Nutrition Expert Reveals The ‘Gut Healing’ Foods You Need To Know
Nutrition Expert Reveals The ‘Gut Healing’ Foods You Need To Know

We’ve made leaps and bounds as a society since Paleolithic times. But a host of modern problems have come with our success – like IBS (irritable bowel syndrome). But never fear: there are ways to solve this problem. Enter: fibre. Fibre can be a great way to improve your gut health, but you ought to be careful about how you consume it, as it’s not a one size fit all approach.

On that note: you may have been on the receiving end of friends or family telling you, “you’ve got to eat more fibre”. And, while for the most part that is true, since fibre is an essential nutrient, there are actually different types, and you should be keeping a close eye on how much of each type you’re putting into your body.

But first, what exactly is fibre? Fibre refers to an essential group of carbohydrates that we need to consume on a daily basis. Predominantly found in plant-based foods, such as fruit, vegetables and whole grains, the recommended daily intake is 38 grams for men and 25 grams for women. You can’t get fibre from meat or dairy products.

As we’ve just mentioned, there are, in fact, different types, which have equally different effects on the body. While you can split fibres into two groups: dietary fibre and functional fibre, a more useful way of separating them is by their solubility, since this can give a greater insight into their health effects.

These two group names should giveaway which type of fibre does what. Soluble fibre blends with water in the gut, while insoluble fibre does not. The former can help control your blood sugar and cholesterol levels, while the latter essentially acts as a bulking agent to help prevent constipation.

While it may be a little bit stomach-churning to talk about, you need to make sure you consume enough fibre to help normalise your bowel movements. It’s also claimed that a diet high in fibre can minimise your risk of contracting type 2 diabetes.

If you weren’t aware of these differences, don’t worry; you’re not alone. American nutritionist Max Lugavere recently shared a post on Instagram that called out this very fact.

“When it comes to eating for gut health, there are different strategies to take, and there’s no one-size-fits-all recommendation,” he says.

“Lots of people will say ‘eat more fibre!’ but not all fibres are the same, and further, not everybody has the same tolerance to fibre. You have to figure out what works for you.”

He goes on to explain soluble and insoluble fibre is a slightly easier-to-understand way: “Soluble fibre absorbs water and forms a gel, and feeds the bacteria that live in your large intestine, collectively known as your gut microbiome.”

“As a result, those bacteria churn out powerful metabolites including short-chain fatty acids like butyrate. This type of fibre may help improve symptoms in people with IBS (Irritable Bowel Syndrome).”

“Insoluble fibre doesn’t absorb water, but instead acts as an abrasive broom, sweeping up your GI tract. This type of fibre is usually well tolerated but can cause or exacerbate symptoms for some sensitive people, including people with IBS.”

On top of soluble and insoluble fibre, Max adds there is another type, known as resistant starch. This, Max says, “is a form of carbohydrate that acts like a fibre, is resistant to digestion and instead, feed those microbes at the latter end of your GI tract.” The GI tract comprises all the organs that make up your digestive system.

“There are multiple types of resistant starch,” Max continues, “One form is found in unripe bananas/mangos, and another can be created when you cook and cool a starch, like a potato or rice.”

“This is why sushi rice is actually quite healthy, because it’s cooked and cooled.”

DMARGE reached out to Australian celebrity personal trainer Sam Wood, to gain some greater insight into the different types of fibre and ways we can all navigate the nutritional minefield.

“The nutrition team at 28 and I agree with what Max is saying…There are different types of fibre and each have their unique role in the health of our gut. This is one of the reasons why we recommend eating a variety of fibre rich foods at 28; that way we’re ticking all of the boxes, including each type of fibre and experiencing the different benefits they have to offer.”

“Thankfully my real food philosophy means that I’m always eating plenty of fibre-rich foods. Between vegetables, whole grains, beans, lentils, nuts and seeds, there’s guaranteed to be at least one good source of fibre in each of my meals. The same goes for all of our recipes on the 28 meal plan.”

Ultimately, no type of fibre is actually bad for you, they all play a part. But if you do experience any irritable symptoms after eating some fibre-rich foods, you should now be able to identify which type it is, and reduce it from your diet.

