What To Wear On Your First Day Of Work
What To Wear On Your First Day Of Work

Congratulations. You’ve got the job. Now, knowing what to wear to a new office is your next test. And, one you don’t want to get wrong (gents in the past have been fired for less).

While no two offices are ever the same, contemporary workplaces are generally on par when it comes to professionalism and appropriate business attire.

But, an investment banking firm will have a different dress code to a relaxed creative agency. So, before clothes can be considered, you need to know the expectations of your new role.

Which is why, this guide is a little more on the formal side, keeping it corporate to appease most office taste. Save your statement blazers and cropped vintage denim for the weekend, and read on for a sartorial and simple guide to dressing for a new job.

A Sharp But Not Over The Top Suit

suit
Better than black: navy is a no-brainer for first day on the job tailoring.

First up, jeans and a t-shirt are never acceptable new job clothes. In corporate circles, a suit or separates are best, or at least until you have assessed the dress code properly and decided you work in a business casual environment.

RELATED: How To Dress Business Casual

While a standard black suit is fine, the formal colour doesn’t really say much about your creative or innovative side. Instead, try a navy suit with matching trouser and jacket. That way, you’ll have the option of splitting the two and injecting a pair of khaki chinos if the full suit look is a little formal for your new stomping ground.

“Personally, I would wear a beautifully cut two-button notch lapel suit in either navy or charcoal,” says Wilson.

grey
A tonal check or texture via herringbone weave is nice textural touch to suits.

As for fabric, avoid pure cotton and linen (it’s not a summer garden party). So, stick with medium-weight wool and harness your style prowess with a subtle weave: think herringbone, which adds as sophisticated edge to a midnight blue tone.

Finally, a contemporary office expects modern silhouettes. Keep the suit slim cut (never skinny) for a deal-winning fit.

Clean & Pressed Shirt’s The Word

shirt
Don’t lash out with loud prints and garish colours on your first day. Business blue and traditional white is best.

Much the like the suit, the shirt is best kept simple and quality-made, not outlandish in colour and print. Stick to business blue or go for a traditional white, says Wilson: “A navy work suit looks great paired with a crisp, white shirt.”

As for style, a button down Oxford is a timeless, fail-proof choice. And stick to natural fibres – going for pure cotton — to help with those first day nervous sweats. And, tie or no-tie?

RELATED: Dress Shirt Fibre And Fabrics Explained

“It depends on the work environment,” adds Wilson. A modern workplace is generally more relaxed. For this, take a point-collar shirt and leave the top two buttons unbuttoned. And, for a more corporate environment: “Opt for cutaway collar shirt with a silk tie.”

If you’re in doubt, layer in a cashmere sweater and cardigan. That way, you can lose the jacket if you’re overdressed, and you still look kept.

Great Footwear Is Essential

shoes
Leather dress shoes are a must: no sneakers or loafers come first day on the job. And don’t forget your socks.

For a new job, a leather shoe is a must, cautions Wilson: “Either an Oxford or Derby in black or chocolate.”

Avoid lighter neutral shades such as tan, which tend to dress-down all that hard work you put into your dapper suit, leaving them for casual Fridays. This goes for brogues and leather loafers too, always wearing socks — you’re not a Pitti Uomo sprezz and a new office is no place to parade those mankles.

RELATED: A Guide To Wearing Shoes With No Socks

Finally, no sneakers or coloured or embellished shoes. “This isn’t a disco,” says Wilson.

Accessorise To Personalise (But Not Too Much)

accessories
Accessories are where you can personalise and play a little with your new job look.

Accessories are the icing on your new-job-new-look cake. And they’re the perfect way to give insight into the type of guy you are (you can tell a lot about a man by his bag).

“Investing in a bag is a great idea,” says Wilson. “When starting a new job, I believe in coming prepared with computer, diary, pen and paper. You never know what you may be asked, so being over prepared and organised is key.”

Opt for a leather briefcase if you’re more the corporate purist, or a leather tote for a bag that is just as practical but softer on formalities.

Finally, keep your flashy rings, lapel pins and bracelets and cuffs at home on the dresser. “When it comes to jewellery, don’t be showy and keep it simple.” A quality watch is ideal, showcasing a classic taste for man’s most trusted accessory.

Final Word

separates
Balance personality with quintessential class, and you’re sure to pass your first day on the job in style.

