What Australians Can Learn From Greece’s Lazy Attitude To Money
What Australians Can Learn From Greece’s Lazy Attitude To Money

Greece is famous for many things: Hercules, the Acropolis, the Greek Island, founding democracy and of course for being one of the worst economies in the developed world. The crisis – as the Greeks refer to it – began in the aftermath of the 2007-08 financial meltdown. Remember the one that Australia sailed through? The Greeks weren’t so lucky: it resulted in an upending of political systems, impoverishment and a billion euro debt for the government. Australia by comparision has none of those issues but according to the International Monetary Fund, we do not have a stronger growth forecast.Australia has had an amazing growth track record, it is the world record holder for most years of consecutive growth with 28 years. But now the country is slowing down; Australian’s aren’t spending their money and that is bad for growth.Consumers used the recent income tax cuts to get on top of their mortgages and didn’t just spend it as the Government expected. The result of this is a slower economy with the IMF forecasting a growth of just 1.7% while Greece sits at 2%.This figure begins to look worse when you consider that only last year the IMF forecast Australia’s 2019 growth to be 2.8%. Currently, it is predicting a 2.3% growth in 2020 which is half a percentage point lower than its April predictions. That spells bad news for the Morrison Government who had predicted – in their quest to get back to surplus – that Australia’s growth would be 2.75% for 2019/20 and 2020/21.The numbers aren’t great and since economics is a big political football it has already become a talking point. You’ve read the same news article a hundred times, the opposition party blames the Government for the state we are in and the Government says they are doing everything right.Instead of looking at the political football lets instead look at the country who despite all odds is forecast to have stronger growth. How do Greeks, with a debt level of 181.1% of GDP, have a stronger forecast than Australia whose debt level is at roughly 40% of GDP?

1. Drunk Adults on TopDeck Tours

Tourism in Greece is still one of the key elements for economic activity in the country. It’s the most visited tourist destination in Europe attracting upwards of 30 million people per year. Tourism contributes 25% to the nation’s Gross Domestic Product and provides jobs for over 900,000 people. Everyone has that friend who spent a week yachting around the Mediterranean or did non-stop posts by the pool in Santorini. People spending money in this way is what Greece needs to grow and its mostly foreign money, unlike Australia.Australia is in the unfortunate position of having 73% of our total tourism coming from domestic visitors with international visitors barely hitting the 8 million visitor mark. It’s still a profitable sector and is worth $44.6 billion a year and contributes roughly 3% to the nation’s Gross Domestic Product but it’s not from international money. Australians are spending less so that means fewer weekend getaways to wine valley’s and tropical beaches and that brings the total tourism revenue down. Revenue down means fewer jobs available and has all other kinds of flow-on effects that impact the economic growth of Australia.

2. Spending Big On Needs Not Wants

A post shared by Rich Kids of Greece Official®️ (@richkidsofgreece_) on

This is subjective and if we went purely off social media – a great metric for financial reporting – both countries have their own Rich Kids Of Instagram accounts. In fact, Australia beats Greece here with the Australian account having 10,000 followers and the Rich Kids of Greece having only 7,000. Mind you, looking at the uber-rich is probably not the greatest way to compare spending habits but unfortunately there aren’t many metrics that can be used to compare spending habits as even household expenditure is not useful in this scenario.Household expenditure is the amount houses spend to meet their everyday needs such as food, clothing, energy, etc. It does not take into account extra spending on goods and services that we don’t need, like that new Rolex or new Ferrari. The cost of living is rising so the money people need to spend to survive is also rising. In Australia, it rose by 25% from 2009-10 to 2015-16 when the last figures were released. While Greece’s expenditure dropped from 2008-2015 and has only recently begun to rise. So it’s hard to judge really but if expenditure in Greece is only just beginning to rise after almost a decade of falling it could be signs that people in the country are spending again.

