12 Stylish Ski Jackets For Men In 2022
12 Stylish Ski Jackets For Men In 2022

A ski jacket is an absolute necessity if you’re planning to throw yourself down some alpine mountains this winter. They offer complete protection when you’re carving down the mountains, keep you warm and prevent snow from leaking in, causing you to become wet and weighed down.

With snowsports becoming ever more popular, there’s no shortage of brands producing some great quality ski jackets, and ones that look good too. You could always opt for an all-black number, but where’s the fun in that?

We’re not saying you need to bring back the 80s trend of retro-looking jumpsuits (but if you want to, have at it), but injecting a bit of colour on the snow and mountains not only gives you a unique look but will make it easier for your fellow group members to spot you.

Ski Jacket vs Snowboard Jacket

While you may think that skiing and snowboarding make do with the same clothing, there are actually a few differences between the look and style of clothing you need to be aware of.

The main difference between a ski jacket and a snowboard jacket is their fit. Ski jackets tend to offer a more snug fit, at least compared to snowboard jackets, which tend to be a lot looser. Snowboard jackets are also longer at the back to protect your behind from getting cold and wet when you fall off the board.

However, since both are designed to protect against wind, rain, snow and whatever else the mountain can throw at you, you’re safe to wear a snowboard jacket for skiing, or vice versa. More importantly, ski jackets (like all technical outerwear) can feature a range of various fabric technologies, all with a similar aim of keeping you warm and dry.

How to choose the right ski jacket for you

Ski jackets can come in various styles. The main three you’re going to see when searching are shell, insulated or 3-in-1. Each offers something different so determining which ski jacket style is best for you will come down to personal preference – if you already have a good mid-layer, you may just want to invest in a shell, for example – and cost.

Shell jackets

Image: Freeskier

Shell jackets literally provide a shell outer layer. They usually come without any real insulation, instead, offering a solid outer layer to protect you from wind, rain and snow. You will, however, need to source base and mid-layers to provide extra warmth. Within shell jackets, you can get hard and softshell, which have varying levels of breathability.

The former is better for backcountry skiing while the latter soft-shell is more appropriate for resort skiing. If a shell jacket is the style you choose, be sure to dig a little deeper into what’s around.

Insulated jackets

Image: @blackdiamond

Insulated jackets are the style we suspect most skiers and snowboarders will choose. They offer the best of both worlds: a tough outer layer that protects from the elements, with a warm inner layer that’s breathable and comfortable. The insulation material can range from jacket to jacket, with some manufacturers continuing to use down, while others have chosen to go down more sustainable routes by developing their own synthetic fabrics.

3-in-1 jackets

Image: Switchback Travel

3-in-1 jackets provide a solid outer layer, with a removable warm inner layer. This gives you versatility, meaning you can wear the full package on particularly cold days, just the shell on days that just require some protection from a bit of rain or just the inner layer to accompany you on chilly but dry winter evenings.

Ski Jacket Fabrics

Once you’ve decided which ski jacket style is best for you, you then need to look carefully at which fabric technologies, if any, it has. Whilst whichever ski jacket you choose is going to built specifically to keep you warm and dry, some jackets have that extra special touch to make your skiing experience a whole lot more comfortable.

One of the most common you’re going to see is Gore-Tex. This is a brand of weatherproof fabric technologies that signifies something you can trust to provide the best protection. However, within the Gore-Tex range are multiple different variations.

Gore-Tex Pro is the creme de la creme, the fabric that even comes with a “guaranteed to keep you dry” promise, no matter how harsh the downpour you find yourself in. It also provides superior breathability to keep you sweat-free, yet warm at the same time.

Gore-Tex Paclite jackets are, as their name implies, packable. This means they’re more shell-like jackets that offer a protective layer, requiring you to layer up underneath, as opposed to do-it-all jackets that will protect you from everything. Gore-Tex Paclite jackets are still breathable, windproof and waterproof, they’re just perhaps less rugged.

Gore-Thermium hails from the same umbrella company as Gore-Tex, but relates more to an internal insulation layer, as opposed to offering outer protection. It still has waterproof qualities, keeping rain and snow at bay from seeping inside a jacket, while offering a soft and cosy fabric to keep you warm and comfortable.

Image Credit: Sony Pictures Television Distribution/Amazon Studios

8.7 IMDb score, stars Karl Urban, Jack Quaid & Antony Starr, Action, Crime & Drama, released in 2019, 3 seasons

The Boys is one of Prime Video’s hero shows. Set in a world where superheroes are real but aren’t necessarily the good guys, the series follows a group of vigilantes who are determined to prove to the world that most superheroes are in fact corrupt, evil and regularly abuse their powers. Original, compelling and wonderfully violent and graphic, The Boys is for anyone who loves a good action film or series.

Plus, The Boys also has rather relevant themes that are explored cleverly and every member of this ensemble cast gives a powerful performance; especially Antony Starr.

