New Celebrity ‘Fashion’ Choices Prove A-Listers Are Now Prioritising Health Over Style
New Celebrity ‘Fashion’ Choices Prove A-Listers Are Now Prioritising Health Over Style

The world of celebrity brings with it various levels of aspiration (some good, some bad, depending on the icon in question), but the most common connotation is that celebrities are in a world of their own. One that we regular folk will never understand or be able to relate to. But maybe that’s not the case after all.

The pandemic currently sweeping the globe has affected everyone in the same way, celebrities included. And it’s meant the people we look up to have revealed themselves to be just like us – at least, in the way they dress, that is.

With most major countries in lockdown, we haven’t been able to see as many photos of the rich and famous as we normally would. But the ones that have braved the outside world appear to have put health and comfort above their normally fashion-focused attitudes.

Shawn Mendes is a serial outside stroller. The Canadian singer can’t quite seem to grasp the fact we should be staying indoors and only heading outside for essential tasks. However, he and girlfriend Camila Cabello appear to take daily morning walks around Florida wearing the epitome of loungewear – as well as showing his allegiance to the CrossFit cult – a far cry from the usual suite of slick suits we normally see the pop star wearing.

Harry Styles is another example of someone who can’t stand being stuck indoors all the time, and so has taken it upon himself to get his daily exercise in by taking solo strolls around his LA neighbourhood. On both occasions he was spotted, he could be seen rocking some regular gym shorts and sneakers, paired with a hoodie.

This Columbia Records hoodie, the label to which Harry is signed, can be yours for US$65. It’s certainly a change in direction from the sweaters we’ve seen him wear on previous occasions, such as a $1,190 Lanvin vest.

Chris Pine took a severely stripped back approach during a trip to the grocery store in Los Angeles, pairing a singlet with what could either be a pair of swim shorts or perhaps boxer shorts. He at least did his best at covering up his face, although we’re not sure how well a cotton bandana will protect those around him. He could learn a thing or two from Kanye West.

While we might draw some criticism towards his outfit of choice, or at least easily compare it to something we’d wear, Chris proves he’s a step above the majority of us by rolling around in his Porsche 356 Speedster.

Finally, Canadian actor of Dawson’s Creek fame Joshua Jackson put together a laidback outfit if ever we saw one, comprising an Oxford shirt, white t-shirt and baggy-fit lounge pants. But he at least has his sensible head screwed on and went out wearing a filtered face mask to protect himself and those around him. At least some of them are taking it seriously.

While we can comfortably predict that as soon as the pandemic is over, the same famous faces will be back to wearing their high-value – sometimes sponsored – outfits, we can take some solace that for now, it’s bringing us all closer together.

Business Class Passengers Reveal Their Most Mortifying Faux Pas
Business Class Passengers Reveal Their Most Mortifying Faux Pas

No one’s flying right now. The consequence? A grounded lie flat community, united in frustration, despite the generous 12-month status extensions they’ve been given.

Though it’s nice to maintain your points without flying, nothing beats the real thing. It is with that sense of ennui that the business class travellers of the world have turned to Twitter to regale us with tales of happier (and riper with embarrassment) times.

Most entertainingly are their mortifying business class f*ck ups. Faux pas, mistakes, errors – call them what you will, these are a ray of light in an overcast time for the travel industry.

Kicking us off with a cringe is music producer Eptic, who revealed he had some trouble getting used to The Pointy End.

As his followers kindly pointed out, his praise would have been better directed at the microwave. “You have to delete yourself now” one wrote while another went in even harder: “This some sh*t people in Canada do.”

DJ World Champion ESKEI83 then weighed in, admitting he had similar issues: “First time I upgraded I was too shy to ask how to flatten my seat… second time I spilled a full cup of coffee on my neighbour.”

Next up is Twitter user Chris Brady, who recently posted a GIF that describes how we all feel when we get bumped up for the first time. This is something I can vouch for, after my first ever business class flight ruined me for life.

