March 2020 had investors’ hearts in their mouths. Far from terrifying a new generation of young professionals to hide their cash under their beds however, many saw it as an opportunity to get into the stock market.
Driven by boredom and (to a degree) enabled by financial initiatives like JobKeeper and JobSeeker, there has been a boom in white-collar workers (both in Australia and abroad) using free trading apps like Robinhood and CommSec.
With many taking cues from internet forums and entertaining (if questionable) influences like Dave Portnoy (the founder of Bar Stool Sports and cocky day trading livestreamer who has been quoted saying, “I’m not saying I’m smarter than Warren Buffet… But I probably am”) and some even getting used to using the ASX or NASDAQ as a replacement form of gambling while COVID briefly had professional sport on hold, “an army of day traders” has been created, Bloomberg reports.
Of course, there have been some hair-raising failures, with couch potato day traders losing big bucks on silly share punts. But there’s also been a lot of success stories. Generally speaking, for those that got in after the March crash, the ASX and NASDAQ have been (relatively) friendly, thanks to governments artificially propping up their economies (a ‘stealing from the future’ phenomenon some say could have dire consequences, and others believe will simply tail off gradually as the ‘real’ economy comes up to meet the market, without too many negative effects).
The upshot? There is now a large community of overconfident new day traders and weekend warriors. Sound like you? You’ve now got two options: get chewed up and spat out, or continue growing your earnings in style. If you’re hoping for the latter, you might like to listen to the following gems of advice for rookie investors, courtesy of a selection of financial experts and advisors.
RELATED: Our Expert’s Scoop On The Best Australian Shares To Buy Right Now
AMP Financial Advisor Andrew Heaven told DMARGE that a failure to research is a common mistake new investors make.
“Make sure you do plenty of research on what types of investments are right for you… there are countless tools online with information on how to best enter the market, what to invest in and how to ensure you’re investing in something that aligns with your values and also financial goals.”
Knowing what you’re trying to achieve is also crucial, he relates.
“Regardless of whether you’re investing for the medium or long term, you need to be ready to commit to that timeframe. If you invest more than you can afford, you’re not being realistic about your goals and your cash will be tied up – meaning you’ll find yourself short when budgeting for your day-to-day life.”
“If you know what you’re trying to achieve and why, you’ll be less likely to wander off in a different direction or get distracted by short-term changes and volatility.”
Another common error (albeit maybe not the main one this new generation of eager rookies are making) is waiting until you ‘have the money’ to invest.
“It’s often thought that for investing, in general or for specific assets, you have to have a large chunk of money but everyone needs to start somewhere,” Heaven continues, “it’s important to note that a lot of people make their money by investing smaller amounts.”
“In 2020, it’s now easier than ever to enter the stock market without a lot of capital. Young people and those looking to get into the market don’t need to have huge piles of cash, and can look to get started by making use of a fractional investment platform, which can get you started for as little as $5.”
Heaven also advises rookie investors don’t fall into the trap of blindly following the crowd.
“Next time you hear a friend or family member talking about their next ‘big investment’ take a moment to remember that everyone is in a different financial position and on a different investment journey.”
“While the investment opportunity might sound fun and exciting, and your friend may sound very convincing and educated, take a moment to remember your financial goals and individual situation before jumping in.”
Those with a little more experience under their belts tend to make the opposite mistake in trying to be too clever: “one of the most common mistakes is trying to outsmart the market and predict falls and peaks.”
“While some investments might be easier than others to predict success, and we’d all love to outsmart the market by trying to time entry at that perfect, sweet spot for positive gains, it’s very difficult to do so. Doing your research and investing what you can afford, will leave you in a far better position than spending hours trying to ‘beat’ the market.”
On a recent episode of The BIP Show podcast, James Whelan – Investment Manager at VFS Group in Sydney – divulged another common error rookie investors commit: being tempted into making lots of little punts.
“You duck down to Ryan’s Bar, catch up with your mates, they say, ‘I’ve got a red hot tip for you Jimmy, you’ve got to get onto this one… they’re in Sierra Leone and they’re digging ants out of copper mines.”
“It’s just the biggest load of baloney… [but] you do a cursory look and purchase.”
“It’s the worst possible idea – you don’t know anything about it, you’re not that close to the company, it’s probably going to be a terrible idea anyway and there’s every likelihood that… on the other side of it someone is just selling into your buying.”
“If you’re not close to it, don’t even worry about it – at the small end of the scale.”
“It’s easy to keep up with what the HP’s are doing or CBA, Apple or Amazon because it’s in the news and it’s well disclosed. But the worst mistake you can make is to have a whole shoebox full of these [speculative] pieces.”
Another common faux pas is not cutting your losses. To help you have the confidence to do this, Chris Weston, head of research at Pepperstone, on the same podcast episode, said it’s important to understand position sizing.
“Everyone comes on board, they start trading FX markets or indices and all they’re focussed on is entry points.”
“[You see] signal services and all that nonsense advertised every day of the week on Youtube and it becomes completely infuriating.”
“Every time you go onto Facebook there’s a signal service trying to be pumped out – that’s not trading.”
“Getting into the market is about 10% of trading,” Weston said. More importantly: “you’ve got to get correct position sizing for the right size of your account. You’ve got to understand where your stock loss is, how much risk you’re taking, and understand what sort of reward you need to be taking from that.”
In other words: it’s not about obsessing over your win-loss ratio, but getting enough winnings from your wins (and not losing too much from your losses). In fact, some of the most successful traders have a 60% loss rate, but the amount they win vastly offsets them.
“A 40% success rate can still make you money [if you cut your losses correctly].”
Weston told The BIP Show this is a mistake he sees “time and time again” at a retail level.
According to Weston, it comes down to pure ego: “[many people] have made money in property, done well in life, run a successful business, etc. [Then they] start trading…”
“Human beings have been bred to be right [so they] will start making a loss on a position and continue holding that position.”
“There’s a saying: ‘professional traders go broke taking small profits, retail traders go broke taking massive losses.'”
“That is the number one reason I see people blowing up their accounts.”
“You don’t always have to be right – the notion you can accept a [small] loss and move onto something else is what trading’s all about.”
“You need a process.”

