Why This ‘A380 Killer’ Was Never Built (Thank God)
Why This ‘A380 Killer’ Was Never Built (Thank God)

One of the most beloved passenger planes of modern times – the A380 – is being phased out by many airlines, due to its hefty running costs in this point-to-point travel age, as well as due to the fact that COVID-19 has forced many airlines to look at their balance sheets with ruthless eyes. The result? A few airlines, like Emirates and Singapore Airlines, are keeping the A380, which is profitable for them because they run a lot of long haul flights (with a large number of customers), but most are scrapping it in favour for smaller, ultra fuel-efficient fleets. But did you know the A380 could have been stymied before it even got started? Or at least, it could have had a lot more competition in the early days. How so? Well, it was recently brought to our attention (via Simple Flying) that Lockheed Martin almost brought out a bigger plane than the A380 in the mid 1990s, before the A380 was even a twinkle in its designers eyes. This plane was was so big and heavy it would have crushed most runways at the time. In fact, it was thought (by some of the Lockheed boffins) they might create an aircraft that could fit up to 950 (950!) customers. To put this into perspective, the Airbus A380 is certified for up to 868 passengers (538 on the main deck and 330 on the upper), however it would be extremely rare for this number of passengers to actually be flown, with business and premium economy meaning that usually an Airbus A380 will contain 544 passengers. So, how come there aren’t huge old Lockheed planes flying thousands of people at a time from Sydney to London? First, a little background. Lockheed Martin’s super transport plane, which would have been bigger than a 747, and would have carried more passengers than an A380 (and would have dominated the skies), was designed in 1996.The idea behind the plane (which was part of a program called “large subsonic transport”) was to solve the problem of there being limited (and increasingly expensive) landing spots at airports (and cater to rising demand for air travel in places like China), as well as to be the next military aircraft for the US Air Force, which had a lot of fleets approaching retirement age. The report for this would-be jet is now in the hands of NASA.For this reason, Lockheed was aiming to create a jet that could either be used to fit some 800 passengers, or alternatively be used as a freighter.According to Found & Explained, it was literally called the Lockheed Very Large Aeroplane. Also according to Found & Explained it had a takeoff weight of 1.4 million pounds and had four very powerful engines. The wingspan was 282 feet (with folding wingtips that brought it down to 211 feet of wingspan), and the length was 262ft.The passenger version would have had four aisles. In the design document a fairly major design flaw is also revealed however. That flaw? It had, compared to the A380 which came later (and the 747), quite a limited range. It’s range was just 3,200 nautical miles (5,900 kilometres). To put this into perspective, the Boeing 747 has a range of 7,730 nautical miles and the Airbus A380 can fly 8,000 nautical miles.

Interior sketch of the Lockheed Very Large Aeroplane. Image Credit: Lockheed Martin/NASA
So although the Lockheed Very Large Aeroplane could have flown the London to New York route (3008 nautical miles) it wouldn’t have been able to fly over the pacific without stopping in Hawaii. This would have meant it wouldn’t be very useful to carriers in the Middle East and Asia (like Qatar Airways, Emirates and Singapore Airlines). This wasn’t the reason the Very Large Aeroplane plan was scrapped though. In fact, initially Lockheed Martin thought they’d have a market for 280-370 of them. Each one was projected to cost US $200-300 million (a number which equates to about half a billion dollars in 2022).In the report, Lockheed Martin admitted they didn’t have the resources or technical expertise to build the plane, and said they would have to seek help from Boeing and Airbus to bring it to market. The total development cost was projected to be around (US) $18 billion. There were other problems too. It would be super noisy during takeoff and landing, and it would create an air vortex that would delay planes taking off or landing behind it.It would also (as happened a few years later with the A380) require all new gates to be built and new service vehicles to perform turnaround tasks. Additionally, it would take a long time to board passengers.Oh and – on top of that – it was predicted that, were they to be built, the Very Large Aeroplanes of this kind might have trouble getting FAA approval, because if they landed in the ocean in an accident, they would sink almost immediately. Also, being so wide, middle passengers would not be very close to the exits in any kind of emergency situation.Looking back, it was probably the right call for Lockheed Martin not to go ahead with the Very Large Aeroplane. With the A380 now in decline and with the aviation industry going through a crisis in 2001 (and 2020) the designers are probably glad they never went further.Further reasons some people are thanking god this would-have-been A380 killer never got built are “Ryanair would have found a way to pack in 1,300 passengers” (comment by Youtube user Beef Supreme on Found & Explained) and because of the horrendous amount of noise it would have produced.Read Next

