Cufflinks Are The Most Subtle Way To Sharpen Any Look; Here’s How To Wear Them
Cufflinks Are The Most Subtle Way To Sharpen Any Look; Here’s How To Wear Them

For the modern-day gent, cufflinks are about as close as you get to jewellery without actually wearing jewellery.

The ultimate humble brag, this sleeve candy can take an otherwise boring shirt and give it a touch of personal flare like nothing else. But which type should you wear and when?

First popularised in the 1700s, there’s a lot of history and tradition around cufflinks – some of which still stands today.

Here, we explain how to know your double panels from your toggle backs and the best way to tackle this ultimate finishing touch.

The mere mention of cufflinks immediately makes me think of Bond. James Bond. There’s a timelessness to them that conjures images of tuxedos and smoking jackets; in short, the good stuff. The specific kind of cufflinks you wear with a penguin suit requires a bit more discernment though.

First and foremost, let’s talk shirts. Any man worth his salt should have a dinner shirt that requires studs – see Bradley Cooper and Sam Smith below for reference. These take the place of buttons and can add an extra element to your standard tux. Generally speaking, the studs should match the accompanying cufflinks which can be made of anything from black onyx to diamonds. Talk about bling, eh?

If 24 carats aren’t really within budget though, look further afield to silver iterations from the likes of Georg Jensen and Mont Blanc. With a dinner suit, simplicity is key – look for elegant, sculptural links that will last. After all, how often are you really slipping into black tie?

Gents don’t often get the chance to make a splash at the office – after all, there’s only so many ways you can style a navy or charcoal suit. In contrast, cufflinks provide an opportunity to stand out from the crowd.

When choosing a pair of cufflinks for the office, look for those that have personality without verging onto the side of vulgar. We’ve all seen that guy who wears a pair of novelty horse shaped cufflinks during the racing carnival. Don’t be him.

Being a silver watch wearer, I generally stick with matching cufflinks that have simple designs – a knot for example – or elegant detailing like a monogram or a crest. If you do want to dabble in something slightly more flamboyant, opt for resin and sterling silver options. These will maintain their shine and not scratch as easily as stainless steel versions.

‘Casual’ isn’t the first dress code that comes to mind when you mention cufflinks. In fact, it probably doesn’t even register as a possibility. Despite this, there are very specific circumstances that can warrant their use – all of which involve a blazer.

If you are looking at dabbling with cufflinks and a sports coat, ensure that you choose a fine set (ideally a set of monogrammed heirloom double panels). These offer a sportier aesthetic compared to heavy contemporary styles. When looking for inspiration, turn to the British landed gentry and almost every Ralph Lauren ad you’ve ever seen. Tweed jackets and riding jodhpurs are the name of the game here.

As a rule, I only ever wear cufflinks with a French cuff shirt. They tend to have a weight and formality which feels in keeping with the tradition of this sartorial accoutrement. However, this isn’t the only option.

The inimitable Peter Johnson of Peter Johnson Tailors makes a strong case for the single-cuff shirt. As he says, ‘they (single cuff shirts) are a little more streamlined and interesting with the right link’. And as the gent below demonstrates, this is a look that works particularly well on a slim armed jacket, avoiding any of the flaring that can happen with the more traditional double cuff.

When it comes to bolstering your look, there’s no need to go wildly overboard. You’ve already managed to tackle a double French cuff – the hard work is done. One thing which can up the ante even further though is a tasteful tie pin.

When accessorising, opt for a set of plain gold or silver double panel cufflinks and pair them with thin matching tie pin. When selecting your pin, look further afield to antique shops. They often have elegant pieces that come with a good story. Alternatively, the likes of Mr. Porter and Harrolds have a perfectly serviceable range.

Cufflinks are hard wearing – they are designed to knock against the side of desks and be dragged through blue biro. This being said, there are a few ways that you can keep them in pristine condition and ensure they last.