As the travel industry came to a halt in early 2020, tourists who like to scratch their itchy feet with soft billowy feathers (read: rich ones) feared for the worst. For those in the Antipodes, Euro July plans were reluctantly discarded and local jaunts were put on hold as interstate squabbles ensured uncertainty over even domestic Australian trips. The situation was similar in America, with grand travel plans being replaced by prosecco protests and controversial Missouri pool parties (certain tourism dependant destinations like Costa Rica and The Bahamas are now starting to open up to remote workers).Speaking of bouncing back, in Turkey it appears a rather lavish hotel (prices start at AU $600 a night), Calista Luxury Resort, is getting back in the swing of things, with guests’ Instagram posts providing us with a sneak peek into what like is currently like at the 5-star luxury Mediterranean resort.

Over the last month, travellers have shared images and videos of everything from four-wheel drive expeditions and boating adventures…

… to relaxing in the resort. The only thing missing (or if it’s not missing, it hasn’t featured in any recent posts) is the pool yoga. The Calista Luxury Resort has a private stretch of Mediterranean beach, a Surf and Sailing school, and luxury spa facilities. Not to mention: there are 10 golf courses within 7 km of it.Suffice to say: the resort is tempting not only for wealthy local residents, but overseas tourists (the ones who are permitted to leave their country and visit, anyway). As The Sun reports, holidays to Turkey are now costing tourists less as the local currency plummets.

