I Flew To Antarctica In A Day, & It Was An Absolute Breeze
I Flew To Antarctica In A Day, & It Was An Absolute Breeze

If you don’t have plans at a weekend and fancy doing something different for a day, then may I recommend jumping on a plane and flying to Antarctica? I recently went on the expedition and can categorically say it was one of the most eye-opening experiences of my entire life.

Describing itself as “the world’s most unique scenic flight,” – something I have to agree with – Antarctica Flights has been offering flights from Australia to the planet’s least-populated continent for close to 30 years.

The flights, which have used a Qantas Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner since 2020 (replacing the outgoing 747), take full advantage of the larger windows and fly you from all Australian cities to the land of snow and ice and back again, all in the space of a day. Antarctica Flights is currently operating from November through to February 2023.

But what is an Antarctic Flights flight actually like to experience? Here’s what I found.

Check-in couldn’t have been smoother

I received all my flight documentation a good week before my departure. This included information on the whole check-in process and what to do when you get to the Qantas Domestic Terminal at Sydney Airport. You don’t check-in at the usual counters, but instead go straight through security and head to the gate. Check-in didn’t officially open until 7am, but I got to the airport at around 5.30am. This meant I was able to waltz through security without any trouble at all.

Boarding is simple…unless you’re in economy

Boarding my Antarctic Flight was the same as any other. Business class and premium economy passengers get on first, while economy has to wait. So, since I was in premium economy, I was able to get onboard and find my seat without any trouble. I assumed that economy would experience the same, since there was an almost lack of need for any cabin luggage.

RELATED: Qantas 787-9 Dreamliner Premium Economy Review

I only took a small tote bag with a few essentials: phone charger, water bottle, keys and headphones. After all, you don’t land in Antarctica, so what could you possibly need to take? But I noticed there was still a hold-up when economy passengers boarded.

Antarctica is much closer than I realised

We were seeing the first remnants of landscape and ice just over 3 hours after leaving Sydney.

It’s a much more social flight than what I’m used to

Usually on long-haul flights, you either try and get some sleep straight away or put your headphones on and settle in to some in-flight entertainment. Not so with the Antarctica flight. Given the hype and excitement surrounding our excursion, passengers were talking to each other the entire duration.

I had a rather chatty passenger sitting next to me during the first half of the journey…which was a blessing and a curse. It was nice to have a conversation with someone new, but topics became a little too political for my liking and I wanted to retreat into watching a movie.

Antarctica is breathtaking…

Mount Erebus, the highest active volcano in Antarctica with an elevation of 12,448 ft. Image: DMARGE/Max Langridge

While it could be all too easy to describe Antarctica as “just a lot of snowy mountains,” or “the world’s best untouched ski resort,” it truly was a surreal experience to be able to see the virtually untouched continent out of the aeroplane windows.

You can’t quite prepare yourself for being able to see volcanoes, glaciers and huge expanses of snow and ice that, without Antarctica Flights, you would likely never see in your lifetime.

Because of the height of some of the mountains and volcanoes, we could only descend to around 18,000ft. But the height did at least allow for some great visibility across the ice shelves and glaciers. In fact, it was claimed we could actually see some 400km into the distance.

…and the pictures don’t do it justice

See below.

Views for days. Literally. Image: DMARGE/Max Langridge

Some seats do get left out

Antarctica Flights doesn’t hide the fact that some seats do, unfortunately, experience an obstructed view caused by the plane wings. And, while passengers are free to move around the cabin when cruising around over Antarctica – I ventured into business class to try and experience a little bit of the high life – some passengers didn’t have quite the same capability.

Some views from premium economy seats feature too much wing for my liking. Image: DMARGE/Max Langridge

By this, I mean a good proportion of the demographic onboard were well over 60 years old and so needed a bit of aid when walking around. If they didn’t have it, they were consigned to their seat.

The inclusion of guides was invaluable

While it was clearly mentioned in my pre-flight documents, I wasn’t actually aware we had the luxury of two expert guides onboard, telling us what we were seeing out of the windows as we passed by. The experts in this case were Peter Hicks and Peter Keage, both of whom have years of experience living and working in Antarctica.

