The Rock Reveals The Gym Mentality That Got Him Huge
The Rock Reveals The Gym Mentality That Got Him Huge

Everyone is guilty of doing dumb things to impress people. There are whole youtube videos dedicated to broadcasting how wrong these things can go.

Think about this the next time you’re in the gym. How many people do you see putting too much weight on the bar in order to impress their mates. Maybe you do it yourself but the loud grunts as you push your body beyond its limits is impressing no-one and may even be hindering your results.

If you let your ego get in the way of your lifting then it will impact on how much you can lift. But don’t take it from us, take it from one of the world’s fittest men. Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson has a training and eating regime that many men try to emulate because it gets results. The man has only gotten bigger and stronger as he ages, so if there is anyone to try and copy it’s him. One way to do that is to lift achievable weights because The Rock, believes in leaving the ego at the door in order to achieve success.

The Rock’s philosphy is backed up by science too according to online fitness coach Leslie Hooper. Leslie told her Instagram followers that too often men add what she labelled ‘vanity weight’ to a bar which resulted in over lifting and this was where they run into problems. By over lifting men were sacrificing results by not achieving a full range of motion. As she says “If you’re not executing a FULL range of motion at a slow and controlled pace throughout the entire movement, you’re not getting the most out of your exercise.”

Muscles grow by adding more tension not by just pilling on the weights because your muscles have no concept of the specific weight that is being lifted, only the tension it creates says Leslie. Adding more weights does increase tension but if the sacrifice to do so is your range then it’s not worth it.

Executing a full movement without the extra weight may not look as tough but in the long run it will mean better results. So as Leslie says:

“Leave your ego at the door and reduce the weight. No one cares how much you’re lifting.”

Dropping the weights doesn’t mean you drop the intensity though. The Rock didn’t get to where he is by not pushing himself. But it’s about not sacrificing form because your ego believes you can bench press double your body weight. It’s about not injuring yourself because an extra plate on the squat rack looks better.

Next time you’re at the gym just have a think about The Rock’s philosophy. If you’re adding weights for vanity, then take it down a notch. Lift what you can with full range and you’ll achieve greater success.

Daniel Craig May No Longer Be Retiring As 007; Here’s Why
Daniel Craig May No Longer Be Retiring As 007; Here’s Why

Daniel Craig may have recently appeared exhausted during the filming of No Time To Die – but evidence suggests his time as 007 may not be coming to an end as soon as we all thought.

Yes: The Most Muscular Bond has said No Time To Die is his curtain call (even making an emotional farewell speech to the cast and crew). But let us not forget Craig also said he would “rather slash [his] wrists” than play 007 again back in 2015, and that was before No Time To Die was a glint in Fukunaga’s eye.

He also said (in 2015) he’ll keep playing Bond “as long as I’m physically able.” Which makes comments from Barbara Broccoli, Naomie Harris and Craig himself – which Express.co.uk reported earlier this week – even more interesting.

But first: context. Considering No Time To Die is broadly accepted as Daniel Craig’s swan song, how can we question it? Well, given the circumstances, quite easily – Craig wants to go out on a high and after the (relative) letdown that was Spectre (when compared to the highly acclaimed Skyfall) he won’t want to leave his legacy hanging.

To that end: the “creative differences” that caused director Danny Boyle and his screenwriter partner John Hodge to bail on No Time To Die (which resulted in Cary Fukunaga coming in as replacement director), if they result in an in-any-way-inferior script – or a movie which doesn’t get critical acclaim – Craig may be tempted to remain Bond until he films a showstopper.

“What became of the script is not exactly clear,” Express.co.uk reported on Tuesday, also observing that when No Time To Die made it’s April live reveal, Craig seemed unsure about the movie being his fifth and final.”

“Sounding coy, the now 51-year-old answered: ‘Maybe’… Before quietly adding: ‘Yeah no it is.'”

