American Man’s Incredible Fitness Journey Is An Inspiration To Us All
American Man’s Incredible Fitness Journey Is An Inspiration To Us All

Whether you’re in lockdown right now and struggling to summon the will to lift at home, or whether you have the gym at your beck and call but your fitness journey is not where you’d like it to be, a bit of Monday Motivation can sometimes come in handy for us all.Enter: a recent video posted by American man Anthony Lopez, which is currently doing the rounds on Instagram.Posted two weeks ago but still racking up likes and comments, the clip shows Mr Lopez’ transformation from 600 pounds to 265 pounds – and him looking back on an old video and reflecting.“Looking back at this clip notice that I still had a smile on my face,” Mr Lopez captioned the video. “I loved myself at that size. I just needed to realize that I had a problem and had to fix it.”

“I had to fix years of bad habits, years of using food as a crutch losing over 100 pounds, then using the sleeve as a tool. I’m busting my butt daily in and out the gym to show that it’s never too late to fix a problem you caused.”

The video attracted comments like the following:“My man did what most people can’t. He put in the hard work to make his life better instead of using any of a 1000 excuses and that deserves the most respect.”Another Instagram user wrote: “You always had a smile on your face even remembering you in high school. You seriously never had a sour mood. That’s why everyone loves you!”

“Haha so awesome to see your journey and can’t wait to see where it surpasses even your own expectations!”

Other comments included: “My respects bro” and “Hard work beats talent.”

“Keep up that smile and keep going.”

Finally, one Instagram user asked: “Did you change eating habits first or both simultaneously eating habits and started working out?”Though Mr Lopez has not at the time of writing responded to that question, the Mayo Clinic has some useful information in regards to it (though to sum up, the answer is basically: ‘Do both’).According to the Mayo Clinic, “Cutting calories appears to promote weight loss more effectively than does increasing exercise.”

“The key to weight loss is to consume fewer calories than you burn. For most people, it’s possible to lower calorie intake to a greater degree than it is to burn more calories through increased exercise.”

“That’s the reason cutting calories through dietary changes is generally more effective for weight loss,” Mayo Clinic adds.

“But doing both – cutting calories through diet and burning calories through exercise – can help give you the weight-loss edge.”

“If you lose weight by crash dieting or by drastically restricting yourself to 400 to 800 calories a day, you’re more likely to regain weight quickly, often within six months after you stop dieting.”“Exercise can help you maintain your weight loss. Studies show that people who lose weight and keep it off over the long term get regular physical activity.”Speaking of maintaining weight loss, Mr Lopez has posted numerous videos in recent weeks, too, showing how he does just that – as well as dropping advice like, “There is no such thing as the perfect time” and, “Do it for yourself, not the approval of others.”Well said.

Eddie Redmayne Officially The Best Dressed Man Of Wimbledon 2021

The fortnight-long cavalcade of high society and blistering backhands that is The Championships – better known as Wimbledon – has finally wrapped up.The oldest and most prestigious tennis tournament in the world, Wimbledon is one of the most exciting sporting events of the year and one that’s unlike any other. It’s filled with old-timey traditions and glamour, and regularly attracts the who’s who of the international celebrity and jet set.Perhaps the most famous Wimbledon tradition is the strict all-white dress code for competitors and royals in attendance. Beyond that, there’s a widely-held expectation that you dress up for Wimbledon. These days, it’s a far more relaxed affair – but the well-to-do still like to bring their sartorial A-game.Our vote for the best-dressed man of Wimbledon 2021? English actor and Officer of the Order of the British Empire Mr. Eddie Redmayne. The dapper gent might not be royal but he certainly dressed the part, turning up to the tournament on Wednesday in a cream woollen Ralph Lauren suit, brown tasselled loafers, Garrett Leight ‘Kinney Sun’ sunglasses and a blue OMEGA Globemaster perched on his wrist.