‘Fire Up The Porkfolios’: McRib Index Has Investors Licking Their Lips
‘Fire Up The Porkfolios’: McRib Index Has Investors Licking Their Lips

Some investors are looking to beef up their portfolios now that McDonald’s cult favourite menu item the McRib is back.

Others have already done some shovelling, with the move, to some degree, already being priced into the market.

But is this astrology for investors or a real thing? First, allow us to explain what the McRib is. The McRib is boneless pork ribs on a burger type thing. It was first added to McDonald’s menus in 1981 around Kansas city, but was pulled from the menu four years later.

Since then it has become a weird kind of cult favourite. And after years of lobbying and requests on the internet and social media, it has gained something of “icon status.”

Thanks to that, it has been reintroduced to the menu, sporadically, to please these loyalists, as well as because it sometimes commercially suits McDonalds. As Alexander Chernev, a professor of marketing at Northwestern University’s Kellogg School of Management told CNN: “When you have these exclusive products, which exist for a short period of time, it gives people a reason to come to the store.”

According to James Whelan, Investment Manager at VFS Group in Sydney, there is another reason you should be paying attention to McDonalds’ occasional re-introduction of the McRib.

Pork Price Graph. Image via Business Insider

Mr Whelan told DMARGE that the “McRib index” can actually tell you something about the stock market.

Mr Whelan explained that, in a sense, “McDonalds is not a fast-food chain so much as a major commodities purchaser.”

“Imagine how much beef they need to fill their burgers; imagine how expensive that is.”

“Now imagine there’s an alternative.”

“You can’t change how much you charge for a Big Mac; you’ve got to keep it pretty stable over time. But the price of beef does go up. There’s only so much you can hedge before it gets too expensive to hedge.”

Mr Whelan continued: “The McRib was originally unpopular [then] started to move up in popularity. But here’s the thing: every single time the McRib gets offered by McDonalds it’s an indication to show that actually pork prices are at a low because you need to lock in that much pork to feed a hundred million people who need to eat something.”

“It also means for every person who buys a McRib – that’s one less person who’s going to buy your Big Mac. This is great [for McDonalds] because [during times when the McRib is offered] beef is really expensive and you’ve got to stock that beef and keep it frozen. So you’re saving on the beef and you’re saving on the pork. Fantastic.”

Mr Whelan then explained the McRib index – a metric which has certain groups in such places as Reddit frothing and theorising (in one Reddit trading community, a community member started a thread two months ago, when McDonald’s announced the McRib would be on the menu, entitled: “The McRib Index Is Flashing”).

Source: YCharts.com

The McRib index can be seen in the above graphic – over a 7 year period from 2010 to 2017, every time the McRib has been available, the S&P 500 has had a higher daily return than when it was not available.

Though this is not a direct correlation, it is interesting for a number of reasons.

“Is there something that you can pull out of the market that when pork is low and beef is high (and when McDonalds decides to launch the McRib)? What is it about this particular time in the cycle? When the McRib is available in the US the average daily return of the S&P 500 is 0.1% – which is pretty good,” Mr Whelan told DMARGE.

“When the McRib isn’t offered it’s only 0.03%.”

That’s three times as much per day when the McRib is offered.

Mr Whelan also shared that he thinks there is going to be a food crisis next year, thanks to the La Niña climate leading to wet weather (on the whole) for Australia and dry weather for America, which leads to food scarcity and a need for fertilizer (and, by extension gas, which is used to create fertiliser).

Looking at financial markets as a whole, Mr Whelan also told DMARGE that though there are a lot of indicators that are flashing red, we’ve still got a Fed and reserve banks all around the world “conditioned to stimulate markets” and still got “money sloshing around.”

“As much as tapering is in play they haven’t pulled that rug away.” In other words: for now, there’s no need to worry too much about the red flashing lights that some believe could signal a crash should occur, for the time being.

Jaeger-LeCoultre & Henry Wilson Team Up On ‘World’s Most Beautiful Watch Holder’
Jaeger-LeCoultre & Henry Wilson Team Up On ‘World’s Most Beautiful Watch Holder’

The following article was produced in partnership with Jaeger-LeCoultre.

