What You Need To Know Before Buying Property In Australia
What You Need To Know Before Buying Property In Australia

Buying Property In Sydney

Resident money expert Luke Laretive recently sat down with property specialist Julian Muldoon of Property Way to discuss everything a man needs to know about buying property in Sydney, Melbourne and major Australian capital cities without going broke.

Here’s the crucial advice you need before dropping large on a deposit that could make or break your future.

Luke Laretive: Is it a good time to buy now?

Julian Muldoon: A better question is, is it a good time for you to buy? It’s always a good time to buy somewhere, so keep your options open to all capital cities gives you the best chance to succeed.  Just don’t follow the herd!

LL: What is the first step in finding an investment property?

JM: Understanding your capacity, not only to borrow, but also to fund the monthly repayments now and into the future. Once this is taken care of, sitting in a controlled environment to put a plan in place of what you are trying to achieve, before getting online or attending auctions.

It’s one of the largest investment decisions most people make, yet many research their new car more than their real estate purchase.  It’s so important to understand the game before you decide to play.

“Many investors get caught up in the hype and hysteria that can surround an area.”

LL: How can I locate the next ‘boom’ area?

JM: Many investors get caught up in the hype and hysteria that can surround an area. Remember, its either on the radar because of growth that has already taken place, or speculation of what’s to come, which may not materialise. Be careful, many property investment ‘gurus’ will say they have the secret formula for picking the next hot spot.

The best way to succeed in my experience, is to apply the basic principles of a sound property investment.  I’ll always be focusing on a mix of factors for clients – land size, location, demographic demands, quality of dwelling, school zones, infrastructure investment and the price, just to name a few.

Stay clear of areas that lack a diversified economy or properties that only have one re-sale market and prospective tenant.

LL: Is it possible to pick the property market cycles?

JM: Many think they can, but let’s be honest with so many voices and opinions out there someone is going to get it right and many more will get it wrong.

We do know that property markets need strong job growth and a competitive market place to grow. So, look for areas with a strong economy, limited houses for sale and rent, low supply and a growing population.

LL: Any suggestions for bidding at auction?

JM: Have a plan. Stick to your plan. Too many pay more than they should at auctions and for good reason, that’s what they are supposed to do, encourage emotional buying, and they work. Run your numbers, know what you can afford and know the value of the property.

James Bond's 'Skyfall' Yacht Can Now Be Yours For A Bargain
James Bond's 'Skyfall' Yacht Can Now Be Yours For A Bargain

Money is no object in James Bond’s world. Living proof of that is the grand sailing yacht featured in the 2012 film Skyfall which just went on the market for a cool US$9.3 million.

That’s a decent amount of coin for a 55 metre superyacht but bear in mind this is the boat in which Daniel Craig and Bond girl Bérénice Marlohe shared a scene with (right before they killed her – oops spoiler).

The stunning craft features teak decks which extend from the tip of the bow through to the stern. Walk along the deck and you’ll be greeted with a 12-seater table complete with flat bed sun lounges and a wet bar accompanied by a massive 3D television. Because Bond loves TV.

This is the second time that ‘Regina’ has hit the market with its first sale happening back in 2012 for a stonking US$14 million. Since then it has received some minor upgrades which raises the top speed to 12 knots.

Inside the cabin punters will find lashings of luxurious mahogany, marble and onyx. ‘Regina’ isn’t just for one couple to indulge in though. It can accommodate up to twelve in its six cabins with each room coming with satellite TV and premium audio systems.

And jet skis. Never forget the jet skis.

Those interested can now register at Engel & Völkers Yachting.

Can’t afford Bond’s boat? Steal his style for free.

Swiss Watch Brand CEO Reveals The Country Set To Drive The Future Of Watchmaking
Swiss Watch Brand CEO Reveals The Country Set To Drive The Future Of Watchmaking

Ulysse Nardin has weathered some of the biggest storms at sea in its illustrious 170 year history of timekeeping.

Beyond the sails as a luxury watchmaker, Ulysse Nardin’s CEO Patrik Hoffmann says that they will be looking to weather a different kind of storm in the form of a rapidly evolving watch industry today.

“The goal was to pack a timepiece with as many complications as you could. Whether this was a benefit to the end consumer or not, I think this is over.”

“I think things changed over the last ten years,” he explains to us from this year’s SIHH in Geneva.

“The industry changed in the way that the product changed and the demand changed.”

Hoffmann is speaking of the notable shift from the pre-GFC days of 2008 which saw just about every watchmaker cramming in as many complications into one timepiece as possible.

It was a self-indulgent strategy which would see its demise in just a few short years and more importantly, change the way traditional watchmaking was approached today to sustain its future.

“The goal was to pack a timepiece with as many complications as you could. Whether this was a benefit to the end consumer or not…I think this is over. I think the word we use now is ‘true value’ and the consumer today is looking for just that.”

Hoffmann is proud to boast that Ulysse Nardin never went down that route and stayed true to its intentions of providing an underlying value that consumers always expected. A significant part of this is the brand’s pricing strategy which has always remained “fair” in the CEO’s opinion.

“We tried not to come up with very complicated timepieces just for the sake of the complication.”

So what is a worthy challenge to Ulysse Nardin in his opinion? The fine art of minimalism. Instead of jumping on the complication bandwagon, Hoffmann is much more content these days telling his master watchmaker to design a timepiece  that traditionally requires 300 parts with just 100 parts.

