involving nearly 500,000 people) concluded that eating spicy foods six to seven times a week may lower your likelihood of death by 14%. Braving the heat once or twice a week resulted in a 10% reduced risk of death. Rates of ischemic heart disease, respiratory diseases, and cancers were all lower in hot-food eaters.

This Scientist Built A Hoverbike In His Backyard

Famed Youtube scientist Colin Furze is not wired like others. For starters, he is as insane as he is insanely smart. Adding to his list of crazy inventions such as pneumatically operated Wolverine claws and a thermite canon, Furze has today unveiled every Star Wars fan’s dream – a fully functioning hoverbike.

The twin propellered craft was built in his backyard using motors from compact parasailing fans. It wasn’t all smooth sailing though with Furze having to take multiple attempts to learn how to fly the unstable machine without losing his fingers or head.

It’s dangerous. It’s awesome. And we highly recommend you don’t try this one at home with your Dyson fans.

Surreal "Pop Mashups" Are Food As You've Never Seen It Before

In the world of Paul Fuentes, a lime slice is a spinning record, ‘Pop-Tart’ could be Pantone’s colour of the year, and a banana is a lethal weapon. The Mexican visual artist’s surreal “pop mashups” invite viewers to see their food in a whole new way.

Fuentes says he aims to create “something strange and with some humour” using “common objects, food, paint, water and ink with pastel coloured backgrounds.” His “useless creations” (the artist’s words, not ours) look as absurd as they do delicious, like inventions straight from Willy Wonka’s imagination.

Fortunately, Fuentes’ mashups won’t cause you to be attacked by squirrels or turn into a giant blueberry. Enjoy a selection of his colourful compositions above and follow him on Instagram for more.