A post by another Twitter user, Shk Mahmood, from earlier in the month, encapsulates the sentiment perfectly.

None of these compare, though, to the iconic faux pas made by Adrian Wooldridge, political editor of the Economist.

As he once admitted in 1843, some years ago he “decided to go for the full six-course menu, which started with caviar and vodka and culminated via various Far Eastern detours with stilton and other cheese.”

“My fellow travellers arrived in South Africa fresh as daisies for their meetings. I arrived drunk, dishevelled and desperate to nap.”

Lesson learned.

Having had more than one business class mishap ourselves (from being kept awake by a prominent Australian celebrity to experiencing a mid-air existential crisis), we can relate.

But hey: even though those moments sucked – now we miss them. Fingers crossed we can all get back in the air soon.

Australian Barbers Reveal The Secrets To A Professional-Looking Home Haircut
Australian Barbers Reveal The Secrets To A Professional-Looking Home Haircut

It’s clear already that self-isolation can make us do some weird yet wonderful things. Sure, we could take the time to focus on ourselves, improve our wellbeing, or become fitter. But where’s the fun in that? For some guys, quarantine is so boring they’ve started cutting their own hair. Even this writer is guilty (but it needed cutting anyway, so it’s justified). For others, it’s more likely a case of “why not?”. After all, there’s plenty of time for it to grow out again. We’ve already seen some pretty horrendous results of what can happen when a man, or indeed his friend or partner, is let loose with a set of hair clippers or a pair of scissors, and so we felt it was our duty to bring you a definitive guide for cutting your hair at home.We spoke to a couple of barbers, and they were in agreement that ultimately, you shouldn’t cut your own hair at home. Instead, you should wait until the restrictions are lifted so that when you do return to your local barbershop, the extra length will give you the opportunity to try something new.But if you really can’t wait, then let us guide you on the path to a poster-worthy haircut, rather than one that will require you to spend the rest of lockdown with a bag over your head.

Tools For The Job

First, you’ll want to arm yourself with a good set of clippers. Your beard trimmer or body groomer won’t suffice here, as the blades won’t be strong enough to cut through your luscious locks. Since going out to buy a set wouldn’t qualify as “essential travel”, then you’ll need to buy a set, such as this one, online. We imagine you already will, but make sure you have a mirror – you don’t want to go into this blind – and a good set of scissors. The ones in your kitchen will probably be a little too big to manoeuvre around your head, so try and get your hands on a more manageable set.Now you’ve got the tools you need, how do you go about using them? We’ve broken things down to cover the three most common hairstyles men will want to be rocking: the clean shave; the fade; and the slight trim. So, without further ado.

The Clean Shave

A clean shave haircut is the simplest and easiest to carry out yourself at home. All you need is a good set of clippers and the courage to get rid of your mane. Choose a low guard, anything between 1 to 3, unless you want to go full zero, then just move it across your head in sections, making sure to go over each area several times so as not to miss any hairs. You should also always cut against the hair growth, which will more than likely mean you’ll need to cut upwards. Go over the same section a few times to make sure no little hairs are missed. As for how the clean shave should look? Look no further than David Beckham.

The Fade

Carly Flint a hairdresser at Mardi Salon in Caringbah, Sydney – which has a dedicated upstairs space for gents – recommends guys don’t try giving themselves fades at home. But guys can be stubborn and will appreciate a challenge. So if you are up to it, here’s what you need to do to get a perfect fade.First, decide what type of fade you want: low, mid, high, tapered.Once you have that locked down, it’s time to start cutting. Always start at the bottom of your hair, from the neckline. This is where you’ll cut the hair to its shortest length, so choose a low guard number – 0,1,2 – and cut upwards in short strokes. You only want to cut to a certain point of your hair with the low length, and once you reach the desired area, you’ll want to switch the guard out for a longer length and carry on cutting. You want to finish around the temple line of your head before you start blending the hair together. You can blend using clippers, but you’ll want to arm yourself with a comb first. Use the comb to expose the hair you want to cut and then trim across it using the clippers. Continue this around the temple region of your head and you’ll soon start to see it blend together.