First and foremost, store them in a compartmentalised box or a leather cufflink case while traveling. This will ensure that they don’t chip against one another. Linley offer an outstanding box that is as beautiful as it is functional.

Secondly, keep a cloth handy in the office to wipe away the dust and grime that can accumulate during the 9-5 grind. This can easily build up and detract from the detail on your links.

Finally – and perhaps most importantly – ensure they get a good wearing. There’s nothing sadder than a beautiful set of cufflinks left in the box and regular wear ensures they don’t tarnish.

How to wear cufflinks with tuxedo?

Your cufflinks should match with the studs in your tuxedo. Invest in elegant pieces that will last, like diamonds and black onyx. Gold and silver cufflinks also look great with tuxedos.

How to wear cufflinks with work suit?

Match your cufflinks with your watch. Opt for simple designs or detailing. Stainless steel is a good choice, but you can also consider options like sterling silver and resin.

How to care for cufflinks?

Polish your cufflinks using a soft cloth to wipe away the accumulated grime and dust, then store in a leather cufflink case or compartmentalized box.

Male Escort Reveals His Most ‘Interesting’ Requests From Clients

The life of a male escort is often over dramatised. And as American Gigolo and its Hollywood counterparts deal in stereotypes, many people envisage the world of male sex work to be either far more glamorous—or far more sterile and transactional—than it really is. The truth, as is often the case, lies somewhere in the middle. While no article can articulate the subtleties of an entire profession, it can draw out some of its most interesting aspects, to provide a more nuanced perspective. Which is why we interviewed Lorenzo, a former active male escort and CEO of A Gentleman Caller.Lorenzo has run the full gamut—from active escort to business owner. As such, he knows the industry inside out, explaining how, “Any escort will tell you the first few encounters are extremely nerve wrecking and quite daunting: this profession isn’t for everyone.”Considering the ‘interesting’ requests Lorenzo told us he had received over his career, it’s not hard to see why. You see, being a male escort is not just about getting a woman’s “rocks off.”According to Lorenzo, you must highly be skilled at, “Accomodating a woman’s needs both physically and mentally.” Which is why life experience plays a big part in the male escort industry.

“90% of the male escort industry is about companionship.”

We then asked him if he’d had any ‘interesting’ experiences escorting; the understatement of the interview.“A lady had booked me for a Saturday evening consisting of a home cooked meal and a bottle of wine. When I arrived, I noted several vehicles surrounding the property, along with loud music coming from the residence. Once inside, I realised there was no wining or dining… But a Hen’s Night that was in full swing.”

“I won’t go into detail, but it was one of the biggest paying jobs I had ever completed. I don’t remember hitting the pillow once I returned home.”

He also recalled being a “plus one” at a wedding in a client’s attempt to make the groom jealous. Which was, “An interesting night to say the least.”If this lifestyle piques your interest, Lorenzo warned that, if you harbour hopes of becoming a male escort, you won’t be an instant success overnight: “It takes time. Any seasoned male escort will tell you the most successful escorts are the most patient.”Also.“Personality is key. While your ‘equipment’ and prowess in the bedroom are obvious elements to a successful career, your attitude needs to be on point.”There you have it, fellas. Qantas Launch New Singapore First Lounge With An Exclusive Virtual Reality Tour
Qantas Launch New Singapore First Lounge With An Exclusive Virtual Reality Tour

And you thought we were going to teach you how to teleport, but close enough.

Earlier today we were granted a nice opportunity to sit down for lunch in Sydney’s Qantas First Lounge. The motive: To teleport ourselves over to the soon-to-be-revamped Singapore First Lounge at Changi Airport.

To achieve this feat Qantas enlisted the help of virtual reality to bring to life the latest fit out from long-time collaborator and industrial designer, David Caon.

The lounge which was unveiled via VR is set to begin its real fit out this April before completion by the end of 2019. What’s exciting about the whole project though is that VR users could step inside the finished lounge before its actual completion. Whilst limited in its roaming range (it is just a lounge after all), the details of the interior design were quite surprising.

