64-Year-Old Man’s Stunning Workout Proves Age Really Is Just A Number
64-Year-Old Man’s Stunning Workout Proves Age Really Is Just A Number

You don’t have to let your fitness drop as you get more wrinkly. With high-profile celebrities such as The Rock, Mark Wahlberg, Terry Crews and even Lenny Kravitz all rocking ridiculously enviable rigs, achieved through a combination of serious workouts and smart fork shovelling, we’ve repeated this message time and time again here at DMARGE.But these guys have to ensure they look good so they can keep landing movie roles, or so they can have their photo grace the cover of magazines. What about the Average Joe? The guy who doesn’t go in search of fame, or for his poster to be hung up on bedroom walls all around the country? With less of an incentive, why would you commit yourself to keeping fit in your later years, as opposed to enjoying a well-earned retirement? It seems one man didn’t get the memo about easing up in your later years, as a video portraying a 64-year-old American has surfaced online – via Complex – showing him performing workouts and movements that most guys half his age would run away from. The man in the video on the original Ripright account has him tagged as @riprightshati, but the account no longer exists. His name is the least of our worries, however, as a man of his age shouldn’t be able to perform the spins and the muscle-ups on the chin-up bar that he does so smoothly in this video. [Watch above]Not only does he perform a faultless pull-up, he continues to lift his entire frame high up above the bar, a movement that much harder than getting upstairs without a stairlift. After spinning round the bar a couple of times like an Olympic gymnast, he then holds his body still, parallel to the floor, and pumps his legs forwards and backwards. Not only that, but he then twists his entire lower body, torching his obliques in the process, to move his legs once again. Best of all (or worst, depending on how you look at it) is he doesn’t even break a sweat. The amount of core strength he has makes us question our life choices and reassess our gym programs. The proclaimed “strongest 64 year old alive” appears in other videos on the Ripright account working out with guys much younger than him.Complex Instagram followers were also very enamoured with his Air Force Nikes. While it’s certainly uncommon to find someone of this man’s age in such incredible shape, with other names such as Greg Norman & Joe Rogan proving you really can get strong, even in your 50s and 60s, there is plenty of inspiration around for the older generation to get themselves ultra-fit, should they choose.

French Luxury Brand Longchamp Goes Old-School To Save The Planet
French Luxury Brand Longchamp Goes Old-School To Save The Planet

2021 is increasingly shaping up to be a turning point in the world of luxury fashion, particularly where sustainability is concerned.

Hermès is making Birkin bags out of mushroom leather. Cartier unveiled their first solar-powered watch, with a strap made from apple scraps. High-end carmakers like Audi, Lotus and Bentley have committed to electric-only futures.

Longchamp, however, is going another route. A rather swashbuckling one, by all accounts.

The French leather goods maker, best known for their famous Le Pliage handbag, has announced plans to ship 50% of its America-bound cargo using sailboats.

Longchamp has partnered with a French start-up named Neoline, which is building a modern roll-on/roll-off cargo ship that’s entirely wind-powered. The Neoliner, which has yet to enter production, will be 136m long with an estimated cargo capacity of 5000 tonnes and a commercial speed of 11 knots – all with wind power.

Neoline has already attracted some serious backers, such as Renault, Clarins, Hennessy, and yacht builder Beneteau. Longchamp’s endorsement of the project lends it even more credibility.

A Longchamp men’s briefcase. Image: Longchamp

“Using the line’s planned Montoir de Bretagne to Baltimore service, Longchamp plans to transport half its annual volume of containers on the Transatlantic route by sail power, beginning with the service’s initial launch in 2024. When a second vessel comes into service and Neoline can offer bimonthly sailings, Longchamp will examine the possibility of expanding its commitment,” The Maritime Executive reports.

“The company says that it expects to emit 90% less carbon per voyage than a comparably-sized conventional merchant ship.”

It sounds a bit old-school, but it’s a brilliant idea. Wind power is the ultimate renewable energy source; endless and pollution-free. It’s one thing driving an electric car, but what we really need is for commercial transport to transition to renewables. A wind-powered cargo ship is an absolute masterstroke and far from a gimmick – it could be the future.

America is easily one of Longchamp’s biggest markets, too, so this isn’t just a token gesture. Time will tell if Longchamp and Neoline will be able to expand services to other parts of the world – China, perhaps? Maybe not Somalia, though, or else they might encounter some real pirates…

Longchamp, like other high-end leather goods manufacturers, also place a great emphasis on the care and repair of their goods – another important facet of sustainability. Watch below how one of their skilled French artisans repair one of their popular Le Pliage bags.

