Everything Men Need To Know About Going Grey
Everything Men Need To Know About Going Grey

Gone are the days when greys were something your dad had. The years have churned on and — accompanying those suddenly-appearing expression lines and crows feet at your eyes — you’re slowly, but surely, turning grey. And it’s terrifying.Coining it the ‘silver fox’ does make it sound more becoming, but there’s serious work to do before fuddy-duddy turns foxy. Most everyday greying gents are parading sad, sallow hair that lacks life, instead of something naturally cool like salt and pepper flecked. Case in point, Taylor Kinney.greyOr, perhaps you’re against going grey at all? There’s still something in here for you too. Making grey hair more black and white, here’s a guide for everything men need to know about grey hair. It’s gonna be ok, Mr Clooney and Mr Gere still have it going on. Grey hair, don’t care.RELATED: 50+ Men’s Short Hairstyles & Haircut Ideas

What Causes Grey Hair?

geryAccording to the U.S. National Library of Medicine, hair colour is due to a pigment called melanin, which hair follicles produce. Follicles are structures in the skin that make and grow hair. With ageing, the follicles make less melanin, and this causes grey hair. And it often begins in the 30s. But, each person will go grey at different life stages. Why?Genetics is the main reason you’re going grey. It tends to occur earlier in Caucasians. Then Asians. Then African-Americans, with redheads going grey before any of group. Some scientists believe fifty percent of the population has about 50% grey hair at age 50. But a 2012 worldwide survey found that it’s more likely that only between 6 and 23 percent of the population at 50 can expect to have 50 percent grey hair.Stress won’t cause you to go grey directly, but anxiety does lead to a lot of hair issues. Hair loss due to stress is known as Telogen effluvium, which causes the hair to fall out and when hairs grow back, they’re often less pigmented than the original, and can even turn grey.

Can Grey Hair Be Reversed?

grey2If you’re a young buck (under 35) and experiencing grey hair, get yourself tested at the doctor. According to research, a vitamin B12 deficiency or problems with your pituitary or thyroid land can cause premature greying. And, that’s reversible if the problem is corrected. If it’s genetic, there’s no cure, although rumour has it, scientists are working on a pill. Just like they did with balding.RELATED: What To Do When You’re Handsome But Balding

How To Prevent (Pre-Maturely) Going Grey?

grey3You can’t fight it if it’s in your genetic, but you can offset it. Overall, stay healthy and limit activities that will bring on the signs of ageing. So, quit smoking and improve diet. While there is no research to prove that smoking causes grey hair directly, smoking can contribute to premature ageing. So, if you’re genetically predisposed to develop grey hair, smoking can contribute to that development because it contributes to premature ageing. Capiche?Nutritional supplements, vitamins, and other products will not stop or decrease the rate of greying, but they do promote overall health, which again, is important for anti-ageing. Heart foods like Omega 3’s keep your hair strong so eat fish, seeds, and green leafy veg, and avoid refined sugars (a tad bland, but it works, so do it). To replenish vitamin B12 levels eat poultry, eggs, cheese, milk and seafood. And get some sun. Hair follicles have vitamin D in them, so aim for morning or after sunshine (not a midday bake) on bare skin for 20 mins per day to increase vitamin D.RELATED: Best Silver Fox Hairstyles For Men

Should You Dye Or Not?

grey4“It doesn’t matter if you’re salt and pepper, platinum or a silver fox, the best way to colour and care for your greys is to make them shiny and healthy, rather than drab and dull,” says Ash-Leigh Croker, a hairstylist at Valonz. “Everyone’s colour is going to be different so check with your hairdresser to see how they can help achieve a look that you’re happy with.” Alternatively, DIY products are now available that ensure you can easily achieve salon acquired colour. And it’s completely natural to let it go full grey (a lot of celebs are doing it), and it’s much easier as dyeing requires colour maintenance on a regular basis.“If you don’t want to commit to the upkeep of colouring your hair to hide them, then it’s best to embrace it,” says Croker. “Grey’s have become a trend with the likes of George Clooney and Joe Manganiello showing off their salt and pepper features, and rocking them at the same time.”

