Chafed thighs, jock itch, swamp ass, bacne… excessive sweating is (excuse the pun) the pits. No one likes a clammy handshake or a soaked-through sleeves during an important presentation.
Hyperhidrosis – the spelling bee word for extreme perspiration – is a serious problem that affects millions of men, who sweat four to five times more than normal. If you’re one of them, try these eight tips to stay cooler, drier, and sweat-free when it counts. Your white shirts will thank you.
In this story…
Cut Back On Caffeine
Your morning pick-me-up can make you clammy for two reasons. One, caffeine stimulates your central nervous system, which activates your sweat glands. Two, the heat from the beverage can be enough to make your body feel hot, causing it to sweat to cool itself down. You have three options to solve the problem. One, skip the joe entirely. Two, swap your hot brew for an iced version. Three, get your caffeine fix from a food source instead.
Hold The Heat
Spicy foods have plenty of benefits, but keeping you high and dry isn’t one of them. Spices, like caffeine, can activate your brain’s neurotransmitters, tricking your body into thinking it’s in danger and activating the fight or flight response. The result is a stress-related spike in sweating. On top of that, the capsaicin in spicy peppers triggers a type of nerve ending that responds to warmth, leading your body to think it’s overheating. Its natural response to cool things down? You guessed it: sweat.
Up The Ante With Antiperspirant
Deodorant is only half the battle. Though it will mask the stench that comes from excessive perspiration, it won’t to anything to actually stop the sweat. For that you need an antiperspirant that plugs your sweat glands to actively prevent the drip.
Time It Right
Timing is everything. For an antiperspirant to be most effective, it should be applied to clean and dry armpits at night before you go to bed, giving the active ingredients maximum time to take effect. Apply it during the day, when you’re already drenched, and you risk your sweat washing it away before it can take effect.
Dress Strategically
Stick to cool and breathable fabrics like cotton and linen, and invest in quality workout clothes with wicking capabilities. Don’t skip socks in closed-toe shoes if you have sweaty or smelly feet – not only do they help absorb sweat, they also prevent your shoes from turning into moist breeding grounds for bacteria and fungus. Change your shoes and socks regularly, and don’t put on anything that’s already soaked in sweat. If all else fails, hide the sweat as best you can in dark colours and distracting patterns.
Embrace Your Inner Buddha
Any situation in which you feel stress or anxiety can make you sweat. For a hippie-approved solution, learn to keep your cool and lower your anxiety levels in natural ways. Practice deep breathing, meditation, or any other relaxation technique that tickles your fancy. Regular exercise can also help lower your body’s stress hormone levels.
Talk To A Doctor
For truly sweaty beasts, there are maximum-strength, doctor-prescribed fixes. The least invasive options are prescription-grade antiperspirants and oral medications that block the nerve impulses to your sweat glands. Or, if you’re prepared to go full Real Housewives, talk to a doctor about getting regular Botox injections, which temporarily deactivate your perspiration-producing glands. One treatment should last at least six months.
Take A Cold Shower
Anything that lowers your body’s core temperature will help you stop sweating sooner. For a low-tech, low-cost solution, hop in a cold shower. Dry armpits aren’t the only reason you may be glad you did.

Burning the candle at both ends, getting overloaded, stretched to your limit… Everyone, no matter what they do for work, has likely encountered burnout at at least one point in their life. It’s incredibly common.
Society recognises it as real – it’s why we have things like annual leave – yet burnout sits in a weird grey area when it comes to getting a professional diagnosis or treatment.
Because there are many overlaps in symptoms, it’s often undiagnosed or misdiagnosed, most commonly as depression. But the treatments are not the same. A lack of clear (or up to date) scientific or diagnostic literature also impacts how burnout is treated in our society.
But one Australian academic is hoping to not only change the way burnout is defined and diagnosed but is also trying to change the way we deal with burnout – not only as individuals but as society.
Professor Gordon Parker AO is one of Australia’s leading mental health experts. Scientia Professor of Psychiatry and Head of the School of Psychiatry at the University of New South Wales; founder of the Black Dog Institute and its initial Executive Director; Director of the Division of Psychiatry at Sydney’s Prince of Wales Hospital… It’s fair to say that there are few others in the country with his level of expertise.
