Rami Malek Breaks The Oldest (& Stupidest) Style Rule In The Book
Rami Malek Breaks The Oldest (& Stupidest) Style Rule In The Book

When Oscar-winner (and Bond villain to be) Rami Malek stepped out with his partner, Lucy Boynton, in Venice, Italy overnight for the 76th Venice Film Festival, they knew the whole world would be watching.Ever cool, Rami kept things casual in an effort to beat the Italian heat, on a steamy first day of autumn – so far so Malek.

Come come, Mr Bond…
However, deciding that the age-old saying, ‘blue & green should never be seen’ was a thing of the past, Rami chose to pair a khaki green short-sleeve shirt with royal blue chinos and black monk strap dress shoes. This would have been a sartorially-fatal mistake, were it not for the rest of the saying: ‘without a colour between’. Rami did just that; adding a black leather belt to bend the hell of out of this outdated rule.Considering this was a MiuMiu event, we assume ‘The Rami’ was head to toe in Prada (if you’re looking for a more affordable solution to this smart-casual ensemble, we would recommend this shirt and these chinos).
Socks required, even in this heat.
In any case, your villain du jour appears to have gotten away with it this time – which leaves just one question: can those emulating his look do so without offending the world-at-large’s eyeballs?Only time (and belt sales) will tell.

Conor McGregor’s Latest Workout Reveals A Cardio Training Technique Everyone Should Be Using
Conor McGregor’s Latest Workout Reveals A Cardio Training Technique Everyone Should Be Using

We’d all like Conor McGregor’s multi-million dollar rig. But – as the face of the fight game’s latest workout reveals – we might be over-complicating things in our search to get it.Why? Well as the fitness world fawns over death ray treadmills, cryogenics and infrared saunas, Conor McGregor has taken things back to basics, posting a lung-busting workout to his Instagram story that will take your cardio to extreme levels. While you might be asking where this kind of preparation was when he ran out of steam against Mayweather, the fact remains that this 6-hour old insight into McGregor’s current workout routine is mightily useful to anyone who wants to challenge themselves without a gym.Starting off in some kind of ancient castle, McGregor begins by ambling down a narrow grey stairwell. He then sprints aggressively back up, showcasing a pair of white short shorts because, well, why the hell not?McGregor then gets closer, showcasing his trademark lack of stamina, and draws to a halt, huffing and puffing. He then leans against the cold stone wall, revealing how one of the simplest, cheapest workouts around: stair sprints, is still one of the most effective for testing your cardio.Of course, he then did a bit of shadow-kickboxing outside to finish it all off. This comes after McGregor’s reputation has taken a hit for punching an old man in a pub. Whether it’s quite enough to rebuild his public persona remains to be seen.Either way: it’s great motivation for anyone looking to increase their VO2 max, and an interesting suggestion that he may be keeping himself fit with the intention of stepping back in the ring. While McGregor has lived by the refrain “all publicity is good publicity” in the past, perhaps this time – to secure another shot at the Octagon, should he want one – the man they call The Notorious will have to keep his temper on the down low and channel his energy into preparation. As for who he would fight? Comments from UFC president Dana White, who said earlier this year, “He’s got the balls to fight at 170, but he doesn’t belong there,” suggests anyone from the welterweight division is unlikely. As Forbes put it: “[Conor’s] power likely won’t carry up at the same clip, and it’s quite possible he would have a bigger issue grappling and absorbing shots from 170-pounders.”So where does that leave him? Both Sportscasting and Forbes see a Khabib Nurmagomedov rematch as an option – but only if  Nurmagomedov beats Poirier in his upcoming fight in September, and only if McGregor organises a fight with (and beats) Tony Ferguson.According to Forbes, “There isn’t a more fair way to arrange the 155-pound title picture [than that].”If this doesn’t happen, another option for McGregor – currently ranked No. 3 in the lightweight division – is number 5 ranked Justin Gaethje.Whatever the case, Conor will want to ensure he picks the right opponent (and is adequately prepared for) what could be the fight that re-instates his legacy or sees it trickle away.As combat sports journalist Brian Mazique writes, “A loss could be crippling to his appeal and leverage moving forward. None of the men on this list are likely to wait around for him, so unless he does come back [soon], the list could be scrambled by the results for the rest of the year, and fighter availability.”In the meantime: stay tuned to the man’s Instagram and Twitter feeds, for further insights.

