6 Ridiculous Hotel Guest Requests That Were Actually Granted
6 Ridiculous Hotel Guest Requests That Were Actually Granted

Most are content with a king bed and a corner room. Throw in a free breakfast and you’re in 5-star territory. But for a certain class of discerning guest, a successful hotel stay requires a concierge to go above and beyond the standard call of duty.

The Points Guy rounded-up some of the most ridiculous hotel guest requests ever recorded, from bizarre baths to extinct reptiles to framed celebrity photos. Check out some of our favourites below.

A Pillow Fort

Hotel Guest RequestsDenver-based businessman Sean Fitzsimons is something of an artiste when it comes to hotel guest requests. His successful demands include a pillow fort, an image of Grandma Winslow from Family Matters, and three pictures of Donald Trump looking confused. So far his only regret was asking the staff to draw a picture of what they thought he looked like. “It got so awkward,” he said. “I’m pretty sure I weirded her out. So, I was like, ‘I can’t ever come back here again.’”

A Bathtub Of Goat’s Milk

Hotel Guest RequestsLegend has it that bathing in virgin blood is the magical secret to maintaining a youthful appearance. We don’t recall any similar legends about wild goat’s milk, yet that’s exactly what one guest requested from Sean Davoren, head butler at The Savoy in London. The milk itself cost around US$75, but because it had to be sourced from Wales and transported via taxi, the final cost clocked in around US$800. It then took 30 bottles of heated Evian water to wash the goat’s milk bath off the customer.

A Photo Of Nicolas Cage From Con Air

Hotel Guest RequestsIn 2015, a visitor to San Antonio, Texas posted images of an amusing exchange with her hotel’s concierge. “I had the funniest hotel concierge EVER during a boring business trip,” she said. “Thank you so much, Ramon!” Ramon is indeed a hospitality legend in the making. Not only did he fulfill her original request for a framed image of Nic Cage in Con Air, he and his fellow staffers fulfilled two more requests to Cageify the room, and ended her stay with a final, unrequested Cageification.

A Towel Folded In The Shape Of An Elephant

Hotel Guest RequestsThe staff of the W Seattle will never forget this pachydermic request: “Please build a pillow fort on our bed with 5 additional pillows. We would also appreciate a towel folded into the shape of an elephant. If possible, we would enjoy a sexy picture of some fruit on the night table.” The W nailed the fort and the elephant. No word on the sexy fruit.

A Dinosaur

Hotel Guest RequestsIn August of 2011, redditor jiggernauts attended a wedding in Ontario, Canada. When booking accommodations at the Monte Carlo Inn, he made an unusual appeal in the “Special Requests” section of his online reservation: “Can I please have a baby Stegosaurus in my room? I will bring the food and water, and I will take care of him. Thanks.” Though dinos are a scarce resource in 21st century Canada, the Monte Carlo came through with the little guy above.

Framed Photos Of Jeff Goldblum

Hotel Guest RequestsSeth Freedland and his girlfriend Amy Marsh undoubtedly made the days of the staff at Huntley Hotel in Santa Monica, California, when they asked for their room to be filled with photos of Jeff Goldblum. “Jeff Goldblum is my girlfriend’s celebrity crush,” Freedland told The Huffington Post. “Specifically, she’s a big fan of Independence Day-era ‘heroic Goldblum.’ I’m more a Big Chill Goldblum man myself, but you really can’t go wrong.” Sure enough, the hotel complied with the snaps and the story went viral.

This Is The Age At Which People Are Least Happy With Their Lives
This Is The Age At Which People Are Least Happy With Their Lives

life satisfaction

Earlier this year, the 2017 World Happiness Report named Norway the world’s happiest country. We’ve learned how selfies, foods, drinking, and architecture can make you happier. And now, a survey of 160 countries has found the ages at which people are least happy with their lives.

The study looked at the links between subjective wellbeing, health, and age around the world. In wealthy, English-speaking countries like the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, and Australia, a dip in life satisfaction occurs between the ages of 45 and 54. Happiness levels begin to climb again after 54.