The Dexter Reboot Was The Show’s Chance To Redeem Itself But It Failed Miserably
The Dexter Reboot Was The Show’s Chance To Redeem Itself But It Failed Miserably

Spoiler alert: the following article contains major spoilers for both Dexter and Dexter: New Blood

One of the most popular drama series of the 2000s, Dexter, which follows Miami forensics expert and serial killer, Dexter Morgan, became widely regarded as having the worst series finale of all time… yes, it’s even more hated than Lost’s infamous ending.

The show won a total of four Emmy’s during its eight-season run, and was beloved by both critics and fans alike; until, of course, the ending aired. The reasoning behind why so many loathed the finale was because it felt forced, rushed, and ultimately, anti-climatic.

After many seasons of following Dexter Morgan killing people he deemed as ‘bad’, using his knowledge as a forensics expert to evade the authorities, and struggling to be a better man for his family, fans spent literal years waiting for a satisfying conclusion.

Instead, the Dexter writers gave an almost non-ending; Dexter, played by Michael C. Hall, was never found out as the ‘Bay Harbor Butcher’ serial killer. And, despite faking his own death to start a new life, he surprisingly didn’t take his infant son with him. Therefore, Dexter was never punished for his crimes but also never really redeemed himself; an ending that was completely underwhelming.

Clyde Phillips, the series showrunner for seasons 1-4, which are hugely regarded as the best seasons of the show, originally wanted the series to end with Dexter’s death. But according to Vulture, the show’s network, Showtime wouldn’t allow the writers to kill off the titular character when it came to the final season. Dexter producer, John Goldwyn blamed this limitation as to why the finale was so disappointing.

Despite Dexter’s final episode leaving something to be desired, the television series was granted a chance to redeem itself. Phillips developed a mini-series, Dexter: New Blood, that would continue Dexter’s story and would see Hall reprise his role. The show premiered in November last year and was applauded for having the same charm, nuance, and interesting writing that made the original show so good.

Therefore, fans were highly anticipating the ending of Dexter: New Blood, as many had high hopes that it would undo the mistakes made in the original’s finale and would finally give audiences a satisfying end to Dexter’s story. And yet, the ending to Dexter: New Blood was somehow even more disappointing than the originals.

Phillips finally killed off Dexter; the ending he originally wanted for the character… but eight years later, it’s too little too late. Especially considering, Phillips and other Dexter cast & crew members made it public knowledge in 2013 that that was how the original series should have ended. Therefore, this ‘shocking’ ending was rather predictable.

The ending was also unsatisfying for many other reasons; for example, Dexter’s death cements that there won’t be any more seasons of Dexter: New Blood. At least, there won’t be more seasons with Dexter in them, as Phillips teased to Deadline that a season 2 could happen but would centre around Dexter’s son, Harrison instead.

Another reason the ending is gaining negative reviews is poor writing; the whole season of Dexter: New Blood showed Harrison having similar dark tendencies to his father as well as emotionally bonding to him… character development which was abruptly abandoned in the last episode when Harrison kills his father without an ounce of hesitation.

Another example is that in the original series, Dexter evaded Miami Metro and Agent Lundy for years and yet, in Dexter: New Blood, he was quickly found out by his girlfriend, Angela Bishop, a small-town detective, who is shown to be inept as she hasn’t been able to solve a missing girls case for years.

Plus, Bishop uses simple things like Google and a podcast to discover that Dexter is the Bay Harbor Butcher and makes the revelation in a very short amount of time… which seems trivial and simply doesn’t do justice to Dexter’s character.

The show also teased that Dexter and Batista would meet once again. Batista in the original series was a detective who worked with Dexter and considered him a close friend but never learned that Dexter was the serial killer dubbed the Bay Harbor Butcher or that he faked his own death. Therefore, when Batista made an appearance in Dexter: New Blood, it seemed that he would finally learn the truth and fans were desperate to see Batista confront Dexter on screen.