A look inside Longchamp’s ‘Art of Repairing’

It’s good to see Longchamp and other high-end brands taking sustainability more seriously and thinking outside of the box when it comes to tackling this challenge. Fingers crossed customers are willing to wait a little longer for their handbags if they know they’re coming sans carbon.

Not all sustainable fashion initiatives are made equal, however. Read our report on how Adidas and Allbird’s eco-friendly sneaker collaboration might not make it past the starting line.

Flight Attendant Reveals Secret To Getting Special Treatment As A Passenger
Flight Attendant Reveals Secret To Getting Special Treatment As A Passenger

It’s always nice to be treated nice. But with many airlines (especially US domestic ones) fighting a penny-pinching race to the bottom even before the pandemic hit, many customers are now likely to continue to be shocked by the scoldings they receive and terse exchanges they are going to continue to have with underpaid and underappreciated flight attendants as monetary issues persist into 2021 and beyond. There is, however, a way to ensure you get special treatment from these angels of the sky. And it starts with not thinking of them as angels of the sky (see: ‘No Coddle Zone’:  Flight Attendant Rant Every Man Needs To Hear). Beyond that, there is another genius tactic that flight attendant Kat Kamalani recently shared on TikTok, which she claims will get you special treatment from the whole crew.“If you do this one simple thing on an aircraft, I promise you [that] you will get royal treatment from the flight attendants,” Kamalani says. [Watch below]

“Being a flight attendant is exhausting. You’re always in different time zones, waking up crazy hours, dealing with angry customers, so I promise you next time you fly [if] you want special treatment from the flight attendants this is all you have to do…”“$5 Starbucks gift cards. It means the world to us when a customer gives us this and if you don’t have gift cards you can just pick up some candy bars, lip balm, anything and give them to your flight attendants.”

“We will know where you’re sitting, we’ll know what you look like and the whole crew will make sure you are taken care of.”

This tip sparked quite a debate among Kamalani’s followers. Some thought it was genius, writing comments like, “I always give them donuts!!! They treat me so nice lol” and “I’ve gotten free drinks for being polite… it’s so rare these days that they appreciate it. Has happened to me on Delta and Jet Blue.”Many others, however, took issue with it, writing comments like the following:

“Bribe the attendants if you want to be treated like a human.”“I said that to my roommate upon boarding and the flight attendant was SO RUDE. She’s like we don’t want candy and gifts.”“But they’re supposed to take care of EVERYONE equally. That’s their job.”

“Just do your job seriously,” wrote another.Further users got into a discussion that sounds remarkably similar to the one we’ve heard a million times about the tipping system (in restaurants) in the United States.“Too bad it’s not included in the price of the already expensive ticket.”

“So America.”

Finally, another contingent of the audience asked why, exactly, people want special treatment from flight attendants.“What is it that you need so much during a flight that you need to go out of your way to bring gifts?” one wrote. “All I do is read a book, drink water and sleep.”One user reposted to this, writing: “more refills, free food, /alcohol check on me more often.”Our response to this is that you should be able to expect a decent baseline of treatment from flight attendants – that goes without saying – but Kamalani’s tip is for if you want to be lavished with that little bit extra attention – refills and so forth.Kamalani has also, on previous occasions, shared how not to annoy flight attendants, explaining that hitting the call button during takeoff and landing is infuriating (unless it’s an emergency) and will have you marked out as a pain in the behind ASAP.To learn more about flight etiquette and the latest industry news, check out our Travel vertical.

Billy Murray Exposes The Duality Of Man With Offbeat Double-Wristed Watch Flex
Billy Murray Exposes The Duality Of Man With Offbeat Double-Wristed Watch Flex

Bill Murray is one of those men who just ages like a fine wine. The now 70-year-old actor, comedian and writer has always had an offbeat and deadpan sense of humour, and he’s really leaned into that in recent years with his wardrobe choices. From wearing deliberately kitschy character outfits to golf tournaments to making tweed look cool in Ghostbusters, the man has a sense of sartorial flair that’s just as unique and subversive as his humour. At the 74th Annual Cannes Film Festival for the inaugural screening of Wes Anderson’s The French Dispatch (the director’s tenth feature film and the ninth in which Murray has appeared), Murray rocked up to a photocall wearing an effervescent Hawaiian shirt, summery fedora, baby blue shorts and On Running sneakers, giving off immense and no doubt intentional ‘dorky dad’ or ‘clueless American tourist’ vibes. Those dorky dad vibes were amplified by his choice to double-wrist – that is, wear a watch on both hands. What was even more eclectic is how different the two watches were: a cheap Timex Easy Reader on his right hand, and a well-worn Cartier Tank Solo on his left.Ah, the duality of man… That’s what Wes Anderson would say, probably.