The Slight Trim

Some guys may be pretty happy with the hair they have already – or they’re too scared they’ll mess their own hair cut up – but will just want to give it a general tidy up.First, you should get some clips to separate the long hair on top from the shorter sides. Once that’s done, Carly says you should “just use a low guard like a 2 or higher on the back and sides.”If you’re not sure how long or short a certain guard is, always start with a higher number. You can cut it shorter if you need, but you can’t cut longer! When it comes to tackling the top, do as your barber would. Grab a section of hair at the front and centre in your fingers to determine the length you want to cut it. Then work backwards, keeping to the same length you cut at the start. Do the same on either side of your head and then use the same blending technique as the fade to create a seamless cut.And “for our long-haired babes…”, Carly’s words, “…they can put their hair in a high point tail and then just hold the hair straight up and snip the ends.”For neck hair and hard to reach areas like over your ears, you’ll do well to have someone help you out. This is also where you beard trimmer can come in handy. Remove the guard and tidy up the neckline. Some prefer a straight line while others are to follow the natural growth lineNow you’re armed with the equipment and the tips, we don’t expect to see any more horrendous results.

Men’s Haircut FAQ

Can I give myself a buzz cut?

Absolutely. The buzzcut is one of the easiest haircuts to do, even on your own. When cutting, use the 3-2-1 rule. Work your clippers from front to back. Start on the top of your head and use a #3 guard, a #2 guard on the sides, and a #1 guard when trimming up the edges.

How do I hydrate my hair?

You can easily keep your hair hydrated at home. Using cool water helps because it seals in hair moisture. You can also try to use leave-in conditioner. If your hair tends to be dry, shampoo less.

What are other tips when cutting my hair?

Cut your hair when it is still damp. If it is too wet, you may end up cutting off a lot more than you mean too. Dry is also risky. Stylists have proper dry cutting scissors if you want to take that option.

What Australian Media Got Wrong In Their Shaming Of ‘Defiant’ Rich Beachgoers
What Australian Media Got Wrong In Their Shaming Of ‘Defiant’ Rich Beachgoers

As surfers and bubble butts made international news last week, Bondi became a meme. Local media quickly cottoned on, and now we’re seeing the same story ‘reported’ on every stretch of sand with a Backpackers and Bottle-O.

The next victim? Manly. The most famous beach in Sydney after Bondi.

Manly was shut down on Sunday morning, after a North East swell, classic Autumn offshores and a rising thermometer attracted stupid numbers of surfers, swimmers and tan seekers the previous afternoon.

A post shared by Marine Raynard (@thefrenchieescapes) on

Everyone from The Daily Mail to The Telegraph got in on the clicks: “Rich Pricks Prioritize THEIR Fitness Over YOUR Health” (loosely paraphrased) they claimed, while forgetting Manly residents, like everyone else in Australia, were just trying to get a bit of exercise.

Yes, a few chose to linger in groups, but these were few and far between. The reason the beach was closed was the sheer number of people using it – a problem residents argue is caused by people driving in.

Though in the scheme of things (we could be in total lockdown like Italy or Spain), it’s nothing to whinge about, and while it’s lazy to broadly dismiss ‘the media’ (which media?), locals were understandably irritated that drive-ins and digital shrills had ruined their chances of going for a dip.

As Internewscast reported, “Residents of Sydney’s northern beaches have slammed police and the local council for closing Manly Beach after thousands flocked to the sand in spite of strict social distancing policies.”

“I find it ridiculous,” one resident wrote on the Northern Beaches Council Facebook Page. “I work 40+ hours a week from my home, live 50 yards from Manly beach and surf for my physical and mental well-being, and train on the grass by the beach.”

