Rooftop Bar Bans Patrons Who Don’t Meet Outrageous Sartorial Standards
Rooftop Bar Bans Patrons Who Don’t Meet Outrageous Sartorial Standards

In a blow to prematurely-balding men and excitable women everywhere, one popular Australian rooftop bar has implemented a strict new dress code, which bans (amongst other things), combovers, cargo-pants and “overt” hens parties.

Although it’s not unusual for ~establishments~ to implement a dress code (“no footy shirts, no thongs” etc.), Slims Rooftop, a sunny-side-up venue overlooking Sydney’s Hyde Park, has taken it to a whole new level, essentially prohibiting anyone that looks like they drink VB or like to have fun.

But they don’t stop there. In a bid to create maximum confusion, they have also banned “Cheap, ill-fitting suits,” leaving patrons with no idea as to whether they should dress up or down. Needless to say: if their polyester shirts didn’t chafe so bad, the Tarocash brigade would be up in arms.

Although publications like the Daily Mail have swallowed the line that it’s all “tongue in cheek”, when you look closely at the sign, it soon becomes obvious that Slims Rooftop is trying to smuggle a fascist dress code through customs, under the guise of humour. Take a look for yourself.

Sure: “No Big Granny Undies” is a right old laugh, but it’s only there to distract you from tyrannical policies like, “No Thongs After Sunset” and “No Sporting Team Jerseys” (give me a Lebron singlet over jeans and a button up, any day). And not to get side-tracked, but riddle me this. Who looks better: Neymar in a Lakers outfit…

That said, there are a few rules we can get behind, like no ‘d***heads, no couples dressed to match (ew), and no ‘creeping’. But the fact remains: Slims Rooftop may be the most Sydney venue in Sydney. But hey: draconian nightlife laws breed draconian times.

And it seems a substantial portion of Slims’ instagram followers are on board, making comments like, “Our kinda bar” and, “How good are the rules.” However, being instagram, it’s unclear how many of these comments are genuine, or if they are fawning in an aspirational, “I’ll scratch your back if you scratch mine,” type arrangement.

A user called @jamesjetsoften, for example commented, “SO. GOOD. And funny. Thanks, hope to visit later this month!” followed up by a love heart. But if @jamesjetsoften wasn’t trying to grow his own consultancy’s Instagram account, one wonders if he would be so cringe-worthy in his praise?

Thankfully, a minority saw through the ruse, pointing out: “You (Slims Rooftop) lost me at granny undies.” In the meantime, feel free to take your multipurpose sneakers, high-vis vests and Lebron kits elsewhere. With Sydney’s best burger joints being a damn fine place to start.

Millionaire. CEO. DJ. It reads like an Instagram fuccboi’s wet dream but this is no dream. This is real life and this is the 51-year-old Italian playboy known as Gianluca Vacchi.

And now that we have that introduction out of the way, we’re going to show you proof that even the most successful men in the world weren’t born that way.

Exhibit A: Vacchi’s recent Instagram post which shows what he used to look like (left) just a few years back to what he looks like now.

Now we get there’ll be cries of “pfft, money can buy anything!” from plastic surgery to a personal trainer, but some quick research will bring up responses from Vacchi claiming that only the latter is kind of true.

In a Daily Mail interview from 2017, Vacchi said:

“I have vitamin injections, that’s all. I am of course fighting against age, but age has two consequences: the physical one, which you can fight if you eat well and you train.”

“The one that is scarier is when you get old in your brain. I am always looking for change; it is change that is keeping me alive.”

And of his vices?

“I drink sometimes. I will smoke once a year with a coffee.”

And with those diplomatic responses we don’t doubt Vacchi’s legitimacy in living his best years in his fifties.

Need more proof? See Exhibit B below and ask yourself this: What’s your excuse?

And just incase you need a bit more motivation in realising that your age isn’t a factor, here’s a photo from 2008. Be like fine wine, friends.

Experts Are Predicting A Property Market Boom In Australia’s Most Unlikely Suburbs
Experts Are Predicting A Property Market Boom In Australia’s Most Unlikely Suburbs

When you think of a property boom, lavish coastal towns and sprawling urban metropolises come to mind. But as the Australian property market slides, experts have identified 15 property hotspots, many of which you’ll never have heard of, as smart investment opportunities.

And if this downtrend continues, which—according to property professionals—it will (at least for another two years), big-city property owners have reason to sweat and first-home buyers are justified in rubbing their shekels together with hope (if not glee). As for you? You’ll be in Timbuktu watching your bank balance swell (if you play your cards right, and if said experts are correct).

