Bearded Men Are Much Filthier Than You Think, Say Scientists
Bearded Men Are Much Filthier Than You Think, Say Scientists

Bad news, lumber sexuals. Scientists have just made the startling discovery that beards carry more germs than the fur on dogs.

According to Professor Andreas Gutzeit of Switzerland’s Hirslanden Clinic who conducted the research, there was “a significantly higher bacterial load in specimens taken from the men’s beards compared with the dogs’ fur.”

This study had originally set out to determine whether or not dog-borne diseases could be contracted by humans via an MRI scanner that was used by vets in examinations. The researchers came to their conclusion by taking swabs from 18 men’s beards and the necks of 30 dogs before comparing them. The focus group itself consisted of bearded men aged between 18 and 76 years-old – and all of them returned high microbial counts.

This was a stark contrast to the dogs that were tested in which 23 out of 30 had high microbial counts and the rest just moderate. Afraid yet? You should be. The scientists also found that half the beards contained bugs that affected human health.

“On the basis of these findings, dogs can be considered as clean compared with bearded men,” Dr. Gutzeit explained. Of course just like those who believe that the Earth is flat despite the evidence presented, there are those who will defend the beard no matter what.

Keith Flett, founder of the Beard Liberation Front, told the Daily Mail that there was reasonable doubt on the legitimacy of this latest study.

“I think it’s possible to find all sorts of unpleasant things if you took swabs from people’s hair and hands and then tested them,” he said. “I don’t believe that beards in themselves are unhygienic. There seems to be a constant stream of negative stories about beards that suggest it’s more about pogonophobia than anything else.”

For those playing at home, ‘pogonophobia’ is the extreme and irrational fear of beards. Now whether or not you believe the latest findings is up to you, but there have been past studies on this supposedly filthy problem.

In an older study conducted for news site KOAT7, microbiologist John Golobic of Quest Diagnostics randomly swabbed the beards of his test subjects and found evidence of gut bacteria  commonly found in faeces. He added that whilst the beard bacteria wasn’t likely to cause illness, it was still “a little concerning”.

Other researchers dispute this finding, saying that there’s no grounding to Golobic’s sensationalist claim as most of the bacteria on the beard can also be found on our skin. Objecting research has even gone as far as claiming that men’s facial hair may even protect them against drug-resistant infections.

Men Are Now Getting This $1,000 ‘Downstairs Makeover’ To Impress Their Dates
Men Are Now Getting This $1,000 ‘Downstairs Makeover’ To Impress Their Dates

When you find yourself typing “is it safe to inject botox into your scrotum” into Google, you know it’s been a long, droopy day.

But while gender stereotypes would have you assume women and highly-strung celebrities are the only ones getting cosmetic surgery, with Tinder increasing our competition for dates and Instagram dialling up our vanity to crazy levels, men are now getting in on the action too.

Although high rollers like Gianluca Vacchi can afford to (allegedly) buy themselves a new head of hair, there is now a more economical option to impress your date: ‘Scrotox’ injections.

Sure, men have flirted with this ‘Cinderella style’ operation in the past, but its popularity has recently spiked in Australian men who are either looking to improve their fertility, relax tight testicles or impress their dates.

As news.com.au reports, “a minority of men harbour such deep insecurities about their wrinkly scrotums they’re willing to invest substantially in their beautification.”

So, how does the $1,000 procedure work? According to Nicole Montgomery, a New South Wales-based cosmetic surgery nurse and founder of Trusted Surgeons, it’s simple.

Essentially, Botox is injected into the muscle under the skin of the ball sack (not all the way inside it), relaxing all the skin of the scrotum, which “creates a smooth-like appearance, making it appear larger and even making the testicles hang lower,” Montgomery told AusDoc.

While some men get Scrotoxed for cosmetic reasons, Dr Jayson Oates, medical director of CALIBRE Clinic, a specialty practice dedicated to medical male enhancement procedures, told news.com.au the bulk of his patients get it done because they have too-tight testicles.

“The relaxation of the scrotum helps the testes to hang a bit lower and offers some relief.”

Dr Jayson Oates

However, from as early as 2016, this has been a popular (if not widespread) vanity project, with even the most earnest ABC reporters urging Australian men to “give wrinkly scrotums the sack.”

Image: Premier Clinics

The experience of a man called Sean*, however, although ostensibly positive, highlights why the trend has been slow to gain momentum.

Generously donating his time (and testicles) to news.com.au, Sean, whose name has been changed for fairly obvious reasons, got Scrotoxed for journalism.

This is how it went down.

“After having Sean apply some numbing cream to his jiggly bits,” news.com.au reports, “Dr Oates proceeded to inject Sean’s scrotum 55 times with the muscle relaxant.”

“I think I felt maybe two little pinches… Before I knew it, it was over.”

