Nutrition Coach Reveals Why ‘Alkaline’ Health Foods Are A Massive Hoax

Kale. Avocado. Celery. Cucumber. Lemon. Spinach. Notice a pattern here? No: it’s not just that these foods are all the ingredients for an insipid green juice; they’re all ‘alkaline’.

Alkaline is in inverted commas because, as online nutrition coach and NYT journalist Max Lugavere points out, “This quality is determined by the pH of their ash residue, not the actual acidity of the foods.”

Nonetheless, proponents of the Alkaline Diet believe these foods, once digested, bring your body’s pH back down to a more basic position on the acidity scale, thus improving your health.

This is why they eat such foods as fruits, nuts, legumes and vegetables, which are ‘alkaline’, and moderate their consumption of meat, poultry, fish, dairy, eggs, grains and alcohol, which are more ‘acidic’.

But… While it is true that the body’s natural pH level should be slightly alkaline (between 7.35 and 7.45), medical websites like Healthline say there is no solid evidence that “replacing acid-forming foods with alkaline foods can improve health.”

Max Lugavere is stronger in his criticism, explaining how—while it’s true that the foods you eat leave an “ash” residue known as metabolic waste—it doesn’t matter whether this residue is alkaline or acidic because it has to pass through your stomach—a highly acidic zone with a pH of 3.5—before it breaks down and nutrition is extracted.

Which is why changing the pH of what you eat can change the pH levels of your urine (the byproduct of metabolic waste) but can’t change the pH of your blood—or why, as Max Lugavere points out, if there was then you wouldn’t want to eat it.

“There is no food anywhere that will change your blood pH to any significant degree. If there was, it’d probably kill you.”

To read the full rant, check out the Instagram post below. And remember: Max isn’t saying “Alkaline” foods like fruits, nuts, veggies and legumes are unhealthy—he’s saying the reason they are healthy has nothing to do with the pH of the metabolic waste they produce.

Here’s the deal. “Alkaline” Foods (in quotes because this quality is determined by the pH of their ash residue, not the actual acidity of the foods) are healthy foods. They include fruit or veggies. They improve your health but not because they’re alkaline. Similarly, acidic foods do not harm your health, by virtue of being acidic. In fact acidic foods can also be just as healthy (hello wild salmon ). . Your blood is slightly alkaline, with a pH between 7.35 and 7.45. Your stomach is very acidic, with a pH of 3.5 or below, so it can break down food and extract important nutrition. And your urine changes, depending on what you eat, that’s how your body keeps the level in your blood steady. . There is no food anywhere that will change your blood pH to any significant degree. If there was, it’d probably kill you. . And yes, alkaline water is BS too. . Any questions? Love you guys. . I Tried To Get A Chris Hemsworth Haircut & Now I Deeply Regret It
I Tried To Get A Chris Hemsworth Haircut & Now I Deeply Regret It

Hairstyles come and go. In the 90’s we had Rage Against The Machine ‘headbangers’ and David Beckham‘s floppy locks. In the 2000’s we had the faux-hawk and short back and sides’. Since 2010 we’ve had ‘fades’ and top knots.

But this year one haircut has been revived: the curtain. Essentially a short back and sides (blended into a medium length fringe, parted down the middle), the curtain has been slammed from every angle (see Marie Claire and Esquire’s salty takedowns).

However, it only takes a brief scroll of Tinder (or opening your eyes on your next commute) to see every ‘cool’ cut of recent years is now as oversaturated as a forgetful hipster’s Matcha—looking ‘on point’ is no longer enough for a man to differentiate himself.

Hence the come-back of formerly ruinous styles.

At least that’s what I told myself, as I browsed through the photos of celebrities like Chris Hemsworth…

Who all (at one point or another) have rocked the ‘curtain’ look so well, it makes you think you can do it too.

Fast forward two hours and, with only a small amount of feet shuffling, I handed over my phone to my barber, complete with a Chris Hemsworth screenshot.

Unlike my girlfriend, his professionalism prevented him from bursting out laughing. However, I sensed a raised eyebrow behind his lilted, “Sure mate.”

He then pinned up the fringe of my shoulder-length hair, and began lopping everything else off. You’d think at this point, as months of hard work (and bad hair days) fell to the floor around me, I would have known I had made a terrible mistake.

But there’s something about a professional’s hands on your scalp that gives you a false sense of confidence.

He then cut out at an angle, leaving two triangular fringes on either side of my face, more or less blended in at the back and sides. And to be honest, at this point—apart from looking weirdly retro—it didn’t look too bad.

But in my eternal wisdom, feeling as though ‘less is not always more’, I decided to really get my money’s worth, and asked him to cut it even shorter around the back and sides. “He’s a professional,” I thought. “What could go wrong,” I thought.

As the “wilted mushroom” look I’m currently trying to bring back into style suggests; quite a lot…

Moral of the story? If you want this hairstyle to look natural, don’t go too short on the back and sides (or just trust your barber’s judgement).

Sydney Airport Introduces ‘Beauty Cabin’ For Dishevelled Travellers
Sydney Airport Introduces ‘Beauty Cabin’ For Dishevelled Travellers

We’ve all stepped off a long haul flight feeling like death (and smelling worse). But most people at least make the effort to look presentable before the flight starts. An upgrade could be at stake, after all. Plus: it’s hardly fair to your seatmates to turn up looking like you just left a warehouse rave.

