The days of bulky and boring white spacesuits could be over if SpaceX has its way with orbital apparel.
The American company backed by Elon Musk recently recruited one of Hollywood’s legendary costume designers, Jose Fernandez, to pen their in-house spacesuits ahead of its human space exploration program.
Who the hell is Jose Fernandez, might you ask? He’s the guy who brought cinematic costumes such as the ones in Batman v Superman, Oblivion, Tron: Legacy, The Avengers, Iron Man and Jupiter Ascending to life. More importantly, he knows how to make a functional suit look damn cool.
Musk himself is no stranger to outlandish statements (see: bioweapon filters) and he has in the past claimed that he wants future astronauts to look “badass”.
“Our spacesuit design is finally coming together and will also be unveiled later this year. We are putting a lot of effort into design aesthetics, not just utility. It needs to both look like a 21st century spacesuit and work well,” Musk added.

How one scores such a stellar job is usually a bit more complex than hitting up the local classifieds. Fernandez explained in an interview that SpaceX had approached him to design a suit alongside other companies and was given a very tight deadline of two weeks.
“They had two weeks to present the suit to him and I told them I couldn’t do a full suit in two weeks but that I may be able to do a helmet. There were four other companies working on bids as well and at the end of the process, he hated everything except the helmet. I worked with him for six months and at the end of that, we created a suit that they are now reverse-engineering to make functional for flight.”
If the final design by Fernandez goes ahead, every boy and man-child’s space dream could come true. With SpaceX adamant about remaining a separate entity from NASA operations, it was only fitting that they’d need their own suits with the arrival of human-lead missions.
For now the much-hyped suit is completely under wraps as it heads for its debut a few months down the track. Given that it’ll be reverse engineered from Fernandez’s own design, we’re confident that it’ll look a lot better than the Apollo suit from the 60s.

Say hello to my little friend, the mansion used in the filming of the 1983 Al Pacino film ‘Scarface’, which is now on the market and on sale for a cool $17.9 million.
‘Scarface’ was actually set in Miami but the mansion used for filming is located in Santa Barbara. ‘El Fureidis’ (which literally translates to ‘Tropical Paradise’) was built in 1906 by acclaimed architect Bertram Goodhue and features elaborate pools, high ceilings, fountains, fireplaces, courtyards, hidden patios, gold-lead detailing, a museum-quality painted ceiling in the dining room, outdoor gardens full of statues, palm trees and colonnades and nearly 10,000 square feet on more than 10 acres.
The property was actually listed a year ago but its original $35 million price tag didn’t attract the right buyer, so it’s now on sale at a half-price steal of $17.9 million. Start saving, kids.

Think you may have burned a few bridges over the weekend with some less than flattering drunken behaviour? Well, a new study has found you probably didn’t have that many friendships to begin with. We apologies in advance for these gloomy Monday morning statistics.
Researchers from Tel Aviv University surveyed students in the U.S., Europe, and Israel about their friendships with one another and found that only 50% of the people they called their friends considered them their friends as well.
To make matters worse, researchers tracked people’s physical activity after learning about their friends’ exercise habits. It turned out that if a “friend” didn’t consider someone a friend in return, they were less likely to influence that person’s physical activity. So if you’ve been blowing off your mates bone-breaking morning bootcamp offer, you’ve been found out.
It’s not all bad news, though. The authors of the study discovered two major signs that someone is a true friend. First, if you and a friend have plenty of mutual friends, the chances that your relationship is reciprocal are far higher. Second, if someone has considerably more friends than you, they’re less likely to consider you a friend. Ouch.
Make time for the good ones.

