Australian ‘Harlequin’ Porsche 356 C Could Be The Ultimate Pandemic Project
Australian ‘Harlequin’ Porsche 356 C Could Be The Ultimate Pandemic Project

The beauty of classic cars is that even if they get badly damaged, they stand a good chance of being restored. New cars are designed to crumple in the event of a crash in order to protect passengers as well as pedestrians and are made out of a variety of materials, like plastic, aluminium and fibreglass.Old cars, being made mostly out of steel and chrome, are far less safe, but because they’re mostly metal, they’re easier to restore when things really go tits up. You’ve heard the old adage before: ‘they don’t make them like they used to’.Besides, when a car’s worth enough, people will spend whatever it takes to get it restored. This totalled Aston Martin DB5 was brought back to life, and Rowan Atkinson managed to sell his McLaren F1 for over 12 times what he bought it for – despite having crashed it, twice. With that in mind, fancy having a go at restoring this rough-looking Porsche 356 C project car on sale on Facebook Marketplace in Yarra Junction, Victoria?

Rat rod, or just ratty?
Normally this would be the bit where we’d rattle off some specs about the car – like how the 356 C was the most sporting of the 356 series, with a 95hp 1.6L flat-four and disc brakes all around – but honestly there’s such little of the original car left, making that feel like a pointless endeavour. With no engine, no interior, no drivetrain – seemingly none of the things that make a car a car – this 356 is literally a shell of its former self. The 356 was the first production car Porsche ever made, and established the Austrian/German marque as a performance car icon. Lightweight and spirited, the rear-engined rear-wheel drive two-door remains the perfect expression of classic motoring. The question remains whether that same spirit can be ushered back into this shell.
Even in such a dishevelled state, it’s a hell of a car.
It looks like this baby was originally red, but has picked up a variety of donor panels from different coloured cars over the years… To say nothing of the rust and obvious wear. We don’t mind the car’s look, actually – it reminds us of the VW Polo Harlequin models that were sold in Europe during the 90s.This one seems to have rims from a 944 for some reason, and that’s about it: there’s so little of this car left. The subframe and dash seem to be in reasonable condition but the bodywork’s hardly arrow-straight, and the varying levels of paint, rust and patina on each of its disparate panels means it would be a serious endeavour bringing this Porsche back to a drivable condition.
Throw a stereo in there, maybe?
The other way to look at it is as a blank canvas. Being that the 356 shared many parts with the original VW Beetle, it wouldn’t be as hard to find parts as you might think. You could restore the 356 to original condition, or take advantage of how much automotive technology has changed since the 60s and turn this coupe into a real beast. Just thinking out loud: what if you electrified it? Or threw a small, modern four-cylinder engine in the back?
If you’re a deviant, you could even take an angle grinder to the ‘frunk’ and make space for an LS swap… Just saying.
There’s enormous potential here, but it would need someone very dedicated – and flush – to take on such a project. The seller’s asking a cool $40k (that’s $27.5k in Seppo money) for it, and you’d have to spend easily the same amount again to restore it. But never mind that.Make this your next money pit.

Gym’s Eerie ‘Ultraviolet’ Cleaning Solution Could Spread All Over Australia
Gym’s Eerie ‘Ultraviolet’ Cleaning Solution Could Spread All Over Australia

Orwell once wrote: “If you want a picture of the future, imagine a boot stamping on a human face – for ever.” While Australia’s latest batch of hygiene rules may not be quite so hard on your nose, they still – the petulant among us would argue – fall under the same category of Boring Bureaucratic Evil.

Fortunately, the change we’re here to discuss today goes beyond taking of names and registering of phone numbers.

Enter: Sydney-based boutique gym, SOMA Collection, which has become the first Australian gym to introduce Coronavirus killing technology – Surfacide – to its cleaning routine.

The bespoke fitness company (featuring a gym, fitness studios and spa treatment rooms) decided to incorporate Sufacide to boost customer confidence in these dodgy times.

Surfacide is an innovative disinfection technology primarily used in hospitals, which emits UV-C energy to kill viruses, influenza, staph, fungus, mould and bacteria plus a multitude of other drug resistant organisms.

Soma recently announced surfacide emitters would become crucial to its new cleaning regime and that “multiple emitters will be placed in each space at least two times a week, and through a process of laser mapping, all high touch surfaces within each area will be disinfected, with no chemicals required.”