3. Some Boring Policy Reason

View this post on Instagram

A post shared by @dhanipapermoney on

Why does the answer to economic problems always have to be so boring? Why can it never be as simple as, go out and spend big on things you want? In this instance, the IMF is super helpful and says not a great deal about why the Greek forecast is higher than Australia’s. It does call on governments across the world to spend more money but does not directly target any policy of either Greece’s or Australia’s governments. If anything the only obvious reason that Greece may be growing ahead of Australia is that it is starting at a much lower position.  Greece is still far below Australia in terms of budget revenues, money made in exports, GDP and a range of far more boring metrics. Remember this forecast is for growth, not overall economic strength. Even if Australia slows the country is still in a strong position, while Greece growing is a big step in the right direction for a country that has far to go.So yes Australia’s growth is slowing, but to say the country is worse than Greece is alarmist. As by all other metrics our economy is in a much stronger position, it’s just on this one area – growth – the Greeks happen to have the upper hand.

Travellers’ Reactions To Barcelona Riots Exposes The Hypocrisy Of Western Tourism
Travellers’ Reactions To Barcelona Riots Exposes The Hypocrisy Of Western Tourism

Tear gas. Fire. Cancelled flights. Police batons. Thousands of people in Catalonia have rallied in support of the region’s independence from Spain for a second-day, with some attempting to storm government offices in Barcelona, and many more clashing with police. This follows the Monday sentencing of nine Catalan separatist leaders with 9-13 year sentences, given for organising an unconstitutional independence referendum in 2017. While only 44% of the Catalan population want to leave, it would appear many more were in favour of the vote.To that end, “A spokesperson for Catalonia’s regional government, Meritxell Budó, said they… understood the anger of the protesters,” (BBC). Spanish authorities, however, are investigating who is co-ordinating the disruption, and are not so empathetic. This sentiment appears to be shared by American and Australian tourists (and expats) who are not too happy to have their flights delayed and their iconic Barcelona experience disrupted.

It’s not just tourists though, with many Barcelona residents also appearing disgruntled…

While we won’t pretend we can answer an issue that frustrates world-class diplomats and the UN, we would be remiss not to rib the tourist trend of celebrating a culture for its differences right up until the point that it means copping a cancelled flight.Though I have written about Australia’s fetishisation of European culture (and slammed our pink flamingo obsession), to be fair: I am guilty of this myself. Which means I see exactly where the following temporary Barcelona resident was coming from in his analysis of yesterday’s riots, whilst acknowledging the unctuous tone.

Other Twitter users, apparently from Barcelona themselves, were quick to pick up on this, encouraging him to get out in the street and join them…

“Police is [sic] attacking protesters, and they are protecting themselves. Get out and have a close look,” one said. “Did you mistake your window for a TV,” commented another.

“We are fighting for democracy. Come down and joing us.”

That said, the other point of view is that whether you believe in the aims of the separatist movement or not, blockading the airport and causing hundreds of people (both locals and tourists) to miss flights for which they will not be reimbursed, is a terrible way to engender sympathy for your cause.People of this school of thought also point out that: while separatists like to paint themselves as an undertrodden, baton-flayed population, they live in one of the most socio-economically privileged cities in the world, and only get their asses handed to them when they demand more. While there’s something to this, these kinds of ‘you’re more privileged than you know’ observations are routinely made to discredit all kinds of social movements (see: Andrew Bolt’s think piece on Greta Thunberg). In light of this, we would argue that – though we all like to consider ourselves open-minded and impartial – when it comes down to it, most people’s perspective on the protests all rests on whether or not they agree with the core movement. In other words: if you are really convinced of a historical injustice (whether that be of climate change or Catalonia royalty choosing the wrong side in a 1714 war), you’ll say a few missed flights (or days off school) are worth it (and if not, you most likely won’t).Or if you don’t know any of the historical background and all you know is your European jaunt just got a few hundred dollars more expensive, you’ll tweet your outrage, before returning to brag about your cultural awakening on Instagram.