“That’s the challenge he would take. It matches today’s watch industry’s shift towards true values.”

With advancing technology and smartwatches making their presence felt in the past few years, Hoffmann assures us that he is not worried but simply weary.

No doubt keeping an eye on the movement is crucial from a business perspective but Hoffman says that there’s absolutely no plans to take Ulysse Nardin in that direction.

“We have our key fundamentals somewhere else. The manufacturer is very deeply rooted in Ulysse Nardin today.”

“Innovation was always key for us and that’s why we shy away from marketing stunts.”

One marketing stunt (if you can really call it that) that Hoffmann isn’t shying away from is of course the brand’s rich heritage of sailing the open seas in both competition and exploration guise.

In the case of the brand, the anchor moniker is very deep, so much so that it even forms part of the watchmaker’s logo.

Hoffmann points to the Ulysse Nardin booth as an example of the brand’s approach to subtle marketing.

“It’s modelled off a piece of history which is a deck chronometer which was crucial in navigating the sea. Our communication is based on the sea. The waves are the eternal movement and that’s our connection with it.”

“The sea isn’t a marketing tool. The sea is our area and it’s what we’ve owned since producing the deck chronometers to navigate the seas 100 years ago.”

Given the immense sense of pride in history and oceanic heritage of the Ulysse Nardin name, Hoffmann does reveal an intriguing trend amongst today’s watch buyer.

They’re getting younger. This continual innovation that Hoffmann spruiks seems to have played into the hands of a newer kind of buyer who appreciates the more sport chic appeal of their newer watches.

“China is the engine or will be the engine in the next 10 or 20 years.”

Speaking of new customers, one can’t speak of luxury goods these days without mentioning the giant elephant in the room – the new world purveyor of luxury goods known as China.

“We have been in business of watchmaking for 170 years so we always have to think long term. China is the engine or will be the engine in the next 10 or 20 years. I see the pendulum shifting towards Asia and China regions. It’s very clear.”

That’s not to say that Ulysse Nardin won’t be focusing their design influence towards other regions. Currently the brand’s biggest markets include the USA, former Soviet Unions (FSU), Europe and of course, China.

Regardless of the shifting market Ulysse Nardin is confident that they’re navigating towards the right direction both in their approach to traditional watchmaking and future watch trends.

Hoffmann explains that there will always be a touch of the old fashioned in the watch industry which coincides with today’s modern watchmaking advancements.

“In the case where we use silicon for the anchor escapement, we have employed a modern high-tech material which still requires a watchmaker to sit behind the bench and do the work the old fashioned way.”

In the next five years Hoffmann says that the brand will continue to work on a range of innovative movements that should the attention of the market. The brand’s 175th anniversary will arrive in 2021 and they’ve already planned a few surprises lined up for the grand occasion via a project Hoffmann calls “The Road Map 2020.

As for the little Australian market? Hoffmann smiles and highlights the fact that our country is surrounded by sea.

“I think Ulysse Nardin will have a good future out there. Australia’s a young crowd. It’s a dynamic market and we have to make use of that.”

We’re taking that as the Captain’s orders.

Step Inside Belgium's Finest Bachelor Pad For The Classic Car Lover
Step Inside Belgium's Finest Bachelor Pad For The Classic Car Lover

Belgium gave the world fine chocolate and Jean Claude Van Damme. Today you can add another one to the list in the form of the world’s ultimate bachelor pad.

Govaert & Vanhoutte Architects designed this minimalist house in Ghent which comes complete with built-in cigar cabinets, a car elevator for your prized collection, a rooftop jacuzzi and wait for it, a private club in the basement which is also joined with a subterranean view of the pool out back.

The attention to detail on this residence is extravagant to say the least. The lawn itself is cut to align with the flow of the Leie river, offset only by the floating concrete roof and floor to ceiling glass.

The owner of the house is actually a luxury car dealer hence the need to store priceless examples of motoring inside the home.

“He has a particular lifestyle for his line of work, which involves organising events and parties for friends, but also for some exclusive clients,” lead architect Benny Govaert told Wallpaper.

“He wanted a house that allowed him to organise all this at home, with the possibility of putting certain exclusive cars on display”.

For those who want to seek out a bit of intimacy, the underground club is the perfect spot featuring a decked out bar, lounge area, extensive wine cabinet and a DJ booth so that Paris Hilton can come play at your party.

Building the home wasn’t a straight forward affair for the crew behind it. An entire cube of concrete and glass needed to stack correctly whilst an overhanging concrete canopy marks it as a truly one-of-a-kind design.

Surry Hills Date Spots Guaranteed To Score You A Home Run
Surry Hills Date Spots Guaranteed To Score You A Home Run

There you are standing at the doorway dressed to impress. Perfectly coiffed hair – check. Cologne – check. Fresh underwear – check and check. And then it dawns on you as your date opens the front door…you have no idea where you’re taking them because you have the multitasking ability of a tumble weed.

Sexy times over? Not quite. Just as we explored the best places in Bondi to take a date, today we’re hitting up the trendy parts of town guaranteed to impress.

Welcome to the best date spots in Surry Hills.

Eat

It’s not always about the chit-chat. Every man and his confidant needs a decent feed and you can do so whilst waxing lyrical at these proven hot spots for freshly minted lovers.

