Hey, guess what Shallow Hal? Brains are more important than beauty. As much as exercise and eating right will help you live longer, so will tying the knot with an intelligent lady.
Yes, that’s right. New research from the University of Aberdeen has found that men who marry smart women live longer, happier lives and are less likely to suffer from Alzheimer’s disease and dementia.
The study looked at the health of identical twins and found that their environment, including who they married, influenced their risk of dementia and that having an intelligent wife was a factor that protected against degenerative disease.
In the same way getting stuck into a crossword or a little Sunday morning sudoku can boost your brain power, intelligent women who challenge the brain by engaging their husbands in intellectual conversations also act as a barrier against dementia.
Even the men who showed physical signs of dementia after a brain scan weren’t feeling the symptoms of the disease thanks to the witty (and most probably feisty) women in their lives.
Alzheimer’s disease is the most common form of dementia in people over 65, but along with a brainy wife, a lifetime of intellectual stimulation, higher levels of education, occupational and cognitive activity are all associated with a lower risk of dementia.
Behind every good man, there’s clearly a good woman.

Land-bound Ferrari machines are nothing uncommon if you know the right places to look. A Ferrari speedboat however is something to truly savour.
In preparation for the legendary Grand Prix of Monaco this month, RM Sothebys will be heading up one hell of an auction featuring some of the world’s most exotic machines. One of them being this 1990 Riva Ferrari 32 built as a collaboration between Enzo Ferrari himself and the then CEO of Cantieri Riva, Gino Gervasoni.

The iconic Rosso Corsa red gets splashed across the sleek F1-inspired design which is rather futuristic for the era it came from. Power is derived from twin 390hp V8 engines whilst the instrumentation itself is typical of its period. Only 40 examples were built so the Riva Ferrari 32 is bound to be a collector’s piece.
The boat will be auctioned on Saturday the 14th of May and is expected to fetch between €180,000 – €220,000. You can place your bid here.

Prepare yourselves, cocktail aficionados. The people behind Maker’s Mark bourbon are gearing up to kick off a wild week of concocting the world’s best cocktails across some of the city’s finest bars and hidden drinking holes.
The Maker’s Mark Old Fashioned Week event will run from May 12th to the 20th, coinciding nicely with Sydney Fashion Week. That’s right – tight threads and handcrafted cocktails will be joining forces across the city to make for one stylish celebration.
Participating bars will all feature their own unique and modern take on the old fashioned cocktail with no two recipes being the same. Bar teams from Sydney’s The Commons, Earl’s Juke Joint, Papa Gede’s, Ramblin’ Rascal Tavern, Riley St Garage, The Roosevelt, Shirt Bar, Soda Factory, Stitch Bar, The Village Inn, The Whisky Room at The Clock Hotel and The Wild Rover will all be participating so finding your favourite cocktail will be a mission of the fun kind.
There will also be a launch party on May 11 at Newtown’s Earl’s Juke Joint whilst the week will also come with an intimate ‘True Maker’s’ workshop at The Wild Rover on the 18th where guests can get tips from career handcrafters such as artist Anthony Lister and surfboard shaper Simon Anderson.
The Perfect Blend NSW State Final Winner, Dale Schoon of Earl’s Juke Jointsaid that, “the great thing about an Old Fashioned is it makes whisky more approachable. Maker’s Mark is perfect for the job. Switching rye out for wheat makes for a sweeter, softer spirit and in turn, a gentle sipping Old Fashioned with a long, warm finish.”
Tickets for the True Maker’s session will be on sale next week via Ticketbooth and come with an Old Fashioned on arrival.

Black and white doesn’t need to be boring according to this spectacular villa located in Sweden’s Rönninge.
Decked out in faux taxidermy, matte black finishings and stark white ceilings and walls, this is the modern Scandinavian approach to art living.
The space has a fire place as its centrepiece where the lounge, dining and kitchen all flow into one another. The bathroom is an all masculine affair with granite stoned walls, a sauna and vintage boxing gloves offset by white furnishings.
When the season gets warmer, head outside to the brisk on the wooden deck patio complete with an entertainment area which carries on the white and black theme from inside.

Brazil is a vibrant and colourful country, and architect Diego Revollo has designed a Sao Paulo apartment that’s equally eye-catching. What it lacks in colour the 360˚ Apartment makes up for in abundant texture and bold print.
The focal point of the space is the kitchen, which was outfitted in Italian porcelain tile that covers the floor then continues up the walls and onto the ceiling. The muted grey and white palette ensures that while the room is undeniably daring, it doesn’t veer into psychedelic territory.
The colour scheme continues into the main living area, which is partially open to the kitchen, and throughout the rest of the apartment. Shades of grey are paired with warm woods and metals, and mixed with a variety of interesting textures. Plush velvet chairs create an alluring clash next to other minimalist furniture and sleek copper details.
Also of note is the balcony, which was added and designed as an extension of the living room. The same tile from the kitchen is used on the balcony floor to tie the spaces together and add an extra dash of audacious design.

