In order to get muscle peaks the size of Everest, you need to be lifting the heaviest weight your body can muster, right? Not exactly.
Yes, being able to bench, curl or lift heavy weights will improve your strength, but you can’t expect to step foot on the gym floor and be able to smash out reps as though you were The Mountain from Game of Thrones. In order to get stronger, you need to undergo a regime known as progressive overloading.

So, what is it? Personal trainer and online fitness coach Jonas Hereora says it “means to continually increase the demands placed on your body through training.”
“The end goal is usually to improve muscle hypertrophy (muscle growth) or strength.”
https://www.instagram.com/p/B89xXQ6A0Gj/
If you’re a regular at the gym, you would have likely heard of progressive overloading before, but there’s a good chance you thought the only real way to do it is to simply increase the weight you lift. Jonas says that while this can be the case, there are actually a number of other methods you can employ to get the same end result.
He recommends training techniques such as keeping the weight the same but gradually increasing the number of reps you complete. For example, lift a 50kg bench press for 8 reps, and then the next time you workout your chest complete 9 reps, and add one more rep each time for around four weeks. Then you can add on a little bit more weight and carry out the same process again.
Jonas also suggests adding more sets into your workout; if you usually complete 3 sets, try going for 4 or 5. It could be that you’ll have to decrease the weight you usually lift, but lifting it several more times will have profound benefits for your muscle gain.
View this post on Instagram
Other techniques you can introduce to your workouts to add some variety include resting for shorter periods between sets to give your muscles less time to recover, or what’s known as ‘Myo-reps’. This is a type of rest-pause technique that aims for maximum muscle fibre activation. To complete Myo-reps, first carry out an ‘activation’ set to failure, or around 10-12 reps, rest for roughly 15 seconds while taking 4 to 5 deep breaths and then complete the first Myo-rep set to failure, usually around 6-8 reps. Rest again, complete another set and continue to do so, with 15 second rests until you can’t complete one lift without compromising your form.
Progressive overload is a strict method you need to stick to notice results, but even science can prove it works, with a 2010 study conducted by Peterson et al. taking a group of 43 males and 40 females, and getting them to gradually increase the weight lifted by their non-dominant arm. After a 12 week period in which the weight was increased every four weeks, both groups recorded an increase in whole muscle volume: 85.7mL for males and 62.4mL for females.
A more recent study carried out by researchers at the University of Lincoln, UK, took a group of experienced weightlifters and asked them to undergo percentage-based, or velocity-based training for a six week period, to see how their performance changed. Percentage-based training requires a weightlifter to lift a percentage of the maximum amount of weight they can lift. This is repeated over days and weeks to increase muscle strength.
Velocity-based training meanwhile measures the time it takes a weightlifter to lift the weight. The PBT group carried out training as they normally would, while the VBT group could have their weight decreased or increased, depending on how quickly they could lift. If they struggled one day, the weight would be reduced, if they were able to lift as quickly on one day as the previous, their weight would be increased.
The VBT group lifted less weight over the course of the study, but researchers found their performance improved more than the PBT group. Dr Harry Dorrell “It’s about making sure the athlete is lifting the optimal load for them on that particular day,”
“If you lift too little, then you won’t stimulate the body as you intend to, but if you lift too much, you’ll be fatigued, which increases the risk of injury.”
So if you’re not seeing an increase in size in your arms or chest, try introducing some new techniques to get over the plateau and activate your muscles. You’ll be making gains in no time.

Christian Bale: caught on tape launching an expletive-filled tirade against a crew member on the Terminator Salvation set.Alec Baldwin: exposed calling his 11-year-old daughter “a rude, thoughtless little pig” in a leaked voicemail.Robert Downey, Jr: unhireable after a combination of drug addiction, alcohol abuse, multiple arrests, a prison stint, and rehab. All three: still highly bankable stars beloved by Hollywood. How’d they come back from incidents that should have been career suicide?
Assess The Situation
Before you make any moves, you have to know what you’re dealing with. Take an honest look at what areas of your life have been affected, how serious the damage is, and what role you may have played. Is this a case of hurt feelings or actual reputation damage? Try to see the situation from an outsider’s perspective, and don’t jump to conclusions.Once you have a clearer picture of the circumstances, separate what you can control from what you can’t. You can’t control what people think or say about you, but you can control your own actions. Focus your efforts where you can take positive, effective steps. Don’t waste energy on things that are out of your hands anyway.
