Ronaldo’s Latest Workout Reveals The Key To Getting Stronger With Age
Ronaldo’s Latest Workout Reveals The Key To Getting Stronger With Age

Is there anything worse than waking up one morning to discover you’re old? Judging by his latest workouts and performances, Ronaldo wouldn’t know.

While the rest of us struggle with early-onset back pain and sugar-fuelled bouts of laziness, Ronaldo keeps kicking goals (he has scored in the last nine Serie A games straight) few will ever achieve.

35 and ageing like a fine wine @kingjames @cristiano

But in an industry full of fluff science, marginal gains and OUTRAGEOUS headlines, it can be hard to know whether Ronaldo’s physique is a realistic aim – let alone how to get it.

While the following exercises are not an exact representation of the Juventus striker’s fitness routine, they do show what he has been up to over the last six months – particularly the most recent one, posted in January.

They also offer an insight the aging-averse man who wants to continue building strength into his mid-thirties should take on board: keep challenging yourself, don’t take it easy, and try something other than “bench, bicep curls, dips.”

So: here’s what you need to do if you want to get (and stay) ripped, Ronaldo style.

Study Finds The Best Exercise To Stretch Your Brain
Study Finds The Best Exercise To Stretch Your Brain

When it comes to keeping our brains healthy, you’d be forgiven for thinking that the best way to keep it in tip-top condition is to consistently solve puzzles such as crosswords or maths equations. But who really likes solving algebra equations?

So what if we were to tell you that researchers at the University of South Australia, Adelaide have found there could be a new way that can keep you fit in the process? If you’re anything like us, you’d be interested.

According to researcher Dr. Ashleigh Smith and her PhD student Maddison Mellow, the brain can actually be subject to a high change in neuroplasticity with “20 minutes of interval training or 25 minutes of continuous moderate aerobic exercise.”

Neuroplasticity refers to the “brain’s ability to rewire or modify its neural connections” and is vital to the brain’s development, such as learning new skills and holding on to memories.

To conduct the experiment, a group of 128 participants was asked to complete a single bout of exercise either on an exercise bike or a treadmill. Some participants were asked to carry out a low-intensity exercise by either running or cycling at a continuous speed, while the others had to undergo high-intensity interval training wherein the heart rate is raised for short periods.

Dr. Smith said, “cycling or running at full speed without mixing up the tempo may elevate the stress hormone, cortisol, blocking the positive effects.”

She adds that “cortisol appeared to play a major role in whether an exercise was mentally beneficial.”

“High levels can block neuroplastic responses, whereas interval training may allow a sweet spot for cortisol rate to return to normal levels.”

She goes on to say that the brain needs to essentially act like some dough or a rubber band. “The brain has many neural pathways that can replicate another’s function so that if the brain is damaged it can re-route signals along a different pathway.”

“The more elastic the brain, the easier this is.”

Mellow added, “Long-term studies demonstrate that people who engage in regular exercise show greater neural connectivity than those who are sedentary. Research also shows that exercising before learning a new motor skill can help a person learn it much faster.”

So if you’re finding yourself unable to remember the name of someone you met just last week, or you’ve realised that learning new skills is no longer as simple as riding a bike, dust off your running shoes, hop on a treadmill and give your whole body, brain included, a workout.

Bell & Ross Just Dropped Three Vintage Watches To Die For
Bell & Ross Just Dropped Three Vintage Watches To Die For

Swiss watchmaker Bell & Ross takes inspiration from aviation instruments when it designs its watches. Nowhere is that better exemplified than with the square-cased BR-03 collection. But the company also draws on military specs for its vintage collection and has just announced three models representing land, sea, and air, all of which have us drooling.

All three models have previously been available, but the additions bring with them new colour choices. Starting with the BR V2-93 GMT Blue, which can display two time zones at once and is aimed at “both modern professional and civilian travellers”. It sports a 41mm steel case, something it shares with the rest of the Vintage series and features an eye-catching red arrow to depict the second time zone. It will be available from the end of February with a NATO Stretch strap, created using parachute straps for AU$4,900 or a stainless steel bracelet for $5,400.

