Piaget Make The Competition ‘Green With Envy’ With World’s Thinnest Watch
Piaget Make The Competition ‘Green With Envy’ With World’s Thinnest Watch

Earlier this year in February, DMARGE made the bold call that the ‘next big thing’ in watches would be green dials… And it seems as if our prediction has come true, as this year’s Watches & Wonders – the industry’s biggest trade show – has seen a flood of green watches unveiled by some of the world’s top watch brands.

Tudor has unveiled green Black Bays made with precious metals. Cartier has revived the classic green Must de Cartier Tank. Panerai has literally gone green with some very eco-friendly (and colourful) models. And that’s just the tip of the iceberg…

But the most impressive green watch of the show might just be Piaget’s contribution to the growing craze: the new Altiplano Ultimate Concept ‘Tribute To La Côte-Aux-Fées’ (ref. G0A46503). Not only is this mechanical marvel the world’s thinnest watch, but it also features one of the most elegantly executed green colour schemes we’ve seen on a watch for a very long time.

Since the mid-20th century, Piaget has been the undisputed leader in ultra-thin watches and movements. The Altiplano Ultimate Concept is their latest record holder and a true work of art that last year was awarded the watchmaking world’s highest honour: the top prize of the Grand Prix d’Horlogerie de Genève; the prestigious Aiguille D’Or.

Piaget have continued the celebrations in 2021 with this special version, dedicated to the Swiss Jura village of La Côte-aux-Fées where Georges Edouard Piaget founded the company back in 1874 and where the design, development and creation of every ultra-thin Piaget movement has been carried out. The deep forest green of the ref. G0A46503 is a homage to the verdant, bucolic landscapes that inform the artistry of Piaget’s watches.

Precision personified: a profile shot of the Altiplano Ultimate Concept shows just how thin it really is.

Measuring up at an astounding 2mm thick (or rather, thin) and weighing only 14.2g without the colour-matched alligator leather strap, the Altiplano Ultimate Concept’s cobalt alloy case is so slight that only 0.12mm separates the movement from the wearer’s skin.

Adding to the watch’s clean look is the unique crown, which has been re-invented to take the form of a flat, telescopic system (with its own, bespoke winding tool) that fits flush with the case band. A semi-skeletonised design shows off the groundbreaking 900P-UC movement for all to see, which despite its thinness, boasts a 40-hour power reserve – more than watches many times thicker than the Altiplano Ultimate Concept. The green of this reference in particular really makes it pop, too.

Just this watch would be enough to satisfy most watch fans but the Altiplano Ultimate Concept ‘Tribute To La Côte-Aux-Fées’ was but one of a score of timepieces Piaget unveiled at W&W.

Other highlights, such as new additions to the Polo Skeleton line and haute joaillerie in the Limelight Gala collection, can be discovered at Piaget’s virtual boutique.

Parisian Photographer Captures ‘Weird’ Beach Habit Australians Think Is Normal
Parisian Photographer Captures ‘Weird’ Beach Habit Australians Think Is Normal

Australia has more quirks than a scribbly gum has squiggles. From trees that naturally look like a toddler drew all over them to a coastal populace which strips off and jumps in ravenous waters on the daily, if you tilt your head in the right light we certainly live up to the ‘loveable weirdos down under’ stereotypes.Speaking of… a Parisian photographer based in Sydney’s iconic Bondi beach has just taken to social media to share an Australian habit that may loosen the stomachs of some of the more civilised prudish countries around the globe.Budgie smugglers.Speedos, sausage sizzlers, male hot pants… call them what you will; when Sydney is buffeted by a brisk southerly (and we all wake up shaking in our boxer shorts) these seem to be the last guys left standing, Amaury Tréguer (aka @morningbondi) reckons.Only the bravest “show up all year long” Amaury told DMARGE. “Unfortunately most of them wear dick stickers.”

In a photo posted to Instagram yesterday, Amaury wrote: “Chilly. Grrrr… This morning was cold, turned up in tee-shirt, quickly regret it. The wind was quite unpleasant but lucky the sunrise was alright. You know it’s winter when I start taking photos of men in Speedos.”

“There is not much [else] going on.”

There are two trends that might raise the eyebrows of those around the globe here. One, as DMARGE covered last year, is the winter ritual of going for a dip no matter the thermometer (something done, it should be noted, not just by men).