Images: Getty / Amazon / Cartier
Superficially, both watches look somewhat similar: they both have white dials, leather straps and unfussy designs. One’s rectangular, one’s circular. But where you can pick up a Timex Easy Reader for $60 or less on Amazon, a Cartier Tank Solo is worth several thousand dollars – especially a vintage, presumably mechanical example like Murray’s. Maybe he wears the Timex because it’s easier to read than the Cartier? Or maybe he’s just in character.RELATED: This 1940s Cartier ‘Watch’ Might Be The Most Unique Timepiece You Ever SeeThe French Dispatch, in typical Wes Anderson fashion, is a comedy/drama following the French foreign bureau of a fictional Kansas newspaper. It features a star-studded cast, with Murray performing alongside many Anderson regulars: Adrien Brody, Tilda Swinton, Owen Wilson, Léa Seydoux, Willem Dafoe… The list goes on.The French Dispatch will hit Australian theatres on the 21st of October, and American theatres the following day.

India Rolling Out Luxury Cars Faster Than Vaccines, Data Suggests
India Rolling Out Luxury Cars Faster Than Vaccines, Data Suggests

It’s been over a year since the COVID-19 pandemic began. While it’s truly remarkable how quickly different countries were able to come up with vaccine candidates, the reality remains that some countries are bouncing back quicker than others.India in particular is really suffering. There are currently almost 31 million active COVID cases in the country, making India the second-worst affected country in the world behind the United States’ almost 34 million active cases (that said, India has over four times the US’ population, which really puts into perspective how bad things really are in the US).With numbers like that, you’d think that India would be doing everything it could to try and get its people vaccinated – but some surprising data coming out of one of the country’s biggest airports suggests that at least some Indians have their priorities seriously skewed.Between April 2020 and May 2021, Mumbai’s Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport (CSMIA) actually saw automotive shipments eclipse pharmaceutical shipments, at a time when the country has been desperate for vaccines and medical equipment, Moneycontrol reports.According to the report, cars accounted for the number one source of movement at the airport at around 31% of total volume, followed by pharmaceutical goods at 29%, where prior to the pandemic, pharmaceutical goods had the largest share of airport shipments at 26% while cars accounted for 23%.CSMIA facilitated the movement of approximately 360 tonnes of automobiles, handling over 180 cars in the thirteen-month period.

Mumbai’s Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport (formerly known as Sahar International Airport). Image: Skytrax
Seeing as India has a thriving domestic auto industry – with even luxury marques such as Audi, Land Rover and Mercedes-Benz producing vehicles in the country for both domestic and international markets – it follows that a majority of those 180 cars must be supercars or other super high-end automobiles. Flying in cars is an expensive endeavour, which you could only justify for truly special cars. It’s demonstrative of India’s growing appetite for luxury cars as well as the extreme wealth disparity that characterises the nation. India is home to 140 billionaires and over 412,000 millionaires, despite most Indians making on average around US$2.80 a day. There’s an argument to be made that India’s wealthy should be helping their country by importing vaccines instead of V10s… But these cargo statistics don’t tell the full story when it comes to India’s vaccination rollout.RELATED: ‘Lamborghini’s Huracán Evo Is The Most Impressive Car I’ve Driven In A Long Time’
A Lamborghini Huracán in Ludhiana, northern India. Image: SBS
Unlike many countries, India has the capacity to manufacture its own vaccines – indeed, India is the world’s biggest vaccine producer, the country churning out millions of doses of AstraZeneca. So there’s an argument to be made that India doesn’t need to import vaccines when it’s capable of producing its own supply.Despite this, just 4% of the population are fully vaccinated, in part thanks to the government’s failure to order enough doses, according to NPR (where have we heard that story before…)RELATED: Grim Statistic Reveals Just How Slowly Australia’s Vaccine Rollout Is GoingThat said, it’s worth having a bit of perspective here. India is a developing country; the second-most populous in the world and perhaps the world’s most ethnically and linguistically diverse. It’s unfair to compare India to wealthy, more developed countries like Iceland or Israel.Let’s just hope that India’s vaccine rollout picks up more speed than a Porsche Taycan Turbo.

Bondi Beach Photo From 1900 Proves Why We Shouldn’t Romanticise The Past
Bondi Beach Photo From 1900 Proves Why We Shouldn’t Romanticise The Past

From surfers dancing on double glazed longboards to TikTok stars lip-syncing Nirvana, many can be accused in our society of loving an era they were never part of.In most cases, there’s nothing wrong with that, other than it sometimes being ~cringe~.However, as a photo shared on Instagram five days ago by the North Bondi RSL club recently – in our view – showed, romanticising the past can be a flawed pursuit. The restaurant shared the following image with its 1,802 followers, with the following caption: “Bondi Beach, around 1900.”