Trust one of the most sexually active nations in the world to dream up an erotic theme park. Yes, that’s right. A group of Brazilian investors who have cottoned onto the fact that sex, does in fact, sell are trying to put their money into the development of an adult-only theme park called ErotikaLand.
Located near the city of Piracicaba (around 2 hours from São Paulo), ErotikaLand is already ruffling feathers well before its projected opening in 2018.
The theme park has added fuel to the debate over public displays of sexuality in Brazil e.g. barely there bikinis, scantily clad Carnival dancers and short-stay love motels.
“We cannot be known as the capital of sex,” Matheus Erler, a member of the Christian Socialist Party who leads the Piracicaba City Council, told reporters. He said he was worried that the park would attract “debauched individuals.”
Mauro Morata, the businessman behind ErotikaLand has made it clear that the theme park will be built outside city limits and no, there won’t be any actual sex allowed on the premise (sorry, folks). Despite further objections from municipal leaders of surrounding areas, Morata is pressing on with the project in emphasising the economic benefits of ErotikaLand: more jobs and more money coming in.
It’s not all smut, either. Investors say ErotikaLand will promote a healthy approach to sex, condom use and the “sex playground” is PG, with a labyrinth, Ferris wheel and water slide. There will be, however, an erotic sculpture park, genitalia-shaped rides, a museum, and snack bar serving aphrodisiac dishes. The $100 admission fee will also include access to a “7D” cinema complete with vibrating seats, as well as to a “train of pleasure” with gogo boys and girls and a nudist pool.
“This won’t be a place for nuns, but it’s not like we’re trying to recreate Sodom and Gomorrah,” Mr. Morata said. “If attendees want to take things to another level, they can go to a nearby motel — which we will operate.” You have to cover all your bases, right?

Ah, those pesky lockout laws. Once a common gripe felt amongst the club owners and nightlife loving population of Sydney, and now a worldwide beef that has not only affected the image of Australia on a global scale but has started to impinge on the late night partying of arguably three of the world’s most famous celebrities.
According to Merivale’s submission to the Callinan review of lockout laws, celebrities including Drake, Madonna, Marilyn Manson, The Smashing Pumpkins, Ed Sheeran and even the late pop star Prince, have all been denied access to Sydney venues like Ivy and Establishment on arriving after 1:30am because of the lockout laws.
Despite having remained rather tight-lipped on Sydney’s lockout laws debate, the submission is Merivale owner Justin Hemmes’ first public criticism of the legislation. In the submission Hemmes says he’s concerned that Sydney will “regulate ourselves into oblivion” as landmark city and Kings Cross venues close, and thousands of jobs disappear as hospitality business lose up to 30% of their turnover.
“Broadly speaking, we support common-sense measures to reduce alcohol-related violence and we don’t know any hospitality operator that doesn’t. However, we have serious concerns about some blanket measures implemented under the Act that target a handful but affect many… As a city, we have come too far to now abandon our rightful place as a leading international hospitality destination through a stubborn adherence to measures that are having damaging impacts,” the submission reads.
The likes of Drake, Madonna and Prince aren’t the only a-listers who have experienced the wrath of Sydney’s lockout laws. Earlier this year we reported on Wu Tang Clan and their recent tour of Australia where at a show the group promised to overturn the laws.

So you’ve sorted the inside of your house. You’ve spent a stupid amount of money at Ikea and even more at places where the furniture comes pre-assembled and you’re ready to enjoy all those hours spent traipsing around looking at lamps and doorknobs. But wait, what about the outside?Every man of style should have an accompanying garden or outdoor space that reflects his taste for the finer things in life. You don’t want to entertain amongst knee-length grass sitting on crates next to the barbie. Take some much needed inspiration from our galley of 15+ amazing outdoor spaces and get yourself to Bunnings, or at least give your landscaper a call.Or you can just check out these tips from hospitality, interiors and styling expert Belinda Cendron of Sourceress.
- Consider the purpose of the space. Before you plonk a council clean-up chair and wine barrel table and proudly exclaim “et voila” …. let’s think about this a little more. Is it a dining area, a casual drinks lounge or a sunny spot by the pool? Dress it accordingly.
- Consider lighting. No one likes playing hide and seek with the spider and his web. Plug-in outdoor fairy lights (not of the multicolour variety please) can be turn your outdoors into an oasis. Simple professionally mounted wall lights or electric candles can also work a treat.
- If landscaping not an option, potted plants are the way forward for you. The trick is really great plants. Spend on scale. You can go all design with the pots if you must, but I would focus on a few large succulents or fragrant trees (think potted jasmine or magnolia) in a simple concrete or other natural material pot. No black or white glazed pots, boys. Just no.
- If your “yard” consists of a concrete slab, or even worse, a tiled situation, cover that up with an outdoor rug. Great for coverage, a sense of space and softer underfoot.
- Always a doormat at the door. This is 100% the best preventative to dragging dirt and muck through the house and avoid scratching up your newly waxed hardwood floors. This is one time you don’t want to “bring the outdoors in”
- Final thought, many side tables can double as extra stools when party starts, and when not in use, pop a plant on it.

A few short months after listing his luxe Tribeca loft, J.Crew CEO Mickey Drexler has put a second property in the fashionable New York City neighbourhood up for sale.
Like the first unit, this one boasts interiors designed by Thierry Despont. Despont transformed the former warehouse into a single-family home that balances industrial details (like exposed steel, wood, and brick) against sleek, modern finishes. The home measures about 9,000 square feet with five bedrooms, five storeys, a sauna and gym in the cellar, and a rooftop terrace with views of the Hudson River.
It’s the quirky details that make the property special. The building, constructed in the 1890s, was originally used as a coffee roasting plant and still has signage for one of the coffee companies that occupied it. The original elevator also remains intact. According to the listing, the entrance hall is inspired by the Maison de Verre in Paris and there’s a “sprawling 1,500-square-foot living room with over 12-foot-high ceilings at the top of the building”.
Drexler bought the townhouse in 2008 for US$5.5 million, says the Wall Street Journal, and is now looking to unload it for US$29.95 million.
