How To Avoid The Dreaded Skinny-Fat Body
How To Avoid The Dreaded Skinny-Fat Body

Picture this. The weather’s heating up and the annual pilgrimage to the local swimming spot is in full swing. Immaculate looking bodies are strewn across the sand like beached whales sporting six packs, massive quads and cheap bronzer. And then you take off your shirt.

No man should ever be subjected to the embarrassing effects of the skinny-fat. It’s that terrible space in body shape limbo where you’re not exactly fat, but not muscular enough to feign brawniness either. Think man-boobs, male muffin tops and jelly arms.

Thankfully there is a way to rid the dreaded skinny-fat look just in time for shirts-off season. Listen up and sweat it out.

What Causes Skinny Fat?

Part of any good solution is knowing a problem’s origins. The skinny-fat phenomenon comes down to diet according to Jordan Ponder, fitness expert and founder of Paramount Recreation Club.

He says that skinny-fat people are those that often have massive weekends, work hard and then stress, leaving little time or energy for regular exercise and a stable diet.

“Skinny-fat is a result of high output during the week. So doing the opposite of that is key. That is, consistent during the week and then on the weekend some kind of moderation.”

In other words, skinny-fat will arise if you pair an absence of physical activity without gaining substantial weight. Ponder simply deems this as being unfit.

“Skinny-fat people who may look fine under clothes have no upper body strength and can’t do a chin up,” says Ponder.

“A slightly bigger person that’s hitting the gym at least has the strength and co-ordination. Skinny fat is an absence of lean muscle mass.”

How To Rid The Skinny Fat

There are specific ways to target the effects of skinny-fat and that all starts with shifting your mindset whilst replacing some cardio with lifting weights.

Forget About Your Weight

What skinny-fat men should be focusing on is their body-fat percentage as this attributes to the appearance of skinny-fat. Skinny-fat bodies carry around 16-25% body fat and the ideal is to get those figures down between 9-12%. Doing this will add definition to your body including your chest and abs.

Run Less, Lift More

Cardio is great for the heart and overall fitness but it will do no you no favours in filling out that XS T-shirt if it’s all the exercise you’re doing. Lifting weights is the quickest way to replace fat with muscles in skinny-fat guys.

Ponder says that doing push/pull leg exercises such as twenty push ups from the ground is a good place to start. From there it’s core strength exercises such pull ups, dead lifts, burpees and other hybrid movements which will help you look cut in the fastest time possible.

“Getting a foundational base established is the goal whether it be extensions or sit ups,” says Ponder.

Once the strength training is in full swing, make sure to change up the exercises constantly or increase the weights and reps so that the muscles continue to grow. It’s as easy as changing up the barbell to dumbbells. If you feel sore afterwards, you’re doing it right.

Kick Your Skinny Fat Eating Habits

Ridding the skinny-fat is a combination of exercise, consistency and diet. In other words, cut down the drinking, smoking and food binging. Ponder notes that avoiding skinny-fat involves having small portion feeds of three to five meals a day – ideally five.

“That’s breakfast, morning tea, lunch, afternoon tea and dinner. Skinny-fat people are skipping breakfast, having coffee, might have a piece of fruit then have a massive lunch like Thai takeaway.”

“After that they don’t really eat much, get home, have a drink and then kick onto dinner.”

Bad idea. Being skinny-fat is a time bomb according to the experts. As Ponder explains, you’ll rarely see many skinny-fat people of middle age – they’re either going downhill or getting better.

Stop Being Lazy

Skinny-fat is extremely easy to rid in a relatively short amount of time (10 weeks) but the issue comes from the fact that skinny-fat men are lazy to begin with. This is what prolongs the duration of skinny-fat bodies well into the months and years.

As such, eating badly and eating very little is the underlying culprit whilst drinking and smoking will compound this.

“If they’re consistent then the results will be super quick,” says Ponder.

“They don’t have weight shift so foundation strength gain can come pretty easy in those four to six weeks of discipline.”

So get moving, you magnificent skinny-fat bastard. See these simple exercises that will get you bigger, faster.