Broadchurch

8.4 IMDb score, stars David Tennant, Olivia Colman & Jodie Whittaker, Crime, Drama & Mystery, released in 2013, 3 seasons

Broadchurch follows detectives Alec Hardy and Ellie Miller as they attempt to solve the murder of an eleven-year-old boy that took place in their seemingly friendly small town. There is only three seasons of Broadchurch, spanning 24 episodes, so it shouldn’t take you too long to get through if you do commit.

And commit you should. Broadchurch is incredibly compelling, and whether you’re a die hard crime fanatic or just have a passing interest in the genre, Broadchurch is easily one of the best crime series of recent times.

Fresh Meat

7.9 IMDb score, stars Zawe Ashton, Greg McHugh, Kimberley Nixon, Joe Thomas & Jack Whitehall, Comedy & Drama, released in 2011, 4 seasons

This British comedy show follows six young adults who have just started university and moved into the same share house. Fresh Meat is rather relatable and features clever humour as well as some raunchier moments. The show is reminiscent of The Inbetweeners but rather than being set in high school, it’s set at uni; plus, Thomas who starred in The Inbetweeners also stars in Fresh Meat.

If you’re after something easy to watch that’ll give you a few good laughs, Fresh Meat is for you.

Goliath

Goliath follows disgraced lawyer, Billy McBride who is given a chance at redemption; but it’ll be mighty hard. McBride is hired to take on the powerful law firm which he used to work at and helped to build, in a wrongful death lawsuit and soon discovers a huge but deadly conspiracy. Billy Bob Thornton gives an incredible performance is phenomenal (he won a Golden Globe for his performance in season one) and the series as a whole is a fantastic drama.

If you’re after something a bit gritty and compelling, Goliath is for you.

Good Omens

8.1 IMDb score, stars David Tennant, Michael Sheen, Jon Hamm & Frances McDormand, Comedy & Fantasy, released in 2019, 1 season

Based on Terry Pratchett’s 1990 book of the same name, Good Omens sees an angel team up with a demon as they both are fond of Earth and wish to save it from the impending Armageddon. All they have to do is find an 11-year-old who happens to be the Antichrist…

Funny and entertaining, Good Omens should definitely be added to your watch list. There is only one season of Good Omens for now, but a second, six-episode season was commissioned in June 2021.

House

8.8 IMDb score, stars Hugh Laurie, Omar Epps, Robert Sean Leonard, Jennifer Morrison & Jesse Spencer, Drama & Mystery, released in 2004, 8 seasons

House follows Dr Gregory House, a brilliant but anti-social and prickly doctor who each episode has to treat a patient with a mystery illness. A classic procedural show but focusing on medicine rather than crime, House is extremely enjoyable because it’s clever and Hugh Laurie is simply a delight to watch.

Plus, the overarching story of House’s drug addiction is fascinating.

The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power

6.9 IMDb score, stars Morfydd Clark, Robert Aramayo, Charlie Vickers & Ismael Cruz Cordova, Fantasy, released in 2022, 1 season

The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power is based on J.R.R Tolkien’s novels and set thousands of years before the events of The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings movies and focuses on the forging of the Rings of Power and the rise of the Dark Lord Sauron, both of which feature heavily in the now-iconic movie trilogies.

The Rings of Power is currently the most expensive TV show ever made, with a multi-season deal worth a reported $1 billion. But, early indications of the first season appear to show it’s a worthwhile investment, as many critics have praised the cinematography and visuals, which stay true to that of the original trilogies.

The Man In The High Castle

8.0 IMDb score, stars Alexa Davalos, Luke Kleintank & Rufus Sewell, Drama, Sci-Fi & Thriller, released in 2015, 4 seasons

This dystopic series was loosely based on the best-selling Philip K. Dick novel of the same name and explores an alternative universe where the US lost World War II and is now run by Nazi Germany and Imperial Japan.

The Man in the High Castle was with critical acclaim when it was released in 2015, with every successive season also proving to be received well. Regularly described as “unlike anything else on tv,” The Man in the High Castle is intriguing and thought-provoking, and well-worth watching, especially if you enjoy political dramas.

Mr Bean

8.6 IMDb score, stars Rowan Atkinson, Comedy, released in 1990, 1 season

Mr Bean is a classic. If you’re wanting something simple that’ll make you laugh then this is the series for you. It’s incredible that with hardly any dialogue Rowan Atkinson can portray so much emotion and provoke viewers to cry with laughter at all of Mr Bean’s hilarious antics.

If you’ve had a tough day, put Mr Bean on and you’ll instantly cheer up.

The Night Manager

8.0 IMDb score, stars Hugh Laurie, Tom Hiddleston, Elizabeth Debicki & Olivia Colman, Crime, Drama & Mystery, released in 2016, 1 season

Based on the 1993 John le Carré novel of the same name, this mini-series follows the night manager of a hotel, Jonathan Pine, who is asked by an intelligence operative to spy on billionaire guest, Richard Roper – who’s suspected of illegal activity. The Night Manager’s plot is incredibly compelling and well-written and both Laurie and Hiddleston give terrific performances.

Originally shown on the BBC in the UK and AMC in America, The Night Manager has since been picked up by Amazon so millions more can enjoy it. Trust us, just watch one episode and you’ll be hooked.