Nomad

nomad

One of the long standing jewels of Surry Hills is Nomad, a lively restaurant (but not raucous) which plays perfectly into the local dating scene with exceptional food and wine come together. Their selection of fine Australian produce makes for superb dishes with a slight Middle Eastern twist which should be more than enough to impress your date.

16 Foster St, Surry Hills

The Winery

winery

The locals love it for its Friday night ambience and alfresco style drinks and dining but head upstairs and you could be enjoying a nice tipple and an intimate conversation with your future significant other. Bookings are essential at this popular establishment so do call ahead and head in during the week. If not, the open garden courtyard away from the bustle of the bar area shall also suffice. Rain? That’ll give you more reason to be a hero.

285A Crown St, Surry Hills

Porteno

porteno

The iconic Argentinian restaurant which earned its stars on Cleveland Street has now moved to the other end of Surry Hills on Holt Street but the South American inspired grub and cocktails are still a winning combo in anyone’s books. The new place (which isn’t pictured) is a lot sleeker and features a lot more natural lighting. Perfect for counting freckles on your date’s face. As always, book ahead and go in during the week for a quieter affair.

50 Holt St, Surry Hills

Dolphin Hotel

dolphin

The love child of Bondi Icebergs has been doing a solid trade since it opened last year and a lot of that has to do with the selection of gourmet Italian dishes paired with an extensive drinks list overlooked by Maurice Terzini. It can get ridiculously busy towards the end of week so for date duties head in during the week or ask to be seated outside at the intimate little courtyard.

412 Crown St, Surry Hills

Drink

When it needs to be a quick date make it one of the best places for a sneaky tipple before embarking on the night’s other proceedings. Here are the best date places for the romantic drinker.

Tokyo Bird

tokyo

The secret’s out and you can forget about having a intimate drink with a date if you plan on swinging by this hugely popular establishment on a Friday or Saturday night. It’s no doubt cosy and the perfect setting for a get together with a flame, but it’s best recommended you take them on Monday or during the week when not every man, woman and child midget is after the finest Japanese whisky, cocktails and beer this city has to offer. If during the week is not an option, go an hour before closing time on Friday or Saturday and it should be quiet enough for you to stare into each other’s eyes over some Suntory beverages.

Commonwealth St & Belmore Lane, Surry Hills

Golden Age Cinema & Bar

goldenage

Looking to score that home run? Look no further than Golden Age Cinema & Bar located in the old screening room of the heritage-listed Paramount Pictures Building in Surry Hills. Besides the films on rotation which covers classics, cults, creepies, cheapies and the best new film releases six days a week, there’s also an intimate bar which opens before a film screening and stays open late into the night during the movie. That means you can spend all the time you need getting to know pretty eyes even if you choose not to see a film.

80 Commonwealth St, Surry Hills

Bar Baretto

baretto

We lied. Bar Baretto also does food of the Italian persuasion to go with its wine service and is an intimate spot filled with comfortable lounge seats and quirky pendant lights. It’s hard to spot from the outside and that’s part of the charm. Private dining rooms are also on hand if you’re a shy guy.

544 Bourke St, Surry Hills

Bar Ume

ume

Small, casual and quaint defines the tight confines of Bar Ume, a Japanese-inspired drinking hole which also happens to boast elegant bar food with fine dining roots. Patrons can head to the back area for a quieter experience or just drink away the awkward silence with a solid sake menu. Again, it’s recommended to avoid this place as a date spot towards the end of the week.

Celebrities Who Rejected Famous Roles
Celebrities Who Rejected Famous Roles

The wave of workplace dreariness is likely clawing away at your sanity right now. Worry not men, we’ve got you like Jack had Rose. Only we won’t pike out and prematurely die from a bit of frostbite (because we’re website). Here are this week’s five most interesting facts for men.

Celebrities Who Rejected Famous Roles

boogie

You’ve heard of the stories of poor celebrities before they were famous but how about those who were given the chance to break into Hollywood…and then rejected it? Yep. These are those guys.

[via Hollywood]

Matt Damon: Rejected the lead role of Avatar which was eventually snapped up by Aussie Sam Worthington
Christopher Walken: Lucas wanted Walken as Han Solo first but after he passed on the idea Harrison Ford was called in to fill the now iconic role.
John Travolta: As…wait for it. Forrest Gump. He opted for Pulp Fiction instead and the rest between him and Tom Hanks are history.
Leonardo DiCaprio: Boogie Nights made Mark Wahlberg (and his massive schlong) famous. Leo loved the role of pornstar Dirk Diggler but eventually gave it up to Marky Mark who went on to become a household name without needing to whip it out ever again.
Will Smith: During the time of production of The Matrix, Smith had free reigns off the back of his blockbuster success with Independence Day and Men In Black. The role of Neo was one of his options but he opted for Wild Wild West instead. Whoa.
Sean Connery: You shalt not pass…unless it’s stirred, not shaken. That’s right, Ian McKellen was second only to Sean Connery when Peter Jackson offered him the role of Gandalf. Connery declined as he “didn’t understand the script”. Ouch.

Eight Billionaires As Rich As Half Of The World’s Poorest

zucks

Let’s look at the figures. Just 8 people in this world now hold the collective wealth of 3.6 billion of the world’s poorest, according to Oxfam and the BBC. The study which doesn’t come without some critics is said to have come from Credit Suisse data which shows the widening gap between the rich and poor.

