Jay Z’s Varsity Jacket Was The Real MVP At Coachella
Jay Z’s Varsity Jacket Was The Real MVP At Coachella

Well fashion punters, it would appear that the varsity jacket is still alive and well in today’s realm of men’s fashion.

Jay Z proudly championed that movement last night when he took to the stage with wifey Beyonce at the Coachella music festival in one of the slickest varsity jacket offerings to date.

Whilst the festival itself has become a product of relentless commercialisation (they had branded IV drip stations for parched partygoers), there’s no denying the celebrity pulling power the event throws down every year, bringing with it some of the most interestingly dressed men (did anyone notice that Brooklyn Beckham looks like a low-rent Justin Bieber now? More on that later).

RELATED: 25 Best Varsity Jackets For Men

Jay Z’s varsity jacket was a fine lesson in luxe streetwear which employed nothing but a black and white number with some strategically placed stripe panelling. The golden era vibes were there but what sets this piece apart is the extra shoulder detailing which further accentuates the shoulders without going the full Michael Jackson/Thriller.

Looking like Jay Z doesn’t come cheap though. Scoring a similar designed jacket to the man will set you back a smidge over AU$3,000 thanks to the good people at Saint Laurent.

The label’s leather-trimmed wool-blend bomber jacket features a very similar design to Jay-Z’s jacket with the exception of some cuffing detail. Having said that, we doubt an artist of Jay Z’s calibre (i.e. bank balance) would be rocking anything less than a few hundred dollars per item.

The question is, would you drop $3,000 on a baseball jacket made famous by Harvard University jocks back in 1865?

If the answer is ‘yes’ then you can head over to MR.PORTER to burn some cash now.

The Best Dressed Men From The Week That Was Feat. Tom Hiddleston, Tom Holland & Benedict Cumberbatch
The Best Dressed Men From The Week That Was Feat. Tom Hiddleston, Tom Holland & Benedict Cumberbatch

It’s been a stellar week in men’s fashion with some of the biggest names in the business rolling out for red carpet events and more.

Frontrunners Tom Hiddleston, Tom Holland & Benedict Cumberbatch deserve this week’s top mentions as they rolled onto the premiere of Avengers Infinity War in Seoul. Hiddleston opted for a striking three-piece suit in electric blue whilst Cumberbatch went down the marsala hue in a suede finish.

Young Tom Holland meanwhile kept things cool and casual with a Moncler overcoat worn over a white crew neck tee and black trousers. Remember men, do as Spidey does and always remember to keep those shoes polished.

The rest of the crowd features a diverse selection of guys in pared down suits like Antoni Porowski and Dale Moss, whilst old timers like Tim Gunn looked after the more traditional end of suiting.

Jason Donovan was a sole flyer of the tux whilst guys like Ruen showed us how to dress relaxed without looking like a drunk.

That’s a wrap for another week in best dressed.

Ryan Reynolds Savagely Trolls Hugh Jackman On His Wedding Anniversary
Ryan Reynolds Savagely Trolls Hugh Jackman On His Wedding Anniversary

The love/hate bromance between two of Marvel’s biggest stars continues to unfold.

Hugh Jackman posted a heart-felt tribute to his wife, Deborra-Lee Furness, on Twitter yesterday to celebrate their 22nd anniversary.

The messages of genuine support from internet users was short-lived though with Ryan Reynolds quickly jumping on the tweet to give his own two cents on the Wolverine actor’s relationship.

Ryan Reynolds is no stranger to trolling his X-Men co-star, having interviewed him for another film premiere in which he accused Jackman of having an affair with his wife, Blake Lively. And even Lively isn’t off limits when it comes to taking the piss.

Reynolds recently responded to a tabloid claiming that his relationship with his wife was on the rocks. Reynolds’ response?

Talk about being at the top of your game. Not bad for a guy who earned his chops from Sabrina the Teenage Witch.

Banks Are Finally Using Blockchain Technology So You Can Transfer Money To Your Mates
Banks Are Finally Using Blockchain Technology So You Can Transfer Money To Your Mates

If you’ve ever wanted to empty your bank account with just a couple of clicks (and send it all overseas), you’re in luck.

Santander, a Spanish mega-bank, has just announced the launch of an international payment app for retail customers, which will use xCurrent, a blockchain technology owned by Ripple—one of Bitcoin’s main competitors.

In a statement yesterday, Santander said that this first-of-a-kind app makes them the, “First bank to roll out a blockchain-based international payments service to retail customers in multiple countries simultaneously.”

