You know how it is: you’re halfway through a long day at work, attention-span rapidly failing, when you guiltily reach for your fourth coffee of the day. Something about not abusing your vices etc. goes through your brain.Well hold that thought, because German scientists recently found that four cups of coffee a day is good for the heart. Yes: it depends on the person; if you’re not used to it, it can make you twitchy—and if you drink seven red bulls in a row you could have a heart attack and die—but if you are a seasoned coffee addict you now have another reason not to kick the java. But how can caffeine be good for the heart? Allow Science Daily to explain.
“A new study now shows that caffeine promotes the movement of a regulatory protein into mitochondria, enhancing their function and protecting cardiovascular cells from damage.”
Previous studies have shown that caffeine can improve the functional capacity of endothelial cells, which line the interior of blood vessels, and that the effect involved mitochondria, which are the cells’ energy powerhouses. This study built on that, showing that a protein called p27, an inhibitor of the cell cycle, was present in mitochondria in the major cell types of the heart. As reported by Science Daily, “In these cells, mitochondrial p27 promoted migration of endothelial cells, protected heart muscle cells from cell death, and triggered the conversion of fibroblasts into cells containing contractile fibers — all crucial for repair of heart muscle after myocardial infarction.”
“They found that caffeine induced the movement of p27 into mitochondria, setting off this beneficial chain of events, and did so at a concentration that is reached in humans by drinking four cups of coffee.”
However, before you go and order a triple espresso, this research was conducted on mice. Further research is needed to confirm if caffeine has exactly the same effect on humans, and also on whether the other side effects of drinking four cups of coffee a day outweigh the benefits outlined here.RELATED: Messy People Have Clearer Minds, Scientists Somehow Conclude

Trawl through Floyd ‘Money’ Mayweather‘s social media feed and you’ll often be greeted with snapshots of an average multi-millionaire’s life. Fast cars, fast jets and gratuitous displays of consumerism.
Exhibit A.
When Mayweather isn’t relentlessly pushing his own stripper empire on Instagram though, he can be found showing off his latest bling. And that latest bling takes the concept of male jewellery to a whole new level with an US$18 million price tag.
Made by the New York-based Jacob & Co., “The Billionaire” watch features 260 carats of emerald-cut diamonds flanked on the strap and face. At the time of its unveiling in 2015, online watch publication A Blog to Watch described it as a piece in which “Comfort is really beside the point”.
“No king ever praised the comfort of wearing a heavy piece of gilded metal on their head,” it continues.
“If you are the privileged person who wears the Jacob & Co. Billionaire, then I believe you have an obligation to do so in order to warn the people around you about who you are, and that obligation extends to its large-size and girth.”
Naturally the watch isn’t subtle in any way. It measures in at a massive 58 x 47.5mm and is powered by an exclusive Jacob & Co. skeleton manual winding caliber Tourbillon movement. Mayweather also took the indulgent opportunity to praise his latest jeweller who he now claims as “the best jeweler in the world” thanks to an unbeatable deal.