The world’s eight richest individuals have as much wealth as the 3.6bn people who make up the poorest half of the world, according to Oxfam. Who are these eight money hoggers of our modern times?

1. Bill Gates (US): co-founder of Microsoft (net worth $75bn)

2. Amancio Ortega (Spain): founder of Zara owner Inditex (net worth $67bn)

3. Warren Buffett (US): largest shareholder in Berkshire Hathaway (net worth $60.8bn)

4. Carlos Slim Helu (Mexico): owner of Grupo Carso (net worth $50bn)

5. Jeff Bezos (US): founder and chief executive of Amazon (net worth $45.2bn)

6. Mark Zuckerberg (US): co-founder and chief executive of Facebook (net worth $44.6bn)

7. Larry Ellison (US): co-founder and chief executive of Oracle (net worth $43.6bn)

8. Michael Bloomberg (US): owner of Bloomberg LP (net worth $40bn)

Tech Companies That Celebs Are Investing In

kevinspacey

Talking about money, some celebrities have also been banking their cash on tech rather than drugs and booze. We call these people side hustlers and these are the companies the famous faces have thrown their support behind.

Jared Leto: Frame.io, Nom, Headspace, Blue Bottle Coffee, Zenefits, PlateJoy, Life On Air Inc., Reserve, Reddit, Superpedestrian, Radius, Robinhood, Surf Air, Gobbler
Justin Bieber: Shots Studios, Stamped
Tony Hawk: Blue Bottle Coffee
Arnold Schwarzenegger: Google
Kevin Spacey: Madefire, Frame.io, Wonder
Drake: Madefire
Justin Timberlake: Stipple, Miso Media
Jimmy Fallon: Turntable.fm

Masturbation Could Boost Workplace Productivity

jen

Spanking the monkey in the workplace may soon be common practice for those who want to increase productivity. The Metro hit up a few experts about whether or not this is true and they all agreed on one thing – on a psychological level, it has some benefits.

Senior lecturer in psychology at Nottingham Trent University, Mark Sergeant, told the paper that a masturbation break would be “very effective at work,” whilst proving as a “great way to relieve tension and stress.”

Cliff Arnall who is a psychologist and life coach compounded the statement saying that “masturbation policies” would enhance focus, lessen aggression and add productivity all the while invoking “more smiling”. The secret, these experts say, is the release of endorphins which helps reduce stress.

Time to turn that HR nightmare into bedroom fantasy. Oooo’rite.

Crazy Historic Facts About Japan

7a-tsujigiri

Think the land of the rising sun is crazy now? Think again. These are some of Japan’s craziest historic facts thanks to Listverse.
  • Eating meat in Japan used to be illegal due to Buddhist beliefs. The ban was officially lifted in 1872
  • Japanese soldiers cut off ears and noses as war trophies. Between 1592 and 1598, Japan conducted atrocious acts against other countries including Korea. They took the heads of enemies as trophies but soon found it too cumbersome to take home so instead cut off ears and noses. They proudly displayed these body parts in ear tombs and nose tombs which contained anywhere up to 20,000 noses.
  • Samurai Tested Swords By Attacking Random Passersby. During medieval Japan it was considered dishonourable if a Samurai’s sword couldn’t slice through an opponent’s body in one deadly stroke. Samurai at one point tested this on criminals and corpses but there was an instance called tsujigiri (“crossroads killing”) where rogue samurai would test it on random strangers walking the streets at night.

Last day…

AUDEMARS PIGUET

Audemars Piguet Royal Oak Perpetual Calendar

dsc_9941Following the trend of all black watches, AP have released the Audemars Piguet Royal Oak Perpetual Calendar. It’s all ceramic construction means it weighs almost nothing (yes, we tried it on). Requiring over 600 hours to develop and perfect, the AP RO Ceramic is truely a remarkable timepiece.

CARTIER

This year Cartier have focused more on women’s jewellery and watches rather than men’s, however two new references of the Drive De Cartier were released.

Drive De Cartier Extra Flat

dsc_9856The Drive D Cartier is in our top five watch releases of SIHH 2017. It’s already elegant design has been streamlined that little bit more, with its width now only 7mm. The Drive De Cartier Extra Flat comes in pink and white gold, with the white gold edition really getting our attention with the grey crocodile strap. Superb.

Cartier Drive de Cartier Moon Phases

dsc_9932If you’re partial to moon phase watches then you’ll appreciate the next evolution of the Drive De Cartier. This model comes in pink gold and a more affordable steel version. The moon phases gives the watch a touch more character and makes for a more interesting dial.

Let the games continue…

PANERAI

This year’s fair has been somewhat void of ‘wow factor’ pieces. That was until we dropped into Panerai. Three standout pieces, all Luminors, an Amercia’s Cup edition, new Submersibles and something epic (and carbon) with a 50 year warranty.

Luminor 1950 Team Oracle USA 3 Days Chrono Flyback Automatic PAM00725

panerai-sihh2017
Luminor 1950 Team Oracle USA 3 Days Chorno Flyback Automatic

Panerai have pulled off a major upset and secured the defending champions, Team Oracle USA as well as Team Softbank Japan, as watch partners for the upcoming America’s Cup in Bermuda. Whilst the collection offers five variations, the Luminor 1950 Team Oracle USA 3 Days Chrono Flyback Automatic is the standout. Set in a 44mm ceramic case with black dial and white, red and blue indicators, it’s the ultimate watch for the sailing enthusiast. It features Panerai’s P.9000 movement with the flyback function to allow the user to set a countdown of up to 15 minutes.