However, if you are one of those devil-may-care slobs who think ‘dishevelled chic’ is a thing, Sydney Airport has news for you. Whether you consider it a pointed hint or a welcome chance to look schmick for once is up to you, but a lush, free new ‘beauty cabin’ now awaits travellers in Sydney’s International Departures Terminal.

As reported by News.com.au, “To adapt with the growing demand of lifestyle experiences at other overseas terminals, Sydney Airport has launched a world-first initiative at their international wing.”

“For the next six months until September, passengers departing Sydney can now treat themselves to a massage, an eye-rejuvenation treatment or even a make-up application before they board their flight,” the News.com.au report continues.

“The best part? Most of the treatments won’t cost you a cent.”

This handy pre-flight experience comes courtesy of The La Prairie Art of Luxury beauty cabin at the HEINEMANN Tax & Duty Free complex, and is designed to give you a taste of luxury (and also to hydrate) before flying at 35,000 feet.

How does it all work? Well, you can either select a “luxury treatment” in a private suite (which has to be booked in advance) or an “express service” that can be performed on the counter for free.

Of the free services, we’d recommend the following:

  • Instant eye-revive treatment that News.com.au says will, “Smooth, hydrate and brighten your entire eye area in just 10 minutes.”
  • Squeezing a bit of their Skin Caviar collection free samples onto your fingers, to get that baby soft feel to your hands.

Of the paid for services, it’s hard to go past a twenty-minute, deep-cleaning facial, or if your flight has been delayed and you’re looking to go all out, why not add a specialised treatment to protect your skin from “cabin air,” followed by a 10-minute personal consultation?

Dishevelled or not: that’s a damn attractive offer.

Everything You Need To Know About Apple’s New iPhone
Everything You Need To Know About Apple’s New iPhone

Apple has a reputation for focussing on looks over performance, but—to the dismay of people who like to take photos of their phones and the joy of people who like to take photos with their phones—reports indicate that the upcoming iPhone 11 will have a powerful new camera bulging out of its top left-hand corner.

That plus a heap more upgrades. Let’s dive right in.

Triple Lens Front Camera

According to leaks by Silicon Valley’s version of Julian Assange, Steve H. McFly, (whose claims were recently bolstered by reports from the Wall St Journal and Bloomberg), Apple’s new iPhone will feature three rear-mounted cameras, a la the current Samsung Galaxy S10.

This is a step up from the two rear cameras Apple’s iPhone XS and iPhone XS Max currently posses, which have one standard lens and one telephoto lens for zooming.

However, if you are thinking of buying one of the new lower range iPhones you may not benefit from this, as Bloomberg and The Wall Street Journal reports suggest this feature will be reserved for Apple’s top model only.

Improved FaceID (& Selfie Camera)

For those that love a cheeky selfie, never fear: Apple’s front-facing camera is reportedly getting more than a facelift. According to tech website 9to5Mac, the new iPhone’s selfie camera will have a 12-megapixel capacity, a fair increase from the 7-megapixel cameras on the iPhones in Apple’s current range. This will, in turn, help Apple improve its facial recognition system, Bloomberg predicts.

Better Charging Capabilities

Business Insider reports, “Apple’s trio of new smartphones are also rumoured to feature reverse wireless charging for the first time.” For those that don’t like tangles: here’s hoping. Oh and the batteries themselves are, according to 9to5Mac, going to be up to 25% larger and thus capable of greater battery life.

New & Improved Processors

Business Insider today wrote that the new iPhones, “Will likely run on new and improved Apple processors that offer better performance.” Given that this happens every time Apple release a new iPhone, we’d hardly be going out on a limb to agree. That said, one Senior Technology Reviewer over at Forbes yesterday hinted that this year’s upgrades will be minor compared to what’s in store for 2020…

Sydney Pub Forgets It’s 2019; Bans ‘Stylish Menswear’ From The Premises

A stylish bum bag (fanny pack, for those across the pond) has been the irreverent accessory of choice for male style icons since at least 2018. From Coachella to the Milan Runway, everyone from Dwayne Wade to Jared Leto has worked together to bring the most convenient fashion accessory back from the sartorial grave that American tourists put it in.

But now, along with Nike TN’s (another fashion accessory once associated with dingy bus shelters and tracksuit pants, but now making a resurgence), high-vis ‘tradie wear’ and work boots (need we remind you these are what all the cool kids are wearing in winter), one Sydney pub has—in one fell swoop—banned the traditional garb of much of its male customers, from workmen to hipsters.

As the Radio show 2GB earlier this week reported, “The Marsden Brewhouse’s house policy outlines staff have the right to refuse entry to people wearing specific Nike shoes, male satchels or bumbags, and ‘offensive clothing.'”

“They have also banned all ‘tradie wear’, including work boots and Hi-Vis clothing, after 6pm.”

The owner of the pub in Sydney’s North West, Arthur Laundy, denied the controversial dress code, telling Radio 2GB that he never approved the policy and didn’t know where it came from: “The moment I found out about it was this morning and it was pulled down immediately.”

“Nobody seems to know who put it up there.”