So: could Daniel Craig make Bond 26 if No Time To Die turns out to be more Spectre than Skyfall?

Moneypenny star Naomie Harris says yes, telling The Independent, “It’s still open – who knows? Genuinely I think he doesn’t know. Nobody does.”

“It depends on this film and if people turn out and are like, ‘We want Daniel’ – which I think they will – then he may well be back for another one.”

Meanwhile, Bond producer Barbara Broccoli seems to want Craig to continue beyond No Time To Die, with Express.co.uk reporting Good Morning Britain’s Ross King as saying, “When I was asking her about it [being Daniel’s final Bond film], she said, ‘I’m in complete denial.’”

“She [Barbara] is a very powerful lady, as we all know… Maybe don’t count out the fact that he might come back for just one more.”

The plot thickens.

The Exclusive Suite That You Can Only Access In The American Express Sydney Lounge
The Exclusive Suite That You Can Only Access In The American Express Sydney Lounge

American Express has unveiled its deluxe new lounge for customers flying through Sydney Airport offering some Australian first features. From next week, American Express customers travelling through Sydney’s International Terminal will be able to access the new premium lounge – that is three times the size of the old one – and experience business class luxury without even stepping on a plane.

The current lounge opened in December 2014, but due to its popularity, American Express has upgraded to the new space that will offer an exclusive dining area and even live cooking stations. There is – of course – a full-service bar that includes a selection of cocktails and both international and domestic beer options.

Naturally, the American Express instagram wall Green Wall will have a place in the lounge alongside other standard lounge features like free Wi-Fi, charging stations and flight information screens. But what sets the new lounge apart from the old one is the shower suites.

The new American Express lounge will offer three shower suites so you can refresh yourself on a layover or even relax after battling Sydney traffic to make it to the airport on time. Each suite comes complete with L’Occitane en Provence products to ensure you will be the most refreshed and best smelling guy at the pointy end of the plane.

Lounges are a big deal and according to Vice President of Brand, Charge Cards and Experience at American Express A/NZ Naysla Edwards they are the most valued benefit for card members. Naysla said travellers deserved a stress-free environment before flying and they would have that with this new space.

“Opening this new, spacious and convenient American Express Lounge at Sydney Airport is part of our ongoing commitment to provide our card members with premium travel benefits, exceptional hospitality and best-in-class facilities and experiences.”

The Sydney Airport lounge is part of American Express’ broader Global Lounge Collection, which offers Platinum and Centurion Card Members access to over 1,200 airport lounges around the world. The new lounge will be open to card members on October the 23rd 2019 and is located near Gates 50-63 in Sydney Airport’s T1 International terminal.

Fitness Coach Reveals Sleep Pattern That Could Significantly Increase Your Gains
Fitness Coach Reveals Sleep Pattern That Could Significantly Increase Your Gains

Hold up, gents: we all know sleep deprivation can reduce muscle growth – but did you know dozing too much can also inhibit progress? In this world of online fitness gurus and eight-week programs sometimes it’s hard to discern fact from fiction. Not to mention: opening Instagram and thumbing past several sets of conflicting advice (all in the same minute) can leave you more confused than enlightened.Enter: Peter O Reilly, a fitness coach who does not sway with trends. Instead, Peter uses scientific data to guide his advice. To that end, Peter recently posted a graphic to Instagram which everyone – whether you’re an insomniac office worker, a carb-backloading gym-junkie or a layabout student – should take note of, if you want to achieve your muscle-building potential. The ideal way to sleep for maximum fat loss and muscle gain. While the popular belief seems to be that ‘six hours is basically fine’ and ‘anything over eight is awesome’ neither of those statements are true; if you want to achieve peak fitness, sleeping for as close to eight hours as possible appears to be your best option.