RELATED: Bitcoin Expert Warns Banks Will Enter The Crypto Market And Cause Massive Price Surge

This a smart choice by Santander because Ripple is seen as one of the most legitimate crypto-currencies (it’s less decentralised than the others—and is backed by some of the world’s major financial institutions). The move will also benefit Ripple; improving its public perception, increasing investor confidence and making it more likely to be accepted by consumers. Potentially, it might even become a mainstream form of financial transaction, beating Bitcoin to the finish-line.

The app, called One Pay FX, will be available initially in Spain, the United Kingdom, Brazil and Poland before being rolled-out to other countries later in the year. The blockchain software xCurrent will be used to power end-to-end tracking of payments and instant settlements around the world.

Transfers to Europe can now be made on the same day, and Santander’s next aim is to, “Deliver instant transfers across several markets by the summer,” Botin—the executive chairman—said in a statement, adding, “Our goal is to help the thousands of people who use international payments services every day, and we will be adding more currencies and destinations in the coming months.”

'On The Go' Grooming Products That Will Ensure You're Never Caught Out
'On The Go' Grooming Products That Will Ensure You're Never Caught Out

It’s one thing to be well-dressed, good looking and worldly, but it’s another thing to always be well-groomed, clean and smelling like a man that gives a damn. All too often I go out after work or continue onto an after party and find gentlemen are less than fresh. Here are five personal tips to ensure you’re always looking and smelling like a top shelf bastard.

RELATED: An Essential Pre-Date Grooming Checklist

Keep a toothbrush (and toothpaste) at work

Kontextur VIKTOR Toothbrush

Sounds stupid but if you’re planning on going out after work then it’s wise to keep a fresh toothbrush and some toothpaste in your desk. It will save you from greeting people with coffee/tuna breath and being known as ‘dragon’ at after work functions. Mints will do the same job, but clean teeth and breath is a double win. Duck off to the bathroom, brush and you’re done. Note: Also useful if you forget to brush your teeth before work.

After shave in your car

Tom Ford Noir

There’s nothing better than putting on your favourite aftershave before you go out. It’s a subtle way of saying ‘Hello ladies’—and letting people know you have discerning tastes when it comes to fragrances. Before your favourite bottle of Oud or CDG2 runs out, put the last of the bottle in your car and keep it on hand as an emergency. You’ll be thankful when you’ve been out all day or night. FYI: go for small 50ml bottles.

A small bottle of deodorant

Aesop Deoderant

Body odour is not a good thing. Especially after you’re been in the boardroom presenting like a god damn champion all day. Do the right thing and get yourself a 7-Eleven sized bottle of low fragrance deodorant (roll or spray) and keep it in your work desk or car. Apply after work or during the day when the going gets tough.

A small set of fingernail clippers

Nail clippers

Not the most obvious one but long toe or fingernails scream ‘Don’t give me your phone number’. These are not meant to be kept in your pocket, rather in the car, man purse or desk at work. Before you head out give them a quick check and once over to ensure the ladies say ‘Oh look at your and your handsome finger nails’. They will, trust me.

Travel friendly hair product kit

Patricks Hair Product

Like it or not, your hair product does begin to lose its shape over the course of a day. To ensure your quiff is at its very best keep some high quality product on hand in a small container. We recommend finding products less than 100ml, that way it won’t get pinched if you’re flying with it.

TAG Heuer Monaco Gulf Special Edition 50th Anniversary

TAG Heuer’s iconic Monaco Chronograph is aiming to recapture the hearts of racing fans with its latest Monaco Gulf Special Edition 50th Anniversary.

Santos de Cartier

Cartier surprised crowds in Geneva this year with a reintroduction of the French luxury house’s most iconic flying watch: the Santos de Cartier.

The most defining element of the watch’s design is the square case which remains predominantly unchanged from the original timepiece of 1904.

The new one is lighter thanks to an approximate 9mm case thickness and a new rounded bezel which tapers seamlessly into the lugs to provide a much cleaner look and better feel on the wrist.

Four variations of the Santos de Cartier have been released including the all stainless steel, stainless steel and yellow gold, pink gold and yellow gold variants. These options come in two sizes with the medium sitting at 35.1mm wide and the large at 39.8mm wide.

Another appealing feature of the timepiece is its QuickSwitch and SmartLink system which makes for quick and easy strap changes at the push of a button – no fidgety tools required.

