Camogli is better known for pastel buildings than controversy. However, judging by a recent argument between a boutique hotel owner and one of his guests, the Italian Riviera’s electric blue water is not the only thing that can make your heart jump like a faulty pacemaker.
The source of the conflict? Although the hotel I Tre Merli Locanda advertises itself as “a night that dreams are made of in Camogli’s harbour,” treating guests to “view[s] over the fishermen marina and the open sea,” one French tourist has taken issue with her particular vista.
“At first you see the pictures, and it looks amazing” the woman wrote on Tripadvisor. “We thought the room was very expensive but thought ok the view is worth it! Well NOT AT ALL! This is what we got!”
“I sent an email to the hotel asking them to do a commercial gesture and never heard back from them” she continues. “They just don’t care! We payed 210 euros with breakfast for one night hoping to get the view on the website in the morning, romantic view and it was catastrophic! And the rooms are not even worth it.”
“I didn’t want to post that because the owners are nice but this is just unbelievable!!”
Then:
“I put pictures of what they are advertising and what we got! I know most of the comments are good but just because they had what they actually saw on the website. If you are like us nothing will be done for you they just don’t answer back !!!!!!!!!!!”
Reading this, it’s easy to take her side. That is: until you see the response from the hotel owner, entitled “Bad Reviews & Discounts,” which appears to expose a growing trend of tourists trying to bully hotels into giving them discounts and accommodating their booking mistakes.
“Our inn has only 5 rooms on the second floor of a building in Camogli’s harbor,” the owner begins. “Two rooms have a view on the harbor. Two rooms on the harbour’s inlet with the pier and the ancient beacon. It is difficult to determine which view is better. The rooms overlooking the inlet have also a view of the open Tirrenian Sea, Portofino’s promontory and the Riviera seacoast all the way to Genova [and] the last room… on the corner of the building… has both views.”
“Recently we had an influx of clients who try to obtain a bargain with the threat of bad reviews. This seems to be the case here. Below is a transcript of the email exchange with this client.”
Yeah, he goes there, explaining how, “on June 3, 2019,” the French tourist “made a reservation for June 4 through our internet server at the rate of € 210,00,” only to send a follow up email at 9:30am the next day (the day of the booking) which reads as follows.
“Hello, Yesterday afternoon I booked a room for two for today just one night, we were on the road on the way to your hotel but unfortunately we need to fly back to Bordeaux, my grandmother is at the hospital .. I know about the cancellation policy but you can check we just booked it yesterday… could we have a refund… it is a lot of money we wanted to have a romantic weekend and will definitely do it when we come back but unfortunately know [sic] we have to go back to France very urgently.”
The hotel owner rejected this request on June the 4th at 11.40am with the following email: “Dear [name removed for privacy], I’m very sorry for the problem you have home. But I had to make you pay the full penalty because it’s very late to cancel your reservation. Indeed, this email is a bonus of € 150,00. You can spend it in the future whenever you want before December 31st 2019 (making a new reservation, of course).”
Fifteen minutes later (at 11.55am, to be precise) the French tourist told the owner that she had changed her mind, and intended to maintain the reservation, as the owner puts it, “due to a sudden reversal of her grandmother’s health status.”
“Sorry to bother you again, my we tried to find a flight but in the meantime my mother told me not to come back that she was fine so we decided to stay. If the room is still available we still want to come tonight or end of afternoon. Sorry again, is it still possible?”
As the room was still available, the owner said yes, and the French couple arrived later in the afternoon and — appeared — “during and after” their stay to be “satisfied with the room and service.” According to the owner, “she did not complain with us at all. Her bill was Euro 251,50 including Euro 41,50 of extra consumption. We gave her a courtesy discount of Euro 21,50 and she paid Euro 230.”