It maybe true that your twenties are the best years of your life (if you can remember half of it), but the following decade is also a milestone that shouldn’t be feared. These are the eight reasons every man will love being in their thirties.
#1 You’ve Developed Crazy-Awesome Radar
Years of toiling in the trenches of social ineptitude has taught you well. Think that hottie in the corner with the suspect powdered nose attempting dog face Snapchats for the past twenty minutes is the one to take home to mother? Think again. In your twenties you would have chased that tail until the cows came home. Today, you’re like the Terminator scanning for a matching outfit with just one mission – sound procreation.
#2 You Have A PhD In Booze
Your days in tertiary education has opened your world to a many life lessons. Who are we kidding. You’ve literally drunk yourself silly to a point where you can tell what alcohol you had the night before just from the smell/colour of the vomit on your shirt. Combined with the fact that you were once a lowly paid minion, it’s likely that you also took any form of alcohol that was offered to you, including the obscure ones your mates could never finish. Today you’ve pretty much tasted every hardcore concoction under the sun and have a growing taste for the good stuff – wine and whiskey. Also, ‘shots!’ is likely something you’ll never hear again.
#3 Kicking On Or Staying Home Is No Debate
The novelty of going hard every Friday and Saturday night dies down drastically in your thirties. The only warehouse parties you’ll be attending are the ones that come with 50% off pots and pans. That’s not to say you won’t treat yourself to a good old shimmy every now and then, but more likely than not it’s the rowdy variety with friends as opposed to ‘I’m here to fuck shit up and get arrested’ kind.
#4 Letting Yourself Go Is A Conscious Decision
Whoever penned the term ‘Dad Bod’ is an asshole. It perpetuates the fact that once you’re over thirty and primed for fatherhood, your health and appearance will be compromised to provide for your family. This maybe a reality for many, but the real truth lies in the question staring right at you as you enter your thirties – you have the choice to let yourself go and now is the time to pick a side. Be one with the fatherly exploits of the Ryans – Gosling and Reynolds. Get arms as big as a kid’s torso.

#5 You Choose Friends Over Acquaintances
Unless you’re going on Tinder dates, your 30-year-old self really couldn’t give two beans about schmoozing with random friends of friends whom you met the week before at the John Mayer gig. Even if they were damn cool hippies. Your thirties is all about distinguishing your life long friends from your happy hour acquaintances. You may have 500 Facebook friends, but there are only five that you’d wingman for life. And you’ll never leave those wingmen.
#6 You Fear No FOMO
Leading on from five, you’re now more comfortable in your own skin and amongst that of your closest buddies. As a twenty-something muppet you may have felt inclined to be at the wildest parties or events every week where the cool kids hang, but in your thirties the Fear Of Missing Out is no longer in your immediate conscience as you only do things for yourself. Missed Stereosonic? No biggie – did that five years in a row before all that disgraceful muzzing business.
#7 Greying, Balding Or Both
Statistics have shown that men will start to go grey in their thirties. The same goes for your beard. Balding is a bit more of a genetic lucky dip. There’s no fighting both unfortunately except for endless bouts of Rogaine and hair dye. Well we say embrace it. Wear it like you own it as hiding it will make you appear less confident. Need living proof of a badass bald guy with a model wife? Two words: Jason Statham.
#8 Getting Laid Is Easier
Your embarrassing American Pie days will hopefully have been a distant memory by now and rather than forgetting the unfortunate sexcapades, you’ve accepted and learnt. Hopefully, you’re a bit more experienced too. More importantly though you’re now that mature, confident, financially stable and intelligent guy that girls in their twenties want to be with. You’re also young enough to satisfy and settle down with a woman in her 30s if that’s your kind of thing. We call this decade the sweet spot which isn’t so hard to find.

Forget the Four Seasons. If you want a stay that’s guaranteed to be like nowhere else, Airbnb is the ultimate answer. Not only is it a low-key (and often economical) way to travel, the service also boasts some of the most unusual accommodations you’re likely to see.
Along with the usual urban apartments, Airbnb offers a variety of insane-but-spectacular lodgings. Your next trip to Brazil could include Cabana Floripa, a patchwork home built with materials from the garbage of the area. A holiday in Mexico could take you to The Seashell House, an outlandish home fit for Poseidon himself. Or maybe you’d prefer to shack up in a sophisticated treehouse.