Why do so many people hit a rough patch in middle age? Professor Angus Deaton, one of the study’s co-authors, speculates that the decline occurs because it’s a period in which many experience higher levels of stress, worry, and anger.

“This finding is almost expected,” he said. “This is the period at which wage rates typically peak and is the best time to work and earn the most, even at the expense of present well-being, so as to have increased wealth and well-being later in life.”

Along with economics, healthcare may be a factor. Wealthy western countries have better healthcare systems, making them better able to alleviate some of the problems of ageing. In many poorer countries, the U-shaped pattern for life satisfaction does not appear – happiness simply declines with age.

Professor Deaton said:

“Economic theory can predict a dip in well-being among the middle age in high-income, English-speaking countries. What is interesting is that this pattern is not universal.

Other regions, like the former Soviet Union, have been affected by the collapse of communism and other systems. Such events have affected the elderly who have lost a system that, however imperfect, gave meaning to their lives, and, in some cases, their pensions and health care.”

When the researchers looked at happiness and mortality, they discovered a factor that appears to be key to longevity: a sense of purpose. Older people who feel their life has purpose are significantly less likely to die at younger ages.

“Even though the results do not unequivocally show that eudemonic well-being is causally linked with mortality, the findings do raise intriguing possibilities about positive well-being being implicated in reduced risk to health,” concluded the authors.

One way to boost your happiness (and your lifespan along with it): spend money on experiences, not things.

Confirmed: iPhone 8 Will Be Waterproof & Have Wireless Charging

iPhone 8iPhone 8 rumours started surfacing in 2016, with whispers of curved OLED displays, stainless steel casing, and the long-awaited ‘edge-to-edge’ screen. Now Robert Hwang, the CEO of iPhone manufacturer Wistron Corp, has confirmed two of the most pervasive rumours: the iPhone 8 will be waterproof and feature wireless charging capabilities.

“Assembly process for the previous generations of [iPhones] have not changed much, though new features like waterproof and wireless charging now require some different testing, and waterproof function will alter the assembly process a bit,” Hwang told reporters after the company’s annual shareholders’ meeting this week.

Apple’s 10th anniversary device will also reportedly swap aluminium chassis for glass and boast an “almost” bezel-less face. A vertically-aligned rear camera, shared in leaked images by reddit user kamikasky, seems to support speculation that the phone will support augmented reality.

Rumours continue to swirl that we’ll be getting the curved edge-to-edge display, which would likely integrate the home button, touch ID (or a new front-facing facial recognition laser scanner), and front camera into the screen itself.

Stay tuned for more Apple news and leaks as they drop.

Cool Balcony Garden Ideas To Transform Your Man Cave
Cool Balcony Garden Ideas To Transform Your Man Cave

Balcony gardens are nothing new; they’re great for gents without traditional yards to tinker in and they add a touch of serenity to metropolitan pads.

Even those with shoebox sized balconies can to bring a bit of green into their lives. So, how exactly does one create a manscaped balcony garden?

You can still have it all in a balcony garden, albeit on a smaller scale. Think water features, quaint benches and lush greenery.

Whether you’re looking to get away from your better half, retreat into a book or simply get a dose of Vitamin D, a lush outdoor balcony will quickly become your new fave spot. No backyard? No worries. If your green thumb is itching but you have no lawn to speak of, there is still hope.

Check out our guide to creating a balcony garden that would make your mamma proud. And unlike big backyard gardens that become more of a chore than a joy, small outdoor gardens will give you just the right amount of greenery in an intimate and manageable way.

Why Do It?

Words of encouragement

One major advantage to balcony gardens is that you don’t have to worry about grass and lawnmowers. AstroTurf is popular among hipsters and interior design circles, so consider this flooring option and throw in a decorative flamingo or two for good measure.

Consider The Climate

Keep them lush all year round

There are few things more disheartening than a dead plant. Save yourself the heartache (and the wasted dosh) and buy plants suited to your locale. Speak to the sales assistant at Bunnings or your local nursery staff for expert advice.