“First impressions are often lasting impressions when you start a new job, warns Wilson: “So, keep it simple and don’t let your outfit overpower your expertise and ability for the role.”

But, don’t be a stiff about your outfit either.

“Still be yourself on the first day. But, over time let your personality shine through as you develop in your role, and your outfit choices should follow,” concludes Wilson.

If you’re a style peacock, there’ll be plenty of opportunities to rule the office roost, after you’ve settled in a bit. Your first day (or week, really) at a new job isn’t one of them. Flourish slowly, no one likes a fast burner.

Tiny Italian Village Flooded With Interest After Offering Houses For ‘Bargain’ Prices
Tiny Italian Village Flooded With Interest After Offering Houses For ‘Bargain’ Prices

Why is it romantic to flee to the Italian hills, yet depressing to move to Bowral? Is it because the far-flung is inherently more attractive? Is it because our heads are full of stereotypes? Is Italy’s countryside really more seductive?Although the 2020 work from home revolution has led droves of Sydneysiders and Melburnites to escape the rat race, the bulk seem to be going to coastal enclaves like Byron Bay, Jervis Bay, Port Macquarie and Noosa – or semi-tropical inland getaways like Bellingen.Country towns like Dubbo, however, remain relatively passed over. On that note: Italy may have a solution Australian state governments and local councils could learn from. Selling houses in areas with dwindling demand for pennies on the dollar.

As CNN Travel reported yesterday, “The town of Biccari is the latest in Italy to offer bargain houses for sale in an effort to reverse depopulation trends caused by decades of locals leaving in search of work.”“If you’ve been tempted to pick up one of the dilapidated houses offered for sale in Italy for little more than $1 but had second thoughts about the hassle of renovating it, one town has an offer that might just tempt you,” CNN Travel wrote.

“Biccari, deep in the southeastern region of Puglia, is also selling off dilapidated homes priced at €1, but unlike other destinations, it also has bargain deals on ready-to-occupy places. Prices of empty turnkey dwellings start as low as €7,500 ($9,000). Most are in the range of €10,000-€13,000.”

The sale is part of a grand plan to stop Biccari, whose population peaked at 5,000 in the 1950s, from becoming a ghost town.

“We’re barely 2,000 residents,” Mayor Gianfilippo Mignogna told CNN Travel. “Depopulation is an open wound, a steady phenomenon. Locals keep leaving and while most used to come back during the summer to visit, now they no longer do so. Many habitable houses are empty and are falling into oblivion.”Enter: you.“One day I was wandering through the old center, and it struck me how so many cute little homes in a perfect shape had been shut for years, tucked away in silent alleys, with signs ‘for rent or sale’ that nobody sees,” Mignogna said.

“I thought the best way was to involve those no-longer interested owners to sell them right off.”

There are about a dozen €1 and 20 “upper-scale” homes available but there could be more than 100 empty dwellings in Biccari are in need of new occupants, according to CNN Travel.

“Photos and maps of the properties will soon be put online on the town hall website but interested people are invited to contact Mignogna (sindaco@comune.biccari.fg.it).”

Those who go for a dilapidated €1 dwelling are required to pay €3,000 – to be returned once the works are completed, possibly within three years. However, if there is “a good reason for” any potential delay then “the completion deadline will be extended,” CNN Travel reports.Since the article by CNN Travel went live, local media outlets have claimed Biccari has been flooded with interest. The verified Instagram account of local news website la Repubblicca yesterday posted an image captioned, “Houses for sale at one euro in the village on the Dauni Mountains: Biccari receives 7 thousand requests in two days. The wave of emails from all over the world after the publication of the news on the CNN website: ‘Cute village in the South of Italy sells houses at affordable prices’. The mayor: ‘We are incredulous.'”

Another account, the National Association of Virtuous Municipalities, posted an image with the caption: “These days we are receiving a lot of emails from the United States and from all over Europe. So far, over 7,000 people have written to us because they are interested in evaluating the purchase of houses in Biccari from 1 to 15 thousand euros.”

“In the narrow world certain houses (and certain things) have not had more luck (for reasons that we are not here to say). But if we try to enlarge this narrow world a little, maybe the story changes. Maybe somewhere there are other possibilities that we can go and build ourselves. For this we try!”

