Australias First Luxury Watch Service Launches For The Horologically Handicapped

Are you, or do you aspire to be, an avid watch collector? Do you have $100,000 sitting in your bank account, begging to be spent on something impulsive? Kennedy’s slightly confusing new “subscription” service could be just the thing you’re looking for.The high-end luxury watch and jewellery retailer is on the hunt for 12 wealthy lucky customers who are willing to part with $100k in return for 12 watches. Customers will be sent a new watch every month, with each one being personally selected by none other than Mr James Kennedy himself. The retailer implies customers won’t all receive the same watch, as they’ll be curated to their “particular interests, lifestyle, and personality.”For your $100,000 you’d expect each watch to be worth around $8,500. And they might, we just don’t know because the press release that landed in our inbox is a little vague. Will you get a $10,000 Cartier dress watch one month and a $7,000 IWC Pilot the next? Quite possibly. We can be confident you’re not going to get the latest Rolex GMT-Master II or Daytona (with a 3-year waiting list) but we could be very wrong here. Regardless, with customers spending $100,000 upfront we expect some big savings on the overall collection.

It’s the first time such a service has been launched in Australia and comes just after Kennedy’s multi-million dollar sponsorship of the Melbourne Cup. If all 12 subscription spots are filled it’s an easy way to recoup $1,200,000 and move some serious stock. However, we wouldn’t personally call it a subscription service though, as you have to part with the full wedge of cash before you get anything in return. What we do like about it is that you get to keep all 12 timepieces at the end of the year, so you will end up with some sort of collection. Compare this to similar services such as Acquired Time, which charge you a monthly fee, but you only get to flaunt your new wristwear for 30 days before having to return it.The issue we do have, not just with this particular service but watch subscriptions in general, is that they take away the emotional aspect of buying a luxury timepiece. Spending several thousand dollars on a watch is an investment and a carefully thought-out process – unless you’re Floyd Mayweather, of course. They’re bought to signify special occasions, or given to loved ones as gifts.

Different customers have different requirements when buying a luxury timepiece. Size, movement type, strap material are just some of the many aspects that need to be taken into consideration before parting with a significant amount of money. It will be interesting how Kennedy’s service will address the actual process of seeing and holding various watches instore. How will the customer form that all-important attachment to their potential purchase? As Watches of Switzerland points out:

“A watch is with you (or close by) all of the time; more so than even your phone. It’s something you will likely wear and look at every day. Choosing a timepiece of quality conveys a sense of self-respect. That message often carries forward into how others perceive you. The watch one wears can tell a lot about a person. A luxury watch can communicate individual taste, aesthetic appeal, a subtle display of wealth, and dress etiquette.”

Confident as we are in Kennedy’s ability to choose the right watch for each customer, you’ll have to hope you’re happy with whatever lands on your doorstep each month. If the ambiguous nature of the new service isn’t already enough to tempt you, then we should let you know that all 12 customers will receive a personal welcome letter from the James Kennedy as a part of the subscription.

Tracksuits have a special place in our hearts and for one specific reason – they’re simply the comfiest item of clothing around. Traditionally considered a ‘sloppy’, unflattering item of clothing, in recent times designers have been pushing to make tracksuits more and more acceptable with interesting designs, materials and cuts.

Enter the Flint and Tinder Camo Tracksuit. Made from midweight french terry with a subtle dark green and brown camo pattern, it is the perfect middle ground between warmth and usability keeping the wearer warm enough in winter with the ability to be worn in the transitional seasons.

As a full set, the tracksuit is close to the ultimate long-haul flight fit and will also work well at the gym (channelling your inner Rocky) or lounging around the house. Separate the pants and the hoodie and you can easily pair them with other items from your wardrobe like simple white t-shirts and sneakers or jeans.

The pants are priced at $88 and the hoodie at $98 which is rather reasonable for such a high-quality tracksuit set, especially when you consider the near-boundless opportunities you’ll have to wear it and the supreme comfort it will bring to your life.