It’s a bold and summery look that stood out even among the scores of stylish men and women in attendance… And made some style slackers, like Saturday Night Live comedian Pete Davidson, look rather churlish in comparison.RELATED: Comedian Pete Davidson Commits Cardinal Wimbledon Style SinSome other men who looked particularly good at the tournament included Tom Cruise, who looked sharp in a three-piece suit during the women’s singles final; Benedict Cumberbatch, who donned a large Panama hat and blue linen number on Wednesday; and Daniel Ricciardo, who was all smiles (predictably) in a navy Prince of Wales check suit.Wimbledon 2021 was a particularly good tournament for Aussie tennis fans, with Ash Barty emerging victorious against Karolína Plíšková in a truly exceptional women’s singles final and Dylan Alcott beating Sam Schröder in straight sets to take home the wheelchair quad singles. In the men’s singles, Novak Djokovic took down Matteo Berrettini in a hard-fought four-set game, reaffirming his status as world #1.

Dan Bilzerian’s Aggressive New Haircut Sends The Internet Into A Frenzy
Dan Bilzerian’s Aggressive New Haircut Sends The Internet Into A Frenzy

Dan Bilzerian has made a name for himself for being a caricature of 21st-century masculinity. Of being muscly, rich, testosterone-fuelled, and constantly covered in admirers. Though many argue his affection is bought and that deep down his life must be an empty, superficial husk (because, let’s be honest, as a critic the alternative would be unbearable), the man simply doesn’t give a f*ck.Despite the crazy antics he shares almost daily, and despite the over the top lifestyle he has led for many years, his haircut has never matched it. Up until recently, Bilzerian has almost exclusively been seen rocking a conservative short back and sides. That changed yesterday. On Sunday Bilzerian took to Instagram to show off a brand new haircut which puts the aggressive trims we’ve seen from the likes of David Beckham, Cristiano Ronaldo and Justin Bieber over the last lockdown littered year and a half to shame.

The photo is taken in a car. The car could be headed anywhere (though given he recently posted a story of the McGregor vs. Poirier fight, it may well have been in Las Vegas) and shows Bilzerian rocking a – as he calls it – “white trash” Mohawk, shaggy on top and the sides, but with the sides shaved. The new haircut inspired an avalanche of fawning comments on Instagram from followers and other influencer-aspirants like: “What an incredible picture” and “Your hair.”“Good to have you back,” wrote another. The 40-year-old professional gambler and “Instagram playboy” also recently claimed he had finished his autobiography (though this isn’t the first time he has claimed to have finished it), after an uncharacteristic period of social media inactivity. He has talked about finishing the book on both Twitter and Instagram previously.

When it eventually gets released he claims he will “spill the tea” on everything from his time with the navy SEALS to his father being sentenced to jail under Rudy Giuliani’s stint as US Attorney to being bullied as a kid.RELATED: Scott Disick Spotted Rocking The Men’s Haircut That Refused To Die In 2020Bilzerian is not alone in opting for an extreme haircut in 2021. Though his appears to be a spontaneous summer choice, many men all over the world have been inspired to get a low maintenance (or hard reset) haircut this year in light of the pandemic and its various lockdowns (and the work from home revolution). On the other side of the coin, some are taking this chance to grow out their long luscious locks.Maybe that’s next up on Bilzerian’s agenda? Or perhaps he will see the light and go for the classic Australian version of the cut – the iconic Skullet.Only time (and Instagram) will tell.

1973 Tuscany Photo Proves Why Summer In Italy Will Never Go Out Of Style
1973 Tuscany Photo Proves Why Summer In Italy Will Never Go Out Of Style

With all the frontiers falling shut over the last year and a half; with all the passports in drawers gathering dust; with nations shrinking into themselves, it’s easy to forget (when you’re not looking at the photos that show what we’re all missing out on) that there’s a whole world out there to explore.

To that end: chuck your brain in a vat with this “Summer at Hotel Il Pellicano in Porto Ercole, Italy” photo and tell us Italian beaches aren’t the yardstick by which all Salt Interfaces should be judged by.