Reacher

8.2 IMDb score, stars Alan Ritchson, Malcolm Goodwin & Willa Fitzgerald, Action, Crime & Drama, released in 2022, 1 season

Based on the best-selling book Killing Floor, the first in the Jack Reacher series written by Lee Child, Reacher follows veteran police officer, Jack Reacher, who is falsely accused of murder as soon as he arrives in a town in the middle of nowhere. Reacher quickly discovers a massive conspiracy filled with corrupt cops and scheming politicians and must use his wits (and his military training) to prove his innocence.

The Reacher TV series isn’t the first adaptation of Lee Child’s character. Tom Cruise has starred in two Jack Reacher movies, but many thought that, while the action was good, Cruise just didn’t embody Reacher’s towering figure enough. That isn’t the case here, as Alan Ritchson is an absolute unit of a man who captures the character far better.

The series itself isn’t overly complicated, is fantastically action-packed and, if you haven’t already read the book, will have you asking a ton of questions right up until the final episode.

Sneaky Pete

8.1 IMDb score, stars Giovanni Ribisi, Marin Ireland & Shane McRae, co-created by Bryan Cranston, Crime & Thriller, released in 2015, 3 seasons

After leaving prison, a con man named Marius finds himself on the run from vicious gangsters. He assumes the identity of his cellmate, Pete to evade the gangsters and even moves in with Pete’s unsuspecting and estranged family. But Marius soon discovers that Pete’s family could be just as dangerous as the world Marius wished to escape from.

Extremely entertaining, Sneaky Pete is smart, suspenseful and charming.

Star Trek: Picard

7.5 IMDb score, stars Patrick Stewart, Alison Pill & Michelle Hurd, Action, Adventure & Drama, released in 2020, 2 seasons

Alright, I’ll level with you. I think you’ll only truly enjoy Star Trek: Picard if you’re a Star Trek fan; especially The Next Generation and Nemesis. That being said, Star Trek: Picard is still entertaining for non-Trekkies. Patrick Stewart, as always, is brilliant and the show tackles tough but relevant themes with enjoyable finesse.

If you are a Trekkie, you’ve probably already watched Star Trek: Picard but if not, this is your sign to go and do it.

Tom Clancy’s Jack Ryan

8.1 IMDb score, stars John Krasinski, Wendell Pierce & John Hoogenakker, Action, Drama & Thriller, released in 2018, 2 seasons

When CIA analyst Jack Ryan notices a series of suspicious bank transfers he is thrust into a dangerous field assignment. No longer safely behind his desk, Jack must do all he can to protect the world from a new breed of threatening terrorists. This series is a reboot of all the previous films based on Tom Clancy’s books that have had Alec Baldwin, Harrison Ford, Ben Affleck and Chris Pine play Jack Ryan.

Krasinski does an excellent job and is actually considered by many as the best Jack Ryan. If you like action shows and films, you’ll love Tom Clancy’s Jack Ryan as it is action-packed.

Who Is Lewis Hamilton?

Lewis Hamilton is a British Formula One driver who is currently signed with the Mercedes-AMG F1 Team, which is spearheaded by Toto Wolff. Lewis was born in Stevenage, Hertfordshire, United Kingdom on 7 January 1985. Lewis’ parents are Anthony Hamilton – who is of Grenadian descent – and Carmela Larbalestier – who is White British – making Lewis mixed-race. When he joined Formula One, he became the first black person to do so.

Lewis Hamilton has two older half-sisters, Samantha and Nicola, and a younger half-brother, Nicolas.

Lewis Hamilton showed a keen interest in car racing from a young age, when his father, Anthony, bought him a radio-controlled car, which he entered into competition. Hamilton ultimately finished second in the national British Radio Controlled Car Association championship when he was just 6 years old. His father followed this up by buying Lewis a go-kart and took on multiple jobs to help fund his racing career.

Lewis Hamilton Racing Career

Karting

Lewis’ father’s investment paid off, as Lewis won the British cadet karting championship in 1995 at just 10 years old, becoming the youngest driver to win the championship. Soon after, Lewis approached then McLaren F1 team principal Ron Dennis, and told him he wanted to race for his team one day.

In 1998, Ron Dennis gave Lewis a role in the McLaren driver development programme, which also included a clause in the contract that would give him the option of getting a seat in Formula One.

Formula One

After rising through the ranks in Formula Renault, Formula Three and GP2, Lewis Hamilton made his Formula 1 debut in 2007, racing for McLaren. In his first season, Lewis finished second in the Driver’s Championship by just one point behind winner, Kimi Räikkōnen. Hamilton’s teammate at the time, Fernando Alonso, left McLaren at the end of the season following a falling out with both Lewis and the team, pushing Lewis up to the number 1 driver position.

Lewis Hamilton won his first World Driver’s Championship in just his second season in Formula One, making him the youngest driver to ever win it at the time (a feat that has since been surpassed by Max Verstappen). Lewis continued to race with McLaren until the end of the 2012 season, after which he joined Mercedes in 2013.