Stare at the ground and you can decipher the carpet weave. Stare at a counter top and you can see the marble swirls. Heck, there were even static bartenders at the cocktail lounge who smiled at you but didn’t offer you any G&Ts in the virtual word. Might need to have a word with their manager.

Nonetheless experiencing the technology applied to airlines and airline lounges was pretty exciting. We asked Caon how accurate the virtual rendering would be to the final product and he claims it will be 100-percent matched in terms of aesthetics and materials.

Whilst digital renderings have long served as a way to launch an airline lounge, Qantas wanted a more effective way to preview their new products and fine tune them. This approach is the first time the technology has been applied to their lounges. The next chapter for the VR technology in Qantas’ push for better design will be in the twelve A380 aircraft which Caon will once again head. One of the quirkier VR appointments Caon has conceptualised for the flying kangaroo is a unique lounge in the nose of the aircraft which is where the idea for VR started.

Qantas International CEO Alison Webster explained that VR gives the airline a completely new way to make sure a lounge meets customer needs well before the build begins.

“While we already use VR technology to promote destinations, this is the first time we have used it to better understand a lounge design. Being able to immerse ourselves in a virtual lounge gives us a more accurate sense of space and an understanding of how it will look to scale,” she said.

Speaking of the plush and modern interior fit out of the Singapore lounge, Caon added that a neutral colour palette, luxurious materials and leafy green highlights will make customers feel relaxed as soon as they enter the lounge.

“The interiors achieve a synergy with other Qantas First Lounges on the network, using key materials like marble and oak from the Sydney flagship lounge, combined with finishes reflecting the lively culture of
Singapore,” said Caon.

“With a continued focus on wellness, we’ll be looking at including the latest advances in light technology,
allowing passengers to better synchronise their body clocks with future time zones.”

The end of 2019 can’t come soon enough for platinum members venturing north on long haul flights through Changi.

Airbus Officially Ends Production Of The A380 Superjumbo
Airbus Officially Ends Production Of The A380 Superjumbo

If you’ve yet to get a chance to fly on the Airbus A380 then your chances are about to get slimmer. The European aircraft manufacturer today announced that it will stop production of its double decker superjumbo A380 in 2021. The move comes as a result of dwindling plane sales for the world’s biggest passenger jet. This is despite the fact that the company recorded an increase in profits in 2018.The French-German built plane debuted back in 2005 as a genuine challenger to Boeing’s long-serving 747. Things haven’t worked out for Airbus though with the decision to scrap the A380 coming after Emirates pared back their order of the model from 162 to 123 aircraft. As a result, Airbus announced that it had no backlog of A380s to build hence the decision to cease production. The writing was already on the wall back in January when the company revealed that it would discontinue the A380 if no new orders came in.This development will come as a hit for Emirates, the A380’s biggest customer who chose to build their global branding around the aircraft model. In a statement Emirates Chairman Sheikh Ahmed bin Saeed al-Maktoum said that, “Emirates has been a staunch supporter of the A380 since its inception.”“While we are disappointed to have to give up our order, and sad that the programme could not be sustained, we accept that this is the reality of the situation.”Airbus CEO Tom Enders also expressed his feelings over the situation, calling the A380 an “outstanding technical and industrial achievement” whose retirement will be painful for A380 communities.According to analysts, the A380’s demise came because airlines were reluctant to spend money on an expensive aircraft which required airports to build new runways and modify terminals to suit its size. Not helping the situation were production delays and cost blowouts which eventually led to restructuring and job losses.RELATED: Why The Airbus A350 Should Be Your Only Flight Of Choice

The Most Effective Ways Men Can Fight Hair Loss
The Most Effective Ways Men Can Fight Hair Loss

It’s the bane of every ageing man. Hair loss. By the time most men hit thirty they can expect to experience some form of a shifting hair cycle. This, unfortunately includes the futilities of thinning hair.