Jaeger-LeCoultre has always stood for timeless design. The 188-year-old Swiss watchmaker, known as “the watchmaker’s watchmaker,” has one of the most extensive and illustrious back catalogues in the history of haute horlogerie – it’s truly remarkable how designs and innovations Jaeger-LeCoultre developed hundreds of years ago remain so relevant and regularly utilised even today.

Their most iconic design – and arguably the epitome of timeless design in watchmaking (a delicious contradiction) – is the Reverso. Celebrating its 90th anniversary this year, this Art Deco-styled, highly versatile timepiece remains as modern and refreshing as it was back in the 1930s. It’s a true classic that at once is a great example of ‘form follows function’ as well as elegance and artistry.

As part of the Reverso’s 90th-anniversary celebrations, Jaeger-LeCoultre has collaborated with award-winning independent Australian designer Henry Wilson on a stylish and functional home for one’s watch, titled Time & Place – a stunning tribute to the iconic timepiece as well as a stunning piece of artistic design in its own right.

Time & Place is a watch holder par excellence. Like the Reverso’s famous hinged case, Time & Place offers two entirely different sides: one with a single watch holder and one with space for two watches. The three layers of the former represent the three signature gadroons that hug the Reverso’s case, while the simple circular holders of the latter remind us of the cyclical nature of time, as well as the classic shape of a watch dial.

Time & Place in aluminium

Cast in either sleek aluminium or dapper bronze, Time & Place’s textured appearance gives it the appearance of a future relic. Supple leather bases provide a soft and luxurious place for your precious timekeeping beauties to rest, waiting for their next journey upon your wrist.

Time & Place truly is a piece of art that complements the mechanical artistry of a high-end timepiece as well as stands out as an exemplar of modern Australian design. It’s restrained, yet beautiful. Rugged, yet demure. In short, it’s the perfect companion for a watch and something that deserves pride of place in your home.

“We are delighted to be supporting Australian design and Henry Wilson with this gift,” Justin Devaux, Country Manager of Jaeger-LeCoultre Australia & New Zealand relates.

“The story of Reverso embodies Jaeger-LeCoultre’s eternal pursuit of beauty and aesthetic refinement, something which has translated into this project.”

Time & Place is a limited-edition watch holder available exclusively at Jaeger-LeCoultre’s Melbourne & Sydney Boutiques upon purchase of any watch or clock, from Monday November 22nd and into the new year. Time & Place will be physically on display in our boutiques over the holiday period & available until stocks last.

Health Hacker’s Controversial Sleep Advice Leaves American Couples Divided
Health Hacker’s Controversial Sleep Advice Leaves American Couples Divided

American biohacker, author, and entrepreneur Dave Asprey has shared a sleep hack that will leave couples divided – literally.

The hack? Sleeping separately – something many couples might assume means the death of romance. But, according to Asprey, it doesn’t have to feel that way. Why? Watch the video below to find out.

In the clip, which is an extract from a recent episode of @thehumanupgradepodcast, Asprey explains why you should “stop sleeping with someone in your bed,” explaining, “if I sleep by myself, I sleep better.”

“What Lana and I do is we have separate beds and both beds are large enough for both of us so if we want to sleep together we can but on a normal night and neither of us wants to rip the covers off the other ones…. separate beds… if you can swing it.”

“Even in the same room, separate beds are beneficial. You still have to get physical touch, but sleeping separately if you manage to get another couple of hours of quality life and you don’t wake up like a zombie I would do that all day long.”

Some followers loved the advice, while others were very much “nup.”

Movement coach Stephanie Birch commented on the post: “As someone who likes to face-plant & sprawl out on the bed with a pillow over my face…YES! .”

Adventure lover Tristan Hamm, however, wrote: “When you see Bae liked this post .”

Holistic nutritionist Joy McCarthy provided a bit of balance, writing: “My hubby and I sleep together in the same bed really well… 11 years. But if one of us is not well and restless with a cold or whatever, we go sleep on the couch. Luckily that doesn’t happen very often.”