Luminor Submersible 1950 3 Days Automatic PAM00684

panerai-sihh2017-4
Luminor Submersible 1950 3 Days Automatic

Hands down my favourite watch of SIHH 2017 is the Luminor Submersible 1950 3 Days which combines red gold and ceramic in a smaller 42mm case. This watch just screams refinement and baller cool. Few will be able to afford this 250 piece limited edition, but it’s a Panerai which will no doubt become an icon.

panerai-sihh2017-5
Luminor Submersible 1950 3 Days Automatic

It’s water resistant to 30 meters, so even with its fanciness it’s still a certified professional dive watch. Expect to pay about AU$33,000 for this one when it arrives down under.

Luminor Lab-ID Carbotech 3 Days PAM00700

dsc_9541
Luminor Lab-ID Carbotech 3 Days

If you want a watch that weighs almost nothing and will likely outlive you, then the Panerai Luminor Lab-ID Carbotech 3 Days is the watch you want. Set in a massive 49mm case, this beast is made from machined carbon fibre so each watch has completely its own unique finish.  The blue luminescent numbers light up like a Christmas tree when exposed to darkness. Panerai have also designed the movement to require zero lubrication. Because of this engineering feat, they are offering a whopping 50 year warranty with it. Yes – 50 years!

GIRARD-PERREGAUX

I’m somewhat of a virgin to the Girard Perregaux brand and this year’s fair has been my first closeup at this 225 year old business. What’s most interesting for us is their focus on just one family of watches, the Laureato.

Laureato

dsc_9291
Laureato’s blue steel face

The Laureato is contemporary and sleek line that we think will do well. The range does take some visual cues from other watches in the market, but regardless this does feel like its own self.

The Laureato will come in four materials: stainless, pink gold, white gold and titanium. It will also offer four sizes in 34mm, 42mm, 44mm and 45mm cases. Two movements will be available, both automatic with an additional quartz movement for the ladies.

dsc_9296
Laureato’s intricate dial design

Finally there will be bracelets and leather straps with an optional rubber strap for the leather versions.

The version above will have an RRP of about AU$16,000.

WW.TC

Girard-Perregaux WW.TC

Girard-Perregaux WW.TC Up Close

Something more refined and suitable for the global traveller is the Girard-Perregaux WW.TC. This cool 40mm world timer features two time zones with cities marked around the bezel. Featuring GP’s unique dual crown system, the left hand crowd alters the timezones, while the right sets the time. The WW.TC comes in stainless steel and rose gold, on both bracelet and alligator straps.

Day two…we’re still alive.

ULYSSE NARDIN

dsc_8807New for SIHH this year is the representation of Swiss brand, Ulysse Nardin. We had previously caught up with their CEO Patrick Hoffman (read his interview here) and today we inspected the novelties for the brand.

Marine Regatta Flyback

ulysse-sihh2017
Marine Regatta Flyback

This beast has been inspired by yacht racing and features an incredible unique count down movement. The wearer can set the timer between 1 and 10 minutes, the second then hand rotates anti clockwise as it counts down. Very cool.

Marine Tourbillon

ulysse-tb-sihh2017If you’re in the market for an affordable tourbillon with a distinct ocean racing feel, then the Ulysse Nardin Marine Tourbillon may be for you. Set in a brilliant white face, the timepieces really commands attention on your wrist. At roughly $40,000 it’s one of the most affordable tourbillon’s on the market.

BAUME & MERCIER

b26e26e6-26ad-46f4-b686-cd69017eee30-jpgThis year Baume & Mercier continue to drive the partnership with Shelby Cobra, they’ve revamped the extremly affordable Classima range have have a new project titled the ‘Capeland Club’ which we think it’s a really cool new direction for the brand.

CLIFTON CLUB

baume-sihh2017-2New this year we see Baume & Mercier release a more sporty watch that’s designed for work and play. Suitable for the guy who doesn’t have the means for many watches, rather one quality watch, one that he can wear for weekend sport and which will make a transition to his office wardrobe without fuss.

The Clifton Club range comes in a 42mm case and measure only 10.2mm in thickness. This means it will fit easily under your shirt cuffs for work. This is a deliverable design feature to cater for the man who CBF changing his watch. Under the hood is the Clifton Club 10340 Automatic movement.

RRP of the Clifton Club will range from 1,880 CHF to 2,000 CHF

SHELBY DAYTONA

baume-sihh2017This year Baume & Mercier design director Alexandre Peraldi and Peter Brock (original designer of the Daytona) teamed up to extend the Shelby partnership with the Shelby Cobra Daytona Edition of the watch. Limited to just 1964 pieces it’s similar to its predecessor but draws inspiration from one hell of an automobile.

The Clifton Club Shelby Cobra is housed in a 44mm case with flyback chronograph, tachometer and date functions.

IWC

Possibly the biggest most celebrity driven brand of SIHH and the Richemont group is of course IWC. Today we took a look at their new pieces for 2017. A big focus for the brand this year is women’s but there were still a few cool novelties for the men.

The biggest news is the relaunch of the Da Vinci range, which is now round, rather than the original square shape.