Biccari is located in the province of Foggia, in the Apulia region of southeast Italy. Its top attractions, according to Tripadvisor, are its lakes, the Torre Bizantina, the town’s church and the Chiesa di San Quirico lookout. Biccari also has a classic (though small) selection of restaurants and cafes. At the time of writing, there is only one Airbnb available in Bicarri (when searching for a place to stay this coming weekend). It costs AU $202 for two nights. This gets you an entire house that can accommodate 8 guests, which has 1 bedroom, 4 beds and 2 baths. As of yet there are no reviews.

Will Bicarri be saved? Only time (and, perhaps, the digital nomad trend sweeping the world) will tell.

How To Dress Preppy For Men
How To Dress Preppy For Men

Preppy style isn’t just the domain of kids with trust funds.

It might have originated among rich WASPs who looked like they owned six beach houses, went to Yale, and won medals for rowing. But that’s not to say you can’t have a shot at the title.

Times are changing you magnificent bastard. It’s true. Prep style is a pretty tough thing to escape. JFK became the first cool President because he was an absolute gun at preppy style.

Film stars across the decades have rocked it, and prep powerhouses like Ralph Lauren and Brooks Brothers are more popular than ever. If you like your clothing, you’ll encounter it at some point.

RELATED: What Your Choice In Suits Really Says About You

Where Preppy Men’s Style Began

preppy

The essence of preppy style originated in early 1900’s. Well-heeled Ivy League college kids weren’t impressed with the stuffy, professorial dress they found on campus.

They discovered a suitable alternative in clothing associated with upper-crust hobbies like golf, boating, and rowing. Soon enough, it became a mode of dress for every rich-guy activity you could poke a stick at, from lectures in old-timey red brick halls, to baller yacht parties at Nantucket Island.

What Is Preppy Style

prepp

Good question. A good prep would tell you that it’s more of an approach to style, rather than a prescriptive set of things to wear. We’re leaning on some expert insight to guide the way.

Per menswear commentator Christian Chensvold, ‘one of the chief virtues of the preppy approach to dressing is the notion of being relatively dressed up for casual settings, and relatively dressed down for formal ones’. That’s basically it.

The fundamental idea is treat dress codes with irreverence. Never being too dressy, while avoiding the last-minute-casual slovenliness that has come to define the hazy parameters of ‘smart casual’. The ideal result is a combination of effortlessness and good taste that makes you look put together, without looking like you’re sweating buckets in front of a mirror.

So how is it done? Well, it’s not rocket surgery (getting dressed never should be).

Preppy Style Brands

ralph

There are a few overlords in preppy style, and they wear the crown for a reason.

Brands like these have a prestigious history of producing Ivy-League style since pretty much forever. They were worn by the original preps, and respect the lineage.
  • Ralph Lauren
  • J. Crew
  • Brooks Brothers

So, knowing where to start will save you a fair whack of time. It’ll narrow the selection of options in a crowded market, and keep you from splurging on brands that don’t take the preppy ethos to heart.

Investing In Preppy Quality Staples

There’s nothing sacrosanct in preppy style, but investing in the key staples won’t send you astray. The look has a few fundamental items that are worthwhile investments.

Button Downs

shirts

Button downs, in a range of colours and patterns, are the sinew of a credible preppy repertoire. You can wear them with shorts, chinos, a blazer, or without. Endlessly versatile. Buy a few Brooks Brothers and never look back (except at those who are still wearing graphic tees).

Boat Shoes & Loafers

loafers

For the arch-prep, footwear isn’t small business. Boat shoes and loafers let comfort and good taste meet in the middle. It’s hard to look bad in a pair, and you won’t get blistery feet in the process. They work just as well with a suit as they do with chinos in summer. Usually worn sockless and always made of top notch calf leather.

Preppy Polos Shirts

polo

Polos aren’t the exclusive property of preppy style, but they’re not far off. A decent polo is the gatekeeper to definable ‘smart casual’. It’s infinitely more stylish than a tee, but with fewer formal associations than a collared shirt. Therefore, it’s become an enduring feature of Ivy League adherents, who appreciate its stylish wearability. Ralph Lauren lead the way with polos; some think there’s nowhere else to look.

Preppy Navy Blazers

pitti

A navy sports coat with gold buttons is about as prep as a photo of JFK on a yacht. Such an item can underpin a respectable wardrobe as it can effectively be worn with anything: part of a full suit, with shorts, or odd trousers. The only limit is defined by your imagination.