Not everything is constant in the human body though. External factors can sometimes lead men to lose their hair faster than nature intended and today we’re outlining a few of these scenarios which should help men identify which category their hair loss is falling into – alongside preventative measures you can take.

Quick disclaimer: Hair loss cannot be solved with a magic pill or tonic (sorry Homer fans). It takes patience and consultation to identify the source of the problem causing your hair loss. Only then can the right remedy be applied to rejuvenate those fallen follicles.

Causes Of Hair Loss

Hair loss can come in various forms which are both naturally occurring through genetics or self inflicted.

The latter form of hair loss falls into three distinct categories:

Alopecia Areata – This is the sudden loss of large clumps of hair around your scalp
Telogen Effluvium – This is the most common condition amongst those who stress, causing more hairs than normal to fall out
Trichotillomania – This is a psychological condition which sees a person pulling out their own hair without realising

With Telogen Effluvium being the most common form hair loss occurring in men after genetics, it’s important to know what you’re up against. The condition occurs when the body stops giving orders to grow more hair than usual. Hairs possess a growing lifecycle of two years before they stop and fall out two months after stop growing.

When the body orders more hairs than usual to cease growing, more hair will fall out two months later. If you’re losing hair from stress then you can reserve some relief in knowing that it can be rejuvenated with some T.L.C and a lot of patience.

Men who have the natural bald gene will find it harder to fight the effects but can go for remedies to slow down the inevitable process or more drastic options which have also been outlined here.

The cardinal rule must be reiterated though. Any hair loss is still considered hair loss so seeing a doctor or specialist about its effects is paramount in accordance to these helping solutions.

Nutrition & Diet

The most fundamental way to combat hair loss is through the foods you consume.

It might not be a sole saving grace to hair loss but there’s proof that a bad diet can starve your hair of the nutrients and protein it needs to strengthen hair. In other words, eat good fats like avocados and protein-rich foods such as chicken, fish, eggs and spinach.

These are all great sources of B vitamins which can affect the formation of hair cells and hence growth.

Get The Right Amount Of Sleep

Lacking sleep may have been a piece of pie during your younger days as a student but as you age the amount of rest you your body receives has a direct correlation to its health.

Getting in 7-8 hours a night is a good benchmark as it helps the body regulate hormones, hormones which helps to repair and regenerate hair. If you’ve been stressed at work or anything due to personal issues, this can affect your sleep patterns and in turn cause an internal disturbance.

Laser Light Therapy

Laser treatments, whether at home or in a clinic won’t help you grow new hair. Rather they help the remaining follicles strengthen through stimulating blood flow on the scalp. The downside to laser therapy is that the procedure needs to be repeated on a regular basis until results arise. Other than that it doesn’t leave any scarring behind and will suit guys who have experienced some excessive shedding and want to save their remaining strands.

Minoxidil

Also known as Regaine, Minoxidil is one of two FDA-approved drugs designed for hair loss. What it does is help slow down the hair loss process. The only downside is that if you stop taking the drug you’ll lose any hair you’ve grown. The side effects of Minoxidil can include itchiness and chest pain. They are also readily available from chemists across Australia.

How To Turn An Everyday White Shirt Into A Sharp & Stylish Affair
How To Turn An Everyday White Shirt Into A Sharp & Stylish Affair

The white shirt is man’s greatest sartorial tool. Simple, versatile and the epitome of gentlemanly elegance, this wardrobe mainstay will take you from the office to drinks and back again.

Historically a symbol of wealth and distinction (‘white collar’ doesn’t come from just anywhere) white shirts still hold much of their premium appeal, particularly when worn the right way. But whereas once colour alone was enough to separate you from the masses, the ubiquity of the white shirt today means you need to up the ante when it comes to standing out in this classic piece.