Why Men Who Drive Convertibles Will Never Be Taken Seriously
Why Men Who Drive Convertibles Will Never Be Taken Seriously

“Tosser”, you’ll say as some tanned guy with stress-free skin bombs it past you on the M1, hair ruffling in the breeze. “That’s a hairdresser’s car,” you’ll tell your friend when he shows up at the pub with his new drop-top, looking all smug. There’s something about a man driving a car without a roof that has never fully sat well with society.

The most common affiliation with men and convertibles is the idea they are going through a midlife crisis. And if the lust of a younger woman isn’t feasible, a new car is next on the list. Being middle-aged (which is officially between 45 and 64 years old), the man will likely be financially well-off in order to facilitate a car purchase. The result is either something brand new from Germany, or something vintage that can only be taken out on Sundays, and even then, only if conditions are just right.

Of course, the other common connection between a man and a swanky soft-top is that he’s overcompensating. While he may think his car will attract the attention of ladies, due to its looks and large engine, the ladies will often assume the man is anything but big.

For this reason, it takes a real gentleman (or a complete madman) to pull off the convertible. The problem is, beyond fictional characters like James Bond (who is set to move to an electric car anyway in the upcoming No Time To Die) and Don Draper, few men fall into this category, let alone the ones that have worked themselves to the bone to buy a car they can’t really afford.

You’re neither of these men and you’re certainly not David Gandy, so sticking to a car with an actual roof is the best option to avoid getting judgemental looks at the traffic lights. Don’t believe us? When it comes down to whether a sports car will make a man more or less attractive, one female user on Reddit says: “Honestly, I find sports cars kinda douchey and unattractive.”

“Of the two, definitely a car with a roof – convertibles are very impractical in my climate and scream “mid-life crisis” – but to the extent that I’d care about any car, which is minimal, I’d be more impressed by a guy that drove a sensible and economical vehicle.”

Another user on Lipstick Alley adds: “I’m a car girl, and dudes in convertibles [sic] is, IN MY OPINION, lame. They just don’t handle as well as hardtop and of course if you get into an accident, ya head gon be gone.” We don’t know about you, but we like our head.

Oh and it’s not just internet commenters that share this opinion: industry professionals agree that guys should steer clear of the convertible if they want to be taken seriously.

WhichCar? Content Director Glenn Butler says: “As for convertibles… The car industry actually agrees with us – no one, let alone men, should drive a convertible. No one even buys the Ford Mustang droptop, which is arguably the best looking of the lot.”

That said, according to Glenn, with the right car, you can at least improve your chances: “There are still a few roadsters worthy of respect. Mercedes-AMG GT Roadster… that is 430kW of twin-turbo V8 hard-ass right there. And If you’ve ever driven an early ’00s BMW Z3 M Roadster, you simply don’t care what people think of you, because they won’t see which way you went.”

Motoring journalist Stephen Corby, who has written for a multitude of automotive titles, also weighed in, telling D’Marge to purchase with caution…

“A person who buys a convertible thus should never be taken seriously. If you have any doubts, just go and count how many convertibles there are running around at your nearest track day. They’re about as common at race circuits as giraffes at the ballet.”

While there will always be cases for and against men and convertibles, we’re sorry to say that even though they’re undeniably cool, we just wouldn’t find ourselves sitting behind the wheel of a drop-top. We suggest you don’t either.

Get Insane Muscle Definition With UFC Champ Jorge Masvidal’s Latest Workout

Our, and to a further extent your, idea of a heavy workout session will likely involve chest presses, squats and maybe a bit of cardio if there’s time. Front-loaded squats, kettlebell swings, medicine ball throws and resistance band training all feature in Masvidal’s latest routine. Just one watch of the video has left us sweating, so we’re not entirely sure we’d fancy our chances at giving the full thing a go next time we’re in the gym.If you fancy yourself as a bit of a gym junkie though, we’re sure replicating Jorge’s workout will have you reaping a whole host of fitness benefits. Just don’t expect a similar physique overnight, though.

