Melbourne may steal most of Australia’s limelight when it comes to the best nightlife the country has to offer. Sydney too has a number of world-class cocktail and whisky bars that you simply can’t go through life without visiting. But let’s not forget dear old Brisbane, situated on the gob-smackingly gorgeous Gold Coast, as it too has a high number of fine drinking establishments that you’ll do well to spend a few weekends visiting. But rather than simply provide you with a list of the best bars in Brisbane, it doesn’t necessarily mean they’re cool bars. Places that you really can’t wait to recommend to your friends if they’re planning their own trips to Brissy in the future. We here at DMARGE believe ourselves to be well-versed in the act of coolness, and so have filtered out a large group of bars in Brisbane to bring you the definitive guide to the no questions asked coolest bars.Cheers!
Super Whatnot
Address:
48 Burnett Lane, Brisbane City, 4000This split-level bar tucked away on Brisbane’s oldest lane gives off an air of coolness right from the off, as it has no major branding to be seen. It’s more one of those bars you need a veteran to guide you to. Once inside – you’ll probably want to head early for a greater chance of grabbing a seat – you’re presented with an extensive list of beers, a curated selection of wines and a heap of house cocktails that will happily accompany you over hours of conversation.
Brooklyn Standard
Address:
Eagle Lane, Brisbane City, 4000Find the secret door down the Eagle Lane laneway and take a staircase downstairs and you’ll be greeted by Brooklyn Standard, widely regarded as one of the best live music bars in the city. Anyone is welcome at Brooklyn – this isn’t the sort of bar people go to be ‘seen’ at. It’s unashamedly American themed, with American brews being served behind the bar. But you go here for the music, which starts off with a live band or acoustic set before the jukebox starts belting out classic Motown hit.
Suzie Wongs Good Time Bar
Address:
678 Ann Street, Fortitude Valley, 4003Another American themed bar – but this time the tropical climates of Hawaii – is Suzie Wong’s, which is also a speakeasy that is accessed via a refrigerator door (it’s also owned by the same company who owns Brooklyn Standard). There’s nothing chilled about Suzi Wong’s once inside though, as this neon-lit bar is pumping all night long with live music every night, covering a variety of genres. A small selection of beers can be savoured, but Suzie’s is all about the house cocktails and shots, which draw heavily on rum for their base ingredient.
The Boom Boom Room
Address:
49 Elizabeth Street, Brisbane City, 4000A date at The Boom Boom Room could result in some boom boom in a room of your own. It’s certainly one of the more opulent bars on this list, being decked out in a black and gold colour scheme, leather sofas and a well-lit bar with velvet stools. Some private lounges can also be found lurking within the confines of the four walls, perhaps for more intimate conversation. Jazz and blues music is pumped out through the speakers, creating a soothing atmosphere for you to enjoy an eclectic range of spirits – which includes some rarities – and cocktails.
Felons Brewing Co.
Address:
5 Boundary Street, Brisbane City, 4000If it’s beer, beer and more beer you want when heading to a bar, we implore you to check out Felons Brewing Co. Nestled in a superb spot under the Story Bridge and with unobstructed views of the neighbouring river, Felons itself is a huge iron shed of a building. This is a casual beer and burger spot make no mistake – or local fish and chips if you so wish – and if you can’t find yourself a seat out on the verandah, your next best bet is to find a table near the giant working silos where many of its beers are brewed.
Maya Mexican
Address:
757 Ann Street, Fortitude Valley, 4006From basement and riverside bars to the complete opposite now and rooftop bar Maya Mexican, which offers an expansive 270-degree view of Fortitude Valley. It’s not going to be around forever, unfortunately, as it has been opened as a six month pop-up, but since it only opened up in July, you’ll have plenty of time to grab a seat before it does go. Once you’re there, you’ll be treated to a whirlwind of a food and drinks menu, which, naturally, puts an emphasis on tequila.
Cobbler
Address:
7 Browning Street, West End, 4101This highly sophisticated bar is a whisky lover’s paradise, owing to the fact it stocks over 300 varietals of the stuff. If whisky isn’t your bag, don’t be put off, Cobbler caters to all tastebuds. With a good selection of beer and wine available also, not to mention an incredible selection of cocktails (the bartenders also happen to have an encyclopaedic knowledge of drinks so can make anything you desire) Cobbler will soon become a regular haunt for you and your friends. The bar itself is very loft-style in its appearance, with exposed brick walls, mismatched sofas and chairs and a mezzanine lounge. Pure bliss.
The End
Address:
73 Vulture Street, West End, 4101A short trip outside the CBD to the West End is where you will find The End, an incredibly welcoming and approachable bar with a warming attitude towards customers and drinks. Leather couches are on standby for you to slump into, allowing you to enjoy an evening of conversation with friends – your dog is welcome inside too – while sipping on a broad range of cocktails, delicious wines and refreshing craft beers.
Next Episode
Find the small barbershop tucked away down Fish Lane, head inside, pick up the phone, enter the code (you can find it on the bar’s Instagram page) and step on through into Next Episode, a hidden hip-hop themed bar. Murals of famous rappers, pink neon lights everywhere you look and cocktails with names that take inspiration from the hip-hop music industry. As for music, do we even have to say?Address: 5/27 Cordelia Street, South Brisbane, 4101
Canvas
Address:
16B Logan Road, Woolloongabba, 4102Canvas is one of those bars that you can either head to as your first port of call on a night out; a couple of casual mid-week beers; or the spot you spend your entire night, such is its charm. The bar is well-stocked and serves up some of the best cocktails you’ll ever get your lips around, the tapas-style menu is one you’re definitely going to need to try at some point, and the small beer garden is the quintessential place to spend a summer’s evening.
Fitz & Potts
Address:
(Upstairs) 1180 Sandgate Road, Nundah, 4012A repeat winner of the Brisbane’s Best Bar Award, Fitz & Potts is one you need to add to your list of go-to joints. It’s just cool. It’s not a particularly big space, and occupies just a single level above a cafe. An astroturf roof garden (which dogs on leashes are allowed to frequent) wraps around the outside, while inside you’ll find a series of laneways leading into various, uniquely decorated rooms. Everything is of a 1970s vibe, but colours, fabrics and decorations differ from room to room. As for the drinks on offer, well, it’s all Australian and the food menu is plant-based, so vegetarians and vegans won’t be left wanting.
The Walrus Club
Address:
543A Coronation Drive, Toowong, 4066The Walrus Club is unequivocally Prohibition in its approach to décor and atmosphere. Hidden underground, beneath the Regatta, The Walrus Club, like Fitz & Potts, has a number of rooms hidden away in nooks and crannies. All spirits are, naturally, catered for, but The Walrus Club specialises in rum and as a result, is decorated with a smattering of rum barrels (it also takes it names from the floating rum distillery the SS Walrus) and has some 170 varietals on the menu. For a trip back in time and some mouthwatering drinks alongside, look no further.