But where to buy? What suburbs are holding their value? How do you get maximum ‘metres squared’ (and proximity to the city) per buck? Of course, you want something within your price range, but you don’t want to buy a place that keeps on declining in value. This is where Effie Zahos comes in. Editor of Money Magazine, finance journalist and commentator, Effie recently dropped by Chanel 9’s Today Show to reveal the best-value Australian suburbs to buy in 2019, state by state.

Sure: Sydney’s northern beaches are nice, but are they still a good investment?

New South Wales

Queanbeyan

With a median price of $530,000, Queanbeyan, as Effie explains, although it’s right on the ACT border is, “Technically… in NSW: so first home owners get the grant.” It’s also quite close (a 20 minute drive) to Canberra’s CBD, and is one of the more affordable options out there, so it is seeing an uptick in first home buyers.

Rutherford

Hotspot number two is Rutherford, where $400,000 will get you a pad just 35k’s from Newcastle, which—according to Effie—had a great run last year (and which she expects to continue).

Orange

Although country towns have suffered in the property market decline, Orange, where you can buy a house for $395,000, is one of the areas in regional NSW that has recently done well. According to Effie, “Sales over the last twelve months have been about 7.5%.” Maybe it’s time to bite while orange is hot?

Victoria

Golden Square

Golden Square has a median house price of $325,000. A suburb of Bendigo, Golden Square gives you easy access to one of the finest collections of Victorian buildings of any inland city in Australia, as well as majestic theatres, banks and shopfronts, (originally financed by the gold rush). Also – it’s an hour and a half’s drive from Melbourne so if you work in the city it would be a long (but do-able) commute.

Sebastopol

Median price: $275,000. “Seeing great sales.”

Wangaratta

At $295, 000, Warangatta’s median house price undercuts Golden Square’s by $30,000. In addition, as revealed by Effie on Channel 9, “Its three year growth forecasts are ranging from about 15-20%; so they’re expecting good things to come out of that.

“Local economy good, regional area good, ripple effect good.”

Queensland

Kirwan

Median price: $300,000.

South Mackay

Median price: $295,000.

Wavell Height

Median price: $680,000.

Although she didn’t discuss each suburb in detail, Effie reckons that—despite the floods—Queensland is a good place to buy a house. “The good thing is,” she explains, “There’s a lot of infrastructure about to be dumped into Queensland—about 25 billion dollars—and we’re hoping these ones (suburbs) will be the star performers.”

Western Australia

Karrinyup

Median price: $800,000.

Spearwood

Median price: $470,000.

Joondalup

Median price: $510,000.

Although Effie warns you not to expect a lot from Perth as far as property growth is concerned, she still gave her top picks for the WA region, which are doing well thanks to their local economies: “Again a lot of it is the local economy and sales growth is coming out (of that). We’re coming from negative returns after three years, and we’re going to see some good returns—some of them up to 20% over (the next) three years,” she predicted.

South Australia

Enfield

According to Effie, Enfield is a beautiful little town, close to the port, which offers residents a double whammy of coastal lifestyle and jobs (or at least some kind of local economy). Median house price? $450,000.

Port Augusta

As Effie explains, Port Augusta could be a smart choice for investors. Why? “We’re looking at… $5 billion in energy being thrown there over the next few years. And with a median house price just $140,000, and rental yields around 8%, Effie says, “That’s a nice one to have a look into if you’re thinking of buying for investment.”

Ascot Park

Ascot Park has a higher median house price than Port Augusta, but even at $475,000, the theme remains the same: “Think small (regional centres) for big returns.” Effie also recommends you look at property as you would any other asset, because even though there are “doom and gloom” headlines there are also pockets of opportunity—Ascot Park being one of them.

More generally, she said that when looking for a place to buy, “It’s a case of finding value and understanding what infrastructure is going there, what job growth, what sales figures have happened, and (going) ‘hot-spotting’ (with) all that data. It’s a case of have a look; start your research there.”

Daniel Walsh, director of a real estate investment consultancy, offered a similar point of view, telling The New Daily, “Contrary to some people’s narrow viewpoint that Sydney and Melbourne are the only markets in Australia, there are myriad locations where investors can secure affordable property.” So think outside the box (and your city), if you can.

And it goes without saying (but for legal reasons we have to say it anyway): before buying any property, even if a region has made it onto a “hot spot” list, do your own research on the area, talk to consultants and your own network of experts, and make sure you weigh up your options (and the associated risks) carefully.