If that weren’t enough of a drawcard Calista Luxury Resort also has 5 floodlit tennis courts, a 5-a-side football pitch, a bowling alley and more boating opportunities than you can throw a ballast at.On top of that, all guest accommodations at Calista Luxury Resort have a private balcony or terrace, with sea or mountain views, satellite TV, free WiFi and a spacious en suite. Some of the photos the resort uses to advertise itself on Booking.com appear to show there may also be a butler service.

As Istanbul-based luxury yacht manager Candaş Balci recently told DMARGE, due to the pandemic preventing many from enjoying their usual summer sprawl in places like Monaco and Cannes, “it’s a very busy season in Turkey right now.”Once The Pandemic situation eases, however, Candaş says the first places he believes The Super Rich will flock to are: the south of France, Italy, Ibiza, Sardinia and St Tropez.
“For one or two years they will stay locally on the Turkish coasts, Greek Islands maybe [which has a more relaxed policy currently in place for visitors]… after that – very busy days for Ibiza and St Tropez.”
Cannes, Antibes, Portofino, and Monaco are on Candaş’ clients hit lists too.

It’s been a big week for Rolex fans.Ahead of their 2020 model launch, speculation was rife as to what the brand was going to bring to the table this year. ‘Conspiracies‘ and bold predictions abounded; hype was at a predictably stratospheric level; fans were restless.September 1st came and Rolex had the floor, announcing a number of updates and new offerings. While the Datejust, Oyster Perpetual and Sky-Dweller got some love, the focus of the launch was squarely on the Submariner, arguably Rolex’s most iconic model and one of the most consistently popular timepieces of all time.In a big move for the conservative brand, Rolex has overhauled the staid diver’s watch: slightly bigger with a more shapely design and an updated movement, the new ‘Sub’ is also available in a number of new colour combinations, most notably the black dial / green bezel colourway that’s already been dubbed the ‘Hermit’.RELATED: Rolex Drops Its Largest Submariner To Date, Complete With New MovementHowever, it’s very much a case of ‘out with the old, in with the new’ as news that Rolex is discontinuing one of their most unexpectedly popular models of all time has almost overshadowed yesterday’s announcements. What’s the controversy? The Rolex Submariner 116610LV, better known as the ‘Hulk’ thanks to its green dial and bezel, is being discontinued by the Swiss horological titan in 2020 – and the aftermarket has already gone bananas.Belgium-based watch fan @watchrookiee shared on their Instagram Story evidence of how Chrono24, the world’s biggest watch aftermarket, has reacted to the Hulk discontinuation: interest in the ‘Hulk’ has skyrocketed, as have prices.
The Hulk was first released in 2010, and was originally considered a cheaper alternative to the much more desirable black dial / green bezel ‘Kermit’ (which Rolex has re-released in 2020). The double green initially failed to inspire Rolex fans, but in the years since the Hulk has steadily become a genuine Rolex ‘grail’ alongside other models like the GMT-Master II ‘Pepsi’ and ‘Batman’ or the Daytona ‘Paul Newman’ and ‘John Player Special’.Prices have remained reasonably steady, hovering around 17,000 USD (~23,000 AUD) for a mint-condition Hulk Submariner Date, but since yesterday’s confirmation of the Hulk’s demise, prices have steadily increased. At the moment, 23,000 AUD would get you a preowned Hulk down the lower end, with unworn Hulks now fetching an even higher premium. It’s early days yet but interest in the Hulk is likely to only grow as the news of its discontinuation makes the rounds.Conversely, now that the ‘Hermit’ will be back in boutiques, the similar ‘Kermit’ might see its prices take a slight dip. (Indeed it’s called the ‘Hermit’ because it combines the heftiness of the ‘Hulk’ with the colourscheme of the ‘Kermit’.) That said, the original ‘Kermit’ had an aluminium bezel while the 2020 release has a Cerachrom bezel, and the older ‘Kermit’ is slightly smaller at 40mm. They are small differences but Rolex fans are incredibly discerning – again, time will tell.Perhaps the ‘Hulk’ has been discontinued because the updated, larger Submariner might eventually be given the green dial treatment. Rolex tends to save the colour green for special occasions – being that Rolex pulled out of Baselworld, maybe they’re saving a new ‘Hulk’ for another convention? One thing is clear: current ‘Hulk’ owners are feeling pretty good right about now.Read Next