Instagram user @biohackingbrittany, however, said “I love cuddling too much.” Asprey replied: “You can still cuddle… And the more recreational forms of cuddling…Then you just go back to a different bed.”

Perhaps sleeping in a different bed to your partner, then, shouldn’t be seen as such a taboo topic, or so significant a romance-killing milestone in your relationship as many people think?

Over on TikTok, various other couples have discussed this issue, providing further advice for those who want to sleep better with another person.

Watch the video below to get sleep advice and hacks for couples, via various TikTok creators

Asprey has also said in recent weeks that your circadian rhythm is crucial to your metabolism. Which is yet another reason to prioritize getting high-quality sleep – a topic DMARGE has written about at length.

Tourist’s ‘Criminal’ Croissant Eating Hack Sparks Furious Debate In France
Tourist’s ‘Criminal’ Croissant Eating Hack Sparks Furious Debate In France

Watch Carolin Lauffenburger’s controversial croissant eating technique in the video below

If you want to eat your croissant like a true Parisian, you really need to be dipping it in hot chocolate or coffee. Or do you?

A recent video just brought this debate to life, posted to Instagram by fashion & beauty photographer @carolinlauffenburger (and reposted by blog @parisiansnobiety). The video shows Caroline, who is based in Berlin but who appears to spend a lot of time in Paris, eating her croissant the ‘true’ French way, and it shocked and disgusted some of her (and parisiansnobiety’s) Instagram followers.

The only issue? Technically, they are wrong and Caroline was right. Or at least, she was eating her croissant in true Paris fashion (some claim) – even if she was using a technique that might give soggy food haters anxiety.

The video was posted to Instagram by @parisiansnobiety, with the caption: “How do you eat your croissant?”. The video shows Caroline dipping her croissant, whole, into what looks to be a Cappucino, then taking a bite.

Many followers of the Parisian fashion and lifestyle blog thumbed their phones with outrage, writing such comments as “please don’t do that” and “that’s a crime madam.”

Image: Screenshot of Parisian Snobiety’s comment section, by DMARGE

Another commenter wrote: “What happened to breaking a piece with your hands.”

“Blasphemy,” another quipped. It didn’t end there. Further comments included: “Well…. Stop it, thank you” and “just tear a piece and then dip it… please…”

What the video really exposed, however, is the ignorance of some of the outraged followers. Why? Because when DMARGE contacted the administrators of Parisian Snobiety’s page we were told that dipping your croissant into your coffee is actually “the most famous way of eating it.”

“This is one of the many ways to eat a croissant in France,” @parisiansnobiety told DMARGE. “Just a little bit of history croissant didn’t come from France at all but Marie Antoinette brought it to France in 1770 as it’s her favourite Viennese pastry.”

“Today there’s no right or wrong way of eating a croissant BUT the most famous way of eating it is by dipping the croissant in hot chocolate or coffee.”

“You can either dip the entire croissant like the one on the video, Or you can pinch off the top tip of the croissant and try to dip the croissant by pieces in the coffee or drink of your choice. Next one that some parisians also do is to eat croissant with orange marmalade but personally I’m not a fan of that route.”

We were also told: “Never ever try hard to act French ’cause they will know. They can sense it from a mile away haha.”

Over on Caroline’s personal account some choice comments from French people included: “sacrilège” and “inadmissible sérieusemeeeent olalala” (amid others like: “Yes. Another pastry dipper”).

Another wrote: “Un français ne fait pas tremper les croissants 🥐 mais les tartines au beurre…” (a French person does not soak croissants, but toast in butter”).

Another wrote: “Heuuu nan tu le trempes pas dans ton caftar.”

The controversy continues…

Australia’s Stunning ‘Lagos Alternative’ Is Blowing Up On Social Media
Australia’s Stunning ‘Lagos Alternative’ Is Blowing Up On Social Media

A South Australian beach that looks a bit European has Australian social media users dusting off their cameras and charging their phones.

That beach? Port Willunga. One of the Fleurieu Peninsula’s most photographed beaches, Port Willunga features the remains of the Port Willunga Jetty and some cool little caves that wouldn’t look out of place in Portugal’s Algarve region.