However, this interaction never happens in the finale and, now, will never happen because Dexter was killed off. Plus, Batista’s plotline wasn’t given a real conclusion in the finale either, as he says he’ll come to Iron Lake but his arrival is never shown, something that many are calling sloppy and displeasing.

Overall, it seems that perhaps Dexter: New Blood should have never been made as it failed to fix the original series’ inadequate ending and, arguably, had an even worse ending. Although, the amusing uproar on Twitter almost makes up for it. Here are our favourite Twitter reactions to Dexter: New Blood’s poor final episode:

Conor McGregor Gets In Touch With His Feminine Side With Latest Outfit

Conor McGregor have made his fortune in the crudest of ways – beating other men to a pulp in the octagon – but when it comes to what he wears, he’s got a surprisingly considered approach. From crisp yet casual ‘Canadian tuxedo’ fits to combining his passion for expensive tailored suits with his penchant for insults, the 33-year-old Irish MMA legend definitely has a passion for fashion, especially where luxury brands are considered. In particular, he loves the Italian brands, regularly stepping out in Dolce & Gabbana, Gucci and Prada. His latest Prada pickup is a little left-field, however. Posing in front of a mirror for Instagram yesterday at the pub he owns in Dublin, The Black Forge Inn, Conor showed off a rather feminine pink mohair sweater paired with a black cap, black skinny jeans, black Nike sneakers and a yellow gold Rolex Day-Date (ref. 228238-0004).It’s… Not what we’d normally expect from him.

Images: @thenotoriousmma / Rolex
Now there’s nothing wrong with wearing pink. Real men wear pink, actually. But the mohair is a bit much. We’re not sure if it’s more ‘grandma-core’ or ‘rich sorority girl’… The all-black accoutrements definitely make us think it’s the latter. He looks like he’s about to pick up an orange mocha frappucino. The Rolex doesn’t help either, although that’s not really his fault. 40mm is somewhat on the smaller side for watches these days but it’s not abnormally small; it’s just that McGregor (who’s bulked up massively in recent months) makes the AU$59,200 timepiece look like a woman’s watch.RELATED: Sylvester Stallone Shows Off Refreshingly Classic Rolex For The Big ManWhat’s more concerning is that it looks like Conor took this photo just after going to the little boy’s room. His belt is undone and he seems to be covering up his fly. Maybe after his recent bulking, his jeans don’t quite fit like they used to? We’ve just got so many questions…Check out the rest of Conor McGregor’s insane watch collection below.

McGregor’s beefier appearance has sparked rumours about the outspoken brawler’s future fight plans, with MMA writer Ariel Helwani suggesting that McGregor might be gearing up for a bout against social media star-come-boxer Jake Paul, telling DAZN it’s “the biggest fight to be made in combat sports right now whether people like it or hate it”.RELATED: The Awkward Truth About Jake Paul’s Watch CollectionOthers, such as fierce rival Dustin Poirier and ex-MMA fighter Chael Sonnen, have instead insinuated that McGregor has just let himself go after his loss to Poirier last year, where Poirier broke the Irishman’s leg. Or maybe they’re just jealous of his sweater…Read Next

Death On The Nile Release Date Australia, Cast, Trailer & Reviews

Get ready to embark on the  S.S. Karnak, as Death On The Nile — the sequel to The Murder On The Orient Express — is now available to stream in Australia. But before you do so, read all about the cast and plot and watch the trailer below.

Trailer

Where To Stream Death On The Nile In Australia

  • Disney+ – Prices start at $9.99/month

Cast & Crew

Just like the 2017 film adaptation of Murder on the Orient Express, Death On The Nile is directed by Kenneth Branagh, who also reprises his role as iconic Detective Hercule Poirot. Branagh is a five-time Academy Award nominee who has directed Thor, Cinderella, Hamlet and, most recently, Belfast.

Death On The Nile will also star Gal Gadot of Wonder Woman fame and Call Me By Your Name actor, Armie Hammer as newlyweds Linnet Ridgeway-Doyle and Simon Doyle. Tom Bateman, Annette Bening, Russell Brand, Rose Leslie, Ali Fazal, Emma Mackey and Letitia Wright, Dawn French and Jennifer Saunders also star in the film.