A balcony that gets full afternoon sun will require different plants to ones in full shade, or one that get a lot of wind, so you may need to experiment with both indoor and outdoor plants to get the right mix for your balcony’s ‘microclimate’.

If you’re dealing with pockets of full sun, go wild with grasses, herbs, morning glory (the vine, not the other thing) and succulents. Save ferns, lilies, begonias and English Ivy for shady nooks.

Perennials vs Annuals

Be selective in your greenery

The battle between perennials and annuals has been raging since Adam and Eve debated their merits in the Garden of Eden. Not really, but the truth is, a mix of both varieties will be needed to ensure your garden remains lush at all times.

Even perennials that remain dormant most of the year provide interesting greenery and blooms of colour in spring. Also, perennials tend to be larger, so they add dimension and visual interest to your garden. Whichever plants you choose, group them together so they receive the same amount of light and moisture, but play around with heights.

For a functional balcony garden, go the citrus route and plant some lemons or oranges in a sunny spot.

Become A Pot Expert

Only use the good stuff

Skimping on pots is a big ’no no’. There are plenty of cheap and nasty options out there (we’re looking at you, plastic!), but pots made out of a porous material like terra cotta will offer better drainage than inferior varieties. Never, EVER, use containers without drainage holes. Your plants will be more susceptible to root rot. Maybe you’re using some old pottery, in which case you’ll need to whip out the drill and bore a few holes in the bottom.

Soil For The Soul

Different soils for different plants

It’s tempting to buy inexpensive all-purpose soil that promises to work in all conditions. Don’t do it. You’ll be out of pocket in the long run after your plants flounder in sub-par soil.

Use soil specifically suited to the type of plant you’re growing. It’s okay to mix in some all-purpose soil to make to good stuff stretch further, but make sure the ratio is skewed in the good latter’s favour. Sprinkle mulch on top of soil to ensure moisture retention.

Furniture Swagger

Add a dash of flair

Most balconies will afford room for at least one chair, and if you’re lucky, a table and chair set might even fit, making the space more useable and visitor-friendly.

If you have a large, wrap-around type balcony, go the full Monty with a hammock and outdoor cushions.

Meanwhile, a wood ladder, bookshelf or old fashioned bar cart on wheels will become eye-catching planters.

Sandstone, timber accents and other natural focal points will boost your gardens lush vibe. A hardwood bench is a good starting point, and will lessen that concrete jungle feeling most inner-city balconies have. Scrap wood (untreated is best), positioned right, can also work to transform a ‘pretty’ garden into a masculine oasis.

Add pops of colour with bright cushions, bold patterned pots and decorative twine hangers, and use wooden crates or old tyres for rustic raised bed/seating hybrids

The balcony garden doubles as a romance hot spot after dark. Scatter a generous amount of candle lanterns and a smattering of fairy lights for seduction success.

Incorporate elements matching your interiors for a seamless transition from indoor to outdoor. Al fresco living never looked so good.

Watering Solution

Be a good water boy

Don’t forget the h2O. Follow the plant’s watering guidelines, but remember that high wind areas will demand extra water – once a day in summer to be safe. Plus, terra cotta pots need a drink more often than their plastic and fibreglass counterparts.

Finally, look up. Limited square footage means that every available inch should be utilised. Hanging pots (or garden boxes) and vertical gardens are all on the menu.

A Futuristic Luxury Man Cave Is Coming To Sydney
A Futuristic Luxury Man Cave Is Coming To Sydney

The Paragon of Pyrmont will be a residential name to remember when it officially completes construction in 2019.

Boasting serious luxury credentials, the slick apartment block is aiming to capture a slice of Sydney’s lucrative real estate scene with never-before-seen appointments set across a five-level terrace townhouse.

The most stunning feature is the private garage which has enough space for two cars, bikes, a 1,000 bottle wine rack, storage and more. Alternatively, owners with little baggage can opt to turn their garage space into a slick lounge with a car forming their centrepiece. And yes, there is a private lift to ferry occupants across the five levels if spiral stairs aren’t your thing (shame on you).