Ask For Feedback
Still not sure about exactly what happened and who’s at fault? Get a second opinion from a few trusted allies who can provide a more balanced viewpoint on the circumstances – including what you may have done to exacerbate the situation, and what you need to do to fix it. A bystander’s objective point of view can offer crucial perspective on your personality and the issue at hand, as well as constructive advice for moving forward. You may also want to ask an especially close confidant to act as your accountability partner. They will hold you accountable for your behaviour as you take steps to rebuild your reputation, and be a constant reminder of who you are working to be.
Start Damage Control ASAP
If you conclude that your reputation is indeed in need of a tune-up, start the process as soon as possible. Minimising the damage early will help eliminate the obstacles to getting back on track. Use your assessment and your friends’ feedback to create a damage control plan. Start by breaking down what your “bad reputation” is into elements, then write a list of actions that will help you repair each one.For example, if you’ve become known as a slacker at work, your action steps may include setting earlier alarms to arrive on time, taking on extra tasks to show you’re not shirking responsibility, answering emails more promptly, turning in reports before they’re due, and volunteering to do a coffee run for your colleagues. The quicker you can get in front of the situation, the less time it has to snowball.
Clear Up Any Misunderstandings
In some cases, a sullied reputation is based on gossip, lies, and misinformation. If you are innocent of the charges levied against you, start your public damage control campaign by clearing up any misunderstandings. Privately approach the people who have been spreading untruths, explain the situation, and ask that they stop. Then speak with other people affected by the rumours. Be frank when you address the issue, and calm, respectful, and genuinely concerned when you express your desire to move forward. If you shy away from verbally addressing the problem, hoping it will magically disappear, you let people’s imaginations run wild and give the rumours free-range.
Own Up & Make Amends
Though it’s painful to admit it, there are times when a blemished reputation is rightfully earned. You may in fact have been in the wrong, and through the combination of honest self-reflection and constructive feedback from friends, have realised your mistake.Begin to repair the damage by owning up to your behaviour and making amends to anyone you’ve wronged. Admit your mistakes, apologise, and ask for forgiveness. Most importantly, offer a way to make things right. Saying “I’m sorry for not paying back the money I owe” is nowhere near as powerful as an apology accompanied by a good-faith payment, even if it’s not the full amount. Taking an action step proves you’re sincere in your efforts to improve the situation. As difficult as it is to fess up, it shows you’re a man of integrity and character, and if nothing else, you should be respected for your courage in taking responsibility.
Spread Positivity
With the initial hard work of honesty and communication out of the way, it’s time to begin the next phase of your reputation repair plan. Blast through the cloud of negativity surrounding you with an all-out assault of positivity.Consider the ways, both big and small, you can be an encouraging presence. Show gratitude. Give sincere compliments. Lend a helping hand. Volunteer for a good cause. Keep complaints and criticisms about others in check. The more good deeds you do, the better you’ll feel, and the more likely other people will be to take notice. But beware: at first, people may think you’re desperate or overcompensating for your bad behaviour. This isn’t a quick fix. You must do good deeds repeatedly, over an extended period of time, without demanding acknowledgement for them, in order for your reputation to improve. Consistency is essential to getting your rep on solid ground again.
Let Your Actions Speak
A good reputation is maintained by your efforts. Spreading positivity is one important effort you can make, but it’s far from the only one. Brainstorm other ways to make yourself worthy of a return to people’s good graces.Immediately cease any damaging behaviours, like gossiping or excessive drinking, that bruised your reputation in the first place (or stand to hurt it further). Consider changing up your social circle if the people you surround yourself with are contributing to your problems. Don’t gossip or badmouth anyone behind their back. Over-deliver at work and in your personal life. Take a break from social media if your digital life has played a role in the poor opinion of your character.Everyone will be watching you a bit more closely after you experience a ding to your reputation, so do your best work and make it difficult to hold a grudge against you.
