If you’re a runner, there can often be no better feeling than lacing up your shoes and heading out into the great outdoors. Finding new routes, beating personal best times on old ones and feeling the wind through your hair can all attribute to the “runner’s high”.
Running in Australia, for example, has seen a huge rise in popularity; the number of people who actively partake has doubled since 2005, and more than 80,000 people crossed the line of the most recent City 2 Surf fun run. (Which we had new Pegasus Nike runners to compete with.)

But with running comes injuries, and a new study has found those who put running above all else, are more likely to find themselves taking time out due to a sustained injury. The study, conducted by Professor Jan de Jonge – who has taught at the University of South Australia – took a participant group of 246 runners, from ages 19 to 77 and both males and females, to find out how their attitude towards running affected their risk of running-related injuries.
Professor de Jonge found that those who saw running as the most important thing in their life, even above relationships with friends, family, and lovers, were most at risk of sustaining an injury. The reason? Taking an “I just knocked 43 seconds off my 10km PB bro and I’m going to smash it again tomorrow” approach to running, means rest and recovery time takes a back seat.
51.2 percent of the study group reported running-related injuries in the previous 12 months, such as knee, Achilles tendon, and foot injuries.
Perhaps unsurprisingly, de Jonge found that the runners who were happiest when clad in lycra and shaving seconds off their times, day in and day out, and who didn’t feel the need to undergo proper recovery, fell into the younger, 20-34 age group.
Conversely, the older generation of runners, read: more experienced, did put an emphasis on letting their bodies rest after a sweet 5 or 10km run, recorded quicker mental recovery and were less likely to suffer from injuries.
Speaking of the findings, de Jonge said, “Most running-related injuries are sustained as a result of overtraining and overuse or failing to adequately recover, merely due to an obsessive passion for running.”
“When running becomes obsessive, it leads to problems. It controls the person’s life at the expense of other people and activities and leads to more running-related injuries.”
Stats show this issue to be widespread, with a study by Medibank Private listing running as the 4th most injury-prone sport in Australia after Aussie Rules, basketball and netball, with sporting injuries overall costing the economy more than $2 billion a year.
It’s a tough topic to navigate, however, with the Spartan mentality of “just push through the pain” being both physically damaging and mentally rewarding.
In this world of Netflix and UberEats, pain endurance is a lost skill. But learning it comes at a cost.

You wouldn’t necessarily associate comedians with style. They’re usually a cynical bunch who observe the world around them to get their laughs and don’t tend to care about their appearance – at least, that’s the opinion of this British writer who regularly watches clips of up and coming talent.
But when you’re a world-famous comedian and judge on one of the biggest shows in America, you need to bring your A-game on every occasion. And that’s exactly what Canadian comedian and judge on America’s Got Talent Howie Mandel has done. Turning up for the start of the 15th season of the talent show in Pasadena, California on March the 4th 2020, Mandel showed us all how to rock smart-casual style.
He opted for the ultimate in casual dress, pairing a crisp white t-shirt, with navy jeans and the cleanest of clean white Paul Smith sneakers – similar to this pair from Mr. Porter – but added an extra layer of formality by throwing a navy unstructured blazer over the top. We haven’t been able to track down the exact one Howie’s wearing, but this 100 percent wool blazer is a fine substitute.
We think it’s a great look, with small details such as his jeans finishing on his ankle without having to be rolled up being a fine example of masterclass style.
Everything is cut perfectly for his body shape too, with a slim fit proving there’s no need for skinny jeans anymore, and that maybe menswear isn’t quite ready to take the full leap into oversized suiting – the likes of which has been championed by David Beckham and Jude Law.
The judge’s scores are in, and it’s a perfect 10 from us.

Casual shirts – Not only can you have season-specific casual shirts, such as something short-sleeved and linen for spring and summer, or a long-sleeved button down shirt that’s more heavily weighted for autumn and winter, but you also need to consider the dress code of where you wear your shirts: business shirts, tuxedos, and, of course, casual. There’s always a need for good quality casual shirts.
Every clothing retailer worth their salt will have an extensive casual shirt collection, make no bones about it, but that also means the level of quality will waiver drastically (and usually be reflective of the money you spend). It probably goes without saying, but the more you invest in quality, the happier you’ll be long term. Just be sure to read the washing instructions!
We’ve selected some of our absolute best casual shirts for men and the brands that make them, that will keep you looking stylish at every casual and smart-casual affair.

Forget Zola, Hugo and Proust: Kanye West just stepped out in Paris wearing a suede jacket that says more than the entire French literary cannon.
An exaggeration? Perhaps. But as anyone who appreciates style will attest, Kanye’s latest winter flex is the sartorial equivalent of Nietzsche’s, “It is my ambition to say in ten sentences what others say in a whole book.”
Big Sleeve Energy.
Like the renowned nihilist, Kanye too has an ego that surpasses his talent. This is sometimes reflected in his clothing, with his Luxury Crocs, Fisherman’s Flex and Zero F*cks Style recently making headlines.
This week though he has come through with the goods, spotted stepping out of a Paris restaurant after his Paris Fashion Week show on March the 2nd 2020, wearing a suede jacket, light khaki jeans, grey boots (all appear to be part of Yeezy Season 8) a white tee shirt and his signature bling.
During the show, Kanye brought Yeezy back to the runway (after a hiatus since his last show in 2017) and also brought along his daughter North to steal the scene with some rap of her own.
The show took place in Espace Niemeyer, the headquarters of the French Communist Party famous for its alien landing-looking dome, underground council room and Brutalist design.
A marked change since, as The New York Times puts it, “he first tried to conquer the industry [eight years and one brand ago] with skintight leather, bugle beads, broadtail and go-karts, only to retreat after two seasons.”
“Thus did Mr. West return to Paris Fashion Week: with family in tow, outreach on the mind, a dose of bombast, a dollop of absurdity and a piece of home.”
The Stronger rapper is now, according to The New York Times’ fashion review, some sort of “Delphic oracle/court jester/cultural harbinger/sneaker supremo.”
In other words, Kanye is not just a preacher of ear candy and divinity, but of style too. Mimick it at your own risk…