British comedian Ricky Gervais isn’t one to shy away from making a controversial joke or statement. The Emmy winner, recently appeared on The Tonight Show to discuss the new season of his show After Life, but host, Jimmy Fallon decided to challenge Gervais and asked him to settle some of the biggest debates of all time.
One of these debate topics included ‘who’s the best James Bond?’ which genuinely seemed to stump Gervais. The comedian, best known for writing and starring in The Office UK, The Invention Of Lying, and Derek, went on to say that his ‘first thought’ was Sean Connery — sorry Daniel Craig fans — but then revealed:
“I’m not a fan of Bond. I’ve only watched a couple…”
Ricky Gervais
In true Gervais fashion, he then joked that the reason he doesn’t like Bond films is because he can’t relate to the James Bond character because of the whole “putting on suits and dry martinis” thing.
“I’d like him [if he wore] a tracksuit and a stained t-shirt or something.”
Fallon also asked him whether the UK or US version of The Office was better, and again, Gervais had a quick-witted answer.
“I thought the British ‘Office’ was the best but my accountant assures me that it’s the American version.”
If you want to watch the whole hilarious segment of Gervais settling various debates on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon, you can do so below.

Who would win in a fight? The superheroic Captain America or the professional wrestler The Rock? While we may never know, we will see the two come together in a mysterious upcoming film called Red One.
Red One was first announced by Amazon in June last year, but here we are, almost eight months later and still, hardly any details about the film have been revealed. What we do know is that Red One will be a holiday film and according to The Hollywood Reporter will feature Santa Clause as a character.

Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson will star and produce the film, which has been described as “a globe-trotting, four-quadrant action-adventure comedy, imagining a whole new universe to explore within the holiday genre”. This morning, however, it was announced that Marvel star Chris Evans, best known for playing Captain America in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, has been cast alongside Johnson in Red One.
While Johnson and Evans haven’t previously worked together, they did both make small cameos in the 2021 film, Free Guy — Johnson as the voice of Bank Robber 2 and Evans as himself — and have interacted with each other on Twitter; most notably when Johnson congratulated Evans on his last day as Captain America.
There are still no details on what characters the two actors will be playing or what the plot of the film will be, but it has been confirmed that Red One was written by Hiram Garcia who produced Jumanji: Welcome To The Jungle, Jumanji: The Next Level, Fast & Furious: Hobbs & Shaw, and Jungle Cruise — all of which starred Johnson — and that Red One will be released in 2023.

On January 18, the Casino dell’Aurora went up for auction, with an asking price of €471 million euros ($533 million USD). If the auction had been successful, the Villa Aurora would have become the single most expensive home of its size in the world.
Unfortunately, the auction failed to attract a single bidder and now, an Italian tribunal has declared the price must be dropped to €377 million euros ($427 million USD) when it goes back to auction.
Now, you might be wondering why this particular Roman villa is one of the most expensive properties on the planet, and why it’s being forcibly sold at auction…
The Villa Aurora itself is a luxurious 2,800 square metre villa, which itself is perched atop a 6,000 square metre plot in the heart of Rome. Occupants of the villa are kept completely private by its 500-year-old walls and manicured gardens.
However, what makes this 16th century villa truly worth its astonishing price tag, is that it houses a series of incredibly valuable historic artefacts, including a “priceless” one-of-a-kind work from Italian painter Caravaggio.
Professor Alessandro Zuccari who oversaw the valuation of the Villa’s artworks, says that this fresco is the only one ever to have been painted by Caravaggio, who is widely considered to be one of the greatest artists of the modern age.
Despite its status as “invaluable” among art connoisseurs, the fresco has been officially evaluated by independent appraisers, who suggest that its real market value is somewhere around €311 million euros ($360 million USD).
The villa also contains thousands of other Italian artworks, sculptures and artefacts of profound cultural and historical significance.
Villa Aurora’s ownership became the subject of debate back in 2018, when owner Prince Nicolò Boncompagni Ludovisi died at the age of 77. Following his death, a lengthy legal battle between the different heirs of Prince Nicolo emerged and the end result was an Italian judicial order to sell the villa.
Forcing the sale of the villa to whoever happens to be the highest bidder immediately raised fears of allowing opportunistic foreign buyers to swoop in and privately control important aspects of Italian heritage and culture.
In response to this, more than 39,000 people have signed a petition in the past few days, begging the Italian government to step in and purchase the villa in order to protect Italian culture.
Too Much Foreign Ownership?
This has once again sparked debate around the level of foreign ownership that should be welcomed into countries, especially when it comes to buying up heritage listed or culturally significant properties.
This trend has become increasingly relevant in Australia as well. Despite Covid shutting down our borders and preventing travel, 2021 was a massive year for foreign investment in the Australian property market, with over $6 billion in residential real estate being sold…
Should properties with such enormous cultural significance, like the Villa Aurora be auctioned off privately to the highest bidder?
Or, do governments have a responsibility to protect important cultural assets?
Those that are up in arms over the sale, including a number of politicians and academics will find out on April 7, when the villa is scheduled to go back under the hammer.
This time, Villa Aurora will be on sale for a more “reasonable” price of $427 million US dollars…