For context, SOMA Collection opened its doors in October last year, and offers a holistic wellness centre built on the foundation of intimate classes made up of no more than 10 people per session.

Wanting to move away from existing stereotypes that gyms are unclean, co-founders Simon Anderson and Franco Atashi have always prioritised cleanliness. In fact, even before the pandemic hit, the SOMA facilities had multiple hand sanitiser locations and alcohol wipe stations around the gym.

Now, co-founder Simon Anderson says the sparkle will be taken to a whole new level: “We will be stepping up the game. In addition to bringing in new laser Coronavirus killing emitters, we will be cleaning diligently at multiple times throughout the day and increasing our antibacterial spray stations.”

“While in the gym, we are ensuring clients avoid physical greetings and practice good hygiene. The amount of people in classes have also been limited, with reformer pilates reduced to only 8 per class,” continues Anderson.

The Surfacide technology was previously only available to hospitals. However, this new partnership will help put Coronavirus killing technology in the hands of Australian and New Zealand businesses.

To understand more DMARGE had an exclusive chat with Simon. First on our brains was: will this new technology be adopted across the board? While he lacks a crystal ball, Simon told us he’s hopeful.

“Gyms should be doing anything they can to make their space not only safe but to reassure their members and give them peace of mind,” Simon told DMARGE. “The new Surfacide laser mapping technology definitely does this for us.”

“It previously was widely used in predominately hospitals, but I anticipate there will be a shift to seeing this being adopted widely across gyms here in Australia and across the globe.”

We then asked how it differs, exactly, from a spray and wipe, to which Simon said, “The key point of difference here is the laser mapping UV-C.”

“This will be done in conjunction with our diligent cleaning routines. This will not only give us peace of mind but will allow us to ensure all germs are killed and that we clean and eliminate bacteria in places that are hard to reach.”

“The other benefit is that is doesn’t use chemicals so it’s better for your gym equipment, allowing it to not take in the chemicals is a big bonus,” Simon added.

“We are taking extra precautions and ensuring we are doing everything we can to maintain clean and safe practices. We’ve also enforced strict social distancing measures, added additional sanitisation stations, reduced our class intake and adopted intense cleaning routines across the board.”

The Killer Mental Health Strategy Successful People Use That You Don’t
The Killer Mental Health Strategy Successful People Use That You Don’t

There’s no single formula or definition for success, and anyone who claims that they have the single, unequivocal answer to ‘becoming successful’ is at best self-deluded, and at worst, a charlatan.

At DMARGE we call ourselves ‘the playbook for the modern man’. Modern men don’t all fit one tidy mold or archetype, and there’s no one-size-fits-all method to being successful, or improving your mental health, or even happiness. Modern masculinity is complex, and inquisitive, and ever-changing.

But there are some tactics that people who are genuinely successful by any metric tend to utilise. And maybe giving them a go will help you become more satisfied; happier; more successful.

We spoke exclusively to Luke Macleod, mindfulness expert and founder of Soul Alive, Australia’s first live stream meditation platform. He related that many of the world’s most successful people – both past and present – consider meditation to be an essential part of their success.

“Celebrities like Steve Jobs, who practiced zen meditation, or Muhammad Ali, who was a big proponent of Vedic meditation, are great examples of successful people who used meditation,” Macleod recounts.

The best boxer of all time and one of the world’s most influential tech visionaries? It’s hard to argue with results.

Other successful figures who meditate include Arianna Huffington, Jerry Seinfeld, Joe Rogan, Oprah, Hugh Jackman, even bloody Rupert Murdoch (say what you like about the guy, but you can’t deny his business acumen).

Regular meditation has a wealth of health benefits, from helping with your sleep hygiene to improving your mental health, Macleod claims.

Call it hippy nonsense if you like, but there’s some clinical evidence to suggest that there’s tangible benefits to meditation, researchers at John Hopkins University concluded in a 2013 study.

In any case, practicing meditation or mindfulness techniques has almost no adverse effects. So many people suggest that it’s made a big difference in their life, so why not give it a go?

“There’s no wrong way to meditate,” Macleod shares. Just don’t go overboard with it, like Jared Leto.

Luke Macleod’s Quick Tips For Meditating Like A Pro

  1. Don’t go in with any expectations
  2. Sit on a chair or stool with a cushion, keeping your feet flat and your spine straight by activating your core
  3. Focus on something unimportant but consistent e.g. a one-word mantra, unique noise or sensation
  4. Don’t switch off, switch on. If you think too much about trying to have a clear mind, you’ll never have a clear mind – so relax and surrender yourself to the process.

