Grim Photo Proves Sydney City Council Really Wants You To Workout At Home
Grim Photo Proves Sydney City Council Really Wants You To Workout At Home

Although personal training groups of less than 10 people are still permitted to operate outside, a photo obtained this morning by DMARGE suggests the government doesn’t want them (or anyone) using the outdoor workout equipment.The photo, taken this morning at Rushcutters Bay Park, an outdoor haven nestled between Kings Cross and Double Bay, shows a bodyweight exercise area all fenced off.A no brainer, given Coronavirus’ ability to survive on steel for a long period of time and the increasing cases reported in Sydney over the last week.There’s no point social distancing if you’re all doing sit-ups in each other’s sweat.Though some other exercise areas, in other parks (like the Jonas Bradley Park) remain open – as seen by, among others, the Instagram story of tech commentator Geoff Quattromani – we doubt they will stay open for long (and there doesn’t appear to be many using them).

Until all this blows over, DMARGE recommends these exercises for a top-quality home isolation workout, or reading this piece on how to trick your body into wanting to work out if you’re of the less enthusiastic disposition.

Even though you won’t be venturing outdoors as much as you might normally would – due to the restrictive lockdown measures put in place by governments to help reduce the spread of the COVID-19 coronavirus – that doesn’t mean you shouldn’t take the time to update your wardrobe.After all, you can still make the odd trip to the shops, and you might occasionally find yourself needing to have a video conference with your colleagues, so it’s still important to look the part. It’s with this in mind that Aether has chosen the perfect time to throw a site-wide sale, giving you a 25 percent discount off absolutely everything (except third-party products), with the code STAYATHOME. Not just a discount code, but words of wisdom right now, too.Aether was founded in 2009 by two former movie producers, with the ambition of producing clothing that looks right at home in the city, but is tough enough to withstand the greater outdoors. Based out of Los Angeles, the company has since expanded to New York City, San Francisco and Aspen, but can ship its clothing to international countries, too. If you can, we fully recommend you take a visit to one of their stores, because even from a purely architectural and design perspective, they’re incredible (the San Fran store for example is made from three shipping containers).Providing everything from t-shirts to pants, to jackets and sweaters, you’re sure to find something suitably stylish and durable to fill a void in your wardrobe (or replace some lesser quality items you already own). Simply follow the link below, add some items to your shopping cart, and enter the code STAYATHOME to receive the discount. But be quick, this deal only lasts until the end of the week.Shop The Aether Sale

Qantas’ Latest Announcement For Customers Looking To Cancel Flights
Qantas’ Latest Announcement For Customers Looking To Cancel Flights

Last week Qantas announced a generous one-year status extension for frequent flyers and a flight cancellation policy that meant you could ice your trip in exchange for travel credit (if you had booked within certain dates). From today that flight credit policy has been extended to include anyone with a ticket for travel before the 31st July.“From today, anyone holding a Qantas ticket for travel before 31 July 2020 can get a flight credit and retain the full value of their booking. You need to do this by 30 April 2020. The flight credit is valid for booking and travel by 31 December 2021. This gives you more than 18 months to plan, rebook and travel,” Qantas told customers in an email.

“This is a challenging time for everyone as we all navigate our way through the Coronavirus crisis.”

“At Qantas, we’re aware that travel plans are just one part of people’s lives that have been significantly disrupted. We want to provide you with as much flexibility as possible so that you can have the confidence to travel with us, when the time is right for you,” Qantas wrote to passengers.“If you already have a Qantas flight credit issued on or after 31 January 2020, this will also be automatically extended but may take a few weeks to update in our system,” the flagship Australian airline added.“No change fees apply when rebooking but please note that the flight credit can only be used towards a fare of equal or higher value than the original fare you purchased.”Also important to note, is that if you booked through a travel agent or third-party website, you must contact those companies directly to make changes to your booking.This flight credit policy extension comes in a context of lounge closures and route changes, both changes the result of the temporary shutting down of the travel industry.“As a result of new government restrictions announced this week, all Qantas domestic and international lounges are closed until further notice. Our team will be contacting all paid Qantas Club members next week with information about extensions of these memberships,” Qantas announced in its email this morning.

