What To Consider When Pursuing Casual Relationships
What To Consider When Pursuing Casual Relationships

It’s a very common ‘advanced’ problem – “So I got good at meeting girls, I’ve learnt a lot and am having fun, but I’ve met this one great girl. I really like spending time with her and don’t want to end it, but I also don’t want to be in a relationship just yet” – I hear it all the time.

To many guys, being able to casually date a girl is the pinnacle of dating. It’s having their moist delicious cake and eating it too. To those experienced in it though, the reality is a little different, generally not quite so simple, and maybe not even so glamorous. It can be complicated, a bit tough, but also great and an exceptional teacher when done correctly.

So how do you go about setting up a relationship that isn’t a relationship?

Here are 5 things to consider when setting up more casual style relationships.

#1 Know Why You Want It

When I ask guys why they want to keep things casual with a girl, why they don’t want to play the monogamy game just yet, most can’t articulate a reason better than “I just don’t want to”.

Have you spent too much time in relationships in the past? Did you decide to dedicate this year to your own personal growth? Do you just simply not believe in monogamy? You need to know WHY and more, you need to stick to it. Most guys are so wishy-washy on their reason(s) for keeping things casual that as soon as the girl starts to pull away, or she wants something else, they fret and agree to a relationship that their heart isn’t truly in. Generally, a choice that takes little time to regret.

#2 Focus On Life Advancement

“I want to meet other women” is the surest way to send any woman running. When explaining why you want to keep things casual, do not focus on the ‘hooking up with others’ part; instead focus on your growth, on improving your life, on maintaining your freedom, on maintaining HER freedom. Focus on your desire to rise above mediocre and to be different from what most people settle for. She should always be your #1 when it comes to other women.

#3 Don’t Dump But Don’t Conceal

Men often hear my advice on this, and then within moments of meeting a girl, or on a first date, they dump all of this onto her. They go into anti-relationship rants and then wonder why the girl pulls away. When two ‘normal’ people meet, they open up gradually.

You’re under no obligation to immediately declare everything about your intentions. She certainly isn’t either. But having said that, you also don’t want to be lying (both for the moral reasons and for the inevitable head-fuck that it will create). And you don’t want to wait too long before she understands where you’re at and what you want in dating – generally the earlier the better (and easier).

Personally I advise alluding to it even within the first interaction, just don’t dump it all on her. Ultimately, the more comfortable you are with it, and the more certain you are of your reasons, the more she will be too.

#4 Taste Of Your Own Medicine

The amount of guys that I meet who tell me that they want to casually date, or to have an open relationship while having no idea of the emotional implications, does make me shake my head sometimes. Personally I believe that as men, we are much more jealous, especially sexually, and when a girl that you like, or even *gasp* love, hooks up with another guy, or even just flirts with him – that shit will sting.

But what is good for the goose is good for the gander, you cannot get angry at her for this, especially if you’re the one keeping it casual. As the scouts say – be prepared.

#5 Offer Her Real Value

If you’re not in a relationship, but you’re also not inspiring her, not having fun with her, not making her laugh, not giving her good sex, etc. why is she going to stay with you? You need to offer her some VALUE! If she is an attractive girl who other men are dying to offer a stable relationship to, what is it about you that is going to make her stick around.

It’s not about manipulation, it’s about being valuable enough that she WANTS to be around you. If you don’t know your (what they call in business) UVP, or Unique Value Proposition – that is to say, what makes you different, special, stand out – you’re going to struggle to maintain an open style of relationship.

Sexy Face Or Body? Scientists Uncover What Men Prefer The Most
Sexy Face Or Body? Scientists Uncover What Men Prefer The Most

Physical attraction is a touchy subject at the best of times but it’s safe to assume that most of us would love a partner that is physically attractive. Unfortunately, the world doesn’t work that way and the chances of you (us) hooking up with a Scarlett Johansson are near-zero. The answer? We compromise by choosing a mate that possesses some but not all of the traits we’re most attracted to.

It’s an interesting psychological process which American researchers wanted to take a closer look at, so they devised a study which analysed how humans trade one characteristic for another in the game of love. What they discovered about men was interesting.

Men who were given the chance to ‘design’ their perfect partner for a long term relationship overwhelmingly chose an attractive face over an attractive body. Not surprisingly, men who designed their partner for a short term fling chose a hot body over an attractive face. That latter result however was based on a ‘point budget’ system.