The Best Way To Cut Grey Hair

grey5Grey or not, men should pick a hairstyle that reflects their lifestyle (professional and off-duty), personal taste and of course, face structure. According to Aiden Xydis at The Men’s Grooming Room, there are a few key styles that will help show off those greys in the best way:

  • Short on sides/long on top is better for men with thick hair – it displays the different tones of grey in the best way and the style is always on-trend.
  • For curly hair, leave it a little longer (2-3 inches) — it shows the curls off and the different grey tones look great with the shape and movement of the curls.
  • For those with thin hair, short all over it usually best and combed back.

RELATED: How To Pick Your Next Hairstyle

And what about grey beards?

bearBeards are great but you need to be committed to maintain and groom them, warns Xydis. “There are a variety of styles that you can try to compliment your head of hair, from stubble to a neat and tidy trimmed beard,” he adds. “I find that a contoured and structured style works best rather than the previous ‘Ned-Kelly’ style, which has previously proven popular.”

Maintenance Man

featStyling your grey fox locks should be simple too, letting the grey be the feature here. “The hair will need that little bit of help staying in place,” says Xydis. So look to a textured paste for that. Then add a hair powder for texture and volume. “This is perfect for men that are losing a bit of hair as well as going grey.”Finally, if you’ve gone down the dye-your-hair-grey path to enhance your greying locks, a toner and at-home treatment is a must, says Croker.“Make those silver features shine.”

Going Grey FAQ

Does stress cause grey hair?

No. Stress will not cause your hair to turn grey directly, but it does lead to several hair issues. Anxiety may cause hair loss. When hair regrows, they are often less pigmented and more likely to turn grey.

What causes premature greying?

Problems with your pituitary and thyroid glands can cause premature greying. Another reason is vitamin B12 deficiency. Once corrected, they are reversible. There is no cure for premature greying due to genetics.

Can you reverse gray hair naturally?

Yes. Get enough vitamins that keep your hair healthy, like B vitamins, particularly B-12 and biotin, vitamin D & E, as well as minerals like zinc, magnesium and iron.

Forget Los Angeles: Hipsters Are Now Gentrifying The Californian Desert
Forget Los Angeles: Hipsters Are Now Gentrifying The Californian Desert

If Hunter S. Thompson’s ‘red shark’ blasting through Nevada defined the American dream in the 70s, Joshua Tree’s Desert Yacht Club perhaps defines it in 2022.

Joshua Tree, a highland in California’s desert, used to be a refuge for misfits. It’s now gone the way of Australia’s Byron Bay, with some residents complaining that short term rentals and high-end buyers are wiping out affordable housing and killing the community vibes.

Many of these short term rentals are an advertiser’s wet dream. From gorgeous glamping tents to glass domes with expansive views, there is a wide range of accommodation on offer.

There are also flying saucers, pastel buildings, silver bullet airstreams, and yachts. Go figure.

Other residents, like the producer of American Psycho Chris Hanley, don’t mind the change, telling one reporter the new demographic is boosting creativity.

“This is the future look of the American West.”

Chris Hanley

He has a house where you can swim from the kitchen to the bedroom in an indoor pool. Oh, and the entire place is covered in mirrors, giving it its nickname, “the hidden house.”

The Hidden House, which you can book for $4,828.87 AUD per night on Airbnb. Image Credit: Airbnb

There are 1,818 Airbnbs in Joshua Tree, and that’s not to mention all the Vrbo listings and hundreds of private campgrounds.

According to Airdna.co, demand for short-term rentals in Joshua Tree increased 54% between 2019 and 2021. This makes Joshua Tree the second fastest-growing market in California.

According to The New York Times, “As of March, there were 2,043 listings in Joshua Tree and Yucca Valley on Airbnb and Vrbo, more than twice as many as four years ago, according to AirDNA.”

The New York Times also reports: “One Realtor who works in Joshua Tree said that plots are now selling for quadruple 2019 prices.”

Some people fear this is pushing out families and creating a ghost town feel, while others are loving the profits and parties.

Though they are not indicative of how much time residents spend living there (it’s possible some of them are away most of the year while renting their place out), statistics show Joshua Tree’s population has actually increased over the last decade or so.

Joshua Tree’s population was 7,414 at the 2010 census. In 2019, 7,581 people are said to live there.