Prof. Parker, along with the Black Dog Institute’s Gabriela Tavella and Kerrie Eyers, has co-authored a book simply titled Burnout, which aims to be the world’s first practical diagnostic for burnout, designed to be used both by laymen and clinical professionals. Set to be published in July, it should be an absolute game-changer.
DMARGE spoke exclusively with Prof. Parker, who relates that the book is sorely needed to fill a gap in both popular and professional knowledge:
“The topic is not in the general education of most health professionals so they either miss the diagnosis or call it stress or depression. Conversely, if you have primary anxiety, depression or stress you will still meet current syndromal definitions of burnout, leading to a false-positive diagnosis of burnout.”
“That’s why we developed the Sydney Burnout Measure (arguing why it is a better measure) and detail how clinical reasoning must be applied to exclude false-positive diagnoses of burnout due to psychological or physical states,” he says.
RELATED: Master Trainer Reveals Most Effective Exercises For Reducing Anxiety
Prof. Parker relates that “the 24/7 cycle of being constantly on-call” that the modern workplace often demands of us significantly contributes to the onset of burnout in our professional lives.
This is also something that’s arguably become more of an issue over the last year and a half: working from home, something many of us had or continue to have to do thanks to the pandemic, further erodes the boundaries between one’s professional and personal lives and can make burnout even worse or more likely.
But of course, burnout isn’t just a work-related phenomenon, even if our current understandings of it might suggest so.
The World Health Organization’s International Classification of Diseases, for example, does recognise burnout, but as explicitly an “occupational syndrome” – that is, it does not consider it to be a medical condition or mental disorder, and says the term should relate “specifically to phenomena in the occupational context and should not be applied to describe experiences in other areas of life” – which is a bizarrely narrow definition.
You can also get burned out creatively or emotionally – and work isn’t just your 9-5. Indeed, Prof. Parker shared with DMARGE that women are more likely to get burned out than men “as they often have demanding family responsibilities (older parents and kids) on top of any formal work.”
RELATED: ‘More Energy & Better Decisions’: Simple Yet Genius Life Hack You Need To Know
While Prof. Parker was rather circumspect (not wanting to give too many details about what’s in his book away, naturally), he did have this to say:
“Some depressive conditions needs meds, others need psychotherapy. Burnout needs correcting work stressors, destressing strategies (e.g. mindfulness, meditation) and modulating any pre-disposing personality style.”
This can sometimes be a particular challenge for men. Not only does our macho culture often denigrate psychotherapy as well as anti-depressants, etc., but as Luke Macleod, meditation expert and founder of Soul Alive has shared with DMARGE, men often find it hard to wrap their heads around mindfulness.
RELATED: Expert Unravels The Meditation Myths Australians Still Believe
But there’s never been a better or more important time to start taking burnout more seriously. COVID-19 might have only added to our collective stress but it’s also forced many of us to reflect upon our health in a more holistic sense. We don’t want a return to ‘the new normal’ – and that includes a return to a way of life that burns us out too quickly or frequently.

Choosing where to invest one’s money, especially in 2021, is a real challenge. The property market is hot, but the cost of entry is untenable for most. Bonds and term deposits are stable, but with record low interest rates, they’re not a good use of one’s money. The stock and cryptocurrency markets are absolutely insane right now, but they’re volatile…What if we told you that investing in sneakers, of all things, was an option. More to the point, not only is it an option, but that building a sneaker stockpile might even be a safer bet than stocking up on shares (or the latest ‘to the moon’ cryptocurrency)?StockX, the leading e-commerce marketplace for in-demand sneakers and other luxury collectibles, recently released a new report highlighting the rise of unconventional investments such as sneakers, trading cards and vinyl figures among Gen Z and millennial consumers, and how some of these investments have outperformed the S&P 500.Sceptical? DMARGE spoke exclusively with StockX senior economist Jesse Einhorn, who puts it this way: “while newer alternative assets are less predictable, things like sneakers and collectibles have proven to be stable investments,” he relates.