A post shared by Peter O Reilly FRCms P.T. 🇮🇪 (@p.t.pete) on

“A study carried out in 2010 investigated the effects of sleep duration on body composition in people that maintain a moderate caloric deficit,” Peter captioned the post. “The researchers found that sleeping 8 hours per day results in more fat loss and muscle preservation when compared to sleeping only 5 hours per day.”So far so intuitive.Things then got interesting, when Peter pointed out that, “The research found… a significant difference between the two groups’ results as the group that slept for 8 hours lost on average 50% more fat than the group sleeping for just 5 hours.”Not only that but, as Peter reveals, “More recent [2018] research supports [the idea that] sleep restriction tends to negatively affect muscle preservation and fat loss while on a fat loss diet.”

“So… getting an adequate amount of sleep is more important than you think! It’s best to aim for at least 7 hours and no more than 10!”

In other words, be careful with how long you sleep, especially if you are on a low-fat diet.

Stephen Curry Spotted Wearing Controversial ‘Custom’ Goyard x Vans Sneakers
Stephen Curry Spotted Wearing Controversial ‘Custom’ Goyard x Vans Sneakers

If you’re in the public spotlight and earning millions of dollars you’d probably make sure not to get caught out wearing any controversial items. If you can afford the real deal then why play around with the potential fakes, that’s what regular people go to markets in Asia for. However, it seems American sports stars care little about such things.Only last month, NFL player Odell Beckham Jr. was caught wearing a fake Richard Mille and now basketballer Stephen Curry has been spotted with questionable Vans Sneakers. The Golden State Warriors player was in LA with wife Ayesha when he was seen sporting ‘custom’ Christopher Wanton-designed Goyard x Vans sneakers. The sneakers had the classic Goyard red leather print on the toe cap with the classic Vans stripe running down the side of the shoe. The shoes are a massive step up from the classic tattered black vans that you see boys wearing to the skate park. However, these are a little bit more expensive than your typical vVns.The Christopher Wanton-designed shoes sell on the internet’s second-hand stores under the label Goyard X Vans for anything from $300 to $1,000. But neither Goyard or Vans has officially created them. Instead, they are a creation of Wanton’s, who has nothing to do with either brand and that has landed him in deep water. The designer is apparently being sued by Goyard for millions due to his ‘unofficial products’. Take it with a grain of salt though, this is the Internet and there has been no official word from either Christoper or Goyard about the alleged lawsuit. But apparently the issue stems from Christopher not using real Goyard leather and the brand was unaware that he was making these creations.

It hasn’t stopped the shoe being popular online so Stephen Curry may have just got caught up in the hype and bought the shoe because they looked good. They do perfectly match the sports star’s Under Armour jacket which has flashes of red running through the middle and sides. It is not one from Stephen Curry’s collaboration with Under Armour but the slim-fitting shirt is a stylish activewear choice by the star.Stephen has recently been the subject of conversations in the NBA given the point guard players’ health. The aging star’s ankle took him out of 50 games over the past two seasons and has been a source of concern for The Warriors. The team has invested in the aging player though by purchasing all manner of amenities of which Curry’s favourite is reportedly the sleep pods. The NBA star is set to play in the pre-season match against the LA Lakers on Thursday the 17th US time. So time will tell if he is still fighting fit.

‘World First’ Qantas 747 Makeover Could Change The Future Of Travel
‘World First’ Qantas 747 Makeover Could Change The Future Of Travel

The Wright Brothers. The Concorde. Virtual reality touch screens. Engineering breakthroughs don’t happen as often as world-savvy travellers might like. However, after spending 19 years (and 90,000 hours) soaring passengers around the globe, an iconic Qantas 747 is about to get a facelift that could contribute to the next big one.

This comes as Qantas announces this historic 747, which flew its last commercial journey on Sunday, would enjoy a different kind of retirement: instead of being scrapped for parts, the Boeing 747-400 (one of the airline’s six remaining original jumbos to be phased out over the next 12 months) will become a test vehicle for Rolls Royce’s aerospace division in the US.