The original source of the image is the Powerhouse Museum. The 1900s in Bondi was an interesting time. According to myplace.edu.au, it wasn’t until February 1907 that a group of surfers formed the Bondi Surf Bathers’ Lifesaving Club – the first lifesaving club in the world.“Soon after the lifesavers’ club was founded, the law was changed so surf bathing in the daytime was allowed in Sydney. Until this time it was illegal to surf between 6 am and 8 pm.”Jumping on back to the North Bondi RSL club photo from 1900, this makes some of the comments rolling in look, in our view, a little silly. The comments ranged from complimentary (“incredible shot”) to witty (“Nothing has changed….no social distancing”).Another nostalgic soul wrote: “Much better than it is now.” Something very difficult to agree with unless you hate swimming. Also: many of the things that make Bondi ~Bondi~ are nowhere to be seen in the picture.

No Mexican restaurants, no post-surf Woolies, no activewear. No $20 million apartments.Worse: no outdoor exercise area.RELATED: ‘Most Bondi Photo Ever’ Sums Up Australian Cafe Culture In 2021Just a surreal natural backdrop. So much for Scum Valley.

As photographer Amaury Tréguer once wrote: “I love Bondi for a lot of things including all the randomness that you can witness.”

“This morning started with what I thought initially a photo shoot, but it actually wasn’t, it was the filming of a beautiful rap music video with the lady singing along the music pumping from the speakers. The rest was pretty usual and the surf pumping.”

Amaury isn’t the only photographer to cotton onto Bondi’s unique lifestyle. The Instagram account Only In Bondi has posted some classics too.

The Best Places To Buy Bedding, Sheets & Linen Online
The Best Places To Buy Bedding, Sheets & Linen Online

Your bedroom is your sacred retreat, a space designed purely for you. It’s the haven where you unwind every evening and reset for every morning. A man’s bedroom is his personal oasis, his starting block for each new day, and the perfect bed linen is paramount when ensuring that you’re fully invigorated and refreshed.

Some prefer crisp hotel-style silk, whereas others are after a back-to-nature sustainable cotton creation. Some love a bold geometric print and dramatic velvet comforter, others lust after minimalist designs and clean lines. But all busy men need bedding that is comforting, lavish and strong enough to withstand all bedroom activities, so we have put together a list of the very best online bed linen retailers.

Some Bed Sheet Tips To Get You Started

If you’ve ever experienced ‘sheet shame’, D’Marge is here to help. We’ve rounded up some tips and tactics to overhaul your bedroom feng shui and avoid the dreaded last-minute bedroom retreat.

Start Fresh

Ditch the daggy doona and floral fitted sheets your mum gave you when you first moved out of home – it reeks of immaturity. We suggest you bin them all immediately and start with a clean slate. That way there’s no chance of being caught out during a slow washing month.

At first glance, bed linen can seem outrageously expensive, and for that reason cheaper, low-quality alternatives are tempting. Resist the urge not to splurge; just because you can’t feel the difference between a lousy blend and high thread count, she definitely will. Also, sheets aren’t a household item you need to buy regularly – every few years is about right – so your monetary outlay is quantitatively affordable.

Matchy-Matchy

Simplify the whole bedding debacle and buy a sheet set that includes a fitted (and top) sheet, a doona cover and a pair of pillowcases. This course of action ensures you’ll have a matching, well-put together bed that appears neat and, most importantly, clean!

A good rule of thumb is to have three or four of bedding sets so you can rotate them as necessary and always have a backup set or two at hand. This also adds to the longevity of your sheets, as they’ll be out of action and resting their delicate threads as often as they hold your weight.

Heading out for a big night? Try to avoid mixing elements from different bedding sets; she’ll notice and judge accordingly.

Mother Knows Best

We don’t mean to sound like your mum, but, make your bed! If you should find a lady in your abode at the end of the night, it will add to your appeal as a well put-together gentleman.

When To Buy New Sheets

Not sure when to get a new set of sheets? Err on the side of caution and invest in some new threads if:

  • You can’t remember the last time you bought bed linen
  • Your sheets are grey, but were white when you first purchased them
  • The edges are so ratty it makes your dog’s bed look luxurious
  • Your mum asks if you need any extra summer/winter sheets
  • Stains are noticeable

Say No To Silk And Satin

No matter how sexy you think it’ll be, silk and satin should never cover your bed. They’re tacky, clingy and will make your bedroom look like a dodgy porn set.