Preppy Chinos

Men's Chinos

There is a slight disdain for formality among adherents to preppy style, and replacing suit pants with chinos is a manifestation of this quiet disregard for being overdressed. Khaki chinos with navy is an enduring, reliable preppy ensemble. Bolder choices like salmon pink aren’t uncommon, either, for preps with a braver constitution.

Preppy Pullovers

sweats

Crew-neck pullovers and knits are an immediate go-to for the casual end of the preppy spectrum, but that’s not to say you can only wear them outside the corporate stratosphere. Cable knits look smart with chinos on nippy autumn days or under a suit jacket for dapper insulation during colder months.

Enter The Preppy Repp Tie

prep

On the occasion that a preppy dude wears a tie, this is his first, and often last, choice. Originally part of collegiate uniforms, the distinctive striped tie is something most preppy aspirants add to a white button-down and blazer look.

Preppy Knitted Ties

tie

I was pulling your leg, knitted ties are a common alternative. They’re suitable for when a tie is required for a formalising touch or splash of colour, but when a conventional silk tie is a bit too much. Worn with a cable-knit and button down, forgetting the blazer, for a dashing outfit that doesn’t do disservice to the ‘smart casual’ ticket.

Preppy Bowties

bow

In accordance with the irreverent posture of Ivy style, bowties are a popular alternative to traditional neckties. Probably more popular with a professor than a student, but still part of the style regardless. Invest at your own risk.

Don’t Try Too Hard When Going For Preppy Style

once

It’s easy to get enthusiastic about something you enjoy. But your newfound appreciation shouldn’t endanger you to potential ridicule.  Most of us remember those memes of insufferable douchebags in salmon shorts and Brooks Brothers button-downs. It’s a short road to overselling the look, and earning the title of clown prince douchelord (if you haven’t already).

Never Go Full Preppy Style

allatonce

This ties in with caveat numero uno. Prep style is all about being effortless. There’s no need to incorporate everything at once. If you spend most of your time in Bintang singlets and trackies, your mates might ask what the story is if you rock up to knock-offs in boat shoes and a button-down, with a sweater around your shoulders. It takes a brave bloke to cop that roasting, so don’t go full retard. Stick to one or two pieces to start.  Avoid imitating your American lacrosse mates head-to-toe, even if they look the business and score more chicks than you do.

Rapper Machine Gun Kelly Is The Men’s Fashion Icon We Need Right Now
Rapper Machine Gun Kelly Is The Men’s Fashion Icon We Need Right Now

White rappers are associated more with beanies, bleach and bling than ~style~. Just because you’ve got bars and an ear for a beat doesn’t mean you’ve got taste, and many hip-hop artists fall into the trap of ‘more is more’ when it comes to fashion. Dropping bulk cash on designer brands and expensive accessories just to stunt on others falls flat when you can’t dress cohesively.Machine Gun Kelly (real name Colson Baker) may be cut from a different cloth, however. Not only is the 30-year-old responsible for the recent, high-profile revival of pop-punk and rap-rock in the modern musical landscape, but also for his creative yet stylish wardrobe. What sets MGK apart from his contemporaries? His willingness to experiment with new styles as well as a deep understanding of retro American fashion. Take this lowkey outfit he was spotted sporting while out on a date in New York with his partner, actress and model Megan Fox. Evoking Kurt Cobain during Nirvana’s early years, MGK rocks a Balmain cardigan sans shirt, stonewashed denim jeans and Brain Dead x Converse Chuck 70 High sneakers.

View this post on Instagram

A post shared by UpscaleHype (@upscalehype)