This will be done, News.com.au reports, by replacing all 364 passenger seats with cutting edge testing devices to monitor “engines that will form the next generation of both commercial and business aircraft in a ‘world first’ makeover.”

“This will be the most advanced engine flying testbed research and development laboratory in the world,” AeroTEC chief executive Lee Human told News.com.au.

“This is a special missions aeroplane with a dedicated purpose.”

“Rolls-Royce selected the plane because of the altitudes and the speeds it has to travel at… Not many aircraft can do what the 747 can do as for altitude and speed so for that reason it’s the only one out there (for this job),” Human added.

So what exactly is the testing going to involve? While Rolls-Royce, the second-largest maker of aircraft engines (a highly competitive industry), was understandably cagey, Rolles-Royce director of development and experimental engineering Gareth Hedicker told News.com.au, “It will allow us to test our very latest technologies while increasing our efficiency, reducing emissions and noise.”

“An aircraft like this let’s us do this. Our plan will be to use it for the next 15 years contributing to the future of travel… [Which] will allow us to keep pushing our technologies further … taking our engines to the next level.”

This Boeing 747-400, registered as VH-OJU and named ‘Lord Howe Island’, flew its final Qantas flight yesterday from Los Angeles to Moses Lake in Washington where it was handed over to Rolls-Royce. As 9 News reports, “[This] followed its last commercial flight from Sydney to Los Angeles, on Sunday.”

“This really is the end of one era and the start of another,” said Qantas CEO Alan Joyce of the change. “The jumbo has been the backbone of Qantas International for more than 40 years and we’ve flown almost every type that Boeing built.”

“Over the years, each new version of the 747 allowed Qantas to fly further and improve what we offered passengers. The Dreamliners are now doing the same thing. The 787 has better economics and a longer range, and it has already opened up new routes like Perth to London.”

Here’s hoping the testing on the old Queen of the Skies will lead to even more breakthroughs.

Australians Miss Out On The Health Benefits Of Alcohol Due To Drinking Culture
Australians Miss Out On The Health Benefits Of Alcohol Due To Drinking Culture

We’re all a bit too harsh on alcohol it would seem. Yes, it can cause some pretty serious issues like liver disease, high blood pressure and of course it can trigger violent outbursts. But some are arguing that drinking guidelines should be changed because they don’t take into account the health benefits of drinking. The industry body, Alcohol Beverages Australia, is claiming that the guidelines for alcohol need to change to include the positive impacts of drinking. The lobby group in a submission to the National Health and Medical Research Council claimed the benefits include “a reduction in the risk of development of heart disease, reduced risk of stroke and reduced risk of diabetes.”There are studies to support all of these claims. The University of Cambridge found moderate levels of alcohol can boost levels of good cholesterol in the blood which would have a protective effect for the heart. A Swedish and British research team found light or moderate levels of drinking would reduce the risk of an ischemic (blocked blood flow to brain) stroke and a Danish study found that moderate drinking lowered the risk of diabetes in both males and females. There are even studies that have found it could even improve brain cells. The keyword here in all of those studies is moderate. Something that historically Australians have not been good at. The country has a binge-drinking culture with 44% of the country admitting they drink to get drunk. Drinking to get drunk – or binge drinking – is still a big problem in Australia and it means many of the health benefits of drinking do not apply to Aussies. Binge drinking may still be a problem because very few Australians can acuately correctly identify the safe number of standard drinks. In fact, 79% of Aussies believe consuming six to 10 standard drinks on a typical occasion was responsible. Want to have a guess at how wrong that is?The current Australian guidelines state that two standard drinks per day are safe and no more than four standard drinks in a single session. For perspective that’s no more than four schooners in a single session – or two pints – which seems low. However if we stuck to those we would get all the health benefits of alcohol and none of the negative side effects. In the US the low-risk drinking is the equivalent of 5.6 Australian standard drinks per day for men and the World Health Organisation’s definition of heavy drinking is the equivalent of six standard drinks. By those measures, the Australian guidelines do seem pretty harsh. The ABA is of the opinion that Australians attitude to drinking is changing and that the harsh guidelines are “no longer in touch with the Australian lifestyle”.Redditors are divided on the issue with one Redditor calling on the alcohol industry to pay for the damage of their products and then see if they want to relax the guidelines to allow further consumption.

