Breaking Bad & Better Call Saul’s Bob Odenkirk To Star In New Show

Bob Odenkirk, best known for playing Saul Goodman in Breaking Bad, and its prequel series, Better Call Saul has just landed his next gig.

According to Variety, the Emmy-winning actor, who also recently starred in the 2021 film, Nobody, is set to star in the upcoming series, Straight Man – a dramedy that’s currently in development at AMC (the same entertainment company behind Breaking Bad and Better Call Saul).

Straight Man will be based on Richard Russo’s 1997 novel of the same name. The series will see Odenkirk star as William Henry Devereaux, Jr., a chairman of the English department at an underfunded Pennsylvanian college, who is going through a mid-life crisis.

Odenkirk isn’t just starring, he’s also executive producing alongside Aaron Zelman, best known for producing Law & Order, and Paul Lieberstein, best known for producing The Office. Both Zelman and Lieberstein will also act as showrunners for Straight Man.

Odenkirk is simply thrilled to be working alongside Zelman and Lieberstein on this ‘smart’ project.

“I loved Paul and Aaron’s take on Richard’s excellent, entertaining novel.

Once again a project with AMC with a focus on character depth and sensitivity…  I am drawn to the tone of humanity and humour in the novel and I look forward to playing this role – something lighter than my recent projects but still closely observed and smart.”

President of entertainment and AMC Studios for AMC Networks, Dan McDermott, on the other hand, simply praised Odenkirk and basically said what we’re all thinking:

“Bob Odenkirk is just as good as it gets.”

Currently, Straight Man is slated for a 2023 release.

‘We’ve Evolved’: Abercrombie & Fitch Respond To Damning Netflix Documentary
‘We’ve Evolved’: Abercrombie & Fitch Respond To Damning Netflix Documentary

American fashion brand Abercrombie & Fitch built their image on a potent mix of sex and wholesomeness (as a Netflix release put it). But it also has a history of openly exclusive hiring practices – which an upcoming documentary is set to focus on.

First: a little context. Most of us will know Abercrombie and Fitch for using incredibly good looking men and women in its advertising, and for having male models with ridiculous six-packs waiting to greet all customers at the doors of its flagship stores.

Abercrombie & Fitch experienced huge popularity in the late ’90s and early ’00s and created spin-off lifestyle brands Hollister and women’s brand, Gilly Hicks. Now, a Netflix documentary will focus on this popularity, along with the factors that went into it becoming one of the biggest names in global fashion. Primarily, the exclusionary approach to hiring staff.

The documentary, called White Hot: The Rise & Fall of Abercrombie & Fitch will debut on Netflix on April 19th. In the meantime, Netflix recently released a trailer, which you can watch below. The trailer reveals the various people who have contributed to the documentary, which includes former A&F staff and industry insiders.

The main topic the trailer, and documentary focus on, is Abercrombie’s ‘shopping experience’ which was recognised by the “the smell of Abercrombie” (the brand’s signature scent ‘Fierce’ was sprayed around the stores), “nightclub beats”, dark lighting and topless male models at the entrance.

We also hear from former staff who explain how they lost their job based solely on their looks. Former CEO Mike Jeffries (who left the company in 2014) is noted as saying the brand was only for “the good-looking, cool kids,” and added that there were people who didn’t belong in Abercrombie clothing when explaining why you couldn’t find women’s clothing above size 10.

He was even quoted as proudly saying, “Are we exclusionary? Absolutely.”

As People states, the documentary also hears from a teen who was unable to get a job at an Abercrombie store because her hijab violated the store’s “look policy.” This discrimination, along with several other instances of a similar nature, were filed as lawsuits. People adds that Abercrombie “agreed to a $40 million settlements and revised its hiring policies,” in response to a lawsuit that claimed the brand discriminated against African Americans, Latinos, Asian Americans and women in general.

Abercrombie has responded directly to the upcoming documentary, taking to Instagram to release a statement.