“I’m Not Your Therapist”: Woman’s ‘Boyfriend Checklist’ Sparks Mental Health Controversy
“I’m Not Your Therapist”: Woman’s ‘Boyfriend Checklist’ Sparks Mental Health Controversy

Is it ok to reject a Tinder-match on the basis of their mental health? How about avoiding the whole situation, by specifying it as a ‘deal breaker’ in your profile? While everyone agrees that individuals should have the freedom to date (or not) whoever they like, the internet community is split over the extent to which it is acceptable to pick and choose based on immutable characteristics. When it comes to physical preferences, the general consensus seems to be: date the best looking people you can attract. However, when it comes to mental health, people are less certain. For one woman whose ‘Boyfriend Checklist’ recently went viral, there is nothing wrong with looking for good mental health in a romantic partner. For others it’s naive, insulting and impossible to quantify. In any case, the 26 year old Melburnian included “mental health” in her list of desirable attributes for a boyfriend, which she recently went on channel 9’s Today Show to discuss. Amongst other things, these included: the ability to hold an intellectual conversation, being reliable, being good at dirty talk, not being a big drinker and having good physical and mental health.

“Everyone has certain qualities they desire in a partner, but one Melbourne woman has taken it to the next level.”
She then left a pile of these letters in a letter box on the side of a hiking trail, as she told channel 9, “To have a humorous and non conventional approach to dating… and also a bit of a social experiment as well.” Whether it’s funny we’ll leave up to you, but in terms of the “social experiment” side of it, she clearly succeeded, sparking a debate on the online forum, Reddit. While some took issue with the list itself: “This woman could do with some drink or drugs to chill the f*ck out, and actually present men with the option of entering a relationship that doesn’t sound like a meeting with the ATO,” most of the criticism was based on her stance on mental health.

“(I want) someone in good physical and mental health. I’m not your therapist. The relationship quickly becomes unsexy.”

This led many Reddit commenters to call her immature and hypocritical, with one asking, “If you meet someone who can possibly be the love of your life and they have bad mental health at that moment would you turn them down?”. Others skipped the thoughtfulness, going straight to memes: “Wants a committed long-term relationship; refuses to be supportive of a partner’s mental health.”And others were just plain pissed: “Calling poor mental health ‘unsexy’ is potentially the most vile commentary I’ve ever heard.” In response to this, during her channel 9 interview the woman clarified that by, “Good mental health,” she just meant, “Someone who’s not emotionally dependant.”While some Reddit commenters thought this was obvious (“The way I understood it is; don’t… depend on me for your happiness and mental stability”) and understood her point of view (“I can empathise with someone who just wants a well balanced person to move forward with… rather than… trying to rope someone back to normality”), others said the way she expressed it was counter productive.

“Perhaps some of the ‘criteria’ aren’t far out the realm of what many people reasonably look for in relationships (whether they explicitly articulate them or not)… I just think that relationships are inherently more nuanced than compiling a simplified and rather abrasively worded list of idealised traits you want in a partner.”

Post Malone Reveals His Sneaky Secret To Appearing Taller
Post Malone Reveals His Sneaky Secret To Appearing Taller

Let’s get this out of the way first. At 1.84m (a bit over 6-foot) Post Malone isn’t exactly short, so why on Earth he’d be rocking Cuban heeled shoes is anyone’s guess.

Nonetheless the 23-year-old American rapper loves a good pair of ‘man heels’ and during his latest sighting at the Super Bowl Music Fest at State Farm Arena he was wearing a heavily polished pair of black leather Cubans which would have added a decent five centimetres to his height.

Short man crisis – averted.

Whilst we’re on the topic of Malone’s wardrobe choice, it’s safe to say that the man has been on an upward style trajectory since early 2018. His personal taste can be considered eclectic with a touch of luxury which he often pulls off quite well.

For his latest look Malone paired the aforementioned Cuban heels with a pared down pinstripe salmon suit. The unique looking suit was worn over a grey turtle neck and finished off with a matching coat belt to give the whole look a more leisurely aesthetic without compromising on polish.

So you want to look taller? Do as Malone does and follow the way of the Cuban. Or just read our guide below.