“If the alcohol industry had to pay for the damage their products cause this country, they’d be less willing to increase our consumption rates.”

A common theme on the Reddit thread was that Australia still had a problem with binge drinking and until Australians learnt to change that the guidelines needed to remain.

“Until this country conquers its drinking problem the guidelines should probably remain”

Those in favour of the guidelines refuted this saying that over-regulation had caused a binge-drinking culture.

“A lot of the culture around binge drinking in Australia is as a result of over regulation. I doubt there are many if any examples in history where restrictions like, for example the old 6pm deadline, didn’t result in a binge while you can culture.”

Changing the guidelines probably won’t change drinking habits as most people can’t even identify what the guidelines are. However, it may be time that we start looking at our brothers and sisters in Europe who have a much better relationship with alcohol than ourselves.

Why You Should Be Brutally Honest With Your Casual Partner
Why You Should Be Brutally Honest With Your Casual Partner

Honesty is always to be admired, if not enjoyed. Disagree? Try being told your linen-rumpling leaves something to be desired. But it is for that very reason your casual hook up partner will (eventually) thank you for your sincerity.

Not only that, but as one unfortunate woman recently told the world (via Mamamia), honesty when casually dating is also crucial in order to spare both the ego-bruised and ego-bruiser time and further embarrassment.

How so?

In the piece, our unlucky-in-love author recounts how she was “grateful” when her crush crushed her hopes of a burgeoning relationship because it was, “The most beautiful, rational and honest reason I heard from someone not wishing to date me.”

Here’s what he said: “I don’t know exactly what it is, but I’m not sure about us. I have too many things going on in my life right now. I think I’m not ready to date someone.” A far cry from the above graphic, which illustrates the opposite.

Anyway, while this guy’s explanation is hardly Pulitzer-worthy, the rejected woman still found it a massive turn on: “He was brutally honest. That was sexy. That’s the kind of quality I’m looking for when I date someone.”

“Honesty. Transparency. Respect.”

“He decided not to date me, and I found it beautiful,” she continued. “Not that I didn’t want to date him, trust me, I would have. [But] we both are looking to understand who we are through personal development [and] he took action according to his priorities.”

Though the above example is slightly cliche (not to mention a potential f**kboi in disguise) it illustrates an important point which dating coach Chris Manak has confirmed to D’Marge is a ‘thing’: brutal honesty is better than staring off into space and ordering another Mojito.

Sounds like a plan

A post shared by Samantha Rothenberg (@violetclair) on

In fact, the Melbourne dating coach told D’Marge that this is a common problem among men: we have been conditioned to ask the questions we think our date wants to hear, rather than the fun ones that pop into our heads.

“Guys will sit on dates, ask questions they think they are supposed to ask, and have very boring conversations.”

Unfortunately for most of us, this phenomenon only gets worse with nerves, hence the amount of jittery, interview-like dates out there. Fortunately, there is a fix: “Ask whatever you want to know about [without being a weirdo].”

This ties into the growing trend of Australian men (finally) realising that showing your emotions is not a red flag but a sexy asset, something which we have covered at length with Samantha X. Of course, that is not a licence to whinge (as Chris told us – this is a massive turn off).

But it is to say if you get the honesty-balance right in this domain (i.e. not exaggerating things into something worse than they are hoping for sympathy, and not putting a brave face on things either) then you may find your appreciation for the dating world (and the dating world’s appreciation for you) skyrocket.

“If you’re a rally strong confident guy and then you show vulnerability [he or] she’s going to lose their shit. But if you’re just vulnerable… [perhaps not].”