Why we love it: Interchangeable straps and bracelets is the a game changer for luxury watches

OMEGA Seamaster Olympic Games Collection

Inspired by the iconic Rings of the Olympic Games is this stylish and minimalist offering from OMEGA.

The Seamaster Olympic Games Collection draws its design cues from OMEGA’s timekeeping stopwatches of the past. This translates effortlessly into a domed black and white dial with sporty hands, a date window and a highly legible minute track tracing the inner-circumference.

The blue version is our pick of the crop and it comes in a 39.5mm stainless steel case paired to a blue micro-perforated leather strap. There’s also a blue pulse reader on the dial which allows wearers to determine their pulse beats-per-minute – pretty cool addition.

Movement meanwhile is sorted with the Master Chronometer calibre 8800 which drives the hours, minutes, seconds and date function. It also bears the COSC certification to ensure the highest standards of precision timekeeping are met.

The piece comes backed with a 60 metre water resistance rating and a limited edition run of just 2,032 units.

Inside the piece is a 3285 movement which boasts a GMT function and a power reserve of 70 hours instead of the previous model’s 48 hours. Rolex has also gone through the trouble of getting the watch COSC Chronometer certified meaning accuracy is pretty much guaranteed.

Tudor GMT Black Bay

Ask and you shall receive. Whilst Rolex unveiled what was arguably the most talked about watch at this year’s Baselworld, its five-digit price tag is still a deterrent for some fans of the coveted ‘Pepsi’ design.

Enter sister company, Tudor. The Swiss watchmaker unveiled their own GMT Black Bay at the show alongside Rolex’s GMT-Master II and the result is quite stunning.

Three striking bracelets to choose from, a practical 41mm stainless steel case and a price tag that undercuts the Rolex by less than half the price is a winner in anyone’s book. Most importantly though, it still looks the part thanks to a well thought out blue print.

Why we love it: Because you can get this if you can’t afford the one above

Luminor Due 3 Days Automatic Acciaio PAM00904

An age of refinement has finally heralded in a new chapter of the illustrious Panerai story.

One of the key elements of the latest Luminor Due collection is a redesigned case which now sees a 10.5 – 10.7mm thickness – a significant downsizing from the 15.65mm thickness of the original 1950 Luminor.

The merger of quintessential Italian design and modern Swiss watchmaking however remains, bringing with it three versions of the the Luminor Due: a 38mm, 42mm or 45mm diameter case.

Depending on the model and size, the Luminor Due collection houses a choice of a hand-wound mechanical or automatic movements all boasting 72 hours of power reserve – hence the 3 days designation.

Joining IWC Schaffhausen’s Jubilee celebration this year was a stunning trio in the form of the limited edition Tribute to Pallweber wristwatches complete with jumping numerals.

Arguably one of IWC’s most innovative showings to date, this timepiece incorporates a digital hours and minutes display in a wristwatch for the very first time. Tradition wasn’t lost through innovation though as IWC utilised this form of time/date display on their pocket watches way back in 1884.

Today the forgotten dial design has been revived for the brand’s anniversary alongside an equally pioneering movement. The IWC-manufactured 94200 calibre features cutting edge engineering that merges intricate mechanics with a sophisticated digital display complete with a high 60-hour power reserve.

Why we love it: Best value watch of 2018

Price: $3,950

Ulysse Nardin Freak Vision

Ulysse Nardin stunned the crowds at this year’s SIHH in Geneva with the release of the Freak Vision, the Swiss watchmaker’s first ever automatic timepiece from the Freak collection which tells the time without conventional hands.

The new Freak Vision utilises the latest complication which was showcased in Ulysse Nardin’s InnoVision 2 concept watch at SIHH 2017.

In production form for the Freak Vision, this culminates in the innovative Grinder Automatic Winding System.

A super-light silicium balance wheel with nickel mass elements and stabilising micro-blades now graces the movement along with a new case design made thinner via a box-domed crystal. The hours and minutes functions meanwhile are determined by the rotation of the movement. It’s a complex movement which does away with the conventional crown.

Besides this rather spectacular looking in-house movement which can be seen from the caseback, the timepiece features a 50 hour power reserve, 30 metres water resistance and a big 45mm platinum case. The watch comes with a leather-like rubber strap with titanium folding buckle.

Be warned though, with so much R&D and innovation crammed into the Freak Vision, pricing isn’t for the faint of heart.

Why we love it: Absurdly awesome because it breaks all the rules and looks amazing in blue.