Another said he was worried the decision would affect his son, who used surfing to clear his head, while studying for the HSC: “Thanks Northern Beaches Council. I thought you lot were at least using some common sense and acknowledging surfing as a form of exercise.”

“Now I am truly worried about his mental well-being.”

What both miss is that the beach closure was probably the best thing that could have happened to locals, as it sends a message to non-residents it’s not worth coming, making for a sparser mid-week (the beach re-opened on Monday). And with the Easter long weekend coming up it was an especially smart call – one day of heavy-handedness could save the council a week of disobedience.

This brings us back to media manipulation. As we mentioned, we have no problem with the council’s decision to shut the beach. Just because a line can’t be drawn perfectly doesn’t mean you shouldn’t draw one at all. And we happily submit to this jackboot in other aspects of our lives (speed limits, etc).

What we do have a problem with, is media turning Australians against each other at a time we need to pull together – something we discussed last week with a clinical psychologist, who explained the mindset of living in Bondi (he concluded even though they’re stereotyped as arrogant, it’s the suburb’s fame, not the residents, necessarily, who are to blame for the crowds).

Being rich isn’t the only thing these suburbs have in common –they are also some of the most populous.

It’s much the same in Manly, with local photographer Sprout Daily taking to Instagram on Sunday to reveal an optic trick used by Australian media to make beachgoers look closer than they really are: “I’d say it was pretty mellow at Manly yesterday. I guess it depends where you look.”

“Find some space to yourself out there to stretch swim, surf, etc, there’s plenty of it. Just make sure your space is not too close to mine, ok?

“NOTE: No incriminating zoom lenses were used in these photographs.”

Heard any better shade thrown over the weekend? We’ll wait. Anyway, the post split opinion, with one commenter writing: “Still too many people out in Manly. Stay home to save lives. The more people go out the longer this will linger.”

Most followers agreed with Sprout Daily though. “Too many sensationalised articles making non beach communities jealous and upset,” one wrote, while another said: “That beat up yesterday! Those photos looked remarkably similar to some from a few weeks ago.”

“Beach walks most mornings reveal locals exercising, soaking up sun and sea air and keeping their distance.”

Further comments included, “Fake news yesterday at Manly” and, “It’s the media, and people who drive over on the weekend who are the problem.”

“The Telegraph had a telephoto lens squashing everyone close together yesterday,” another remarked.

With the long weekend imminent, we anticipate the saga will continue.

Kanye West Demonstrates How To Use Your Designer Hoodie As A Face Mask
Kanye West Demonstrates How To Use Your Designer Hoodie As A Face Mask

The current global pandemic doesn’t just affect us mere mortals, but the rich and famous have to abide by the same lockdown laws too, meaning they should only travel for “essential” purposes such as going to work. Even then, if anyone does have to step outside, they should do their best to remain a safe distance from other people, and cover their mouth up as best as possible.

We haven’t seen too many celebrities braving the outside world as of late, but if there was ever one man to do so, it was always going to be Kanye West. The music megastar was spotted on Tuesday 7th of April turning up to his office in Calabasas, California rocking one of the most bouji face masks we’ve ever seen.

View this post on Instagram

A post shared by UpscaleHype (@upscalehype) on

That’s because the oversized navy blue number is a designer hoodie first and foremost from the S/S 2018 collection from London-based designer Martine Rose, but one with enough breathing room for Yeezus to cover his face, and one that’s probably more effective than you’d think.

Don’t believe us? A study conducted by Dr. Scott Segal, chair of anesthesiology at Wake Forest Baptist Health in Winston-Salem, North Carolina, along with the Wake Forest Institute for Regenerative Medicine, found that the best makeshift masks are ones that are made from heavyweight fabrics with a thread count of at least 180.

We can’t be 100 per cent certain of the material makeup of Kanye’s jacket, but it looks pretty heavy duty to us. For comparison, surgical-grade N95 masks filter around 95 per cent of virus-related particles, the more common surgical masks you see the majority of people wearing will filter around 65 per cent of particles. Heavyweight fabrics can filter up to 79 per cent. Perhaps Kanye knew the secret before the rest of us.