The Plot

Death On The Nile is based on the 1937 book of the same name by legendary author Agatha Christie and is one of her most famous works, deliciously centred around crime, jealousy, and betrayal.

Christie’s travels to Egypt inspired Death On The Nile, which picks up shortly after Murder On The Orient Express and follows Hercule Poirot, played by Branagh, whose vacation in Aswan is cut short when one of the passengers on the S.S Karnak is murdered. The glamorous river steamer excursion quickly turns into a terrifying search, in which Poirot must identify the killer before they strike again. The story is filled with wicked twists that will leave audiences guessing until the very last second.

What The Critics & Reviews Say

You may notice in the Death On The Nile trailer, that despite a prominent role, Armie Hammer is hardly featured. In fact, the most recent trailer seems to heavily focus on the film’s other stars, Branagh and Gadot; perhaps to negate Hammer’s presence in the movie in light of his recent controversy. Hammer’s fall from grace was fueled by numerous rape and abuse allegations made by several women, which surfaced in January 2021.

In June, Hammer checked into rehab and was dropped from his talent agency WME and numerous productions, including a rom-com alongside Jennifer Lopez and a Paramount series serving as a prequel to The Godfather in the wake of these allegations.

When the latest trailer for Death On The Nile dropped, it garnered plenty of criticism online from fans, with many taking to Twitter voicing their outrage on the decision not to recast Hammer.

Despite the criticism, Disney’s decision to keep Hammer in Death On The Nile may have been due to the numerous delays in the production due to the COVID-19 pandemic, and recasting and reshooting just might not have been a feasible option.

With so much controversy surrounding the film, it’s unsurprising that Death On The Nile received average reviews; it currently has an IMDb score of 6.3.

Australian Release Date

After six halts of production due to the COVID-19 pandemic, Death On The Nile was released in Australian cinemas on February 11 2022.

Ozark Season 4 Release Date Australia And Where To Stream
Ozark Season 4 Release Date Australia And Where To Stream

Spoiler alert: the following article contains spoilers for Ozark.

If you’ve been anxiously waiting to see what happens next to money-laundering Marty Byrde, played by Jason Bateman, and his family, you’re in luck. We finally know when the final episodes of the award-winning crime-thriller, Ozark will be able to stream.

Of course, being a Netflix Original, Ozark’s final episodes from Season 4 will be released onto the streaming giant, Netflix. Unlike previous seasons of Ozark, Season 4 contained a total of fourteen episodes as opposed to ten, and was split into two ‘parts’. Only the first seven episodes or ‘Part 1’ of Season 4 were released earlier this year in January, but now the remaining seven episodes or ‘Part 2’ will be released on Netflix tomorrow (April 29th)!

To celebrate, Netflix has released a sneak peek of Ozark Season 4 Part 2; the streaming service posted a short scene that shows Ruth meeting Killer Mike on their official Youtube account. You can watch the clip below:

To quickly refresh your memory, in a nutshell, Season 4 Part 1 of Ozark ended with FBI agent Maya Miller double-crossing both Omar Navarro and the Byrdes, Marty and Wendy, and has Navarro arrested. This really hindered the Byrdes as, over the course of Part 1, both Marty and Wendy jumped through multiple hoops to end their association with the cartel, and when Navarro accepted an off-the-record deal to keep running the cartel but report back to the FBI, they thought they’d be able to finally move back to Chicago. Wrong!

Season 4 Part 1 also introduced us to a new character, Javier, – Navarro’s nephew – who after Navarro’s arrest becomes the new cartel boss. Javier also killed Wyatt – Ruth’s cousin – and Darlene, and Ruth is now hell-bent on revenge against Javier.