Left: @isabellekri. Right: adventureaide.com

In response to this en masse, Airbnb ‘light bub moment’, parts of the area have introduced noise monitoring devices and started putting caps on the number of homes that are given short term rental permits.

As The New York Times reports, San Bernardino County’s board of supervisors is expected to announce changes to its policies soon, and “a debate is stirring about what all the construction and rules are doing to the beautifully odd trees and the spirit of the place” (legislation to protect endemic trees when people are building or modifying their properties is also being discussed, as lots of Joshua Trees are on private property).

Humourous Instagram accounts like @fuckyourairbnb have also sprung up, just to keep the new wave of investors and side-hustlers on their toes, mocking the cliche ‘Joshua Tree aesthetic’ of “desert boho” and Etsy decor.

This coming together of interests – of tech savvy creatives, advertisers and postmodern knowledge workers crowding out and gentrifying what used to be affordable spaces for hermits and hippies – has been seen all around the world, from Byron Bay to Barcelona.

As the work from home revolution continues, prompting more rich, entrepreneurial people to start living further away from big cities, expect this story to repeat itself again soon.

All this talk of gentrification aside (there are major, valid concerns around the increased cost of housing, and homelessness crises), it’s also worth pointing out that some of the reaction to this kind of change is often unfairly sweeping.

While some entrepreneurs can be arrogant and disrespectful, others can be deferent, helpful and inspiring.

As we have seen in Australia, there is also often an element of Tall Poppy Syndrome related to (some) people complaining about change. And some of those annoying, ahead-of-the-curve individuals end up putting their money where their mouth is and creating something awesome, which we could all learn and benefit from.

Manscaped Review 2022: Trim Your Nuts Like A Boss
Manscaped Review 2022: Trim Your Nuts Like A Boss

Looking for an in-depth and totally honest review of the Manscaped hair trimmer? You’ve come to the right place. I’ve spent some considerable time with the very latest Manscaped Lawn Mower 4.0 to help decide if it’s a genuinely worthwhile addition to your bathroom and a cut above the rest.

But first, what is manscaping?

What is mascaping?

Manscaping is an official term that refers to the art of pruning and trimming all your body hair. However, it is more generally applied to the act of trimming the hair below your waist. We’d say it’s a pretty essential task. Not only does a full, untamed bush look unsightly, but it could also be a potential turn off for anyone lucky enough to see you in your full birthday suit.

So, keeping your body hair (and pubic hair especially) under control is something all men should take an active approach to. Naturally, however, taking sharp blades to such intimate areas is a nerve-wracking experience for some men, especially if they’ve never properly dabbled in body hair removal.

If this sounds like you, then be sure to check out our full guide to manscaping.

What is Manscaped?

This brings us on nicely to the Manscaped body hair trimmer. Taking the very definition of cutting body hair and using it as the brand name is a stroke of genius in my opinion. It clearly defines what the product has been made for and, in theory, should live up to that name by offering one of the best, most hassle-free experiences.

Manscaped is a men’s brand of various grooming products. Most notably, the company has a body hair trimmer called The Lawn Mower, alongside others such as The Weed Whacker nose and ear hair trimmer, The Plow face razor and The Crop Shaver groin razor.

The Lawn Mower is now in its fourth generation and is marketed as not only the best attack against groin hair but as a tool to use for all your body hair removal needs. It’s available to buy on its own or as part of various bundle sets, which can include other grooming products such as the Crop Reviver ball toner and Crop Preserver ball deodorant. I do like the use of humour in Manscaped’s marketing, but even I’ll admit a toner specifically developed for your balls sounds a little farfetched.

Is Manscaped good?

The Manscaped Lawn Mower 4.0 is a relatively small hair trimmer, finished in a smart-looking matte black colour and one that can be used wirelessly. Some body hair groomers may only work when plugged into the mains, but the wireless functionality of the Manscaped Lawn Mower 4.0, coupled with its small size, makes it easy to manoeuvre around those hard to reach, and delicate, places.

I’m someone who does like to regularly maintain hair length, and would most commonly use a safety razor in the shower. I’ve come away unscathed 99 percent of the time, and have always had reservations about taking an electric trimmer to my nether regions. Fast-moving teeth and delicate areas don’t mix, in my opinion.