While his first season with Mercedes didn’t end in an overall championship win, when new regulations were introduced in 2014, Hamilton began a period of dominance. It has been with Mercedes that Lewis Hamilton has won six more World Driver’s Championships and set the record for the most podiums, most race wins and most pole positions by any driver in Formula One history.

Activism

Image: @lewishamilton

Off the track, Lewis Hamilton has promoted a number of movements and donated, or become involved with numerous charitable organisations. Being the only black driver in Formula One and experiencing first-hand racial abuse at race weekends, Hamilton helped promote the Black Lives Matter movement during the 2020 season by taking the knee before every race. He also wore t-shirts in support of Black Lives Matter and the shooting of Breonna Taylor.

Lewis has also spoken out against human rights abuse, particularly in Middle Eastern countries, both in interviews and by wearing rainbow helmets at certain Grand Prix races in support of the LGBTQ+ community.

He has also spoken out about environmental and animal rights and has even set up his own plant-based burger restaurant in the UK called Neat Burger. Hamilton has said he has made changes in his personal life to be more environmentally friendly, such as selling his private jet and banning all plastic from both his office and his homes.

Lewis Hamilton Fashion

Lewis Hamilton often arrives at race weekends rocking various pieces of designer clothing. He has previously been seen wearing orange jumpsuits, full tracksuits and summer-worthy shirt and short combinations.

He is also a brand ambassador for Swiss watch brand IWC-Schaffhausen, and has collaborated with the company on several limited-edition models.

If you are looking for a new television show to watch, you’re in luck. We’ve gone through Binge’s extensive catalogue and have picked out the absolute best shows the streaming platform has to offer.

Whether you want a series that’ll last you for weeks to come or you want to binge (pun intended) it all in one or two sittings, and no matter what genre you’re in the mood for – comedy, crime, thriller, action, mystery, sci-fi, horror, drama – we’ve got you covered.

So, without further ado, these are the best shows on Binge.

American Horror Story

Image Credit: 20th Television/Disney Platform Distribution

8.0 IMDb score, stars Evan Peters, Sarah Paulson, Jessica Lange, Angela Basset, Kathy Bates, Lady Gaga & more, Drama, Horror & Thriller, released in 2011, 10 seasons

This critically acclaimed anthology series focuses on a different horror story every season, however, the majority of the cast stays the same and just plays different characters. You don’t necessarily have to watch the seasons in order but we highly recommend doing so, and we can’t say why because it’s a potential spoiler…

Gory, twisted, and a little camp, American Horror Story is worth watching for the excellent writing and top-tier performances from the entire cast.

Ballers

Image Credit: Warner Bros. Television Distribution

7.6 IMDb score, stars Dwayne Johnson & John David Washington, Comedy, Drama & Sport, released in 2015, 5 seasons

Ballers follows former all-star pro footballer Spencer Strasmore as he mentors current players during his retirement. Johnson brings his signature charm to Ballers, a show that’ll make you smile.

You’ll, obviously, enjoy Ballers if you’re a fan of football or Johnson.

Bored To Death

7.9 IMDb score, stars Jason Schwartzman, Zach Galifianakis & Ted Danson, Comedy, Crime & Drama, released in 2009, 3 seasons

A writer decides to moonlight as a private detective and uses methods from the classic detective novels he reads. Bored To Death is definitely an offbeat comedy but it’s hilarious and all three leads’ – Schwartzman, Galifianakis & Danson – performances are fantastic.

Some Season 1 episodes are a bit rocky but persevere; from Season 2 onwards, it’s truly great.

Chernobyl

Image Credit: Warner Bros. Television Distribution

9.4 IMDb score, stars Jessie Buckley, Jared Harris & Stellan Skarsgård, Drama, History & Thriller, released in 2019, 1 season

This mini-series is based on the true story of the Chernobyl nuclear power plant exploding in 1986 and follows the event, the aftermath and why the incident was covered up. Extremely compelling with well-written direction, dialogue and superb performances, there’s a reason why Chernobyl won 10 Emmys.

Chernobyl has been praised by pretty much everyone and has an almost-perfect rating on every review site, so just watch it.

Curb Your Enthusiasm

Image Credit: Warner Bros. Domestic Television Distribution/HBO

8.7 IMDb score, created by and stars Larry David, Comedy, released in 2000, 11 seasons

Larry David stars in Curb Your Enthusiasm as a fictionalised version of himself, similar to Jerry Seinfeld in Seinfeld, which was co-created by David. Honestly, this show is pretty much Seinfeld but about David instead and with improvisation; and the result is pure hilarity.

If you’re in the mood to laugh and laugh hard, put on Curb Your Enthusiasm.

Devs

7.7 IMDb score, stars Sonoya Mizuno & Nick Offerman, Drama, Mystery & Sci-Fi, released in 2020, 1 season

Devs follows a young computer engineer as she investigates her company’s secret development division because she believes they may be behind her boyfriend’s apparent suicide. With terrific acting performances and a gripping, interesting concept this show is a must-watch for sci-fi lovers.