Ah, the classic black blazer. It’s as timeless as a vintage watch and yet it’s often the most underrated tone because men prefer a bit of colour in their lives. Well we’re going to kick off this style guide with an ancient quote from a notable philosopher. Wesley Snipes, Passenger 57: “Always bet on black.”
Here’s the many ways men can rock the black blazer with slick and masculine style.
In This Story…
Black Blazer & Black Jeans Combination
Black on black on black…could it get any easier than combining a black blazer with black jeans? We think not. Ensure you blazer is not too long and correctly tailored. For the denim we recommend slim fit jeans (ripped or not ripped), paired with a classic black, white or striped t-shirt followed by sneakers or boots. Even a pair of brown brogues will work nicely for contrast.
Black Blazer & Black Trousers
Much like our combination above, black trousers/chinos will also work nicely with a black blazer. The idea here is to not make this combination look like a suit. Rather it’s a great go-to work or event look. Pair your blazer and black trousers with derby shoes or loafers, then add a shirt or t-shirt to finish. An unstructured blazer might work best in this situation by keeping things relaxed. A belt is not required here.
Black Blazer & Blue Jeans
This is our favourite and most versatile combination for both work and play and travel. Every man owns blue jeans, so wear them well with a black blazer. This combination will see you to smart casual events and even a night out on the town. Pair with almost any shoe imaginable, however, we like boots and sneakers for this combination.
Black Blazer & Chinos
Not the most uncommon of combinations is the chinos and black blazer. Our recommendation here is to keep this as your dressier occasion secret weapon. Combine with a printed or plain shirt, boots, sneakers or a derby shoe will do nicely. Ensure your chinos are well fitted, as too baggy won’t look right. We recommend wearing a belt for this combination too. Brown, black or blue will be just fine.
Black Blazer & T-Shirt
Lastly, the t-shirt and black blazer combination is a no-brainer. Think of it as the ‘I don’t know what to wear, so this will do’ look.
It’s the go-to for every designer and advertising creative around the world too. The trick here is to wear a t-shirt with scoop or v-neck rather than a very high cut crew neck. You want to show off a little bit of chest rather than being wrapped up like a priest. We like Acne, Topman and even Orlebar Brown for cool men’s t-shirts. Tuck (with chinos or trousers) or untuck the t-shirt (with jeans) to complete the look.
How To Wear A Black Blazer FAQ
What should I wear with a black blazer?
Our favourite pairing for a black blazer is a park of blue jeans. Any shade and any style will work, such as dark blue for work or light blue ripped jeans for a more casual look.
What should I wear with a black blazer to work?
Looking smart is key, and so the best options for pairing with a black blazer when heading to work are either a dark pair of black or blue jeans, or black chinos or trousers.
What colour shirt should I wear with a black blazer?
It can be tricky to pair a black blazer with a shirt if you're wanting to stay casual, as most of the time the resulting look will be more formal. You're better off pairing with a black or white t-shirt for a dapper, yet casual look.

We’ve often spoken about brutal workouts here at DMARGE, whether it be one to grow your shoulders or an assault bike workout to help shed body fat, but they now seem like a walk in the park compared to this ridiculously heavy workout performed by Bud Jefferies.
Whilst researching Bud and his career, we discovered via Barbend he actually passed away on January 22 2022 at the tragically young age of 48.
His wife posted on his Instagram page an image of the two of them together, along with the caption, “I have been trying to find the right words to post to all of you. I am heartbroken and overwhelmed to have to say that yesterday afternoon, Friday, January 21, around 3:30, while doing a light training session outside, Bud collapsed. I performed CPR until medics arrived, but after lengthy efforts to resuscitate him, he never recovered,”
A former self-proclaimed “professional performing old-time strongman”, Bud was able to prove his crazy levels of strength by squatting a 265lb/120kg stone. Yes, we have seen gym junkies squat much higher weights than this, but Bud performs his squat while also having a 150lb/68kg dumbbell tied around his waist, bringing his total weight up to nearly 190kg.
Not only is this a serious amount of weight to attempt to lift, but the way in which you need to hold a stone and perform a squat increases the difficulty way beyond that of a barbell back squat. If anything, it’s similar to a barbell front squat, which are also more difficult than a back squat.
This is because the weight isn’t loaded onto your shoulders, which would allow your entire body to take the load. Instead, you have the weight held in front of you, which will naturally cause you to want to fall forward. To help counterbalance this, you need to employ all your body muscles to help maintain a much stricter upright stance. Your legs and quad muscles especially are targeted much more, making front squats – and Bud’s brutal stone lift – a serious leg workout.
In general, most fitness professionals suggest you’re able to front squat around 60 – 70 per cent of the weight you would be able to back squat.
Bud Jeffries’ Instagram feed is littered with his feats of crazy superhuman strength, such as carrying a fridge over his head (his last video posted before his unfortunate passing) and deadlifting 505lbs/230kg. We’ve spoken before about how the differences between size vs strength, but in Bud’s case, he had both.
Barbend further comments on Bud’s incredible powerlifting career, saying he “took up strength training at the age of 14.” Some of his other insane feats of true strength have included squatting 1,000lbs/450kg from the bottom position of a squat rack, walking one mile while wearing a 300lb/136kg weighted vested and “swung a 24-kilogram kettlebell 2,350 times in an hour.”
Of course, it should go without saying that we recommend you don’t try Bud’s workouts at home for yourself (good luck sourcing a stone that big in the first place) but the injury potential here if you don’t know what you’re doing, or if you’re not strong enough, isn’t even worth thinking about.
For now, let’s leave it to the professionals.