We always recommend warming up before attempting any workout. A quick 5-minute warm-up can make the difference between leaving the gym in your car, or leaving in an ambulance. Fitness First trainer Mark Glanville says a good warm-up routine should consist of the following:

  • Foam Rolling: Using a foam roller improves your thoracic mobility, i.e. your spinal rotation. Lie on the floor with your knees bent and feet flat.  Position the foam roller under your body around the mid-back area. With your fingers touching your temples and elbows forward, raise your hips and begin to roll from mid-back to the neck and down again. Repeat for 30 seconds.
  • Dislocates: Hold a dowel rod or a light resistance band with a wide grip in front of your hips, standing with your knees slightly flexed, chest up and shoulder blades retracted. Bring the stick or band over the head, keeping your elbows locked and the spine neutral. Make contact with the lower back or glutes, and bring it back to the start position. Complete 10-15 repetitions.
  • Inch-worm into scapula push-up/rotating plank:
    • Inch Worm
    • Starting in a standing position touch your toes, bending the knees slightly if needed. Start walking your hands forward until you reach a straight-arm plank position.  Maintaining a neutral spine begin to protract (separate) your shoulder blades by arching through the upper back and then retract them by squeezing the shoulder blades together and keeping your elbows straight.  If necessary, drop to your knees in order to keep a neutral spine. Complete 10-15 repetitions.
    • Rotating PlankFrom the inch worm, drop to your elbows into a plank position.  Rotate to one side and bring one elbow towards the ceiling, keeping the elbow bent.  Look forward and engage the shoulder blade at the top of the movement.  Repeat on the opposite side.  Complete 6-10 repetitions on each side.

Once you’ve warmed up, it’s time to tackle Jorge’s workout.

  • Resistance Band Training – This exercise requires a partner, or alternatively you can tie a resistance band around a squat rack. With a band around your waist and a tight band around your thighs, pull against the band around your waist whilst moving around and punching the air in front of you.
  • Front Squats – With a barbell across the front of your shoulders, cross your arms and bring your elbows up to be parallel with the ground. Keep your core tight, bend your knees until hips and knees are parallel with the ground. Push upwards, keeping your feet flat on the ground. (Front squats are harder than back squats, so go easy on the weight until you perfect the technique).
  • Medicine Ball Throw Downs – Grab a medicine ball and throw it at the ground. Twist your body with each throw and kick your leg out to pile extra effort on your core.
  • Hex Bar Deadlifts – Line your shins up with the weights, grab the handles, tighten your core and bend your legs to engage your hamstrings. Lift up, pushing from your legs, squeezing your glutes when you’re standing straight. Make sure to not overarch your back.
  • Kettlebell One-Arm Swings – Another leg-dominant exercise. Lightly grip a kettlebell (choose whichever weight feels right), use your hips as a hinge to swing the kettlebell from in between your legs and up to just before eye-level. Repeat for both arms.
  • Kneeling Landmine Chest Press – Kneel in front of the bar and use a neutral grip with both hands on the end of the bar and push upwards.
  • Barbell Ab Rollout – Kneeling on the ground, grab a barbell and slowly roll it until you’re parallel with the ground. Use your core to roll the barbell back until you’re back to a kneeling position.
  • Hyperextension With Resistance Bands – Ensure your waist is in line with the top of the pad of the hyperextension bench and your feet are firmly on the footplates. Starting with your upper body parallel to the floor, lift it up until your body is straight. Add resistance bands into this movement to pile on extra effort.
  • Ab Crunches – A staple of many gym routines. Lock your feet into something solid and lift your torso up off the ground.
  • Hanging Leg Lift With Medicine Ball – Holding onto a high bar, clutch a medicine ball between your knees and lift up until your knees are at 90-degrees to your body.

We’re worn out just reading that workout. We challenge you to add it into your next visit.

Jeff Goldblum’s Leather Biker Jacket Deserves Its Own Movie
Jeff Goldblum’s Leather Biker Jacket Deserves Its Own Movie

Jeff Goldblum is no stranger to our style pages and it’s clear to see why. The 67-year-old proves time and time again that older gentlemen have just as much clout in the fashion game as their younger counterparts.

Spotted in New York City for an appearance on Good Morning America to talk about his new show on the recently launched Disney+ streaming service, the stylish savant demonstrates how to effectively wear a black leather biker jacket.

A menswear essential if ever there was one, Jeff teams his Saint Laurent leather biker, complete with wide lapel and multitude of zips, with an all-black ensemble comprising skinny black jeans, black shirt and tie, and black leather Chelsea boots. He tops it off with a black fedora and his Tank de Cartier watch that he’s been seen wearing on several previous occasions.