DA VINCI LAUREUS EDITION REF#IW393402

iwc-sihh2017
The caseback is engraved with the competition winning drawing from a 12 year old boy

IWC have long been in partnership with the Laureus Sports Awards and this year sees a limited edition Da Vinci featuring the striking blue dial. Set in a 42mm stainless steel case and featuring the 89361 calibre movement with mechanic chromo with flyback function, it’s really a standout from the collection.
Feature characteristics for Laureus are its blue design with a caseback engraved with the competition winning drawing from a 12 year old boy in Taiwan.

It’s limited to 1500 pieces and proceeds go to funding projects for Laureus.

Da Vinci Perpetual Calendar Chronograph

dsc_9460This beast combines both calendar and chronograph functions and is the first model in IWC’s history to wear both at 12 o’clock position. The Da Vinci Perpetual Chronograph features the Calibre 89630 – a new movement specifically made for this watch.

dsc_9463It’s so damn smart that it takes into consideration the complexities of leap years. Even I can’t do that and I’m 37 years old. The timepiece boasts a 68 hour power reserve, comes in a 43mm stainless steel case and sapphire glass back so you can see all the intricate inner workings.

It’s available in stainless steel (32,000 CHF) and red gold (43,000 CHF).

Looks like it’s the Antiplano which is being updated in celebration of its 60th anniversary.

Antiplano Colour Dial Date

piaget-sihh2017-2Piaget have pulled out a little surprise package with the colour dial range of the Antiplano colour dial range.

What’s surprising is the size of the models at 43mm (in white gold) which has considerable presence on the wrist despite its simplicity and thinness. The colours in which the model is available are blue, brown and green.

piaget-sihh2017-8Each dial has a sunburst effect dial and is powered by the self winding Manufacture de Haute Horlogerie Piaget Calibre 1200P (2.35 mm thin).

PARMIGIANI

One of the surprise packages for us this fair is Parmigiani. Whilst they’re not the brand an average man would immediately choose, we do think there’s some great pieces in this year’s collection.

For the uneducated, the Parmigiani brand was founded in 1996 by Michel Parmigiani. Previously the brand was known for restoring watch artefacts and rare jewellery.

Toric Chronometer

toric-chronometer

It was the first watch designed by Michael Parmigiana in 1996 and for this year it has been reissued in its most faithful form. The iconic design has been inspired by neo-classical architecture which gives it a truly unique look. It features a hand knurled bezel, Parmigiani’s PF31 movement which is COSC certified with a 55 hour power reserve. It will be available in four versions which all come with HERMES alligator straps.

The price will be around 14,800 GBP which is not too bad considering what you’re getting.

Bugatti Aerolite Performance
parmigiani-aerolight

Parmigiani’s long commitment to automaker Bugatti continues with a completely redesigned Bugatti Aerolite Performance. The new model features a laser processed diamond dial, a double tachymeter design paying homage to colours of Bugatti and an embossed calfskin strap.

Retail on this bad boy will be about 18,300 GBP, a mere fraction of what the new Bugatti Chiron would cost you.

RICHARD MILLE

This year Richard Mille have put all their eggs in one basket and launched just one watch. Not seven, not twenty, but one. They’ve teamed up with former F1 giants McLaren – not exactly joining them at their peak but let’s say there’s a lot of upside in their 10 year partnership.

Introducing the RM50-03/01

richardmille-rm50-03-sihh
Richard Mille’s latest weighs in at a blithe 40g

The watch weighs only 40 grams…including the strap. The movement itself is only 7 grams and has been tested to 5000Gs, so you can go wild with a hammer and the thing won’t break. Also worth noting is that the RM50-03/01 is the world’s lightest mechanical chronograph.

The RM50-03 has split second chronograph allowing you to track two different events, allowing you to run laps around the kitchen bench with your very expensive watch on your wrist.

There’s only 75 pieces created so it’s perfect for the McLaren owner.

The price is 996,500 GBP…yes, a true bargain at the price of seven McLaren cars. Strangely enough the watch was not there to photograph.

ROGER DUBUIS

dsc_8838
Roger Dubuis booth at SIHH 2017

Wondering what crazy contraptions Roger Dubuis has in store for us this year…besides overly large watches that only Russians would wear. There I said it.

Regardless, their collaboration with Pirelli should have the Formula 1 heads clapping their hands.

Excalibur Spider Pirelli

roger-dubuis-sihh2017Visionary engineers at Pirelli have met with watchmakers at Roger Dubuis to create something rather unique with F1 pedigree. The concept is actually simple and pretty cool to be honest.

Pirelli collected the winning tyres from the 2017 Monaco Grand Prix and created individual straps for the limited edition Roger Dubuis watches. Each watch comes with a certificate that certifies the tyre has come from Lewis Hamilton’s winning car. On every race tyre there is a bar code which also is appears on the inside of the strap.

Roger Dubuis and Pirelli have used what they call an ‘outstanding’ pattern inside the strap for the entire collection, which is a variation of their road tyre patterns.

Roger Dubuis pushed a step ahead with a relaunch of the double flying tour billion with new power reserve indicator, colourful astral signature and wet blue colour tone.

The piece retails at 280,00 CHF!!!

JAEGER LE COUTRE

Master Control Line

After the grand release of the Reverso last year we see JLC moving into some more affordable watches to get people into the brand. This new entry level steel collection known as the Master Control Line. We think these will be a hit for the brand with their sporty yet refined look. The range has three models, Chronograph, Date and Geograph.