It’s a simple outfit that demonstrates a few core principles.Firstly, branding. Sure, it’s an expensive cardigan and limited-edition sneakers he’s rocking but they’re not so outrageously branded that it screams ‘I’m rich’. While MGK has plenty of designer brands in his wardrobe – and a quick scroll of his Instagram will show how eye-catching his tastes are – he tends to eschew anything that’s overly branded. Instead, he lets pieces speak for themselves.Secondly, he’s got his finger on the pulse in regards to the next big fashion trend: 80s Americana. Just as his recent musical pivot towards pop-punk has been inspired by popular 80s acts like Bad Religion, The Ramones and Screeching Weasel, MGK’s sartorial tastes also nod towards the sort of timeless fashion of that era, too – with a distinctly modern edge. As 2021 rolls on, this sort of suburban Americana throwback will continue to gain momentum… MGK’s cresting that wave.RELATED: ‘All American’ Style Tipped To Take 2021 By StormThirdly, and perhaps most importantly, he just doesn’t give a f*ck. Confidence is the most important ingredient when it comes to style, and MGK has that in spades. (It’s a punk thing, we guess.) It’s a lesson worth taking note of, no matter who you are or how you like to dress, frankly. Back yourself, and you’ll look good. Except maybe if you’re wearing Crocs.MGK recently released a film titled Downfalls High, a “first of its kind musical film experience” that complements his fifth studio album, Tickets To My Downfall. The ambitious, almost 50min-long project stars Chase Hudson and DMARGE fave Sydney Sweeney – you can watch it in full on YouTube.

Australian Fitness ‘Commando’ Shares Brutal Workout Only To Be Attempted By The Brave
Australian Fitness ‘Commando’ Shares Brutal Workout Only To Be Attempted By The Brave

In need of some fresh fitness advice and inspiration to give your stale workout routine the jumpstart it needs? Frankly, there’s only one man you should be turning to: Commando Steve.

The Australian Army’s former fitness instructor is no stranger to putting together full-body workouts that will push you to your absolute limit, and his latest is certainly no different. If you want to give it a go yourself, you’ll need to be someone of relatively good fitness.

Asking anyone who attempts it to perform as many rounds as possible (AMRAP) in 30 minutes, Steve’s workout is as follows:

  • 100 dumbbell snatch ‘buy in’. This means you complete the 100 DB snatches before the time starts, but you only need to perform them once through
  • 200m run
  • 5 dumbbell ground-to-floor lifts
  • 10 hand-release push-ups
  • 15 squats

Steve also gives this challenge an RPE rating (Rating of Perceived Exertion) 7-9 which, based on the modern-day interpretation of the scale, is right at the top end, meaning it’s very hard indeed.

We’d struggle just getting past the first 100 DB snatches, let alone attempting the rest, or even a second round. It’s safe to say, your arms will be cooked by the end of the 30-minute time limit.

A post shared by Commando Steve (@commandosteve)

As horrible as it sounds, however, there’s no denying this Commando Steve workout will make you stronger than ever if you perform it a few times and you stick to a calorie surplus diet – or help you lose body fat, if that’s your goal – and will help you obtain ‘boulder shoulders’ akin to Michael B. Jordan’s.

‘AMRAP’ can refer to either ‘as many rounds as possible’ or ‘as many reps as possible’ and is most commonly associated with HIIT (high-intensity interval training) workouts. Because you’re only given a time limit, the onus is on you to determine how many reps or rounds you complete, by adjusting your effort level.

In the case of Commando Steve’s workout, he adds in a follow-up post how much of this latest daily challenge you should be able to complete based on your ‘training age’.

  • Beginners should be completing a quarter – half of the challenge, and attempting it a minimum three times a week
  • Intermediate trainers should be looking at completing half – three quarters of the challenge and four sessions a week

Steve doesn’t reference advanced trainers, but we would assume that people in this category should be aiming to complete the full challenge, and training a minimum of six times a week.

Good luck!

What To Wear With A Brown Leather Jacket
What To Wear With A Brown Leather Jacket

When you think brown leather jacket on stylish men, you’ll often muster images of Hugh Jackman as Wolverine, Tom Cruise as Jack Reacher and even Brad Pitt as a Fight Clubber.

The brown leather jacket is a wardrobe of the rugged man, the biker man, the man who wears Hawaiian shirts on his Indian motorcycle. Get the picture? Well that’s all slowly changing.

Brands like Saint Laurent, The Kooples and Tom Ford are regularly adding both brown leather and brown suede jackets into their collections.

If you’re undecided on whether a brown leather jacket is for you, then read on. If you own a brown leather jacket and find yourself wondering what to wear with it, then read on too.

The Types Of Brown Leather Jackets

Men are spoilt for choice when it comes to leather jackets. In the modern wardrobe there are a handful of reliable styles that have been inspired by the vintage years and polished up for today’s needs. Think dressier and more fitted cuts as opposed to being purely functional.

Here are the leather jacket types you need to know.