British Airways’ First Boeing 787-10 Tipped To Take Flight From January 2020
British Airways’ First Boeing 787-10 Tipped To Take Flight From January 2020

It’s been a long time coming but Pointy End passengers will finally see their demand for enhanced privacy and fresh-faced aircraft matched by British Airways as of next year.

Although British Airways are yet to respond to our request to confirm, sources indicate it could be as early as January.

Executive Traveller reported last week that the first 787-10 would “take wing” from January 2020, while Simple Flying reported that the 787-10 is due to be welcomed “sometime during 2020.”

Either way: it’s time for cashed-up introverts to break out the bubbly, because – whenever it happens – BA’s Pointy End offering is set to get better and more private.

The introduction of the new jets comes as British Airways rolls out its Club Suite business class, which will be a major drawcard on the spanking new Airbus A350s and Boeing 787s currently on order, and also on the airline’s 777s, 787s and Airbus A380s, most of which, Executive Traveller reports, are to be retrofitted with the Club Suites and a new first-class offering.

This is part of the international Race To The Top we reported on in March, wherein airlines compete to provide premium-ticket passengers with more of a retreat experience.

In this case, British Airways is competing primarily with Virgin Atlantic Airways to secure the London to New York route, one of the world’s most lucrative beats for corporate travel.

Besides being another inevitable part of competition, there are also suggestions that the Privacy Race has come about to cater for, what The Australian Financial Review calls, “the wonderfully illicit aspect of mid-week pointy-end travel for work: the sense that no one’s watching and you’re not on real time anyway.”

“Where else in today’s time-pressed world can you justify watching a two-hour Warren Buffett documentary, followed by the second season of The Handmaid’s Tale in your PJs while feasting on Peking duck and osso bucco with a side of edamame eggplant relish, accompanied by a bloody mary?”

Well, in British Airways new Club Suites, you won’t even need to justify it.

Keen? Each Club Suite boasts a lie-flat bed (a feature now standard after BA introduced it in the 1990s), a vanity unit and mirror, direct aisle access, a personal door, an 18 1/2-inch screen and 40 per cent more storage space than the previous model.

Also of note: the Boeing 787-10 Dreamliners are also tipped to include first class (something their Airbus A350-1000 jets don’t have) which – in a climate where the super-rich are increasingly opting for private jets and the wealth are increasingly opting for business class – is somewhat of a surprise.

High Class Escort ‘Samantha X’ Reveals The Secret To Getting Your Mojo Back After Divorce
High Class Escort ‘Samantha X’ Reveals The Secret To Getting Your Mojo Back After Divorce

It was all sunshine and sex – until it wasn’t. A few papers were signed and – boom – you’re a free agent.

Crazy, huh?

But that’s life. And – whether it was you or your partner who initiated the Get Out Of Jail motion – after all the emotion that went into building your relationship to the point of marriage (and however far beyond you got) it’s unlikely that you’ll breeze into the next chapter of your life without so much as a Ben & Jerry’s breakdown.

So far so normal.

You will, at some point, however, feel like engaging in some pleasures of the non-icecream variety. For that, we have Samantha X – Australia’s most renowned high-end escort – on hand to give you her top tips on getting your mojo back after divorce.

On what to do in the immediate aftermath

“If you’re anything like me, you will probably go on a bit of a shagging spree once you’ve been ‘released’ from your long term relationship,” Samantha told us.

“Suddenly all those hot men and women you used to droll over when locked and loaded in your relationship are now considered game – so go for your life.”

On finding something deeper

Top tip number one: “Do NOT fall in the love at first shag; just enjoy your new-found single life.” Top tip number two: remember that this “may soon become boring, and you will end up either wanting something deeper or wanting nothing to do with the opposite sex – which isn’t a bad idea.”

On first date nerves

“If you’re apprehensive about getting naked in front of someone new,” Samantha says, this can be remedied as follows: “treat yourself to new lingerie or new clothes, a wax, a work out and a haircut.”

Still stuck? Consider the following: “We all tend to let ourselves go in long term relationships, plus breakups are hardly great for the skin, so start up at the gym or yoga, get a dog or have a facial.”