The Coolest Station Wagons & Tourers That Ever Graced The Roads
The Coolest Station Wagons & Tourers That Ever Graced The Roads

Let’s be honest: it’s not often you see the words “cool” and “station wagon” in the same sentence. These days the much-maligned mom mobiles conjure up images of suburban housewives, but once upon a time these cars of the pre-minivan generation were, in fact, cool. Their size and shape makes them extremely practical, and gives them better fuel economy than tall, bulky and decidedly non-aerodynamic SUVs. Plus they’re not pretentious like a bright yellow Hummer or a Victoria Beckham Range Rover.

In celebration of the station wagon, we’ve put together a slideshow of some of history’s coolest classics. Perhaps we’re due for a comeback?

1988 Volvo 240 GLT

88volvo240GLT

More than 2.8 million cars were sold during the Volvo 200 series’ 20-year production run. Available in sedan or station wagon, 6 variations of the 240 series were initially offered: 242L, 242DL, 244DL, 244GL, 245L and 245DL. About one-third of all 240s sold were station wagons, which feature very large cargo space and can accommodate up to seven passengers. The last 200 produced was a blue station wagon built to the Italian specification and named the “Polar Italia,” currently displayed at the Volvo World Museum. The Volvo 240 was Volvo’s best-selling car from 1975 until 1982.

1989 BMW E34 M5 Touring

89BMW-M5-E34touring

The BMW E34 blended BMW tradition with modern technology. The E34 was one of the most reliable luxury cars on the market in its day, and it still considered one of the most dependable BMWs ever made. The M5 version of the E34 was produced from 1988 to 1995. It features an S38 straight-6 engine and, as of its final year of production, a six-speed manual gearbox which followed through to the next generation of the BMW 5 series, the E39. The E34 reached 100 km/h in 5.7 seconds, with a top speed of 250 km/h.

1963 Holden EH

63holden-EH

The homegrown Holden EH was produced by General Motors-Holden’s in Australia from 1963 to 1965. Packing a more powerful engine than its predecessor, the EJ, the EH also made some cleverly chosen styling changes. Along with the aesthetic alterations, the EH’s big draw was its new “Red” motor, which was stronger, smoother, more economical and more powerful than the engine it replaced. A handful of models were produced, including the Standard Sedan, Standard Station Sedan, Premier Sedan, Panel Van and S4, some of which were used for racing.

1980 Mercedes 300TD

80Mercedes-300TD-wagon2

By the admission of Mercedes-Benz itself, the W123 platform was not revolutionary. Instead, it was a solidly built auto constructed from tried and tested design features with engineering innovation kept to a minimum. Introduced in 1976, the W123 platform included a four-door sedan and sleek coupe which were soon joined by the diesel-powered 300TD station wagon in 1978. The 300TD was the first Mercedes wagon and the welcome was warm. Less than a year into production, many dealers had a 12-month waiting list and by the 1980s, the car was on a three-year backlog.

1976 Aston Martin Lagonda

76AstonMartin-Lagonda

The Aston Martin Lagonda was a luxury four-door saloon built between 1974 and 1990. A contrasting, ultra-modern version was introduced in 1976. Facing financial pressure, Aston Martin broke from its history of making 2+2 sports cars to bring in some much-needed funds with a more practical car. The Lagonda combined striking styling with state-of-the-art instrumentation, but has since been called one of the 50 ugliest cars of the last 50 years by Bloomberg Businessweek and one of the 50 worst cars of all time by Time Magazine. Can’t win ‘em all, Aston Martin.

1961 Citroen AMI

Citroen Ami 6 (2)1

The supermini Citroen AMI was produced from 1961 to 1978, and for a time was the best-selling car model in France. Believe it or not, this little-car-that-could was actually a little bit ground-breaking. The Ami and the 1961 Ford Taunus would eventually become the first vehicles with rectangular – as opposed to round – headlamps. Another selling point of the car was its easily removable seats, which were shown in photographs being used as picnic chairs. Some have criticised the car for being “ungainly,” but we prefer to think of it as having a certain awkward charm.

