Personal Trainer Reveals The Hidden Dangers Of The Keto Diet
Personal Trainer Reveals The Hidden Dangers Of The Keto Diet

The keto diet is credited with everything from Lebron James’ abs to Kim Kardashian’s internet-breaking booty (and the body ‘transformations’ of thousands of everyday people). However, as the low-carb regime grows in popularity, more and more people have reacted badly to it.

While this is always going to happen as any large population experiments with anything, in terms of Keto specifically, Drew Harrisberg, an Australian exercise physiologist and personal trainer has a dire warning for diabetics (and a cautionary word for everyone else).

Drew recently revealed to Whimn that despite achieving a lean body type, great fitness, enhanced concentration, flatline blood sugar levels and “my lowest ever insulin requirements” on the Keto diet, he will never try it again, because it compromised his ability to process carbohydrates.

“I noticed that every time I ate foods containing carbohydrates, my blood sugar went very high, and that frustrated me. I also noticed that my cholesterol went up to 6.4 mmol/L. Sure, I was very efficient at burning fat and ketones for energy but my tolerance for foods containing carbohydrate went down noticeably, even after a workout when I’m usually my most insulin sensitive.”

Not only could Drew no longer eat a healthy snack like a banana without a large blood sugar spike, but he noticed that he needed more and more insulin, “To bring my blood sugar back down into the normal range.”

And while die-hard Keto advocates will blame carbs for these sugar spikes, Drew says that would be a case of mistaken identity: “Even if I didn’t eat anything and my own body produced glucose endogenously (i.e the liver dumped glucose into my bloodstream via a process called gluconeogenesis), I couldn’t fix my high blood sugar levels because I was resistant to the insulin I injected.”

“It felt like I was on my way to developing type 2 diabetes (type 1 is more than enough, thank you). It was a very frightening reality and a huge wake-up call.”

Why did this happen? Turning to the experts over at Medical News Today, it’s because even though Keto can help stabilise a diabetic’s blood sugar levels, it is never going to fix the root of your illness, just hide the symptoms (and in Drew’s case compromise his ability to deal with sugar even more). So every time he stepped out of the diet he was punished.

“Some people with type 2 diabetes who also follow a ketogenic diet may be able to reduce their need for medication… However… following the ketogenic diet alongside an insulin regimen might (carry) a higher risk of hypoglycemia (low blood sugar).” Medical News Today.

This is why, even though Keto has helped a lot of people — both diabetic and otherwise — the American Diabetes Association (ADA) does not recommend it over any other.

“Every person has different dietary needs,” (Medical News Today).

In light of this, your optimum diet should be based on your current eating habits, preferences, and a target weight or blood sugar level for you, rather than, as Drew puts it: “A band-aid solution… (that can) actually worsen insulin resistance.”

Also, according to him, unless you are incredibly well informed and smart about what you eat, you are liable to consume too much saturated fat on the Keto diet, becoming “lean on the outside, (and) fat on the inside.”

“I don’t think bacon, eggs, butter and coconut oil should make the bulk of your daily calories especially when they’re replacing known healthy foods like fibre-rich, nutrient-dense, and antioxidant-rich fruit, legumes and starchy vegetables.”

All up: whether you are diabetic or not — but especially if you are — check with your doctor (and keep checking in regularly, and getting blood work done) before and during going Keto, and create a specialised diet plan, ideally with a nutritionist.

10 Stylish Yoga Brands For Men Who Think They’re Cooler Than Gandhi
10 Stylish Yoga Brands For Men Who Think They’re Cooler Than Gandhi

Men’s yoga clothing may seem like a farfetched subject to some, becuase if we’re being honest, traditionally, yoga isn’t the coolest or manliest activity out there. But there are a whole host of benefits you can get from practising yoga, including improved flexibility, posture, strength, sleep quality, focus, cardiovascular health, and reduced stress and anxiety.

These benefits are becoming increasingly important to men and yoga is one of the best ways to get all of them in one swift hit. Plus, yoga is also a great way to meet women… If you’re ready to give yoga a chance – which, frankly, you should – here’s a few things you should know before you start.

Men’s Yoga Clothing: Things To Look Out For

When it comes to yoga, you need to look out for clothing that’s comfortable, suitable, and flexible.

Flexibility

Flexibility is a requisite across the board for yoga pants, shorts, and tops so make sure they’re roomy enough for you to pull off your death-defying poses (or just downward dog).

Fitment

The general rule for standard yoga is not too tight, not too loose. For hot yoga, however, the rules change. It’s all about skin-tight gear, singlets, and short tights.