View this post on Instagram

A post shared by Historic Pictures (@historic_imagery)

Taken by legendary photographer Slim Aarons in August 1973, the photo shows Tuscany looking very Tuscany.

It also shows why summer in Italy will never go out of style.

RELATED: Parisian Photographer Reveals ‘Weird’ Beach Habit Australians Think Is Normal

Why? At the risk of Going All Grinch – no sand means no ball games. No waves mean no megaphone-wielding lifeguards. No early morning swim groups mean no budgee smuggling conferences.

It’s timeless, peaceful; classic.

It’s also reassuring to know that – at Hotel Pellicano II – it will never change (as the hotel itself has promised on Instagram).

Though you never want to become a calcified thinker, without a little bit of tradition people go a bit crazy, we reckon. And this is a hell of a picturesque thread to the past.

DMARGE interviewed a bunch of photographers recently to see if they agreed with the idea Italian beaches really are classier than Australian ones, or if we just have a massive chip on our shoulder.

Some agreed, some didn’t.

Photographer ilana Sallick (@thelensandi) told DMARGE that – although European beaches are “definitely thought of as photogenic” – she thinks a big part of why we over glamorise Europe (and potentially undervalue our own beach culture) “is a result of photographers, like Slim Aarons, who have showcased the rich and famous at play at private beach clubs.”

“These old photographs conjure up feelings of a romantic, worldly and glamorous lifestyle that is so different to what we have in Australia – or who we are…”

Australia is a [different] country with a laid back lifestyle,” ilana added. “We love the outdoors. I think Australia’s overall warmer climate helps as we generally spend more time outdoors, at the beach than in Europe. We go to the beach to have fun in the water, and relax on the sand.”

“I think it also helps in Australia that a lot of our beaches are surrounded by nature, full of soft white sand, Compared to Europe’s pebbled beaches that are often sandwiched between old towns and buildings.”

DMARGE also spoke to photographer Rachael Kane, who has experience taking photos in Italy’s Capri and Amalfi Coast as well as Sydney’s Eastern and Northern beaches.

RELATED: ‘Classy’ Photo Reveals Difference Between Sunbathing In Europe & Australia

Rachael told us Europe’s classy reputation is, in her view, deserved: “I personally find photographing the beaches in Europe a different experience to Australia, and I adore the Australian coastline.”

“The European coastlines from Cannes to Corfu are enchanting, there is a depth of colour and contrast, there is height and drama, and there is no getting around it there is a level of sophistication and style that Australian beaches just don’t have, and oh boy is it beautiful to photograph.”

RELATED: ‘A Place To See & Be Seen’: Incredible Photo Shows Why Every Traveller Should Visit Capri Once

“I think it is a magic cocktail of; people at the beach are all on holidays, they are walking to the beach, they dress to impress – no matter if you are a movie star or a mechanic.”

“Anchored off the calm Mediterranean beaches are glamourous super yachts. You as a participant absorb the beauty, you believe in it. No sand no worries, they happily lie on pebbles all day to unashamedly worship the sun, or even better a sun lounge on the pebbles with a personal waiter.”

“All these elements add a depth to the images you take. I know many Australians who live in beachside suburbs but only ‘go to the beach’ when they are on holidays in Europe.”

Bringing this all back to the original image of Hotel Pellicano II… if your interest has been piqued, Hotel Pellicano is located in Tuscany’s Maremma region.

Hotel Pellicano began in 1965, when two lovers, a charismatic American socialite and dashing British aviator, created a romantic hideaway in a secret cove.

Glamorous friends came to bathe in the delicious azure sea and party by moonlight, soon the gorgeous Tuscan home was transformed into Il Pellicano.

The rest is history.