‘Double Decker’ Airplane Seat Design Makes Germaphobes Dreams Come True
‘Double Decker’ Airplane Seat Design Makes Germaphobes Dreams Come True

What would you give to get a good sleep on a red eye? That’s the question that plagued travellers for the last 20 years. But new times call for new queries and now everyone’s asking: what would you give to get a germ free ride to the other side of the world?

Heck, what would you give to be able to travel in the first place?

While new seat designs are known for being a bit like a Big Talking Tinder Match – exciting at first, but ultimately come to nothing – the latest one to do the rounds is the coolest we’ve ever seen.

That says nothing about its commercial viability or whether it will actually be adopted by carriers, sure. But damn: if it was…

We digress.

The design reconfigures airplane cabins with double-decker lie-flat seats in premium economy. It is also being touted as a way to reduce the spread of The Virus, once travel revs up again.

Zephyr Seat is the vision of designer (and CEO of start up Zephyr Aerospace) Jeffrey O’Neill, who (naturally) believes his design could be a game changer.

As he told CNN Travel, “We believe that new types of travelers will require privacy or will want to pay extra for that as much as they would pay for the ability to sleep.”

This Zephyr Seat creation would allow airlines to provide double-decker seating in a 2-4-2 configuration which, O’Neill reckons, would allow most big airlines to maintain the same seating density as their existing premium economy cabins.

How does it work, exactly? Basically, The Zephyr uses the space that exists between a standard seat and an overhead bin.

“We basically retrofitted a whole other seat on top of another,” O’Neill told CNN Travel. “So it’s essentially two levels, it’s not as tall off the ground as people might imagine, it’s only four and a half feet off the ground from the entry point to the lower seat to the upper seat.”

The result is more leg room, without the airline being forced to sacrifice space or reduce passenger headcount.

Although it’s early days yet, according to 7 News, O’Neill says he’s identified an engineering partner and has been in conversation with four major airlines, including US carrier Delta about his concept (though no firm commitments have been made).

If he gets more of a bite, the next step would be passing the design through the required safety tests, which could take up to three years.

John Legend Ruins Super Schmick ‘Resort Outfit’ With Bizarre Footwear Choice
John Legend Ruins Super Schmick ‘Resort Outfit’ With Bizarre Footwear Choice

There are few men who exude the same sort of effortless confidence and style of John Legend. I mean, this is a man so suave that he gets called John Legend (acclaimed poet J. Ivy came up with the moniker – his real name is John Stephens).

RELATED: Buy the John Legend x Sperry collection here.

Incredibly talented and also just a really nice dude, the 41-year-old EGOT rarely misses a beat. Beyond his creative genius, he’s also known for his crisp sartorial choices. He’s a man who’s never afraid to experiment with his style – like with this Alexander McQueen ‘skirt-blazer’ he wore to the 2020 Grammys.

Performing on nationally-syndicated US breakfast show Good Morning America, Legend decided to pair a Paul Smith suit with some colourful Sperry Top-Sider boat shoes and a plain white tee in an eclectic take on ‘business casual’.

Legend’s spoken before about his love of ‘resort vibes’ and switching things up with exciting colour selections. The Cloud Authentic Original Plaid Boat Shoes from Sperry are a bit wild, but perfectly exhibits his creative nature.

Legend’s a big fan of the classic boat shoe brand, and inked an endorsement deal with them at the start of the year. Whether his kicks here were a contractual obligation or genuine outfit choice we’re not sure, but we feel as if the fit might be a little more cohesive if the shoes were a little plainer.

The wild shoes also distract from the gold Audemars Piguet Royal Oak model he’s wearing – a watch that pretty should be the only statement piece you need.

Still, we admire his risk-taking and the man still looks pretty good – if there’s anyone that can pull off plaid moccasins, it’s John Legend.

Upgrade The Fit

If you want to have a shot at Legend’s ‘resort style’, try pairing the t-shirt and suit combo with some more understated accessories – the focus should be on the suit.

Legend’s teal suit is a cracker, so take inspiration from that and try some beachy pastels. This light pink Paul Smith number is stunning. Try pairing it with some more subtle coloured moccasins, like these brown Sebago Docksides. Alternatively, you’d also look good with some plain white sneakers, like some classic Stan Smiths.