Random Hook-Ups Could Be The Secret To Travelling The World For Free
Random Hook-Ups Could Be The Secret To Travelling The World For Free

If you’re looking to extend your travels, the answer could be Tinder. And to avoid coming off as a flog obsessed with social media attention and sex, we’re going to teach you how to focus on the purer aspect: money.

Even if you stay in dirt-cheap hostels, long term travel is expensive. In popular locations during high season the bare minimum is about $35 a night, and travelling off peak still adds up due to the whole ‘not working’ thing. So why not take advantage of the Tinder passport (a $10 per month, premium feature), which allows you to set location (and organise hook-ups) ahead of time?

While many of the guys who have gone viral trying it have been criticised for their attitudes towards women, this perception comes from arrogant messages they sent to their matches, rather than the fact they hooked-up a lot while travelling. When you think about it; there’s no ethical difference in using Tinder to travel for free and using it to get laid in your home-town.

RELATED: Tinder Is Making Big Money From Your Thirstiness

People use Tinder for all sorts of reasons: boredom, curiosity, to get over a breakup, to explore their sexuality, to meet new people—the list goes on. Is it really anyone else’s business if your particular reason is to extend your holiday? Few people are on Tinder to look for a serious relationship (if you’re in this minority isn’t it up to you to make that clear?), so why does using the app in creative ways land you with a fat grey stamp (in most people’s eyes) on your moral passport?

As long as you don’t pretend you want a relationship, there’s no need to tell your match you wouldn’t be having sex with them if you weren’t a cheapskate. They find you attractive (for whatever reason), you find them attractive (or at least enough so that you swiped right), and you now both will get an insight into another human being’s sex face culture and personality.

To those who worry this is superficial: it’s actually the best way to find authentic relationships. On a serious date you never know whether the other person just wants to be in a relationship for the sake of it, is just going through the motions or is simply too polite to tell you they kind of hate you.

The lack of strings in a Tinder hookup (especially one where you are scheduled to leave the country the next day) makes it easier to see if the connection is real, and in the unlikely event a relationship springs, you can be sure you’re in it for the right reasons.

Remember Jason Donovan? He's Still Alive & Looking Great In A Tux

If you’re not a byproduct of the 70s or 80s then it’s likely you’ll have no clue who Jason Donovan is.

Shotgun history lesson: Donovan is an Australian actor and singer who rose to prominence in the 80s during his years in the soap show, Neighbours. This fame eventually allowed him to tap into the English market as a singer before culminating in four UK No. 1 singles, one of which was with Neighbours co-star Kylie Minogue.

Fast forward a good 30 years and Donovan is still alive and well, kicking it to a killer tux at the Olivier Awards in London this week.

The 49-year-old entertainer may have lost some of his youthful good looks but he more than makes up for it with the right fashion sense. On the red carpet Donovan opted for a classic black tux with subtle detailing on the lapel.

It’s discreet enough to remain classic without being ultra conservative. And as usual, fitment is the key winner here.

Lacking Muscles? You Need To Eat Like This If You Want To Look Like Tim Robards
Lacking Muscles? You Need To Eat Like This If You Want To Look Like Tim Robards

Food is the glorious creation that keeps every living organism on this sphere kicking. Somewhere along the line though it became less of a nutritional necessity and more of a past time amongst Insta-foodies and glutton fiends.

Washboard abs, meet sugar, carbs and his best mate, fat. With so many temptations hiding around every corner it can be difficult for people to keep in shape in these days, but not impossible. Alongside regular training, a muscle building mission also demands a close eye on what goes into the gut.

We hit up one of Australia’s fittest bodies to find out exactly what he does (and doesn’t) eat to achieve and maintain the the physique of the classic hunter-gatherer. You’ll be surprised – the dieting part isn’t as hardcore as you think.

Mindset Comes First

A post shared by Dr Tim Robards (@mrtimrobards) on

Whilst Tim Robards is renowned for his rippling abs and notable guns splashed across television screens, it’s off camera that he reveals how important a balanced diet is in achieving his signature physique.

Robards focuses on the intrinsic aspects of a healthy mind to achieve his healthy body. In simpler terms, that means he doesn’t diet and go through extreme cutting phases like most fads out there.

“I don’t do things to look a certain way even though I do like to look good. It’s a mixture of feeling good and looking good to be at my best all the time.”

According to Robards, having an athlete’s mindset is the most important thing to inherit as men age.

“An athlete doesn’t do things just to look a certain way. They do things when they want performance out of their body, whether it’s performance in the office or performance to lift.