In the brave new world that is online dating in 2018, men are type-cast as sausage factories looking for an indiscriminate hump. Women, on the other hand, have a reputation for weighing up everything from a prospective mate’s annual salary and wittiness-per-tweet, to the rate at which they are going bald.In response, dating apps like Bumble, in which women are the prime-movers of any interaction, have sprung up, furthering the stereotype that women are pickier than men. And by calling it a ~stereotype~ we aren’t saying it isn’t true. Just that it’s not true of everyone. Especially, apparently, guys in their 40’s.The Queensland University of Technology yesterday published a study on the online dating behaviour of more than 41,000 Australians. The results show that when it comes to the education level of a partner, although women under 40 are more particular, from this age onwards the tables turn and (although they are less likely to advertise it on Twitter) men become the pickiest.
I’m hella picky
— Saweetie (@Saweetie) 23 June 2018
As reported by Science Daily, “Women in peak fertility are more picky about the education level of men they prefer; seeking the same level or higher in a potential mate.” Over 40, however, “Men become more picky than women about the education level of their partner.”
too picky to be a hoe .
— baby j (@jaelynmariii) 27 June 2018
We asked Damien Diecke, a dating coach at The School Of Attraction, why he thinks this is. According to him, it comes down to supply and demand. “Women tend to date older men. This trend is stronger the younger women are. So a 21 year old woman is a lot less likely to date a 19 year old guy than a 33 year old woman is to date a 31 year old man.”
“This means that men who are 25 really only have choices of women below or at their current age bracket (with some exceptions, but again we’re just talking trending numbers).”
On top of this, younger men are (generally) less desirable. “They’re less socialised, more unpredictable, less able to provide security for a potential family, and overall less mature than their female counterparts,” he said. So young men can’t afford to be choosy, while younger women are attractive to men of a large range of ages.
Every guy needs a girl with a small waist and a big butt. What do you have to offer, a bucket hat and a soundcloud link?
— Riley Driscoll (@gingerdriscoll) December 29, 2014
This means that once men get older, their options in the dating pool open up. Doubly so if they’re well educated and have a secure career. Add in the fact that as men get older, they tend to target younger women, and, suddenly, around the age cited in the ‘pickiness’ study, women in the 40 and above demographic are left with a serious lack of men to choose from.
“It’s no secret that women talk about a ‘man shortage.’ Because if you’re a woman over 40, there is a significant drop in the number of men around your age who will elect to date you instead of a woman in her mid to late 30s.”
Whether or not single men in their forties are picky because they are holding out for a nobel prize winning supermodel or because these still-single men are likely to have been picky their whole lives requires further investigation.RELATED: Have Better Sex With Strangers, A Sexologist Reveals

For technology buffs who like to fly flat, Emirates have just released a video guided tour of some game changing First Class Suites, that are currently operational on their Boeing 777 range.
These middle aisle suites are an industry first, projecting an image of the sky outside via fibre optic cameras on the plane onto the virtual windows, so that you can experience unencumbered views of takeoff and landing.
They also feature floor-to-ceiling sliding doors (creating a fully-enclosed private space) and a video call function to communicate with cabin crew.
In a statement, Sir Tim Clark, president of Emirates Airlines, revealed that the multimillion dollar set-up was inspired by the Mercedes-Benz S-Class, as seen in its leather seating, hi-tech control panels and mood lighting.
“We are very excited about our new fully-enclosed suite which is a real game-changer in terms of privacy, comfort, and thoughtful luxury.”
And if that wasn’t enough, the seats can be placed in a zero gravity position, reportedly inspired by NASA technology, to give a feeling of weightlessness. Chuck in 40 square feet of space, a chill colour palette of soft grey, cream and champagne, and you have yourself one hell of a suite.
So go on: pour yourself a whisky (unless especially if it’s not yet noon) and feast your eyes on this triumph of engineering.

Remember when you could sip an ice cold VB (or five) after a hard game of footy? Well, if buzz-killing scientists get their way, those days might be numbered, because ~alcohol~ isn’t good for you. Or something.
A recent report by Chris Stevens, lecturer in Sports and Exercise Science at Southern Cross University, recently concluded the obvious as much. Whilst it’s easy to poke fun at a scientist presenting something common-sensical as groundbreaking, his explanation of how alcohol impacts your recovery is worth a read.
For a detailed breakdown on why your body will resent being fed VB rather than a Powerade after your next half marathon, read on.
Dehydration
Fatigue and recovery after serious exercise is, like, a thing. But for some reason, instead of denouncing sport’s real problem—running, jumping, sweating etc.—scientists have gone after the end goal. The reason we do any of it in the first place. The well earned beer.
According to our friends at The Conversation, “Athletic qualities such as strength, power and endurance can be depleted for several days after an intense workout. This can be improved with appropriate and timely nutrition and hydration.” As it’s a diuretic, beer hardly qualifies for this post-workout scheme. But what about a refreshing Vodka soda? We can feel the condensation on our fingers already. Further study is necessary, surely.
Impact On Sleep
According to Chris Stevens, “Alcohol consumption is also known to decrease sleep duration when consumed after a rugby match, either directly through alcohol’s negative influence on falling asleep and staying asleep, or indirectly as a result of a late night on the town.”
With poor sleep comes impaired muscle repair, energy restoration and delayed rehydration, all of which significantly impair your recovery of both strength and power in the following days after a workout.
“In one study, when drinks containing 4% alcohol were ingested following exercise, there was an increase in urine output and a delay in the recovery rate of blood volume. Drinking nothing at all would be better.”
What this doesn’t take into account is the team bonding and mental benefits of hitting the reset button after a big win (or heart-breaking loss). But in terms of your weekly after-training tins—maybe this one could be some food for thought.
What Should You Drink?
If this article has convinced you of the errors of your ways, sports drinks and chocolate milk have been demonstrated to better assist muscle repair and rehydration. And you can’t go wrong with h2o, either.
Happy drinking!

