When it comes to classic Mercedes-Benz convertibles, they don’t get much better looking than the 190SL. No matter what angle you look at it, you can’t not be moved by the elegant lines and minimalistic styling. Although maybe not quite as rare at the 300SL, the car on which it is based (the first car to use the SL moniker, the 190 was the second), finding one – in immaculate condition at least – can prove difficult. Fortunately, one has just appeared on Carsales for a rather attractive price.
The 190SL was first introduced in 1955 – after making its debut at the 1954 New York Auto Show – with the aim of offering prospective buyers a more affordable option of the 300SL. The 300SL cost US$6,820 for the Coupe and $10,950 for the Roadster, whereas the 190SL demanded just $3,998 for the soft-top model and $4,295 for a model with a removable hard-top.
Despite the lower cost, buyers benefitted from much of the same features as its more expensive sibling, including engineering, detailing and fully independent suspension. However, as expected, the 190SL took a drop in performance as it used a new Type M121 BII 1.9 L straight-four SOHC engine, which delivered 77kW/104hp, and a max speed of around 170kph/106mph.
For many, the most iconic look for the 190SL to rock was a silver paint job and red leather interior, and that’s exactly what you get with this Carsales listing. This particular model – a left-hand drive – underwent a full restoration to original standards in 2013 and has travelled just 9,500km since. It has an asking price of A$385,000, which is a fair chunk more than what it cost brand new, but given its now iconic status, it represents amazing value.

Inspections, salespeople, activewear. Buying a home is not only a waste of a weekend but – pick the wrong place – and you could struggle the rest of your life.
A 2 million mortgage is not chump change.
However, speak to someone with a ~property portfolio~ and the way they talk it can start sounding like nothing. Worse: allow them to pressure you into buying before you’re ready (“rent money is dead money!”) that 2 million albatross could weigh you down the rest of your days.
Especially considering recent reports suggest investing in shares could be a better financial option than buying a house, you want to be savvy about when, where and why you purchase a property.
There are much better places to understand all that than here, however. What we’re here to talk about it today is one additional piece of advice every aspiring homeowner needs to hear (if not necessarily act on), on top of all that.
“Stop saving a big deposit, and stop looking in your local area.”
While you probably have a better understanding of the risks, environment and culture of your local area than other places (something the giver of the aforementioned advice arguably plays down), it’s also true that – if you live somewhere sought after – you probably can’t afford a property there.
Not easily at least.
Enter: Eddie Dilleeen, an ex housing commission resident who now owns 20 homes. Eddie recently spoke to News.com.au to give first home buyers a “brutal” reality check. Why? Because apparently, we have the wrong mindset.
“A 28-year-old with 20 homes, acquired while working as a bartender and fast food cashier, says first home buyers have the wrong approach.”
Eddie’s 20 properties are spread around Australia, six bought in the last year, and “all up his empire is worth about $5.5 million-$6 million,” News.com.au wrote.
“People think it isn’t possible (buying 20 properties) but it is. You have to stop saving a big deposit, and stop looking in your local area,” he told News.com.au.
Eddie reckons most inexperienced property buyers don’t capitalise on opportunities in the housing market because they only consider properties they wanted to live in, and only look close to where they live.
Most newbies also – Eddie says – cling to traditional methods of purchasing. Something he hopes you hearing his advice might change.
“You’re better off using a small deposit and paying lots of mortgage insurance so that you can get into the market quickly. It’s better than saving five years for a huge deposit because the growth in value will be faster than your ability to save,” he told News.com.au.
“Buying property should be about making money, not trying to save it.”
Further tips include:
- Buying in less popular areas, while continuing to rent where you want to live (“You can rent much better properties than you can buy. A Bondi rental could cost $700 a week, but will cost thousands a month to buy. If you rent, you can buy somewhere else and still get growth”)
- Checking out Brisbane for bargains (“It’s been held back since the global financial crisis so there are more opportunities for property to grow than in Sydney and Melbourne, which I think are plateauing”)
- Buy properties that rapidly grow in value
- Only purchase properties where the rent covers most, or all, of the mortgage costs
- Take emotion out of your purchasing
- Always buy existing properties that are undervalued, not new homes
- Make high rental returns a priority