While journalist after journalist gleefully predicts “the next Byron Bay” (depending on who you believe that could be anywhere from Noosa to Crescent Head to Coffs), Australians all along the East Coast are really hoping, when it comes to their town, that doesn’t end up being the case.
Case in point: a recent article published here on DMARGE, which innocently – we thought – claimed Crescent Head was better than Byron Bay. Crescent Head is a quiet – but hardly secret – beach town on Australia’s east coast, about 5 hours drive north of Sydney.
We argued that it’s time to pass on The Pass and head somewhere a bit more chill. But when we posted the story to Instagram, we realised that there are some peope in Crescent (and some people who aren’t from Crescent, but who like Crescent), who are really not chill at all. At least not when you talk about their town on the Internet.

Comments included:
“Can ya not”
“Then stop talking about it”
“Please stop.”
Another pertinent comment was:
“Unfollow! Whats the point in blowing up another beach town. Kooks
.”
Another comment left beneath our post was: “Do we really need to keeping awaking the small regional towns to the masses. Crescent is no secret especially to the surfing community, this stupid obsession with finding the new Byron, which is now destroyed by the masses.”
Further honourable mentions go to: “that’s why it’s my fav place in Aus,” and “Byron Bay is a toilet.”
Though our initial instinct was to justify our blatant exposure of a well-known town that people have been surfing for 50 or more years, after seeing some of the comments, which pinned down what we like to call the Byron Bay effect (see: “Anyway Place is better than Byron.. totally ruined” and “Keep all the dickheads in Byron that place is completely fucked now”), we finally twigged: people are that worried their town could become ‘the next Byron Bay’ they are legitimately concerned about talk of their town…
Looking into things, there are real issues that come with the exploding popularity of a place. From ‘hate crime’ coffee orders (see: ‘You’ve Got To Be Joking’: Yuppie Coffee Order Leaves Byron Bay Barista Stunned) to Sydneysiders on holiday parking their Range Rovers like absolute pelicans, there’s a lot to put up with.
Also, as one commenter on a surf blog wrote a year or two ago, speaking about Byron Bay, the place has really changed.
“There was a time, not so long ago, that it was considered an uncouth act to drive a luxury vehicle in the Byron Shore. I used to joke that the secret to success around here was to have lots of money but pretend that you didn’t.”
“Now the Black SUV is the new surf van, Byron is long past trying to hide wealth, now it’s a matter of letting it all hang out.”
On the other hand, some people like the new vibe, their logic simply being, ‘more people = more party’. Anyway: something to mull over before you book your next trip…

Academy Award winner, Taika Waititi will be coming to Australian television screens in a new period comedy, Our Flag Means Death, which is set in the 18th century and will focus on piracy. The series is loosely based on Stede Bonnet’s story, a real-life aristocrat who abandoned his life in the 1700s to become a pirate.