Reinvent Yourself
Imagine a future self who is highly-regarded and free from the stain of negative perception. How does that man behave? What values does he live by? What actions and traits is he respected for? Set goals for yourself based on this future you, and judge all actions based on whether they are in accordance with that vision. If something is not in alignment with the new-and-improved man you’re working to be, think seriously before doing or saying it.With luck, others will take notice of your sincere efforts to grow, and re-evaluate their view of you as a result. And even if they don’t, you can feel secure in the knowledge that you’re evolving into a better, stronger, kinder, wiser man.

Buying a second-hand car could either be the best or worst decision of your life. On one side of the road is the wheels of your dreams, scooped at a bargain. On the other? Heartache and a leaky bank account.
A longtime public transport advocate sufferer, I recently bought my first ever car. Throughout my Gumtree ordeal, Carsales quackery and latest $1,800 trip to the mechanic (a grand total of two weeks after purchasing it), I now feel qualified to pass judgement on the whole process of buying a second-hand car.
Here’s everything I learnt – what no one tells you about buying a second-hand car in Australia.
You spend more time looking than buying
I spent my first few weeks looking at cars that weren’t right for me, wasting three valuable weekends in the process.
I also didn’t know what I was looking for at this point, and so key details I should have been able to check in real-time I found myself asking via text later.
I also forgot to check the VIN. Always check the VIN.
The same goes for windows, air-con and hazard lights.
Kilometres are key
Create a plan and stick to it: work out your budget, then ask someone who knows about cars (ideally a friend who is also a second-hand car salesperson) what a fair amount of kilometres is for a car at that price.
Then, don’t waste your time looking at cars out of that range (or that you don’t think you could negotiate into it).
The logbook is your best friend
If the glove box is just a bunch of loose receipts, forget it.
Test driving other peoples’ cars is a risky business
Don’t curb someone else’s car unless you’re prepared to pay them $60 (or spend the rest of the week feeling guilty).
When they tell you, “it got keyed by workmen,” it means “I’ve been careless with my car”
Sure enough: when I checked underneath this car which was advertised as “shabby exterior” but impeccable mechanical condition, it had a puddle of oil the size of Lake Macquarie underneath.
If someone is half an hour late, it tells you all you need to know about them
Get outta there.
If someone is pressuring you to buy…
Also, get out of there.
If something seems too good to be true, it is
As I discovered when the 2010 Subaru Forester with significantly less kilometres than all the others in my price range turned out to be unregistered, in a different suburb to the one it was advertised in and being sold “for a friend of a friend”, if something seems too good to be true, it probably is.
Don’t bother with unregistered vehicles
Major red flag. Also, too hard.
The pre-inspection hurts… but is worth it
This is where you lose a bit of power to gain a bit of power. If you get a pre-purchase inspection the seller knows you have committed $400 to their cause. However, it also helps you negotiate from an informed standpoint (especially if you know nothing about cars).
Obviously, if you’re buying a second-hand car over 10k, getting it pre-inspected is a no brainer. However, if you are buying something on the cheap many people say it’s not worth paying $400, which can be up to a quarter of the car’s entire value, just to get it checked by the NRMA.
I felt like I had wasted a lot of money with my pre-inspection until they found up to AU$1,000 of problems I hadn’t factored into my negotiations, leaving me in a much better position to bargain.
Throw tactics back at ’em
When it actually comes to buying the car, you can throw the seller’s “we have someone else coming to see it tomorrow” tactics back at them by offering a price and saying “this offer is good for 24 hours.”
Get your parking permit before you buy
The same goes for insurance.

What would you do for a surfer’s body? And I don’t mean pretending to like superfoods so you can sleep with Laird Hamilton, or putting on a vegan act to woo Tia Blanco; I mean what would you do to transform yourself into a lust-worthy machine?
The answer? Anything but the gym.
Most of us are willing to follow fitness gurus and nutrition coaches on Instagram. But precious few have the time or motivation to hit the gym on a regular basis, or the money to hire an F45 trainer to yell us into submission shape.
When we do hit the gym though, many people do isolated exercises in a repetitious way, most likely wearing shoes and often using smith machines.
Current World Champion surfer Italo Ferreira, however, recently (and unintentionally) gave any ailing ab owners a tip on getting their arse into gear and building some long term strength of their own, with his latest workout, posted to Instagram last week.