There are clear do’s and don’ts when it comes to setting up a proper mindset before food prep.

Don’t:

  • Make it about short term goals like getting ripped for summer then letting yourself go in winter
  • Overcomplicate things when it comes to measuring intake right down to the gram (like protein intake)

Do:

  • Focus on eating real wholesome foods that come straight from nature as much as possible
  • Stick to natural foods as the more of this you eat, the less room there is for discretionary things like junk food

Food Prep & Intake

A post shared by Dr Tim Robards (@mrtimrobards) on

Balance is something Robards prides himself on and this flows on from his TRM 7-2-1 nutrition plan which correlates to consuming 70% super clean foods, 20% sensible foods and 10%of whatever your stomach desires at all times.

Robards is currently partaking in intermittent fasting where he only consumes within an 8-hour window everyday. This is what his daily food consumption looks like.

12-1pm: First meal of the day

“Breakfast doesn’t need to mean it’s in the morning. All it means is you’re breaking your fast. We all fast when we sleep.”

  • Bulletproof coffee with alternating milk from plant based milk to macadamia to soy to normal milk
  • Robards also adds butter or brain octane oil (MCT oil) to it occasionally
  • Various cafe foods but usually a breakfast bowl with greens, vegetables, cemented vegetables, quinoa or different types of grains
  • Alternatives include salmon, poached eggs, sour dough bread and avocado

3pm: Snacking

“Some days if I’m feeling it, I’ll break the fasting. I’m not super strict.”

  • Drink lots of water, eat nuts during the day supplemented with a bit of fruit

Late afternoon: Second meal of the day

“Sometimes I go two meals a day and that’s it.”

  • Chicken salad

Evening: Last meal of the day

“I’m trying to have more fish these days. There is an overthinking of needing to have so much protein in our diet from meat. I’m looking for other protein sources now like tofu.”

  • More fish, salad, vegetables
  • If eating out, opt for the 20% ‘sensible food’ category and go for a nice tasting pasta

Supper: A sometimes dessert

“If I’m out at a restaurant I’ll usually share the dessert.”

  • Bit of yogurt or fruit
  • Tea

Portion Sizing & Food Variations

A post shared by Dr Tim Robards (@mrtimrobards) on

Robards has a simple method to control his food portions. By simply using his hands, he can determine how much food intake is enough.

  • Vegetable intake is measured by placing two open hands together like you’re holding a bowl; that’s how much salads I try and get in
  • Protein is about the size and thickness of my palm – that’s most meals under the steak, tofu and eggs category
  • Fat is measured using the three finger trick. If you put your three fingers together, that’s your allowable fat intake

Food variations are also acceptable under Robards’s personal diet.

  • The 7-2-1 food guide states that 70% is clean wholefood straight from nature whilst 20% is sensible food – traditional processed food like bread
  • If Robards wants something like spaghetti bolognese, he’ll halve the pasta, add zucchini and vegetables on the side to turn a meat and pasta dish into a more sensible meal
  • When it comes to the 10% relaxed food, if there’s birthday cake Robards is eating it

“The hard part is getting 70% of that whole food from nature – that doesn’t happen most times and a lot of people don’t get that. They’ll be lucky to get 10% or 20%,” explains Robards.

He avoids foods like:

  • Most seed oils like canola and sunflower seed as they are cheaper, inferior and create bad cells that break down and oxidise quicker to age you quicker

He limits but doesn’t rule out foods like:

  • Sugars, refined foods, processed food

What About The Bodybuilder’s Diet?

Robards isn’t a personal fan of the bodybuilder’s diet.

“What I find with bodybuilders is their diet goes up and down because their philosophy isn’t right,” he says.

“Once you lose that drive, and it’s usually an ego drive, you’ve done your competition, you fatten up again. It’s not a consistent driver.”

Results & Timing

Robards is an advocate of creating healthy habits for the long term rather than getting ripped for the short term.

If someone is looking to see a rapid shift in their body shape though, he suggests treating the 70% portion of his 7-2-1 program as a detox phase rather than a weight loss silver bullet.

It’s extremely hard as you’ll be eating super clean wholesome natural foods for 100% of the time rather than the 70%, but the results should show if you’re committed.

“Do the 70% for a month straight – go hard. You’re just detoxifying all the processed crap out of your diet that doesn’t come naturally.”

“If you’ve been eating a lot of crap, and change something, something will shift.”

“The 7-2-1 food guide is a hell of a lot more sustainable for most people. You can do that for the rest of your life.”