Of course, many more plot points occurred over Ozark‘s Season 4 Part 1, but we highly recommend quickly binging it tonight before Part 2 drops; it is one of the best shows Netflix Australia has to offer. Alternatively, you can watch the official Season 4 Part 1 Recap Video below:

The ‘#1 Hack To Increase Your Energy,’ According To A Doctor
The ‘#1 Hack To Increase Your Energy,’ According To A Doctor

We don’t know if the ancient Spartans carefully prepared their lunch containers the day before marching off into battle, but we do know they sometimes went hungry. What’s this got to do with you? Well, if Hollywood is to be believed, Spartans – any many of our other ancestors, who had no choice but to move their bodies everyday, and occasionally go hungry – had naturally strong physiques and more energy than the garden variety office drone of 2022.

Though that’s quite a romantic way of looking at things (let’s be honest, our life expectancy is a lot longer now), there’s probably something to it.

On that note: if you want to score a little old school pizzaz for yourself, you might find the below chat between health hacker Dave Asprey and MD Amy Shah of interest, which was filmed during 2021, and recently posted by Asprey to Instagram (as part of a “best of” series).

Entitled “the #1 hack to increase your energy,” the video shows Asprey talking to Dr Shah, who has made it her mission to combine the best of old and new health knowledge and medicine.

In the video, Dr Shah recommends exercising in the morning sun while in a fasted state. She says: “two to three hours before bed – around sundown, maybe a little bit after sundown – stop eating, try to push through if you can or you have a tea or a coffee (or something without many calories), allow up to 40 calories as long as it’s not sugar and then you sleep.”

“Then you wake up [after having had] a good 8 hours and then you do a good fasted workout in the sunlight and that alone will fix so much of your energy, gut health, immune and hormone issues.”

Sounds pretty good. But does it add up? According to Healthline, it’s possible, but not a fully scientifically proven art.

First off, Healthline warns that working out in a fasted state can be risky because your state of low blood sugar could lead to lightheadedness, dizziness, shaking or even passing out, if you are not used to it, or if your constitution simply doesn’t agree with it (particularly if you are doing an intense workout).

However, Healthline says that “if you’re generally healthy,” it’s “probably fine” to do short or medium-length steady state fasted cardio sessions while fasting.

Healthline explains: “The idea behind fasted cardio is that if you fast overnight and work out first thing, your body is depleted of glucose — its main source of energy — and will instead use stored fat for fuel,” adding that there is mixed research on this benefit, with some studies strongly supporting the hy pothesis, and others finding that eating something before your workout can lead to enhanced performance.

Man working out in the gym. Image Credit: Getty Images

Losing weight is just one thing though (you might not want to lose weight, for one thing). What about boosting your energy, as claimed by Dr Shah? Healthline says fasted cardio has other benefits such as saving you time (both in terms of preparing a meal and digesting it).

Healthline also states: “If you prefer working out on an empty stomach, fasted cardio could be an effective option, especially if you have a sensitive stomach or feel more energetic without a meal before a workout.”

Fasted cardio also has a number of other implications which you might want to take into account before doing it regularly. Some studies have suggested it could hinder muscle building and workout performance. It’s also not recommended if you are a person who typically has low blood sugar, or if you are pregnant.

Eating the right foods when you do eat is crucial, too, as Dr Shah has pointed out on other occasions.

Looking elsewhere on the web, a 2020 study in the Open Access Journal Of Sports Medicine concluded: “The available data suggest that exercise in a fasting state decreases body weight, free fat mass and fat mass, although more controlled studies are needed for definitive recommendations to be made.”

“A moderate intensity exercise during fasting is recommended for the prevention of hypoglycemia. Training in the evening while fasting may be more effective in enhancing aerobic performance, compared to training in the morning. Athletes may wish to train in the fasting state in the pre-season as fasting increases the activity of fat-burning enzymes,” (Open Access Journal Of Sports Medicine).

“However, fasting can elicit negative effects on performance in some events, and hence modifications to the training schedules (eg fasting during the pre-season) may minimize such effects.”

As for working out in the sunlight, though you don’t want to get burnt, there is quite the body of literature showing that exposing yourself to non-harmful levels of natural light in the morning, soon after waking, can do wonders for your circadian rhythm.

There you have it. An exercise hack to ponder – and some interesting advice to sleep on.

Watchseries: Use It Without Getting Arrested Or Infected
Watchseries: Use It Without Getting Arrested Or Infected

Between your Netflix and Hulu subscriptions, your Amazon Prime membership, and the HBO Go login you borrowed off a mate, you thought you had all your bases covered.