That tip? Working out in bare feet. While this is against your average Anytime’s policy, if you can find somewhere to get your sweat on au natural (podiatry speaking), you could see your micro-stabilising muscles and coordination increase, injury rates decrease and overall gains and strength increase (if continued over time).
Combine this with compound exercises, a la Italo, and – all going well – you’ll get less injured and build more long term strength than you would have otherwise.
Another tip you can take from Italo is his high rep low(ish) weight approach (as suggested by his 14kg dumbells), which helps you build the sort of ‘surfer’ shoulders that stick around even as the rest of your body becomes emaciated (or bloated) as you rave your way through summer.
Not sold? Italo’s stablemate (and two-time World Champion) Gabriel Medina suggests this is the case too, working out in a similar vein to Italo (barefoot and with relatively light weights) and showing you how to build a physique that can survive a summer of partying with Neymar.
It won’t get you jacked like Ross Edgley, but it will (we reckon) help your washboard abs will last a bit longer, on those occasions when you do let things slide.
Good times await.

After the twelfth hour of sliding down your economy seat (reclined to the max, but still not enough to stay in place) we’ve all had that moment of ‘genius’ where we thought: why don’t they have Economy sleep pods?
Pay $50, get two hours’ sleep. Simple, right? Wrong. Or at least – no airline has had the fuel in their veins to try it. Until now: Air New Zealand this morning unveiled the lie-flat economy salvation you’ve been waiting for.
A room of six beds that can be booked throughout the flight by economy passengers. In other words: The Economy Skynest or “the result of three years of Air New Zealand research and development… [and] the input of more than 200 customers.”
Currently, on show at its Hangar 22 innovation centre in Auckland, the airline has today filed patent and trademark applications for the Economy Skynest which provides six full-length lie-flat sleep pods.
Air New Zealand Chief Marketing and Customer Officer Mike Tod says that as the airline operates some of the world’s longest flights, such as the upcoming Auckland-New York service at up to 17 hours 40 minutes one way, it is committed to putting more magic back into flying.
“We have a tremendous amount of development work underway looking at product innovations we can bring across all cabins of the aircraft. A clear pain point for economy travellers on long-haul flights is the inability to stretch out. The development of the Economy Skynest is a direct response to that challenge,” Mr Tod says.

According to today’s press release, Air New Zealand will make a final decision on whether to operate the Economy Skynest next year “after it has assessed the performance of its inaugural year of Auckland-New York operations.”
General Manager of Customer Experience, Nikki Goodman says customer and cabin crew feedback on the Economy Skynest during its final phase of development has been outstanding with significant partners also keenly involved.
“We see a future flying experience where an economy-class customer on long-haul flights would be able to book the Economy Skynest in addition to their Economy seat, get some quality rest and arrive at their destination ready to go. This is a game-changer on so many levels,” Ms Goodman says.
“We’re so excited to be sharing this product development with our customers. This is one of the highlights of three years’ intensive work centred on customer wellbeing. We’re sure this innovation is going to be a game-changer for the industry and bring significant improvements to long-haul flying.”
“We expect other airlines will want to explore licensing the Economy Skynest from us just as they have with the Economy Skycouch.”
Air New Zealand’s Head of Airline Programmes Kerry Reeves says ‘can do’ is one of the airline’s key values and the Economy Skynest prototype is a tangible example of this.
“At Air New Zealand, we continue to nurture a can-do attitude, we’re not afraid of being bold and trying new things. The question is never ‘can we do this’ but instead ‘is it right to do this for our customers?’ and, if so, ‘how will we do this?’”
“Our ability to take a good idea, to execute and deliver an innovation that works in our environment, our market and for our people and customers gives us an edge.”
Corny as it sounds, we’ll suffer any amount of marketing fluff if it means getting a decent kip in Economy.

Mr Reeves also added that the scale of the challenge in developing the Economy Skynest and working through its certification with the necessary regulators is immense compared with the development of the Economy Skycouch.
“But it was a prize worth chasing and one that we think has the potential to be a game changer for economy class travellers on all airlines around the world.”