Cold Blooded UFC Star Khabib’s New Training Regime Shocks Even His Own Fans
Cold Blooded UFC Star Khabib’s New Training Regime Shocks Even His Own Fans

While the rest of us doddle through the week in a caffeinated fugue state, UFC fighters take each day as an opportunity to take their pain tolerance and bodily endurance to the limit.Case in point: UFC lightweight champ Khabib Nurmagomedov, arguably the best pound-for-pound fighter in the world right now, with the longest active undefeated streak in the MMA (and the scalps of Conor McGregor and Justin Poirier in his ‘win bank’) who recently passed on sparring with humans in preparation for his next fight (which will be in March or April next year), instead electing to battle a freezing cold river. The 28-0 professional fighter has added to his no-nonsense reputation by releasing a video that shows he is willing to do whatever it takes to make him an even tougher fighter than he is right now (which, as McGregor and Poirier can attest), is already pretty bloody tough.

A post shared by House of Highlights (@houseofhighlights) on

This brutal training shocked even Khabib’s own fans, who have seen his cold-blooded antics time after time in the Octagon, with comments like, “Training… dying… same thing,” and, “Tough guy wants pneumonia” and, “The fact the current hasn’t pulled him out of shot in 3 seconds is pretty impressive” rolling in.

“Crazy.”

Others took the chance to chuck in a few UFC references, compliments and puns like, “When Khabib sees McGregor but he’s getting held back,” and, “Dude has probably been doing that before he could walk,” and, “Wow, he’s so cool.”

“Rocky Balboa stuff right here.”

Yet others questioned the relevance of this training to the UFC, asking, “How is this helping,” with even 11-time surfing world champion Kelly Slater weighing in, saying, “He needs some serious swimming form lessons.”All we can say is: watch out Tony Ferguson.

Why Australia’s Harden Up Mentality Is Destroying Men’s Mental Health
Why Australia’s Harden Up Mentality Is Destroying Men’s Mental Health

Every male has heard the phrase ‘drink a cup of concrete and harden up’ at one point in their life. Maybe it was when you were complaining about training for school sport in the rain. Maybe it was when you were in University and discussing the challenges that come with it. Maybe it wasn’t even that phrase, which roughly translates to stop whining and get on with it. Maybe you were just told to harden up and that mentality is harming Australia’s young men.Young Australian men are reluctant to talk about their feelings for fear of being seen as less masculine according to a new survey. A new report by Movember has found that men don’t want to be seen as weak which has caused two in five Aussie men to avoid talking about their problems because they don’t want to be seen as less of a man.It is no secret that Australia has a ‘tough guy’ stereotype. We’re the battlers from the bush, the men who wrestle with crocodiles and even in Hollywood the Aussies we see are the definition of ‘traditional masculinity’. Think Hugh Jackman, Chris Hemsworth, and even Russell Crowe. Society perceives us as tough men and our young Australian males believe there are certain traits they have to uphold to fulfill that. Some of those traits include being the main breadwinner and fighting back when pushed according to a study produced last year. The study found that men believe that society expects certain things from them, despite men for the most part not believing in those traits themselves. This theory was backed up by the latest Movember study that found 59% of Australian men believed that society expected them to be emotionally strong and to show no weakness. It is perhaps not surprising that those societal pressures have manifested themselves in mental health issues. Over a third of men believe they are under pressure to behave in a masculine way and Movember’s global mental health director Brendan Maher said it was an alarming statistic.

“It is worrying that Australia’s young men are still feeling under pressure to conform to age-old, masculine stereotypes that stop them from talking about the things that keep them up at night.”

Bottling up feelings is like shaking a bottle of coke eventually it will open and explode everywhere. We see it in our cities where alcohol-fuelled violence is a big issue among young men and unfortunately, we still see it in our homes where Australian men are three times more likely to commit suicide than females. It’s that last statistic said Brendan that needed to change and part of that was trying to get Aussie men to open up and talk about their mental health.

“If the pressure to uphold this facade means that men can’t talk about their problems, then that can have a really negative impact on their mental wellbeing.”

Men may be starting to open up more thanks to the work by groups like Movember and Headspace. It also helps that male role models are starting to talk about their own challenges. I would like to meet the man that would go up to Dwanye Johnson or Chris Evans and tell them to drink a cup of concrete.

Having high profile figures come out and talk about mental health is hugely important in breaking down the stigma that surrounds mental health. Celebrities have the ability to change the perception of what mental health looks like by sharing their challenges and triumphs according to Director of Health Professional Training at Movember Dr Zac Seidler.