Breathability

Look for fabrics that are made to be breathable. There are polyester fabrics out there these days which cater to this with their dri-fit technology. Just don’t go standard polyester as you’ll be sweating bullets and stinking up the yoga studio.

Colours

You’re the yogi so colours are open to personal preference. We suggest you don’t go full Richard Simmons in 2019, though.

Michael Fassbender Just Pulled Off One Of The Hardest Suit Colours For Men
Michael Fassbender Just Pulled Off One Of The Hardest Suit Colours For Men

Magneto helmet comes off, white suit goes on. And with that simple move, Michael Fassbender just proved why he’s the best dressed X-Men in the game.

It was all about the Dark Phoenix premiere in Hollywood overnight with the X-Men stars stepping out to launch the film. At the top of that list was Fassbender who pulled off a winning number in an Italian style white suit complete with fat lapels, double jacket pockets and a simple pair of loafers. Timepiece? Didn’t even need one.

It’s a rather well-known fact that white suits aren’t the easiest looks to rock when compared to navy or grey suits. This is because the suit is made to draw attention so every detail needs to be spot on. Fassbender played it safe here with a metallic grey checked tie and white shirt. What’s most important with a suit of this nature is the fitment. It’s been perfectly tailored to fit the German-Irish actor which puts him ahead of other cast members like Nicholas Hoult and James McAvoy.

His co-star chose the casual route with a teal suit sans tie or accessories. An interesting colour but otherwise a rather mediocre look.

Young gun Nicholas Hoult on the other hand went full 70s disco with his own teal suit complete with oversized lapels, mustard yellow shirt and a pair of serious bell bottoms from the darkest corners of Mick Jagger’s closet. It was nicely polished off with a square timepiece from Jaeger-LeCoultre – a similar one that Pierce Brosnan rocked recently.

ATO Investigates ‘Fashionable’ Australian Office Workers For $1.5 Billion Worth Of Dodgy Wardrobe Claims
ATO Investigates ‘Fashionable’ Australian Office Workers For $1.5 Billion Worth Of Dodgy Wardrobe Claims

Civil servants are known more for their leisurely processing speeds and cheap nylon shirts than they are for fashion. However, the wall of bureaucracy is now set to crash down upon Australia’s overdressed citizenry, who have made a habit of claiming upwards of $1.5 billion dollars a year in ‘uniform’ expenses.

The problem is, according to ATO stats, there’s no way that many Aussies work in a profession that qualifies them for a uniform claim. In fact, unless you are a tradie or a chef, any ‘uniform’ claim you have previously made has probably been illicit.

But that hasn’t stopped Sydney’s overdressed office workers from trying to claim their Patagonia jackets and wireless headphones, nor Melbourne’s hipster-baristas from trying to get a rebate on their monthly ASOS order of black t-shirts (head on over to the ATO’s website if you don’t believe us; both are illicit claims).

As the Sydney Morning Herald reported yesterday, “Six million Aussies claimed a whopping $1.5 billion in clothing deductions last year — a figure that would mean one in two taxpayers must wear specific uniforms or protective gear to work.”

However, “You only really need to look around the people that you know to know it’s not half the population that can claim, ATO assistant commissioner Karen Foat told the SMH.

“It’s pretty rare that anyone in an office would have a legitimate claim.”

She then said that “clothing and laundry” claims have been targeted by the ATO ever since $1.8 billion was claimed in 2017.

“We’ve seen people who are stockbrokers claiming for their suits — their everyday suits,” she added, explaining that for something to be tax deductible “it has to be occupation-specific… like a chef’s outfit, or protective, like steel-capped boots.”

Another point of confusion is the hospitality industry, where you can claim for a “full outfit” with distinctive markings or logos, but not for a pair of jeans and a black shirt (the ubiquitous, non-claimable uniform of most cafes in the country).

“To qualify for a deduction,” the SMH added, “You must have also spent the money (or done or paid for the laundry) yourself and not been reimbursed at work.”

Feeling guilty about outsourcing all your dry cleaning? You’re not alone.

“One quarter of these ($1.5 billion in) claims sit right at $150, which is the threshold at which you have to provide a receipt.”

Sound like you? This is what you could be up for.

“If we find that people are actually misleading us on purpose, then penalties can be applied,” Ms Foat told the SMH.

How much exactly?

“Fines vary depending on the individual case.”

Hmmm. Seems worth the risk. I mean: watch yourself. The ATO is as slow-moving as fashion is fickle. But once you get their attention they pursue like Ramsay Bolton’s bloodthirsty hounds.

Don’t believe us? Just ask Paul Hogan. So dress how you like — just don’t claim your Yeezy’s at EOFY.