“[Our report] looks at the price appreciation of four of the fastest-growing product categories on StockX. All four of the StockX indexes featured in this report – Air Jordan 4, Nike Air Max 1, KAWS figures, and basketball trading cards – outperformed both the S&P 500 and the S&P/ASX 200.”
“With the exception of trading cards, which often see large swings in value, StockX asset classes are also less volatile. Our report finds that Air Jordan 4s, Air Max 1s and KAWS collectible figures tend to see steady, consistent appreciation over time.”
“One stabilizing factor is that a large number of people are still purchasing sneakers to wear and collectibles to display and own long-term. This limits the supply of new, ‘deadstock’ products available for sale. It also puts upward pressure on prices and keeps volatility in check.”
RELATED: ‘The Devil Wears Nike’: Sportswear Giant Loses Control Over Its Own Bloody ReleasesEinhorn also explains that the rise of sneakers as an asset class is “simply a change in generational thinking – a paradigm shift.”
“Next-generation consumers are reconceiving what it means to invest today. They’re purchasing everything from sneakers to apparel to collectibles with future returns in mind.”
“In fact, according to a recent survey conducted by The Harris Poll on behalf of StockX, 23% of American adults have purchased or plan to purchase limited-edition sneakers in 2021 and among them, 37% say they are motivated by the investment opportunity. Additionally, among the American adults who have purchased collectibles, nearly half name ‘future worth or investment value’ as a top consideration.”
“These numbers indicate the remarkable convergence between consumer goods and tradable assets, and signal an immense opportunity for growth in this space.”
Einhorn also suggests that the pandemic played “a key role”, beyond simply economic pressures:“A lot of people found themselves stuck at home, and while there, they rediscovered old collections. We saw this especially with sports trading cards and Pokémon cards. There was a rediscovery and reengagement with childhood hobbies, and a realization that, in some cases, the items they collected years ago are now worth an enormous amount of money.”RELATED: Expert’s Warning For Australians Looking To Capitalise On Silver Investment ‘Hype’

In this world of LinkedIn buzzwords and cringe-worthy Facebook advertisements (you know, where the greasy guy with glasses shows you first his garage full of Lamborghinis, then his bookshelf), it’s easy to become cynical about the self-help industry. But the truth is that – though there’s no online course that can do the hard work for you – making intelligent incremental changes to your life can generate exponential results.RELATED: ‘More Energy & Better Decisions’: The Awesome Mind Hack Every Modern Human Should KnowOn that note: seven-time World Champion surfer Layne Beachley shared a piece of advice a couple of months ago that really got us thinking – and which we believe is more relevant than ever right now, as many people around the country are in lockdown or living disrupted lives.
“If we wait for motivation, it may never come. By choosing discipline, we give ourselves the power to create results of our own.”
“Discipline thrives on honesty and authenticity. With discipline, you can allow yourself to dislike a task, and commit to doing it anyway.”DMARGE asked two further Australian icons for their thoughts on this (the interviews also occurred before the lockdown was put into place, or before the latest COVID outbreak in Sydney. We think they are useful nonetheless).NRL legend and Lexus Ambassador Anthony Minichiello told us: “Given each day brings with it something new, it is to be expected that motivation levels may ebb and flow day to day. Life also loves to throw curveballs, often impacting our schedule or plans which in turn can impact our day-to-day motivation.”“For me, this is most evident when it comes to my daily exercise regime. Health and wellbeing is a huge part of my life, so I try to incorporate several different sports and activities throughout the week, as I found variety helps my motivation levels.”“I mix between tennis, a Minifit bodyweight workout, lifting weights at home, going to the gym to do gymnastics and callisthenics training, resistant band training or even just a quick 6-minute core workout. I like to give the body, and in turn my mind, lots of variety, so on days where I’ve had a busy one and may lack motivation, I am disciplined enough to get some exercise in, no matter how quick it is.”“Following this routine, and making sure I stick to my goals, has become a habit for me. Fitness and working out has become a lifestyle for me, not a chore, so even when my motivation may be low, discipline kicks in to ensure I get the job done.”Mini also told us: “I’m a lover of life, and I am lucky that my mindset often is a positive one. However, I can understand and sympathise with those who do have those down moments in life, especially given the problems the world is facing from the pandemic.”RELATED: Psychologist Reveals How Much Leeway To Give Yourself In Isolation“What I’ve learnt, especially because of COVID-19, is to always look after yourself and to champion self-care. The three simple things below are practices I implement in my daily life and are steps everyone can take to look after their mental health.”