I actually had the pleasure of sitting next to Peter Keage on the first half of the journey, so was able to talk to him about Antarctica and what he’s experienced over the years.

He told me that there were “very obvious changes [to the landscape of Antarctica] which include the thinning on the edges, particularly towards the glacier, caused by global warming.”

13 hours doesn’t seem like such a long time

The entire flight lasted around 13 hours. Antarctica Flights even said we could expect to land back at Sydney Airport around 10 p.m., and we landed at 9.59. I’m pretty sure I’ve never been on a flight that’s had such an accurate landing time.

But, because of the fact passengers were up and moving around for the middle part of the journey, and listening to the Peters commenting from the cockpit, it didn’t feel that long at all.

Yes, it is environmentally-friendly

I noticed a number of passengers asking the question, “how is flying on an emissions-emitting aeroplane in any way environmentally-friendly?” despite having bought the ticket already and knowing full well what they were getting themselves in for.

Pete Keage and Antarctica Flights both claimed that every single flight is carbon neutral. The company works with Carbon Neutral – an organisation that works with businesses to help them offset their emissions – and purchases carbon credits, which are used to help fund a reforestation project in the Yarra Yarra Biodiversity Corridor in Southwest Australia. By planting these trees, the carbon removed from the atmosphere equals the amount emitted by the flight.

Qantas service was exceptional

To be honest, this was the first time I’d been on a Qantas flight, I’ve usually been a Virgin Australia man when flying domestic. And, knowing my colleagues at DMARGE are frequent Qantas flyers, I was keen to see what all the fuss was about.

Well, colour me impressed. I couldn’t fault the service one little bit. Even before getting onboard, when the cabin crew came to our gate to prepare for the flight, they wished us all a good morning. It’s the little things that certainly go a long way. Once onboard, they were incredibly attentive and the food provided in premium economy was excellent, in my opinion. Shout out to Tyler, who only got the call he was headed to Antarctica the night before.

Dinner is served. Image: DMARGE/Max Langridge

I’ll certainly miss the welcome glass (or should I say, glasses) of champagne next time I board a domestic flight in my usual economy class. But, considering business class on short-haul and domestic flights doesn’t provides little in the way of extra worth, I’m prepared to make the compromise.

Lewis Hamilton Puts It All On Black In Crazy Las Vegas Demonstration
Lewis Hamilton Puts It All On Black In Crazy Las Vegas Demonstration

Lewis Hamilton put on a show for Formula 1 fans in Las Vegas on Saturday 5th November, rallying his Mercedes car up and down the world-famous Las Vegas strip.

The seven-time world champion showed up to the Las Vegas Grand Prix launch party, an event celebrating the city being added back in to the F1 calendar for 2023 – which is already demanding exorbitant prices for hotel rooms – in his Mercedes F1 car, which he raced up and down the iconic strip before completing some customary doughnuts for the fans.

WATCH: Lewis Hamilton Completes Some Doughnuts At The Las Vegas Grand Prix Launch Party

While doughnuts are always guaranteed to be a crowd pleaser, it was the addition of lighting underneath Lewis’ car that drew our attention. In true Tokyo Drift fashion, Lewis’ Mercedes had been fitted with colour-matching blue lighting under the car’s floor, adding an extra layer of “ooooh, aahhhh,” to his doughnut demonstration.

It’s not just us who were completely bowled over by the modded Mercedes. Several Formula 1 fans on Twitter have made a case for the under car lighting to become commonplace at night time races.

However, it almost all went wrong for the most successful Formula 1 driver in history.

The clouds of smoke and dark conditions made it difficult for Hamilton to see where he was positioning the car, at one point almost crashing the car into the barrier. Fortunately for the Briton, he was able to see the funny side afterwards, joking about it on stage with fellow drivers Sergio Perez and George Russell.

Hamilton said, “I nearly crashed. There was so much smoke I had no idea where I was.”

“I couldn’t figure out where the buildings were. I tried to pull up on the side and there was a barrier!”