So far so finished, you might think. However, two days later, on June the 6th, the tourist sent the hotel owner the following email: “Hello [name removed for privacy], I was trying to reach booking concerning the room we booked on Tuesday but realized we booked it on your website.”
“I don’t want to put a bad comment on TripAdvisor about your hotel because you are very nice people but I would like for us to find an arrangement because we were not satisfied at all.”
“I would like a refund,” her email continued, “not of the whole amount but a part of it. We booked only ONE night, the room was EXTREMELY expensive for what it was but we booked it because of the view! Once we get to your hotel, it is a tiny room and the view is horrible! I took pictures! So 210 euros for a room that is not what you offer on your website. It is not right!”
“I attach the pictures of the view. [Name removed] and I are both in the restauration we worked in Palaces in France and booked room for 200 euros that were worth it. Here it is not. So I am waiting for an offer on your side. I am very sorry but it is a lot of money and it’s not [sic] faire to us or any of your clients.”
The hotel owner ignored this message, explaining why on Tripadvisor: “We consider the content of this email an attempt to blackmail us and we did not respond. After a few days, we punctually received her bad review [here] on Tripadvisor.”
While the tourist didn’t get what she was after in this particular instance, given how important Tripadvisor and Booking.com reviews are becoming to hotels, this incident feeds into a broader discussion around the power dynamic between customers and service providers in a digitally disrupted world.
It also is suggestive of what is to come in the future, as nearby hotspots like Portofino become oversaturated, sending more tourists Camogli’s way — which will no doubt prove a challenge for the Italians who, as The New York Times reported on Tuesday, have been overheard making statements like: “Portofino is for the Americans. Camogli is for us Italians.”

How local residents (and Italian holiday goers) will take this change remains to be seen. But either way: hotel owners should take note that customers will no longer be oversold in silence, and tourists should realise that if they use these forums to unfairly pressure an establishment, the other side of the story will likely come out.
Or, you know, we could all just laze around in those electric blue waters, drink up the colourful, “improbably stacked” buildings, turn off our phones, and enjoy Italy’s Golfo Paradiso.

Terry Crews will forever be adored as that creepy lovestruck guy from ‘White Chicks’ but more than a decade on it seems his luck may be about run out. And it’s all because of this horrendous kermit green suit.
Spotted in Hollywood last night at the live performance of ‘America’s Got Talent’, Crews opted for one of the most blinding suits we’ve ever set our eyes on and we don’t mean this in a good way. Sure, we get that this is ‘AGT’, a platform where outlandish looks reign supreme, but it wouldn’t hurt to dial down the lime a few notches.
Instead what we have here is a fluorescent linen suit with matching green pocket square, a green choker tie, lapel badge, emerald green loafers and a watch that’s almost as loud as the suit — the Richard Mille RM011 Pelipe Massa edition which retails for approximately AU$228,000 on today’s resale market.
Below is a closer look at the suit’s texture and the watch itself which is finished in striking rose gold and paired to a black rubber strap. Not the most subtle of combinations.
As you can see the suit’s green is rather intense and it easily makes the watch look out of place. A more muted pastel coloured suit would have worked wonders here. Think washed out blue, peach or light red.
You’ve been warned. Do not try this one at home unless you want to be haunted by it in the decades to come.