As for a timepiece to complete the fit, why not something understated yet eye-catching, like a beautiful Longines Présence model.

You might not be able to beat John Legend in a singing contest, but you might be able to beat him for ‘best dressed’ next time you’re sipping Aperol Spritzes at the surf club. Ideally with someone as pretty as Chrissy Teigen on your arm…

The Glimmer Of Hope Australian Business Travellers Have Been Waiting For
The Glimmer Of Hope Australian Business Travellers Have Been Waiting For

The travel industry was bumped off an Icarus-like perch early this year. So hard was the fall, the only words that have offered jetsetters much hope since March are the following: travel bubble.

From talk of a Trans-Tasman agreement with New Zealand to a Trans-Pacific bubble with idyllic pacific islands, not to mention the invitation extended by Greece, Australia – judging by some headlines – had its pick of half the world.

Unfortunately, last week, Qantas’ decision to scrap international flights (except New Zealand) until late October, and comments made by the head of Australia’s largest travel company on Today, cut the legs off Australians’ hopes for international leisure travel to return before Christmas.

However, one group of Flyabouts have just been thrown a lifeline; essential business travellers. As Scott Morrison confirmed on Thursday on 2GB Radio, although Australia’s borders will remain shut until at least mid-September and likely into 2021, there’s at least one type of traveller who will be allowed to come and go.

“I think there will be the opportunity for Australians to engage in essential business travel,” he said.

Morrison also pointed out there was already some leeway for business travellers at the moment, “provided the quarantine arrangements are put in place when they return”, but suggested it could soon become even easier.

“We are just looking to be as practical as we can about this …and open up the economy as much as possible because that is what is going to get the jobs back.”

He also said a small group of international students will be allowed to “test” Australia’s quarantine measures in July.

The situation for leisure travellers, on the other hand, remains bleak. As we reported last week, when the National Press Club asked coalition Senator Simon Birmingham about when overseas trips would be an option again for pleasure, he suggested it is more likely than not Australians will be banned from overseas travel until 2021.

“I hope that we can look eventually at some of those countries who have similar successes in suppressing the spread of COVID to Australia and New Zealand, and in working … with those countries,” he said.

“But I do, sadly, think that in terms of open tourist-related travel in or out of Australia, that remains quite some distance off, just because of the practicalities of the volumes that are involved and the need for us to first and foremost keep putting health first.”

Asked if he was really talking about a travel ban until 2021, Senator Birmingham replied: “Honestly, I think that is more likely the case.”

Wild ‘Vermillion Vampire’ 1982 BMW E21 For Sale In Melbourne
Wild ‘Vermillion Vampire’ 1982 BMW E21 For Sale In Melbourne

There’s something iconic about 80s BMW 3 Series. They represent the excess, glamour and aesthetics better than anything outside of a Lamborghini Countach: their sharp angles, foreboding grilles, dual headlights and confident stance… Be still my beating heart.

The most famous 80s BMW is probably the first generation M3, immortalised on the album cover of Frank Ocean’s 2011 debut mixtape Nostalgia, Ultra and young car nuts’ bedroom walls the world over.

But the original 3 Series, the E21, deserves just as much love. The first-gen 3 Series’ jutting kidney grille and muscular proportions give it an almost villainous presence – a stark departure from the jovial stockiness of the 02 series that preceded it.

This 1982 323i for sale in Melbourne on Carsales is a particularly vicious beast, with even more performance credentials than an E30 M3 – or most cars, for that matter.

“Enter my secret lair…”

There have been too many modifications made to this glorious 80s coupe to list. Highlights include the WRX-esque BBS rims, Bilstein dampers all around, fully kitted out Wilwood brakes, Recaro seats…

Oh, and the engine from a E36 M3. Thought that might be worth a mention.

This 2.8L aluminium block straight-six with DOHC and VVT would easily be pushing in excess of 200hp in this beauty, particularly considering this car’s had a performance tune as well. It’s the perfect motor for this bloody brilliant ball-busting Bavarian.

An engine bay so tidy even Marie Kondo would be impressed. And it certainly sparks joy.

We’re shocked at how pristine this E21 is. According to the current (only 2nd!) owner, the original owner was still servicing the car at his BMW dealer’s until he bought it in 2006.

“It has been garaged its whole life, and as such there is absolutely no rust anywhere on it. The car was my daily driver from 2006 to 2011, at which point I decided it was too nice to drive everyday, and from there it evolved into what you see today.”