Streaming television is easier now than ever, but even with so many options on your plate, shows occasionally slip through the cracks. That’s when you’ll be tempted to don whatever the modern-day, digital equivalent of an eye patch and a parrot is, and become a pirate.

First, the obvious warning: pirating television shows isn’t just unfair to their creators, it’s illegal. Almost no sites hosting free streaming content are doing so lawfully. There’s always a chance – however slight – that you could be caught and prosecuted.

But you’re a big boy, and though we don’t endorse illegal streaming, you’re going to make your own choices. Think of this as a techno version of the preteen sex talk: you probably shouldn’t be doing it, but if you do, here’s how to do it safely.

What To Consider

Start by making an informed choice about where you consume media. ‘Watch Series’ and other popular aggregators of streaming content are careful not to host the files themselves, and respond rapidly when requests to delete copyrighted material are made. That makes them less liable than the actual hosts, but it’s still plenty sketchy.

The hosts are definitely breaking the law, and by watching the copyrighted content, you may be too. Streaming sites are also minefields of pop-ups and malware, so you visit them at your own risk.

If that’s a road you’re willing to go down, then keep reading to learn how to use Watch Series and other streaming sites safely.

Before You Begin

There are steps to take before you ever set foot (or cursor) on a streaming site.

First, make sure your computer is equipped with some kind of antivirus software. You can never be 100% protected, but it’s better than being 0% protected (funnily enough, that was also part of your preteen sex talk).

Second, install an ad blocker. Using an ad blocker has multiple benefits, including protecting yourself from viruses, saving bandwidth, and faster page loading times. Streaming sites are chock-full of deceptive ads fishing for clicks. At best the cluttered pages are irritating; at worst, a misplaced click will end in a device infected with malware.

For further protection, you can use a proxy or VPN (virtual private network) to hide your IP address. It’s probably overkill for a light television piracy session, but if you’re concerned about anyone tracking your activities on the Web, it will help you breathe easier.

Navigate With Caution

If you’ve never seen a streaming media site before, you’re in for a jolt of overwhelm. The sheer volume of available content is staggering, and it isn’t always arranged in a user-friendly way.

The basic idea is simple: enter the show you’re looking for in the search bar or inspect the home page for something that catches your eye. The site may offer features like playlists and ratings to help you choose. Watch Series, for example, displays the most popular shows, the latest popular episodes, and the newest episodes added.

When you’ve settled on an episode, procede with caution. Clicking on the episode page will display a list of links from various domains. Some are more reputable than others, some may be fake, and the ranking is always changing. Your safest bet is to search online to see which domains users currently recommend.

Select the domain of your choice. If you’re given the option to “watch” or “download”, always select “watch”. Saving the files to your computer – if it’s even the right file in the first place – can download malware. More likely, in the Wild West of the Web, it’s not the episode of The Bachelor you were secretly hoping to watch. It’s a virus (one you may kind of deserve for your disappointing taste in reality television).

After clicking the link, you’ll be transferred to the host site where you’ll find the file ready to be streamed. If that doesn’t happen, or there’s anything else wrong with the link, you may find a “report link” option on the original site. Click it to notify the site of any issues.

Additional Safety Measures

A few more tips for navigating the aforementioned Wild West like the John Wayne of streaming:

  • Do not enter your credit card details anywhere. You should never need that information to view a link or register an account with a site.
  • Beware of ads disguised as play buttons or download buttons. They most likely link to malware or are the start of a phishing scam.
  • Be wary if you’re asked to download a plugin, player, or update. There’s a chance it’s real, but there’s a greater chance it’s not. Don’t take the risk. Choose another host.

Then again…

There’s always the option of taking no risk at all. Piracy was never as romantic as the movies make it sound, and things are looking mighty good over on Netflix right now.

Morbius Release Date Australia, Cast, Trailer & Reviews

Here’s everything you need to know about Morbius before you sink your teeth in.

Where To Watch

Currently, Morbius is available for rent or to purchase on Apple TV, Google Play, the Microsoft Store and YouTube.

