Forget Wimbledon: This Was The Biggest Win Of Nick Kyrgios’ Career
Forget Wimbledon: This Was The Biggest Win Of Nick Kyrgios’ Career

Nick Kyrgios complimented his opponent, his team and himself, after beating Daniil Medvedev in a four set thriller, and securing his spot in the quarter finals of the US Open for the first time ever.

Nick Kyrgios showed impressive composure in today’s exciting four-set battle against world number one Daniil Medvedev. Kyrgios closed out the match in the fourth set. The final score was: 7-6, 3-6, 6-3, 6-2.  According to FOX Sports, Kyrgios “fired 20 aces, 52 winners and won 75 per cent on his first serve.”

Not bad statistics. But what did Kyrgios have to say for himself? After laughing off a controversial foul shot he made in the third set (which cost him a point but appeared to give him a mental edge) and calling himself an idiot, Kyrgios gave a classic post match interview.

“It was an amazing match – obviously Daniil is defending champion, a lot of pressure on his shoulders – but I played really well, I’ve been playing amazing the last couple of months,” Kyrgios said.

“What a place to do it, packed house in New York. I’m extremely blessed.”

He added: “I’m still trying to figure it out, honestly. I’m just trying to work hard every day, make every practice session count.”

“I’d probably be out every night before. Now I’ve got a great girlfriend, she helps me, and my team…It’s all my team. I’m just really happy and hopefully I can keep it going.”

“I’m rating that as the best match I’ve seen Nick Kyrgios at a grand slam tournament,” one commentator, Todd Woodbridge, said after the match.

“And the biggest win,” another commentator, Jelena Dokic, added.

“That was not just great tennis, the serving display, but the mental strength.”

“This was potentially for me the turning point in Kyrgios’ career, more than the Wimbledon final, because this is the biggest win of his career. This could potentially get him that Grand Slam win.”

Kyrgios has now beaten Medvedez twice in one year, making him the first player to beat the world number one twice in the same year since 1987.

Superyacht Nightmare In Western Australia Leaves Customers High & Dry
Superyacht Nightmare In Western Australia Leaves Customers High & Dry

A luxury boat charter company operating off Western Australia has (fiscally) sunk, leaving furious passengers demanding tens of thousands of dollars back.

Island Escape Cruises NZ, a company whose website suggests it runs trips in the Kimberly, Australia, as well as various other places, has gone into receivership. This has put it in the hands of Calibre Partners NZ. The cruise company cancelled a series of 12-day voyages leaving various passengers in the lurch, as part of the fiasco. The company’s 53.5 metre superyacht, which is called Island Escape, has been impounded at Broome Port, the ABC reports, “with a federal court order restricting its movements and operations.”

Latte Luxury News reported in July: “Feedback from impacted guests shared on Island Escape Cruises’ Facebook page indicates there was no forewarning that their 3 July cruise would not be proceeding, with some guests either already in Broome or in transit to the Western Australian city in anticipation of boarding the intimately sized 30-guest ship.”

Queensland man Murrie Taylor, for instance, who says he paid 30 odd thousand dollars to book a cruise in early July from Broome, found himself a little bit screwed. He told the ABC his bus never showed up at the hotel lobby where he and other passengers were staying (where it was supposed to take them to the cruise). When he asked where it was, he was allegedly told it wouldn’t be coming. He ended up stranded without accommodation for that night, he says. Unfortunately for him, and others like him, Calibre Partners NZ have warned refunds are unlikely at this point.

Calibre Partners NZ representative Neale Jackson reportedly has said: “We do not yet know what led the company being in this position” and “It [the company] cannot pay any refunds because it does not have any cash to do so.”

Mr Jackson also said: “We expect that money customers are owed will rank as an unsecured claim against the relevant company.”