RELATED: Photographer Captures Australian Winter Ritual Americans Will Never UnderstandThe other is speedos.Inspired by a poll conducted by Instagram account @paris_vs_sydney, Amaury took it upon himself to ask his followers about their swimwear preferences.64% of respondents said they prefer board shorts to budgie smugglers.

This came as a relief to the stylish Parisian (who has been living in Bondi since 2010): “Phew…. I’m glad to see that Morning Bondi followers have a sense of fashion and style. Please tell me the ones who inadvertently vited for ugly ‘dick stickers’ were just skipping my stories [winky face],” Amaury (half) jokingly wrote. While the benefits of cold water therapy are well documented, as are the mental health benefits of socialising regularly (part of the reason morning swim groups are so popular), we are yet to see any sophisticated studies into speedo wearing.RELATED: This Brutal Danish Ritual Could Be The Key To HappinessPerhaps this stylistic choice is being unfairly maligned (and is due a comeback) like the mullet? Or is it destined for the great fashion dustbin in the sky? Who will win? Hurley and co. or budgeesmuggler.com.au?

Lewis Hamilton Inadvertently Exposes Australia’s Favourite Pastime On T-Shirt

Lewis Hamilton might be known for his love of fashion (and high-speed hijinks), but his latest outfit might have Australians saying ‘slow down, mate.’The 36-year-old Mercedes driver is Formula One’s brightest star: the reigning driver’s champion and widely considered the Greatest Of All Time, Hamilton’s dominance in his sport is unparalleled. He’s also a bonafide style icon, known for his particularly sharp sartorial instincts off the track. Hamilton’s love of niche streetwear brands and confident style – as well as his prodigious racing talent – making him quite unlike any figure in F1 history.Ahead of the Emilia Romagna Grand Prix, Hamilton’s shown off yet another colourful outfit consisting of a yellow Prada bucket hat (one of many in his collection), sunglasses from his collaborative collection with Police and some breezy linen trousers. So far, so chic. But it’s his t-shirt that made us have a double-take. A tie-dyed number from cult LA label Online Ceramics, the intentionally kitsch shirt features a graphic of two sunflowers with the text “Let’s ROOT For Each Other” – superficially, a very uncontroversial, good vibes message, but one that means something else entirely in Australia.

In the US, rooting for someone is to cheer them on; support them. In Australia, rooting means something different… If you told someone down at the pub that you were rooting for Lewis Hamilton, they’d probably ask why you’ve dedicated your love life to a British F1 driver. Hell, just walking into a pub with Lewis’ shirt might be a provocative move in of itself. His fans don’t seem bothered by the shirt’s message, however, with nothing but endless gushing praise for the man on Instagram. Maybe we’ve just immature. Or maybe they too are fans of Australia’s favourite pastime…RELATED: I Wore Every F*ckboi’s Favourite Footwear For A Week & It Changed My LifeWe’re only one Grand Prix into 2021 but the consensus among F1 tragics is that Hamilton’s likely to continue his domination of the sport. Hamilton took home gold at the Bahrain Grand Prix in March, the first time he’s won the first race of the season since the 2015 Australian Grand Prix. (Normally the Australian Grand Prix opens up the F1 season, but it’s been pushed back to November because of COVID.)The Emilia Romagna Grand Prix in Imola kicks off this weekend, with fans keen to see the rivalry between Hamilton and Red Bull’s Max Verstappen heat up. Like last year, we’ll see multiple Grands Prix in Italy in 2021, with the Italian Grand Prix proper set to take place at Monza on the 12th of September.

‘Worst Haircut Ever’: British Men Facing Epidemic Of Rusty Barbers
‘Worst Haircut Ever’: British Men Facing Epidemic Of Rusty Barbers

When you’ve been waiting months for a haircut, you want it to be damn good. That was not the case for one unfortunate Scottish man, whose botched bouffant recently went viral for all the wrong reasons.Along the way, it exposed a broader problem in the UK right now: many barbers are rusty as hell. The man – a 20-year-old student from Glasgow – paid £12 (AUD$21) for a “mid skin fade.”The problem? It was shaved right up and not really blended at all.Andy took to Twitter on April the 7th to warn others of his ordeal – which he claims to be the worst haircut of his life.

Many chimed in with remarks like, “Look familiar,” tagging their friends, suggesting the problem may not be an isolated incident.Andy also shared snippets of a WhatsApp conversation he had with the barber, in which he was offered a free new do, which he declined.