Sean

Afterwards, Sean felt a little numb “down there” for a couple of days—but overall, not too bad. Then, a week later, “it was less wrinkly and red… fuller and smoother.”

More importantly, when Sean took his shiny new scrotum “out on the town,” he reportedly received “very positive feedback” from a female acquaintance, leading him to make the following comments.

“Going forward, I’m hoping the word will spread far and wide throughout the land and my phone will start buzzing from adventurous females who want to see.”

Sean

But although Sean dealt with the ordeal experience like a champion (and got a bunch of positive feedback), we doubt many guys will sign up to get needled 55 times in the scrotum, especially when you consider that the positive effects are only temporary.

There is a reason the surgery is ‘Cinderella-esque’; when the clock strikes 12 – or when the Scrotox wears off (at around the nine-month mark) – Sean’s plump pumpkins will turn back into dried prunes.

Also: anyone considering the procedure should understand the safety implications of what they’re getting themselves into.

As Gotham Plastic Surgery surgeon Dr Douglas S. Steinbrech told Metro last year, these types of procedures rarely go wrong. But if they do, the Botox could travel throughout your body, potentially leading to difficulty swallowing, a change in your voice, drooping of the eyelids and even respiratory problems.

But hey, if you’re willing to risk it, you could boost your chances of a second date…

Tiger Woods’ Odd Choice Of Rolex Was The Real Winner Of The Masters Tournament
Tiger Woods’ Odd Choice Of Rolex Was The Real Winner Of The Masters Tournament

If you’ve been living under a rock this weekend then you would have missed the news that Tiger Woods just won the Masters Tournament after a historic 11 year comeback. It’s a story worthy of a biographic film…but we’re not here to talk about that.

The real winner of one of the world’s biggest golfing tournaments? Woods’ high-performance Rolex Deepsea D-Blue Sea-Dweller created to honour the deep sea documentary work of James Cameron. Now the first question that comes to our mind is: “What the…?”

Golf is a prestigious sport which watchmakers like Rolex have long been associated with, but to see a bonafide diver’s watch alongside a green jacket is surprising even for us. As an ambassador for Rolex one would think Woods would have opted for something a little more…aesthetically fitting – a Rolex Daytona, Datejust or GMT, perhaps? But no.

The star of the show was a robust and chunky diver’s watch from the Crown which you can actually buy for AU$16,800. Not a bad proposition at all considering the hype surrounding all the other Rolex pieces these days. So let’s take a closer look at this marvellous diving timepiece which ironically captured the hearts of golfers today.

The Rolex Deepsea D-Blue Sea-Dweller first debuted back in 2014 but has since seen an update in 2018 along with other Sea-Dweller pieces. The most prominent feature of the watch is a blue-black gradient dial which mimics the deep sea as one descends. Following closely behind is the 3,900m water-resistant rating – not as hardcore as Cameron’s submarine which boasts a 12,000 metre depth rating but still sufficient nonetheless.

The third point worth mentioning is the fact that it’s a big watch. At 17.7mm thick, 44mm wide and 5mm of sapphire crystal over the dial, one would wonder how well it sits under the jacket cuff. Whilst the body and Oyster-style bracelet is 904L stainless steel, the titanium caseback should help with keeping off some mass.

But hey, the guy just won what’s arguably the biggest game of his career so he can wear what he damn feels. You do you Tiger, you do you.

Brisbane Barber Shops Where You’ll Find The Freshest Cuts In Australia
Brisbane Barber Shops Where You’ll Find The Freshest Cuts In Australia

Sure, Brisbane may be famous for its youthful zeal, year-round sun and smokin’ hot… pavements, but where’s a bloke to get a haircut? Fortunately, with a new crop of top barbers making waves (and fades) in Queensland’s metropolitan mecca, you no longer need to fly to Sydney or Melbourne to get a world-class cut.

Although we suffered a 1990’s follicular-hangover well into the 2000s, a glance around your local watering hole proves we’ve finally snapped out of it. It’s 2019 and, as long as you don’t go full hipster, there’s never been a more exciting time to own a scalp.

Here are the best places to kill the fuzzies and fizz your follicles in Brisbane.

Not only does each Emporium Barber location offer sublime cuts and fades, but they also make sure to serve you with a mouth-watering coffee as soon as you arrive.

General FAQ

How Much Does It Cost To Get A Haircut?

Barbershops can charge anywhere between $20 all the way up to $100 or more for a haircut. It depends on the barbershop you visit and the level of qualification the individual barber has.

Are Barbershops For Guys Only?

Barbershops used to be a haven for men to get their haircut and to pamper themselves a little. Today, women are more than welcome in barbershops, although realistically, only girls with shorter hair will want to head in.

Should I Tip My Barber?

While it isn't compulsory for you to tip your barber, giving them a few extra dollars will likely result in an even better service the next time you visit. They'll appreciate the gesture and want to look after you time and time again.