Leather Bomber Jackets

As the most casual looking jacket of the bunch, the leather bomber is defined by its waist-length, collarless design. The jacket is often made from soft leather, which tends to be more malleable to give it a more relaxed look. Contrasting trim is another feature you’ll often find on leather bombers which usually mixes up the waist and sleeve cuffs for a succinct fit and finish. The hardware detailing on bombers are naturally minimal so expect a symmetrical zip up the front and possibly kangaroo-pouch side pockets or an arm patch pocket.

Leather Biker Jackets

Marlon Brando did it and now so can you. The leather biker jacket is defined by large lapels and a flared collar that can be snapped down for extra security. The style is defined by generous metallic hardware (studs, plugs and zips) and the front zipper is normally asymmetrical, allowing the wider side to fold in underneath its partner.

Leather Racer Jackets

The racer jacket is the most standard looking variant inspired by the world of motorsports and motorcycle racing. As such, the silhouette is streamlined and sits close to the body. Fastening is sorted with a little collar that snaps shut, or it can be without a collar at all. Straight zipped, they aren’t lined with plush fabric and have no lapels or extra hardware to flash polish up

Brown Leather Jacket & Jeans

A staple look for any man looking to rock a brown leather jacket is the leather-denim combo. It’s almost impossible to screw up with the exception of one rule: fitted denim only. Once you’ve accepted that golden rule, you can pair your brown leather jacket with anything from indigo to washed to black jeans. The same also goes for either ripped or selvedge jeans. Beckham is a common example of the brown leather jacket crew and you’ll often find him pairing it with black jeans when he takes the motorcycle out for a spin.

Brown Leather Jacket & T-Shirt

Brown leather jackets especially go well with tees due to their casual aesthetic. There’s really no limits when it comes to pairing a brown leather jackets with tees. Think band shirts, logo tees and go-to colours such as white, grey and blue. A shirt to avoid is probably softer colours as the look is meant to be masculine. Ever see a pink tee paired with a brown jacket? Neither have we. Stick to the proven tees and you’ll be fine. V-necks and scoop necks are best but you can also go for henley shirts like Ryan Gosling did in Drive.

Brown Leather Jacket & Shirt/Tie

The brown leather jacket can be dressed up in very cool ways should the occasion call for it. By simply wearing it over a white shirt and tie, you can score a sweet casual Friday option. In the colder seasons, be sure to layer up with knitwear or a cardigan. The only point to take note of here is to ensure your jacket isn’t too long.

Brown Leather Jacket & Casual Shirt

The casual button-up shirt is a winner in any man’s book but pair it with a brown leather jacket and you’ve got a cool retro vibe ready to go. Opt for shirts with patterns – flannel works best in this case or solid colours are also fine. Just be sure there’s some contrast between your shirt and the jacket as brown on brown isn’t exactly a flattering combination.

Brown Leather Jacket & Pants/Trousers

Men are spoilt for choice when it comes to pairing bottoms with a brown leather jacket. For trousers it’s best to go for grey blue or black especially if they’re tailored. For summer or the warmer months it’s a simple case of switching out the colours for white jeans or chinos. Remember, keep things slim and fitted and you’ll have a great smart casual look that can take you from the modern day office to the bar with ease.

Australian Expat Reveals The Truth About ‘Living The Dream’ In Bali Right Now
Australian Expat Reveals The Truth About ‘Living The Dream’ In Bali Right Now

If you don’t occasionally fantasise about swanning off to Bali, you probably aren’t working hard enough. But what many don’t realise is that beyond the veil it’s not all Bintangs and back massages either.Living in Bali during a pandemic is quite the surreal experience, various Australian expatriates have told DMARGE.This comes after last week discussion exploded online around westerners living like royalty in Bali (on a shoestring budget, no less), as well as concerns around the logic of deporting digital nomads bragging about this very lifestyle (at a time when Indonesia is desperate for tourists).

To get the on-ground take on what it’s like to ‘live the dream’ right now, as well as to answer such burning questions as: “Is there Crossfit in Bali?” and: “How does it really feel to do timesheets by the pool,” DMARGE spoke to Peter Hibberd, Executive Creative Director at Ogilvy who has become quite the WFH (work from hotel) connoisseur.Hibberd has been “living and WFH (Working From Hotel) in Bali,” he told DMARGE, “since March 2020 as soon as the first Covid-19 lockdown was announced.”“However, I’m not a tourist. I’m actually a legal resident in Indonesia with full KITAS (working permit) living in Jakarta, so for me it’s like running the company in Sydney from Byron Bay, and instead of my apartment, my kickass boutique hotel has been the base of operations. There is currently a huge uproar about ‘digital nomads’ in Bali and because I pay tax as a resident I thankfully sidestep that social stigma even though, to any passer by, local or otherwise, I’m another Bule’ with a laptop.”