White Shirt With Jeans

Pretty much the oldest trick in the book, jeans with a white shirt straddles that fine line between sophistication and cool like nothing else. And whether you’ve gone for a pair of distressed skinny legs – as per Mr. West above – or you’re wearing a slightly more polished iteration of the look with an indigo denim boot cut, this is a combination guaranteed to work.

As is often the case with simplicity, the devil is in the details. Choosing the right style shirt is of utmost importance and it all comes down to occasion. If you’re simply updating your regular t-shirt and jeans, more casual shirts are a great option. I’d opt for a chambray or a plain poplin – preferably with a button-down collar. This will stop the collar from slouching around your neck and help the shirt sit across your shoulders.

On the flipside, if you’re scaling up your jeans for a nice dinner, opt for a fitted shirt with a dense weave. The starchiness will help elevate the denim and give the illusion of some serious effort – even if you’ve done nothing of the sort.

White Shirt With A Suit

It takes a lot for me to stray from a white shirt when suiting up. It’s the perfect blank canvas for a tie and pocket square and is pretty much universally flattering. For the day to day, nothing beats a dark navy or grey two piece with a white sateen finish shirt.

But where to start? Sometimes buying a white business shirt can feel like finding a needle in a haystack, the sheer number of options overwhelming. However, there are a few key parameters that can make the experience a little less daunting (and will impress every sales person you meet).

First and foremost, know what cut you’re after. Any good outfitter should fit you properly, starting with a measurement of the neck and then moving to the torso. Next, think about what cuff and collar you’d like. My personal preference is a French cuff (the one that requires cuff links) and a semi-cut away collar. Wherever possible, also go for a concealed placard. They’re small details but make a world of difference, particularly if you’re trying to get ahead in the rat race.

White Shirt With Shorts

Nothing says ‘summer’ quite like a white linen shirt and a pair of Bermuda shorts. A staple for the warmer bits of the year, this iteration of the white shirt will be one you turn to time and time again and it’s worth investing. Go for a high quality French linen that has some weight. It will develop gentle creases over time and gives you an enviable sense of nonchalance.

The linen shirt is also a great opportunity to play with details, whether it be experimenting with a Mandarin collar, trying out a breast pocket or even dabbling with a short sleeve (not for the faint of heart). Venroy is a great spot to start your search with options that are beach to bar friendly.

White Shirt With Chinos & Linen

A shirt with chinos is just about one of the dullest looks you can describe. And yet, adding a white shirt into the mix can make a world of difference, taking an otherwise workaday ensemble and turning it into something special. Pair a white Oxford with olive coloured, tab waisted linen trousers to give your regular kit some serious style punch.

Alternatively, the simplicity of a white shirt offers limitless opportunity in terms of trouser styles and patterns. Why not use this as an opportunity to try out a print like a pinstripe or dabble with something bolder? The gent below makes a strong case for taking an otherwise classic look and pushing it the extra mile with cropped black and white striped chinos.

White Shirt Appropriate Shoes

The shoes you pair with a white shirt depend entirely on the rest of your outfit and where you’re headed. For a night out, I balance a white shirt and navy trousers with some slick white sneakers – think Oliver Cabell or even a pair of Stan Smiths.

If, however, you’re needing to err on the side of fancy, you’re fully permitted to have some fun in the shoe department. Look to more experimental loafer brands like Santoni or even local, Aquila, to experiment with boldly coloured suedes and tassels.

How To Care For A White Shirt

There’s nothing worse than a white shirt that’s, well, not white. And though this sounds obvious, it’s very easy for the best asset in your wardrobe to turn stale.

To prevent this, there’s only one word you need to know; bleach. This miracle worker will ensure that you’re looking fresh and that you’re maintaining a true white – not that unpleasant grey that can creep into some wardrobes.

Perhaps even more important than bleach though is knowing when to call it quits. White shirts naturally colour and age – particularly in your high-wear zones like the collar and around the arm pits. If you notice that these spots are starting to yellow, do everyone a favour and replace it with a new shirt. I promise you’ll feel better for it.