“The fact that half of young Aussie blokes are avoiding talking about their problems because they don’t want to appear less of a man shows that a lot more work needs to be done to destigmatise opening up and showing your emotions.”

As individuals, there is plenty we can do to get our mates to open up and discuss their emotions said Zac. It doesn’t require anyone to be an expert or to have all the answers, mostly it just requires someone to listen and actually ask the deeper questions.

“Asking is the first step in being there for the men in your life. Keep an eye on men who are going through the big life stuff, if you think someone’s not doing too good, reach out to them.”

At the end of the day, it comes down to taking care of your mates. If there is one thing Australians are known for, beyond our tough-guy image, it’s for taking care of our mates.

Luxury Lovers Can Now Fly Flat To This Hidden Malaysian Archipelago
Luxury Lovers Can Now Fly Flat To This Hidden Malaysian Archipelago

Qatar Airways today launched flights to Langkawi, a little known Malaysian archipelago which travellers would typically reach by ferry (or a cheap nearby flight). Now though, sunburnt sojourners can fly direct from Doha to Langkawi with Qatar Airways on a Boeing 787 Dreamliner, a jet which offers a world-class pointy end experience.Flights will begin from the Hamad International Airport in Doha and land at Langkawi International Airport, with the first of the bunch having taken to the skies this morning. As Qatar Airways Malaysia and Brunei Country Manager Datuk Muzammil Mohamad told media, there will be four flights each week on Tuesdays, Thursdays, Saturdays and Sundays, with a Friday flight to be added as of October the 27th, bringing it to five flights a week from Doha to Langkawi.

“Qatar Airways will begin flights from Doha to Langkawi from October using the Boeing 787 Dreamliner airplanes which can carry more than 250 passengers. These will be direct flights from Doha through Penang to Langkawi.”

“Sales began in April, the demand and bookings for flights to Langkawi have been very encouraging. More interestingly, we see demand from countries where the people have most likely never been to this island,” Muzamnil added.

“This flight will make it easier for tourists as they no longer have to go to Kuala Lumpur and change planes, but only board in Doha and fly straight to Langkawi.”

This suggests Langkawi may see a slightly more luxury seeking demographic over the coming years (or so Qatar Airways hope). As AirwaysMag.com reports, “Qatar and Malaysia have around 40 years worth of political relations, valued at an estimated $1.1bn. This new route launch will no doubt increase that number as cargo and passengers are transported through its gateways.”Only time (and business class passengers’ penchant for secluded islands) will tell. As for any Australians thinking of making Langkawi an opulent side note to their annual Qatar Airways operated European escape, here’s what you need to know.

What is it?

Langkawi is an archipelago made up of 99 islands on Malaysia’s west coast. Surrounded by Windows screensaver-esque sea, the interior of the main island is a mix of paddy fields, jungle and hills. It is known as a place to enjoy duty-free alcohol, cigarettes and chocolate as well as for nature lovers. With powder-fine sand and swaying coconut trees Langkawi is also acclaimed for its excellent diving opportunities and many other tantalising holiday opportunities (from Underwater World Langkawi to the majestic Cable Car in Pantai Kok). In other words: the siren call of anyone looking to escape reality.Oh, and dry season is between January and March, though people visit all year round.

Extreme Strongman Reveals Muscle Building Secrets You Need To Know
Extreme Strongman Reveals Muscle Building Secrets You Need To Know

The life of an extreme strongman is as different from the average gym-goer’s as a HIIT class is from yoga. That said, there are still some skills every-day weight lifters can glean from an extreme strongman. And even though they might not immediately help you achieve your hulk-goals, they could help you bust out of a plateau, achieve the muscle definition you crave or quicken your progress.Speaking to the BBC, 35-year-old Mikey Lane who is an ISF Pro Strongman from Nuneaton, England, revealed three crucial pieces of advice that will help anyone – amateur or not – achieve their fitness goals.