The point budget system devised by Carin Perilloux of Southwestern University in Texas and Jaime Cloud of Western Oregon University sees a limited number of points allocated to the 250 male and female participants. These men and women were tasked with imagining they were single before being given the chance to design their ideal partner of the opposite sex.

Each volunteer was presented with a list of physical traits of which half were facial (eyes, nose, hair, complexion, smile) and the other half body-related (height, muscle, breast size, chest size, waist size, hip size). Participants were then asked to give each of these traits a rating from 0 to 10 depending on what they valued most. Giving a full 10 score for every trait was impossible as there were only limited points available to each participant – a budget – meaning they had to compromise in their ratings and prioritise their preferences.

Whether it’s a short term or long term relationship, male volunteers were found to prioritise an attractive face over an attractive body. The only scenario in which the body trumped the face was when male participants allocated with a smaller budget of points were asked to design the perfect partner for a short term fling. In other words men with more points to work with still chose an attractive face even for short term relationships.

The researchers believe that this behaviour in men seeking long term relationships reflects how we subconsciously judge a female’s long term reproductive potential. More specifically, a female’s long term reproductive potential could be better communicated through facial traits which includes complexion and ageing cues like wrinkles when compared to bodily traits. This, the researchers claim, is why men prefer a more facially attractive female for long term relationships.

Whilst psychologists have been aware of this for a while, it’s the first time a study has revealed a man’s competitiveness in a mating market which allows for limited preferences.

And women? They were found to be less judgemental according to the evolutionary history of humans. “Women have had less call to attend to cues to a man’s fertility,” the report from Psychology Today says.

“There is also little reason to suspect that a man’s future or current fertility is better advertised by his facial or bodily traits. Therefore, it shouldn’t be surprising that women’s preferences don’t vary with relationship type or budget.”

The real question is: Does this study reflect your preference on the perfect long term partner?

Doing Cardio This Way Won’t Diminish Your Gains, Say Researchers
Doing Cardio This Way Won’t Diminish Your Gains, Say Researchers

Curvaceous… calves. Corpulent quads. Glistening glutes. Hot hamstrings. When you get psyched up after an intense lower-body gym session, it’s tempting to finish it off with a triumphant run home, Queen’s ‘We Are The Champions’ blasting in your ears.

Or is that just us?

Either way, scientists have bad news for those masochists who like to do resistance and cardio training one after the other. The headline is this: don’t do it on the same day. Or if you are going to do so, follow the following guidelines to keep your gains intact.

  • Irrespective of the intensity of either, always do endurance training prior to resistance training, if undertaking them both on the same day is unavoidable.
  • Always leave at least half a day of recovery in between training sessions.
  • Pay attention to the intensity, volume and speed at which you are training, and adjust them accordingly (i.e. consult a qualified personal trainer or the handy flow chart included in this scientific review before relying on your gut and ‘laissez-faire’ attitude…).

James Cook University scientists came up with these guidelines in their review paper, Training Considerations for Optimising Endurance Development: An Alternate Concurrent Training Perspective,’ published in the latest issue of the Sports Medicine journal.

The study built upon existing scientific literature, which had already established that resistance training, such as weight lifting, may harm performance in endurance training when the two are combined in close proximity.

A post shared by Sergi Constance (@sergiconstance) on

“Based on previous evidence, we suspect that if appropriate recovery is not accounted for between each training mode, it may impair endurance development,” JCU’s Dr Kenji Doma wrote in the review paper.

Dr Doma then said that the physiological stress caused by a standard resistance training session of 40 to 60 minutes can last for several days post-exercise (a marked difference to a typical endurance training bout, after which a full recovery is expected within 24 hours).

“We wanted to increase the awareness of resistance training-induced fatigue in the hope of encouraging coaches to think about aspects such as the order of the training, the recovery period, training intensity, etc. With this new work, we think we now have a roadmap for them to follow,” (Dr Doma).

His review paper found several training variables that may influence how resistance training affects the quality of your overall endurance performance.

As we mentioned earlier, these variables include intensity, volume, speed and recovery, as well as the order in which the workouts are completed (as mentioned above, the review found that it’s better to do your endurance workout first if you are going to do it on the same day as a resistance session).

“By understanding the influence these variables have, it means that both resistance and endurance training can be prescribed in such a way that minimises fatigue between modes of training, which could optimise the quality of endurance training sessions,” (Dr Doma).