Breitling Relaunches One Of Its Most Iconic Models
Breitling Relaunches One Of Its Most Iconic Models

It’s always exciting when a watch manufacturer decides to resurrect an old design, but today’s announcement from Breitling has us smiling with particularly great intent.That’s because the Swiss watch maker has brought back the Top Time, a model first launched in the 1960s, aimed primarily at younger men. This was largely due to its more affordable price tag compared to some of Breitling’s other models, such as the Navitimer and Chronomat. Willy Breitling added that the timepiece was “particularly suited to the needs of the young and active professionals.”This new model is aimed at that same demographic, and fans will likely remember the Top Time for featuring in the 1965 James Bond movie Thunderball, with Sean Connery donning the iconic model and getting the added benefit of a Geiger counter. Unfortunately, this new model doesn’t have the same feature.This updated model comes bearing an instantly recognisable feature: the Zorro dial. This dial design was more commonly found on the Sprint, while the Top Time was usually found with a panda, or reverse panda dial (white dial with two black sub-dials or vice-versa). Breitling says the Zorro dial (a term coined by collectors to refer to the fictional character’s eye-mask), gives the Top Time a “playful” look, but adds that it “doesn’t disguise the superb chronograph performance.”Breitling has given the modern-day remake a 41mm stainless-steel case, a serious increase on the original’s 35mm diameter (the original was also available with a gold-plated case, but it’s just steel for this new version), while other new features include red hands, and a decimal scale can be found in place of the original’s tachymeter.Powering the watch is Breitling’s self-winding Calibre 23 chronograph movement, which has a power reserve of around 48 hours, and runs two sub-dials: a second counter, and a 30-minute counter. It’s not an in-house movement, but is actually an ETA 7753. The case is attached to a brown nubuck leather strap, and on the reverse of the case, you’ll find an engraving displaying “[X] OF 2000”, signifying the Top Time’s exclusivity.The new Breitling Top Time is available now direct from the company’s e-commerce channels for AU$6,950/US4,990, but will eventually make its way to the company’s global retail network at a later date. This will also be the first Breitling watch to be offered with a blockchain-based digital passport, which contains authenticity and ownership information in a digital file, that can be accessed at any time.

Weird Habits We’re Developing Thanks To Social Distancing
Weird Habits We’re Developing Thanks To Social Distancing

As we grasp the full seriousness of Coronavirus, government jackboots have come down the world over. Depending on where you live this could mean anything from a total lockdown (Spain, Italy, etc.) to not being able to get a 31-minute haircut (Australia).

We are all, however, developing nervous ticks, due to the mental pressure that comes with being forced to work from home with your unruly family or unemployed spouse (or, for those that live alone, your bland and empty apartment).

Not sure what we mean? Let’s put it this way: you probably weren’t holding your breath when someone passed close by you in a supermarket aisle a couple of months back. With us? Cool. Now, while you might not do all of these, if you don’t do any we’ll find that hard to believe.

These are the weird habits we’re collectively developing due to Coronavirus, courtesy of the good people of Twitter.

Holding your breath every time someone walks by

Either that or timing your breathing to exhale rather than inhale as they walk past. Or, you know, just giving people a wide berth – for both your sakes.

Treating quarantine like an airport

Trackpants? Check. Drinking at 10 in the morning? No judgement.

Working out at strange hours

That or thanking your lucky stars for your zombie apocalypse survival kit. Oh, and people tend to go one of two ways during self-isolation. You either treat it like a stint in prison and come out ripped, or you can’t motivate yourself to work out for longer than two minutes and make a long-awaited transition into a slug.

Going to the virtual pub

Picking up hobbies that have no tangible use

When was the last time you made a paper plane?

Virtual orgies

Desperate times call for desperate measures.

Falling in and out of love with classical music

Australian Man’s Haircut Exposes The Problem With The Government’s ’30 Minute Rule’
Australian Man’s Haircut Exposes The Problem With The Government’s ’30 Minute Rule’