A note at the top of Island Escape Cruises’ website, at the time of writing, reads: “Island Escape Cruises (NZ) Ltd went into receivership on 23 August 2022 and the business is not trading. Any queries can be directed to the receivers office at iecnzl@calibrepartners.co.nz. The Australian entity, Island Escape Cruises (Australia) Pty Ltd, is not in receivership and all queries should be directed to its directors or the registered office.”

The company’s Instagram, at the time of writing, looks quite sparse. Some customers have told the ABC the lack of communication from the company has led them to start some legal action in the hope of getting some of their money back.

Old Byron Bay Golf Course Tipped To Sell For $180 Million
Old Byron Bay Golf Course Tipped To Sell For $180 Million

A 40-hectare North Belongil beachfront block is, according to local sources, projected to sell for between $160 million and $180 million. It belongs to billionaire mining engineer Brian Flannery and his real estate savvy wife Peggy, who runs the KTQ Group. Pacifico Property’s Christian Sergiacomi and CBRE Hotels’ Wayne Bunz are in charge of flogging it. The land used to be home to a 9 hole golf course.

A North Byron beachfront block of land (stretching 1.1km longways across the beach) is being put up for sale. It comprises 40 acres, and it is part of the 90 acres of land billionaire mining engineer Brian Flannery and his family bought for 18.5 million 12 years ago. The family is now looking to sell 40 acres of that land. Given how bonkers the Byron Bay property market has become, they are likely to turn a major profit in doing so.

The land has an asking price of more than $160 million. It’s being marketed via an expressions of interest campaign, which will conclude on September the 28th. Other properties on the land and nearby include the Elements of Byron luxury resort, which Brian Flannery and his wife Peggy Flannery developed through their KTQ Group at a cost of $120 million, and which is part of the Accor Hotels MGallery Collection.

AFR reports, “Another small part of the original site housing the Sun Hotel was sold last year to prominent Sydney developer Philip Wolanksi’s Denwol and the Winchester Group for about $11 million.”

The 40 hectares that is currently up for sale sits between the Elements of Byron resort and the Tyagarah Nature reserve. It is also made up of four land titles, coming to market after a rezoning process that has caused some consternation among some locals on the Byron Bay Community Facebook page (but which is presumably an attractive feature to prospective buyers). It is also serviced by town infrastructure. Part of the beachfront block used to be a golf course. The sellers are hoping to rouse interest from international buyers.

According to The Hotel Conversation, KTQ Group Development Director Jeremy Holmes has said: “The land is a remarkable piece of the Australian coastline. We have been the fortunate caretakers of this site for 12 years. In addition to the cleared portion of the site which was formerly a nine-hole golf course, there is a diverse swathe of protected and restored habitat including dunal, wetland and sclerophyll ecologies.”

The rezoning process permits the site to be subdivided into nine lots that can each accommodate one residence. The place is also, attractively, just a 3-kilometre walk down the beach to the main town of Byron Bay.

Though hotelmanagement.com.au reported in 2016 that “Elements of Byron owner, Peggy Flannery, held tight reins during the planning process to ensure that nature, not buildings, was the dominant experience” and that Elements of Byron had a “10% only development footprint coupled with innovative design and technology” many local residents are not sold on how eco-friendly this latest business move will prove.

Speaking about this latest selling off of property (not about Elements of Byron) one Facebook user wrote: “They’re going to divide it into 9 super blocks with one residential house on each.. meanwhile in the real world we have a housing crisis.”

Another optimist wrote: “I’d love to see the land next to Elements (that runs parallel to the carpark) with beach access be turned into a public reserve for future generations to enjoy. Surely given the net worth of the current owners & their ties to the Byron community, they could exclude that small parcel from the sale.”

Disgruntled Facebook users, discussing the latest in Byron Bay real estate news…

A third disgruntled Facebook user said: “So the Flannerys got it rezoned and they keep the subsequent windfall profit while adding nothing. Best way to make money in Australia is to buy land, lobby Council’s and government, get it rezoned with little or no community benefit then sell it. Ain’t the system grand.”