- Get 7 to 8 hours of sleep consistently. Sleep has the biggest impact on our physical, mental and emotional health, yet it’s the one thing people forgo the most
- Hydrate your body. Most people go through their day dehydrated and don’t think hydration plays a role in brain fog. Prevent afternoon crashes and boost your concentration and energy by always starting the morning with 400 to 500ml of water
- Schedule into your diary every day, or even just once a week, something you love doing. Now, I’m loving tennis, so I make a conscious effort to put a time in my diary once a week, or every fortnight when the schedule gets a little crazy. It might be as simple as a walk, or just catching up with friends for a laugh, however, it is so important that we don’t disregard these little things, as they do wonders to improve our mental health
DMARGE also spoke to Australian big wave surfer, author, keynote speaker and Lexus Australia ambassador Mark Visser.Mark told us when it comes to sustaining motivation, the biggest thing for him to keep “front of mind” is that “life is not linear.”
“Things never happen exactly the way we want it to, and when they don’t, it is very easy to fall into the trap of thinking we have taken a backwards step or have failed in some sort of way.”
“To be motivated and inspired is fantastic, but I think it is important to be present in each moment. Sometimes you just need to check in with yourself, you might need to take a day off, so you can see what’s really going on, adjust to a new game plan, and take stock of any key learnings or lessons to be taken away.”
“I find myself becoming impatient with things I’ve wanted right away. I often laugh when I learn or discover new information that comes through unexpected, and this completely reshapes the outcome of what I was wanting for the better.”
“Motivation may never always be consistent but accepting that life may throw you curveballs and being ok with this process in each moment requires discipline and a strong belief in yourself and your abilities.”Mark also shared the biggest mental health lesson he learnt in 2020.“Focus on what is right for me. It is easy to look over the fence and wonder if the grass is greener on the other side, and envy someone else’s perceived happiness. However, this thinking takes you away from what is truly important to you and distracts you from your path and your journey.”
“When I found myself getting caught in this trap, I forced myself to be present and ground my thinking. It is so important to follow your own passions, instead of seeing what others have and following theirs.”

There are two things we can be sure of in the world of Formula One. Firstly: Lewis Hamilton is one of the greatest drivers to have ever graced the tarmac. And secondly? Lewis Hamilton will continue to experiment with his personal style. No sooner have we seen the British motoring ace don an outfit that wouldn’t look out of place in The Matrix, he has now been spotted in France looking well-prepared for a weekend festival.
View this post on Instagram
Turning up to the Circuit Paul Ricard ahead of this weekend’s French Grand Prix, Hamilton found himself posing in front of the Mercedes team truck in head to toe black and green. Not quite the same shade of green as can be found on his Mercedes-Benz F1 car, but it’s good to see he’s trying to help fly the flag for the seven-time Championship winning team (who are currently sitting in an unusual second place behind main rivals Red Bull). It’s Hamilton’s boots that have most tongues wagging, however, and as well they should. Hailing from Italian luxury fashion house Bottega Veneta, they’re appropriately called the Tire Boots. Something no doubt close to Lewis’ heart. Retailing for US$1,200, the vegetally-tanned leather Chelsea boots certainly make a statement. In fact, Hamilton was clearly so enamoured by his latest acquisition that he even chose to wear them at any given notice, even when changed into his customary Mercedes-Benz attire. An outlandish outfit for many, but just another day in the life for Lewis. He goes into the upcoming weekend second in the driver standings, four points behind Max Verstappen, where he’ll be hoping to improve upon his 15th place finish at the previous race in Baku at the beginning of June.

A couple, reportedly from Sydney, has been spotted getting intimate in a CBD hotel room by office workers across the street. The incident has sparked shock and horror, but not for the reasons you might think.