1999 Subaru Legacy

99subaru-legazy

It’s hard to call a car from 1999 “a classic” without feeling old, but the Subaru Legacy deserves it. Subaru celebrated three decades of selling automobiles in the United States by adding special editions to the Legacy lineup. The all-wheel drive wagon came with an enticing package of goodies that included a power moonroof, alloy wheels, a rear spoiler or roof rack, body-colour trim, a power antenna and a seat height adjuster. Provided you give your Sooby the TLC it deserves, its luxury features will work flawlessly even in 2014 and it’ll cruise around corners just like a BMW.

1994 Audi RS2 Avant

94Audi-RS2Avant (1)

The Audi RS2 Avant was a limited edition, high-performance Audi station wagon manufactured for barely over a year from March 1994 to July 1995. What makes it so special? It was Audi’s first RS vehicle, and used the most powerful and thoroughly-developed version of Audi’s inline-five cylinder turbocharged internal combustion engine. Oh, and it was a joint venture between Audi AG and Porsche, so it’s no surprise the Avant was the vehicle that firmly established Audi as a producer of practical high-performance cars.

1972 Volvo P1800ES Shooting Break

volvo-p-1800-es-03

Having originally released the P1800E as a coupe, Volvo decided to switch things up in 1972. The car got a makeover that combined a flat rear with a continuous side window, giving the 2+2-seater a more dynamic stance, more room for luggage and increased space for rear passengers. The result was the Volvo P1800ES Shooting Break, which Volvo advertised as “sort of a flying trunk.” The description may not sound terribly appealing today, but the car had a good run and was well-received until emissions regulations in America forced its retirement.

Morris Minor 1000 Traveller

morrisminor1000traveller

The Morris Minor debuted at the Earls Court Motor Show in London in September 1948. Initially available as a two-door saloon and tourer (convertible), the range was later expanded to include a four-door saloon in 1950, a wood-framed estate (the Traveller) from 1952 and panel van and pick-up truck variants from 1953. The goal was to create a vehicle that combined the luxury and convenience of a good motor car with a price affordable by the working classes. What came out was a car that’s been described as typifying “Englishness,” a “British icon” and a “design classic.”

Daniel Craig’s Unique Timepiece Was The Real Winner At The Golden Globes
Daniel Craig’s Unique Timepiece Was The Real Winner At The Golden Globes

We’re consistently in awe of Daniel Craig’s style, whether it be on the red carpet or hitting the town, but his accessory of choice at this year’s Golden Globe Awards could be one of his most stand-out to date.Attending the awards show in Beverly Hills, California on January 5th 2020, the James Bond star was seen rocking a gold Omega Speedmaster Automatic that, quite frankly, is rare as rocking horse sh*t. We think it’s so rare in fact, that we can’t find it available to buy anywhere online. We’ve put our best watch experts to the test, and believe it to be this Speedmaster. It’s certainly proving to be quite rare, as we can’t find it in stock online, but the last known sale price was US$20,900 (AU30,500). Not exactly what you could call, affordable. He teamed his ultra-rare timepiece with a bespoke double-breasted tuxedo that James Bond himself would kill for, from Savile Row tailors Anderson & Sheppard. The British outfitters use an English Drape cut for their jackets, which features a high armhole and a jacket body that remains in situ. While all custom suits will vary in price, you can expect to pay around £5,000.While he wasn’t attending the Golden Globes representing his role as the British secret agent, he was there with the hope of securing the best actor award for his role as private detective Benoit Blanc in the hit murder-mystery Knives Out!. However, he, unfortunately, lost out to Taron Egerton, who won the award for his portrayal of Elton John in Rocketman. We’d appreciate a private detective of our own to find that damn watch.

Iconic Bondi Icebergs Photo Reveals The Freedom Australians Have No One Else Does

It’s not peeling off your bikini on the French Riviera or getting your thong on in Copacobana: it’s better. That’s right: Australia may be a country of prudes but we have one tradition that puts the rest of the world to shame.Yes: contrary to popular belief, Australia has ~culture~. And it comes in the form of a basic (in every sense of the word) lifestyle quirk that can’t be found anywhere else in the world (no, it’s not brunch).

