Here's How To Get Ripped Without A Gym Membership
Here's How To Get Ripped Without A Gym Membership

We’ve all heard the phrase “If you’ve got a door, you’ve got a gym” – and ironically amongst all the satire, what is proclaimed is indeed true.

The common question I receive all the time is, “Scotty, I don’t have access to a gym…can I still get fit and build muscle?”

Unequivocally, yes.

The easiest way for me to draw supporting evidence is to simply look at myself as an example. Do I train in a gym? Yes, I do. But, remember, I train for function. Function doesn’t require a framework. Function equals freedom.

The majority of my workouts consist of lunging, climbing, jumping, pulling, pushing, hanging, crawling and slamming. You can see that the common denominator amongst these movements is that they can be done anywhere.

See below.

It’s time to conclusively put to rest the notion that you need to be training at a gym to achieve the body you want because it’s just not true.

If you’re on a tight budget and a gym membership is out of the question or you’re just someone who doesn’t particularly feel comfortable in the gym, don’t stress. Here’s how you can get ripped for free.

Start By Starting

Do it, do it now – Arnold Schwarzenegger

Do something now – don’t wait. You can’t feed yourself excuses like “I’ll start tomorrow”. Those are gym-goer excuses.

Whether it’s the spare room, the garage, the backyard, the hill at the end of the street and/or the park down the road, the sooner you start, the sooner you’ll feel better (you can thank endorphins for that).

Create Your Own Gym

The world is your gym

Make your own exercises and get creative. Run up a hill backwards and on the way down crawl…backwards. Opportunity is only bound by your creativity. If your training is stagnating, give it more thought and take inspiration from the environment and obstacles around you.

Embrace The Superset

Stack it up

What I love about functional training is that you can truly turn up the intensity and put yourself in a zone which will challenge you mentally as much as it will physically.

Supersetting your workouts is a fantastic way to build muscle and burn fat simultaneously.

Here’s an example:

  • Tuck Jumps to Sprints
  • Burpee to Broad Jump
  • Bear Crawl to Rope Climb
  • Pushup to Plank

Any of the above mentioned examples are bound to get your heart racing in no time.

Intensity breeds improvement so drop the self-doubt and anxiety; you’re not in the gym and you don’t have to worry about who’s watching.

Put yourself into a zone where all you can focus on is getting out the next breath, whilst performing an explosive movement at maximal intensity. Remember, a tight budget is not a barrier to a healthier life but a small mind is.

Whatever your circumstances, you can still create the life you want by simply opening your mind up to opportunity…and maybe opening your door for a run.

Better yet, join me outdoors, for the CT 6HR Challenge on September 9.

The Most Dangerous Sex Position For Penis Fractures Has Been Revealed
The Most Dangerous Sex Position For Penis Fractures Has Been Revealed

In IceCube’s famous words, “watch yourself before you wreck yourself”.

It’s just a little bent, it’s still good

This message has never been more significant than in today’s modern dating world, a place wrought with unknown dangers in the bedroom alongside some who just want to watch the world burn.

We’re talking about penis fractures and today researchers have discovered the sex position which holds the title as the one most likely to cause it – ‘Doggy Style’. The study which was published in the journal Nature claims that this common position, where a man penetrates their partner from behind, had the highest chance of causing penile fracture. Coming in at a close second in the danger zone was the ‘Missionary Position’ – the orientation which sees a man is on top.

Coming to these surprising results was no easy feat. Researchers here had to delve into the sex lives of 90 patients aged between 18 and 66-years-old who had suffered from a penile fracture. They then split these injuries into categories across masturbation or penile manipulation, ‘man-on-top’ position, ‘doggy style’ position, ‘woman-on-top’ position, blunt trauma and ‘rolling over’ fracture.

In the findings it was concluded that sex had caused penile fracture in 69 (seriously) of those cases. Looking at the stats even closer, the researchers identified that 37 of those 90 cases had been caused by ‘Doggy Style’ whilst ‘Man-on-top’ had 23 cases against it and ‘woman-on-top’ had just nine.

This is serious stuff, men. The report came to the conclusion that, “the ‘Man-on-top’ and ‘Doggy Style’ positions showed more associations with bilateral fractures of the corpus cavernosum and urethral lesions.”

We think it means your penis could fall off, but don’t quote us on it. The bottom line is that it’s painful.

So your solution is simple: Don’t have sex, have sex but make sure you have a firm grasp of the hips as you enter the danger zone, or just star fish.