I was also aware of some pretty negative reviews of the Manscaped trimmers, with many claiming they had cut themselves when attempting to manscape. Safe to say, I went in with some caution. Manscaped claims the Lawn Mower 4.0 is outfitted with SkinSafe technology on the ceramic blades, which provides “precision-engineered for maximum confidence while trimming below-the-waist.”

Does Manscaped work?

After charging the trimmer using the supplied charging base (you do need to have your own USB-A plug) which lets you know by way of three lights how charged your trimmer is, I set it to work. I decided against using the Lawn Mower 4.0 on my balls but felt confident using it everywhere else. Manscaped says you can use the trimmer on the boys if you want, but just make sure you keep the skin taut during the process.

The Lawn Mower 4.0 is waterproof, so you can use it in the shower if you wish. Adding water into the mix can help to keep the skin taut.

I immediately noticed just how quiet it is in use. This may not be an important factor for everyone, but being able to trim away without the potential of my housemates hearing loud buzzing coming from my bathroom, did put my mind at ease.

The Manscaped trimmer is also incredibly lightweight, so holding it for extended periods of time is no issue at all. I used it without any guard on at all (go hard or go home, right?) and found the blades sliced through the hair like a knife through butter. It was effortless and effective.

My only niggle is that it does, as should be expected, cut the hair incredibly short. At least, shorter than I would have normally liked. I’m not exactly a professional swimmer who needs to rid their body of all hair. I found, for my hair length at least, using the smaller of the two supplied plastic guards to not be effective; my hair was already too short for the guard to pick up.

A quick note on those plastic guards. Each can actually be set to two different lengths, depending on how you set them over the main ceramic blade.

However, when I’ve previously used the body groomer I already own, I’m able to cut to a short length using a guard and be happy with the results. That’s not to say I wasn’t happy with the result of using the Manscaped without a guard, it just resulted in incredibly short hair that I wasn’t used to. I was seriously impressed with how easy the experience was, though.

For the sake of public decency, I’m not going to be posting before and after pictures. You’ll just have to trust what I’m saying.

Can I use Manscaped on all body hair?

Yes, absolutely you can. While I’m not super hairy, I do possess a rather generous amount of body hair, which I like to maintain on a regular basis using a body groomer. Figuring this was a perfect opportunity to really put the Manscaped to the test, I attached one of the guards (the smaller one) and began to move the trimmer up and down my body.

Again, the cutting experience was smooth, easy, quick and effective. Any hair that was cut fell to the floor, which I was impressed with since my current body groomer would get hair caught up in the guard, requiring me to empty it on a regular basis. Manscaped has also fitted a small LED light near the blade to help with visibility. This LED light automatically comes on when you turn the unit on, but can be turned off by pressing and holding down on the power button for a few seconds.

Is Manscaped expensive?

Manscaped offers various bundles on top of being able to buy the Manscaped Lawn Mower 4.0 as a standalone unit. The company also offers a Peak Hygiene Plan, which is a subscription-based plan that sees you being sent a fresh blade to replace the one on your trimmer every 3 months, alongside a refill of one of the formulations, such as the Crop Reviver ball toner. This is charged at $24.99 every 3 months.

The pricing is as follows:

Lawn Mower 4.0 standalone unit: $149.99 or $139.99 with the Peak Hygiene Plan
Perfect Package 4.0: Lawn Mower 4.0; Crop Preserver ball deodorant; Crop Reviver ball toner; Magic Mat shaving mats (to collect hair); The Shed travel bag and a pair of Manscaped boxer briefs – $169.99 or $159.99 with Peak Hygiene Plan.
Performance Package 4.0: Lawn Mower 4.0; Weed Whacker ear & nose hair trimmer; Crop Preserver ball deodorant; Crop Reviver ball toner; Magic Mat shaving mats (to collect hair); The Shed travel bag and a pair of Manscaped boxer briefs – $169.99 or $159.99 with Peak Hygiene Plan – $189.99 or $179.99 with Peak Hygiene Plan.

Can you use Manscaped on your face?

Yes, you can. It’s only really worthwhile using Manscaped on your face if you have a long beard, as the guards can be used to cut through the excess hair. I didn’t use it on my face personally, as I only rock a little bit of stubble and have a dedicated beard trimmer to take care of it.