Being a sophisticated bogan. While the Parisien elite look down their cravats at the Marseille mobsters and while the Barcelona bourgeois sneer at the Cadiz ‘caña’ drinkers and – while we’re at it – while the Rome royals avoid the snarky Sardinians like the plague, in Australia we all – regardless of our annual income – come together to embrace our inner bogan at the beach.

This informal safe space, which starts about one nautical mile out to sea and extends roughly 100 metres past the beach in the other direction (it’s ok to grab a chicken sanger at Bondi Icebergs barefoot, don’t worry) is the one zone where business class snobs and Nike TN ‘hypebeasts’ mount a momentary dress code truce. No judgement, no worries.No-where is this better demonstrated than Bondi Icebergs where Anytime Fitness ragers, bemused backpackers and normally stressed out locals chill in the sun.

There’s no denying the copious amounts of food and drink on offer up the cliff help this ‘sophisticated bogan’ goodwill, with mansion owning CEO’s dressing down and shoestring students dressing up (did you really need that $100 bikini or those Orlebar Brown board shorts? No: butt but Instagram is the new LinkedIn).

Jimmy Fallon’s Big Sneaker Energy Will Have You Reaching For Your Sunglasses

When it comes to donning a pair of stylish sneakers, we’ll always gravitate towards something minimal, white and, usually, leather. Of course, style rules are always meant to be broken, but as appears to be the case for Jimmy Fallon, he’s literally ripped the rulebook up and pushed it to the bottom of the trash pile.Taking an evening stroll around Los Angeles on January 5th, 2020, the late-night talk show host was spotted wearing a pair of Vans with a retina-searing design. The footwear in question is part of the skate company’s Late Night series, which sees pairs of the company’s iconic skate shoes decked out with various junk food designs. Jimmy has opted for tacos to slip over his toes, and carries them off with confidence. They’re no longer available on the Vans website and are seen as a collectible item. We image they would have been worth more in resale value before Jimmy wore them outside.Fortunately, the comedian has paired his out-there footwear with a cool, casual combination of blue jeans and mustard crew neck sweater. However, despite his best efforts to look ‘cool’ and ‘down with the kids’, we feel Jimmy is trying to hold on to his youth a little too much.

The Most Insanely Luxurious Ways To Fly To Europe From Australia
The Most Insanely Luxurious Ways To Fly To Europe From Australia

There’s a time in every young buck’s life when slumming it in economy is the ultimate adventure. There also comes a time in every slightly-older man’s life when he thinks, “Screw that! Give me five stars or give me death.” For that second stage we did some #serious research. After resting our heads (in some cases, sadly, only virtually), on the softest pillows in the sky, laying our lumbars on the most comfortable beds, and sipping champagne in the classiest cabins, let’s just say you aren’t going to miss the sleeping pills, eye masks and crying babies of economy. So let’s get to it: these are the 6 most luxurious ways to traverse the globe.

6. First Class, British Airways

Seats

They claim a good flight’s sleep is virtually guaranteed in British Airways’ First Class. With an opulent fully-flat bed with a quilted mattress, crisp white 400–thread Egyptian cotton duvet and pillow on offer, it’s hard to disagree. They also provide luxurious pyjamas, Qantas-style.

Food

Some of the world’s top chefs contributed to British Airways’ First Class menu. Unsurprisingly, it shows. The main course changes monthly (due to seasonal availability of fresh food), but the focus is always on simplicity and flavours. Naturally, a quintessentially British afternoon tea is served afterwards, and you can order a snack at any time during your flight. As for breakfast, you can opt for full English, fresh continental or just a croissant with coffee—the ball is in your court.

Onboard Facilities

First Class in British Airways is essentially a private “cabin within a cabin,” with personal windows and electronic blinds, plus your own wardrobe. You also have access to a personal entertainment system with a 15″ screen and noise–cancelling headset. This features over 100 movies, TV programmes, 50 music CDs and audio books, as well as 20 interactive games.

Lounge

The Concorde Room lounge at London Heathrow Terminal 5 is renowned for fine dining, champagne and British heritage afternoon tea. It also has a business suite, which has everything you need to carry on working, including a boardroom. To top it all off there are also private cabanas, featuring day beds and en–suite bathrooms, where you can refresh or have a quick snooze. And for the ultimate in relaxation, before or after your flight, check into Elemis Travel Spa and Skin Therapies—available at Heathrow Terminals 3 and 5.