Another common gripe in the community group’s Facebook page is the lack of affordable housing, and how middle and low income earners are being priced out of the market (that said, some people believe this ultra-exclusive style of development has a silver lining in that it may be – for this particular region – better for the immediate environment than affordable housing would have been).

Several interested parties have already expressed their interest in the beachfront block of land, it has been reported. With a lot of young people moving to more affordable pastures like Newcastle and the Gold Coast, however, it remains unknown how long the new owners will have to wait for their Oat Milk Flat Whites when they stroll into town, with the Byron Bay Mayor worrying that there may be a staff shortage in the region’s cafes and bars come the summer crunch, telling Daily Mail Australia: “We are going to be in real trouble if we have a busy tourist season.”

I’m sure there’s a violin for that.

A$AP Rocky Learns Rap Stars Are Not Immune From Parking Fines
A$AP Rocky Learns Rap Stars Are Not Immune From Parking Fines

The New York hip-hop star might be one of the biggest musicians on the planet, but it seems even he can’t avoid parking inspectors…

A$AP Rocky loves cars (more than most rappers) and has a rather eclectic taste in vehicles. While his personal collection mostly contains modern supercars like his Ferrari 488GTB or Lamborghini Gallardo, he’s also a fan of vintage whips: notably, his ‘Testing’ world tour featured BMW E30s and Porsche 924s as stage props.

But it’s a Jeep Wagoneer SJ that’s got him in hot water lately. Earlier this year, the 33-year-old was spotted in Los Angeles driving around in one of these classic station wagons with fellow rapper Kanye West and NFL star-turned-rapper Antonio Brown. Cool stuff.

Now, the same car was spotted getting towed after sitting idle on a Los Angeles street since February. A TMZ video shows the car getting towed – as well as how it’s racked up plenty of parking fines.

WATCH A$AP Rocky’s car getting towed below.

It’s not clear whether Rocky owns the car or if it was just a rental, but in any case, it’s a real shame letting such a rare car just sit out in the open, exposed to the elements like that.

Produced from 1962 to 1991, the Jeep Wagoneer SJ was arguably the world’s first SUV, and easily the world’s first luxury SUV, beating the classic Range Rover to market by 7 years. Huge, exceptionally capable off-road and comfy as hell, it was a truly revolutionary vehicle and an in-demand classic car in 2022.

Rocky’s appears to be a late 80s/early 90s example (the grille and wheels are a giveaway), which are considered to be the cream of the crop when it comes to Wagoneers.

Hopefully Flacko gets his car back… Or that it goes to a good home, at least.

How Nick Kyrgios Gained A Mental Edge Over Daniil Medvedev
How Nick Kyrgios Gained A Mental Edge Over Daniil Medvedev

Nick Kyrgios appears to have won a mental battle with himself while playing against ATP world number one tennis player Daniil Medvedev, with a super cheeky move that boosted his mood, despite costing him a crucial point, at a turning point in their round four match-up.

Nick Kygrios, Australia’s most entertaining tennis player, who went into his round four US Open match up with Daniil Medvedev ranked at world number 25 (and who was the 23rd seed in the competition), and who is 27 years old, has cemented his infamous reputation even further today, during his clash with the aloof but skilful Russian 26-year-old.

Even as Kyrgios won the first set (6-7) against Daniil Medvedev he was complaining, accusing the umpire of starting the shot clock too early, and claiming she was the only umpire who he had ever had this problem with (Kyrgios is known for his fast-paced service games). Kyrgios said: “Not one issue in three months, not one. I play the fastest on tour, I’m getting back to the baseline with four seconds. What are you doing?”

Things appeared to get even worse when, after losing the second set and sitting at 30-30 in Medvedev’s second service game of the third set, Medvedev sent a shot high up into the air, which was clearly going out, until Kyrgios ran onto Medvedev’s side of the court and smashed it. Kyrgios continued running after the shot, raised a finger in the air, and grinned at Medvedev, with the Medvedev gesticulating with his racquet at the umpire.

