Bondi Shark Sightings Reveal What Happens When Surfers Try To Reclaim Their Beach

After Bondi was blasted for its laissez-faire response to The Global Pandemic, Australia’s most iconic beach was shut down for most of April. It has now re-opened. However, as incredible new imagery from a local photographer shows, Bondi’s unshuttering comes with a twist.

How? The wildlife, now comfortable in the pastel aquarium that is Bondi without bubble butts, is making more incursions than ever seen before. This particularly applies to Grey Nurse sharks, which Drone Shark App, an Instagram account so cool it entices tourists rather than deterring them, has captured on film.Taking to Instagram on Friday the 1st of May, Drone Shark App posted an IGTV video of five large Grey Nurse sharks, swimming with (and coincidentally, forming a love heart shape out of) a massive school of bait fish. They are then joined by surfers and swimmers.

Drone Shark App also pointed out that his intention is not to create fear (particularly in this case, with Grey Nurse’s being among the friendliest, least-threatening sharks to humans), but rather to educate and normalise.“All I can say is wowsers guys, what a morning: five Normans. The shark naming novelty has been exposed. But let’s keep it going for all our kids so we have to name these guys, remember I want our kids growing up to not fear sharks, not fear the world, love themselves and everything around them,” he captioned the video.

“That’s my mission in life.”

When you hit play, you also hear Drone Shark App’s playful commentary: “Maybe when the swimmers start swimming I might let the lifeguards know there’s a huge bait ball out there with three huge grey nurses in ’em.”

“These surfers are in there now.”

This is not the first time Drone Shark App has spotted some interesting activity in recent weeks. He posted a huge vortex school of salmon yesterday…

Drone Shark App is an Instagram account which began as a way for surfers on Australia’s Eastern beaches (Bondi, Bronte, Tamarama, etc.) to monitor conditions and look for sharks. As you can now see, it has developed into an envy-inducing Instagram account in its own right, followed by everyone from tourists to personal trainers to banker wankers investment specialists to tradies. The common link? FOMO.Lacking the pretension found on some other location-based Instagram accounts, @dronesharkapp captures the Eastern beaches in an authentic way. From surfing with stingrays…

Fitness Coach Reveals Exact Daily Intake Of Protein You Need For Optimum Gains
Fitness Coach Reveals Exact Daily Intake Of Protein You Need For Optimum Gains

You can spend days and hours in the gym in an attempt to pile on muscle, but without a nutritional diet, it will be some time before you start noticing any real progress. Protein, as we all should know, is the main building block for putting on muscle, and you should make sure all your daily meals contain a healthy dosage.

But you may think that more and more protein equals more and more muscle. Well, according to fitness coach James Kew, that isn’t the case at all. In a recent Instagram post, the “online body transformation coach” says our relationship with protein is “logarithmic in nature, meaning you get less and less marginal benefit for each additional gram of protein you eat.”

So downing three protein shakes a day may have little to no benefit if you’ve already had three protein-rich meals. Not to mention, consuming too much protein on a regular basis can have a wealth of other negative effects on your body.

James goes on to provide the recommended daily protein intake based on lean body mass, as opposed to total body mass. Lean body mass is what your body would weigh if you removed all the fat (there are online calculators to help you work out yours). If you work out much protein you should be consuming each day based on total body weight, you’re going to end up with an exaggerated figure.

James, and several users who have commented, say it’s common for people to be told to consume protein based on total body weight. You should forget that entirely and base your intake on lean mass.

The optimum amount of protein you should be consuming will also be affected by whether you’re trying to put yourself in a calorie deficit or a calorie surplus. If you’re in a deficit, you will need to increase the amount of protein you consume, or at least make sure you hit your optimum amount each day, as without it you’ll be at a higher risk of losing muscle. For those in a surplus, you can reduce the amount of daily protein you need.

James provides a graph to show the effect of increasing the daily amount of protein you consume against the amount of muscle you can expect to gain. He points out that this graph is aimed more at leaner individuals who are dieting. Ultimately, he recommends 1g – 1.25g of protein per pound of lean body mass.

So now you know once and for all the amount of protein your body needs to make gains, there’s no excuse for chicken legs.

Qantas Ticket Sales Suggest Domestic Travel Could Return Sooner Than You Think
Qantas Ticket Sales Suggest Domestic Travel Could Return Sooner Than You Think

Qantas and Jetstar have started selling interstate flights from June, leading media to speculate the government will lift domestic travel bans sooner than expected.