We’re constantly being told that organic produce is best for us and that anything else we stuff in our faces may as well be considered trash. Yes, there is certainly some truth to this – the nutrient content will be greater, for example – but it’s not to say that the ‘trashy’ foods should be completely disregarded.
At least, that’s the opinion of Max Lugavere, an American nutritionist who regularly provides deeper insights into the foods we eat, while also revealing hacks that allow us to find beneficial foods on a budget. This time, he’s taken to Instagram to dispel the myths surrounding “lower quality” foods, and to let us know that there are in fact genuine alternatives to organic produce that still provide the nutritional content we need. For example, if you can’t get your hands on, or afford grass-fed beef, then you’re perfectly fine to buy grain-fed instead.
Why? Max says if you can still find yourself a lean cut of grain-fed beef, then “you can still enjoy the broad nutritional benefits, including its potent nutrient density.” A lean cut of meat is simply a piece of meat without the fat on it, and by trimming it away, you reduce your saturated fat intake and subsequently lower your cholesterol too.
View this post on Instagram
Max admits that grain-fed varieties will likely come with herbicides, so says you should wash them off. While a quick rinse under a tap should do the trick, he adds, “For an even more effective wash, consider soaking for 20 mins in diluted vinegar, salt, or baking soda, each of which has been shown to be even more effective at removing most of the residues from some of the more commonly used pesticides.”
It’s not just red meat he says you can make perfectly acceptable substitutes for either, as eggs, no matter where they come from, are “rich in vitamin B12, choline, and protein.” He also says that farmed fish, while nowhere near as good as fresh, is still better for you than a boxed ready meal. It still provides a great source of protein and essential fats such as omega 3.
So even though there will be plenty of people out there telling you to only eat sustainable foods – or better yet, give up animal products entirely – choosing non-organic produce can not only still provide a number of health benefits, but it will much less of a dent in your bank account too.

You rock up to the cafe five minutes early. The sun is shining. The coffee smells amazing. The waiter stops to chat. Your date arrives in a light summer dress. You hug awkwardly, but not too awkwardly. She shimmies into her seat. For a moment, you think all is well. Then you realise: aside from a pair of purple Crocs, you’re naked.
While the above situation is a ‘night before’ nightmare for the overthinkers of the world, the fact remains: choosing what to wear on a date is nerve-wracking, and can either make you more attractive to your date or immediately put them off.
So: get it right.
While a pair of black skinnies and a white tee is a timeless choice, it’s kind of boring (especially considering the hectic outfits kicking around at the moment). However, you also have to consider what you’re used to: if jeans and a tee are what you’re most comfortable in, it’ll show when you rock up in pink chinos and a baby blue polo.
To navigate this minefield judgemental coffee shop, we scoured the internet for advice. Much of it was, to put it frankly, bullshit. But we panned for gold, and believe we’ve found some gems that will help you look, “chill but hot.”
Here are the three most important things you need to do.
Make an effort
Perhaps the smartest advice we saw comes from Mensxp, who asked seven women “whether they liked men who are fashionable or chill.” The conclusion? Let’s just say, as they put it, “you should upgrade your closet.”
In other words: have a style, whether or not that style is deliberately unkempt or Leonardo DiCaprio in The Great Gatsby.
This is backed up by a study conducted by The Essential Man, who asked 101 women of all backgrounds, jobs, ages and locations what a man should wear on a first date.
Unsurprisingly, effort and the respect it signifies came up numero uno: “As a woman, I will make an effort to look nice and pretty for my date because I want to respect his company and effort for asking me out — and I would like the person to feel proud to be with me.”
“When a guy dresses like a teenage boy and it looks like he didn’t care at all, it is distracting and really kills the first impression.”
Examples of clothes or accessories that show you’ve made an effort include: a nice timepiece, a well-maintained pair of Chelsea boots, or a box-fresh pair of sneakers.
Be well-groomed (& well fitted)
Your Viking beard is more than welcome. But the stench of BO, whale blood and seven-day-old ale? Not so much. As one woman told Mensxp, “I have never found a man hot in an ill-fitting sweatshirt. I like men who take care of their looks.
“Wearing clothes that suit you and keeping yourself groomed is extremely sexy.”
This was reiterated by The Essential Man, who writes: “Ill-fitting clothes wrecks havoc on your attractiveness. It makes you look fatter, shorter, and sloppy rig esque. Wearing clothes that fit properly not only makes you look better, it allows you to look good even when you’re dressed in something as simple as a t-shirt and jeans.”
Especially important clothes to wear fitted include jeans, collared shirts, tees (if you can’t get one that fits right off the rack), leather jackets and denim jackets.
Dress to match your personality
“I find men who are smart really sexy. Being able to have long conversations with them about things is a big turn on. And if they dress the way they think, now that’s a deadly combo,” another woman told Mensxp.
Examples include glasses, baseball caps, bling (or lack thereof) and colours (or again, the lack thereof).
Your next date awaits.