Aircraft

Boeing 777 or Airbus A380.

Price

From $10,000.

5. Suites, Singapore Airlines

Seats

In Singapore Airline Suites, their premium version of First Class, your bedroom will have what you would call in polite company, one heck of an armchair. Upholstered in full grain leather by Poltrona Frau, reclinable to 45° and with an insane swivel mechanism, this bad boy almost renders the entertainment system redundant. That said, you won’t need it to sleep, because your designer suite will also feature an exquisite, fully fledged bed.

Food

Picture this: bone china tableware sits atop crisp linen on your personal dining table. The smell of a mouth-watering entree drifts round the corner. All in the knowledge a main course crafted by Singapore Airlines’ acclaimed International Culinary Panel of chefs is up next. A wine list and selection of spirits to match.

Onboard Facilities

A 32” touchscreen monitor in high definition paired with noise-cancelling headphones will ensure optimum viewing satisfaction. An enhanced KrisWorld entertainment system that saves your playlists and preferences for future flights will make you feel at home. A spacious lavatory—complete with a sit-down vanity counter and boutique toiletries (such as the EDT, body lotion and facial mist from Lalique)—will ensure a quiet sanctuary to refresh, rejuvenate and recharge.

Lounge

Although not every airport will have one, if you’re travelling in Singapore Airline Suites (the premium version of Singapore Airlines’ first class), the place to be is The Private Room—an ultra exclusive lounge nestled within the SilverKris Lounge and the First Class Lounge. (Editor’s note: While First Class Lounge access is for Singapore Airlines Suites/First Class passengers and also for all Star Alliance First Class passengers, The Private Room is restricted to just Singapore Airlines Suites or First Class passengers flying out of Singapore). The main advantage (apart from its exclusivity making you feel like even more of a baller) is that it has a full-service fine-dining restaurant of jaw-slackening quality. The “standard” first class lounge also has excellent food, drink and refresh facilities, but if you’ve snagged a Suite ticket—make the most of it.

Aircraft

Make sure you’re on the Airbus A380 to experience the new suites (pictured above). Otherwise the Boeing 777 is another great experience, but not quite as chic.

Price

From $13,000.

4. First Class, Qatar Airways

Seats

Qatar airlines’ First Class is known for its ample stowage options and an ultra-comfortable fully lie-flat bed with Frette linen and duvet.

Food

A masterclass in indulgence: Qatar Airways‘ First Class signature dishes are developed by world-renowned chefs, and an on-demand menu service is available as well. So make the most of it: enjoy sweet or savoury delicacies whenever you please. Mouth-watering flavours, artful presentation, luxurious table linen and deluxe cutlery are Qatar Airways’ calling card, closely followed by their range of signature drinks that you can enjoy as a refreshment or a complement to your dish.

Onboard Facilities

Bric’s amenity kits and designer sleeper suits by White Company, a world class cabin crew, work spaces with laptop power, USB plugs and on-board Wi-Fi are just some of the lavish onboard facilities you’ll be able to get your hands on here. And when you’re ready to relax, there are over 4,000 entertainment options offered on Qatar’s innovative entertainment system.

Lounge

From Al Safwa and Al Mourjan to its London and French outposts, every First Class Qatar lounge is an experience of pure luxury. London, for instance, showcases Arabian water fountains, a business centre, delicatessan, restaurant and showers. To (virtually) check it out, click here.

Aircraft

Airbus A380.

Price

From $13,000.

3. First Class, Emirates

Seats

The moment you slide the privacy doors closed, your private suite will enable you to unwind in your own world. Enjoy a glass of exclusive wine or champagne, or help yourself to your personal mini-bar. Features include: ambient lighting,  wide range of entertainment and a private cinema. Your seat also converts into a fully flat bed with a mattress. And to prepare you for the day ahead there’s also a vanity table and mirror.