Rather than slam the couple for their laissez-faire attitude to curtains, many Australian commenters on social media have criticised the workers for sharing the steamy images (and news outlets for getting so excited about the whole thing).
One Melbourne man, writing under the username erstwhile, wrote underneath Daily Mail's account of the escapade: "It's se x... not mur der. What's the big deal?"
Another user, sandbar, whose profile indicates they are from the Gold Coast, wrote: "Gee I only get a fifteen minute lunch break must be in the wrong union."
Another joker, from Melbourne, said: "Apologies, we should have drawn the curtains."
Others questioned whether it was appropriate for such images to have been recorded: "I thought it was illegal to record & distribute this kind of activity without their consent," one user from Brisbane commented, to the tune of 24 upvotes.
User GG Lopez from Sydney added: "Wow couples having sex in a room. Do these hats [sic] the story here. Workers not doing there job and taking on the moniker of voyeur's."
"Go home and have sex yourselves instead of worrying about the he corporate dollar and material possessions and lighten up a little."
I'd sack the workers for invading couples privacy!

Twitter user @MrChutchy wrote: "I'd sack the workers for invading couples privacy!"
Another Daily Mail commenter from the United States saw the funny side, writing; "I hope they held up score cards," while another asked: "Do the office 'workers ' actually do any work?"
News.com.au reports the incident went down as follows: "Watching on from the building opposite the CBD hotel, one worker took the natural course of action – and got their phone out to record the pair’s steamy session."
"'I mean, maybe they’re into voyeurism?' one of the workers could be heard saying in the video," news.com.au reports.
"The couple carried on with their midday rendezvous before taking a minor break, then continuing – to the apparent delight of their audience," (news.com.au).
This isn't the first romantic episode to be splashed across news screens this year. Though more sedate in comparison, the tale of this couple's monumental Paris f*ck up, which DMARGE wrote about in March, proves there is more than one-way romantic gestures can go astray.
Similarly, this story of a South Korean hotel apologising to honeymooners for an embarrassing sauna mistake shows not all acts of exhibitionism are intentional.
Moral of the story? Never assume those windows are that tinted, people.

Chopping wood in the forest with your shirt off; being able to fix any problem with a car; drinking straight whiskey from the bottle. These things are still considered by many to be the archetype of masculinity.Though we’re all now (finally) aware there’s slightly more to being a man than all that, we’d be lying if we said we didn’t still feel a pressure to live up to the stereotypes at least a little. Not to mention: being fit and strong is damn useful (not to mention, usually, a sign of good health). So what happens when your flannel shirt starts sliding off your skinny shoulders, your wrench keeps slipping from your fingers and whisky starts to become a night cap not a night starter? As your testosterone slowly dwindles away after your 30s onwards, the above caricature may start to hit a little too close to home. The primary sex hormone in males, testosterone is the key ingredient that helps to develop a man’s nether regions, sees him through puberty and is what we can impart blame upon for our hairy (or not so hairy) bodies (or bald heads), it’s something all men need. But, as we get older, the level of testosterone in our bodies starts to decline, usually between the ages fo 30 to 39. Worse: other external factors can cause it to decline at a faster rate. In situations where men exhibit lower levels of testosterone – or T – that would otherwise be considered normal, there are testosterone supplements that can be taken to help top you up.For some high-profile celebrities, testosterone supplements are also taken to keep energy levels on the up, which they claim assists them in remaining successful in life. Joe Rogan, for example, has previously admitted on an episode of his podcast (start at 34:30) that he takes testosterone supplements, citing age as the primary reason. Though he claims not to be taking anything crazy, but rather just raising his testosterone to what it used to be naturally when he was 27, others are still not convinced. There is still a stigma around admitting you take testosterone supplements. As Rogan points out, guys who get older feel too embarrassed to talk about the fact their bodies are changing, and their hormone levels are depleting, so he sees no reason to not take supplements. We agree that there is a stigma. But the question is: is it deserved? Are we irrationally afraid of testosterone supplements or is there good reason to be suspicious?Rogan claims testosterone supplements help him to feel young and perform to his full potential. “It’s really simple, I want my body to work better, I want it to perform better.”