It’s not often destinations make requests of tourists. Normally travellers make demands of the places they are out to see, holding them to account on forums like TripAdvisor (often to the point you wonder whether they are talking about a stretch of sand or a careless ex-lover).2020 has changed all that. It’s now par for the course for tourism-dependent destinations to make health and safety requests of those who come to visit. From requesting a COVID negative test before exiting the airport to enforcing a mandatory 14-day hotel quarantine on arrival, the strategies are varied. The aim? Limit the spread of The Bat Kiss. One beachy Brazilian paradise has just made an unconventional demand of any tourist that visits. To enjoy the tropical idyll that is Fernando de Noronha, a Brazilian island which sits 334km off the country’s northeastern coast (with the “the world’s best beach” to boot), you must have had COVID-19.Dig a little deeper and you’ll find the request makes sense: you must have had COVID-19 and have recovered from it.“Visitors will need to prove they have recovered from the virus, and will need to submit one of two types of tests – PCR virus tests or IgG antibody tests – at least 20 days before arriving at the island,” Traveller reports.

Famous for abundant sea life, pristine beaches and dramatic mountainsides rising above the coast, Fernando de Noronha is a tourist mecca and UNESCO world heritage site.“The move by the tourism-dependent archipelago, which has about 3,100 permanent residents according to the most recent census estimate, speaks to the unique ways that state, local and national governments are trying to return to a semblance of normal as new COVID-19 cases and deaths stabilize in many parts of the world,” Reuters reports.Flights already appear to be filling up with island employees.

The island’s decision has also sparked debate over the level of immunity that coronavirus patients develop after surviving a first infection. As Reuters reports, though there have been cases of re-infection reported, including in Brazil, such instances are “relatively rare.”Guilherme Rocha, Fernando de Noronha’s administrator, said of the policy: “Only tourists who have already had COVID and have recovered and are immune to the disease will be authorised (since) they can neither transmit it, nor be infected again.”André Longo, the health secretary of the state of Pernambuco, said in a statement: “There hasn’t been community transmission on the island for a long time. We have to keep it that way.”
“Obviously, this step is going to be done with an eye on safety and reactivating economic activity on the archipelago.”
At the time of writing Fernando de Noronha has reported 93 confirmed cases of coronavirus and no deaths. It banned tourism in March and has now re-opened to tourists who have recovered from COVID, starting September the 1st.

Mainland Brazil has experienced 120,000 known deaths and 3.8 million confirmed cases. This number has begun to stabilise in recent weeks but remains high. Controversial Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro has attracted domestic and international condemnation for his laissez-faire approach to The Pandemic – one that has softened slightly since he caught the dangerous virus, ironically.