“The power is yours!” – Captain Planet.

Donald Glover's Tuxedo Was The Real Winner Of The Emmys
Donald Glover's Tuxedo Was The Real Winner Of The Emmys

He may have been the recipient of two shiny Emmys for his outstanding work on Atlanta, but Donald Glover is proving that greatness can also be attained beyond the cutting room floor.

We’re talking impeccable style and Glover proved that he was the leading man for the job when he rocked up to the event in a full purple Gucci tuxedo complete with contrasting yellow pocket square, classic white shirt and polished shoes.

Daring? Perhaps. We’re simply calling it the hottest look from the entire event, aided by its ability to stand out amongst a sea of classic monochrome and elegant restraint. And let’s make this clear when we say that this is no muted aubergine or eggplant hue. It’s a full blown Prince Purple which reaffirms that this is the hottest suit colour of 2017 – if you’re as game as Mr. Glover.

Now who said purple was a depressing colour. Would you rock the purple suit or tuxedo?

Check the gallery and let us know below.

Sleep Deprivation Could Be The Reason You're Single
Sleep Deprivation Could Be The Reason You're Single
Sleep Deprivation
I am Jack’s complete lack of sleep

Getting through the day when you’ve barely slept can be a nightmare. You’re bleary-eyed and fuzzy-brained, unfocused and irritable, jacked up on caffeine and ready to crash by mid-afternoon.

On top of all that, skimping on shuteye can spell disaster for your relationship. According to studies, sleep deprivation can take a serious toll on even the happiest couples.

The United States Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommends that people ages 18 to 60 get at least seven hours of sleep a day, but a growing number of adults are ‘short sleepers’ who regularly average fewer.

If your beauty rest isn’t so beautiful these days, are are five ways it could be negatively impacting your relationship with a significant other.

You Fight Dirty

All couples have disagreements, but how you disagree matters. A study at Ohio State University’s Institute for Behavioral Medicine Research found that high-functioning couples handle conflicts constructively, with humour and kindness. Sleep deprived couples, on the other hand, tend to display more negative emotions and handle conflict resolution with hostility.

You’re Less Attractive

Spending adequate time in slumberland is essential if you want to maintain your handsomeness. Humans not only desire good-looking partners, we also have a handful of psychological biases that makes us think attractive people are better people overall. The ‘physical attractiveness stereotype’ is a tendency to assume that individuals who are aesthetically attractive also possess other socially desirable personality traits, like confidence and intelligence. A Swedish study confirmed that sleep-starved people are perceived as less healthy and less attractive – and therefore less desirable – than their well-slept counterparts.

Your Sex Drive Is Shot

Sleep deprivation is linked to depleted energy, increased tension, low libido, and decreased interest in sex. If you have sleep apnea in addition to sleeping insufficient hours, you may also have low testosterone levels. In a study published in the Journal of Clinical Endocrinology & Metabolism in 2002, nearly half of male participants who suffered from severe sleep apnea also secreted abnormally low levels of testosterone during the night.

Your Funny Bone Is Broken

A good sense of humour is consistently rated as one of the most attractive qualities a man can have, but it fluctuates with your ability to get a good night’s sleep. Humour requires high-level cognition, which is impaired by a lack of quality slumber. A 2006 study discovered a link between an inability to appreciate verbal humour and sleep loss – one the couldn’t be fixed with caffeine or other stimulants.

You Don’t Express Gratitude

Both partners must feel appreciated for a relationship to stay strong. Unfortunately, according to researchers from the University of California at Berkeley, sleep deprivation can leave you “too tired to say thanks,” making your other half feel taken for granted. “Poor sleep may make us more selfish as we prioritise our own needs over our partner’s,” says Amie Gordon, a UC Berkeley psychologist and lead investigator of the study. “Make sure to say ‘thanks’ when your partner does something nice.”

Scientists Have Some Really Good News For Bald Men
Scientists Have Some Really Good News For Bald Men

Here’s one for you, balding friends. Scientists from the University of Pennsylvania have today released findings from a new study which suggests that bald men are perceived as more dominant, confident and attractive.

Say what now?

The findings come from three studies conducted by the researchers who based their conclusions on the opinions of both sexes.

In the first study, a group of 59 students (35 female) were shown images of men with shaved heads. What they found was that bald men were perceived as more dominant when compared to similar men with full heads of hair.

In the second study, a larger pool of 344 subjects were used where slightly more than half were women. Two images of the same man were shown to the subjects – one with their hair digitally removed and the other left as normal.