Bonnet will be played by New Zealand actor, Rhys Darby, a close friend of Waititi’s who has previously worked with him on the comedy shows, Flight of the Conchords and What We Do in the Shadows. Waititi, who is best known for writing and directing, will be executively producing Our Flag Means Death and will play the notorious pirate Blackbeard. This isn’t Waititi’s first acting role though; in fact, he’s acted in numerous projects including films he’s written and directed, such as Korg in Thor: Ragnarok and Hitler in Jojo Rabbit.
While the trailer for Our Flag Means Death only shows a glimpse of Waititi as Blackbeard, if there’s one thing Waititi excels at, it’s offbeat comedy, so hopefully, Blackbeard will be his funniest role yet. Our Flag Means Death creator David Jenkins certainly thinks so; as he told Entertainment Weekly that the friendship between Waititi and Darby pushed both actors to perform at their absolute best.
“… they know how to get the best out of each other. There’s a generosity and a real sweetness between them that you wouldn’t get if you weren’t using those two friends.”
David Jenkins – Our Flag Means Death showrunner
The show will have a total of ten episodes, two of which have been directed by Waititi. While an exact release date hasn’t been announced, Our Flag Means Death will hit the Australian streaming service, Binge in March, and fans of Waititi can’t wait.
If you haven’t had a chance, make sure you check out the trailer for Our Flag Means Death, which you can do so below:

In case you’ve been living under a rock, your sneakers are meant for more than just the gym these days. Though they got their start as flimsy ‘plimsolls’ meant for working-class holidaymakers and purpose-built footwear designed for athletes, sneakers have become a staple in every man’s (and woman’s, for that matter) wardrobe. From lifestyle to the red carpet to sports, nowadays your sneakers can be an expression of yourself. And today we’re showing you how to wear them perfectly.

Basic Sneaker Rules

No matter what kind of sneakers you settle on, there are a few basic principles for how to wear sneakers.
Always:
- Buy sneakers that suit your current wardrobe: What good does it do to buy the latest ‘hype’ style if it doesn’t suit your style? Don’t hop on the trend train just because it’s passing through. Choose shoes that complement what you already have, not shoes that require you to repurchase your entire wardrobe. We’re looking at you, Yeezy lovers.
- Wear them to the right occasions (don’t go too casual): Sneakers are incredibly versatile, but they’re no substitute for dress shoes. You can get away with wearing sneakers with any off-duty outfit – and perhaps even some casual, unstructured suits – but they’re not meant for every occasion (i.e. weddings). Err on the side of overdressed rather than underdressed.
- Keep them clean: It doesn’t matter how cool your sneakers are, the effect will be lost if they’re not spick-and-span. Proper sneaker maintenance includes washing the laces, eliminating odours, brushing the outsoles, and using shoe trees and sneaker shields.
How To Choose Sneakers: Understanding Your Sneakers & Trainer Types

Sneakers come in many shapes and sizes these days. From basic unstructured canvas to the brightest, finest leather; from minimalist looks to metal fastenings and high technology; there are few rules when it comes to trainers. With so many options available, it can be hard knowing exactly what’s what and even harder to know what’s most likely to suit your wardrobe and taste.
Luckily, you have us here to make things easier. We’ve put together a How To Wear Sneakers Style 101 guide that should have you acing your footwear exams in no time.
- Basic Sneakers – These are your Converse, Vans, etc., types. Sometimes they come in leather, but they’re typically found in canvas and in basic colours. On the whole they’re generally affordable, easy to wear / clean, and work well with just about anything. They might not be the most comfortable, however.
- Refined Luxury Sneakers – They might bear a resemblance to your basic plimsolls, but they’re more expensive and often made from suede or leather by brands like Tom Ford, Lanvin & Saint Laurent. These are not something you’d take to a music festival.
- Classic Sports Sneakers – Your Nike Air Max, Reebok Pump, Asics Gel-Lyte and other forms of old school sporting greatness. What was once ready for the track and field is now kept safely in a shoe collection at home.
- Modern Sport Sneakers – Again, these are your Nike, Adidas and Puma-tier brands, but with modern styling and shapes. As a rule, it’s harder to pull off modern sports sneakers than it is to pull off classic styles.
- Hiking / Trail Sneakers – As the name implies, these shoes were designed with technical activities in mind, but are fast finding a place in mainstream fashion. Think Salomon, La Sportiva or Keen. Not the easiest to style.
- High-fashion Sneakers – These are the work of brands like Givenchy, Christian Louboutin, Maison Martin Margiela, Diemme and even Giuseppe Zanotti. They’re loud and designed to be noticed.
- Luxury Techwear – This is the category for the likes of Rick Owens, A-COLD-WALL* and other designers who are really pushing the limits of sneaker design. Blending technical sneakers, high fashion as well as their own unique aesthetic, these are real statement pieces.