Some users, who appear to know Andy, chimed in with (apparent) jokes, saying, “Your haircuts have always been horrendous.”Other Twitter users shared some brutal cuts they’ve seen of their own…

Others said they didn’t even know the barbers were open.

The general conclusion? After so many lockdowns, barbers are probably a bit rusty.

“He was probably rusty cause of quarantine. I’m sure he’s gonna be back to his best,” one Twitter user wrote.Further Twitter users said seeing this haircut made them nervous about their own appointments with the clippers.

The incident also exposed a common problem men and women have both, since time immemorial, had at the hairdressers – awkwardness stopping you from speaking up when you don’t like the direction your cut is heading in.

Although the difference between a bad haircut and a good haircut is often just a week or two, the man has been encouraged to stay at home and self-isolate, just in case…

Stay safe, people.

Cartier’s Playful New Watches Are The Perfect Antidote To Your Lockdown Blues
Cartier’s Playful New Watches Are The Perfect Antidote To Your Lockdown Blues

Founded in Paris in 1847, Cartier has long been regarded as one of the world’s most prestigious luxury brands. Most people know them for their jewellery, but they are also purveyors of some of the most iconic watches of all time – indeed, Cartier brought the world’s very first wristwatch to market, the groundbreaking Santos, in 1911.But it’s not just history and prestige that attract people to the brand. What Cartier do arguably better than anyone else in the business is just having fun. Cartier has always had a distinctly playful, innovative character as a Maison: their designs are timeless, but they always feel light and youthful. And fun is exactly what we need after a year of COVID-induced pain.So with that in mind, let’s focus in on four collections Cartier has unveiled during this year’s Watches & Wonders that epitomise that ‘retro but relevant’, luxuriously youthful spirit. Allons-y!

Tank Must

The eco-chic SolarBeat Tank Must.
The 80s was a colourful period and a time of real innovation in the watch industry. It also saw the release of the Must de Cartier Tank, a highly colourful, more accessible reimagining of the iconic Tank watch that has since become a cult classic.2021’s new Tank Must range pays direct homage to that groundbreaking collection while introducing some thoroughly modern innovations, and might just be the most exciting Tank range in Cartier’s oeuvre. As seen above, there are three new large models with red, green and blue dials that closely resemble the 80s’ models, but the range also includes also the SolarBeat Tank Must: Cartier’s first solar-powered watch. With photovoltaic cells cleverly disguised behind the numerals, this clever piece can run for 16 years without a service. The Tank Must case design itself is a particularly tasty interpretation of the Tank: very round, very smooth and very slim, it has a sort of universality to it that you could imagine it equally at home paired with a shoulder-padded suit and pumps or a denim jacket and Air Jordan sneakers.

Pasha de Cartier

The Pasha de Cartier Chronograph 41mm in stainless steel.
Another classic 80s design from Cartier is the Pasha de Cartier. An unabashedly grandiose design that predicted the rise of unisex fashion long before Europe’s famous fashion houses started to pay attention, the Pasha has been the focus of a revival over the last twelve months, spearheaded by a diverse crew of celebrity ambassadors.Watches & Wonders has seen Cartier add a 41mm chronograph model to the range, which masterfully pairs the idiosyncratic and artistic nature of the Pasha with the sportiness of a racing timer. It’s a watch that definitely marches to the beat of its own drum. A rotating bezel, chronograph pushers with cabochons that reflect the Pasha’s distinctive crown and an ultra-legible yet magnificently guilloched display… It’s the horological equivalent of Sydney Sweeney drifting a Porsche 911.RELATED: Sydney Sweeney Reinforces ‘Dream Girl’ Status With Porsche Stunt

Cartier Privé

L-R: the Cloche de Cartier in pink gold, platinum and yellow gold.

Cartier Privé is the brand’s collector-focused watch collection, and features some of its boldest, most playful designs. Think the Salvador Dalí-esque Crash or the aggressively chic Tank Asymétrique. W&W 2021 has seen Cartier unveil a new addition to the collection: a revival of the Cloche de Cartier.A design that Cartier first introduced in the 1920s, the Cloche was way ahead of its time when it came to ergonomics and readability. The bell-like case shape is funky, but what’s really interesting is that its dial is oriented 90 degrees to the right of what’s normal – so that you can easily read it with an outstretched wrist, or place it on a table (or nightstand) and turn it into a desk clock.RELATED: This 1940s Cartier ‘Watch’ Might Be The Most Unique Timepiece You Ever SeeLast re-released in 2007, 2021’s redux includes six models: three satin-brushed closed-dial variants and three skeletonised models – a classic Cartier move. All are powered by new in-house movements, too.