The chronograph is definitely one of our favourites.

TAG Heuer Revamps The Carrera Calibre 16 In Black Titanium
TAG Heuer Revamps The Carrera Calibre 16 In Black Titanium

One of TAG Heuer‘s most popular timepieces of their modern portfolio will be receiving a lightweight makeover for 2017.

In celebration of the 10th anniversary of the Chronograph Carrera Calibre 16, the latest revised model will see the watch re-cased in sleek matte black titanium case.

The new model is a definite nod to the modern man with a sportier edge heralded in with its striking choice of materials – a 43mm Grade 2 micro-blasted black PVD titanium case framed with a black ceramic bezel and beige tachymeter scale.

Those who are familiar with the Carrera name will recognise some design cues borrowed from the 60s style Carrera watches with the wide dial opening and fine bezel paired with twin chronograph counters located at the 6 and 12 o’clock mark. A fine addition to another historically inspired design element in the faceted lugs as found in the original Carrera models.

The movement (Reference CV2A84.FC6394) retains the proven TAG Heuer Calibre 16 which boasts an automatic chronograph with Day and Date functions at the 3 o’clock mark and a small seconds counter at the 9 o’clock mark. Visibility is aided with the addition of black gold and beige SuperLuminova Arabic numerals.

Flipping the watch around will reveal a sapphire case back which proudly showcases the intricate mechanics of the automatic Calibre 16 movement alongside a decorated weight with a Côtes de Genève pattern.

The Carrera Calibre 16 is water resistant up to 100 metres and comes with a distressed calfskin strap that’s designed to age with grace.

The Ultimate Men’s Shopping Guide to Tokyo
The Ultimate Men’s Shopping Guide to Tokyo

In a country famous for its pervasive shopping culture, Tokyo still manages to stand out as a shopping Mecca. At every train station, travellers are greeted with at least one shopping mall built under, above, or right next door. In fact, at Shinjuku, one of the busiest areas in Tokyo, train passengers are welcomed to their destination by no less than five shopping arcades built into the main train station. Needless to say, an inexperienced shopper could easily find himself lost amongst the many options Tokyo has to offer. This guide to the best shopping in Tokyo, will make it easier to find what you’re looking for next time you find yourself in the bustling Japanese capital.

Tokyo Shopping District # 1 – Ginza

Best shopping in Tokyo
Ginza is eight blocks of high-end shopping, with some of the most expensive real estate in the world. Along the main avenue of Chuo-dori you’ll find the first Japanese department stores, such as Matsuya and Matsuzakaya, side-by-side with international brands like Chanel, Lanvin, and the Apple Store.

Ginza is home to Uniqlo’s flagship store, with four floors devoted to menswear. There’s also Gap, H&M, Zara and Abercrombie & Fitch, each with an interesting Japanese twist to their selections. Shoppers can find Japanese jewellers from Tenshodo to Mikimoto, as well as De Beers and Van Cleef & Arpels. Every major Swiss watch brand also has a boutique, from Rolex to Breitling to Patek Philippe.

Matsuya Department Store has brands such as Polo Ralph Lauren, Lanvin Sport, Paul Smith, Issey Miyake, Paul Stuart and Yohji Yamamoto. Or perhaps the concept store Dover Street Market by Rei Kawakubo is more your style, with select brands including Comme des GarçonsAlexander McQueen, Thom Brown, Supreme and many more.

Tokyo Shopping District # 2 – Yuurakucho

Best shopping in Tokyo

Yuurakucho is walking distance from Ginza. Yuurakucho boasts the largest Muji store in Japan – from chic coffee pots to stylish bicycles, and comfortable weekend polo shirts to 90 degree angled ergonomic socks, they’ve got it all.

For the gentleman who’s pressed for time, there’s the Hankyu Men’s Department Store, a one stop shop dedicated entirely to menswear. Here you’ll find Viktor & Rolf, Goyard, Costume National, Paul and Joe, Dsquared2 and more. Or head to over to Garage inside Hankyu for some Alexander Wang, Rick Owens, Maison Kitsune, Wooyoungmi, and rag & bone. There you can also get a taste of Japanese brands like junhashimotoNeighborhood, and nonnative.

Local Tip: Adjacent to Hankyu is Lumine 2. Head to Tomorrowland, which occupies the 3rd level, a mini sartorial heaven of finely curated styles from brands ranging from Acne to Dries Van Noten. You will also find Urban Research here, on the 4th level.

Tokyo Shopping District # 3 – Roppongi/Azabu-juuban

Best shopping in Tokyo

The Roppongi and Azabu-juuban area is one of the most international regions of Tokyo, with foreign embassies, multinational companies and a high concentration of ex-pats. The two main shopping areas here are Tokyo Midtown and Roppongi Hills. Although Roppongi has gained notoriety for its nightlife, it’s an equally pleasant place to bring the family during the daytime.

Tokyo Midtown, connected to the Oedo line train station, provides luxury shopping. Expect to find famous international brands from Brooks Brothers to Harry Winston. The Suntory Museum, housed inside Tokyo Midtown, is also worth visiting, if only for the cool interiors. Delightful lifestyle stores showcase both Japanese and foreign object design. After a long afternoon of shopping, the restaurant floor in Tokyo Midtown is also well worth a visit.