Ever since going solo and releasing his own material, Harry Styles has also chosen to break away from the stereotypical boy band dress code and become a fashion icon in his own right. The Sign Of The Times singer is regularly spotted wearing some daring and head-turning outfits, such as the funeral-inspired outfit he wore to the MET Gala in 2019.
However, his latest red carpet look proves once again gender stereotypes are now made to be broken, as he was seen wearing a pair of schoolgirl shoes at the Brit Awards in London, England on February the 18th 2020. Officially called Mary Jane after the character ‘Mary Jane’ who first appeared in the Buster Brown comic strip, which itself first featured in The New York Herald in 1902, the singer’s footwear has traditionally been made for women. Young schoolgirls, in particular, have championed the shoe, although it appears Styles is now aiming to buck that trend – it’s believed he’s the first famous male face to rock the footwear.

His entire Brit Awards red carpet look was styled by Gucci creative director Alessandro Michele, who debuted the Mary Jane shoe during his men’s Fall 2020 show in Milan. He once again dressed Harry for his Brit Awards arrival, putting him in a chocolate brown double-breasted suit from the upcoming fall/winter 2020 collection, paired with a lavender sweater and light blue shirt with lace collar. Styles made the look something only he could really pull off by adding a pearl necklace and a multitude of rings.
It’s another bold look for the man from Worcestershire, England, although perhaps a little less daring than some of his previous outings. He did, however, make two more outfit changes at the Brit Awards, and headed to the official afterparty in a bright yellow Marc Jacobs three-piece suit, which is from the designer’s womenswear collection and has already been worn by Lady Gaga on the cover of Elle’s December 2019 issue.
With his latest album Fine Line releasing at the end of 2019, and a full tour planned for 2020, we won’t be surprised if we see Harry debut many more genderless outfits.

We all want Cristiano Ronaldo’s thighs. But reality is often a lot pudgier – whether or not we wear the right footwear to the gym. But let’s leave that to the side for a second, and focus on what we can control: mistakes.
Specifically, eliminating them.
Case in point: most men’s footwear game at the gym. To break it down let’s turn to The Training Manual, an online group of personal training specialists, who recently took to Instagram to inform us that sneakers are not necessarily optimal.
View this post on Instagram
“It’s common to see people performing a barbell squatting with running shoes on, yet that’s probably the worst shoe to wear for squats. When we squat, we want a stable foot and solid base to maximise force transfer,” The Training Manual began.
“A running shoe is designed to absorb the impact when your foot makes contact with the ground, so if you’re squatting in them is a bit like trying to squat whilst standing on a mattress.”
“A weightlifting shoe is perfect for squatting as it has a hard sole. They also allow you to stay a bit more upright and squat deeper due to the raised heel,” The Training Manual continued.
“When deadlifting, you want a hard sole to maxmise force transfer, but want to avoid a raised heel as this will increase your distance from the ground, meaning you have to move the weight further to lock out.”⠀
And with that, we’re off to buy some better gym shoes…

Zelira Therapeutics (ASX:ZLD) will launch the world’s first clinically validated medicinal cannabis product for insomnia later this year after a positive clinical trial result.
The company’s ZLT-101 formulation was tested in 23 patients with chronic insomnia. The drug met the primary endpoints of showing a statistically significant improvement in the Insomnia Severity Index (ISI) scores as well as safety and efficacy.
The ISI is not insomnia itself. It is a survey that assesses the severity of insomnia side-effects in patients formally diagnosed with insomnia. But it is the current gold standard to measure the efficacy of medicines to treat insomnia.
According to Professor Peter Eastwood, the principal investigator of the study, it was the most rigorous clinical trial ever undertaken to test cannabis as a treatment for insomnia.
“These results suggest ZLT-101 has potential as a novel treatment for insomnia,” he said.
Dr Richard Hopkins, managing director ex-US markets, dubbed the results “the best outcome you could imagine”.
“It’s a really important milestone, it cements our global leadership position in the field and delivers on our commitment to deliver clinically verified cannabis medicines,” he said.
“We’re well-positioned to launch the world’s first treatments into global markets in 2020.
“It validated the confidence we had and our commitment to getting them to the market.”
Dr Hopkins added that this data meant doctors could now be confident in prescribing medical cannabis.
“We [have] given physicians a reason to prescribe this compound — clinical evidence,” he said. “There are very few [cannabis] products that can do that today if any.”
The news pushed shares up 7 per cent this morning.

What now?
The company is now awaiting the final report on whether the trial met the secondary endpoints. This is due for release by the end of next month.
Dr Hopkins told Stockhead on this morning’s conference call the final report will include details such as the quality and length of sleep.
“That’s going to be powerful, they will allow us to understand how [ZLT-101] sits alongside existing therapies and address what they don’t do,” he said. “They’ll provide a lot of colour.”
When Zelira does launch these products in America, it said it would be entering a large market. There are 70 million insomnia patients in the US alone and they spend $US2bn ($3bn) on insomnia medications.
The company has two other trials underway — in opioid dependence reduction and autism. Others are planned to be launched in the coming months.