I Switched From iPhone To Pixel For 30 Days; Here’s The Cold Hard Truth About Making The Leap
I Switched From iPhone To Pixel For 30 Days; Here’s The Cold Hard Truth About Making The Leap

iPhones are as ubiquitous in the hands of ‘creatives’ as Steve Jobs’ black turtleneck is in the wardrobe of angsty French intellectuals. However, although Apple has branded itself as the sexiest purveyor of silicon alive, times change and so does the market.

As I recently discovered, Google’s top-end Android — the Pixel 3 — is a worthy replacement for the iPhone. Once you get your head around it. And with a price of $1,199, the Google Pixel 3 is definitely worth considering, even if you have been an Apple fanboi since Limewire was alive and streaming.

Scary? Sure. But with the iPhone XR coming in at $1,229 and the iPhone XS rattling the piggy bank at $1,629, as your old iPhone reaches obsolescence, it’s worth remembering there’s other tech in the sea.

Take it from me: a long-time Apple user who has spent the last month in an open relationship with a curvy new Google Pixel 3 and my trusty old iPhone 8. From getting butterflies around my new crush to missing the comfort of my old faithful, here’s the cold hard truth about switching from an Apple iPhone 8 to a Google Pixel 3.

1. Switching really isn’t as bad as you think it is.

In the nervous waiting period between order and arrival, my colleagues warned me it would be like learning to use my hands again. For the first few days they were right. However, the little things that bugged me soon became native, and after a couple of weeks everything felt natural.

2. It has the best camera of any smartphone on the market.

It can’t do much about my self-indulgent selfies, but Google Pixel 3’s Night Sight has redeemed my reputation for posting images so grainy that people assume they must not have loaded yet, while Portrait Mode has convinced me I should start a food blog.

Top Shot is also quite useful, automatically recommending you the best pictures (where no one is blinking etc.). However, I tend to ignore it and just pick the one I look best in — my best friend’s unflattering side of the face be damned. After all: you can’t let Google win every time, can you?

Also: the three dual front-facing cameras help you take group selfies with ease (although I am still waiting on a piece of tech that will reduce the tricep cramp associated with this activity) and Google Lens helps you identify cool clothes of random, stylish commuters, while Super Res helps you zoom in without taking a blurry image (although it does take a couple of weeks to stop trying to zoom in as you would on an iPhone).

To see what you can do with the Pixel 3 camera, check out the photos of D’Marge’s editor-at-large.

3. Buying apps for the second time is not ideal.

When you’re using a $1,199 phone you probably shouldn’t complain about having to re-purchase a couple of $4 apps. But still, realising I no longer had TripView and missing my bus kind of sucked.

4. Life after iMessage isn’t as bad as you think.

Despite News.com’s warning that the ‘green text bubble’ could decrease my chances of getting a Tinder date, my one-liners receive the same luke-warm reception as ever. Also: Whatsapp, Facebook Messenger and Instagram DM‘s are where it’s at these days anyway. And Android has its own messenger system for your browser. Admittedly: this won’t work if your co-workers have Macbooks (but this isn’t so much a Pixel flaw as a result of two competing megaliths).

5. File transfer between competing operating systems is tricky.

I may have left Apple but I will always love Airdrop. That said, Android Beam, the Google Pixel 3’s file transfer system is fine if you are trying to share with another Android user. However, file-sharing between Mac and Android is still an issue (we’ve found the easiest way is to use Dropbox or Whatsapp).

6. Energy saving mode is the best thing since sliced bread.

Provided your Wifi and Bluetooth are turned off you can get an easy two days of battery life — it just means you have to forego the services of “Hey Google” (Google’s version of Siri). I also found that compared to my (fairly old) iPhone, not only did the Google Pixel 3 battery last longer, but it also drained at a more predictable pace (as well as charging quicker).

7. The lack of iTunes forced me to get with the times.

I initially missed my inbuilt podcast app and the comfort of knowing my music and videos didn’t have to travel through the airways to get to me. However, thanks to downloading Spotify and taking advantage of the free 6-month subscription to Youtube Premium that comes with a Google Pixel 3, I am now no longer living in 2009.

8. The Pixel’s hotspotting is infinitely more reliable.

There’s nothing worse than sitting in a meeting, trying to hotspot your laptop with your phone, only to be met with an insouciant iPhone (anecdotal evidence suggests I am not the only one who has suffered this fate). However, thus far, this has not happened with The Google Pixel 3.

9. Google Chrome’s personalised homepage is a worthy Apple News replacement

It’s a nice touch that my Pixel’s Chrome web browser syncs with Google Chrome on my computer, which I was actually using already instead of Safari (#confessionsofanapplefanboi).