How To Wear & Style Sneakers
Now that you’ve selected your poison, it’s time to actually pair them with your wardrobe. And no, it’s not a case of wearing your one pair of sneakers with any pair of jeans. There’s a fine art in the craft so pay attention.
The Basic Classics
Lows, Chucks, canvas kicks… whatever you call them, the basic sneaker is the most versatile casual sneaker you can buy. They work well with denim, chinos and shorts of pretty much any colour and shade.
Where we find guys sometimes get a little unstuck with these types of sneakers is when they wear them to smart casual events or to work when a dress shoe is required. The basic sneaker DOES NOT work for every occasion and should be kept solely for casual situations. Your best bet on top is to run with print t-shirts, gingham shirts or even a blazer for the college professor look.
- Mix with relaxed, slim & skinny denim and chinos
- Keep for casual/street occasions only
- Maintain to ensure they stay clean and respectable
- Best suited to younger men
How To Wear Luxury Sneakers

Our personal favourite is the luxury take on the basic sneaker. These beautiful specimens have allowed sneakers to jump from street casual to smart casual without looking like they belong on a teenage boy. They can be worn with tailored trousers, slim denim, chinos and in some cases even casual unstructured suiting.
Avoid wearing them with shorts, as these sneakers are quite often bulky in comparison to the basic canvas sneakers. Keep it refined on top to match the shoe. Basic t-shirts, smart shirts and polos are all great options. For a more distinct look, opt for a shirt with a slim or knit tie, a blazer and some slim denim.
- Dress up, not down
- Start with black, then purchase other colours
- Take extra care with suede and don’t wear it too often
- Try brighter pairs for summer / European holidays
How To Wear Classic Sports Sneakers

Sneakerheads, unite! These babies started the sneaker revolution that we have today. Jordans, Superstars, 95s – these are your street-going, on-trend kicks that are just popping with colour. The idea with classic sports sneakers is to find a couple that complements your style and purchase a few pairs in different colours.
Slim- and tapered-fit denim, loose t-shirts (with or without prints) and casual outerwear are your essential staples when it comes to dressing these sneakers. Pair them with chino shorts for an easy win in summer. The key is to find the balance between hip-hop artist and everyday citizen. Some guys like to rock a snapback – that’s up to you. Personally, we like to colour match our sneakers with what we’re wearing on top, to give the look a sense of purpose and cohesiveness.
- Find a few styles you like and stick to them
- Colour match if you can
- Pin roll, or rock with khaki chinos when it’s warm
- Sell them on eBay if you don’t like them
How To Wear Modern Sport Sneakers

Wearing this style of sneaker can have you looking like Jerry Seinfeld if you’re not careful. On the other hand, you can quite easily look like a ‘houso’ if you pair them with tracksuit pants. As much as possible, stick with sneaker releases that are low profile with a fashionable edge.
Too runnery/sporty and they’ll look bulky and not quite right. Wear these as you would classic sneakers or with gym/running gear on the weekend. Steer clear of denim that’s loose-fitting, as it never seems to work. Instead, choose slim Nudie chinos or elastic cuff variations. On top, keep it sporty and casual with t-shirts only.
- Avoid all white pairs running trainers… eeew!
- Don’t tuck shirts into denim with these sneakers
- Go for a sporty look to complement the shoe
How To Wear Designer Sneakers

Expensive and not for the faint of heart, these top-end sneakers are getting louder and more in-your-face every season. For an example of someone who wears them well consistently, look to Kanye West. A common approach to wearing these sneakers matches them with slim denim that’s often gathered at the bottom and t-shirts with open plaid shirts. There’s also the Parisian style, which includes long and drapey blazers and singlets that add even more edge to the look. Black denim is a must-own item as well as longer, looser fit t-shirts.
- Stick with blacks, whites and muted colours
- Let the sneakers to the talking
- Denim is your best friend
How To Wear High Tech Sneakers

Only a few will dare to wear these sneakers. They’re highly fashion-forward and to me only really work with drapey and long fitting clothing. Stick with black and do as little as possible to draw attention to the shoes – they will do that themselves. Ideally, you want people to think that you’re not trying too hard when you wear these types of kicks, so muted attire is best.
- Black, black, and more black
- Go for long and draped style of clothing
- Be prepared for people’s comments