As reported by Science Daily, “The researchers have (also) produced flowcharts providing practical guides for improving concurrent training and optimising endurance development.”

Particularly important, Dr Doma reportedly said, is that fatigue is monitored when dabbling in ‘concurrent training’ and—crucially—that different periods of rest are enforced after different levels of either endurance or resistance training.

“One of the easiest recommendations to follow is that if the performance of resistance and endurance training sessions on the same day is unavoidable, endurance training sessions should be done prior to resistance training irrespective of the intensity of either, with at least half a day of recovery in-between training sessions,” (Dr Doma).

So, whether you like to run to and from the gym and aren’t seeing those gains, or you’re a bona fide athlete looking to improve your endurance potential, make sure your concurrent training routine is ‘on point’ before blaming those bagels you scoffed last weekend for this morning’s slovenly performance…

Ryan Reynolds Is Showing You The Secret To Being This Year’s Most Stylish Man
Ryan Reynolds Is Showing You The Secret To Being This Year’s Most Stylish Man

2019 isn’t even over yet but Ryan Reynolds doesn’t seem to care – he’s clearly going for the title of this year’s most stylish man…and he’s winning. The 42-year-old actor has been busy on his press circuit for his Pokemon movie, Detective Pikachu, and he’s been lighting up the yellow carpet with an impeccable wardrobe which all men need to take note of. Why? Because it’s a master class in how men should be dressing for formal, smart casual and casual occasions.

Let’s get into exhibit  – the formal and timeless waistcoat combo.

It’s no secret that Reynolds has an absolutely gun stylist in Ilaria Urbinati. She’s the one who’s been putting together Reynolds’s various looks and for this particular one in Tokyo she pulled it off with perfection by matching Reynolds’ complexion and hair colour with a killer custom brown check ensemble from Brunello Cucinelli. By custom we usually mean bespoke and it’s evident in the impeccable fit of the trousers, shirt and waistcoat.

Ditching the blazer is a nice touch as it gives more attention to other elements of the look such as the brown suede shoes and what appears to be a Piaget timepiece (some claim he’s jumped ship to IWC but that’s yet to be confirmed). It’s also an easy formal look to pull off with the only requisites being nicely rolled sleeves, the last waistcoat button left undone and a tie that isn’t hanging loose around the neck.

Look number two from the China premiere also comes complements of the yellow carpet and it’s way more chill than the others. Reynolds paired a navy long sleeve collared top with matching chinos and crisp white sneakers. An insanely simple look that is made for weekend duties but adds a touch of style with sunglasses and a timepiece. Again, fitment is key here and keeping things slim will do you wonders.

Finally we move to the casual wardrobe realm of Ryan Reynolds. Here the actor has pulled together one insanely sharp off-duty look with an Eleventy Milano bomber jacket and pants paired to a blue Levi’s printed shirt. Notice the way the tonal browns transition from the bomber jacket to the trousers before being highlighted with white sneakers yet again. Keep the jacket fitted, the shirt unbuttoned, the shirt untucked and you have a winner. Easy money.

That’s all your bases covered. Godspeed, men.

Suits Are Your Timeless Ticket To Looking Sharp; Here’s How To Wear Every Type
Suits Are Your Timeless Ticket To Looking Sharp; Here’s How To Wear Every Type

Like them or loathe them, every gent will need to don a suit at some point in their life. And whether it be for a wedding, work or a swanky dinner, it pays to know the basics. When it comes to suits, they really do come in all shapes and sizes; some good and some bad. Indeed, as the great Peter Johnson says, ‘There are so many ways you can approach wearing a suit. The styling options are endless’. Here, we simplify the matter, showing you how to ensure you present as a boss even if this is your first foray into tailoring.

How To Wear Single Breasted Suits

This is your stock standard starter suit. Perfect for work, cocktails and special events alike, a single breasted two piece is set to go the distance and the perfect foundation for your suiting wardrobe. If this is your first piece, look at navy or charcoal options. Less severe than black, these colours work for day and night time alike.

When it comes to tailoring, nothing beats a classic slim fit. A good jacket will cover your glutes, hitting the top of your thighs. On a similar note, the sleeve length should sit on the knobbly part of your wrist, allowing a centimetre or so of cuff to show. These are small but important details that can make even an entry level suit look expensive.