It’s no surprise Jeff’s opted for the square-faced timepiece once again, as its black leather strap and gold face is the perfect cherry for atop this stylish cake. You can snap one up yourself for anywhere between AU$3,750 – AU$12,200.

Not content with just releasing a new show, ‘The World According To Jeff Goldblum’, the king of cool also appeared on the American breakfast show to talk about his recently released jazz album.

Luxury German Carmaker Steals Australia’s Best Car Of 2019 Award

Ach Ja!, Wunderbar und groß. Just a few of the phrases we bet this year’s Carsales Car of the Year winner will be shouting from the steep rooftops in Munich. That’s right, this year’s winner of the coveted motoring prize isn’t Toyota, Hyundai or anything else from Japan. Instead, it’s the very popular, very German, BMW 3 Series. The luxury sports sedan has never won the award before – now in its fifth year – but the 12 expert judges unanimously decided that this year was a return to form for Munich-based manufacturer.Deciding the best car in Australia each year is no easy task for the guys over at Carsales, with new models released every year, the entries have to outmuscle the competition to take home the country’s top motoring prize. Each year Carsales chooses 28 finalists from every new car released in Australia throughout the year, before selecting 10 shortlist finalists. It’s from this list that the overall winner is decided. No easy feat for any new car, but especially one that’s so often been overlooked.Marton Pettendy, Managing Editor of Carsales said: “The BMW 3 Series is not only the finest premium sports sedan in a decade, but it is also the most compelling new model released in Australia this year.”

“The 3 Series is very refined, comfortable, dynamically superior and above all, rewarding to drive. It is also safe, solid, well priced and generouslly equipped.”

The German carmaker will be particularly glücklich as 2019 proved to be a rewarding year, with the X3 SUV taking home third place and a ‘Highly Commended’ gong and the larger X5 appearing in the top 10.

Tourists Are Flocking To This Idyllic Italian Island…But It Could Be Deadly
Tourists Are Flocking To This Idyllic Italian Island…But It Could Be Deadly

Stromboli is the most far-flung of Italy’s seven Aeolian Islands. But behind its metallic blue waters and photogenic sands is a deadly attraction.

No: we’re not talking about moreish cocktails (or drop-dead influencers), we’re talking about an active volcano.

As News.com.au yesterday reported, “Sitting among the quiet island of 300 full-time residents, a constant ticking time bomb also calls the speck of land home.”

“For nearly 90 years, visitors and those who permanently live on Stromboli have become accustomed to the rumbles that disturb the 12sq m island framed by the Tyrrhenian Sea.”

In more recent years, however, tourists seeking social media glory have started visiting Stromboli’s deadly volcanic mountain, which rises 924m from the sea and extends more than 1000m below, in increasing numbers.

This is not without consequences. Not only is there local disgruntlement with over-tourism, but there is now an increased risk of volcano-related deaths.

On that note, earlier this year two strong explosions were recorded at Stromboli’s summit, leading residents and tourists to be evacuated from the island as lava slid from all the active mouths of the volcano’s crater terrace.

As News.com.au reported, “The explosion, which produced a two-kilometere high plume of smoke, proved just how deadly the popular attraction can be.”

“The explosion killed one hiker, 35-year-old Italian man Massimo Imes, and covered the popular tourist destination in ash.”

Then, two months later, another blast produced a fast-moving mixture of gas, rock and volcanic ash that stretched several hundred metres into the sea. While no one was injured in this instance, footage emerged of a group of Italians fleeing the tiny island in panic.

But these images have not deterred travellers, with the island set to attract thousands more day-trippers next year, with the main tourist attraction being the three-hour hike to see lava erupt into the sky, up close, in real-time.

As a recent BBC report attests, the “Lighthouse of the Mediterranean” is a truly majestic sight which locals have a fierce attachment to (and are unlikely to leave). And –  as tourism stats show – it appears their bravery is contagious.

While only time will tell if we will see more incidents like earlier this year, experts have warned locals and tourists alike: you’re playing with fire.