Plant-Based Meat Flawed In A Big Way, Study Finds
Plant-Based Meat Flawed In A Big Way, Study Finds

If there’s one thing we can be sure of when it comes to nutrition, it’s that you will always be bombarded by other people’s opinions about what you should and shouldn’t eat.In one camp, you have the carnivores; the ones who claim eating animal-based products such as meat is the best way to get all the nutrients your body needs. In the other corner, you have the plant-based contingent, who argue humans aren’t made to eat meat and that we don’t need it to be healthy. For peace of mind, you’ll do well to slot yourself into the up and coming nutrivore camp, which spruiks the idea you should just listen to your body. If you don’t feed it meat and you feel yourself lacking serious energy, reintroduce it in limited quantities to see if it has any effect. If it does, continue down the path. One thing’s for sure: there will never be an end to the argument. One man who likes to weigh in his authoritative two cents is nutrition coach Max Lugavere. Lugavere is always one to listen to both sides. But ultimately he always comes to his own, research-based conclusions. His latest Instagram post concerns plant-based meat, specifically, with him referencing a study that recently found it isn’t nutritionally equivalent to real meat. While many of you may immediately think, “No shit”, there are many who will be surprised by this, given the claims made in documentaries like The Game Changers.

View this post on Instagram

A post shared by Max Lugavere (@maxlugavere)

The study Lugavere references found “beef samples [of meat] contained 22 metabolites that the plant substitute did not, while the plant-based meat contained 31 metabolite not found in real meat.”

“The scientists found that several metabolites known to be important to human health – such as creatine, spermine, answering and the omega-3 fatty acid DHA – were found ‘either exclusively or in greater quantities’ in beef.”

Many claim plant-based meat is just as protein-rich, for example. This may well be the case, and plant-based meat can be a good source of protein, but that isn’t all it contains. Plant-based meats don’t have the other natural nutrients found in animal-based meat, like creatine or B12, for instance.“Nutritional wokeism is pervasive”, says Lugavere. “It echos unhelpful strategies like ‘eat everything in moderation’, ‘portion control’, ‘calories are all that matter’, ‘eat less, move more’, and my favourite, ‘food is food’.”

“It also guilt-trips us away from animal products, using broad and scary language and health and the environment.”Going on to claim there are “good and bad production methods for the environment; meat-containing meals that are promotive of health and those that aren’t”, he summarises by saying:

“The reality is animal products are incredibly nutrient dense and satiating and should not be under appreciated.”

RELATED: Nutrition Coach Reveals The Uncomfortable Truth About Factory Farmed MeatSo, while Lugavere doesn’t say you shouldn’t eat meat – if you want to stick to a plant-based diet, that’s totally fine – he just reminds us that if we want our bodies to receive the best possible quality and quantity of essential nutrients, animal-based meat once again comes out on top. It’s also worth remembering individual studies don’t provide hard and fast evidence on anything – they just comprise part of the academic landscape, edging us towards better-informed conclusions. And you can always supplement a vegan diet with creatine and B12 supplements. The important thing here is to remember you can’t substitute fake meat for real meat like for like. Not that you should never eat fake meat.Likewise – as this clash between The Game Changers’ James Wilks (a vegan activist) and paleo diet advocate Chris Kresser on the Joe Rogan podcast shows (where Kresser is forced to eat some humble pie), the vegans aren’t the only ones guilty of misrepresenting the other side.

The Rude Watch Behaviour Too Many Australians Are Guilty Of
The Rude Watch Behaviour Too Many Australians Are Guilty Of