The madman’s only asking AUD 26,000 (USD 18,000) for it, too. Surely he’s spent double if not triple that on mods. Not only is this an insane car, but it’s an insane bargain.

Aside from a few small stone chips and a slightly worn driver’s seat, the condition of this E21 simply beggars belief. Look how crisp the dash looks – not a single crack.

If we had an odd thirty grand to spare, we’d be hopping on the first flight to Melbourne to snap up this gorgeous example of German sporting excellence.

Sadly, we’ll just have to leave it to you punters.

Australian Men Suffering Hair Loss Can Now Benefit From Discrete Solution

As men, we've had every fitness and nutrition tip in existence since Sparticus chewed his last bone drilled into us since birth. But when it comes to our mental health, up until the last few years, there has been a dearth of openness.

Cool Brisbane Date Ideas For Every Type Of Lover
Cool Brisbane Date Ideas For Every Type Of Lover

Guess who’s back, lovers. That’s right, we’re doling out dating pointers differently by blatantly generalising people so that it’ll be easier for our readers to find what they’re after.

From fitness lovers to the introverted lovers, here you should find exactly where to take your date based purely on their interests. Godspeed, lover boy.

The Old School Lover

Mount Coot-Tha

Traditionalists don’t need to go down the tired old route of a movie and a goddamn picnic for a great date. Simply hit up the Mt Coot-tha lookout which is perched just above Brisbane city to enjoy the sunset and city skyline whilst scoring some serious brownie points. If the great outdoors isn’t your thing then opt for a spot of dining with a view at Alchemy Restaurant & Bar which overlooks the riverside of Brisbane CBD.

The Fitness Junkie

Springbrook National Park

Being a fitness freak in the city doesn’t leave you many options. Or does it. Make sure you grab your date who is equally as fit as you for a spot of bike riding around Brisbane’s River Loop. Loser buys dinner. If you’re up for a serious hike take your date hiking through Springbrook National Park to discover rock pools and cool waterfalls. It’s also just 45 minutes drive from the Gold Coast.

The Foodie Hypebeast

Rogue Bar + Bistro

One of Brisbane’s most lauded eateries also comes with an open air dining experience. With killer contemporary decor and a kitchen serving up a refined Modern European menu, Rogue Bar + Bistro is a true diamond in the rough in Brisbane’s unassuming industrial area. If you’ve got room for more dessert, swing by Cowch Dessert Bar for something creatively indulgent. Your foodie date will thank you later once they’re happily fat and fulfilled.

The Introverted

Gallery of Modern Art

Those who don’t bode well with noise and big social gatherings can opt to impress with a little help from art at Brisbane’s Gallery of Modern Art. With spectacular installations and exhibitions to explore, you and your date won’t even notice the other visitors around you. Conversation starters? You’re looking at one around every corner. Brisbane also boasts some of the country’s most impressive farmers markets so make sure you take your date on a round of foraging. The most popular being Jan Powers Farmers Market or the West End favourite, Davies Park Market.

The High Maintenance

Nightfall Wilderness Camp

Glamping doesn’t get any better than at the Nightfall Wilderness Camp. The ultra luxurious nature experience is located inland from the Gold Coast but is absolutely worth the stay for those who want to treat their date to something special – like not getting eaten by a bear. The luxe safari tents here can be found perched beside the crystal-clear Christmas Creek and Lamington National Park. Facilities and appointments include king-size beds, organic linen, rain-head showers, meal baths, a fireplace and micro-kitchen.

The Drinker

Sixteen Antlers Rooftop Bar

Those who enjoy some loving over a good tipple can hit up Brisbane’s Sixteen Antlers Rooftop Bar. It’s all about the atmosphere and vibe here as you get to know your date in the warm glow of the city’s skyline.

The Night Owl

Cedar Creek Falls

They say not to swim at night but they certainly didn’t say anything about taking a sneaky dip at dusk. For those who like an adventure when the sun goes down, hit up the Cedar Creek Falls for a romantic swim away from the crowds who tend to flock to it on weekend. Your senses will be rewarded.

The Early Riser

Artie & Mai

Artie & Mai is one of the hottest brunch spots in Brisbane with contemporary decor to boot. If your date is an early riser they’ll be thoroughly impressed with the hanging plants and kitchen which does all day breakfast and craft beer. Beer for breakfast? If you’re in that kind of relationship, there’s no reason why you shouldn’t.