As for the likely costs and routes, Air New Zealand will determine these once they have finished assessing the commercial proposition and viability of this product.
Fingers crossed it comes through.

What would you do for the watch of your dreams? Work in the mines for 6 months? Sell organs on the dark web? Pawn your wife’s wedding ring?
We’ve all got a price.
If you have a net worth of 40 million, however, like Travis Scott, you simply purchase one. Enter: last night’s Houston Rockets vs. New York Knicks game, where Travis Scott sat courtside in an outfit as cool as his rap.
View this post on Instagram
The Astroworld producer was in attendance at the Toyota Center as the Houston Rockets paid tribute to him with his very own bobblehead night.
In celebration, he combined a $2,500 Dior jacket, a $250,000 Richard Mille and limited-edition Nikes (which go for up to $30,000 on the resale market) with $92 cargo pants (from whoisjacov). He also wore his skate hat and signature bling.

While the Rockets beat the Knicks 123-112, in our eyes Scott won the game by mastering the colour most men fail to pull off, and showing you how to match your watch strap with the rest of your outfit.
Comments on Upscale Hype’s Instagram page (where the photo was re-posted) show some people agree (“loving the brown”), while others just took the chance to take gratuitous potshots (“most overrated rapper ever”).
Whatever your stance on his vocals, Scott’s watch is an easy on the eye Richard Mille, which appears to be the Felipe Massa Boutique Edition Rose Gold Automatic 49MM Chronograph RM011 with a brown strap.
This limited 50-piece edition from Richard Mille defies convention of the RM011 we all know, and for the juicy technical details let us turn to the manufacturers themselves: “The striking Asia Boutique RM011 has a tonneau-shaped, ceramic brown case with a rose gold case band which is 50 x 42mm in dimension and 16.15mm thick with a sapphire crystal, a rose gold crown and finishing and 20 grade 5 titanium spline screws.”
“The dial is skeletonized and features three sub-dials, a date and a month window with Arabic numeral hour markers in white finishing. The Asia Boutique RM011 is powered by the self-winding RMAC1 caliber which with adjustable rotor geometry, chronograph, date and moth functionality with a 50-hour limit power reserve.”
“The case is paired with a black rubber bracelet [which presumably can be changed for brown] that has a titanium double fold-over clasp. It has a water resistance of 50 meters (164 feet).”
Interest piqued? The watch is quite rare, so if you’re interested you’ll need to contact Richard Mille directly for pricing and availability (though a little sleuthing on our part found similar models are going second hand for up to $296,005 on Chrono 24).
Happy hunting.

We say Australian cars, but some were never made here but simply defined our culture. Besides the obligatory backyard barbecue, how else does a man celebrate this great sun-kissed land? With cars of course.
1975 Holden Sandman
Who can dispute this iconic panel van which was intended for stacking surfboards but was instead used by people for other “leisurely” purposes – giggity. The Sandman is a true symbol of Aussie culture that went after the younger market of the day with its bold graphics, sports instrumentation, bucket seats and wheels sourced from the Monaro. The car quickly became a modifier’s dream as well with the hordes of psychedelic dudes customising the Sandman with inspiring paint jobs. Under the bonnet you could choose a 4.2 litre or 5.0 litre V8.
Chrysler Valiant R Series
What’s with the American car you say? The Valiant made a huge impact on the Australian motoring scene during its debut from 1962. As well as oozing heaps of retro American style, the Chrysler was a genuine competitor to the EK Holden of the time, offering up more options and better performance at a similar price point. It was also highly compatible with Australia’s rugged driving conditions which in turn made it one of the most popular sedans for the average Joe. It is powered by a 225-cid slant six making 145bhp.
JPS BMW 635 CSi Coupe
A German car as an Aussie icon? Now we’re just just trolling. But really, this particular BMW is one deserving of a spot. Adorned with the famed black and gold John Player Special livery, the 635 coupe was piloted by veteran race car driver Jim Richards in 1985 to victory. It absolutely dominated the Australian Touring Car Championship and Australian Endurance Championship that year but not before ruffling up some controversy along the way with allegations of cheating, German favouritism and team sabotage. Who doesn’t like a good biff? The 635 CSi was powered by a 3.5 litre 6 cylinder that made a reported 390hp.