If you liked the film Ex Machina, you’ll love Devs.

Game of Thrones

Image Credit: Warner Bros. Television Distribution

9.2 IMDb score, stars Emilia Clarke, Peter Dinklage, Sean Bean & Kit Harington, Action, Adventure & Drama, released in 2011, 8 seasons

Game of Thrones really doesn’t need an introduction; you’ve either already seen it or heard about how great it is from all of your mates. With shocking plots and tremendous performances from the entire cast, Game of Thrones is a show you have to watch at least once (although you have our permission to skip the last season).

If you like dark themes and intricate storytelling, you’ll definitely enjoy Game of Thrones.

House of the Dragon

8.6 IMDb score, stars Matt Smith, Paddy Considine & Rhys Ifans, Action, Adventure & Drama, released in 2022, 1 season

Speaking of Game of Thrones, this series is a prequel to it and we’d argue it’s just as good, if not better. Set 172 years before the birth of Daenerys Targaryen, House of the Dragon follows a succession war within House Targaryen itself.

If you loved Game of Thrones (even if you were badly hurt by GOT’s finale), House of the Dragon is a must-watch.

The Leftovers

Image Credit: Warner Bros. Television Distribution

8.3 IMDb score, stars Justin Theroux, Drama, Fantasy & Mystery, released in 2014, 3 seasons

The Leftovers is set three years after “The Sudden Departure”; a global event where 140 million people suddenly disappeared without a trace. The series follows police chief, Kevin Garvey, as he deals with a cult that formed shortly after the tragic event.

Thought-provoking, it’s a shame that The Leftovers didn’t become an extremely well-known popular series because it deserved it.

Mare of Easttown

8.5 IMDb score, stars Kate Winslet, Crime, Drama & Mystery, released in 2021, 1 season

A detective, whose son recently died, investigates the murder of a young woman in a small Pennsylvania town. Winslet picked up a ton of awards (and rightly so) for her performance in Mare of Easttown, which is well-written and compelling.

If you’re a lover of crime shows, you have to watch Mare of Easttown (if you haven’t already done so).

Mr. Robot

8.5 IMDb score, stars Rami Malek & Christian Slater, Crime, Drama & Thriller, released in 2015, 4 seasons

A brilliant young computer programmer, Elliot, spends his spare time vigilante hacking and is recruited by a mysterious underground organisation that plans to take down the corrupt corporation Elliot works for; this leads Elliot to a moral crossroads. Full of twists, this cyber-thriller is extremely original and engaging.

If you’re a fan of Black Mirror, Dexter or Hannibal, you’ll enjoy Mr. Robot.

Our Flag Means Death

7.8 IMDb score, stars Rhys Darby & Taika Waititi, Action, Comedy & Biography, released in 2022, 1 season

If you’re a fan of Taika Waititi, the Oscar-winner best known for directing Thor: Ragnarok and Jojo Rabbit, Our Flag Means Death is a must-watch. Set in the 1700s, the series follows Stede Bonnet as he leaves his aristocratic life behind to become a pirate.

Seriously, it’s a goofy, funny show about pirates. What’s not to love?

The Outsider

7.7 IMDb score, stars Ben Mendelsohn & Jason Bateman, Crime, Drama & Fantasy, released in 2020, 1 season

Based on the Stephen King novel of the same name, The Outsider follows a long-serving police officer as he investigates the murder of a young boy. However, when it looks like the case involves a supernatural force, the cop must question everything he knows.

With excellent acting from the entire cast, this is a Stephen King adaptation that you’ve simply got to watch.

Peacemaker

8.5 IMDb score, stars John Cena, created by James Gunn, Action, Adventure & Comedy, released in 2022, 1 season

Peacemaker is based on the DC Comics character of the same name and is actually a spin-off from Gunn’s 2021 film, The Suicide Squad. The series follows Christopher Smith, better known as Peacemaker, who would do anything to achieve peace; including murder.

If you’re a fan of Gunn’s Guardians Of The Galaxy films, you’ll like Peacemaker.

The Sopranos

Image Credit: Warner Bros. Television Distribution

9.2 IMDb score, stars James Gandolfini, Lorraine Bracco & Edie Falco, Crime & Drama, released in 1999, 6 seasons

Tony Soprano, a New Jersey mob boss, struggles with his family and work so secretly sees a therapist. Violent, dark and with touches of black, dry comedy, The Sopranos provides an interesting look into the life of a mobster.

The Sopranos is iconic so if you haven’t watched it, do so immediately.

Succession

Image Credit: Warner Bros. Television Distribution

8.8 IMDb score, stars Nicholas Braun, Brian Cox & Kieran Culkin, Drama, released in 2015, 3 seasons

The biggest media and entertainment conglomerate in the world is controlled by the Roy family. But the family’s world changes entirely when the head of the company (and family) decides to change how his successor will be chosen.

A great story and brilliant acting from the ensemble cast, what more could you want from a show?