Tokyo Shopping District #4 – Omotesando

Best shopping in Tokyo

If the Ginza/Yuurakucho area is the favored destination for mainstream shopping, Omotesando is the favourite for art mixed with retail. Omotesando is a tree-lined avenue that’s home to beautiful architecture and notable buildings such as One Omotesando (which houses LVMH’s brand showrooms), Omotesando Hills, Prada, Dior, Tod’s, and Ralph Lauren. You will also find flagship stores and head offices for Japanese brands and designers, including Rei Kawakubo’s Comme des Garçons.

Coming from the vast and wooded temple grounds of the Meiji Shrine, you’ll find yourself at the welcoming glass facade of Tokyu Omotesando Plaza. Although the shops are mostly geared towards women, you will find a Tokyu Hands lifestyle store inside as well as Bills (yes, Bill Granger’s restaurant) on the top floor. There are also many high street shops in this area, such as Topshop/Topman, and Singapore’s Charles & Keith for shoes and other leather goods. Tip: Head to the 6th floor of the Tokyu Omotesando Plaza, where you’ll find Starbucks and a gorgeous terrace area that turns into a craft beer garden in the summer.

In Omotesando Hills, you’ll find boutiques for brands like Dolce & Gabbana, junhashimoto, Saint Lauren, and Bottega Veneta – as well as less well known labels such as japanese brand Dartin Bonaparto, Danish denim brand Denham, and Ann Demeulemeester.

Tokyo Shopping District #5 – Harajuku

Best shopping in Tokyo

The Harajuku district’s unique approach to style is world famous. Turning left into a side street near Ralph Lauren will bring you to Harajuku (or as locals call it Urahara, meaning ‘back streets of Harajuku’), where you are greeted by a Marc Jacobs store and numerous Japanese select shops, boutiques, cafes, and restaurants. You’ll find Paul Smith Jeans, Opening Ceremony’s Japanese flagship store, and Wut Berlin for select German labels. Other shops to look out for include the Onitsuka Tiger flagship store, Julien David flagship store, and Nemeth. For A.P.C. fans, a pilgrimage to the ‘A.P.C. Harajuku Underground’ store is a must.

Restaurant Tip: If you’re looking for a fun Japanese dining experience involving hot plates and savoury Japanese ‘pizza’, check out Sakura Tei right behind the Harajuku Design Festa gallery.

Tokyo Shopping District #6 – Shibuya

Best shopping in Tokyo

Shibuya offers mainstream shopping mostly aimed at pre-teens and those in their mid-twenties. It’s hardly a destination for serious sartorial finds, but it’s a solid choice for modern-day Japanese cultural exploration and good eats.

Here in the Hikarie tower you’ll find shops like Manhattan Portage, Marc by Marc Jacobs, and local high street brands such as United Arrows. A trip to Urban Research offers both original designs by the brand and collaborations with other labels, as well as select foreign brands from English label Barbour to collaborations like New Balance x Herschel Supply.

Through the West Exit you’ll find Mark City, another shopping area with a sprawling selection of fine foods and fresh produce. Pick up some souvenir sake to bring home, have a scoop of gelato, or perhaps take some katsudon and gourmet rice balls back to the hotel.

Tokyo Shopping District #7 – Shinjuku

Best shopping in Tokyo

Shinjuku is most popular with those in their 20s and beyond, combining both luxury and mainstream shopping. It also has a high concentration of izakaya and the ever-popular tourist destination Kabukicho, or the red-light district. Unlike other red light districts around the world, there are no scantily clad women here – instead it’s a feast of neon lights and questionable hairstyle choices.

But Kabukicho is hardly what Shinjuku is all about. Takashimaya’s clock tower is home to 15 floors of food and shopping. On the west side, you will find two department stores: the Keio Department Store and the Odakyu HALC. Both stores offer luxury shopping from Tiffany to Dunhill. For gadget geeks, head over to the huge Yodobashi Camera, divided into two buildings, one specifically for mobile phones and accessories, and another for general gear such as laptops, cameras, and even watches.

In the southeast you’ll find Lumine 2, which carries mostly Japanese boutiques as well as the likes of Opening Ceremony. You will also find Gap and Topshop/Topman, or can check out the multi-floor Comme Ca store, where you’ll find everything from kidswear to menswear, and casual clothes to RTW suits.

Elsewhere in Shinjuku, shoppers can find Gucci, Barney’s, and a 5-floor building called BEST that sells nothing but watches.

Tokyo Shopping District #8 – Daikanyama

Best shopping in Tokyo

If you’re a seasoned traveler in Tokyo and have exhausted the Shinjuku-Ginza-Shibuya circuit, this neighbourhood may be for you.

Daikanyama is a trendy district filled with sartorial finds and subtle, beautiful architecture. It’s quiet on weekdays and filled with a healthy buzz on weekends. There’s no such thing as overdressing in Daikanyama and the key word to keep in mind is style. There are tons of select shops such as Via Bus Stop, carrying brands from Avenue Shoe Repair to Carven to Wooyoungmi. Check out the moody A.P.C. men’s shop, pick up a pair of new specs from Oliver Peoples, or spend far more time than necessary picking out socks from specialty store Kutsushitaya by Tabio.

Daikanyama is where you go to feel good and be in the company of other people with exceptional taste. It’s also where you go to max out your credit card.