Lewis Hamilton was driven back down the strip following the event, greeting the hundreds of fans in attendance. Image: @F1

Perez and Russell were also racing up the strip, past iconic buildings such as Caesar’s Palace and the Bellagio, in what was a crazy showing for Formula 1 fans that turned up to watch and proved to be a great introduction to what will undoubtedly be the spectacle of the 2023 Formula 1 race calendar.

Before all that, though, we have the 2022 season to finalise, with races in Brazil and the season-ending race in Abu Dhabi. With Max Verstappen and his Red Bull team having already secured the Drivers’ and Constructors’ Championships, it means we’re not going to get quite the same level of controversy seen at the 2021 Abu Dhabi Grand Prix.

Jake Paul Flexes His Flogness By Wearing $400,000 Jacob & Co Watch In The Gym
Jake Paul Flexes His Flogness By Wearing $400,000 Jacob & Co Watch In The Gym

Jake Paul, YouTuber, social media star, boxer and certified flog has lived up to his poser status by wearing a Jacob and Co watch, of all things, in the gym.

While Jake may have won his recent fight against Anderson Silva by unanimous decision (although, the result is currently up for debate as to whether it was rigged or not) it was the watch Paul was spotted wearing on his wrist during training that has caught our attention.

The watch is question is a Jacob and Co Bugatti Chiron 16-Zylinder Tourbillon Rose Gold (ref. BU200.40.AE.AB.A), yours for US$431,135/AU$669,340 according to Chrono24 and a touch more affordable than the Bugatti Chiron Tourbillon Baguette owned by none other than Cristiano Ronaldo.

Jake Paul has caught headlines in the past for some of his watches in his collections being fake, but as far as DMARGE can tell, the ex-Disney stars newest timepiece is the real deal.

Similar to Ronaldo’s exquisite timepiece, Jake Paul’s too is designed to look like a miniature replica of the Bugatti Chiron’s W16 engine, and has been crafted from sapphire crystal. When you push the right-hand crown of the watch, the ‘engine’ comes to life – the crankshaft turns, the 16 pistons pump up and down and two ‘turbochargers’ on the side of the engine block spin.

Where Jake’s differs to Ronaldo’s, is that the social media star’s version isn’t encrusted with baguette diamonds. Instead, it simply rocks and 18K rose gold case but retains the skeleton dial, providing a view into the W16 engine replica that provides the power. Justifying the insane price tag is a 30-degree inclined tourbillon, making it ever so slightly easier to admire when wearing it on your wrist.

Jacob and Co. describe the watch as a “true engine on the wrist”, which is perhaps fitting given Paul’s admittedly impressive gas-tank in his most recent bout with Anderson Silva. But, what we can’t quite comprehend is the fact Paul wore it to a training session.

Irish MMA fighter Conor McGregor may not be one to pass up wearing a luxury watch when hitting the gym, but we’ve only seen him wear a $90,000 platinum Rolex Day-Date. Child’s play, if you ask us.

Is Jake Paul simply trying to imitate the Irishman? If his previous escapades are anything to go by, we wouldn’t put it past him again.

What is probably more likely is it is another opportunity for Paul to show off how much money he has been making from his boxing escapades…and to flex his flogness. It seems pretty fitting though – Jake Paul’s boxing career sometimes feels more about the pageantry and spectacle than the sport itself.

Wearing a watch this expensive to workout is another clear example of that.

The Secret To Finding (& Keeping) The Right Partner
The Secret To Finding (& Keeping) The Right Partner

Making your way through the minefield that is love and relationships is never easy. They always say you’ve got to kiss a few frogs (frogettes?) before your find your prince (princess), as ultimately, we’re all searching for the elusive ‘one’. But how do you know when you’ve found them?

It’s a question that American nutritionist Max Lugavere posed to a relationship expert Jillian Turecki, on a recent episode on his The Genius Life podcast. Taking a step away from nutrition to discuss how we cultivate love, Max asked Jillian “how do we find the right person?”

WATCH: Jillian Turecki Explains How To Find The Right Partner

Jillian’s answer didn’t have so much to do with knowing what sort of person is the perfect match for us, but rather, to know who we are as a person ourselves.