Work out exactly how many calories you need to consume, for different workouts

View this post on Instagram

A post shared by Mikey Lane (@mikeythemissinglink) on

You might not need to hit 8,500 calories a day like Mikey, but if you are just looking to be the strongest version of you possible (even if not necessarily the strongest man in the world), it is a good idea to consult a nutritionist or a dietician (preferably one well versed in the fitness space, or who works with other athletes) to get a more exact idea of how much food you should be consuming (and what types of foods you should be consuming) on a daily basis, as well as information on how much this will change depending on your routine.

“Mikey… eats seven chickens a week, along with six pizzas, as part of his training regime,” (BBC).

While you would have to be burning a highly unusual (think: extreme strongman) number of calories to justify headlining calorie-rich foods like pizza, the point remains that dialling in your diet (though it is a pain in the short term) will pay dividends in the long run.As for pizza? Here’s what Mikey has to say: “They aren’t the most ideal form of nutrition, but if by the end of the day the rough calorie intake hasn’t been met, pizzas are an easy and convenient way of hitting that figure.”And – before you get the wrong idea that Mikey’s diet is all junk – the BBC adds that, “To maintain his 8,500 calorie intake and 130kg bodyweight, Mikey also eats steak, bread rolls, German ham, cold roast chicken, slow-cooked beef, vegetables, shakes with blended oats and snacks like crisps, chocolate and biscuits.”

Take your workout space seriously & don’t be afraid to seek advice

View this post on Instagram

A post shared by Mikey Lane (@mikeythemissinglink) on

This may not be possible for all of us, but Mikey values his workout zen to the point where he has built his own personal gym, after outgrowing the equipment and weights of his local.

“Three years ago he decided to take his mission to the next level and create his own gym by renting a farm outbuilding a couple of miles from where he lives in the Midlands,” (BBC).

In his personal gym, Mikey doesn’t need to worry about crushing other gymgoers or loudly dropping weights (his dumbells weigh from 0.5kg to 105kg, and his large spherical ‘Atlas Stones,’ weigh from 60kg to 200kg).Of course, we don’t all have this luxury, but what you can do is stake out a claim in a corner of your gym (just, for the love of God, don’t do bicep curls in the squat rack), waiting until the equipment you want to use is totally free (rather than working in with someone using slightly different weights). This might mean going to the gym outside of peak hours. But hey, that (could be) the price of progress.Or – if you have a spare room at home – your private ‘fitness cave’ awaits. A further tip along these lines, which may not be a ‘secret’ per say, but which is certainly undervalued, is to focus on compound lifts (which work multiple muscle groups at the same time) and add in ‘assistant exercises’ (secondary, more targeted movements) that create stimulus for growth as your fitness goals dictate. The last tip in this category is to seek expert advice: “Find an established gym, or club, with experienced people who really know what they’re doing, ask plenty of questions, start light, and build a foundation,” Mikey told the BBC.

“But mainly have fun. The more fun it is, the more you’ll want to do it, and the quicker you’ll progress!”

Treat recovery as an exercise in and of itself

View this post on Instagram

A post shared by Mikey Lane (@mikeythemissinglink) on

Arguably the one area that should be most similar between an amateur gym-goer trying to keep his dad bod at bay and an extreme strongman is in the emphasis placed on preventing injury and looking after oneself. While you may not use a car polisher to massage your muscles, a la Mikey, his approach to maintaining mobility and flexibility is a great guide to match: “I follow a set plan of muscle release, nerve release and muscle activation before each training session, using foam rollers and passive stretches to release muscle tissues without straining them,” he told the BBC.If you’re still not seeing progress (or even if you are, but are keen for more), try (carefully) increasing your pain tolerance, which done this way can help you get ripped faster, or check out David Goggins’ latest workout, or Lebron James’ Keto Diet.

Ulysse Nardin Collaborate With Devialet To Create The World’s Loudest Minute Repeater
Ulysse Nardin Collaborate With Devialet To Create The World’s Loudest Minute Repeater

In a first for watchmaking, luxury Swiss watch brand Ulysse Nardin has teamed up with deluxe French audio company Devialet to create a limited edition run of striking watches that in their words will create “an enhanced audible experience worn on the wrist”.

The Ulysse Nardin Hourstriker Phantom combines the strength of Ulysse watchmaking abilities with Devialet’s audio abilities to create a watch that will ring on command to not only tell you the time but allow you to hear it. Devialet has been creating some of the most advanced French-made sound systems in the world with their flagship product The Phantom – their deluxe speaker – capable of creating sound up to 108 dB SPL.