Other fine appointments include a 5.5m high hallway to greet guests complete with polished concrete floors. Meanwhile level 2 can be configured as a second bedroom or living room with allocations for a study nook and another private ensuite bathroom. Those in terraces 10 – 21 will also come with a private balcony connected to the main bedroom.

Stepping into level 3 will reveal the master bedroom wing which extends the full width of the terrace so that owners can use the entire floor plan to their liking. This level comes complete with stunning private bathrooms that feature circular bath tubs and Italian marble mosaics.

More living quarters spill into level 4 alongside the kitchen which boasts Rogerseller-style ‘touch activated’ cabi-netry to maximise all available spaces. Heading to the very top at level 5 will reveal a landscaping sanctuary in the heart of the city thanks to a gas BBQ and fridge set amongst the lush greenery and skyline views.

The people behind this bold project come from Thirdi Group who employed the architectural and design services of big name players, SJB. The developers are also currently in talks with Tesla to become one of the first Australian medium density developments to install ‘Tesla PowerWalls’ and ‘Tesla PowerPacks’. This feature will give owners the ability to store power and potentially return it to the grid for incentives.

We’ll be sure to keep a close eye on this one as it begins construction this month. Those keen can register their interest here

Cool Melbourne Date Ideas To Satisfy Every Type Of Lover
Cool Melbourne Date Ideas To Satisfy Every Type Of Lover

You’ve seen it all before. Some snotty writer from an online publication telling people where they should take their potential significant other in the hopes that they’ll become a significant other.

The result? You don’t read past the first par because a ‘picnic and bike ride’ is quite a shitty idea in hindsight – and the writer’s probably single and writing from a dungeon. Thankfully we prefer basements and also know a thing or two about polygamy chivalry in the modern age. Here are Melbourne’s coolest date ideas based on the type of person your date is.

The Old School Lover

Astor Theatre

For the traditionalist there’s no better spot to take a date in Melbourne than at St Kilda Pier. Plan your timing right and the sun may even come out to play so that all you’ll have to worry about is getting to know your date. If it’s theatrics you’re after then drop into Astor Theatre, the city’s only classic single screen movie theatre. Both are conveniently located in St Kilda.

The Fitness Junkie

Abbotsford Convent

So you’re dating a self-professed adrenalin junkie. Well you better get your bearings right and treat them to a date they won’t forget anytime soon. Try a spot of rock climbing At Bayside Rock Climbing or a scenic run around Abbotsford Convent. Loser buys dinner.

The Foodie Hypebeast

Burch & Purchese

Foodies are notoriously picky when it comes to food so make sure you impress them with a visit to Melbourne’s sweets and dessert mecca known as Burch & Purchese. If it’s a taste of adventure you’re after then sign up with Secret Foodies, a collective who stage impromptu dinners at some of the city’s most eclectic locations. You don’t know where, you don’t know when, but when that SMS comes in on the day summoning your presence, you better be ready to grab your date for a dining experience.

The Introverted

NGV International

For those who revel in peace, quiet and minimal human interaction there’s only two places to hit up with a date and that’s NGV International for a stint of art and the Melbourne Observatory for a quiet night of star spotting.

The Hipster

Magic Mountain Saloon

With boundless laneways to explore and constantly changing artwork, Melbourne city itself is your playground so use it to your advantage whether it’s a walk down Duckboard Place, Hosier and Rutledge lanes, Centre Place, Flinders Court, Union Lane or Presgrave Place. When you’ve had enough exercise for the day, create some more magic at Magic Mountain Saloon for an unforgettable late night bar and eatery experience. Magic Mountain Saloon serves up salty, sweet and spicy delights, beers on tap and plenty of Melbourne hipster fun.

The High Maintenance

Werribee Park

Stroll Through Werribee Park against the backdrop of a Victorian era estate better known as Werribee Park Mansion. We promise it’s Instagram worthy and will put a smile on every high maintenance date you have in mind. When that’s all done, dinner calls at one of the city’s highest points at Eureka 89 for fine dining with a view.