“I love living here and WFH but I’m a legal Indonesian resident. There are very strict laws when it comes to working remotely in Indonesia and they enforce them.”

The most surreal thing about being in Bali during the Covid-19 pandemic, Hibberd told DMARGE, is “stark empty streets.”

“Just like any other major metropolitan area, the surreal reality is… dead silence. The streets of Seminyak are like a ghost town still to this day most nights. There’s maybe 10% of places actually open. A usual trip from Canggu to Seminyak (6.5km) is usually an hour or more, now, 15 mins.”Hibberd also told us: “there are still some wonderfully surreal things happening even though the island is under the influence of Covid. It’s the ‘Island of the Gods’, only one of the 17,000 odd Indonesian Islands of the archipelago. For example, I sat and watched an international concert pianist on a white grand piano on the edge of the cliffs at Uluwatu as the sun set.”

Hibberd also told us about a local construction worker who went viral “for driving his scooter with up to six dogs as passengers.”

Alongside this, there has been a shift in demographics, with “a mass exodus of foreigners back to their local countries due to the fears of the pandemic.” This has led to the “oversupply of Australians on footy trips and French escaping the winter [being] fully replaced by Russians, who we can only assume get a free ticket to Bali with every second bottle of vodka purchase at the local Moscow bottle-O.”

“There’s more Russians than an 80’s Bond third act.”

The best bit about being in Bali right now, in Hibberd’s opinion, is the freedom. “Due to strictly enforced Covid policies, as per any usual safety enforcement, it actually allows freedom. It’s quiet. I’ve been coming to Bali every couple of weekends for four years and it’s so empty it’s like a country town.”Hibberd also told us that, much as he’d love to pop our vision of the ‘jealousy industrial complex’, living in Bali right now, for his money, is pretty damn enviable: “Prepare yourself. Take a deep breath and let the envy wash over you like a peeling 5 footer at Old Man’s, there’s nothing you can do about it. You’ve been warned 3, 2,1.”

“The Island is its own quarantine zone. There is minimal domestic flying inside Indonesia, so the cases have been relatively low and stable. Therefore, wear a mask and the cafes are open to sit, chat and work, the fresh rich java coffee flows freely and the beaches are a breath of fresh air to cleanse the lungs as the sun sets.”

“Even the surf breaks are pretty empty comparatively. I hear on a good day you can be one of five people at Uluwatu on a peeling 6ft break, one of which is Kelly Slater [when he was there, anyway]. On top of all that, there are insane deals at hotels large and small, villas are desperate for occupancy and if you thought drinking was cheap in Bali before, now it’s almost a steal.”“Beyond the regular coastal areas, Ubud, the vegan loving, hippy yoga retreat centre of Eat Pray Love fame, is really empty. So forget booking three months in advance to eat fine dining at Locavore, a call that day and you’ll generally get you a seat. Even if I ran out of things to do on the main island of Bali, (which I haven’t), I’ve jumped on a boat to Gili to finally take my deep diving license to chill out with turtles, manta and sharks at the bottom of the ocean floor then skip over to Nusa Penida and Lembongan for some of the quintessential IG location shots.”

“All three of the smaller islands are empty of tourists so wherever we went, we had the place to ourselves. I think a long ship diving tour of Komodo is on the cards next.”

Hibberd also told us that what he has found challenging is keeping himself fit – something you might assume would be a piece of piss without the hassle of a commute. Au contraire: “Working out at Wunderlust pushing PBs with Dave Driskell every day [has been the most challenging aspect to living in Bali],” Hibberd said.RELATED: I Went To Bali’s Most Instagram-Famous Oasis & It Was A Complete Disaster“Most people say with an air of bluster, ‘Oh, if I had six months off, I could just go to the gym and get ripped like Chris Hemsworth, but you know, I got a job and….  *insert whatever other excuse they have for not actually doing the work*’. Well, it’s COVID, you’re generally locked down, now’s the freaking time! I’m definitely not a big guy (a 40-year-old very skinny ectomorph) but since lockdown, I’ve gained 14kgs and gone down to 16% body fat. It’s a work in progress, but if not now, when?”