Fancy a ride in James Bond’s latest Aston Martin before its debut on the big screen in ‘Bond 25’? Here’s your chance. The red Aston Martin you see before you is an extremely rare 1972 Aston Martin V8 — number 47 of 288 Series 2 AMV8s ever built, to be exact.
That build statistic puts it ahead of the number of DB4s, DB5s and DB6s individually produced. The car that will feature in ‘Bond 25’ is the Series 1 variant (below) whilst this one being sold on Carsales is the Series 2, the latter of which sees minor cosmetic adjustments like the omission of the four headlamps for dual 7-inch headlamps and a black mesh grill. The price for a slice of vintage 007 glory? AU$295,000. Slightly negotiable.
Number 47 of 288 features a power output of 310—320bhp from the 5.4-litre V8 engine mated to an automatic gearbox, a rare luxury of that era. Performance of this well-looked after Aston Martin V8 is pegged at a top speed of 280km/h whilst its 0—100km/h time is a bit over 5 seconds.
The seller from Newcastle also has the original build sheet from the Heritage Trust in Britain which will be included in the sale alongside the original handbook/parts catalogue, and a suitcase full of spare parts. Special non-standard issue accessories the factory includes a Vantage style front spoiler and centre console armrest.
Beyond that the car is in its original state as much as it can be. The only upgrades include electronic fuel injection replacing the troublesome mechanical variant. This means the car is more reliable to drive and cold starts are seamless.
Exterior-wise the whole body has been carefully attended to and is rust-free. The inner wheel arches have been rebuilt by Concours on the Central Coast whilst the bumpers have been re-chromed. The front seats have also been re-upholstered in Connolly hide.
The mileage on the car has been listed at 98,674 miles. You can see it in action below in 1987’s ‘The Living Daylights’ starring Timothy Dalton as Bond.

You’ve been counting calories forever and that’s totally understandable. But also — you’re probably doing it wrong, and one of the world’s most prolific nutrition coaches wants you to know it.Max Lugavere is one of New York’s most level-headed exports, posting sensible information in a world of misinformation and detox tea.Posting to his 327,000 Instagram followers, Lugavere recently weighed into the calorie counting debate, asking the same question The Economist recently posed: “given that the great majority of diets fail, could the calorie be one of the biggest delusions in dietary history?”Taking the time to expose the problem with self-styled influencers’ rigid monitoring of kilojoules along the way, this is Max’s answer.
View this post on Instagram
While he admitted calorie counting “can be useful for some [people]… to assess the energy content of calorie dense modern processed foods and to see how they fit within [their] energy balance,” and guide you “past a weight gain or loss plateau,” Max then emphasised his initial premise — if you’ve been counting calories with the goal of keeping healthy, you’re barking up the wrong tree.“In general I think (and the research supports)… [calorie counting is] less necessary when sticking to minimally processed foods that fill you up without providing excessive energy from combined sugar and fat.”“Calorie counting,” he then added, “is a new phenomena enabled by technology. But the calorie counts for foods are subject to a wide margin of error. Not to mention the ‘calories out’ side of the energy balance equation is hard to measure and subject to flux based on hormones, musculature, activity levels, and more.”The takeaway?“If calorie counting works for you [then] by all means continue to do it! There’s no doubt that it can work. Just note that many of us get by (and achieve healthy bodies and the weight we desire) without it.”Piqued? Here are some of Max’s top tips to make achieving an energy balance (or deficit) more effortless.
- Get more and better sleep
- Lift weights
- Stick to unprocessed veggies, whole fruits, and meat/fish/eggs
- Use nuts and seeds as toppings as opposed to snacks
- Avoid ADDED sugar and fats
- Avoid packaged, processed foods
- Avoid drinks with calories