10. Setting the alarm reminded me of dial-up internet… in a good way.

To set your morning alarm you don’t scroll through a list of hours then minutes as you do on an iPhone; you drag your finger around a clock face until it lands on the right hour, then do the same with the minutes, all to a rather pleasurable metacarpal vibration.

11. It charges really quickly.

And it goes even faster if you plug your Macbook Pro charger into it (one area where Google and Apple have come to an uneasy truce?).

12. Customisation of the home screen is kind of a big deal.

You can make your diary always visible and make various other adjustments. Trust us: your boss will thank you. Also, even though I find iPhones more intuitive (largely because I have been using them for the last 10 years), I found the Google Pixel’s features (particularly the camera) allowed you to do more, once you got your head around using them.

13. The Pixel gives you unlimited online storage.

After hitting the iCloud paywall a few times it’s nice to know Google will let me amass as large a digital horde as I can manage.

14. Google Assistant is a worthy replacement for Siri.

No major differences — they both work well.

15. Transferring from an iPhone to a Google Pixel 3 is remarkably simple.

As long as they are both fully charged this is a relatively painless process, where you send all your (free) apps, contacts and data down a cable and into the Pixel.

16. The Pixel’s ‘button on the back’ is more intuitive than the iPhone’s ‘thumb on the front’.

Some may miss Apple’s facial recognition system, but I got used to The Google Pixel 3’s fingerprint scanner reasonably quickly.

17. Sending photos from the Pixel to an iPhone using MMS will result in significant loss of image quality.

This can be easily avoided by using Dropbox or Whatsapp though.

The Truth About Barcelona’s Iconic Grid Layout
The Truth About Barcelona’s Iconic Grid Layout

Barcelona’s legendary grid layout puts modern city planners to shame. And although Gaudi (proud dad to both La Sagrada Familia and Park Güell) is the most celebrated Catalan architect, Idelfons Cerdà i Sunyer is the one who had the vision and the diplomatic skills to implement Barcelona’s iconic grid layout in the 19th century.

Giving up his career as a civil engineer, Cerdà ran for Parliament in order to enact his Barcelona-vision on a higher plain.

“In the mid 1850s Cerdà… wins a seat in Spanish Parliament, and gets to work. He drafted groundbreaking legislation that would enable the government to have the power to radically alter the face and shape of the city, and in 1859 he revealed his plan to reshape Barcelona forever,” (Type 7).

After a revision or dos the polymath convinced his fellow politicians to put his plan into action, inventing a new word in the process: “Urbanización”. The rest is history.

Pharrell Williams Actually Rocked A $983,000 Watch With Crocs & Socks
Pharrell Williams Actually Rocked A $983,000 Watch With Crocs & Socks

What can we say…when you’re Pharrell Williams you can wear what you damn well want to a red carpet film premiere – and that includes a US$983,000 Richard Mille RM 25-01 Tourbillon Adventure Watch alongside your rainbow Crocs with white socks.

The iconic ‘IDGAF’ look has always been the domain of Pharrell who often opts for changing up suits and tuxedos for the latest trends in streetwear and urban style experimentation. This was definitely the case when the 46-year-old music maestro championed the footwear combo of retired chefs and nursing home kingpins with a blue hoodie and shorts at the premiere Of The Black Godfather in Hollywood overnight.

We’ve spoken about this particular watch on Pharrell before when he recently paired it with leopard print, but his latest outing with Crocs and socks takes the menswear style game to the next level. I.e. is it a outrageous look…or is Pharrell just so far ahead in the fashion game that we don’t even know it? We’re unsure ourselves, but it’s worth a laugh from the photo above.

The bulky military watch is limited to just twenty pieces worldwide with Pharrell and Sylvester Stallone taking up two of those coveted ownership positions.

The luxury watchmaker created it as a tribute to Stallone’s enduring career as Hollywood’s go-to tough guy. Whilst it may look outlandish the RM 25-01 is purely tactical in its delivery. It employs a lightweight tourbillon movement with titanium components for precise timekeeping without sacrificing wearability. A unique bezel option for the watch sees a Grade 5 titanium lid with a mirrored internal face for easy compass legibility.

But the real kicker? The watch features five water purification capsules concealed in a Carbon TPT compartment for emergencies. Each capsule will create a litre of safe drinking water within a time frame of 30 minutes to 2 hours depending on the fluid’s natural pollutants. A natural rubber strap in obligatory camouflage is included with the piece.

So…anyone keen to try rocking Crocs with socks to the office? Do let us know if you still have a job by the week’s end.