“In the spirit of transparency, we want to directly acknowledge the news of an upcoming documentary that will feature Abercrombie & Fitch and focus on an era that took place under previous leadership,” it starts.

“While the problematic elements of that era have already been subject to wide and valid criticism over the years, we want to be clear that they are actions, behaviours and decisions that would not be permitted or tolerated at the company now.”

“As we’ve evolved, we’ve felt the love from this community. We are grateful for the support you have given us as we’ve taken intentional steps to be inclusive and welcoming to everyone.”

“Thank you for giving us the chance to show you who Abercrombie is today, and for being a part of who we will be tomorrow. We know the work is never done and remain committed to continually creating a company of which we can all be proud.”

The post has received much praise, with comments including:

“Abercrombie had the greatest glow up of all time and I STAND by that,” “the evolution of Abercrombie under the new leadership is extremely admirable. That’s how you turn a company around!” and “As a former manger / employee who swore I’d never work for the company again, I am SO proud of the steps Abercrombie has taken to become more inclusive, accepting, loving – and let’s face it – just overall BETTER! The clothes are better, the approach is better, the mentality is better. Thanks for doing better.”

Indeed, one look at the Abercrombie website today and things have most certainly changed, but is it all a bit too late?

You’re greeted with a large banner on the home page, reading “This is Abercrombie Today. Today – and every day – we’re leading with purpose, championing inclusivity and creating a sense of belonging.”

You’ll also see an array of images showing men and women of all races and sizes, and with virtually no shirtless male jocks in the process. The style and aesthetic of clothing has changed too. The company’s signature skinny jeans may remain, but the rest of the collections appear to be appealing to a more mature male audience, as opposed to the senior high school students in North America.

Abercrombie is now most definitely a more inclusive brand that has the potential for greater appeal. But with such a troubled past, can it ever fully recover?

17 Best Smartwatches In 2022
17 Best Smartwatches In 2022

While it’s fair to say Apple spearheaded the movement to wear a computer on your wrist, smartwatches have actually been around in some form or another since the early 1900s. Obviously, they couldn’t perform the same functions as smartwatches today, but the idea of wearing something to offer convenience on your wrist is not a new one.

Apple, however, was the company to make smartwatches truly functional, and truly accessible, and just like the iPad, once you have one, it’s hard to imagine life without it. Since the introduction of the Apple Watch, a plethora of manufacturers have also followed suit, offering their own interpretation of what they believe makes a great smartwatch. Most combine the ability to make calls, stream music and send messages with fitness functions such as GPS tracking, heart rate monitors and waterproof capabilities so you can even wear them swimming.

They represent yet another step of technological evolution, and we won’t be surprised if one day, smartwatches transform into small chips that get injected into your skin. Freaky. But let’s not get distracted. For now, smartwatches are getting smarter every year, so choosing the right smartwatch for your needs isn’t as easy as it once was.

That’s why we’ve put together this list of the best smartwatches you can currently buy, covering their main features (i.e., why you’ll want one) and that all-important battery life.

Best Men’s Shampoo 2022

The sheer volume of men’s shampoo products available is enough to send any well-groomed gent into overwhelm, so we’ve done the hard work for you and picked out some of the best men’s shampoo brands on the market today. Unfortunately, investing in a new shampoo isn’t as easy as just buying a new shampoo, but there are a few things you need to look out for.The main influential factor that will determine what shampoo you buy will depend on your hair type. For the most part, picking up shampoo for ‘normal’ hair will work for you just fine as it won’t strip away any natural oils. However, you will also find shampoo for oily hair or dry hair on the market, along with those that are designed to combat dandruff, for example. Unless you do have excessively oily hair, or an oily scalp or have dandruff – which, by the way, is identified as thick flakes and irritated scalp, smaller fine white flakes are more likely to be because of a dry scalp, which can be fixed with a moisturising shampoo – then just stick to ‘normal’ shampoo. So, now you should hopefully know which shampoo is for you, it’s time to reveal the best shampoo for men currently available.