The BR V2-92 Military Green meanwhile has been designed to be a practical, everyday wear watch. Being a military watch, it features an anti-reflective dial, in a matte khaki finish, so that it can be easily read day or night, whether you’re out on the town or happen to find yourself in some battlefield trenches. It will be available from March for $4,400 with a NATO strap or $4,900 with a bracelet.

Finally, the BR V2-94 Aéronavale Bronze (featured top) arrives as a limited edition of 999 pieces and marries together a functional timepiece, with elegant design, taking inspiration from the French naval officer uniform. The 41mm case is made from a stabilised bronze, a material that Bell & Ross has used on a handful of previous occasions, and one that changes over time, making each model completely unique. It will be available from April with a calf leather strap for $7,900.

High Level Sex Tips All Couples Need To Know
High Level Sex Tips All Couples Need To Know

Linen rumpling is not known as a cerebral pursuit. But being smarter about sex could be the difference between a loveless marriage and one that makes your neighbours jealous.

To reach that point, especially when you are in the depths of a fly-blown relationship, you must put in some effort.

So what’s a couple to do? Well, if you’re savvy, you’ll seek expert advice. But counsellors are icky and boring and serious – or so the stereotype goes.

Though that’s not necessarily the case, if you can’t get that trope out of your mind, you can take a pew and listen to the following expert-approved tips for getting more bang for your buck.

Sex expert, author and columnist Tracey Cox yesterday penned a piece in The Daily Mail with 23 ways of “initiating sex” without feeling awkward.

While we don’t think all 23 are gold, we’ve chosen the most sophisticated five for you to browse.

Ban your partner from initiating

As Tracey points out, “If you’re constantly being hassled for sex, you don’t get the chance to miss it.” The solution? Whichever partner has the high libido must be banned from initiating sex, until the one with the low libido starts feeling it – thus creating a positive cycle.

“Power is a massive turn-on and if you’re the one who’s suddenly up for it and making all the moves, you’ll be surprised how turned on you’ll feel.”

Don’t wait for the perfect conditions

Though the celebrity magazines would have you believe you need several candles, a mood lamp, incense and the body of Kim Kardashian (or Chris Hemsworth) to seduce a partner in 2020, the truth is, seizing the moment could be the best thing for you.

“You sort of wouldn’t mind if you had sex? Don’t just ponder the thought, pounce on it – and do it as soon as you can!” (The Daily Mail).

Tracey says, “Studies show the more time that passes between having an idea and following up on it, the more likely you are to lose motivation.”

“Don’t let things like dishes or shopping online or ‘I’ll just answer that email first’ get in the way.”

Get creative with fridge magnets

“Each of you claim a magnet then move it once a day depending on if you do or don’t feel like sex,” Tracey says. “If the magnet is close to the top of the fridge, it means you’re extremely interested; if it’s at the bottom, you’d rather be doing your tax return.”

Wear sexy lingerie to bed

As long as it’s not a Borat costume, this is both sophisticated, surprising and effective. The only risk is they’re so tired they don’t realise you’ve done it.

Tell them you want them when they know they can’t have you

Bonus points if it’s accompanied by a raunchy changing room shot.

Daniel Riccardo’s Baller Move Wearing $300,000 Patek On US Talk Show
Daniel Riccardo’s Baller Move Wearing $300,000 Patek On US Talk Show

Formula One is one of the, if not the most glamorous sport on the planet. Royalty, billionaires, and beautiful people flock to every race throughout the season. The drivers are some of the highest-paid in world sports too, so when it comes to dressing themselves, they need not worry about the cost involved.

That’s certainly the stance Daniel Ricciardo has taken, as the Australian driver was spotted wearing a $300,000 solid gold Patek Philippe Nautilus during a recent appearance on The Daily Show on the 3rd of February, 2020. Sitting down to chat to host Trevor Noah about his involvement in the Netflix docu-series Formula 1: Drive to Survive, the ‘Honey Badger’ from Perth casually flashed the 18k gold timepiece to remind us all of just how pretty his bank account must be.

Bling bling, baby.

To give him his credit, he’s owned the rose gold watch in question for some time, having been spotted wearing it way back in 2017 as well, so at least he’s getting a return on his investment. He clearly doesn’t feel the need to compete with the likes of Floyd Mayweather, who seems to change his watch as often as his underwear. As it were, Mayweather owns his own gold Nautilus but being the showman that he is, has had his bedazzled with ruby inserts.