If it ain’t broke don’t fix it right? Wrong. It’s easy for men to become complacent about sexually transmitted diseases when you’ve had a clean run for years.
Unfortunately giving the old pecker a decent scrub in the shower just doesn’t cut it anymore (not that we’re suggesting any sort of cutting near nether regions). What we are suggesting though is taking the risk of sexually transmitted diseases seriously.
With the help of Dr. Stephen Massey of Bondi Doctors, we’re revealing the dangers of what can happen when you don’t treat sexually transmitted diseases.
Herpes
What is it: One of the most common STDs that affect men is herpes (types: HSV-1 and HSV-2). It’s a painful infection of the genitals that’s commonly spread through vaginal, anal or oral sex.
Whilst it can’t be cured once contracted, there are effective treatments that can control it.
If you ignore it: “If you don’t go on meds to control it then the infection can keep recurring,” says Dr. Massey.
“You’re affected by recurring painful rashes and perhaps even more important is the greater chance of spreading it onto partners.”
“Thats’ the real value of getting herpes checked out – so we can get you on tablets as soon as possible.”
The need to control the spread of the virus comes from the fact that it’s so prevalent in today’s society.
Gonorrhoea & Chlamydia
What is it: We often talk about these two STDs in the same sentence because they both cause urethritis in men – that means inflammation of the urethra and penis with symptoms like penile discharge and pain. The latter is more typical with gonorrhoea.
If you ignore Chlamydia: “Lots of chlamydia cases don’t have symptoms,” says Dr. Massey.
“Up to 70% of men have no symptoms at all. This in itself highlights the value of getting sexual health checks done even if you don’t have any symptoms and especially if you’re having casual partners or unprotected sex.”
If left untreated, chlamydia can lead to a condition called Epididymo-orchitis. This affects men’s testicles by causing them to be inflamed to a painful state. And whilst the condition can be treated, experts still haven’t ruled whether it can impact fertility.
“That’s the concern,” says Dr. Massey. “Any infection of the testicle makes theoretically sense that that it could reduce fertility.”
Those infected with Chlamydia can have it for months even years without even knowing. “You certainly can’t rely on symptoms to diagnose Chlamydia,” says Dr. Massey.
“It’s probably worth mentioning gay men can get these infections anally or in the throat too.”
If you ignore Gonorrhoea:
Untreated Gonorrhoea is no better either. Over time Gonorrhoea can spread to other parts of the body like it in the joints where it can cause arthritis. If it gets into the blood stream this can cause Septicemia or blood poisoning.
“That’s a severe bacterial infection,” says Dr. Massey.
“Gonorrhoea would usually have symptoms so people will present with a discharge and pain, so it’s very unlikely to have it and not know about it.”
Gonorrhoea symptoms begin to show usually within days.
Human Papillomavirus (HPV)
What is it: This is the virus that causes warts on the human body. There are many different strains of HPV from finger warts to foot warts. Genital warts are sexually transmitted and some strains of HPV can even cause certain types of cancers.
“The strains that cause these cancers are not the same strains that cause visible warts so there aren’t any symptoms that early on,” says Dr. Massey.
If you ignore it: HPV will rarely cause penile and anal cancers in men. They do however affect women if they’re infected through sex and this can lead to cervical cancer.
“Most people’s immune systems will clear the virus; we don’t know why some will go on to develop problems. That’s why women have cervical cancer testing.”
Boys in high school are now vaccinated to stop them from spreading HPV to females as they’re the ones who are at risk of developing cancer.
“If you see warts down there it doesn’t mean you’re at risk of cancers. Different strains cause the visible warts, not the kind that cause cancers. But if you have any lumps or swellings on the penis, testicles or anus, you shouldn’t just think it’s warts. Get it checked by your GP.”
Syphilis
What is it: Syphilis is an STD most prevalent amongst gay men. It can show in the form of a non-itchy skin rash or small skin growths on the anus. It can also bring about flu-like symptoms, weight loss and hair loss.
If you ignore it: “Left unchecked, it can affect the heart and brain,” says Dr. Massey.
“Early symptoms could be a painless sore on the penis. Herpes as an example is painful. You may get a sore down there and think because it’s painless it couldn’t be anything, but that could be the first symptom of syphilis.”
“It’s very easily treated with antibiotics at the early stage but left untreated over years it can be really damaging and even fatal.”
As will all STDs or anomalies, any kind of lump, bump or sore in the genital area needs a check up quickly.
HIV
What is it: Whilst entirely rare in heterosexual males in Australia, it is still important to note. In the early stages it’s likely that a man wouldn’t know they had HIV.
“When you first contract HIV you’ll have an influenza or a flu-like illness. There are many things that can give you those symptoms so people aren’t alert to it or wouldn’t think it’s HIV since it often settles quickly.”
“And then you can feel completely well for months or years while your immune system slowly depletes. It’s not often until quite late in the illness when people call it Aids – that’s when your immune system gets low enough that you start to develop symptoms of illness.”
“This latter stage could occur 3, 5 or even 10 years down the track.”
If you ignore it: Untreated HIV was fatal back in the day but now at whatever stage of the illness it can be treated – not curable but can be treated.
“The longer you leave it and the more weaker your immune system becomes and the more likely your are to have long term consequences,” says Dr. Massey.
“So we recommend people are treated at their very first diagnosis even if they are years off develop any problems. You’ll have much better survival and health outcomes.”