Food

From sumptuous à la carte cuisine to a tasty midnight snack, Emirates’ cabin crew will prepare your meals whenever you fancy them. They will also inspire your palate with regionally inspired dishes, made with fresh, locally sourced ingredients. You can also match your meal with a fine wine, selected by expert sommeliers. Or if you’re after a pre dinner aperitif (or post dinner digestif), you can choose from their list of complimentary cocktails, champagne, beers and spirits.

Onboard Facilities

The main attraction is the trademark onboard bar, reminiscent of a private yacht cabin, available on the A380. Key features include: seating along the windows on each side (it has been recently updated to comfortably accommodate 26 passengers), a light champagne/oak colour scheme, and—of course—the alcohol selection and ambience. Highlights of the private suites include: soundproof curtains, mood lighting and a 55 inch LCD screen.

Lounge

More like a private terminal than an airport lounge, the Emirates First Class lounge features charging stations, children’s play rooms, a fine dining room, wine cellar, barista, a la carte restaurant, freshly baked bread (and French butter), spa, restrooms and showers, smoking room and a sleeping room.

Aircraft

Airbus A380.

Price

From $15,000.

2. First Class, Qantas

Seats

An expansive armchair of calming tones (and in-seat massage capabilities) awaits in your private suite, as well as inflight entertainment, lighting, window shades and a leather ottoman. That’s not to mention the 212cm bed, which (it goes without saying) lays down fully flat, is located in a separate, luxurious bedroom, has Sheridan bedding, 100% cotton woven throw, duvet and memory foam mattress, making for a truly peaceful—nay—divine, sleep. Oh and there’s also a “pillow menu”. Sweet dreams.

Food

Rockpool and Qantas have taken inflight dining to new heights. In doing this Qantas distinguishes itself from other airlines, permitting you to indulge in a tasting menu, or dine from their à la carte menu, offering signature dishes. All meals are designed by Neil Perry, Creative Director of Food, Beverage and Service at Qantas, prepared onboard and made to order with the finest ingredients. In addition, Qantas’ Sommeliers in the Sky can advise you on their selection of award-winning wines and champagne to match your meal.

Onboard Facilities

If you thought Business Class was good, wait until you see the entertainment options in First Class. Blockbuster movies, box set TV, the biggest comedies, and the world’s best documentaries are just a taste of what’s on offer. Your suite is also fitted with the latest technologies, a touch screen, noise-cancelling headphones, power access and a USB port. You also get, of course, Qantas’ signature soft-cotton sleepwear. Designed exclusively by Martin Grant, Qantas’ Creative Director of Fashion, they come with matching slippers and you probably won’t want to take them off. To top it all off is a bespoke amenity kit filled with Refresh indulgent male and female ASPAR products by Aurora Spa including socks, eye mask, dental kit, ear plugs and deodorant.

Lounge

Any traveller that wants a true, premium airport lounge experience should put Qantas’ First Class lounges (or at least the Sydney one) on their bucket list. Features include restaurant dining, lounge dining, bar service, barista, spa, showers and toilets, wifi, Apple computers, meeting rooms, private suites, a library, newspapers and magazines.

Aircraft

Airbus A380.

Price

From $15,000.

1. The Residence, Etihad

Seats

Hah. Seats. If you book into The Residence, you won’t need to think about such trivialities as “seats” or “recline” – you get a 6ft 10 inch double bed, with designer Italian bed linen.

Food

Menus are another laughable concept in The Residence. Here, you’ll have an inflight chef, who will prepare a personalised dining experience for you, using the freshest of ingredients. If you are feeling uninspired there is a range of gourmet menu options to choose from—but we recommend asking for your favourite dish. Whatever it is, your chef can make it.

Onboard Facilities

It’s basically a private three room apartment, with a bedroom, bathroom, living room—and dedicated butler. Highlights include: 27 inch flat screen television (in the bedroom), noise cancelling headsets (in each room), luxurious ensuite shower and toiletries, leather double seat sofa, two dining tables and a 32 inch flatscreen TV (in the onboard lounge).

Lounge

The Residence passengers have access to a private “lounge within a lounge,” inside Etihad’s first class lounge and spa, which features hospitality comparable to a 5 star hotel. With fine-dining prepared in-house, a Spa Centre, Fitness Room, Relax and Recline Room and Cigar Room, you probably won’t want to leave.