Although Qantas and Jetstar have been offering a select number of routes – mainly Sydney to Melbourne – in recent months, as The Mail Online reported yesterday, “they are now advertising flights out of Darwin, as well as more destinations for residents in Perth, following the flattening of the… curve in recent weeks.”

“The increase in services suggests the carriers are preparing for the Federal Government to loosen travel bans across the country which have brought air travel to a halt.”

Jetstar is selling flights from Darwin to all major Australian cities from June the 1st. This observation comes after Darwin authorities decided to return the state to a ‘new normal’.

In Darwin, restaurants, bars, cafes and gyms will reopen over the next five weeks, a decision made on Thursday because, as of then, the Territory had not had a new coronavirus case for 24 days and all but three of its 28 cases had recovered.

However, despite June flights now being available to book, there’s no guarantee they will be able to operate.

For now the NT’s borders are firmly shut, with no plans to reopen.

“It is a business before borders plan, we can do all these things before everyone else because our borders are staying shut,” Chief Minister Michael Gunner said.

“The whole idea is to get our lives back as close to normal as possible without putting you at risk and without putting some of Australia’s most vulnerable at risk.”

How long will the restrictions last? “We are making changes that are sustainable and built to last for as long as we need them.”

In light of this, a Jetstar spokesman told NT News further cancellations are likely as the airline continues to review operations during the health crisis: “The Prime Minister has flagged an extension to international travel restrictions and quarantine for travellers arriving back into Australia.”

Presumably, though, if the laws lift, the June flights will go ahead.

“We will update customers should their flights be impacted.”

Western Australia is in much the same situation, with a similar increase in June flights advertised (and, as DMARGE discovered, with a fair bit of interest in ’em).

Screenshot taken Friday, May the 1st, by DMARGE.

The Mail Online, reported yesterday, “there are no flights from Perth to Sydney or Melbourne throughout May but daily services on sale from June 1.”

Screenshot taken Friday, May the 1st, by DMARGE.

Although – when DMARGE searched the Qantas website today – there appeared to be flights available to book in May too, it’s redundant either way as, until restrictions lift, you’re not allowed to travel for pleasure anyway.

Screenshot taken Friday, May the 1st, by DMARGE.

In the latest news on travel restrictions, the Federal Government said the international ban is expected to remain long-term, but domestic travel is likely to restart sooner depending on the situation in each state.

State and federal leaders will meet mid-May to discuss which measures will be the next in line to be relaxed. Possibilities currently rumoured include a gradual easing (and then compressing if necessary) of domestic travel restrictions, or even, as The Lonely Planet has suggested, a potential ‘travel bubble‘ between Australia and New Zealand.

Chopard Gives The L.U.C Perpetual Twin The Rose Gold Treatment
Chopard Gives The L.U.C Perpetual Twin The Rose Gold Treatment

Despite Baselworld 2020 not taking place this year, watch brands still need to announce the new designs they’ve been working on in lead up to the annual show. For 2020, Chopard has updated its L.U.C Perpetual Twin – the entry-level model into the world of Chopard Haute Horology – relaunching it in two new colours.

Previously, the Perpetual Twin could be had in stainless steel with a silver dial. When it launched in 2016, it became the only chronometer-certified perpetual calendar (QP) available on the market. The Swiss watch manufacturer can now report it is being joined by two new models, one in stainless steel with blue dial and one in 18K rose gold with “subtle grey dial.” Both arrive with respective colour-matching alligator leather straps.

Chopard’s L.U.C series of watches represent some of its finest watchmaking and are assembled at the company’s Geneva and Fleurier workshops. The Perpetual Twin is a clear example of Chopard’s mastery with its 43mm dial playing host to a big date display at 12 o’clock, with three sub-dials: two showing the perpetual calendar day, month and leap year, and a third indicating small seconds at 6 o’clock.

One key difference with this updated version is Chopard has removed the Roman numerals from the previous version and replaced them with faceted rhodium-plated or gilded hour-markers, depending on the model, with matching hour, minute, small-seconds, day and month indicator hands.

Running the Perpetual Twin us Chopard’s L.U.C 96.22-L calibre, which it modestly claims is “a work of true technical and artisanal mastery.” It’s this COSC-certified movement that gives the Perpetual Twin its title of being the only perpetual calendar timepiece available in stainless steel on the market. Intricate components such as a 22-carat gold micro-rotor gifts the entire movement a slim 6mm profile, while Chopard’s own Twin Technology, which utilises dual barrels, keeps the Perpetual Twin running for 65 hours before needing to be rewound.