Kanye paired his over-the-top face-coverer with a light wash pair of Levi’s and a super chunky pair of his own Yeezy Season 8 boots, which have attracted a fair few comments relating to a certain large yellow bird from children’s TV. The boots aren’t currently available to the public and only made their debut at the Yeezy fashion show in Paris last month.

It seems celebrities are dealing with the global crisis in their own individual ways then. Kanye is braving the outdoors but thankfully protecting himself, whereas other stars such as David Beckham have resorted to remaining inside and even cutting their own hair in the process. What’s clear, is that they’re just like you and me.

Cristiano Ronaldo’s Latest Workout Reveals Home-Training Technique Most Men Neglect

The oughties have been and gone. Now, along with sweatbands, excessively loud grunts and Etnies sneakers, people look at you weird if you still do sit-ups. In fact, up until the recent lockdown, if you did any kind of core workout that didn’t involve some fancy pant equipment – or one without a holistic, integrated approach, one would feel sneered at.

Cristiano Ronaldo, the greatest athlete (and arguably the best player) the football world has ever seen, recently said ‘screw that’ to this close-minded philosophy (in action at least). Ronaldo took to Instagram on Monday with a workout challenge that takes us all back to basics, and which will see the men (and women) of the world doing an exercise we’ve spent the last 10 years hearing is a waste of time: crunches.

Ronaldo completes 142 crunches in 45 seconds. He also invited followers to join this ‘Living Room World Cup’ (though compared to the five-time Ballon d’Or winner, we’d imagine we’re all going to be feeling pretty shabby).

The former Juventus striker has taken to Instagram numerous times over the last two months to showcase his home fitness routine, with everything from gratuitous six pack shots breathing tips…

Bad News For Those Waiting For New 2020 Rolex & Patek Philippe Watches
Bad News For Those Waiting For New 2020 Rolex & Patek Philippe Watches

In a perhaps not so surprising turn of events, Rolex, its sister company Tudor and Patek Philippe have all announced that they will be delaying their usual launch of 2020 watch models.

The keyword there is ‘delaying’, as opposed to something more drastic such as cancelling altogether. The announcement, courtesy of Hodinkeecomes during the current unprecedented situation facing the world, and it means three of the biggest names in watch community will go nearly two whole years since their last releases.

The fact neither Rolex, Tudor, nor Patek, have announced they’re cancelling their 2020 releases affords them some breathing space so that if the global situation does alleviate to a high enough degree, they could be launched before the year is out.

However, logical fingers would point to a launch at the rescheduled Baselword at the end of January 2021. The annual watch show held in Switzerland was due to take place in this month of April, with new models typically hitting retail channels around three months after in July.

It shouldn’t come as a huge surprise to learn of this delay, as all three brands rely on their networks of authorised dealers to bring in sales. Those dealers are going to be shut in the vast majority of countries right now, so there’s not a lot of point launching new models if they’re not going to end up on wrists. Sure, they could hope to rely on online sales, but buying a luxury watch such as a Rolex or a Patek brings with it the experience of going to a boutique store and trying it on in the flesh. You can’t get that online.

Also, the fact that factories and production facilities in Switzerland have been forced to close as well doesn’t help the situation. Rolex for example already has a long waitlist for models released several years ago, so those customers will now have to wait longer.

As Hodinkee Managing Editor Stephen Pulvirent says, the only respite could come in the form of Rolex using the delayed launch of a new collection to focus on fulfilling some of the current orders when the factories are deemed safe enough to reopen (whenever that may be).

So, you may need to wait even longer to snap up that new piece of wrist candy you’ve had your eye on, or for those eyeing up new collections, you’ve now got even longer to put some money aside. We’ll now wait and see if any other watch manufacturers follow suit.