Watch etiquette can be confusing, and some rules are worth following more religiously than others. The idea that you should only wear your watch on your non-dominant hand, for example, is a rather old-fashioned principle that few people follow these days. Another one that’s perhaps more important to keep in mind – but one that’s also regularly ignored by many watch fans – is that you should never wear a dive watch with a suit. The list goes on.But there’s one watch rule that you really shouldn’t ever break – and that’s asking how much someone paid for a watch.Generally speaking, asking someone how much they paid for anything, whether that’s a car, a house or a jacket, is poor form. As this Quora thread eloquently puts it, “people should no more ask the cost of your watch than a woman’s engagement ring.”But it seems as if many people (especially Aussies) aren’t quite so considerate when it comes to watches. It’s like a blind spot in our manners. Maybe it’s because we’re generally a pretty laid-back, casual sort of people – or maybe it’s because watch collecting isn’t quite as common within Australian society as, say, property ownership is.RELATED: Australia’s Favourite Speculative ‘Hobby’ Has Economists Clutching Their CalculatorsLast year, we spoke with an Australian watch fan who had picked up a Rolex Submariner ‘Hulk’ – one of the most desirable and aggressively speculated-upon watches in recent memory – and found that he hated wearing it, because so many people would ask him impolite questions about how much it cost.“I’m looking forward to getting another watch, because people constantly stop me and ask about it… They always ask me the same three questions: when did I get it, where did I get it, and did I pay retail for it.”

The Rolex Submariner (ref. 116610LV), better known as the ‘Hulk’. Image: Bob’s Watches
While you’d think this is a rather trivial reason to get rid of a watch, the point still stands: it’s incredibly impolite and irksome to ask someone how much they paid for a watch. Even more so whether they got a discount. But are we making a mountain out of a molehill? DMARGE spoke exclusive with Chamath Gamage (@champsg), noted Australian watch collector and founder of watchadvice.com.au, who has a more magnanimous take on the matter.“I personally don’t mind if someone asks how much my watch is. I usually enjoy their reaction.”

“In my opinion, I believe a person who asks that question, is usually not a person who is well versed in watches. If you understand that thinking, you probably won’t find it impolite or get offended.”

“It also comes down to how the question is asked, if they are genuinely curious about my watch and the ‘cost’ question comes up then I think that’s is a fair question to ask.”RELATED: Tom Brady Flexes His First Luxury Watch Purchase… & It’s Surprisingly AffordableIndeed, he thinks that sometimes the balance of good taste can sometimes swing the other way when it comes to wearing high-end timepieces.“Sometimes, I do feel like I am being judged for having a watch that one might consider too expensive… [But] I personally don’t think putting a monetary value on a watch undermines watch collecting. At the end of the day, I enjoy watch collecting and I’m not bothered about what others think.”

A post shared by Chamath Gamage (@champsg)

Gamage reckons there are far worse offences than asking how much someone’s watch costs – namely, asking more personal questions of a watch owner.

“Often after finding out how much my watch costs, they’ll ask what I do for a living, which I’m generally happy to answer but it can come across as rude depending on how they ask or the tone they use.”

“Another question I find rude is asking where I bought a certain watch and that person asking me to put in a good word with the Authorised Dealer (AD) to help them to get a specific watch.”“Now, I am more than happy to help, but putting in a good word typically doesn’t help their cause, as they should build the relationship with the AD (just like I have!). I also see questions such as ‘did you wait a long time for the watch’, ‘which AD did you get your watch from’ on forums and I personally don’t see how it helps.”RELATED: Canada, China or Colombia? Where To Score Rolex’s Hard To Find ModelsAs Oscar Wilde once said, “nowadays people know the price of everything and the value of nothing.” The value of a watch isn’t always easily expressed as a dollar figure. Watches are family heirlooms; gifts from loved ones or colleagues; a reflection of someone’s character, personality or history. Our advice? Don’t be fixated on what a watch is worth, and much like anything to do with money, let a watch owner freely volunteer how much they paid for a watch rather than risk being impolite and asking yourself.

Will Smith Gives Tourists Glimpse At Dubai’s Craziest Attraction Yet
Will Smith Gives Tourists Glimpse At Dubai’s Craziest Attraction Yet

In Hollywood, they say you should reach for the stars, the sky is the limit, or any other idiom that involves shooting yourself upwards. But what can you achieve when you do the opposite and aim down? That’s exactly what global megastar Will Smith just did, by submerging himself in the world’s deepest pool.Taking to Instagram with a video to share with his followers, the Fresh Prince of Bel Air star revealed he was at Deep Dive Dubai, a brand new attraction in the billionaire’s playground that opened its doors on July 7th 2021. With a depth of 60.02 metres/197ft, it comfortably lays claim to the crown. What makes Deep Dive Dubai so exhilarating is that it’s not just a swimming pool that allows you to descend to unimaginable depths. It’s been modelled to resemble an underwater city, meaning scuba divers can go exploring various nooks and crannies, without needing to keep one eye on what might be swimming up behind them to eat them for breakfast. [Watch below]