Scientists Discover The Truth About Your Gym Gains & Muscle Memory
Scientists Discover The Truth About Your Gym Gains & Muscle Memory

Use it or lose it. It’s a common saying thrown around in today’s fitness circles. The message pertains to the fact that if you don’t use your muscles, they’ll shrink and you’ll lose them. New scientific findings however indicate that this isn’t entirely true and a more accurate depiction would be –  “Use it or lose it – until you use it again”.Whilst most exercise psychologists agree that muscle memory is real, it’s the study of how these ‘memories’ are stored in the body that led scientists to realising the latest benefits of weight training and steroid use (we’re not kidding) to prevent frailty during old age.It all gets a bit scientific but bear with us.In the past scientists believed that the ‘use it or lose it’ concept meant that the nuclei, the cell control centres that build and maintain muscle fibres, would also be lost due to inactivity. The latest findings from Frontiers in Physiology suggest that this isn’t the case.Their research revealed that the nuclei gained whilst training would still persist even when a body’s muscle cells shrunk due to a lack of use or natural break down over time. These left over nuclei – called ‘myonuclei’ – in actual fact encourage increased growth at a faster rate once the muscles are retrained.Fundamentally the discovery suggests that humans can “bank” muscle growth potential during our teenage years in order to prevent frailty at an older age. It’s a finding which also suggests that athletes who have taken steroids to fast track their muscle growth in the past may go undetected in the future after they’ve stopped. That’s because the muscles have already ‘banked’ the extra growth and can be rewoken later on.“Anabolic steroids produce a permanent increase in users’ capacity for muscle development. In keeping with this, studies show that mice given testosterone acquire new myonuclei that persist long after the steroid use ends,” wrote the study. As such, the study even went as far as concluding that there should be frequent drugs testing for competitive athletes alongside permanent life bans for anyone caught using steroids since the drug can benefit the athlete long after they’ve stopped.Still keen to know the actual science behind this? Read on.The biggest cells in the human body can be found in the muscles which are fused closely together. This special type of tissue which consists of closely fused cells that act almost as a single cell is called the syncytium.Author of the journal Lawrence Schwartz, who is also the Professor of Biology at the University of Massachusetts, says that “muscle growth is accompanied by the addition of new nuclei from stem cells to help meet the enhanced synthetic demands of larger muscle cells”.“This led to the assumption that a given nucleus controls a defined volume of cytoplasm – so that when a muscle shrinks or ‘atrophies’ due to disuse or disease, the number of myonuclei decreases.”The latest findings suggest that the muscle syncytium can gain nuclei, but never actually loses them.“Two independent studies – one in rodents and the other in insects – have demonstrated that nuclei are not lost from atrophying muscle fibres, and even remain after muscle death has been initiated,” reads the study. In essence, the study indicates that once a nucleus has been acquired by a muscle fibre, it will most likely belong to the muscle syncytium for life.Schwartz believes he has a logical answer to this.“Muscles get damaged during extreme exercise, and often have to weather changes in food availability and other environmental factors that lead to atrophy (cell degeneration). They wouldn’t last very long giving up their nuclei in response to every one of these insults.”Thus, the conclusion that retaining myonuclei in the body can enable muscle size and strength to recover more quickly even after a period of non-activity. This in effect explains the phenomenon of ‘muscle memory’.“It is well documented in the field of exercise physiology that it is far easier to reacquire a certain level of muscle fitness through exercise than it was to achieve it the first place, even if there has been a long intervening period of detraining. In other word, the phrase ‘use it or lose it’ is might be more accurately articulated as ‘use it or lose it, until you work at it again’.”The take away message is simple. Schwartz’s research emphasises the importance of exercise during our younger years of adolescence. During this time our muscle growth is enhanced with hormones, nutrition and a healthy amount of stem cells which makes it the perfect time for the body to “bank” myonuclei to be re-activated at an older age.Not in your adolescence anymore? Neither. But here’s how to retain your muscle mass as it begins to deteriorate in your 30s.

Bomber Jackets Are The Secret To Looking Sophisticatedly Cool; Here’s How To Wear It
Bomber Jackets Are The Secret To Looking Sophisticatedly Cool; Here’s How To Wear It

The humble bomber jacket has come a long way since its military origins, moving from the literal runway to a more fashion oriented one.

Once worn almost exclusively by fighter pilots, this wardrobe staple has since been adopted by every man and his dog, whether it be British punk rockers or pop-teen heart throbs.

However, much in the same way that its wearers have changed, so too has the style of the jacket itself. From unlined cotton iterations to high end, fine leather Varsity versions, the bomber never fails to reinvent itself season after season.

With so much choice, it helps to have a definitive guide on how to wear it and when. Here, we explain how to capitalise on every look from semi-formal through to street.

Bomber Jacket With Jeans

Love him or loathe him, Scott ‘The Lord’ Disick knows how to wear a bomber and jeans like no one else. His secret? Recognising that a bomber jacket is the equivalent of a party jacket when it comes to a night out. The perfect compromise between casual and looking smart. In one fell swoop, it can seamlessly take a crew neck tee and slim leg jeans to the next level – and probably get you past the door staff too.