Taskmaster

9.0 IMDb score, stars Greg Davies, Comedy & Game-Show, released in 2015, 12 seasons and multiple one-off specials

Every season, 5 different comedians are asked to do ridiculous tasks and are then scored on their attempts by comedian and actor Greg Davies. This show is hilarious for so many different reasons and if you want to laugh harder than you have before, Taskmaster is the show for you.

Sadly, not every season of Taskmaster is on Binge but you don’t have to watch the seasons in order.

True Detective

Image Credit: Warner Bros. Television Distribution

8.9 IMDb score, stars Matthew McConaughey, Woody Harrelson, Colin Farrell, Vince Vaughn, Rachel McAdams & Mahershala Ali, Crime, Drama & Mystery, released in 2014, 3 seasons

This anthology series focuses on a different story every season; although every season involves a detective investigating a devastating crime. The central mystery and acting in Seasons 1 and 3 is simply superb but Season 2’s quality does dip slightly. However, that being said, it’s still good; just not as good as the season before and after it.

If you enjoy crime shows, True Detective is a good one to binge.

The Walking Dead

8.1 IMDb score, stars Andrew Lincoln, Norman Reedus & Melissa McBride, released in 2010, Drama, Horror & Thriller, 11 seasons

Rick Grimes, a sheriff deputy, awakes from a coma and discovers the world is now dealing with a zombie apocalypse. He soon becomes the leader of a group of people trying to survive.

At its core, The Walking Dead is about survival and is a thrilling show that’s well-written and has a fantastic ensemble cast.

Westworld

Image Credit: Warner Bros. Television Distribution

8.6 IMDb score, Evan Rachel Wood, Jeffrey Wright, Ed Harris, Tessa Thompson & James Marsden, Drama, Mystery & Sci-Fi, released in 2016, 3 seasons

Westworld is an amusement park where, thanks to artificial consciousness, guests can live out their wildest fantasies – even twisted, dark ones – with absolutely no consequences. Enthralling with an interesting concept, Westworld is for those who love sci-fi films and shows.

If you enjoy Black Mirror, you’ll also enjoy Westworld.

What We Do In The Shadows

Image Credit: 20th Television/Disney Media Distribution

8.6 IMDb score, stars Kayvan Novak, Matt Berry & Natasia Demetriou, created by Jemaine Clement, Comedy, Fantasy & Horror, released in 2019, 3 seasons

Based on the film of the same name that was written by and starred both Clement and Taika Waititi, What We Do In The Shadows is a hilarious mockumentary. Following the lives of three vampires who have lived together for over 100 years, the series has seriously great comedic writing.

If you like offbeat comedies like the original film this series was based on, Flight of the Conchords, or The IT Crowd, you’ll love What We Do In The Shadows.

‘James Bond’ Producer Says The Next 007 Actor Has To Be At Least 30
‘James Bond’ Producer Says The Next 007 Actor Has To Be At Least 30

Michael G Wilson, veteran James Bond producer, has said the next actor to play 007 can’t be young; he’s got to be “thirty-something”…

Everyone is dying to know who will be the next James Bond. Therefore, everyone and anyone who’s connected to the franchise has been asked whether they know which lucky actor is set to win the part.

For example, former Bond actor, Pierce Brosnan was recently asked who he thought should play 007 next (his answer? “I don’t care”). And longtime Bond producer, Barbara Broccoli was recently pushed for details – to no avail. Broccoli said she’s “nowhere near” ready to cast a new James Bond and is instead focusing on the next Bond villain.

Sadly, this sentiment has just been reiterated by Broccoli’s partner, Michael G Wilson. Speaking to Deadline, Wilson stressed that the casting process for a new 007 has not started yet, “No matter what others tell you.”

However, Wilson did reveal that the next Bond will not – under any circumstances – be played by a young actor. So to anyone hoping for a Bond origin film or for Tom Holland to play Bond next, now’s the time to abandon those hopes.

Tom Holland and Idris Elba are likely out of the running to play James Bond next – as Holland’s too young and Elba’s too old… Image Credit: (L) Getty Images (R) Shutterstock

“We’ve tried looking at younger people in the past. But trying to visualise it doesn’t work. Remember, Bond’s already a veteran. He’s had some experience. He’s a person who has been through the wars, so to speak. He’s probably been in the SAS or something.”

Michael G Wilson

Wilson continued to drive his point home and then said an actor in his thirties will likely play the next Bond.

“[Bond] isn’t some kid out of high school that you can bring in and start off. That’s why it works for a thirty-something.”

Michael G Wilson

This means fan-favourites to play Bond next, Idris Elba and Tom Hardy may not be as likely to get the role as we used to think as they’re 50 years old and 45 years old, respectively. But other fan-favourites Henry Cavill, aged 39, and Regé-Jean Page, aged 34, fit the age bracket perfectly…

Zlatan Ibrahimovic Buys Himself Two Ferraris For His Birthday
Zlatan Ibrahimovic Buys Himself Two Ferraris For His Birthday

It’s not every day that a god turns 41 – so the irascible football legend has treated himself to a particularly luxe birthday present, apparently buying two extremely expensive Ferraris to celebrate.