Even when there’s a global pandemic, we’re going to want to look our best. Sure, we’re going to be venturing outside an awful lot less, but with video conferencing and weekly virtual pub nights, it’s not as though we have licence to revert to cavemen.To make sure we don’t end up looking something like Tom Hanks in Castaway, us guys will still need regular haircuts. But when we’re told to stay inside and only head out for “essential” needs, does that include a trip to the barbers?For now, hairdressers and barbershops have been deemed safe to remain open in Australia, although there are restrictions in place, such as having only one person per 4 metre squared of floor space. The Australian government initially implemented a 30-minute-only appointment rule, but that has quickly been scrapped.Some barbershops, such as Tooth & Nail in Marrickville in Sydney’s Inner West and Tidory’s Barber Shop in the Eastern Suburbs, have decided to shut their doors, while others have made the effort to tell their customers about the restrictive measures they’re now legally required to put in place.The Emporium Barber, which has four stores in Queensland and one in Bondi, NSW, has posted on its site the number of people allowed in each shop at any one time – they’re limited to 15 in Bondi, including staff – but reassures customers that they’re abiding by the government’s guidelines when it comes to cleanliness. Plus, they’re still allowed to serve alcohol!We spoke to Trent Pridmore, Founder & CEO of The Emporium Barber, to find out what measures they’re putting in place and how they’re adapting to the ever-changing rules.“Obviously we’re quite a bit quieter at the moment in comparison to normal. Our stores are in areas where there are large multinational commercial tenants, the majority of which have instructed their staff to work from home”, he begins.“Our hygiene standards have always been extremely high but we’ve certainly stepped it up again since all this has started.”“All staff are washing hands before and after client interaction, equipment is sanitised between each client with hospital-grade disinfectant, fresh towels and capes for all clients are sanitised and the entire store gets several cleans each day.”“I would 100% say that it would be safer at the moment for one of our clients to come into the stores than having someone come into their house. ”

“It would be harder to disinfect your equipment/tools if people are mobile.  How can you guarantee a house is cleaner than one of our stores?”

Fortunately for guys, a style or crew cut shouldn’t take long, but the idea of sitting in a chair that somebody else has occupied moments before, or being manhandled by a stylist who would have seen countless people come and go, can be more daunting than usual.It’s therefore perhaps no surprise to learn that some gents are turning to cutting their own hair at home (or occasionally with the help of a partner)  – and gay guys are “crisis-bleaching” their hair peroxide blonde. A lot of guys resorting to such drastic measures are posting videos of the process and results to online video sharing platform, TikTok, with the #quarantinecut, #quarantinecutchallenge and #selfcutchallenge hashtags all trending.“If guys are going to do their own hair, I wouldn’t think that anything other than clipper cuts or buzz cuts are going to be happening.  Anything else would be just too hard.  Just grab yourself a decent pair of clippers, use the guards as a guide for length, start of longer as once you’ve cut it off you can’t put it back,” Trent tells us.One such video, posted by Eli Clarke exemplifies just how different Australian haircuts are compared to the rest of the world, with the man in the video resorting to placing a bowl over his head to give himself a classic bowl cut. We think the results speak for themselves.

@_eliclarke

Another user, @claudia.mitchel8, has posted a video of her brother Lucas getting an at-home mullet trim. The mullet is a hairstyle championed by Aussies (there’s even a festival dedicated to it) and the comments section on the video appears to favour the look.

@claudia.mitchel8

It’s not just Australians getting in on the act, as barber shops around the world are closed. One user in America, @therealslimpaigey1, decided his barnet looked good after shaving just one whole side off. Fortunately, he didn’t leave it that way, as a later video proves he shaved the rest off too.

@therealslimpaigey1

Of course, you could play it safe, such as @bernardcastrillon, who decided to shave all his hair off in one clean sweep for a simple buzzcut.

@bernardocastrillon= Quarantine day 12

Or as we mentioned earlier, you could resort to simply dyeing your hair a different colour. This is your chance to get creative!

@himbeauWhen you’re gay and you’re legally required to bleach your hair every time there’s a crisis situation

Whether or not you brave the outside and head to a barber or salon is entirely up to you. But with a wide range of haircutting equipment available for you to use at home – not to mention the time for your hair to grow back should anything go wrong, we’re all for the quarantine cut.But if you want it done by the professionals, Trent signs off by saying, “I think the best thing to do would be to come in now, don’t wait to be told we have to shut. Get a tidy up, maybe ask for it to be a bit shorter to last a bit longer than normal in case.”

Qantas’ Smart Solution To Singapore Stopover Shutdown
Qantas’ Smart Solution To Singapore Stopover Shutdown

The travel industry is (temporarily) screwed. But not all airports are shutting at the same rate. This means awkward times where some flights are able to leave but not stopover.Qantas has a creative solution. Instead of cancelling flights between March the 24th (the date Singapore Changi Airport shut its doors to transiting passenger) and March the 27th (the day of Qantas’ last scheduled Sydney – Singapore – London flight), they have found a way out of the jam.As reported by CNN Travel, “By a strange twist of fate, Qantas will – for a matter of days – be running the first-ever A380 passenger flight between Australia and London.”CNN Travel reports this “switcheroo on the kangaroo” came about as Qantas flagship QF1 “Kangaroo Route” from Sydney to London via Singapore still had a few days flights to run when Singapore Changi Airport decided to ban transiting.“So, in a switcheroo on the Kangaroo Route, Qantas will now be doing a 90-minute fuel stop at Darwin in Australia’s Northern Territory instead, before flying the 16-plus hours on to London,” CNN Travel wrote.