Some years ago it was almost an offensive breach of contract to admit weakness to a date. Thankfully, this attitude is finally shifting, with movements like R U OK? and brave individuals like Oliver Thorn leading the way.But as everyone jumps on the mental health bandwagon, many have complained about the removal of nuance. After all: even though masculine ideals can exacerbate depression and anxiety in those of us who don’t have it in us (or who don’t want to) live like James Bond 24/7, they also have positive features that are often forgotten. The ideal of strength doesn’t need questioning — it is a useful tool for anyone seeking to climb a mountain or grease a corporate ladder. What needs questioning is the assumption that it is exclusively masculine (or that it’s the only tool you need in your belt). Why is this? Because we need to be able to draw from the ideal of vulnerability too if we want to be true to ourselves —and by extension others — and build strong relationships throughout our lives.Case in point: we recently published an article on developing your emotional intuition, in which high-class escort Samantha X told us opening up to your partner could be the secret to having the best sex of your life. In response we were inundated with comments from guys complaining that, in their experience, women didn’t find “being vulnerable” a turn on, instead preferring, in one commenter’s words, a “confident enterprising man.”“I’ve gone on multiple dates with women,” another wrote, “where even a hint of revealing my feelings towards something I’m unhappy about has been a turnoff. [However] every date, and every interaction with women where I have just cracked jokes, flirted, and been all around positive has been a success—even when internally, I’ve felt the opposite.”“I’ve had times when I’ve struggled to find work — tell that to a woman, and her first instinct is to go out with the other guy that was flirting with her — who does have a job,” he continued.
“Tell a girl you’ve been having problems with your family. Though luck, she’d rather date someone who doesn’t have these issues.”
There are two issues here, the first of which is timing: in the initial stages of dating it’s natural not to want to jump in the deep end with someone, instead gradually getting to know each other (and your respective insecurities). The second issue, however, is more critical: as emotional vulnerability is finally, on a widespread scale, valued as a human trait, not just a feminine one, there are a lot of men who are now confused about the difference between whinging and opening up (and who assume confidence and vulnerability are mutually exclusive). To clear this up, we got back in touch with Samantha — one of the most well-versed individuals in the realms of sex and male vulnerability. Here’s what she had to say.
On the difference between whinging and opening-up
There is a huge difference between opening up and whinging. The fact that men think these two are the same purely highlights just how emotionally NOT in tune they are. “My life sucks, everything is going badly, I hate the world,” is NOT the same as “I’ve had a bad day, I had a run in with my boss, his attitude towards me rubs me up the wrong way and I don’t think I can work with him.” These are two very different ways of communicating. One is whinging, and one is opening up, being specific about an incident and being emotionally vulnerable.
On applying this to your personal life
Let’s look at an example of how whinging and opening up when it comes to your partner. “You never want sex, you’re always tired and moody and, I’m sick of it.” And you slam the door. Opening up is “Hey, I get you’re tired, I’m tired too, but I love you and love being close to you. I know you have your needs but I have mine too,” which is a much better way to tackle the issue without it causing an ice storm or WW3.Like I’ve said before, if you can’t have those kinds of conversations with your partner, what the hell DO you talk about? I know men are perfectly able to communicate and open up because let me assure you, you do behind closed doors with me.
A bad example from Samantha’s escorting experience
An example of a whinger was when a client sat on my sofa and whinged about how fat and ugly his wife was, and what a turn off he found her. I was speechless; he was hardly an oil painting, obese and didn’t have one nice thing to say about her. I never saw him again.
A good example from Samantha’s escorting experience
On the other hand, I have had clients who confide in me the issues they are having in their personal lives and do so with empathy, kindness, respect and integrity. For instance, a young handsome 27-year-old booked me recently. “I’ve had a terrible week,” he said as soon as I opened the door. “My fiancé has been having an affair and she’s left. I’m struggling to know what to do; I love her but I’m not sure I can trust her again.”This is a classic example of a man opening up. One question I often ask my clients is “Have you talked to your partner about how you’re feeling?” The answer is mostly always no, because of the fear of the angst it might cause. I hear a lot of men say they want to keep the peace or don’t want to risk upsetting their partner.
On why vulnerability is the mark of a truly great man
I know for me, if a man isn’t honest and authentic, I would find it hard to date him. How can I open up and be vulnerable if he is hiding his true feelings? False bravado is boring and women can see through it. As Brene Brown author of Dare to Lead says, true courage is to be vulnerable. A confident man is one that can be honest.