Is Manscaped worth it?

Ultimately, yes I do think Manscaped is worth it if you take your manscaping habits seriously. The Lawn Mower 4.0 trimmer is a lightweight, premium looking device and does an excellent job at cutting through hair. As I mentioned earlier, I was a little apprehensive about using Manscaped for the first time, based purely on some negative reviews I’d seen.

However, after using it several times not just for hair ‘down there’ but for other body hair grooming too, I’m happy for it to replace my previous body groomer.

German Police Seize World’s Biggest Superyacht
German Police Seize World’s Biggest Superyacht

The mighty Dilbar – the world’s biggest superyacht – has been seized by German officials. Germany’s federal criminal police office (the BKA) took to Twitter on Wednesday to share the news.

“The #BKA has determined the owner of the M/S #Dilbar through extensive investigations despite offshore concealment,” the BKA wrote. “This is Gulbakhor Ismailova, Alisher Usmanov’s sister.”

In a follow up tweet the BKA added: “@Ministry of Foreign Affair, @BMWK and @BMF_Bund made sure in Brussels that the Russian owner was sanctioned.”

“The luxury yacht M/S #Dilbar is therefore subject to the sanction law and could be legally fixed in Hamburg.”

BKA

The Dilbar is 156-metres long, and the world’s biggest superyacht by volume. It was being refitted in Hamburg when it was seized. Apparently, it was named after its owner, Alisher Usmanov’s mother. Alisher Usmanov is one of the world’s richest men – a Russian oligarch with ties to Putin.

RELATED: Which Superyachts Belong To Which Russian Oligarchs? An Investigation

The Dilbar has a 25-metre swimming pool and two helipads. It houses 36 guests in 18 cabins (and 84 crew in 40 cabins), and was built by Lurssen. The Dilbar has a top speed of 22.5 knots and an annual running cost of $50-80 million USD. The US treasury values The Dilbar at up to $US750 million (AU $1.006 billion).

Just to fuel The Dilbar allegedly costs up to $1.5 million

The Dilbar was launched in 2016 at an estimated US $648 million ($882,922,680 AUD). Five years later, however, it got a pricey retrofit reportedly costing another couple of hundred million dollars (bringing it to the US treasury’s remarkable AU $1.006 billion valuation).

The news that The Dilbar has been seized is not a huge surprise. Forbes reported earlier this year that authorities had halted work on the ship (though they didn’t have enough evidence at that point to actually seize the vessel).

According to the AFR, “Germany’s federal crime office said Wednesday that despite efforts at what it called ‘offshore concealment,’ it had determined the yacht’s owner was Usmanov’s sister, Gulbakhor Ismailova.”

This enabled it to be subject to sanctions law, and impounded.

A BKA spokesman has reportedly said The Dilbar could not be “sold, rented or pledged as collateral.”

Elsewhere around the world, other superyachts under threat of sanction have appeared to be making their way to one mysterious location called Vladivostok…

Pierre Gasly Shows Off Underrated Core Exercise You’re Not Doing
Pierre Gasly Shows Off Underrated Core Exercise You’re Not Doing

When you step into the gym, your goal will likely be to lift as much weight as possible. Or, at the very least, improve upon your personal bests. We get it, lifting big looks good, although only if you perform those lifts with the correct technique. Nobody looks good with an injury sustained from ego lifting.

But, while there are numerous exercises you can perform for your chest, back and shoulders, there are some exercises that often go overlooked, but they are ones that stand to offer huge rewards for both your strength and stability.

One such exercise is known as the banded rotation and Pierre Gasly, the French Formula 1 driver currently signed to the Scuderia AlphaTauri team has recently taken to Instagram to demonstrate how to perform this underrated, and one you should definitely be adding to your routine.

What is a banded rotation?

Banded rotation exercises can be performed to target various areas of the body, depending on where you hold a resistance band or cable, and how you move your body. As Setforset says, “Rotational exercises require you to twist through a rotational pattern, typically with resistance bands and cables, or weights like a medicine ball, plate, kettlebell or steel mace, as the resistance creates power.”