Holden HK Monaro GTS 327 Bathurst
The Monaro moniker is a true Aussie icon in itself. Given that, there’d easily be a serious contention of variants over the vehicle’s lifetime to mull over. Our pick however is the GTS 327 Bathurst edition. This race prepped version of the hard-top Kingswood sedan uses the same small-block V8 found in the Corvette, a move that would start a tradition that continues long into the modern incarnations of the Monaro. All performance specs were lifted in the GTS 327 with 250hp, proper fat stabiliser bars and LSD. Even the fuel tank size was increased to account for track time.
1967 Ford Falcon XR GT
The 1967 Ford Falcon XR GT easily takes the bacon as the car that started the blood war between two of Australia’s most iconic car makers. Upon its arrival on Aussie shores, the car was essentially a V8 Mustang in sedan form. On the mountain roads of Bathurst however is where the XR GT truly stamped its authority on our soil, finishing first and second in the Bathurst 500 race whilst angering the Holden camp and marking the beginning of the two’s legendary rivalry.
Holden VK Group A Commodore
If you haven’t noticed, we absolutely love the word ‘homologation’ here. What that means in car speak is that in order for a maker to race in a particular series, they have to release a limited number of road going version of that vehicle onto the market. Enter the 1985 HDT VK Group A – a collaboration between Holden and legendary race driver Peter Brock which takes race inspired design onto the public roads. 500 were ordered to be built but due to a mix up, 502 made it out of the factory. Set in striking Formula Blue, the V8 was destroked to 4.9 litre to meet Group A racing regulations, pinning power at 196kW.
1979 Mazda RX-7
Although not as popular as some other vehicles on the list, the rotary engine has undoubtedly earned an iconic place in Australian motoring history that continues until today. With numerous contentions at Bathurst and a slew of other Aussie tracks, the RX-7 first came to fame in this country with race car driver Allan Moffat in 1979. After Moffat’s team lost the official support of Ford, Mazda Australia approached him about campaigning a vehicle for the Australian Touring Car Championships. Moffat tested a running version in the U.S, saw its potential and the rest was history. The car runs a 1.3-litre 13B rotary engine along with the gorgeous Group C bodykit.
Datsun 200B SX
Ask any Aussie dad about the cars of their generation and they’ll laugh and tell you either good or bad things about the iconic ‘Datto’. Rarely glamorous and more like the Toyota Corolla of the day, the Datsun 200B quickly became the P-plater weapon of choice for many Aussies in the late 70s. What you could not dispute however was its bullet proof reliability and odd ability to keep speeding hoons under the speed limit due to its almighty 2-litre 72kW motor. The SX variant which you see above is a more refined version that addressed things like ride comfort, interior finish and sportier aesthetics.
Gibson Nissan R32 GTR
This one vehicle is a given and even has a colourful backstory to go with it. Amidst the bloody war going on between Holden and Ford in Group A racing in 1990, Gibson Motorsport decided to join the party with their 2.6-litre, 6-cylinder Skyline GTR with all wheel drive. They eventually decimated their competition over the next two years and were required to run with a weight handicap so that the field could keep up. In the famed 1992 Bathurst 1000 race, driver Jim Richards famously called the heckling fans a “pack of arseholes” after a controversial win. Can you get any Aussier than that?
1978 Holden Torana SLR 5000
The Holden Torana came in many trims and the one we’ll always salivate over most is the SLR 5000 variant. Made to accommodate even bigger V8 engines, the SLR 5000 came on its own in terms of wild slot-car body style and wide fender flares. The colour combination also made this particular Torana a highly sought after model. Out of the box you get 179kW and 427Nm of wheel frying torque.
Australian Automobiles FAQ
In its heyday, Australia car manufacturing was ranked one the highest in the world, with the most iconic brands being Holden, FPV, Toyota Australia, HSV and Elfin. Currently, there are over 50 different car manufacturers in Australia. The country actually offers more makes of cars than either the United States or Great Britain. In 2019, SUVs, or Sports Utility Vehicles were the top selling type of vehicle in Australia with 45.5% of the total sales, followed by passenger vehicles. What are the most iconic Australian car brands?