It wasn’t that long ago that wearing a suit sans tie was a definite sartorial no-no. Considered a marker of distinction and class, the humble necktie has stood as a significant social marker for centuries.
But as social moves change, so too does the way we dress. For the modern-day chap, a suit without a tie can perfectly straddle the line between corporate and cool — effortlessly transporting you from the board room to the bar.
Here, we explain how to pull it off with nonchalance and a heavy dose of swagger.
In This Story…
How To Wear A Business Suit Without A Tie

First things first. Wearing a suit without a tie is different to just pulling it off after a long day in the office. The latter is an afterthought whereas the former is a commitment to a look — the distinction is important.
If you’re trying this out for the first time, start with the basics. Look at pairing a navy suit with a plain white shirt. Given this is a more casual look for the office, seek out premium shirt fabrics that will give your ensemble a luxurious edge. We’d recommend a sateen-finish shirt, opting for a heavier weave as this also reduces the chances of creasing.
Style your look by leaving the top button undone — it’s as simple as pie but when pulled off, looks sharp as hell. And whatever you do, don’t allow any undershirt to peak out from the open neck.
How To Wear A Casual Suit Without A Tie

Wearing a more casual suit without a tie sounds fairly basic. And it is, if done well. However, there are a couple of key pointers to keep in mind to ensure you stay sharp and not sloppy.
As a starter, it pays to think about what kind of suit you’re wearing. If you’re in a linen suit or light cotton suit, look at pairing it with a plain poplin shirt. The weight of the fabrics will balance each other out and ensure the elements of your outfit don’t clash. We’re loyalists to block colours and keeping it simple; a taupe suit with a pale blue shirt looks sensational as does an olive suit with a white shirt.
If you’re going for a more casual aesthetic, think about the style of the suit too, looking for details like patch pockets and more robust twill fabrics. Suit Supply has an enviable selection as do the likes of P. Johnson and Steve Caldera.
When pairing a less-structured suit jacket with a shirt (think half or unlined), you run the risk of your collar slipping under the lapel. To avoid this, steer clear of collar stays (these weigh the collar down) and also get your dry cleaner to iron a crease into the collar.
This will help stop it from flying away and ensure you remain polished regardless of the shenanigans you’re up to.
How To Wear A Double Breasted Suit Without A Tie

The double-breasted suit is a bold sartorial statement, not for the faint of heart. However, wearing it sans tie can be a helpful way to soften this sometimes severe look and make the right kind of stylistic splash.
If you are taking on the double breaster, go for a lighter construction in a cotton or linen. Also opt for soft Neapolitan tailoring, particularly around the shoulders. This helps avoid that 80s fat cat look this style of jacket is synonymous with.
When it comes to the shirt itself, focus on a high collar that’s going sit above the lapels of your jacket. Given your jacket will almost always stay buttoned up too, go for high-contrast colours that will pop against the suit fabric. This can be a great opportunity to play with bolder prints like candy-stripes and self-checks.
How To Accessorise A Suit Without A Tie

Accessorising a suit without a tie is all about the details. Given this can be such a simple look, you’ll benefit from selecting luxe finishing touches like a statement watch or pocket square that adds personality and also elevates the ensemble.
A bracelet/watch combo peaking from the end of a sleeve is a great way to lean into this more casual form of suiting. Look for woven options or even classics like a Cartier Love bracelet to really amp things up.
When it comes to pocket squares and lapel pins, look at it as an opportunity to bring some colour to your look — particularly if you’re wearing a classic combo like a white shirt and navy suit. Bold pocket squares in shades like pink, orange and green offer a sensational contrast point.
The shoes you wear with a suit are entirely dependent on the degree of formality you need to adhere to. In this instance, given you’re without a tie, think about options that are slightly more casual than formal, even if it’s just adding some colourful socks to your standard black Brogues.
If you do have the opportunity to push the envelope, a suit without a tie can also be a great chance to explore some more alternative footwear options. Particularly if you’re in a casual suit, you can afford to look at loafers or even crisp sneakers to give your suiting a more urban, avant-garde edge. Wear these without socks and have your trousers cropped to a shorter length so that the hem skims the top of your foot.
Suit Without Tie FAQ
To pull off a suit sans tie, your shirt must be made of premium fabric with a heavier weave. A shirt with sateen-finish is your best option because it is less like to wrinkle. Keep the top button of your shirt undone. Of course. Not wearing a tie with double-breasted suits soften the severe look. Choose a suit with a lighter construction and with a Neapolitan tailoring. For your shirt, go for high-contrast colour with a high collar. With a casual suit, you can wear loafers or crisp sneakers. Wear them without socks with your trousers cropped, the hem barely skimming the top of your foot. How to wear suit without a tie?