Aircraft

The Residence is the centrepiece of Etihad’s A380 superjumbos and 787 Dreamliners.

I Tried The Most Self Indulgent 90-Minute Airline Lounge Experience In The World
I Tried The Most Self Indulgent 90-Minute Airline Lounge Experience In The World

For most of us, we schlep through airports on long haul flights like cattle on their way to the big house. Long faces and sore bones, we uncomfortably contort ourselves into small seats only to do the same whilst waiting for connecting flights. Then there’s those who get to experience the comfort of the very best in airline lounges. A little oasis amongst a sea of tired people where you can escape to relax and recharge. That said, not all lounges are created equal. There are the likes of the Aspire lounge in Amsterdam which guarantees warm Heineken, dirty toilets and a pay per use shower or Cathay Pacific’s incredible ‘The Wing’ lounge located in Hong Kong Airport. We experienced the highest form of luxury last week on a 5-hour layover en route to the Porsche Driving Experience in Kittila, Finland. The Wing takes the lounge experience beyond champagne and caviar and goes ten better with the introduction of the Cabana, possibly the most self-indulgent 90-minute lounge experience ever.Let’s see what all the fuss is about.Flight: QF 117 (Sydney to Hong Kong)Airport: Hong KongLounge: Cathay Pacific The Wing FirstLoyalty Status: Oneworld Emerald

Cathay Pacific’s The Wing is one of Asia’s – maybe the world’s – most luxurious and well-appointed lounges.

Having landed at 5:30 am we were just in time for The Wing to open. The lounge was deathly quiet in comparison to a few hours later. Adorned with chesterfield sofas and soft leather recliners, it’s supreme luxury for business travellers.

Food and beverage heaven in The Haven.

By 7:00am the lounge is buzzing, not with First Class passengers, rather businessmen and women scooting throughout Asia on daily hops. The Haven offers an à la carte menu which I presume if more suited to evening flights. A simple breakfast buffet is also available in the main lounge area. Pour you own Perrier Jouet champagne is also a nice touch.

Cathay Pacific’s Cabanas are very well hidden only available to Oneworld Emerald and First Class passengers.

Usual curiosity and question asking opened the doors to this oasis. Your very own self contained space to relax and recharge. Due to our very early arrival, we made sure we booked a Cabana for the full 90-minutes allowed. Note: Bookings are essential.

The Cabana’s First Class service means you can get changed and relax while they take care of everything.

Get your clothing pressed and returned promptly whilst you shower and freshen up in a fluffy white robe. Sadly I did not need anything pressed. Next time I’ll bring all my laundry.

Your private Cabana is stocked with premium amenities.

Bodywash, shampoo and conditioner provided by Jurlique. More toothbrushes and shower caps than you have teeth or heads. One thing missing was hair product for men with wild post-flight hair.

The Cabana has six main features in the space.

Wardrobe, vanity, washbasin, day bed, shower and… and wait for it… a bath.

The Bath… An airline lounge that goes one up on a massage.

What to do when you have a 5-hour layover? That’s right, you try said bath.

Good thing you have 90-minutes… because the bath takes a while to fill.

I’m the last of the selfie-takers but this one was too good to pass up. After said photo, I sat and waited patiently for 20 minutes for the bath to fill to a modest but not greedy level. (Thinking of the environment here as a blast across the world in a carbon unfriendly jet.)

I used the remaining 60 minutes to soak like a big fat crocodile…

However, I’m not a bath guy. I find them incredibly boring, even on a 5-hour layover. Regardless I was very clean, relaxed and had time to make some calls, post some Instagram stories and generally be a wanker.

An amazing Hong Kong day awaited upon my triumphant return.

What a difference 90 minutes can make. Beautiful sunshine in one of the world’s best airports before jumping on my next Finnair flight to Helsinki. If you’re passing through Hong Kong and are Oneworld Emerald status do yourself a favour and book a Cabana in advance. You’ll be happy with the over the top and unnecessary experience of having a bath in transit.