Forget Ibiza; This Is The New Country Single Men Are Finding Love In
Forget Ibiza; This Is The New Country Single Men Are Finding Love In

Empty beaches. Humming salsa bars. Dulcet guitar. Drums. Cuba reconciles the adjectives “lively” and “chill” in the best way possible. But if I asked you to come up with a list of destinations a solo traveller was most likely to score a date, a communist state probably wouldn’t be the first place to come to mind. However, as you’re about to discover, Cuba is right up there with Rome, New York and Paris.

Besides Havana (Cuba’s capital) sitting at number four on Refinery 29’s list of the world’s best cities for solo female travellers, Cuba is also known as a place women go to embrace their feminine sexuality. As podcast host and journalist Megan Tan posits: “In the U.S., their bodies would be judged, but here (in Cuba) they seemed to blend in — a freedom that’s so unfamiliar to me.”

“As I took a cab into Havana, everywhere I looked, there were women and girls flaunting their femininity… When they walk, there’s a strength in their strut, as if they’re saying, ‘I have nothing to hide and nothing to be ashamed of.'”

Cuba has also been endorsed by The Journal,G-Adventures and World Dating Guides as a great place to meet friendly locals, despite its restrictive government. And we’d imagine thwarting “police state” rules with a newfound romantic partner—should you find one—only makes the whole deal even more enticing.

From its romantic Airbnbs to its sumptuous cuisine – here’s why single men are increasingly choosing to visit Cuba along with five other reasons.

Cuba Is A Solo Female Traveller Hotspot

We touched on this earlier, but if those seductive insights didn’t convince you, take it from a stalwart of travel guides: The Lonely Planet, “Cuba is the fastest-growing spot for solo female travellers… report(ing) a 42% increase in solo bookings by travellers between 2015 and 2017, with women leading the way with a 45% increase compared with a 40% increase for men.”

“The rise in total solo bookings to Cuba alone increas(ed) by 371% from 2016 to 2017.”

“Solo travel,” The 2018 Lonely Planet article continues, “Was once seen as brave and risky for female travellers, but a shift in attitude has meant that it is now viewed as an adventurous, exciting experience… (And) Cuba is the destination that seems most appealing.” Although the statistics for 2018-2019 are still in the making, a Hostelworld report found this trend is, “set to continue.”

Cuba Is Also A Male Traveller Hotspot

Whatever your sexual preference(s), Cuba is seeing an uptick of adventurous young travellers of both genders, with men experiencing a 40% increase between 2015 and 2017. So if you play your cards right you’ll be receiving Daiquiris and Mojitos from every direction.

In terms of meeting people during the day, Old Havana and the Malecon are good places to strike up a casual conversation.

Dancing The Night Away Is An Expectation, Not A Frivolity

As tourist guide ViaHero points out: “No partner? No problem! Dance is the language of Cuba, and there are plenty of locals who will take the lead.” And if the thought of stuttering through your already-awkward icebreakers in a foreign language is all too much, you can always hit up a local guide, who’ll give you top tips on where the cool cats are hanging out for a night (or three) of dancing. And don’t forget to dress up.

Popular nightclubs include:

There Are Adventurous Activities Galore

From showing off your biceps climbing Pico Turquino (the tallest peak on the island, standing at 6,476 ft tall) to surfing the east coast (only between August and mid-November) there’s far more to a Cuba date than cycling tours and snorkelling.

“Solo travellers are heading to more adventurous spots off the beaten path,” (Lonely Planet).

There’s also insane scuba diving, luscious national parks and intrepid sailing experiences to explore if the pastel colours of the city get too much.

It Has Awesome Airbnb’s

It’s been four years since Airbnb expanded into Cuba. It now has more than 300 Airbnb offerings, some of which put a Santorini villa to shame. Given this, it’s almost harder to let your date down than it is to impress them.