“Instead of spending billions each year trying to reverse or cure their hair loss, the counterintuitive prescription of this research to men experiencing male pattern baldness is to shave their heads.”

What they discovered from this experiment was that the man without hair was perceived as more dominant, taller by almost an inch and 13 percent stronger than the same man with hair.

In the final and third study, researchers took 552 participants and got them to score both verbal and written descriptions of different men. From those samples, it was concluded that men with shaved heads received to most points for masculinity.

It wasn’t all good news for bald men though. The researchers also concluded from the studies that bald men looked almost four years older than their hairier counter-sapien.

The study even suggested men go against the grain when it came to turning back the years to maintain their physical appearance.

“Instead of spending billions each year trying to reverse or cure their hair loss, the counterintuitive prescription of this research to men experiencing male pattern baldness is to shave their heads.”

“Doing so will increase their interpersonal standing on a host of dominance-related traits, including their potential for leadership. At the very least, these benefits may offer palliative relief from the psychological costs associated with natural hair loss.”

“These men might better improve their well-being by finishing what Mother Nature has started.”

Here's The Latest Way To Protect Your Balls From Smartphone Radiation
Here's The Latest Way To Protect Your Balls From Smartphone Radiation

Balls. They’re pretty darned important to men these days, an observation that came to head when Frenchman Arthur Menard sat down with a few friends to discuss testicles over dinner.

Always swim between the flags

Whilst it may sound like the lead up to a crude joke, rest assured that this is actually a story about entrepreneurship and innovation. After chatting away with said friends, Menard finally came to the idea of Spartan underwear – a high-tech pair of briefs specifically engineered to protect a man’s jewels and sperm from the radiation which permeates today’s digital society.

Think Wi-Fi, smartphones, smart watches and any other modern device which emits electromagnetic radiation and your sperm’s fertility rate basically has something to worry about (according to past studies).

At the moment the hard evidence linking radiation with lower fertility rates have yet to be confirmed, but there’s no doubt that sperm count has definitely been on the decrease amongst western men over the past forty years.

“The high-tech garment borrows inspiration from the radiation blocking devices such as microwaves and space suits.”

Paired with the fact that men aren’t going to give up their smartphones anytime soon, Menard and his co-founder Pierre-Louis Boyer devised an audacious plan to bring sperm and smartphones together into a single harmonious world.

Spartan underwear was born. The high-tech garment borrows inspiration from the radiation blocking devices such as microwaves and space suits. The idea itself is based on the Faraday cage, a concept discovered by Michael Faraday back in 1836.

This silver intertwined cotton essentially forms a cage around a man’s package, blocking it from any electromagnetic field to ensure the wellbeing of your grandchildren within.

What it won’t protect you from though is a swift swipe of of the gonads by a flying object or worse, a head-butting child. But we digress. Menard chose the silver/cotton fabric make up because it’s more comfortable than regular fabric, has natural anti-bacterial properties and boasts up to 99% radiation blocking.

Those keen on trying out a pair of these high-tech sperm savers can do so via Spartan’s crowd funding page or website. Each pair costs between Prices range from $47 and $60 which puts it squarely in the region of Calvin Klein albeit with added peace of mind.

Porsche’s Upcoming Tesla Killer Is A Lot More Affordable Than You Think
Porsche’s Upcoming Tesla Killer Is A Lot More Affordable Than You Think

The world is now closer to receiving a real Tesla competitor with Porsche announcing the date and pricing for the production version of its Mission E electric supercar.

The concept which was revealed two years ago was designed to showcase the German automaker’s E-Performance line which focuses on making their future range of hybrid and full electric cars move with haste and efficiency.

Fast forward to this year’s Frankfurt Auto Show and Porsche CEO Oliver Blume has told Car Magazine that public trials of the car will be happening soon whilst the final production model is “very close” to completion.

The juicy news though? Blume is expecting the Mission E to arrive at the end of 2019 with a price tag from just US$85,000 (AU$106,000 before adjustments).

That still puts it a step ahead of the Tesla Model S in terms of pricing (Tesla Model S 100D starts from $94,000 in the U.S), but what you’re getting is proven German engineering with an illustrious track record across various motorsport disciplines. In other words it’s the kind of reputation which will ensure the Mission E can corner and sprint from 0-100km/h in under 3.5 seconds via a 440kW (600hp) electric motor.