What this means in simple terms is The Phantom is capable of generating roughly the same sound level as a jackhammer. The new watch has been built from the ground up with every step on the audio signal chain being redefined by Devialet. The result is the best performance ever recorded on a striking watch. It is fitting that Ulysse Nardin is the one to bring this to market, as it was one of the first watch brands to bring back striking watches that indicate the hour by means of musical sounds.

Ulyssee Nardin has gone one step further than just a typical gong though in order to achieve the record sound. By fixing the heel of the timbre to a system of torsion arms that change the direction of the action forces induced the sound is able to find a way out of the watch. This is achieved through a thin membrane on the bottom of the watch with eight openings that allow the sound to travel and release and amplify the striking noise.

All it means is that rather than the sound being contained in the watch, it is able to escape. This will allow you to hear on the hour and half hour it’s striking notes of up to 85 decibels. For perspective, that’s roughly as loud as an idle bulldozer makes.

To reflect its 85-decibel range, only 85 of the 43 mm titanium US$72,000  Hourstriker Phantom will be made, making this a very limited edition timepiece. Not only does it have impressive audio built-in but the watch itself is also stunning to look at. It is adorned with a satin-brushed anthracite dial inspired by Chladni’s figures, which mimic the complex patterns of vibrations on a rigid surface. There is also a discrete rose gold chip at the three o’clock mark that disappears depending on whether the striking mechanism is activated or not.

Considering all the work that has gone into it we can’t see why you would ever want to deactivate it.

Air Canada Set To Change Their Inflight Announcements & We Have Some Ideas
Air Canada Set To Change Their Inflight Announcements & We Have Some Ideas

A new term is taking to the skies under a proposal by Air Canada to change their greeting. For decades announcements made by Air Canada staff refer to passengers by ‘ladies and gentleman’ but a sweeping change will soon see an end to the expression.

Staff at the airline have been told to replace ‘ladies and gentleman’ with inclusive neutral terms according to an internal statement obtained by the Canadian website La Presse. The change follows new Canadian regulations that allow people to choose gender ‘X’ in identification documents if they do not consider themselves exclusively as a man or woman. Air Canada said they wanted to ensure an inclusive space for everyone, including those who identify with gender X.

The regulation is not yet in place and is broadly supported by employees at Air Canada according to La Presse. Sources told the news site that the change was an easy one to make but may take time for people to adapt to the new announcement. Now at D’Marge we have some ideas about how to change the greeting. Why be boring and use everyone when there is so many words to choose from? It should be even easier for Canada, they do have two official languages after all.

“Hey Y’all”

For flights into or out of America how can you beat this one? Say it like Dolly Parton in her famous southern drawl and we would come back to Air Canada everytime.

“G’Day Mates”

Despite no Australians actually using the term it would be rude not to include this greeting. Mates in Australia refers to absolutely everybody so this inclusive term is good to go.

“Hiya, you alright?”

Ok it may be a stretch to use this one in a group setting but could you get any more British? The only other terribly British greeting is ‘Ello Gov’na but for obvious reasons that wouldn’t work as a gender-neutral term.

“Bonjour-Hi”

Air Canada does already do announcements in French although apparently they are not french enough as a recent court case determined. Most people know enough french to know Bonjour means hello so why not skip doing two greetings and shorten it to just the one? Although make sure you’re not flying through Quebec when you do it.

“Nothing”

Most people have their headphones in during most of the announcements and miss the first part anyway. Just skip the whole greeting thing, it may seem rude but honestly, no one is actively listening.

Over on Twitter people had some ideas about the change as when does the internet ever not have ideas. Many people welcomed the tiny change as a big inclusive step.

But of course other people took it upon themselves to be angered by inclusivity and accused the company of pandering to left-wing politics.

Ladies and Gentleman is actually used a surprising amount in standard in-flight announcements and there is nothing more annoying than being forced to listen to any inflight announcements when you’re watchin a film. So anything that shortens it – even if by just a word – is a win in our minds