Fine Watchmaking

L-R: the Rotonde de Cartier Astromystérieux, Mysterious Skeleton Double Tourbillon and Mysterious Astrotourbillon.
We’ve saved the best till last… Although that’s not what Cartier did. They actually unveiled their Fine Watchmaking pieces for 2021 ahead of W&W. C’est la vie, et c’est Cartier. All three are Rotonde de Cartier models, and all three feature eye-catching tourbillon movements.First up, we have the Astromystérieux, which pulls off the impressive optical illusion that the entire movement is floating, weightless, in the middle of the watch. The tourbillon carriage integrates not only the watch’s regulating organ but also the entire wheel train from the barrel to the balance which is all carried by a sapphire disc. Roman numerals adorn the outer dial for a classic Cartier touch. The Skeleton Mysterious Double Tourbillon also appears to flout the laws of physics. The flying tourbillon completes a full rotation in 60 seconds and appears to be floating completely free in space, with no visible connection to any gear train. The illusion becomes even more striking when the same tourbillon carriage performs a second rotation, completing an orbit every five minutes. Finally, we have the Astrotourbillon, which features a single tourbillon mounted centrally and actually above the rest of the movement structure, which creates a unique visual effect. That effect is further brought into focus by the ultra-clean skeletonised bridge, which integrates the 12 and 6 o’clock numerals into its design. Spectacular stuff.

Luxury Hotel Opens On The Side Of Bali Everyone Has Forgotten About

Ubud, Canggu and Seminyak may be Bali’s ‘happening’ hives (for tourists), but the other side of the island hides an old faithful you may have forgotten: Sanur.Sanur was one of Bali’s first tourist honeypots, and has both a rich history and a relaxed ~vibe~. Though it still struggles with overtourism (and has a Green Tourism Plan to counter it) Sanur is relatively quiet compared to Seminyak or Kuta (and relatively neglected, in terms of press coverage, of late, compared to say, up and coming luxury destinations like Nusa Dua).Sanur beach comprises several quiet stretches of sand and is home to some of the island’s oldest hotels and boutique resorts.Andaz Bali has now sprung up into their midst. Bucking the neu-age destination trend, the Andaz Bali opened its doors in Sanur on April the 9th.

Chopard Dial Up The Class At Watches & Wonders 2021
Chopard Dial Up The Class At Watches & Wonders 2021

Can you have too much of a good thing? That’s the question watch fans have been asking themselves over the last five days with this year’s edition of Watches & Wonders.

The week-long industry trade show has already seen hundreds of high-profile watch releases from some of the world’s most prestigious brands. The sheer quantity of innovations and delights can be somewhat overwhelming, so it pays to sort the wheat from the chaff and focus in on some of the most intriguing releases… Which is exactly what we’re going to do today with Chopard.

The 161-year-old Swiss watchmaker and jeweller has had a particularly stacked W&W lineup, unveiling a whopping 15 watches across 5 collections, more than enough to satisfy even the most demanding horological appetites. But we’re going to focus on just one of those collections – their new L.U.C men’s dress watches – as not only are they perhaps the most interesting new timepieces Chopard will be releasing this year, but some of the most interesting reveals of W&W in its entirety.

First up, we have the L.U.C. Perpetual Chrono in titanium (ref. 168611-3001), which is both physically and technically the biggest release of the lot. Previous L.U.C perpetual calendar chronograph models have garnered praise for their master chronometer certifications and impressive 60-hour power reserve (thanks to the brilliant L.U.C 03.10-L movement they all share), but at 45mm, they’ve always been a serious piece of wrist candy.

So a titanium model is a very exciting prospect: lighter and tougher than steel, this new reference means one of Chopard’s finest creations is more practical and impressive than ever. Indeed, that’s the theme of all of Chopard’s 2021 releases: refreshing new takes on their impressive creations that broaden their appeal without sacrificing the brand’s signature classiness. This brings us perfectly to their next two delights…

L-R: the L.U.C Time Traveler One Black (ref. 168574-3008), L.U.C GMT One Black (ref. 168579-3004) and the L.U.C. Perpetual Chrono in titanium (ref. 168611-3001).