“You have to know yourself, and a lot of people don’t know themselves, enough to know what is really, not only important, but what it is they absolutely need in a partner.”

You may think you already know what you want in a partner. There is, of course, the typical list of smart, funny and attractive. Although, recent research conducted by Bumble found single Australians are becoming more and more emotionally intelligent, and prioritising personality over physical appearance.

But Jillian says it can be all too “easy to know what you want in a partner, but knowing what you need, you have to understand yourself and your psychology.”

What does she mean by this? “You have to understand what you’ve been through. You have to understand where your weaknesses are,” – yes, fellas, we’ve all got ’em, don’t lie – “your vulnerabilities are, and what’s going to be right for you.”

“And then you of course need to know what your values are.”

You may not have considered what your values are up until now, and that’s perfectly ok. It’s never too late to think about what yours could be. In essence, your values are what you consider to be important in the way you live and work, and to a greater extent, what you want from a relationship. You can also find a number of online tests to give you some idea of what yours might be.

While not exactly the same, values can be compared to relationship boundaries, things you are comfortable with in your relationship and things you’re not so comfortable with.

DMARGE has previously spoken to  Samantha Jayne, Relationship Expert and Advisor to Channel 10’s The Bachelor, all about relationship boundaries and when we did, she brought up the topic of values. Of values, she said, “Think about how you would like to be treated, how you feel, and what are your thoughts when it comes to physical boundaries, emotional boundaries, how you would like to be treated.”

“If it feels good it’s positive, but if it’s negative then it sounds like a boundary was crossed. A good way to reflect is the past, if you have felt pressured into things, or felt hurt, violated or bad, then write that down and that is a broken boundary.”

This comment touches upon Jillian’s point about understanding what you’ve been through. Men can indeed be abused by women in relationships, either physically or emotionally, and if it proved to be a traumatic experience then you’re not going to want to relive it.

So, not only do you want to make sure your potential new partner doesn’t exhibit the same qualities, it’s also important to communicate these feelings with them…perhaps not on the first date, of course, but if things progress then you may want to think about having a more in-depth conversation.

RELATED: Dating Experts Share Their Tips For Scoring That Elusive Second Date

So, going back to Max Lugavere’s original question of “how do we find the right one?” It can be summarised with the age-old saying, you can’t love someone else, until you love yourself first.

Happy partner hunting!

Las Vegas Grand Prix Hotel Rooms Already Demanding Crazy Money
Las Vegas Grand Prix Hotel Rooms Already Demanding Crazy Money

Las Vegas will return to the Formula 1 race calendar in 2023 for the first time since 1982. But if you were looking to head to Sin City yourself for the action-packed race weekend, you’d best be prepared to fork out for a hotel room.

At least, that’s if you want to stay as close to the track as possible, as a screenshot of a premium king suite at Caesar’s Palace hotel – one of the iconic landmarks the Las Vegas F1 street circuit goes past – shows you will need to pay US$63,078.79 for a weekend stay, from Thursday 16 November to Sunday 19 November.

The prospect of a Las Vegas Formula 1 weekend was never going to be cheap, let’s be honest, but even we didn’t expect prices to be this high. They certainly eclipse the $2,000 a night hotel rooms Formula 1 fans had to shell out for the 2022 Singapore Grand Prix.

The screenshot in question was posted to Instagram by former Dutch F1 driver Robert Doonbros. Doornbros was a reserve and third driver for the late Jordan F1 Team, but raced for Minardi and Red Bull Racing in 2005 and 2006. And, naturally, it’s since received its fair share of comments, many of which are very tongue in cheek.

Comments include:

“If it comes with breakfast, it’s a bargain!”

“And then you have to check out at 10 on Sunday.”

and,

“Perk of Vegas is that you can just win it back. Just $60k in red and your stay is ‘free'”

The 2023 Las Vegas Grand Prix is certainly set to add some glamour and spectacle to the 2023 race calendar, and an experience that we imagine will rival the likes of the prestigious Monaco Grand Prix. The street circuit is 6.14km long, features 14 corners and speeds are expected “to be comparable to Formula 1’s original Temple of Speed – Italy’s Autodromo Nazionale Monza,” according to Formula1.com.