“So I talked to doctors, and I liked to talk to jacked doctors. The doctors that I know, that work in hormone replacement, they’re all like in their 60s, and they look like they’re in their 40s.”He further admits it’s not just as simple as popping a few pills, as you need to make sure your diet and sleeping habits are good, and you should also get a blood test first to actually check your current hormone levels. It would be silly to resort to testosterone supplements if you’re not already doing all you can to maximise your health with your sleep and diet.RELATED: Lebron James’ Ketogenic Diet Could Be Your Ticket To Becoming A Shredded Beast…But At What Cost? It’s also unclear whether Rogan is referring to him taking supplements or whether he has been prescribed actual T by his doctors – something potentially dangerous, which you can only get on a prescription basis. This is significantly more risky than supplements. The focus of this article is not on this kind of prescription therapy, but rather on over the counter supplements – and whether they are a rip-off or effective. In any case: masculine icons like Rogan are helping testosterone supplements are being seen as less of a taboo and more something that more men are considering integrating into their daily lives.Indeed, Greg Young, co-founder of Body Science told DMARGE that “the last decade has seen much better education about testosterone supplements, which has resulted in opening the conversation around them and drawing attention to their widespread benefits.”“Their benefits expand far beyond the commonly known ones, such as increased muscle strength, physical endurance and sexual function, but to longevity, mood, mental acuity benefits and many more.”DMARGE dove into the deep end to ask: what are the benefits, and what are the risks of taking testosterone supplements in 2021.
What Are Testosterone Supplements?
So, we’ve already waxed lyrical about testosterone supplements and who takes them for what reasons, but we haven’t yet dived into what they actually are. Time for a biology lesson.Testosterone supplements are usually herbal remedies that all claim to have benefits with regards to improving sex drive and sperm count, aiding with an increase in muscle mass, and helping to develop your overall body composition. However, it must be said that – according to Healthline – there is actually little research to support their effectiveness, and it could be various lifestyle factors that are actually causing a decline in your levels of T.Testosterone supplements can include:
- Vitamin D
- D-Aspartic Acid
- Tribulus Terrestis
- Fenugreek
- DHEA
- Creatine
- Zinc
- Ashwagandha
Who Should Take Testosterone Supplements?
Your initial reaction to this question (and ours too) would be to say it’s mainly older guys who are advised to take testosterone supplements. But according to Greg, that’s not necessarily the case.As Greg tells us, “All men can find benefit in a natural testosterone booster, and Body Science expert Dr Brad McEwen adds men and even women of all ages can have reason to take them.”
“It’s important to note here that a natural testosterone booster is not adding ‘more’ of the hormones to your body, it is simply enhancing what is already there.”
“Our busy lifestyles, training regimes and constant daily stimulants, all play a role in diminishing our testosterone. This can often lead to us feeling sluggish, demotivated and more succumbing to other low testosterone related symptoms.”“A great example of a natural testosterone booster is the Body Science Triandrobol Test, which is loaded with high quality, therapeutic ingredients at clinical dosages. It also includes Vitamin K2, which has some incredible research around supporting long-term cardiovascular and bone health.”And, speaking to Brad’s earlier words that men and women of all ages can take T supplements, Greg continues,
“What’s also interesting is that many of the studies which follow the positive effects of testosterone supplementation on ‘middle-aged’ test subjects, ‘middle-aged’ is considered 25 years old and above!”
“This is because, although T is the main hormone associated with muscle mass, strength gains and of course, muscle retention, many of today’s T supplements combine other ingredients that work in synchronicity with testosterone to increase benefits and results for those of all ages.”
“We have young, busy professionals, entrepreneurs and university students who work full-time jobs, train daily and lead busy lives. They often lack sleep and don’t get to recover optimally from their training or day-to-day lives, this is a recipe for lowering your testosterone levels.”
“The same goes for young men who exert themselves heavily (athletes for example) they are likely to require a ‘boost’ to assist the regulation of testosterone levels in their body to ensure they are constantly performing at their best.”
Who Shouldn’t Take Testosterone Supplements?