“It’s the first time that Darwin and London will be linked by a direct service – but not the first time Darwin’s been a stop on this prestigious route.”

Funnily enough, this is a trip down memory lane, as Darwin was a stop on the original Kangaroo Route in the 1930s, which took 10 stops and 37 days – not so much a red-eye as a red month (and even then only the rich and famous could afford it).Why Darwin, you might ask? Surely there’s more to it than nostalgia. You’d be right: Darwin is on the most direct path from Sydney to London, making it better positioned for the quick stopover than any other Aussie city, before the 17-hour flight onwards to London.“Qantas’ last fight on the returning QF2 flight from London to Sydney via Darwin will take off March 27, landing the next day,” CNN Travel reports. The Asia-Pacific travel focussed website then added that, due to this month’s changes, Qantas is having to say a premature adieu to the superjumbo.“Qantas is grounding all 150 of its planes until at least the end of May, including their 12 A380s. However, with Airbus ceasing production of the superjumbo by 2021, and airlines already retiring those in their fleet, it could well be the last chance for passengers to ride in one of Qantas’ red-tailed A380s,” CNN Travel wrote, crediting aviation website One Mile At A Time with noting the insight.

Lockdown Etiquette Rules You Need To Adopt, According To A Couples Counsellor
Lockdown Etiquette Rules You Need To Adopt, According To A Couples Counsellor

They say absence makes the heart grow fonder. So what happens when you and your partner are imprisoned in your home together, with no clear of when you’ll be able to head back out into the wider world and resurrect your regular routines?The quarantine period we’re all going through right now has the potential to put a strain on some relationships, as we’re forced to spend virtually every waking minute with one another, and get to experience first hand what the other one does when boredom inevitably sets in.We reached out to Heidi Gee, a relationship and sex therapist based in Sydney’s Neutral Bay, to find out what couples can do to make the quarantine period as stress-free as possible and how to avoid any major arguments.

We first asked Heidi if she had a set of ‘go-to’ rules, not just for couples in quarantine, but for couples who live together and spend most of their day around each other, too. However, with regards to couples who both need to work from home during lockdown, she recommends, “if the place is big enough, you should definitely work in separate rooms.”“If not, then it’s best to stick to a routine and respect each other’s ‘work space’. Get up early as if you were actually going to work, get dressed, have breaks and set work times.”“The sudden change and not having the space you might usually have from your partner can cause stress and tension in the relationship.”

”I think it’s important to talk to your partner about setting up a routine, talk about how and what you need to work effectively without getting in each others’ way.”

“The change can be hard initially but in these uncertain times, it’s important to be supportive and accommodate each other.”Heidi adds that you should still try and find ways to find your own space during the quarantine period. Not just for the relationship, but for your own piece of mind, too.“Make sure you go outside for fresh air (within govt. restrictions, obviously), read, meditate, listen to podcasts and set boundaries/ground rules together that work for each of you.”

“It’s important to be flexible and to compromise.”

Couples who live together will likely already be aware that things such as the TV can cause arguments, with one person choosing to watch something the other isn’t interested in. During the lockdown, this could be amplified.With regards to these situations, Heidi says, “If you watch different shows, then maybe you need to compromise and perhaps record one show and come to an agreement. It’s so important to communicate effectively and be supportive. We don’t know how long the isolation period will last so this will be a test on relationships.”She reiterates how important it is to have your own space.“Take a break or a time-out. Go to a different room, or do a different activity such as reading a book, yoga in the lounge, writing in a journal, or gardening.”

“It might be hard but it’s important you try and have a bit of space otherwise you risk getting annoyed at each other.”

“It’s hard when you’re so used to having space and suddenly you’re working from home together and you’re with each other all day, and not sure how long the isolation will last.”But thinking more positively, Heidi says the isolation period can also be a chance to reconnect with your partner.“It’s a good time to do couple things, such as playing board games or video games, completing puzzles. We get so caught up in life we barely have time to slow down.

“A lot of couples talk about how they don’t have time for date nights, why not make the most of the isolation period and have them on a regular basis?”

Finally, Heidi adds, “Dating isn’t just about dating anymore. You are picking your potential apocalypse partner. Choose wisely folks”. How appropriate.We can all agree we’re going to need to get inventive over the next few weeks and months, but with Heidi’s advice, we’re sure you’ll be able to come out on the other side a much stronger couple.Just as long as you haven’t killed each other.