A$AP Rocky is arguably one of the best dressed rappers in today’s game.
The American artist is a regular at the world’s biggest fashion shows and for Paris Fashion Week the Fashion Killa producer stepped out in a complete black ensemble which evoked some serious Rick Owens vibes.
The only issue? This wasn’t a Rick Owens show.
Rocky was at the latest 2019 collection launch for American label, Alyxstudio. His look consisted of the latest blazer from the collection which features a cool fade pattern to help break up the dominating hue.
It’s certainly one of the most innovative ways to wear a blazer which Rocky further paired with a black crew neck, black trousers and more fat straps than a bondage bar.
Details were added to give the look a bit of ‘pop’ in certain areas. This included a silver chain necklace, a wallet chain, Dior rings and crispy white laces.
If you needed proof of streetwear moving into the luxe segment, this would be it.

Being a man doesn’t always mean you’ll know the fastest or best way to get a job done. Manuals and following rules tend to evade us and we’re natural born doers. With that said, it’s not 1999 anymore and the regular hack or two can do absolute wonders on your quest to becoming a stylish magnificent bastard.
Here are ten of the best to keep you ahead of the pack in the style stakes.
Maintain Your Prized Denim By Airing It Out

Washing your jeans too often can degrade the natural colour and denim ageing process. There’s a controversial theory that says leaving your dirty jeans in the freezer will miraculously render them odourless and bacteria-free. Not true. According to Smithsonian.com, the bacteria on your jeans can survive on your natural body temperature as well as below it. In other words, freezing your jeans won’t actually kill the bacteria and it will reproduce quickly once the garment warms up again. Save your freezer the agony by turning your prized denim inside out and hanging them to air dry for a day instead.
Folding & Packing A Blazer Without Wrinkles
Consider yourself the stylish jet-setting man? This is a serious hack that will ensure your blazers make it half way across the world with you in your luggage without looking like Steve Tyler’s face when you pull it out. Inside-out is the key. Watch and learn, young Jedi.
Determining If Pants Will Fit Without Trying Them On