WATCH: The 2023 Las Vegas Formula 1 Track Drives Past Caesar’s Palace, the Bellagio and the Venetian

Indeed, corners 9 through 11 look like one demanding straight, so we wouldn’t be surprised if drivers reach similar speeds of 350km/h that are regularly experienced at Monza.

F1 CEO Stefano Domenicali has also confirmed the Las Vegas race will be the most expensive on the 2023 race calendar, “particularly from a VIP exeprience,” according to Yahoo.

The current lineup of Formula 1 stars took to the Las Vegas strip on Saturday November 5 to participate in a launch party for the 2023 event. The action saw Max Verstappen and Lewis Hamilton driving down the iconic Strip, and even through one of the city’s hotels.

You’ve Been Bicep Curling Wrong All This Time, Study Says
You’ve Been Bicep Curling Wrong All This Time, Study Says

Think you know how to gym, bro? Think again. You may think you look good curling some iron and looking at yourself in the mirror, but what if we told you there was a more effective way of getting those sleeve-busting guns?

The old adage says “curls get girls.” Sure, it usually refers to curly hair, but that’s neither here nor there.

RELATED: Best Bicep Workouts For Men 2022

When it comes to bicep curls, we’ve always been taught to bend the elbow, curl the dumbbell towards your shoulder, contract the muscle, and drop it back down to the starting position (Jo Lindner has previously said a simple twist at the top of the rep can help your guns explode further). Fairly simple, right?

Simple, yes. Effective? Perhaps not.

A new study from Edith Cowan University (ECU) has shown that this technique might not be the most efficient for building strength and size in your biceps.

The researchers found that rather than lifting and lowering the weights as is the established technique, gym-goers should focus solely on the lowering part of the movement.

The study found that the new technique was better for building arm size than regular dumbbell curls. Image: iStock

The study used three training groups – all of whom performed dumbbell curls twice a week for five weeks – and a control group.

The groups carried out the following variations:

  • Group 1 – lowering dumbbell
  • Group 2 – lifting dumbbell
  • Group 3 – lifting and lowering dumbbell alternatively

At the end of the five weeks, the results found that group 1 and group 3 recorded very similar gains in strength. In short, simply lowering the weight, was as effective as doing a normal bicep curl.

Group 1 – where participants only lowered the dumbbell– were also found to have the greatest improvement in muscle thickness out of all three groups.

This is despite only performing half as many repetitions as those who performed the regular bicep curl technique, given it also requires a lifting motion.

ECU’s Professor Ken Nosaka said, “This latest study shows that we can be far more efficient in the time we spend exercising and still see significant results by focusing on eccentric muscle contractions [by lowering the weight].”

What does this look like in practice?

The study’s authors say focusing on lowering the weight can improve a number of exercises, such as bicep curls and shoulder press. Image: @AndreaPicquadio

The authors of the study recommend that lifters use two hands to help raise the weight up, before using only one arm to lower the weight.

According to them, this technique can be performed with a number of gym exercises, namely:

  • Bicep curls
  • Overhead extension
  • Front raise
  • Shoulder press

In terms of leg exercises, the researchers say that the technique can also be applied, by using two legs to raise the weight, and one to lower it again.

This is applicable for:

  • Knee extensions
  • Leg curls
  • Calf raises

This is only one study, and it will take more research before the strength and conditioning world adopt this technique into the lifting “meta”.

Bicep curls which focus on the lowering movement are established, but to completely forgo the lifting element is new development altogether.

But, if you find yourself planning on going to the gym tonight before you go out, perhaps this is an exercise to try to build those big biceps.

10 Best Camel Coats For Men | Stay Stylish & Warm 2022
10 Best Camel Coats For Men | Stay Stylish & Warm 2022

A camel coat is a formal winter piece, promising to never go out of style thanks to its classic silhouette and luxurious feel. It’s hard not to feel effortlessly chic and confident, as when wearing one of these coats, there’s nothing you can’t accomplish.