Looking at fabrication, try for a natural fibre as this will breathe and last longer than synthetics. The likes of M.J. Bale are a good place to start your search, with their White Label option in an Indigo pin dot fabric a classic for any wardrobe.

How To Wear Double Breasted Suits

How To Wear A Suit

Unlike the double breasters of yore (shoulder pads as wide as a carrier jet), today’s style is decidedly slimmer and more flattering. This being said, they’re not for the faint of heart – a double breasted suit is a statement and needs some deft handling to stop you from looking like too much of a fat cat.

For starters, we’d recommend steering away from bold pin stripes and checks. These add another layer to an already flamboyant style. Instead, look for interesting weaves and fabrics like flannel that can soften the overall impact. Great for the cooler months due to the double up of fabric over your core, seek out greys and charcoals and pair them with similarly wintery hued ties. Bold diagonal stripes in neutral colours look sensational over a white sateen shirt. Top the whole thing off with a pair of polished brogues.

How To Wear Linen Suits

Linen suits have enjoyed a resurgence of late – no less for their adaptability in a warm climate but also for their versatility. Either shrugged on sans tie with a plain poplin shirt for a summer wedding or styled as a three piece with a woven silk tie, this is a suit that truly works for any occasion.

When it comes to picking one out, look for styles that can work as either a full suit or as separates. The jacket of a stone coloured linen suit looks sensational with a blue chambray shirt, a pair of jeans and loafers. On the same token, it can be dressed up as a full suit with a knitted tie and a pair of suede monk straps.

In terms of fabrication, don’t be afraid to dabble with blended fabrics. Linen suits that are blended with either silk or cotton often crease less than their pure counterparts and will also retain their structure better.

How To Wear Slim Fit Suits

For many chaps, there’s a temptation to push tailoring to the nth degree in suiting. It rarely ends well. If anything, a skin tight suit will look too small and wear out in a few months. Instead, the fit of a suit – even a slim one – should be seen to skim the contours of your body.

If you do have a predilection for the skinny British mod style, some high street labels have a great selection that can work well with the aid of a skilled tailor. Investigate the likes of Reiss and Sandro for good quality iterations, aiming for options in inky navy and black. These are classics and add an element of sartorial nous to your overall look.

Alternatively (and if the paycheck allows), Thom Browne offers incredibly chic slim suits with signature shrunken tailoring.

How To Wear Unstructured Suits

As dress codes become increasingly relaxed, so too do the rules of suiting. Whereas once the notion of a suit without a canvas (the internal fabric that gives it structure) would be met with guffaws, today it’s rapidly becoming common practice.

Popular because of their more casual look and feel, an unstructured suit is marked by soft Neaopolitan style tailoring. This is most obvious around the shoulder which is unpadded and should slope elegantly from the collar.

This style of suit can be equally striking in either a block colour or pattern. If you are looking for bolder options, checks or pale neutrals are a great way to bolster your wardrobe. Pair these with either a shirt or a fine knit polo shirt to truly embody the spirit of sprezzatura.

How To Wear Relaxed Suits

Worn with shirts and t-shirts alike, the relaxed suit is, in many ways, at the vanguard of men’s suiting. With labels as varied as G-Star and Brunello Cucinelli sending models down the runway in jackets and trousers that combine the artistry of tailoring with the edge of streetwear.

If tackling this relatively avant-garde look yourself, there are a number of points worth noting. First and foremost, an unstructured suit is no excuse for poor tailoring. Make sure that the length of the jacket is in proportion to your torso and that it looks relaxed – not baggy. Secondly, use an unstructured suit to play with scale. This is an opportunity to experiment with wider leg trousers and different hem lengths. Finally, don’t be afraid to pair it all back with a pair of slick sneakers and a plain tee. There’s something about a white top with an relaxed khaki suit that reeks of understated elegance and cool.

If You’re Going To Follow One Fitness Influencer In 2019, Make It This 33-Year-Old ‘Cardio Strongman’

Getting fit used to be simple: you signed up to the nearest gym, paid your subscription, forgot about it, and wasted away on the couch. Now though, there’s a new way to feel bad about your impending dad bod: fitness influencers!

With the number of wannabe personal trainers out there, one could be forgiven for writing off this entire genre of protein-shake worshippers. However, a select few exist which truly motivate, inform and inspire.