No change rooms? No worries. One simple way to tell if your newfound favourite pair of pants will fit is to use the length of your forearm. The length of an arm from your fist to the elbow roughly correlates to your waist size. Ensure the button and fly are done all the way and if your arm slides in comfortably, so should your butt. Try this with an existing pair of pants if you’re still sceptical – clown pants not applicable.
Using Ice To Remove Gum From Clothes

Ah, the old gum on the pants trick. Most of us have been there but short of torching your favourite garment after such a dire incident, not many know that gum can be removed by simply freezing it.
Some say use ice cubes for fifteen minutes but we say just go all out and whack in into the freezer. You won’t have to deal with melting ice, numb hands and once the gum becomes hard and brittle you can simply peel it off.
Remove Red Wine Stains With White Wine

White wine is understood to dissolve the anthocyanin that gives red wine its colour. This has been proven by some internet geniuses already but we must stress that you should wash your garment immediately in stain-removing detergent after using the white wine to avoid bleached stains. This will show even on a white shirt so be weary on how long you leave it soaked to avoid permanent damage in the name of cleaning.
Abolishing Short Lived Summer Scents

Everyone loves summer but when it comes to pricey aftershaves, your favourite summer fragrance can simply evaporate on your skin as quickly as you apply it. The solution here is to apply in the less conventional areas on your body to ensure the pleasant waft lingers for longer. The chest and biceps are usually good places to start as opposed to your neck and wrists as the rate of evaporation is slower. Using a fragrance-free moisturiser before applying the fragrance will also help keep the scent hanging about on your skin for longer.
How To Tell If An Off-The-Rack Blazer Fits

Determine A Shirt Fit With A Simple Sit

This one may come as obvious to some but hey, we’re men and the most obvious sometimes evades us. When it comes to button down shirts, choosing a slim fit is all good but how it looks when you’re sitting should be a determining factor on whether you should go ahead with the sale. If your buttons are pulling when you’re sitting and you can see skin from the side, it’s time to move up a size division.
Removing The Yellow Ring Around The Inner Collar

See that dreaded yellow stain on the inside of your white dress shirt collar? Those stains are common amongst men’s shirts and are often caused by a build up of sweat, dead skin and hair product. There’s no real shortcut way to fix this one other than to apply a lot of stain remover for whites and let it soak in real good. Apply it to the collar or yellow areas and leave it to set for ten minutes or a few hours depending on the stubbornness. Hand wash as normal and repeat the process using a toothbrush to rub in the stain remover each time. It’s called being ‘domestimicated’. Duh.
Un-shirink Your Clothes

Accidentally threw your garment into a dryer? Expect it to go down half a size. The solution: re-soak it with hot water and hair conditioner for five minutes before stretching it back carefully. It’ll revert back to its normal self and smell like daisies.

Your ex just blanked you, your boss just fired you and your neighbour’s cat glared at you as you opened the gate to your own home. Rough day. You open the door and, as if by magic, your dog somehow already knows how you feel, and tries to lick you better.
You sit down on the sofa, hound’s head on your lap, thinking, “You get me better than anyone, don’tcha?”.
Until now, this would sound stupid out loud. However as of yesterday you can bestow as much praise on your pooch as you damn well please, because scientists have confirmed what you always suspected: your dog knows you better than anyone.
The study, published in the journal of Learning & Behaviour, investigated whether dogs have developed specific skills that enable them to pick up on emotional cues contained in a person’s face.
As reported by Science Daily, “Scientists presented photos of the same two adults’ faces (a man and a woman) to 26 feeding dogs… The photos showed a human face expressing one of the six basic human emotions: anger, fear, happiness, sadness, surprise, disgust or being neutral.”
The scientists found that the dogs demonstrated greater cardiac activity (and took longer to resume feeding) when shown photographs that expressed arousing emotional states such as anger, fear and happiness.
“The dogs’ increased heart rate indicated that in these cases they experienced higher levels of stress.”
Also, dogs tended to turn their heads to the left when they saw human faces expressing anger, fear or happiness. “The reverse happened when the faces looked surprised, possibly because dogs view it as a non-threatening, relaxed expression. These findings therefore support the existence of an asymmetrical emotional modulation of dogs’ brains to process basic human emotions,” (Science Daily).