Trailer

The Cast & Crew

Morbius is based on the Marvel comics of the same name and follows biochemist Michael Morbius as he’s turned into a ‘bloodsucker’. The titular character is played by Jared Leto, who stars alongside Matt Smith, Jared Harris, Adria Arjona, and Michael Keaton. Tyrese Gibson also appears in the film as Simon Stroud, an FBI Agent who hunts down Morbius. At the helm of Morbius is Swedish director Daniel Espinosa, who has directed other action-packed flicks, including Easy Money, Safe House and Child 44, but Morbius marks his first film in the superhero genre.

Matt Sazama & Burk Sharpless wrote the film’s script, and the score was composed by Jon Ekstrand, who has worked on Espinosa’s previous films.

The Plot

For those unfamiliar with the Marvel Comics, created by writer Roy Thomas and designed by penciler Gil Kane, Dr Michael Morbius first appeared in The Amazing Spider-Man #101 as a doctor suffering from a rare blood disease. Dr Michael Morbius creates a cure that comes at a terrifying cost and afflicts him with a form of vampirism.

He has superpowers in speed, strength, night vision, echolocation and is forced to digest fresh blood to sustain his life. The character of Dr Michael Morbius has gone on to appear throughout the Marvel Universe before landing his solo comic in the early nineties, in which he became one of Spider-Man’s greatest villains.

Essentially, the Morbius film shows the character’s origin story. Similar to Venom, in Morbius Dr Michael Morbius is not portrayed as a typical ‘villain’ per se; instead, he’s an anti-hero.

What The Critics And Reviews Say

You can read DMARGE’s review of Morbius here; although be warned, we weren’t too kind. And if you’re wondering how others felt about Morbius, it currently has a 5.2 IMDb score and a critic rating of 16% on Rotten Tomatoes.

‘The Very Best Life Advice From 20 Million People Online’
‘The Very Best Life Advice From 20 Million People Online’

Head to somewhere such as the idyllic coastal town of Byron Bay, Australia and you’ll mingle with people who see themselves as the second-coming of Gandhi. Either being able to speak from experience, from classes they’ve taken or books they’ve read, these people are full of words of wisdom and advice that – if you can get past the in-some-cases-pretentious-tinge – actually have merit.

But, not all of us do live in Byron Bay, yet we’re still perfect candidates to be inspired with some inspirational teachings and advice that could improve our lives just that teensy little bit. Enter: the following. One man last year took it upon himself to compile a bit of a bible of the best advice and life tips from around the world, and some really do stop and make you think.

That man? Chris Hladczuk. Chris took to Twitter to announce he had “crowdsourced the best [advice] from 20 million people on Reddit” – if you take a look at Chris’ Twitter feed, it’s immediately clear he’s a fan of inspirational teachings in general.

While it might be fair to say some induce a “and how will that improve my life?” response, others carry far greater merit. One of our favourites says, “If someone insults you during a meeting, pretend like you didn’t hear them the first time. Politely ask them to repeat themselves.”

“They’ll either repeat the insult and look rude or realise their mistake and apologise.”

Only an incredibly small minority of the population have a bad bone in them. The rest of us are simply triggered by factors such as stress, so when someone makes what initially seems to be a stupid comment in a meeting, we can act out without thinking. This piece of advice, therefore, should resonate with almost everyone, and we’re able to already imagine the response we would get if we were to ask our manager, or whoever made the insult, to repeat themselves.

Other pieces of advice to fall into Chris’ top 10 include “airplane mode hack” and looking at the day as a game of sport.

Airplane Mode Hack: “If you’re stuck on an annoying call, put your phone on airplane mode instead of hanging up. The other person sees ‘call failed’ instead of ‘call ended’.”

As for looking at the day as a sport’s game, this one comes from American author, Gretchen Rubin: “Instead of feeling that you lost the day after a bad morning, Reframe each day as 4 quarters: Morning, midday, afternoon, evening.”

“If you blow one quarter, just get back on track for the next one. Fail small, not big.”

Ok, so we perhaps wouldn’t put Chris, or these pieces of advice on a pedestal with the teachings of Simon Sinek or Ester Sorel, for example. But in terms of being easy to understand and broad enough to be applicable to a great number of people, they’re pretty damn good.