“Rotational core exercises are the best for developing power in your core and hips. Understand that the goal is not torso rotation but rather a powerful hip rotation. The goal is to learn to better utilize hip internal and external rotation to transfer power from the ground.”

Pierre’s banded rotation may look simple, and it may even look like it won’t provide much in the way of strength benefit at all, but in reality, it’s a serious core burner. Your core is a complete area of muscle that covers pretty much everything apart from your arms and legs. Its job is to stabilise the body and allow you to make all manner of movements without issue.

Many might assume a strong core is defined as having visible six-pack abs and will only perform exercises such as leg raises and crunches to target the upper and lower portion of the abdominal region. However, your core comprises other muscles, such as the obliques on the sides, which can be strengthened by performing side planks and rotation movements, such as a banded rotation.

As we’ve discussed before when talking through this kettlebell circuit workout, your core is a group of more than 20 muscles in the lower back, stomach and hips. The abs are a small fraction of this large and dynamic muscle group.

And, as Fitlab states, it’s important you keep your core as strong as possible because it’s responsible for “keeping the spine stabilised, [helps you] maintain an upright body position and is critical for bending forward, backwards and twisting from side to side.”

Pierre’s example of a banded rotation is a little different to a traditional one. With the latter, you would start with your body and arms held out at 90-degrees to the wall or bar you have your resistance band attached (see here). You would then twist your upper body in the opposite direction to wherever the band is secured and return to a 90-degree angle.

In Pierre’s version, he starts with his arms facing the point of attachment and rotates so that he finishes at a 90-degree angle.

DMARGE reached out to Dean Jamieson, owner of Lean Performance gym in Taren Point, Sydney, to learn what benefits Pierre’s banded rotation will bring to him in the context of racing in Formula 1.

“Rotational band word is a great way to recruit core muscles and stabilise the spine,” says Dean.

“Pierre is about to participate in a 300km intense race at super-high speeds, so it makes sense to warm up to support your performance. By performing a band rotation, Pierre is able to have his core switched on, properly warm up his arms and shoulders and they can help support the spine whilst sitting for long periods.”

So, if a simple resistance band workout is good enough for a Formula 1 driver, it’s certainly one that is going to be good enough for you. Try it next time you’re in the gym and feel your core burn.

Roger Federer Isn’t Done With Tennis Just Yet
Roger Federer Isn’t Done With Tennis Just Yet

Roger Federer isn’t done yet. The stylish GOAT, who was recently surpassed in singles titles by Rafael Nadal (Nadal now has 21, while Federer and Djokovic have 20 each), has been beleaguered with injuries over the last few years, hampering him from going for a 21st Major himself.

The last Grand Slam Federer competed in was Wimbledon last year, where he made the quarter-finals. Afterwards, he got surgery on his right knee. He had already had arthroscopic right knee surgeries in February 2020 and May 2020.

Many have speculated that the 40-year old’s career could now be over, thanks to this slew of setbacks.

However, the 103 ATP singles titles winner today gave fans hope, taking to Instagram with a training video. In the video, Federer can be seen doing ladder work, as well as drills with cones, and swinging around a sign.

The video prompted an outpouring of support and speculation from fans, with one writing: “Nothing would make me happier than Federer winning another Wimbledon title.” Another remarked: “#21 and #22, let’s go.”

“The comeback is on,” yet another Instagram user wrote.

A further comment read: “Never retire ever, please.”

This comes after Federer posted a workout video on Tuesday, which was captioned: “rehab is rocking.”

So: can Federer really win another Major? Christopher Clarey, the top tennis writer of today (and the author of The Master: The Long Run and Beautiful Game of Roger Federer) says Federer has faith in himself to win another Major, after coming one point away from doing so at Wimbledon in 2019.

According to Tennis World USA, Clarey said: “When Roger was last healthy, he was only one point away from winning Wimbledon – one point! I think he expects to have another good chance. Sure, on paper it didn’t look bad in 2021, he was in the quarterfinals at the age of 39.”

Also according to Tennis World USA, Federer told media at the start of March: “I walked on crutches for two months and had to start all over again. It was still the right thing to do. The knee no longer went as it should after the Wimbledon tournament.”

“I am rebuilding everything, I can now slowly think about my return.”