This was deemed an illegal shot as the ball was struck on his opponent’s side of the court (even though it went in). The decision cost Kyrgios a big point. Commentator Todd Woodbridge said: “What an error in judgement,” and: “That should have been break point.”

“Oh dear. What will be the repercussions of that? I’ve never seen anything like that in all my time in tennis. That is crazy.”

Todd Woodbridge

Kyrgios told his team: “I honestly thought it was legal.” Rather than the moment leading to self implosion, however, Kyrgios seemed to take a mental win from it. He soon started playing better. This, we’d argue, is because he loses his sh*t when he plays badly and loses points because his opponent plays better than him. In this case though, despite losing the point, Kyrgios took mental strength from it because he was satisfied in knowing he had played well in that rally.

Kyrgios went on to get the first break of the set after that, with commentator Jelena Dokic saying: “That mistake he made, that usually would have rattled him but now he is playing better.” Kyrgios then went on to win the whole match, thanking his partner Costeen Hatzi and complimenting Medvedev when interviewed at the end of the clash.

Kyrgios also laughed off the foul shot and called himself an idiot in the interview.

“It was an amazing match – obviously Daniil is defending champion, a lot of pressure on his shoulders – but I played really well, I’ve been playing amazing the last couple of months,” Kyrgios said.

“What a place to do it, packed house in New York. I’m extremely blessed. I’m still trying to figure it out, honestly. I’m just trying to work hard every day, make every practice session count.”

“It’s all my team. I’m just really happy and hopefully I can keep it going.”

Kyrgios will now face Karen Khachanov, who got to the quarter-finals of the US Open for the first time on Sunday after knocking out Spanish 12th seed Pablo Carreno Busta in an epic five-set match.

Is Timothée Chalamet’s Latest Outfit Actually Stylish, Or Just Shocking?
Is Timothée Chalamet’s Latest Outfit Actually Stylish, Or Just Shocking?

The Hollywood superstar and unconventional heartthrob is known for his eclectic, boundary-pushing style… But we think the hype around his latest outfit might be a bit overdone.

The 26-year-old actor, who has become a household name thanks to his starring roles in films like Call Me by Your Name, Dune and The King, was the talk of the town at the 79th Venice International Film Festival thanks to his red carpet style.

In attendance for the screening of his latest project, the bloody and strange romatic horror film Bones & All, Chalamet wore an appropriately crimson outfit: a silk bodysuit with a billowy front and no back, plus a matching tie draped around his neck.

Naturally, it’s had his legions of adoring fans frothing at the mouth. You’d definitely feel the breeze in it (it is averaging 28° in Venice right now so it might be a practical ‘fit) but we can’t help but feel as if it’s just a bit of a stunt. Is he wearing this because he’s a stylish gent, or just to grab eyeballs?

WATCH Timothée Chalamet’s Venice outfit below.

The purpose of haute couture is to push boundaries; redefine what style is – and celebrities, with their public profile and wealth, are typically the only people who can redefine fashion.

But often with celebrity style, there’s a degree of groupthink. Is Timothée’s outfit actually cool; actually ground-breaking, or do we just like it because he’s wearing it? Would we applaud it so readily if it was worn by another male celeb or indeed just an average bloke?

We reckon he looks like a half-wrapped Christmas present.

It’s one thing when male celebrities like Harry Styles or Kid Cudi challenge gender stereotypes in fashion by wearing traditionally feminine clothing. That at least is making a political statement and helping make fashion more inclusive for everybody.

But Chalamet wearing a giant red ribbon seems facile; clout-chase-y. Or maybe we’ve just woken up on the wrong side of the bed this morning…

How Much Superyacht Crews Really Get Paid
How Much Superyacht Crews Really Get Paid

Madison Jay, a superyacht crew member with 6.5 years at sea, says superyacht crew typically start on a salary of 2,500 euros a month. According to the Superyacht Crew Academy, superyacht crew can earn up to 20,000 euros a month, once they have more experience, and if they score a job on a bigger, top-dollar paying boat.