To say that 2020 has been crazy would be an understatement. Alongside koalas drinking bottled water and the raised fist of the Black Lives Matter movement, one of the most prescient symbols of this year has been the humble surgical mask. Previously confined to the domain of emergency rooms or doctor’s offices, the utilitarian facial covering is perhaps one of the most obvious signs of the extent to which The Pandemic has affected society.Wearing PPE out in public has become de rigeur (and indeed, a legal requirement in many places) this year. Indeed, it’s a great leveller: whether you’re rich or poor, famous or a nobody, everyone’s wearing a mask. But just because you have to wear it doesn’t mean you should let it ruin an outfit.French football superstar Kylian Mbappé, forward for UEFA Champions League final-making team Paris Saint-Germain, certainly knows how not to let PPE dominate your dress. The stylish young athlete shared a photo to his Instagram of him at Clairefontaine, the French national football academy, pairing a cheap and cheerful white surgical mask with a dazzling ~31,000 AUD Hublot Big Bang Steel Pavé watch.
Hublot sponsors the skilled Frenchman, so he’s regularly spotted with some of their finest watches, such as this ‘millennial pink’ Big Bang model. ‘Pavé’ refers to a setting of precious stones placed so closely together that no metal shows, which is exactly what this timepiece exhibits. The diamond-encrusted wrist candy isn’t the only thing Mbappé’s flexing here: the Nike x Pigalle Hoodie in ‘Luminous Green’ he’s wearing, a limited-edition collaboration between the American sportswear giant and French basketball/streetwear brand, will also have hypebeasts’ mouths watering.RELATED: Best French Menswear Brands To Own Right NowIt’s a surprisingly classy and cohesive ensemble which speaks to Mbappé’s youthful nature. It also distracts from the surgical mask… Or maybe we’ve just grown so accustomed to seeing people wear them that they no longer ‘ruin’ outfits. Actually, the mask almost works with the outfit, to give Mbappé credit.Maybe it just goes to show how effective – and ubiquitous – the humble surgical mask has become in 2020?In many societies, wearing PPE pre-emptively if you’re feeling unwell has been a cultural norm for many years. Walk the streets of Tokyo’s fashionable Shibuya for example and you’ll see how the Japanese have already perfected the art of matching face masks with their outfits. It’s only now that people in other countries where this courtesy used to not be so common – say fashion capital France, where wearing a mask on public transport pre-COVID would have attracted revulsion – have started to think about how they combine PPE with an outfit. That a scion of French style and sporting excellence like Kylian Mbappé so confidently rocks the mask like this is a real sign of the times. We’re just impressed that he makes it look so effortless. Bravo, Mbappé.

With These Unprecedented Times showing no real sign of slowing down anytime soon – at least, not before Christmas – keeping yourself protected is still just as paramount as it was when ‘the situation’ first hit. One of the best forms of defence is to invest in a facemask, to protect not only yourself but those around you.
We’ve seen a whole range of cool face masks spring up from various retailers that certainly take the edge of donning the conventional blue hospital-esque version. However, a lot of these styles of face mask can be on the more expensive end of the budget scale, but Japanese clothing retailer UNIQLO may have just come out with the most affordable form of defence for Americans this year.
The retailer is no stranger to offering up all the essentials you could ever need for low prices, but this three-pack of AIRism face masks is one of the most tantalising prospects we’ve seen in some time.
Coming in white or black, UNIQLO’s AIRism face mask integrates a high-performance filter for ultimate protection against particles, as well as keeping you dry from any light water splashes. They’re washable too, and since you get three in one pack, you can always keep them on rotation after each use. Handy.
Available in a range of sizes to suit various faces, the AIRism face mask rocks a 3-tier build. The first layer sports the AIRism fabric – used in other UNIQLO products – which helps to wick sweat away from your face. The second layer houses the washable built-in filter, while the third also benefits from the AIRism mesh to block UV rays.
With a face-conforming fit and a low price of just $15 for all three, there’s never been a better time to invest in some pandemic protection.