Best Military Haircuts For Men in 2022
Best Military Haircuts For Men in 2022

You may or may not be aware that the military (or army, whatever you want to call it) has been the source for many of the fashion and style choices we continue to make today. There’s the obvious one of khaki green and the variations in colour that come with it, through to specific items of clothing such as the trench coat, to pattern styles such as camouflage. The military can also be credited with several haircuts that continue to be popular, decades after they were first seen in the barracks and trenches.

Traditionally incredibly short, these haircuts – such as the buzz cut, ‘Mighty Fine’, crew cut, high and tight or a ‘number zero’, could present a brand new look for you, and while many of them might be a little daring compared to what you’re used to, especially if you don’t tend to rock short hair, choosing one next time you visit the barber could be the best decision you ever made.

Why Are Military Haircuts Short?

We’ve likely all seen images of army recruits shaving their hair down to the skin, but have you ever known why that is? The practice of shaving the hair down to the shortest possible length without using a razor is most commonly associated with the United States and is said to be for both physical and psychological reasons.

It’s claimed shaving the head was to help prevent the chance of recruits catching diseases (such as head lice) and it also meant opposing soldiers couldn’t grab the hair and hold them back while they took their life.

Making all recruits look the same was also said to help instil more of a team mentality, and to remove the individual personalities of the soldiers. Perhaps it’s ironic that today military haircuts are used to help promote a sense of individuality.

So, what military haircuts for men are there and which ones are best suited to your personal style and face shape. Check out the following list of the best military hairstyles around, and if you’re in search of other hairstyle inspiration, check out our complete range of guides for various men’s hairstyles.

1. Buzz Cut / Induction Cut

The military haircut that started it all off. Also known as the induction cut, the buzz cut is, as we mentioned before, is the shortest possible haircut a man can get without using a razor to remove the last bit of stubble. Often given to new recruits within hours of them joining the army (quite literally upon induction), the buzz cut (which technically refers to hair that is cut to the same length all over using clippers) is the perfect choice for men who want a low maintenance style.

Best suited to those who have square or more oval-shaped heads (and especially those with a killer set of cheekbones) the induction cut is a thoroughly masculine look.

2. Crew Cut

The crew cut is most definitely inspired by the military, and was even seen atop the heads of soldiers during World War II – then referred to as a G.I. haircut. If you already sport short hair, the crew cut is a perfect option you need to try out. Coming under the term of buzz cut, by definition, a crew cut sees you sporting shot hair on top of the head, however it graduates in length from the front at the fringe to the crown at the back.

The slightly longer hair at the front can then be styled into a quiff or short pompadour, for example. Best suited to men with thick hair, a crew cut is a failsafe option for men everywhere.

The sides and back of the head can be styled in any way you see fit. The most foolproof option is to leave the hair one length all the way around (but shorter than the hair on top), although it’s possible to add a fade, side a high fade, into the mix, for a more updated and low maintenance look.

3. Ivy League

There is a great deal of crossover between the Ivy League and a crew cut – with some claiming the crew cut is actually called the Ivy League in the US – although there is less of precedence for short sides and back compared to that seen on the crew cut. A simple-to-achieve military haircut, the Ivy League name was coined due to it being popular with men who attended the Ivy League universities, such as Yale, Harvard and Columbia, making it an incredibly preppy hairstyle.

Similar to the crew cut, the Ivy League does see a difference in length between the hair on top compared to the sides, with it then being possible for some extra styling. A great option for men with rectangle and square faces, the Ivy League is a clean, sharp and sophisticated haircut.

4. Fade

One of the most popular men’s hairstyles ever is the fade. The fade haircut has in itself a multitude of variations relating to both the hair on the sides of the head and the point at which it begins fading, to the length of hair on top of the head – such as a high fade or even a high and tight.