As reported by Refinery 29, Cuba is Airbnb’s fastest-growing vacation market ever, featuring two-story colonial houses from $176 a night, luxury beachfront villas from $105 a night, and boutique B&B’s from $60 a night and mountainside villas from $40 a night.

It Is The Undisputed King Of Cuban Cigars

There’s a reason Cuba is known as “fine-smoke Eldorado”. To purchase cigars, take a tour, have a cheeky smoke or relax with a coffee (if you or the person you’re meeting up with isn’t a smoker), check out the following establishments.

  • The Partagas Cigar Factory (our three recommendations are: the Hoyo de Monterrey Petit Robusto, Romeo y Julieta Short Churchill, and the Montecristo Petit Edmundo).
  • The Hostal Conde de Villanueva (the recommended smoke here, according to the Habana experts, is La Gloria Cubana Medal D’or No. 2).
  • La Quinta (arguably Cuba’s top cigar store, it would be hard to go wrong here—just ask the staff what you’re after).

Nutrition Myths You Need To Ignore If You Want To Reach Peak Health
Nutrition Myths You Need To Ignore If You Want To Reach Peak Health

Carbs make you fat. Eating superfoods like chia seeds and avocados automatically improves your health. Keto is the best way to lose fat. Myths, all myths. That’s according to Graeme Tomlinson, the self-proclaimed ‘fitness chef’ who has 5 years of personal training and nutrition coaching under his belt.

In a recent post to his 333,000 Instagram followers, Tomlinson debunked some of the biggest nutrition myths of the last 30 years and some of were quite surprising.

View this post on Instagram

A post shared by 󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿🇬🇧Graeme Tomlinson (@thefitnesschef_) on

Pointing out myth from fact is one thing, but explaining them is another. Tomlinson went into detail with each myth, explaining the intricacies that mainstream beacons of today’s health and fitness may often overlook (Tomlinson calls these “the unregulated plethora of doom that is the nutrition/diet industry” who brush shoulders with charlatans, cherry pickers and outright liars).

Just a bit savage. But here’s what he had to say about each myth.

  • Starvation mode exists and can make you fat – “The belief that starvation reverses the theory of energy balance can instantly be disproven if we consult the Minnesota starvation experiment of 1944. Subjects were confined to aggressively low caloric conditions and significantly reduced body fat.
  • Carbs make you fat – “There is no evidence to suggest carbohydrates directly store fat any more than protein or fat.”
  • Keto is the best way to drop fat – “Fat can only be reduced on the Ketogenic diet if in a state of caloric deficit. The claim that more fat can be burned on Keto may be valid, but this only because high amounts of fat is consumed.”
  • Eating superfoods automatically makes you healthier – “Some foods have more micronutrients than others. But the overall diet and lifestyle determines overall health, not an alleged ‘superfood’.”
  • Eating fast food makes you fat and unhealthy – “Eating fast food is a single event out of a multitude of eating episodes and lifestyle decisions. In isolation, it is merely calorie dense food which can fit a controlled overall diet.”
  • Refined sugar makes you fat, natural sugar doesn’t – “Any form of sugar contains the same calories. Fruit proposes additional benefits in the form of micronutrients and fibre, but these are nutritionally unrelated to sugar.”
  • You must detox your body with a raw diet/juice cleanse – “If one has functioning organs, they rid us of toxins already. The detoxifying effect of a £299 detox cleanse is benign.”
  • Sweeteners gives you type 2 diabetes – “It is impossible for sweeteners to affect insulin or give you type 2 diabetes because the doses consumed contain no calories and no sugar.”
  • Aspartame in soft drinks gives you cancer – “In 2019, after decades of research, there is literally no meta analysis linking aspartame consumption with cancer.”

The take away message from Tomlinson’s analysis is that these myths still exist today because people want them to be true, for whatever reason. Instead the fitness chef recommends working on your impulses when it comes to food whilst ignoring these mythical concepts.