Anyone who is not convinced by their claims, and who has been made suspicious about the lack of evidence for their effectiveness (see more on that below).
Which Celebrities Take Testosterone Supplements?
53-year-old Joe Rogan, 53-year-old Daniel Craig, 57-year-old Jeff Bezos, 65-year-old Mel Gibson, 74-year-old Sylvestre Stallone, 73-year-old Arnold Schwartzenegger, 49-year-old Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson and 47-year-old English singer Robbie Williams have all been alleged to have taken some form of testosterone supplements at some point in their lives. It is widely believed to be likely The Rock, Schwartzenegger and Stallone took more than supplements – and took steroids or had replacement therapy – at some point, with The Rock admitting he tried it briefly as a teenager when he had no idea how it worked. Steroids are significantly more effective, and significantly more risky than supplements (which can also be risky in themselves).
Do Testosterone Supplements Work?
As with anything you think about putting into your body, it’s normal to have reservations about whether they’ll have an actual effect or not. With products such as protein powders, for example, they all claim to have benefits with regards to increasing strength and muscle mass etc. But within that you have protein powders of varying qualities, which some users claim to either be incredibly bad or incredibly good. You’re not going to know until you try for yourself. For testosterone supplements, you can be pretty sure you’re going to see some benefit, without needing to be as cautious with the brand, Greg from Body Science (a supplement company) claims.Greg tells DMARGE, it’s common for people supplementing with a testosterone booster to experience any of the following:
- Enhanced sexual desire, male sexual performance and function
- Improved exercise performance and the work capacity of muscles
- Improved strength and muscle gains
- Reduced percentage of body fat
- Increased memory
- Increased mood
- Improved muscle retention, growth and overall body composition
- Better bone health
- Improved heart & blood health
“Negative side effects from natural testosterone boosters are uncommon,” he adds. And, with regards to Joe Rogan’s claims that they give him extra energy in his later life, Greg agrees that testosterone supplements certainly have their uses.“Not only of older men, but all males. In a recent episode of the Body Science podcast I spoke to Dr Chris McLellan about recent studies linking low testosterone levels to conditions such as depression, inflammation, infertility, muscle degradation, obesity, heart disease, insulin resistance, metabolic disorder and more.”
“A commonly known side effect of low testosterone is decreased energy, overall body fatigue and a low recovery rate from exercise, therefore improving your levels can improve these symptoms.”
Are There Any Risks?
According to Healthline one risk with natural testosterone supplements is if you do it without a medical professional taking a holistic view of your life and diet, you could end up taking too high levels of certain vitamins and minerals. This is not good, but isn’t typically anywhere near as bad as the side effects you can get from hormone replacement therapy or steroids. The main risk, then, to natural boosters, would appear to be wasting your money for little results. While Greg claims there are very few side effects recorded for natural testosterone boosters, the same can’t quite be said for other methods of increasing the levels of testosterone in your body. As Healthline says, testosterone replacement therapy – a method used to counteract naturally low levels of testosterone in the body, known as hypogonadism, can come with its side effects.Note that testosterone replacement therapy is different to taking natural testosterone boosters.Testosterone replacement therapy is only recommended to those who exhibit genuinely low levels of T in their body, and it has been found to potentially increase one’s risk of contracting “prostate cancer and cardiac issues.”Therapy can also lead to other issues including testicular shrinkage, enlarged breasts, acne flares and sleep apnea.Prescription hormone supplements can have a number of side effects including:
- increased chance of developing heart disease
- sleep apnea
- prostate growth
- high red blood cell counts, which could increase the risk of clotting
- acne
- breast swelling or tenderness
- ankle swelling
Because of these risks, supplements that contain actual testosterone are considered controlled substances and are available by prescription only.
Anything Else To Know?