On self love

“Start loving yourself again before you even think about channelling your energy and time on someone new,” Samantha told us. And, as for that ~displacement of linen~ you’ve been lusting after? Here’s what Samantha recommends…

“Sex wise: talk talk talk! You know those fantasies you had of shagging in the car but your husband/wife was always too chicken to do it? Now is your time! Want to go to an escort? Now is your time!”

On intimacy

“Funnily enough, my clients who are recently separated have the desire to feel wanted and to kiss again! It’s amazing how many couples stop kissing after a few years.”

I Drove The 2020 BMW X3 M Competition Without A Speed Limit & This Is What I Discovered
I Drove The 2020 BMW X3 M Competition Without A Speed Limit & This Is What I Discovered

Dusty. Windy. Hot. Endless flat Earth. Zero speed limit. It’s certainly one of the most exhilarating ways to welcome the 2020 BMW X3 M Competition onto Australian shores, but we couldn’t imagine a better solution to testing a practical German SUV re-calibrated to deliver maximum driving pleasure. And whilst practicality is still at the heart of this car, we’ll be the first to admit that you might forget about it once you mash that pedal in a self-induced slide. With Australia’s first ever M Town playing backdrop — a safe haven for motorsport enthusiasts to stretch their legs and test their car control ability — it was one of the most enticing ways to celebrate our final outing here at D’Marge.Retired rally ace Cody Crocker as our driving instructor? Check. 16.5km of track in the dusty clay pans of the Australian desert? Check. It was time to determine whether BMW’s latest flagship SUV is really worth the hype.

Quick Facts

Cost: AU$157,900Transmission: Eight-speed M Steptronic0-100kmh: 4.1 secondsTop Speed: 250km/h (285km/h with future M Driver’s Package)Engine: 3.0-litre straight-six twin turbo producing 375kW and 600NmFuel consumption: 10.6L/100km (WLTP average estimate)

1. It’s a tad ballistic for an SUV…and that’s why you’ll love it.

The spec sheet alone doesn’t do the X3 M Competition any justice. In a red dusty playground where your inner-racer does the talking, the car absolutely shines and you can feel exactly what it’s doing even going sideways at 80km/h.

2. No road? No worries.

It’s also very forgivable across sketchy terrain and reacts surprisingly well to rapid driver input thanks to added chassis subframe reinforcements. The car’s minimal lag throttle response is also helped by a twin turbo exhaust set up.

2. And that’s all thanks to this beast…

BMW M have tuned the 3.0-litre engine to deliver big power and torque all the way up to 7,200rpm. Utilising 90% new engine componentry also means that the SUV now behaves more like a race car with the push of a few buttons. One downside on our tested model was the absence of BMW M’s signature carbon strut, a beautiful optional extra that would have polished this engine bay off nicely.

3. How does 0 to 100km/h in 4.0 seconds sound?

Mash that pedal and you’ll soon be seeing triple digits quicker than you can say “isn’t this car meant to weigh two-tonnes?”

4. Big stopping power isn’t overlooked.

BMW haven’t forgotten about the basics in pursuit of numbers. The front brakes employ decent four pot callipers mated to large 395mm drilled rotors. In the dust the brakes clamp down strong with the help of ABS but loose clay means you’re still sliding past target stop points slightly. Nonetheless speed is washed off quickly and in the real world this should be a very capable setup when paired to the equally capable Continental Sportcontact 6 tyres.

5. It’s dirty on the outside, composed and classy on the inside.

In true BMW fashion the interior is finely executed with plenty of soft leather with contrast stitching, real carbon fibre accents and fancy tech including wireless phone charging and a new Head Up Display (HUD) navigation feature. There’s also personalised driver mode buttons on the steering wheel so switching between comfort and race is seamless.

6. Textures and details will make you feel a bit more special.

There’s M logos on the front headrests which illuminate and fancy hexagonal stitching in the mid supports to remind you this is no average X3.

7. New school bright and vibrant cluster arrangement is cool…

We’re personally still impartial to digital clusters — just think about what happens to your television screen after a decade of viewing. How much will it cost to replace? Who knows. Besides longevity and potential for dead pixels, the clarity and info delivery on this thing is second to none.