Porsche have also tinkered with the battery pack to include shorter charging times without sacrificing the feel of a lightweight sportscar. As such, drivers can expect a range of more than 500km on a single charge whilst the car’s 350kW fast-charging system can charge the battery up to 80 percent (roughly 400km range) in just 15 minutes.

We’ll bring you more news as it arrives.

World's Best Sustainable Travel Experiences Named For 2017

Seven resorts and individuals have been honoured by the PURE Life Experiences awards for their contributions to sustainable and experiential travel.

Founded in 2009, PURE Life Experiences is a hand-selected global community of leading experts in experiential travel with a focus on conservation and transformation. These ‘PUREists’ are united by a mission to catalyse a new kind of adventure for high-end clients, one that fosters personal connections and encourages a conscientious approach to the environment and local communities.

PURE life’s tailored excursions invite travellers to reconnect with themselves and their world, while protecting the planet and giving back.

The PURE Awards celebrate the best of the best in sustainable travel. This year, more than 200 applications were submitted in categories including Transformational Travel, Conservation and Sustainability, Community Engagement, and Mindful Design. The winners were announced in Marrakech on Tuesday, September 12. Meet them below.

Transformational Travel: Cascada Expediciones / Ecocamp Patagonia for The Dientes Trek

The Dientes Trek is a true wilderness experience. With virtually no trail infrastructure, the immersion in nature and disconnect from the world is designed to be absolute. There is only the traveller, silence, and the mighty peaks and waterways of Tierra del Fuego. The trek has been designed to leave travellers with a greater appreciation for and understanding of the power of nature, as well as themselves as humans in the world, where actions have real consequences for the future of the planet.

Conservation & Sustainability: Singita, for solar technology at Singita Kruger National Park

Singita’s solar project aims to reduce reliance on fossil fuels by harnessing energy from this sun-rich part of the world to provide solar power. In 2015, 1,188 photovoltaic solar panels were installed and connected to state-of-the-art batteries and inverters to power lodges. In 2017, the Tesla Powerpack system was introduced. The combination of solar and Powerpack enables sustainable energy generation, consumption, and storage. The system has already reduced diesel generator usage by over 70 percent and is forecast to reduce annual carbon emissions by 1,000 tonnes.

Innovative & Engaging Marketing: Great Plains Conservation, vinyl revival

A campaign of four pre-show emails followed a vinyl theme of new tracks on side one and classic hits on side two, inspired by everything from Bowie’s Berlin trilogy to classic tracks from Great Plains. The result was a sell-out show, increased brand awareness for Great Plains Conservation, and feedback from the non-trade show audience.

Community Engagement: Oceania Expeditions, Karawara culture on Kabakon Island

Oceania Expeditions invites guests to swap their current reality for life on a secluded island, under the guidance of the neighbouring Karawara people in the tropics of Papua New Guinea. Karawara islanders visit guests daily on Kabakon island, sharing their extensive knowledge and rich customs, and teaching how to forage, hunt, weave, connect and play. Guests are then left to their own devices until the next visit. The project offers an additional income stream for the local community and reignites pride in the continuation of local traditions and cultures.

Contribution to Experiential Travel: Mike Reimer, Churchill Wild

Mike Reimer, co-founder of Churchill Wild, is a true entrepreneur and adventurer. The first to offer walking safaris through polar-bear-inhabited regions of northern Manitoba, he’s always one step ahead, planning new experiences for guests. From safe, on-the-ground polar-bear encounters, to an innovative way for people to snorkel with wild beluga whales, to a remote tundra camp set up in the Barren Lands for an Arctic glamping experience, Reimer’s insatiable curiosity for what’s possible keeps guests intrigued and engaged.

Mindful Design: Wilderness Safaris, Bisate Lodge

Bisate Lodge’s sophisticated architecture and interior design is rooted in Rwandan building tradition. The spherical, thatched structures echo the thousands of hills that dot the Rwandan landscape, while the richly detailed interiors feature surfaces and screens made from a variety of woven materials. Bisate offers accommodations that are steeped in local design, culture, and traditional architecture.

Unsung Hero: Lewis Mangaba, African Bush Camps

Lewis Mangaba is more than a guide for African Bush Camps at Somalisa in Zimbabwe. He is a storyteller, a poet — a man who inspires passion for preserving wildlife heritage to all who encounter him. Mangaba’s intuition in the bush ensures a fantastic experience for his guests. He’s affectionately known as the medicine man, and once trekked deep into the wilds of Mana Pools to find a plant to treat mosquito bites after a guest, who had been bitten, was averse to repellents.