“In all seriousness, just like any other place the world over, the challenging part of being in Bali is not seeing my family and friends in Australia. Thankfully my kids are with me here but there are many that have been separated for months. I empathise with many across the world separated from the ones we love. I’m not sure you could find a better place to sit the pandemic out, but family and friends are what really matters.”

Hibberd also told us that even from a visitor’s perspective, “you can really tell the locals are hurting,” with 80% of the entire island’s revenue [usually] derived from tourism. “That’s crippling. The best we can do is support local businesses by eating and drinking and be generous to those we interact with.”Hibberd plans to stay as long as possible. He told DMARGE: “I don’t expect any real change in policy at the office until there’s certainty of safety for all. So I’m currently negotiating buying property here. Due to the drastic drop in tourists, the prices on land are very good but buying property in Bali is nothing like Australia with completely different laws and regulations for expats.”Not every Australian expat has had the same experience, however. An anonymous source told DMARGE his plans were scuppered by The Bat Kiss: “My partner and I came here for a job in the tourism industry, which was great timing (not). We arrived in late January to start work and by the middle of March Bali’s tourism began to suffer due to COVID. This meant that we stopped work because of the rapid decline in tourism.”“It has been very challenging having no work. But the most difficult thing has been to witness the devastation this pandemic has caused Bali and its local people. Very minimal tourism has meant that local businesses have been un-able to support themselves during these very tough times resulting in people being forced to travel back to their villages and/or islands to find work again.”

“We have been here just over 1 year and are planning to come back to Aus next month.”

“Regarding the job luckily we had savings and both me and my girlfriend’s parents helped support us any way they could while we’ve been here. We were unable to find another job as working here requires a KITAS visa, which requires the company you work for to sign you on and do all the logistics with Indonesian Immigration.”“There’s definitely a lot of expats that have experienced the same, whether they be holidaymakers who got stuck here or big business owners that have also suffered from the lack of tourism. Everybody has definitely been affected here one way or another.”

As Hibberd sums things up: “The old gag would have been; ‘There are less Australians in Australia.’ Not anymore.”“I actually haven’t lived in Australia for 7 years so I’m not 100% up to date with the situation on Flinders St, but Bali is still, well, Bali. If you haven’t visited yet, once this pandemic subsides, you really should. The people are lovely and welcoming in general if you respect their culture. They call it the Island of the Gods as it wears its religion on its sleeve and it’s beautiful to watch and admire.”

“There are plenty of tourist traps to fall into that are just disrespectful like any foreign country, but it has a mystical playfulness that allows you to enjoy the tropical weather in very affordable luxury. Get past the classic Kuta bar cliches and you can discover a rich island worth exploring.”

As for your chances of joining the likes of Hibberd? Perhaps the signs are more positive than you think: “The IT department has been prompting CEO’s the world over to be more flexible with office space for decades, but it took a pandemic to make them change,” Hibberd said. “I assume every CFO (including mine) is currently doing the math on square footage at the office and costs associated with WFH on a regular basis even when this pandemic subsides.”“Our office implemented WFH policy in one day and fully operational the next. I’m lucky/grateful/worked bloody hard with the team to keep all 300 staff employed and not had to fire anyone at the office.”Reports from paradise, indeed.According to Bali.com, “International tourism has been put on a halt since March 2020 by stopping the visa free regulations, that allowed visitors from 160 countries to come to Indonesia without a visa. This left a little door open for the Bali lovers to come, because until 31st December it was still possible to apply for a Business or Social Visa with the help of an agent.”“But due to the outbreaks of new mutations, Indonesia has now implemented a stricter lockdown until 8th of February, which will most likely be extended.”“We don’t expect Bali to open for ‘normal tourism’ (visa free or visa on arrival) soon. We expect however, that soon it will be possible to come to Bali again by applying for a business or social visa like it has been before the 31st of December.”“In any case, foreigners holding a KITAS, KITAP (work permit, residency) or with diplomatic visas, can still enter Indonesia.”Indonesia hit 1 million recorded Covid-19 cases in January, “just a day after President Joko Widodo said the country had ‘successfully’ handled the pandemic,” the ABC reports.