Sleep Like An Egyptian

High thread count Egyptian cotton sheets are more expensive than cheaper options because they retain colour and texture far longer, and they actually get better with age. Once you go Egyptian, you never go back!

Additionally, high thread-count linen can last a lifetime when treated well and cleaned regularly. Some unscrupulous manufacturers are known to rig their thread count, making it necessary to do some homework before handing over any cash.

Colour

Classic shades like white, khaki and grey are always stylish. Stay away from busy, gaudy prints as these won’t be versatile if you decide to redecorate.

Wash Frequently

You’d never wear the same shirt for three months, so why do we think it’s okay to sleep on the same sheets for an indefinite length of time? Night sweats and other fluids accumulate quickly, so throw your sheets in the washing machine every other week, and the doona at least once a month. There’s nothing better than the feeling – and smell – of fresh sheets, and the only thing stopping you from enjoying it is your laundry laziness.

Seasonal Dressing

Captain Obvious suggests you canoodle under flannel sheets in cooler months and make love under lightweight sheets the rest of the year. Whatever the season, buy 100 per cent cotton sheets (with a long weave) and add a blanket or throw to the end of the bed for added warmth and sophistication.

Poly blends might be cheaper, but they also increase your tendency to sweat during the night, which isn’t the biggest turn on. Sleep and play under breathable cotton sheets instead.

Don’t Forget The Pillows

Nothing undermines thoughtful bedding efforts like old, sweat-stained pillows. Wash pillows every month and buy new ones once a year.

Bedsheets FAQ

United Airlines Casually Unveils The Future Of Domestic Air Travel
United Airlines Casually Unveils The Future Of Domestic Air Travel

It’s been a tricky time to look to the future. With a pandemic pounding the world many have started looking inward. Travel plans have been put on hold, travel companies have lost more money than a compulsive gambler at a casino and travellers – especially those of us in Australia – have had our boots strapped to the floor. But elsewhere in the world, nations are now seeing the light at the end of the tunnel. Vaccinated US citizens have had quite the pick of the oyster (if the world were an oyster) for some time now, with more and more destinations opening up. And airlines like United Airlines are making grand plans for the future. On that note, United Airlines early on Wednesday morning (AEST) took to Instagram to casually announce the (potential) future of domestic air travel.“We signed an agreement with @heartaerospace to acquire the ES-19 aircraft, a 19-seat electric airliner that has the potential to decarbonize regional air travel,” United Airlines wrote. [Watch below]

“United Express regional partner @mesa_airlines has also agreed to purchase and operate the ES-19.”“The ES-19 can fly up to 250 miles with minimum noise and zero operational emissions and are set to take flight in 2026,” the carrier added.

“Examples of potential routes include Chicago O’Hare (ORD) to Purdue University Airport (LAF) and San Francisco (SFO) to Modesto City-County Airport (MOD).”

For context, New York to London is 3,459 miles. So there is a long way to go before sustainable international travel is on the cards (given the range of these electric aircraft is 250 miles). But still: at a domestic level, it’s an interesting development.“United Airlines Ventures and Breakthrough Energy Ventures are both identifying and building companies that can help the planet reach net-zero greenhouse gas emissions which will help us build a carbon-neutral airline and reach our net-zero greenhouse gas emissions goal,” United Airlines added. This was Mozart to the ears of sustainable travel lovers. Blogger Trusted Travel Girl wrote in the comments: “So exciting!!!! This is def the future.”Even Instagram account @passengershaming was impressed, writing, “UA is killing it at the A/C game!”“Woohoo United! Way to lead the way,” wrote another United Airlines Instagram follower.“It’s electrifying,” wrote another.

“United is really readying itself for the future of every aspect of flying.”

Not everyone was convinced. One Instagram user wrote: “Another PR joke? Hahah.”This isn’t the only splash United Airlines have made in recent months. News broke in June they are also working on making the unthinkable thinkable with supersonic flight, hoping to enable passengers to fly from New York to London in 3.5 hours.

View this post on Instagram

A post shared by United Airlines (@united)

As DMARGE reported at the time, United Airlines has struck a deal with Boom Supersonic to make this happen, with the plan being to add 15 (with an option for 35 more) supersonic ‘Overture’ aircraft to its fleet, once ‘Overture’ meets United’s demanding safety, operating and sustainability requirements. Our only question is when will we be able to fly from Sydney to London in 10 hours? Qantas, Etihad, Emirates, Singapore Airlines, Qatar Airways… we’re looking at you.In the meantime, watch this Concorde take off and reach supersonic speed…