8. There’s a silky smooth Harmon Kardon sound system you’ll never use…

If it’s anything like the Harmon Kardon system we experienced in the new X7 then it’s very capable on long haul drives. In our X3 M experience we muted it in favour of the sound of the 3.0-litre twin turbo and sand spraying the side panels.

9. Room. So much room.

You’ll have no issues stuffing the kids or three  grown adults in the back. Cleaning out the red dust we can’t help you with.

10. Boot space isn’t compromised in the fastest X3 variant.

Ample boot space means practicality isn’t sacrificed in favour of speed and the car is still fully usable as a traditional SUV.

11. You’ll always know it’s an M car.

From touches out back…

12. To when the car first greets you…

With side sill insignia…

13. To when you’re driving it…

In the digital cluster tacho…

14. To the sound it makes out back.

A quad exhaust which looks as good as it sounds.

15. There’s even aero mirrors as found on all modern BMW M cars.

If you know, you know.

16. Latest Adaptive LED headlights will light the way for you home.

This is safety gear as standard in the X3 M Competition alongside six airbags, autonomous emergency braking and the latest in driver assistance programs designed to keep you safe in traffic.

17. The sunroof doesn’t compromise sporty handling.

A sunroof usually takes away rigidity from a car’s body and hence its handling dynamics. Tick the sunroof box on the X3 M and you won’t lose out thanks to the additional A-frame brace at the rear to counteract this.

18. Red dust and no speed limit is fun and all, but…

We didn’t get to test it on normal roads for compliancy amongst civilians. The car comes equipped with adaptive suspension for Comfort, Sport and Sport+ modes so this should alleviate some worries. There’s also a normal 4WD and Sport 4WD mode that sends more torque to the rear wheels for spirited drives. Those towing heavy loads will also appreciate BMW’s 3,500kg towing capacity as a factory option.

19. Performance and practicality in a tight little package.

If you’ve got a spare $160,000 to drop on a hot SUV then the X3 M Competition should be at the top of your list. It builds upon a very reputable ‘X’ platform which was first introduced in 2003 and has sold roughly 132,000 units since its debut. It’s safe to assume that German performance now comes with practicality. The hard part is convincing the better half.

Extreme Freediver Ant Williams Reveals The Secret To Staying Calm In Any Situation
Extreme Freediver Ant Williams Reveals The Secret To Staying Calm In Any Situation

Poise under pressure is one of the most valuable skills you can possess. Period. Doesn’t matter whether you’re a professional freediver, a caffeine-addled writer or a business executive with more meetings than pocket squares: the ability to remain unflappable in the life’s clutch moments will ultimately determine your career (and social) success.

So, what’s the secret? Well, there’s no quick fix. But by implementing the following advice from Ant Williams, current Guinness World Record holder for the deepest free dive under ice (70m, if you’re interested), you can increase your chances (and skills) substantially.

Who knows: that pay rise could be just around the corner.

Speaking to D’Marge exclusively, Ant recently opened up about the physical and mental pressure involved with making a living at the extreme end of an extreme sport – and explaining how he uses the same skills to deal with challenging situations back on land.

On preparation

According to Ant, whether you’re in the water or the boardroom, build-up is crucial, as it helps you find the confidence to push through those inevitable moments of doubt.

“When I leave the surface, I know 100% I’m going to the bottom and back. But when you get to 10 metres deep that pressure on your chest can trick you into thinking you haven’t taken a big enough breath.”

“I kind of quickly dismiss that; I know I packed tons of air in. But when you’re starting to freedive you always get things that freak you out; it’s how you deal with them in the moment that’s the real challenge,” he continued.

On ‘clutch’ moments

“I see a massive correlation between [these freakouts when] freediving and staying calm on land,” Ant told us. “And the biggest thing is what I call self-leadership – the ability to stay calm under pressure; to trust that no matter what happens you’ve got the ability to deal with whatever comes up – and the confidence to back yourself and the preparation you’ve done.”

“It’s going to be really hard and scary, but that’s why you did the training.”

Most importantly: “It might look extreme or abstract but it’s a really important life lesson – how to manage yourself through moments of performance where things aren’t going your way; magnificent for teaching you how to stay calm under pressure.”

On leadership

“In leadership scenarios,” Ant told us, “If you’re massively under the pump and something’s gone wrong, as a leader you can get upset and emotional but it’s not going to help the group.”