However, neither comes close to the value of the Patek Philippe Ref. 1518 perpetual calendar with chronograph, which, back in 2016 held the title of the world’s most expensive watch.

If Daniel has a successful season this year with his current Renault team, he may well decide to update his collection. Time will tell if Ricciardo makes another horological investment.

This $144 Duffel Is The Ultimate Gym Bag For Men

As a gym-goer, you no doubt have some interest in your health and appearance. As a result, heading to the gym has also culminated in some snazzy gym clothing and shoes. The missing piece to this good looking formula though is a quality gym bag that you can cart your kit around in.

Whilst on the surface a great gym bag might seem like a simple item, it needs to do quite a lot. It needs to have enough space to carry clothing, shoes, a towel, various protein and pre-workout shakers and perhaps a roller or trigger ball, yet it cannot be too bulky. It also needs to be convenient to carry and obviously good looking.

Quite the criteria now you think about it, a criteria that BAD Bags’ #4 Backpack Duffel Hybrid fulfils perfectly. It has a 69L capacity with various internal pockets that will carry every gym essential you need. It’s also a hybrid, meaning you can carry it as a duffel or as a backpack, either way, it looks very cool. The combination of all black Cordura nylon and stainless steel fittings make it look both tough and sophisticated.

Priced at $144, it’s rather reasonable, considering your getting a highly capable, versatile and quality bag that will no doubt get a lot of use.

How To Tell You’re Eating Enough Protein To Be In An Anabolic State
How To Tell You’re Eating Enough Protein To Be In An Anabolic State

You scoop some protein powder into your morning smoothie, slurp it, then look in the mirror with disgust.

“Am I not working out hard enough?” you might ask yourself. Or perhaps, “Maybe I’m not working out often enough.”

Before you go crazy wondering, we have a tip for you. That’s right: this is your guide to telling if you’re eating enough protein to be in an anabolic state (then you can go back to blaming your workouts).

First of all: what is an anabolic state? Essentially: a state in which you build muscle.

A post shared by Peter O Reilly FRCms P.T. 🇮🇪 (@p.t.pete) on

It’s actually quite simple: your body is either anabolic or catabolic at any given point, and for it to be anabolic, it must consume a source of energy – something which protein high foods or supplements can help with.

According to The Evening Standard’s Health & Fitness vertical, “Anabolism produces growth and differentiation of cells and an increase in body size, a process that involves synthesis of complex molecules.”

Meanwhile: “In strenuous, long-duration workouts, such as running a marathon, if you don’t provide the right nutrients to replenish the cells, the body will begin to break down muscle as a form of producing enough energy to survive.” In other words: you enter a catabolic state.

At heart, the theory behind anabolic training is to eat well before lifting weights, in order to provide enough energy to build mass.

A fancy term for eating to build muscle.

But how do you know if you’re eating enough – without risking eating too much protein?

If you’re us, you listen to your local personal trainer. In my case, that means taking cues from Head Coach Joey Hall of Plus Fitness Manly.

Qualified in Weight Loss & Toning, Hypertrophy and Strength & Conditioning and Performance Nutrition, Joey recently provided the gym goers of Plus Fitness Manly (of which I’m one) with some sound advice.

“Are you eating enough protein to aid recovery and promote an anabolic environment?” Joey asked, answering his question with the following insight: “the scale of grams of protein per kg of bodyweight range between 1.4 (general population) and as high as 3.0g (athletic population) per kg of bodyweight.”

“Factors that impact where you sit on this scale depend on your level of lean body mass and volume/intensity of weight train.”

In other words: the harder (and longer) you train, the more you need to eat. You also need to know your body mass in order to calculate this – and, of course, have access to quality protein (something the following graphic can help you with).

FITDAY, a bodybuilding website, has further advice, saying you should aim for a nutrient ratio of 50% carbs, 30% protein and 20% fats, to maintain an anabolic state, as well as ensuring you never miss a meal.

FITDAY also emphasises the importance of getting enough sleep and looking after your hormonal balance by avoiding cigarettes and alcohol.

Happy chomping.