But before you go and buy just any bomber jacket, there are a few pointers to consider. As with most things, not all bombers are created equal. If you’re using one to stand out from the riff raff, quality material and fit are non-negotiables. Satin bombers, for example, add an element of luxe and also provide an important counter balance to more everyday textures like cotton and denim. And leather bomber jackets take premium to a whole new level.

When it comes to fit, you want to make sure that it hits right at your waist and the sleeves are slim, otherwise you risk looking boxy and having an 80s fashion hangover.

Bomber Jacket With Trousers

Coming from the more formal school of bombers, we’re firm believers in them being a valid alternative to the traditional blazer. Paired with slim leg trousers that are cropped just on the ankle, it gives an otherwise classic look a touch of street cred.

But be warned. When pairing a bomber with proper wool trousers, there’s a risk of making yourself look top heavy if you whack on a puffy Nylon iteration. Sticking with darker colours and higher end finishes – as per the gents pictured – will counter this and also ensure that you’re looking age appropriate. Suede and cashmere are both great pairings that work just as well in the office as they do at the bar.

If you’re hunting down a stockist, the likes of Suitupply have some great options that won’t set you back a small fortune.

Bomber Jacket With Shirt

For some, the thought of a bomber jacket with anything other than a crew neck tee shirt is near impossible. And granted, the proliferation of styles with an elasticised, scooped collar lend themselves to being worn this way. But why do what everyone else is doing when you could do something better?

If anything, there’s a certain unexpectedness that comes with seeing such a casual jacket with a collared shirt. Take these gents above as examples. The addition of a coloured bomber can lend a relaxed cool to an otherwise staid shirt and tie combo.

Contrast is key here, and it pays to look for colours and fabrics that play off each other.

Bomber Jacket With T-Shirt

Kanye. Raf Simons. Need we say more? Kanye’s adoption of the bomber sparked a true renaissance of the jacket in its most utilitarian form. And for good reason. This hip-hop artist-cum-fashion designer knows his way around normcore dressing like no one else.

Pairing a graphic tee with jeans may seem passé, but put a bomber on over the top and it gives the look a whole new lease on life. More than that, it represents a certain nonchalance and street cred that most gents can only dream of.

But how to dress like Kanye when you’re, well, not, is no mean feat. If this is your first foray, a basic, neutral base is key. A well-cut white, black or grey tee will serve you well and is worth paying for.

Try Bassike or Cos for long lasting classics. What you layer on top all comes down to you though. Have fun with hardware details and experiment with colourful linings.

Bomber Jacket With A Hat

The baseball cap and bomber. Nothing hides a night on the tiles quite so well, or quite so stylishly. This is a go to for weekend brunch or a long haul flight and proves a dynamite combo when pulled off right.

While basic, there are a few ground rules to abide by. First and foremost, if you’re wearing a cap with a logo, steer clear of Varsity style bomber jackets. Logomania should strictly remain the domain of Hollywood starlets and middle school footballers.

Secondly, your jacket and cap shouldn’t be too well matched. Think about unexpected combos like navy and khaki or burgundy and camel to elevate your look above the crowd. Alternatively, you can try the other forms of headwear as shown.

Bomber Jacket Appropriate Shoes

When it comes to balancing out your bomber, shoes can make (or break) it. Go too gritty and you’ll come across like a Justin Bieber wannabe, go too polished and it’ll feel awkward. Instead, our advice is to aim in the middle ground of the formality stakes.

If you’re wearing your bomber with jeans, you can’t go past a pair of suede boots. Without the gloss and polish of leather, they say relaxed without saying informal. Plus, come Autumn, I guarantee that you’ll be wearing them with everything.

However, if boots aren’t your thing, dress sneakers are the next best option. Think Common Projects or, if you’re feeling really wild, Valentino Rockrunners. The premium finish on both adds a level of polish and keeps your laid back outfit, just the right amount of sartorial.

How To Wear A Bomber Jacket FAQ

What is a bomber jacket?

A bomber jacket is a jacket style that used to be exclusively worn by fighter pilots, and originally came in a khaki green colour and usually with a bright orange lining. Today, it simply refers to a jacket without a high collar, has minimal detailing – save from maybe a zip on the arm – and has elasticated cuffs.

How should a bomber jacket fit?

Unless you really want to go all '80s with your style, you'll want to avoid boxy, oversized fits. Instead, opt for a slim fit that hugs your body comfortably, without feeling too restrictive. As long as you can wear it comfortably over a shirt, you're in business.