“Even in family life, if you’ve had a challenging event, [using these techniques] can help you stay grounded and emotionally connected – but also confident in your ability to manage the situation.”

A personal example of this, Ant tells us, is when he went big wave surfing – a sport he’s not comfortable with – to a spot that “really frightens” him.

“I had a situation last winter where I went to quite a remote spot with a friend– one where it doesn’t really start breaking until it gets to about 8 feet – and it was 14 foot, which is way bigger than anything I’d ever surfed,” he told us.

“We had to climb down a steep muddy bank, jump off a rock shelf and paddle through the death zone to get out to the break. Then sets would come that are bigger than 14 feet,” he added.

“I remember a set came through that cleaned us both up. This pulled on those [freediving] abilities to stay super calm and deal with the unknown.”

Biggest takeaway

If you have a stressful situation coming up, train for it with the meticulousness of a freediver. Then, once the day hits: stay in the moment, trust your preparation and remind yourself – at least you’re not 70 metres underwater.

Matt Moran – Talks food, toys and life
Matt Moran – Talks food, toys and life

Last month we caught up with Sydneysider restaurateur, chef and author, Matt Moran. Keen to know more about his busy life and travels we recruited him as this month’s D’Marge Man About Town and Guest Editor. Matt talks to us about motorcycles, his style and food.

When we saw you last you had just stepped off a plane, wearing all black, some cool Jimmy Choo sneakers and a fresh Rolex. Would you say you’re an active participant in men’s fashion?
I have an appreciation for it absolutely, but I’m not really one to follow trends. I just know what I like and what I’m into. I’ve always been like that.

Do you have any rules when it comes your style, sneakers and watches?
Not really, but the one thing I’d say is that because I’m so busy and my lifestyle is quite hectic, I like to be comfortable! And certain brands just get the right blend of style and comfort.

What about boy’s toys. We know you have an interest in motorcycles. What’s is it about motorcycles that you love?
I’ve loved them for as long as I can remember! I grew up on a farm so I started riding dirt bikes as a kid and my passion just grew from there. It’s just the most exhilarating, freeing feeling – nothing compares.

What bikes do you currently own?
I love a Ducati – I’ve owned more than ten over the years, but at the moment I have a 2015 Diavel Carbon Red and a Ducati 1199 Panigale S Tricolore. I also own a Harley Davidson.

Recently we had the pleasure of sitting in the private kitchen space at Aria in Sydney, can you tell us a little more about why you put a dining area in the middle of the kitchen?
People have a real curiosity about food and it’s great to see. They’re becoming increasingly interested in what they eat, where it’s come from, how sustainable it is and when in a restaurant, how it’s cooked. It was seeing this interest that led to our decision to open a kitchen table with an unobstructed view of the kitchen.

I’m no culinary expert, but what are some ways that our readers can develop and learn to love food and cooking?
The Australian food industry has grown incredibly from when I first started cooking – everything’s more accessible now. They can read food publications and watch television shows about quality produce and cooking but most importantly, I think the farmers markets are a great place to start. Actually speaking to the people that grow your food and buying it from them first-hand is not only inspiring, the ingredients are fresher and just taste better!

We often recommend our readers try cooking something for their dates. What are some simple dishes that even novices can whip up to impress a special someone?
The main thing is the think of dishes where you can do most of it beforehand and not have to spend a lot of time in the kitchen on the night – start with something like oysters, a roast and then a tart you can make prior so you just need to put it in the oven.

Matt, you’re what we call a man’s man here at D’Marge. In your opinion, what does it take to be a well respected bloke amongst your peers and the public?
I think just being a decent guy and having integrity in what you do. Integrity goes a long way.

How do you get away from all the hype and buzz around TV, work and restaurants? Where’s your escape?
I love my home and obviously enjoy spending time there with the family. I also have a farm I love to visit when I can.

What are some of your don’t leave home without travel essentials?
My phone charger! I’d be lost without it! I also like a good set of headphones.

Who’s the most interesting person you’ve ever met (and why?)
That’s a tough one to answer! My work brings me into contact with all sorts of people from all types of backgrounds and there are so many that have inspired me along the way – it’s hard to single just one out!

Sound advice for the aspiring young men reading this article?
Work hard and live your life well. Know what you want and go for it.