In order to get close to military specification, men should opt for a fade that goes incredibly short on the sides and back – a number 0/1 up to a number 2/3 – and keep the hair on top of the head as short as possible, while still allowing some length for styling. A fade can be combined with a crew cut, Ivy League or even a buzz cut – which would make it a skin fade – to create a head-turning look that screams individuality.

5. Regulation Cut

Ok, so we know we said military haircuts are traditionally cut short, but if you’re someone who enjoys a little bit of length atop their head, the regulation cut is the perfect option. Still with its roots in the army, the regulation cut is another that’s similar to the crew cut, but allows you to play around with the length of the hair on the sides.

Traditionally tapered down to a shorter length as it approaches the ears, you’re welcome to show some skin, or leave it covered up with something like a number 3, graduating up to a 4 or 5.

As for styling, because of the slightly extra length on top, you should be able to attempt a quiff, short pompadour or even something like a side-part or undercut, if you cut the hair on the sides and back to a much shorter length.

6. Flat Top

Think flat top and you’ll likely think of Dolph Lundgren in Rocky IV or Jamaican singer Grace Jones, but it is also very much a military hairstyle. To achieve a flat top, the hair needs to be cut relatively short, and to a uniform length, so that it stands upright on its own accord, so that the hairline is quite literally flat along the top. The sides and back of the head can be cut to varying lengths – such as one length all around, or they can be faded – which will cause different styles of look when viewed from the front.

If you think the flat top is for you – it works particularly well for those with afro hair – and you want to rock it for some time, you will need to visit the barber on a regular basis to keep everything trimmed to exact proportions, and you can choose to use some styling product such as a high-shine wax to keep it under control.

7. High And Tight

The high and tight haircut combines the best of the buzz cut, with elements of the fade, to create an incredibly modern hairstyle that can totally transform your look. In order for your hair to be classified as high and tight, it needs to be cut incredibly short on the back and sides, with no fading or tapering. Instead, it needs to be cut short up the entire side of the head to the point where it meets the hair on top of the head.

From here, the hair on top should also be cut short, but left slightly longer than the hair on the sides. Because the high and tight will inevitably put more attention on your whole face, you need to consider your face shape before you visit your barber. The high and tight works best on men with square, triangular or oval-shaped faces, and if you’re able to pull it off, makes for an incredibly military haircut.

8. Hard Undercut

The best example of the hard undercut in the military can be seen in Fury, starring Brad Pitt. While this military hairstyle does, in some way, go against the ‘rules’ of an army haircut, exhibiting long hair on top, it’s still one that evokes images of the military and of masculinity.

It offers up plenty of opportunity for styling, with the most obvious being the pompadour-style look that sees the hair styled up and then slicked back towards the back of the head. The sides, meanwhile, can be cut to a single short length, faded or tapered, depending on your personal preference.

Best Men’s Fragrances To Keep You Fresh For Under $100
Best Men’s Fragrances To Keep You Fresh For Under $100

In this day and age, colognes and men’s fragrances can be ridiculously expensive. So, for those of you who wear cologne daily and are sick of forking out loads of cash just to smell nice, and for those of you who are – c’mon, own up to it – cheapskates, may we suggest a solution? Cheap fragrances.

Cheap fragrances don’t necessarily smell, well, cheap and can even be long-lasting and high-quality. Some of the finest brands, such as Chanel and Dior, have affordable colognes in their range that smell just as good, if not better, than their most expensive colognes.

How to properly apply cologne

You don’t want to spray cologne all over you, as fragrances intensify over time. You just want a light spray on your neck and wrists; however, don’t spray one wrist and then rub your wrists together, as this will lessen the longevity of your cologne. Spray your neck and each wrist, extremely lightly.

If you really want to enhance your fragrance in warmer weather and you’re wearing shorts, try a light spray behind each knee too.