If you thought putting together your outfit for the morning was difficult then spare a thought for the perennially stylish Michael B. Jordan.
Not only is the man one of the most sought after assets in Hollywood at the moment, he also managed to do what little men have accomplished in the menswear space — a complete white pinstripe suit dedicated for summer duties.
Wakanda’s sartorial scene won’t know what hit them.
Jordan was spotted earlier in the week in Florida at the CNN & WarnerBros NABJ event. Whilst the 32-year-old American actor has a long standing affirmation of bold suits thanks to his stylish Ade Samuel, his latest all-white ensemble is definitely one of the hardest to pull off. Featuring a full white blazer and white trousers with contrasting grey pinstripe, Jordan pared down the formal look with a fitted crew neck tee in white. The look’s hue was further enhanced with white lace-up derby shoes to complete this summer ensemble that’s fit for any Miami Vice nostalgia moment.
As always, Jordan polished off the look with his ultra-thin Piaget Altiplano set in 18K white gold. It’s the same ultra-thin timepiece the ‘Creed’ actor has been rocking all month which retails for around $36,000.
Think you have what it takes to pull off a full white suit? You do now with a little help from us.

You may have told your family you went to see the Louvre but let’s be honest: looking at Michaelangelo’s Venus de Milo probably wasn’t the erotic highlight of your Parisian summer.
Whether your eyes wander like the Mona Lisa’s at home too, or whether you feel particularly free to roam on holiday, Tinder has just released some sexy data which has exposed Australian travellers’ guiltiest geographic secrets.
View this post on Instagram
From the press release: “as we all bunker down during the winter months… Tinder [has] pull[ed] data on where its Australian users are ‘Passporting’ to around the world this season.”
Before we get into where they are going; what the heck is a Tinder passport?
“If you’re not in the know about Tinder Passport, it’s a feature available to Tinder Plus and Tinder Gold subscribers where users can change their location to connect with people anywhere in the world.”
This means that you can search city by city to swipe and match with people in different countries and continents, all from home, setting up a date — in advance — for each location you plan to visit.
Not only is this is handy for “making friends” at your destination before a holiday, but “broadens your dating horizons beyond the usual 1 to 123km radius,” reducing travellers’ dependence on tour operators like Contiki for socialisation opportunities overseas.
However, despite their self-professed love for culture and coffee, it turns out Australians harbour a guilty secret they may not be ready to admit even to themselves: they care about sex and sun almost as much as the English.
Oh and, to rub salt into the tequila, this year the museums and architecture of continental Europe have fallen by the wayside, too, in favour of more “buzzing” destinations.
“Aussies love… chasing the summer in Europe and living their best life in hip beach bars. But the number one Passport destination this winter is actually Los Angeles; a popular location thanks to its direct flights from major AU cities and cool beach culture.”
“Coming in second,” Tinder continued, “is London, always a favourite with the Aussies – users could be Passporting to revel in the great British summer or looking to find love Notting Hill-style.”
The rest of the data suggested that people-heavy destinations, as you would expect, were most effective in facilitating matches, with New York, Tokyo and Bangkok all making the top 10.
The list also had a surprising leaning towards sports, with Tinder users “passporting” to Rio de Janeiro, the fifth most Tindered-in-advance destination, presumably to set up some after-hours fun during the FIFA Women’s World Cup.
Closer to home, Auckland came in at number eight, with the data suggesting that many Australians heading to NZ for their winter skiing break are “getting a head start on dating options before hitting the slopes.”
Whatever the precise reasons, this list shows Tinder users in Australia are a worldly bunch exploring their options well beyond the stereotypical Euro Summer 2019.