Marvels for men on the move

Any gentleman worth their salt knows that black is the most stylish colour there is (all those saying that black’s not a colour, we get it, you’re real clever…) So for Chopard to come out with murdered-out editions of their two most handsome travel watches is a no-brainer.

The L.U.C Time Traveler One Black (ref. 168574-3008) is the world traveller’s ideal watch. With a highly legible outer cities display and clever concentric dial construction, it packs a great deal of world time information into one watch without looking too cluttered or overwhelming. Can we also take a quick moment to recognise how fantastic the name ‘Time Traveller’ is?

The L.U.C GMT One Black (ref. 168579-3004) is similar but slightly less busy, losing the cities display and swapping a date hand for a date window. Both boast an innovatively finished 42mm ceramised titanium case, remarkably stylish vegan fabric straps and water resistance to 50m. The black looks dapper as hell, too – and it means that you never have to worry about your watch not matching your outfit no matter how tight your baggage allowance is. Black goes with everything.

Dress to impress

The last two models you should have across your radar this W&W season are two incredibly elegant, particularly limited editions released to celebrate the 25th anniversary of the Chopard Manufacture.

L-R: the L.U.C QF Jubilee (ref. 168613-3001) and the L.U.C Quattro Spirit 25 (ref. 161977-5001).

The stainless steel L.U.C QF Jubilee (ref. 168613-3001) is a thoroughly modern watch with an understated, Art Deco aesthetic. The simplicity of its sector-type dial and ultra-clean design belies the fact it boasts a 65-hour power reserve, COSC certification and Fleurier Quality certification; one of the most prestigious and demanding achievements a Swiss watch can ever hope to have.

The second is similarly (if not more) impressive, as not only is it Chopard’s first jumping-hour timepiece, but features a magnificent and tricky-to-pull-off grand feu enamel dial – two real hallmarks of haute horlogerie. The yellow gold L.U.C Quattro Spirit 25 (ref. 161977-5001) is not only visually distinct and just screams class, but thanks to its four-barrel Quattro technology, has a gargantuan 192-hour power reserve. That’s 8 days.

And would you believe that we’re only just scratching the surface of Chopard’s 2021 releases? Head to their online boutique to discover the rest of their impressive goodies.

James McAvoy Breaks #1 Men’s Style Rule With Black Tie Blooper
James McAvoy Breaks #1 Men’s Style Rule With Black Tie Blooper

James McAvoy might be most famous for playing a psychic in the X-Men series but if he could read our minds right now he’d probably be embarrassed. The 41-year-old Scottish actor was tapped to present the Rising Star Award at the 74th British Academy Film Awards (better known as the BAFTAs) over the weekend and was spotted on the red carpet ahead of the event wearing a slim black suit, patent leather Chelsea boots and a pair of sunglasses from David Beckham’s new eyewear brand – so far, so normal. But McAvoy undid all his good work by committing a simple but unforgivable men’s style rule: wearing a tie with your top button undone. It’s simple, fellas – either do your top button up or ditch the tie. Otherwise, you just look unprofessional.

Image: Jeff Spicer/Getty
Not everyone took umbrage at his sartorial sin, however. His fans have been rapturous in their praise online, with one of his Instagram followers even commenting that he’s “looking kinda like Tony Stark” (another Marvel character played by Robert Downey Jr, of course).McAvoy’s blooper was brought into sharp contrast because there were just so many well-dressed men at the event. Chiwetel Ejiofor, Tom Hiddleston and Richard E. Grant kept things classic in black tie; Daniel Kaluuya looked amazing in an all-white look, and Nick Jonas wore a double-breasted jacket so dapper it was worthy of an award in of itself. It’s fitting that McAvoy presented the Rising Star Award this year as he was the award’s inaugural recipient back in 2006. This year, another Brit won the award: 19-year-old actress Bukky Bakray, best known for her starring role in the 2019 coming-of-age film Rocks. Other previous winners of the award include Tom Hardy, Eva Green, John Boyega and Shia LaBeouf.RELATED: Shia LaBeouf Spotted Committing The Ultimate Men’s Activewear CrimeMcAvoy is next set to appear in the upcoming mystery drama film My Son alongside The Crown actress Claire Foy.