Zlatan is well-known for his lavish taste in cars: some of the vehicles in his collection include an Audi S8, a Lamborghini Urus, a Maserati GranTurismo and a Porsche 918 Spyder, among others.

He has a particular passion for Ferraris, though. He already owns an Enzo Ferrari and a Ferrari Monza, and now it looks like he’s added an 812 Competizione A and a Daytona SP3 to his garage, with the AC Milan striker posting a photo of the two cars in an online configurator to Instagram with the simple caption “Happy Birthday to Zlatan”.

It’s a bit mysterious and one hell of a flex… Especially when you consider that together, those cars probably set him back well over US$3 million.

A Ferrari 812 Competizione A in ‘Rosso Ferrari F1-75′ in Ferrari’s configurator.

The Ferrari 812 Competizione A is a limited-production, track-focused version of the 812 Superfast. Specifically, it’s the convertible version of the Competizione (‘A’ stands for Aperta, Italian for “open”).

It’s powered by a beefier version of the already meaty 6.5L V12 that powers the standard 812 and boasts extensive aerodynamic upgrades plus an independent four-wheel steering system. It makes 610kW/692Nm and will do 0-100km/h in 2.9 seconds.

Zlatan’s optioned his in Rosso Ferrari F1-75 – a colour named after Ferrari’s current Formula 1 car – and depending on what other options he’s gone for, it’ll set him back at least €578,000 (~ US$568,450 / AU$872,575).

A Ferrari Daytona SP3 in ‘Bianco Avus’ in Ferrari’s configurator.

Even more expensive and rare is his new Daytona SP3: the latest in Ferrari’s ultra-limited ‘Icona’ series, which pays homage to classic Ferrari models and encompasses some of Ferrari’s rarest vehicles, after the Monza SP1 and SP2.

Just as the Monza was inspired by post-war Ferrari race cars such as the 166 MM, 250 Testarossa and 750 Monza, the Daytona was inspired by 1960s race cars, especially the 330 P4 endurance race car which won the 24 Hours of Daytona in 1967.

Like the 812 Competizione, it’s powered by Ferrari’s 6.5L V12 but in the Daytona it’s mid-mounted and makes 620kW/697Nm. Also like the 812 Competizione it’ll do 0-100 in 2.9sec but it’s a bit faster from 0-200 as well as 100-200km/h.

Zlatan’s gone for Bianco Avus for this targa-topped coupe, which costs at least €2,559,572 (~US$2,517,390 / AU$3,864,765). Happy birthday indeed.

Ripped Richard Branson Shares Workout To Keep You Kicking In Your 70s
Ripped Richard Branson Shares Workout To Keep You Kicking In Your 70s

We’ve waxed lyrical here at DMARGE about staying ripped in your 50s, but Virgin Group founder Richard Branson just proved you can indeed stay ripped in your 70s too, with a scorching workout anyone can try.

The British billionaire with flamboyant hair recently took to LinkedIn to share a video of himself working out to promote his Virgin Active chain of gyms. Captioning the post, “Give it your all, whether your all is a marathon or just a 10 minute workout. It all counts,” beardy Branson can be seen pushing his body to its limit, and proving age really is just a number when it comes to keeping fit.

WATCH: Richard Branson performs a scorching workout

Admittedly, Branson doesn’t perform any squats, deadlifts or bench presses with immense loads, but the movements he does perform all act as great full-body exercises that will serve to strengthen his muscles and keep his joints alive and kicking.

Richard Branson’s workout includes the following exercises:
  • Banded Row: Resistance bands provide a great medium for resistance training. While you’re unlikely to see quite the same level of gains as you would with weights, they can certainly help to maintain your fitness level, build some muscle and improve mobility and flexibility.

The banded row targets your upper body muscles, particularly the rear delts and rhomboids (the muscles around your scapula). Your biceps and core will also receive some attention, since it’s a pulling movement, and your core will be engaged to help stabilise your body.

To perform, attach a resistance band to an anchor point at around chest height. Hold the resistance band in both hands with an overhand grip with your arms out straight shoulder-width apart. Now, with your shoulders locked down and your core engaged, pull the band towards your sternum, flaring your elbows out. Pull until your elbows go behind your back, pause for a second or two and then slowly return your arms to the starting position.

    Repeat for 10 – 12 reps for 3 – 4 sets.

  • Battle Ropes: Battle ropes are an excellent tool for building strength and endurance, as they’re usually pretty heavy and incredibly long, meaning you need to use all your strength to get them to move. All in all, they’re great to include in any well-rounded cardio workout.

To use battle ropes, first you’re obviously going to need a set. Unless you have the space at home, then you’re likely going to have to head to a gym. While there are a number of variations for ways to use battle ropes, in Richard’s case, he’s performing the classic battle ropes wave movement.

To perform, hold a rope in each hand with a neutral grip, with your arms at full length. Squat down slightly, brace your core, and begin alternating moving each arm up and down. If you’ve not used battle ropes before, then you’ll soon realise you’re going to need a lot more strength than you perhaps realised to get them to move properly.

Keep swinging for 1 to 2 minutes per set, for a total of 3 to 4 sets.