The Drinker

Siglo rooftop

Take your date somewhere different with a cocktail making class from Melbourne’s Salona. At just $49 for a two hour lesson, she’ll have the greatest time of her life whilst learning something. If it’s a more relaxing time you’re after, hit up rooftop bar Siglo for some wine and one-on-one time.

The Night Owl

Curtain House Rooftop Cinema

Not one for calling it a night? Drop by the Curtain House Rooftop Cinema for a decent flick before retreating back to St. Jerome’s – The Hotel for a spot of luxury glamping on the rooftop. The stars have done half the job for you.

The Early Dozer

Darling Cafe

Dates don’t often happen in mornings but if yours is an early riser and prefers a courtship over the sound of coffee machines then Darling is the spot to be. Great espressos and Instagram-friendly food which tastes as good as it looks wins out. And hopefully you will too.

The NFI Lover

Go hard or go home

When you have NFI what your date is into then it’s time to go big or go home. No seriously, invite them over to your place for a home cooked meal. There’s nothing sexier than a man who can handle his ladle and work his way into a date’s stomach.

Byredo Bottles The Scent Of Ikea With Unexpected Collab
Byredo Bottles The Scent Of Ikea With Unexpected Collab

Byredo x IkeaLove the smell of flat pack furniture and meatballs? You’re in luck, because Byredo’s newest fragrance collaborator is your favourite purveyor of affordable Scandinavian home goods. The Byredo x Ikea collection is set to launch in 2019 with “a democratic approach to smell.”

Byredo founder Ben Gorham took to Instagram to announce the collaboration with an image captioned “SCALE.” Ikea made its own announcement via a blog post promising… well, we’re not actually sure. “It’s still a surprise,” says the post, “but we can all expect something scented.”

“I feel people just don’t reflect enough when it comes to scent, but smell is a very relevant part of our life and also the home,” Gorham said in a statement. “To collaborate on this idea of ‘invisible design’ with Ikea, getting people to think about smell is very exciting. I enjoy their openness to new ideas and the experimental nature of what we’re doing.”

There are few hints about what the eau de Ikea will smell like, thought the blog suggests it might involve the retailer’s Swedish cinnamon buns. For his part, Gorham says the collaborators are “trying to develop a ton of smells enforcing the idea that everyone has a different relationship to it, and nothing is right or wrong.”

Byredo is widely known for its pricey fragrance products (US$80 for a candle, US$150 or more for a perfume), making it an unusual partner for the notoriously-affordable Ikea. We’re left with two scenarios: either the collaboration will successfully “democratise” smell with an unexpectedly economical price for Byredo, or smelling like Ikea will cost more than shopping there. We’ll find out which it is when the collection drops in 2019.

The World's Most Iconic Rally Cars Are Heading To Auction
The World's Most Iconic Rally Cars Are Heading To Auction

These cars might not look like anything out of the ordinary, but to the trained eye these are priceless machines of a bygone era in rally. True legends of the motorsport is probably a better label for it than glorified hatchbacks and modified grocery-getters.

And with that little detail out of the way, a collection of the world’s rarest rally cars from the golden era of Group B rally will be heading to auction in August. Bonhams will be looking after the sale of this elusive lot which forms part of a single collector’s (see: lucky bastard) garage.

The Monterey Car Week will showcase seven Group B Homologation cars, all in their original and untainted condition from the factory. These models include a 1975 Lancia Stratos HF Stradale, 1983 Lancia Rally 037 Stradale, 1985 Peugeot 205 Turbo 16, 1985 Audi Sport Quattro S1, 1985 Lancia Delta S4 Stradale, 1986 Ford RS200 and the 1986 Ford RS200 Evolution – one of only 24 samples built in the world.

And what can one expect to fork out for such a collection of rare road cars born from the gravel? Well for starters the RS200 Evolution last traded hands for US$600,000 alone in 2014 so it’s likely the entire collection could reach well into the millions.

Those keen to get behind the wheel of one (or all) of these beasts can register their interest with Bonhams where each car will be offered without reserve.