The GT-R name is one that immediately gets revheads hearts racing.Spun off into its own model line in 2007, the GT-R badge first appeared on the third-generation Nissan (formerly Prince) Skyline. Lovingly called the ‘Hakosuka’ by fans in reference to its boxy dimensions (hako = box in Japanese) and powered by what was essentially a Formula One engine, the ‘Hakosuka’ was an immediate success both on the track and in dealerships, and laid the groundwork for the modern GT-R legend. While the fourth-generation Skyline did see a GT-R variant, the 1973 oil crisis took a toll on the auto industry. Consumers weren’t interested in fuel-hungry performance cars any more, so Nissan shelved the GT-R. Nissan didn’t revisit the GT-R nameplate until the eighth-generation ‘R32’ Skyline – partially out of fear of diluting the GT-R’s legacy. However, the 15-year wait was worth it: the R32 Skyline GT-R is one of the most iconic sports cars of all time. It’s easy to wax lyrical about the R32 GT-R, so we’ll keep it brief. Simply put, the R32 GT-R was the undisputed touring car champion of its time, winning the Japanese Touring Car Championship a whopping 29 times in a row, topping the 1991 Spa 24 Hour in Belgium by 19 laps and winning the 1990, 1991 and 1992 Australian Touring Car Championships, as well as the 1991 and 1992 Bathurst 1000s. It was nicknamed ‘Godzilla’ by Australian journalists because it was a monster from Japan… The name went global and further cemented its reputation as the king of sports cars. The car was so dominant in Australian motorsport that it precipitated huge changes to the ATCC for the 1993 year. In what might be the ultimate sour grapes move, the rules effectively banned smaller, turbocharged imports from competing with the local V8 Holdens and Fords. The R32 GT-R was that good.Indeed, this R32 GT-R directly contributed to that. On sale in Buderim on Queensland’s Sunshine Coast, this 1990 Nissan R32 GT-R Group E Falken Bathurst 12 Hour – or as we prefer to call it, ‘the Australian Godzilla’ – might just be the coolest car to have ever graced Australian roads. We don’t say that lightly, either.

Melbourne is going through a rough patch. The Victorian city is considered the epicentre of virus cases in Australia – potentially detrimental to its chances of winning the world’s most liveable city award – but good news is on the horizon, as restrictions are set to ease from Stage 4 to Stage 3 following a drop in cases.Or at least, that’s the plan. Victoria Premier Daniel Andrews will deliver a roadmap for Victoria’s relaxation of lockdown laws on September 13th, and it’s still possible that Stage 4 restrictions will remain in place until the situation is deemed safe enough for Victoria residents to regain some of their freedom. However, if Victoria does move to Stage 3, there is still one industry that will remain off-limits: gyms and personal training. It’s a restriction that Australian fitness body Fitness Australia believes should be reconsidered immediately.Currently, health and fitness facilities in Victoria aren’t deemed to be an ‘essential’ service. Instead, they’re placed into the ‘physical recreational facilities’ category, meaning, for now, doors to everything from studios and fitness centres to boxing gyms have to remain firmly closed. Fitness Australia begs to differ, claiming the exercise and community experienced by gym-members is paramount to their mental – as well as physical – health and wellbeing.Following his comments urging the Australian government to allow safe exercise to continue during the nationwide lockdown, Fitness Australia CEO Barrie Elvish is now requesting the Victorian Government reclassify health and fitness facilities as “‘Health and Fitness Centres’ in the Restricted Activity Directions and be allowed to operate in the same way as other essential services such as Osteopathy, Physiotherapy, Dietetics and Mental Health Services.”Adding to his reasoning, Mr Elvish said, “For many people in our community, especially those managing a range of physical and mental health issues, going to the gym, completing regular sessions with a personal trainer or participating in a live virtual class are seen as an essential support service.”He goes on to question why health centres can’t reopen, yet customer service businesses, such as online order packing warehouses, can.Citing research carried out by Fitness Australia that claims there have been more than 6.26 million check-ins across 423 gyms in New South Wales since restrictions eased on the 13th June, Mr Elvish said: “during that same period there had been zero cases of reported community transmission in a gym.”
“Health and fitness centres are low risk when it comes to COVID-19 and the industry is willing to do whatever it takes to provide a safe and hygienic envrionment for members and employees.”
“Since the beginning of [the pandemic], Fitness Australia has been focused on promoting the important role the fitness industry plays in the overall health of our nation.”“We are not part of the problem; we are actually part of the solution to getting more Australians more active more often and help prevent long-term lifestyle-related disease.”It seems for now at least, until any action (if any) is taken to reclassify health and fitness facilities, Victorians will have to continue relying on food and booze to get through their stress-inducing lockdown days.