Chopard’s L.U.C Perpetual Twin will be available soon for AU$36,100 for the stainless steel/blue dial model and $72,800 for the 18K rose gold edition.

Sicily Makes Tourists Post-Pandemic Offer Too Good To Refuse
Sicily Makes Tourists Post-Pandemic Offer Too Good To Refuse

Forget Ibiza’s party popping. Forget Mykonos’ naughty coves. Forget Majorca’s stale sweat and Santorini’s siren call. Why? Sicily, the classiest island in Europe (we’d argue), just launched a purse-clutching incentive for tourists. That’s right: Sicily will pay you to visit. Or, at least, they’ll cover half your flights and a third of your hotel fees. That’s if you visit later this year (if and when international travel is once again encouraged).

According to The Times, the fund will also pay for all your tickets “for museums and archaeological sites.”This comes as the regional government cracks open a €50 million war chest to pay for the scheme after coronavirus robbed it of about €1 billion in tourism revenue in March and April.Talk about a hook. With 13 per cent of GDP coming from tourism, Italy must do something to boost the sector after lockdown ends on May the 4th.To access the offer, vouchers will be made available on the island’s tourism website.

While there’s no set date for Italy to open its borders, it plans to allow restaurants to open for takeaway (a la Australia right now) starting on May the 4th, as well as reopening the manufacturing and construction sectors.“Next week’s easing of its strict lockdown laws will allow movements within regions but will still outlaw interregional travel,” Insider reports.

“Autumn would be the prime time to visit [Sicily], pandemic-pending.”

White sand, volcanic insta-pics and more historical sites than you can throw a Pesto Trapanese at await.

Ultimate Eastern Suburbs ‘Man-Pad’ With Living Room Plunge Pool Goes Up For Sale
Ultimate Eastern Suburbs ‘Man-Pad’ With Living Room Plunge Pool Goes Up For Sale

Aside from amassing a strong collection of watches and owning a couple of super cool cars, any modern gent worth his salt needs a luxury pad to complete the package. Australia just so happens to be home to some quirky, architecturally fascinating homes that are simply out of this world. We’re planning on featuring a whole host of them here at DMARGE and we’re going to start proceedings with this insane home at 1 Greville Street, Clovelly, NSW. Called ‘The Stables’, this four bed, four bath home – which has a combined internal floor area of 560 sqm – was once a horse stable in the 20th century but has since been converted by Henry Crawford, an Australian TV and theatre producer, who also owns a private island resort in Fiji.It seems no expense has been spared in creating The Stables, with exposed roofbeams being the order of the day to create large, airy spaces, which going by the images at least, are drowned in natural light. You can immediately tell Crawford used his Fijian connections as inspiration for the design.A central atrium at the heart of the home comes complete with its very own plunge pool and BBQ area, with three access points. It means you can walk straight out of bed for a morning dip, or enter via the dining room – which can comfortably accommodate an entire NRL team – for an after-dinner cool-down, or even take the party outdoors when beers in the living room start to liven up.The master bedroom, by the way, has an ensuite with a tiled bathtub the likes of which we could spend days on end laying in. And we’re shower people through and through. The prune-like skin would be worth it.On the ground floor is where you will find all the standard features of any opulent mansion: private gym, a billiards room, home cinema and a wine cellar (naturally). Take the stairs up and you’re greeted by the large open-plan living, dining and kitchen area, which leads into three of the four bedrooms – including the master – along with a second reception room.Ben Cohen, the Sydney Sotheby’s International Realty agent looking after the property, expects the home to fetch between A$5.5 – $6 million.Take a look at the video below for a guided tour or head to the listing page for more information and more images.

Czech Police’s Bizarre Request To Nudists Goes Viral

As a middle finger to The Virus currently keeping 62% of the world’s aircraft grounded (and all but one of the world’s recreational travellers at home), a group of Czech nudists recently indulged in a bit of bronzing. As a sign of the times, and in a heartening display of efficiency vs. empathy, when law enforcers came across them, they were not told to cover up their bodies; only their mouths. As CNN Travel reports, “Face masks aren’t mandatory everywhere, but strict rules on wearing them have been enforced in the Czech Republic – even for nudists.”