Also, you can layer these bad boys over a cashmere sweater or a cotton jumper, achieving an instantly put-together look. However, this coat is highly versatile too – pair it with a hoodie and some jeans for a great off duty look, as there are very few items that don’t pair with this rich tan colour.

Different Types Of Camel Coats

Camel hair coats

This overcoat has been a winter staple for over 60 years but first emerged onto the scene after Jaeger designed the first camel coat at the end of World War I, putting London style at the forefront of fashion trends. The coat then remerged 20 years later, after silk, leather, and wool materials were scarce during the Second World War, so designers began turning to camel hair once again.

Many brands today craft their coats out of authentic camel hair, as it provides highly insulating properties and is thermo-regulated while being exceptionally comfortable and soft. Coats made out of real camel hair is rather expensive though, so if you’re looking for a cheaper alternative you may just want a camel coloured coat that’s been made out of other fabrics. However, a real camel coat is a real investment; you’ll wear this luxurious coat for the rest of your life which makes it worth every penny.

Camel coloured coats

Many camel coats nowadays aren’t actually constructed out of camel hair. These coats are instead dyed to be a camel colour and typically crafted out of wool, cashmere, or cotton materials, meaning while a camel coloured coat isn’t as luxurious as a real camel hair coat, they still provide a high-quality look and feel.

We’ve rounded up the best camel coats for men available, and whether you’re after the real deal – a coat made with camel hair – or you simply want a camel coloured coat to save a little money, you’ll find the perfect camel coat for you below.

Lewis Hamilton Test Drives The SUV Everyone Will Want In 2023
Lewis Hamilton Test Drives The SUV Everyone Will Want In 2023

He’s normally all about rear-wheel drive cars, but Sir Lewis has swapped his Formula 1 car for an INEOS Grenadier in his latest stunt, taking the highly anticipated off-roader for a spin throughout the British countryside.

The seven-time Formula 1 World Champion joined INEOS CEO and father of the Grenadier, Sir Jim Ratcliffe for a test drive of the tough new SUV, which is a spiritual successor to the discontinued, original Land Rover Defender.

RELATED: This Tough 4×4 Is The Land Rover Defender Revival We’ve All Been Waiting For

Hamilton didn’t hold back, driving the car at high speeds on the bitumen (it’s cool to see that even in a big 4×4, he still tries to take the racing line) and then ploughing ahead off-road. It’s a hell of a watch – and cool to see the normally guarded Lewis share a bit of banter with Jim.

We’re just a bit jealous he’s got to drive it before the rest of us…

Watch Lewis Hamilton go off-roading in the INEOS Grenadier below.

INEOS, a British multinational chemicals company that’s mostly in the business of making plastics or natural gas production, has been the talk of the motoring industry ever since they unveiled their plans to produce the Grenadier, which they hope to sell to both the public as well as commercial clients such as miners, oil field workers and farmers.

Like the classic Defender, the Grenadier features boxy bodywork, a steel ladder chassis, solid axles and will be available as either an ‘estate’ or with a ute tray. Unlike the classic Defender (or at least early versions of it), it will feature multi-link coil spring suspension as well as modern safety aids like airbags and LED/xenon lights.

Set to be powered by either a petrol or diesel 3.0L BMW turbocharged inline-six, INEOS is also working closely with Hyundai to develop hydrogen fuel cell technology (a savvy move, considering INEOS produces 300,000 tonnes of hydrogen a year).

It will be produced in Hambach, France, previously the main production site for the Smart ForTwo: production has been stymied by the COVID-19 pandemic, however. Orders are now open in Australia with customer deliveries slated for late 2022, although the bulk of orders will start rolling out from early in 2023, CarExpert relates.

The Grenadier has put through serious off-road and inclement weather testing in Austria, Italy, Sweden, and most recently, outback South Australia, where the testing team was caught in a “one-in-a-hundred-year flood event”. INEOS plans on returning to Australia to complete testing, along with undertaking an expedition of the Canning Stock Route, Drive reports.

We wonder if we’ll see any bouncing around at the Australian Grand Prix as well…