“A few weeks ago I had an MRI, the outcome of which was very positive, gives me hope and makes me feel safe. It will definitely take a while. I could be back in late summer or early autumn.”

Federer also hasn’t skied, apparently, since 2008, because he liked going fast and jumping, and so “had to stop to avoid taking risks.”

Let’s just hope he’s back to gliding across the court soon enough.

China Is Living In 2050 With Genius ‘Husband Storage Cage’ Mall Feature
China Is Living In 2050 With Genius ‘Husband Storage Cage’ Mall Feature

While Australian men are dragging their feet and napping in shopping centres, Chinese men are living in 2050 and having an absolute blast.

That’s right: a recent Instagram post has highlighted China’s genius solution for men who are absolutely bored out of their minds while their partner’s shop.

By looking at the image, it’s clear that men can seek refuge in little glass rooms that are decked out with a comfortable reclining chair, large TV and video games.

These rooms are commonly known in China as ‘husband pods’ or ‘video game pods’ and are located in Shanghai’s Global Harbour shopping mall. According to BBC, the pods were first installed back in 2017.

Most who stumbled upon the Instagram post agreed the pods were a brilliant idea with one user commenting, “This is smart” and another writing, “I’ve been waiting for this for decades.”

These ‘husband pods’ are located in a shopping mall in China. Image Credit: @blokespsychology

However, not everyone agreed that these gaming pods are a good addition to shopping malls. One user challenged the stereotype that men hate accompanying their partners on shopping trips and wrote,

“I actually enjoy shopping with my wife. Especially if it’s clothes shopping. I really enjoy complimenting her and picking out clothes I think would look great on her.”

Another thought the idea of putting men in these glass pods (that kind of look like cages) was “dehumanizing” and “gross.”

One Instagram user was on the fence and commented that she’d be on board if the video game pods were “gender inclusive” and allowed women to use them as well as men.

I’m personally in agreeance; if anyone – regardless of their gender – can use the gaming pods, I’m all for them and can’t wait for the pods to be rolled out in Western countries so I can play some video games in a comfy chair on my next shopping trip…

American Man’s Incredible Holiday Transformation Provides Hope For All Of Us

Holidays are funny. You want to enjoy them, but the pressure to enjoy them can ruin them. In fact, 63% of people report feeling too much pressure during silly season, according to one survey by The National Alliance of Mental Illness (NAMI).

This often leads to strange behaviour. Rather than looking forward to your holiday, for instance, some of us stress out in the lead-up, trying to get shredded in a matter of weeks (when to get true results, you need at least three months).

One man, however, has taken to Instagram with an inspiring story – and a lesson – we can all learn from. That man?Eric Champ. Champ is a coach who posts on Instagram under the username @champcityatx. Champ last month shared how he switched up his holiday mindset in a sustainable way, and now has a healthier relationship with his down time.

“For me, vacation used to mean back-to-back days of consuming what I craved, many trips to the bar, and working out while on vacation just to try and not feel guilty about the extra ‘cheat meals,'” Champ shared.

“Now, vacation is precious time spent with the people I love and allowing myself to truly detach from my normal day-to-day. When I come home, I feel fully refreshed and recharged!”

Champ didn’t make the transformation from the first photo to the second in one holiday. But the images represent how he looked when he had an unhealthy relationship with food (and tried to make up for it with fitness) vs. how he looks now that he takes the time to eat right.

Champ sums this up by saying: “Then: always worried about every meal. Worked out on vacation so I could have a cheat meal.” This is compared to “now” where Champ says he takes “time to find delicious food that is locally available.”

Further benefits of this, Champ says, are that, while he used to be drifting and never fully present with his family while on holiday, he is now able to “capture as many smiles and giggles as possible,” tune in to every moment and come home refreshed.

Speaking of which: Judy Ho, Ph.D., a licensed clinical and forensic neuropsychologist, tenured associate professor at Pepperdine University, published author and 2021 Forbes Health Advisory Board member, last year shared some smart advice with Forbes Health which are also worth bearing in mind for the holiday season.

Her top tips? Eat slowly and mindfully, use smaller plates, wait 20 minutes before going back for a second serving (it takes this long before your brain recognises you’re full) and have a healthy snack before going to a party so you’re not tempted to eat everything you see.

Food for thought.