Greg adds, “if anyone starting a new supplementation regime has reservations or concerns, we always recommend speaking with your healthcare progressional. Natural testosterone is an extremely safe and effective way of assisting with optimising your natural bodily hormones and to ensure your body is utilising these hormones to your advantage.”“Quality testosterone boosters are formulated from research herbs, minerals and vitamins, therefore unless you have a known sensitivity or condition that could be affected by any of the individual ingredients, the majority of people will find it is not necessary to consult with their doctor.”“My advice, buy from a reputable brand you trust and look at the label before you buy. I would always recommend a product listed not he Australian register of therapeutic goods. Somewhere on the label you’ll find a number, preceded by AUST L. Listed products are considered low risk by the TGA, and companies must manufacture in a world leading manufacturing standard, TGA licensed GMP facility, and be able to demonstrate scientific evidence around therapeutic claims, safety and quality.”
What Do The Naysayers Say?
According to Healthgrades, prescribed testosterone replacement therapy (i.e. the one that carries all the big scary risks mentioned above) is the only treatment proven to boost testosterone.“Testosterone is a controlled substance,” Healthgrades states. “That means you can get it only with a prescription from your doctor. OTC testosterone boosters do not contain testosterone. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) does not regulate these products, so you really don’t know what they contain.”“However, safe ways do exist to enhance your body’s natural testosterone. Diet and lifestyle changes are two examples. Certain dietary supplements might help, too.”Healthline says as an alternative to prescription testosterone supplementation, some people turn to over-the-counter (OTC) options.“These products promise to improve naturally decreasing testosterone levels. They’re often called ‘testosterone boosters’ and typically come in powdered form,” Healthline explains.“These supplements don’t contain actual testosterone or other hormones. Instead, they contain herbs and other substances that are supposed to increase your natural production of testosterone.”“But the evidence that these products are effective is limited.”“Always consult your doctor before taking testosterone boosting products or other dietary supplements. It’s also important to look at the ingredients and evaluate their safety before you try one of these products.”
Are There Studies That Show Testosterone Boosters To Be Ineffective?
A 2019 study from the University Of Southern California found that many supplements on the market merely contain vitamins and minerals, but don’t do anything to improve testosterone.Mary K. Samplaski, MD, assistant professor of clinical urology at the Keck School of Medicine of USC said at the time, “Often, people can be vulnerable to the marketing component of these products, making it difficult to tease out what is myth and what is reality.”As Science Daily reports, “Using a structured review approach, Samplaski and a team of researchers explored the active ingredients and advertised claims of 50 T boosting supplements.”“Researchers performed a Google search with the search term ‘Testosterone Booster,’ thus mimicking a typical internet research for someone looking to increase testosterone levels, and then selected the first 50 products that came up in their search. Then, the team reviewed published scientific literature on testosterone and the 109 components found in the supplements. Zinc, fenugreek extract and vitamin B6 were three of the most common components in the supplements.”“The team also compared the content for each supplement with the Food and Drug Administration’s (FDA) Recommended Daily Allowance (RDA) and the upper tolerable intake level (UL) as set by the Institute of Medicine of the National Academy of Science.”“Of the 150 supplements, researchers came across 16 general claims to benefit patients, including claims to ‘boost T or free T,’ ‘build body lean mass or muscle mass,’ or ‘increase sex drive or libido.'”“While 90% of the T booster supplements claimed to boost testosterone, researchers found that less than 25% of the supplements had data to support their claims. Many also contained high doses of vitamins and minerals, occasionally more than the tolerable limit.”“Unlike drugs, supplements are not intended to treat, diagnose, prevent, or cure diseases, according to the FDA. As such, Samplaski would like to see more regulation around testosterone-boosting supplements to protect consumers. She also would like to explore disseminating handouts to her patients with more accurate information in the hopes that it encourages patients to seek a medical professional for low testosterone issues.”“While no one can escape the effects of aging, Samplaski says there is something men can do to address their concerns. ‘The safest and most effective way for men to boost low testosterone levels is to talk with a medical professional or a nutritionist,'” (Science Daily).
Final Analysis
As Healthline states, “OTC testosterone boosting products make tempting promises to restore muscle mass, sexual function, and overall vitality.”“But proceed with caution if you’re thinking of using one. Most of the ingredients don’t actually increase testosterone levels, and some carry serious health risks.”“A better solution is to see your doctor for a testosterone level test. Your doctor can help you identify treatment options that are best for you.”