We’ve shown you quick tips for getting Windows, OS X and Android running that little bit faster, and now it’s time to tackle the iPhone. If your iPhone is showing signs of sluggishness, here are a couple of quick fixes to put a spring back in its step. These tricks are fast, free and easy to do.
Clear Out Unused Apps & Files
As on every other platform and device, the more apps and files you have cluttering up storage space, the harder the OS has to work. Keep the number of local apps and files down to a minimum, and you’ll quickly see speed improvements. Just make sure if you’re deleting important files (like photos) from your iPhone that you have them safely backed up somewhere else first.
With more vacant internal storage space to work with and fewer apps to look after, you should see snappier performance and improvements in battery life too. In some apps, such as Safari, you can clear out cached data without uninstalling the entire app (in the case of the iOS web browser go to Safari in Settings to find the relevant option).
Turn Off Background Refreshing
Cut Down On Animations & Visual Effects
If your older iPhone is struggling to run the latest and greatest version of iOS, then you can turn off some of the visual flourishes in the operating system to get back some speed on your ageing handset.
From the Settings app, open up the General page, then choose Accessibility: tap Increase Contrast and then toggle the Reduce Transparency slider to the on position.
Go back to the previous screen, tap Reduce Motion and then toggle the slider you find there to the on position as well. When you exit Settings you won’t have the fluid animations and subtle transparency effects in iOS any more, but you might find your phone feels a little faster. On the newest iPhones it’s less likely to have any impact.
The Last Resort: A Factory Reset
As on Android, the best way of blowing the digital cobwebs off iOS is to simply wipe everything and start again from the beginning. You may associate factory resets with troubleshooting stubborn problems, but if all your data and files are safely stored in the cloud, then there’s no reason why you can’t run a restore every now and again.
Obviously, back up everything before you get started, via iTunes or iCloud or any other service of your choosing. The erase option is available under Reset in the General page of Settings, and when it’s finished you can restore your backup. Alternatively, set it up as a new iPhone and sign in with your iCloud credentials to restore your apps one by one.

Think you’re a lost-cause as an artist because you only draw stick figures? Now would be a good time to reconsider. The illustrators over at design studio Differantly have drawn a selection of the world’s most iconic sneakers using only one line.
The two French artists behind the studio have distilled memorable kicks from Nike, Puma, Reebok, and more down to their essence. Each drawing is created without pen leaving paper, resulting in whimiscal swirled sketches composed from a sole unbroken line. Though clearly minimalist, the images are surprisingly complex and peppered with clever details.
“We often explore the concept of continuity through one continuous line creations. We are very attached to this drawing technique as it obliges to make strong choices and seek for efficiency with as little as possible,” explains Differantly. “Even though our creations are sleek and minimalist, our creative process comprises several phases, some of them being visually rich and complex. We always need a maturation time to let go what’s not substantive and make sure what remains is meaningful and has its own intrinsic beauty.”