Madison Jay, a superyacht crew member who has spent 6 and a half years at sea, has taken to TikTok to share how much superyacht crew typically get paid. In a video, she said: “The starting salary for a superyacht crew is 2,500 euro per month and then your leave allowance is anywhere from 38 days to 90 days.”

“All of this obviously increases as you gain more experience and skills over time. The other thing to note is that there are no living expenses with working onboard a boat – you live on board so it’s rent-free, you don’t have any bills.”

On top of all that, Madison said, “Chefs prepare your meals, there are snacks provided, there’s even crew alcohol provided most of the time, and your toiletries are available for free too – so everything you make is yours. If you are sick of the rising cost of living then this might be the perfect solution for you.” In a recent Instagram post, Madison also said: “If you get to earn USD, the current exchange rate is essentially giving you a 12% pay rise.”

WATCH: How Much Superyacht Crew Get Paid

In the comments section, Madison added: “Some boats don’t make tips, others can make up to an additional €40k every summer season.” She also said the cost to prepare to be hired depends on the country (and where you relocate to look for work, and how long it takes you).

Then, when it comes to the initial costs to get the legal requirements to work onboard, she says that is “well and truly covered within your first month onboard.” Other interesting questions she answered included how long you stay on the boat for (“you live on the boat permanently [and] trips can be anywhere from a couple days to months at a time”) and how tax works (“you are responsible to pay tax / declare your wage in your country, each country has different rules for ‘seafarers’… Most people earn tax free income”).

RELATED: Superyacht Captain Shares ‘Unbelievable’ High Sea Stories

She also touched on the differences between working on a charter boat vs. working for a private owner, explaining: “There are lots of things that affect what you are paid on top – rotation, standard leave, busy, quiet, and generally just what the owner wants to pay!”

TikTok user superyachtgirl has also talked about how much yachties get paid, explaining in a video that “the size of your salary depends on the size of your yacht and also your position on board” and claiming that “it also varies if you’re on a charter boat or a private boat” because on charter boats you get tips whereas on private boats “you don’t get tips but you do get bonuses and stuff at the end of the year, [and this] varies between each program.” Superyacht Crew Academy, for their part, say crew salaries range from 2,000 euros to 20,000 euros depending on yacht size and experience.

If you’re sick of the rising costs of living, who knows, perhaps working on a superyacht is the change you need in your life in 2023?

As Madison points out, given the pending recession, working on a superyacht is an ever more attractive proposition because while living expenses have gone up in price, salaries have not, meaning “it’s impossible to get ahead & bills/living expenses are chewing up majority of peoples earnings.” Meanwhile, working on a yacht, you are not impacted by the rising costs of living (because everything you consume is free).

Madison also points out that working for the super rich gives you a certain level of job security. On Instagram she wrote: “Yachting seems to be somewhat ‘protected’ by most things that happen around the world” pointing out that “during Covid, yes some people lost jobs but most of us were busier than ever.”

She says this was because “rich people were still rich and they saw a yacht as a ‘covid free’ safe haven when they couldn’t holiday anywhere else.”

“This is also a massive reason as to why there are now 1024 superyachts in build or on order, which is a 24.7% rise on the previous year!! The demand for good crew is only growing.”

Madison Jay

Though it’s not all fun in the sun (there are also Atlantic crossings and many days of hard work), the camaraderie can reportedly be amazing, and you get a peek behind the veil at how the other half live. According to superyachtgirl all you need to get started is an ENG1 Medical Certificate, the STCW95 qualification (a 5 day or so course) a food hygiene level 2 qualification and a half-day security duties course.

Then you need to actually get hired. That might be hard, but at least you now know how much you are likely to get paid if and when this happens.