  • Chin-Ups: Chin-ups are the slightly easier-to-perform sibling of the pull-up, but promise to be just as effective at working your upper body. The main difference between chin-ups and pull-ups lies in the grip. Chin-ups see you using a supinated (underhand) grip while pull-ups use a pronated (overhand) grip.

To perform, grab hold of and hang from a set of handles or a bar (above you, naturally) with a supinated grip. Lock down your shoulders, brace your core, and pull yourself up to the bar. Many people will use their biceps to do this, but this draws attention away from the chest muscles, with also stand to benefit from the chin-up exercise.

To navigate this, focus more on pulling your elbows down to the ground beneath you.

Repeat for as many reps as you can muster for 3 to 4 sets. Chin-ups are often seen as the easier exercise compared to pull-ups, primarily due to the narrower grip.

If you want to increase the difficulty, you can perform pull-ups instead. A classic upper body exercise if ever there was one, pull-ups are one of those exercises that look easy to perform, but in practice, they’re anything but. We’ve previously heard from Conor McGregor as to how to perform the perfect pull-up, so we encourage you to check that out for some helpful hints.

Richard Branson performs all three exercises to perfection, which for a 72-year-old, is pretty damn impressive. So, what’s your excuse? Get yourself down to a gym, incorporate these exercises into your routine, and you too could look as ripped as Branson by the time you hit 70.

The Truth About Qantas’ Tapegate ‘Scandal’
The Truth About Qantas’ Tapegate ‘Scandal’

Qantas has pissed a lot of Australians off this year. Like many other airlines, it has struggled to cope with the 2022 travel boom, after laying off lots of staff during the pandemic. The latest ‘gaffe’ Qantas has been criticised for, however, is not quite what it seems…

By now, you’re probably familiar with the lingo that people tend to use when they are angry at an airline. “Worst airline ever,” “absolute shambles” and “never flying again” seem to be right up there on Twitter. And in many cases it is absolutely deserved – whether it’s United Airlines (allegedly) doing the unthinkable or whether it’s EasyJet cancelling a flight at the last minute. Emirates even caused quite a commotion earlier this year when they appeared to land a flight in Brisbane with a dirty great hole in it (watch the video of that below).

WATCH: Emirates Jet With Hole In It Blows Minds

Qantas has fallen prey to more passenger tirades than usual this year, with staffing issues and the extra-operational challenges of COVID-19 seeing the airline’s performance drop significantly below its usual lofty standards (in normal times Qantas is known as the best airline in Australia).

Qantas recently apologised to customers, offered many people compensation and vowed to do better. And it seemed like things were getting back on track… Until the following image went viral. Posted to Twitter and Instagram by international opera singer David Wakeham, the image showed what appeared to be a Qantas wing patched up with tape.

The jokes soon began, with “tape on a plane” and “she’ll be right” type quips soon flowing (it should be noted Qantas did not say “she’ll be right” – that was left to the hands of the self-proclaimed comedians of Twitter). Mr Wakeham, for his part, wrote: “When choosing your favourite airline, choose wisely. @Qantas [sic] Profits before safety.”

However, according to the ABC’s fact-checking resource CheckMate (which calls itself “your inoculation against misinformation”), it’s not all it seems.

According to CheckMate, the tape in the photo is known as “speed tape” and is used regularly in the aviation world. In this case, CheckMate says, it was probably put on to cover peeling paint, likely on a Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner.

CheckMate spoke to researchers from the Information Futures Lab, who pointed them to a 2020 document from the US Department of Transportation’s Federal Aviation Administration (FAA).

According to the document, certain model 787 jets are “prone to paint adhesion failures due to Ultra Violet (UV) ray damage.”

After CheckMate published its report, Twitter went on to have a second wind, with netizens yet again debating the issue.

One Twitter user wrote: “You look out a plane window to see silvery tape on the wing. Do you a) ask cabin crew, leading to a short explanation about speed tape so you can google more on it, or b) post an excitable and wrong tweet about Qantas repairing planes with duct tape.”

Another said: “What’s the misinformation? The photo is actually of tape on a plane wing. Regardless what adjective you wish to apply to the tape, it’s still tape & not commonly seen on planes in wide circulation.”

In its report, CheckMate also points out that peeling paint on the wings of Boeing 787-9 aircraft has been reported on a fair bit lately, suggesting it might be a widespread issue. A spokeswoman for Air New Zealand, for instance, told Stuff that it was a worldwide phenomenon.

A spokesperson for Boeing also weighed in, CheckMate reports, telling Simple Flying: “[T]he peeling does not affect the structural integrity of the wing, and does not affect the safety of flight.”

Finally, a spokesperson for Australia’s Civil Aviation Safety Authority (CASA) told CheckMate it was “aware of paint peeling or being removed on some aircraft for various reasons” and that “any repairs…must be made in accordance with approved maintenance instructions.”

“Approved temporary repairs do not pose a safety risk to passengers.”

Australia’s Civil Aviation Safety Authority

There you have it. May you sleep a little easier tonight, Australia.