If you aren’t familiar with German luxury brand Montblanc, firstly, shame on you for neglecting the instruments with which you write, but secondly, and most importantly, it’s a good time to get familiar, considering the Maison is this year celebrating 110 years of pioneering spirit.
But where did it all begin? In 1906, Hamburg merchant Alfred Nehemias and engineer August Eberstein teamed up with Claus Voss, combining a vision of performance, innovation and quality with an entrepreneurial eye for innovation, to produce a writing instrument with non-leaking technology and a piston convertor that would change the course of writing history forever.
In 1909, the trio who originally traded as the “Simplo Filler Pen Co” created an early premium-quality writing instrument they dubbed “Rouge et Noir”. A year later, the name Montblanc was adopted, inspired by the highest mountain in Europe that would come to symbolise their vision of excellence and their pursuit of ultimate performance and the finest craftsmanship.
110 years later and Montblanc have mastered an arsenal of products from 1924’s Meisterstück fountain pen, to a range of writing-related leather pieces, cufflinks, jewellery and of course, finely crafted timepieces that reflect the Maison’s dedication to technical innovation, functionality, and style, and catering to every man’s needs.
From a simple breakthrough in handwriting technology came a larger vision for Montblanc, who this year are celebrating a rich history with the new “Rouge et Noir” collection of writing instruments, stylish jewellery and elegant leather craft.
The lucky bastards of D’Marge recently peeped the collection in Singapore, and here’s the the lowdown…
Writing Instruments
Any man of considered style knows a leaky biro simply won’t do if you take yourself, and your handwriting seriously.
In celebration of its 110th anniversary, Montblanc have returned to the beginning, reimagining the brand’s first 1909 “Rouge et Noir” fountain-pen series. While the revamped Rouge & Noir writing instruments evoke the pioneering spirit of Montblanc with a vintage look and feel, the design brings a contemporary twist to the early model with a slimmer and longer silhouette, as well as incorporating modern piston technology.
There’s no way we can describe the Montblanc’s Rouge & Noir writing instruments without mentioning the best bit: the serpent. With its sensual curves, the serpent features prominently through the entire Rouge et Noir collection, and wraps around the top of the writing instruments, undulating down the cap to become the clip.
So, what is the significance of the serpent? It’s a design motif of the Art Nouveau and Art Deco period and represents desire, power and mystery, as well as rebirth and renewal, making it a fitting tribute to Montblanc’s quest for excellence since 1906. Plus, we think a serpent wrapped around the top of your pen looks pretty damn cool.
Men’s Accessories
Now we’ve got your tools sorted, how about the accessories to compliment? In celebration of 110 years of craftsmanship and coinciding with the Rouge & Noir writing instruments, Montblanc have introduced a new collection of men’s accessories, including cufflinks, a tie bar and bracelet centered around the recurrent serpent theme.
Honouring the Maison’s founders: Nehemias, Eberstein and Voss, three one-of-a-kind cufflinks make up Montblanc’s Heritage men’s accessories offering, in yellow gold, white gold and red gold designed to be paired with the one-of-a-kind Ultimate Serpent writing instrument. In a technical feat, a brilliant Montblanc diamond is suspended at the centre of the cufflink, rotating slightly like a real compass.
Leather
With a design concept inspired by a pioneering spirit since 1906, Montblanc have also introduced a bespoke leather piece in celebration of its 110th anniversary: the Steamer Bag.
Crafted from the finest soft grain leather, the steamer bag is the Maison’s first interpretation of this early 20th century style of luggage, designed to accompany larger trunks for sea voyages aboard the great Atlantic Ocean liners, and reminiscent of the era in which Montblanc was founded.
Timepieces
Despite having only made its foray into watchmaking in 1997, Montblanc is paying tribute to 110 years of fine craftsmanship with three limited edition timepieces.
The Montblanc Collection Villeret Tourbillon Bi-Cylindrique 110 Years Anniversary Limited Edition is a wristwatch that features an in-house one-minute tourbillon, a double cylindrical balance spring and the Maison’s Heures Mystérieuses – which sets new records in terms of ultimate precision and innovation combined with artisanal aesthetic.
Montblanc’s 110th year recurring motif can be seen on the face of this Villeret Tourbillon Bi-Cylindrique timepiece, where a three-dimensional, hand-engraved, anthracite serpent has been integrated into the bezel. The design has also been hand-engraved into the back of the 52 mm red gold case.
A large tourbillon occupies the top half of the watch’s face, while a subdial of the same dimension at 6 o’clock shows the time display below. A closer look reveals an unusual set of regate-shaped hands that are unattached, floating mysteriously above the subdial. This fascinating complication is called the Heures Mystérieuses and was inspired by the mysterious clocks of the 19th century.
All of the timepiece’s 95 components are hand-bevelled, chamfered, angled, polished and decorated in-house by Montblanc’s master craftsmen, following the same techniques of techniques of decoration used centuries ago.
So there you have it. It’s been 110 years of pioneering for Montblanc, and today the Maison can proudly present a range of men’s essentials that not only celebrate a rich history of craftsmanship, but reflect incredible attention to detail, innovation, functionality, style and most importantly, demonstrate that whether you’re a style novice, watch aficionado, writing instrument collector or luxury expert, Montblanc have you covered. It’s time to rewrite the rules.

Think of the tech you can’t live without. Maybe it’s the smartphone you use to waste hours of time on Instagram. Maybe it’s the camera you use to take envy-inducing vacation photos. Maybe it’s the gaming console you’re glued to the second your girlfriend is out of town.
Each device can be traced back to one model that changed the course of technology for good. It’s those illustrious bits of gear that TIME Magazine has honoured with its list of ‘The 50 Most Influential Gadgets of All Time.’
“Rather than rank technologies—writing, electricity, and so on—we chose to rank gadgets, the devices by with consumers let the future creep into their present,” writes TIME. “The list—which is ordered by influence—was assembled and deliberated on at (extreme) length by TIME’s technology and business editors, writers and reporters.”
From the newest of the new (Oculus Rift), to the charmingly retro (Victrola Record Player), to the nostalgic (Sony Walkman), to the laughable (Segway), the list is a potent reminder of how far we’ve come and how far we can go.