Speaking to his followers, Will says he is “always in Dubai…and a friend of mine told me I had to check out this pool, there’s something weird about it.”He then submerges the camera underwater to show off just how deep it is, and the sculptures that can be explored. As of yet, he hasn’t posted any footage of himself actually diving into the pool, but we wouldn’t be surprised if something cropped up in the next few days.Deep Dive Dubai – which holds some 14 million litres of water and is heated to 30-degrees – has dethroned Deepspot, another deep freshwater pool in Poland that opened in 2020, with a depth of 45m. And, naturally, being found in Dubai, there are plenty of other attractions to it, including conference spaces, an 80-seat restaurant and a video editing bay.The official website says:“Explore a stunning underwater attraction that is themed to resemble an abandoned sunken city. It will take several dives to explore this vast underwater city, which is filled with adventure and wonder. The pool is equipped with 56 cameras to ensure the safety of the divers. State-of-the-art lighting and sound systems create a variety of underwater moods.”

We’re not sure which would be scarier. Diving down to some serious depths, or swimming in our speedos 115-feet in the air, as you can do with the recently opened Sky Pool in London, England. We’ll settle for Bondi Icebergs for now, thanks.

Rare Emotional Conor McGregor Moment Holds Important Message For All Men

There’s a reason The Quiet Guy has become a trope. From kids’ stories (see: Harry Potter’s Cedric Diggory) to sex-and-gore filled HBO series (see: Vikings’ Ragnar Lothbrok), we’ve been bashed over the head growing up that everyone prefers a stoic hero over a rambling bore. And they do.However, as we reported earlier this week, we should be careful to glamorise suffering in silence. Why? Men feel pressured to live up to the stereotype, which often leads to feelings of shame around showing emotion and opening up.This can lead to all sorts of mental health issues, and even suicide.RELATED: Psychologist Breaks Down The ‘Viking’ Mindset We Shouldn’t Be Too Quick To Dismiss…But Also Careful WithWhere does the loudmouth MMA fighter – the man who ‘made the UFC game’ – come into all this? The Irishman whose one-liners have made his American compatriots look slow (“Nate can’t even count to 5“) for years, and whose fists, up until recent times, had been blessed with some magic, pre-emptive quality?Well, SportsCenter recently posted a video showing McGregor showing a bit of emotion. In response to a quote read out by a journalist at the press conference before his last fight with Justin Poirier, 33-year-old McGregor got hit right in the feels.“I wanted to read you a quote from 2013 that you said,” the journalist said to McGregor.“I’ve lost my mind doing this. Like Vincent van Gogh. He dedicated his life to his art and lost his mind in the process. That’s happened to me. But fuck it. When that gold belt is around my waist and when my mother has a big mansion, when my girlfriend has a different car for every day of the week, when my kids’ kids have everything they ever want…then it will pay.”

“Then I’ll be happy I lost my mind. I’ll die a crazy old man!”

“Can you just reflect and talk to me about how it feels hearing that in 2021?” the journalist asked.“It’s been some ride,” McGregor responded. “I’ve got it done and I’m up here mad as a brush. “Tell you what, I wouldn’t want it to be any other way.”

Comments left next to the video in the last 24 hours show McGregor, despite going off the rails a few times over the last few years, and despite not having the results he used to, still has a lot of love and respect from many fans.“Say what you want – he did his thing,” wrote one.“When you realize everything he said actually happened,” wrote another.

“Conor getting emotional am I in a dream or something?”

Other comments included, “Damn that’s real” and “This man did such a 180 with his personality and is actually such a likeable dude now. Crazy.”