Fortunately, Ross Edgley is one of them, posting about everything from his latest adventures to practical advice the average guy can apply to his own humble workout.

But first: his background. Edgley is a British adventurer, inspired by the likes of Captain Webb, a legendary English swimmer who, Edgley revealed on a podcast called the Joe Rogan Experience, he looks up to hugely.

“We’ve got this real history and heritage (in Britain) of eccentric explorers, and for me growing up there was this story of Captain Webb, the first guy to swim across the English Channel… And he did it on a diet of beef broth and brandy.”

“In a wollen wetsuit,” Edgley continues, “He swam 23 hours, breaststroke, with his head out of the water, because ‘front crawl was ungentlemanly-like.'”

Could it get any more British?

Eccentricities aside, Edgley has some razor sharp workout advice, innovative workout ideas, and divulges smart mental tricks and tips to keep you performing at your best.

And—unlike many other self-promoted fitness celebrities—Edgley has the qualifications to back up his claims—he’s the author of The World’s Fittest Book, a graduate from the world renowned Loughborough University School of Sport and Exercise Science, and is a longtime strength and conditioning coach and performance nutritionist.

He also puts his money (well, his entire body actually) where his mouth is, completing such feats as running 30 marathons in 30 days, and swimming around the entirety of Great Britain in 157 days, all while maintaining a physique that puts the hulk to shame, in order to prove that cardiovascular fitness and muscle building are not mutually exclusive endeavours.

He has also climbed a rope the length of Everest, swum 100km tied to a small tree, and run a marathon while pulling a mini. Suffice to say: Edgley’s bloody fit.

Taken from #TheWorldsFittestBook (GET YOUR COPY THROUGH LINK IN BIO) “Speed can make you strong! The stretch-shortening cycle used for “Shock Training” forms only a small part of Ballistic Resistance Training. Ballistic training is a type of weight-lifting characterized by movements in which the athlete tries to apply the maximal force to the resistance with the goal of lifting, moving or projecting it as quickly as they can. This is where the possibilities extend far beyond improving your vertical jump (with the utmost respect to Verkhoshansky) and this is where things become really interesting. This is because if you consider every time you perform a conventional squat or bench your body naturally decelerates at the top of the movement. In fact, it’s believed in a one repetition maximum lift, as much as 24% of the lift time is spent decelerating. For a lift at 80% of your onerepetition maximum deceleration can increase to as much as 52%.Even if you perform them quickly (‘speed reps’) the speed decreases at the end of the concentric motion. It’s a protective mechanism put in place by our joints that stops our shoulders from becoming detached from our bodies during quick bench press. Ballistic training virtually eliminates this deceleration | Tag friends and training partners and let’s have a STRONG start to 2019

You’ll never be short of workout inspiration (or sneaky, free excerpts from his bestselling book) if you give him a cheeky follow.

Oh and if the physical tips weren’t enough, he also demonstrates how to be humble in both victory and defeat, explaining how he reacted to “failing” one of the first big challenges he ever set himself.

Talking about a mission which involved swimming from St. Lucia to Martinique, two Carribean islands—a 40km journey which he was trying to swim for charity—Edgley ran into a few issues (and three-metre waves) with a 100-pound tree attached to his legs for good measure.

“I actually didn’t make it from point to point,” he explained on the JRE podcast, “I was 5km from the end, and when I didn’t make it (because of the tide and currents), I decided to swim back the other way.”

Sure: anyone can tell you: ‘never give up’, but this guy really does it…

“So I ended up swimming over 100km, with a 100-pound tree, in 32 hours, but still didn’t make it… as physically fit as you are, the ocean just doesn’t care.”

This was November 2017. Then, as Edgley explains, he had “unfinished business” with the ocean, which—combined with an experience he had once he got back to England—inspired him to come up with an even crazier challenge for himself.

As he told Joe Rogan, he was nursing his sodden feet at the end of a marathon swim session when a British Special Forces officer, a good friend of his, came over and said, “You, boy: what are you training for?”

“Oh, well, uh, I’m training for—potentially—the world’s longest current neutral swim.”

“He (the officer) paused,” Edgley tells us (on the JRE Experience), “Sipped his cup of tea, looked me up and down and just goes: ‘that just sounds a bit lame.'”

The guy then suggested he swim round Great Britain and Edgley, in typical British fashion recounts how; “I couldn’t say no; once I heard the idea.”