The beach is located 35kms south of Adelaide. Like many destinations lately, it’s been blowing up on social media and being compared to some vaguely similar landscapes overseas (possibly due to people going stir crazy about not being able to travel overseas).

The Daily Mail recently reported that Port Wilunga’s sands were “reminiscent of Europe’s picturesque south” and that “caves carved into the cliffs by fishermen who once stored boats there are now Instagram hotspots used as backdrops by millennial and Gen Z travellers.”

They also compared it to a Sicilian island.

Browsing through the beach’s photo page on Instagram, one sees it’s not just the caves visitors are enjoying, but also seeing sections of the hull of the Star of Greece, a cargo ship that came a cropper in 1888, and which has become one of South Australia’s most popular diving spots.

Port Willunga has also made its way over to TikTok, as you can see in the video at the very top of this article, which was taken by TikTok user @salty_aura.

Sand, caves and a shipwreck aren’t the only things Port Willunga offers. On the edge of the cliff top is the Star of Greece restaurant. The restaurant offers diners superb vistas along the coast and (at low tide) some of the remains of the shipwreck can be seen.

Another attraction is the nearby Aldinga historic township, where you can score baked goods, cafes, clothing boutiques and grocery shops (and markets in summer).

Check out the following images of Portugal’s Algarve region and South Australia’s Port Willunga, and decide for yourself which you’d prefer to visit.

Dolph Lundgren’s Latest Relationship Sparks Age-Old Debate
Dolph Lundgren’s Latest Relationship Sparks Age-Old Debate

Society gives us various ‘rules’ we all feel we should follow. We all need to be slim and have perfect hair and teeth to be deemed ‘attractive.’ Oh and we need to buy a house, have children and have a well-paying career in order to be seen as ‘successful.’ With regards to heterosexual relationships, the man should be older than the woman, but not by much.

If there is a large age gap between a couple, others are quick to judge and pass comment. But why?

We’ve seen before in the case of Brad Pitt, who back in August was dating German model 27-year-old Nicole Poturalski, 29-years his junior. This seemingly happy relationship sparked outrage from the public, with many quickly assuming Nicole was only with Brad for his money and fame, because, what would a 27-year-old and a 56-year-old have in common?

Fast forward to today, and similar comments are now being directed towards actor and Rocky IV star, Dolph Lundgren. The Swedish actor, who is 64, was recently spotted touching down in Greece – where he is set to reprise his role in the action series of movies The Expendables – alongside his 24-year-old fiancée, Norwegian fitness expert Emma Krokdal.

Dolph and Emma became engaged on 29 June 2020, so considering they’re still engaged, by Hollywood standards, we’d call it a success and a genuine relationship. Dolph is quoted as saying to Muscle & Health:

“They say youth is wasted on the young and whilst that’s not true for everybody – like Emma – it is true for me because I matured very late.”

“I feel very lucky that I have someone like Emma at this age, it’s changed my life and I hope I can give her the kind of help and support that takes a lot of time to discover and amass. I would say that right now I’m the most balanced as an individual I’ve ever been.”

Regardless of his words, his relationship has been met with much criticism, with many people unable to fathom how it is possibly genuine.

Comments left in the comments section beneath The Daily Mail‘s reporting of Dolph and Emma’s arrival in Greece include: “40 yr age gap disgusting.”

“He’s practically old enough to be her grandfather FFS.”

Another comment was: “He must think of himself, as so attractive to young women. He thinks she is there because of his good looks and sparkling personality. Wrong she is there for your dosh and any freebies going. Yuk imagine being that young and sleeping with somebody as old as your grandad. Spew spew.”

As we said in our reporting of Brad Pitt’s relationship in 2020, it has been proven several times that men can successfully date women older than them, and in these cases, the guy may even be praised for landing himself a “cougar.” Yet, when an older man dates a much younger woman, society is quick to scoff, and a debate inevitably starts. Some argue that so long as both partners are consenting adults, anything goes. Others say big age gaps are still weird.

Some women are perfectly happy to date men much older than them. In the case of Italian businessman Gianluca Vacchi, for example, he had a child with his partner who is 27-years his junior, at the age of 52, suggesting that it is possible for couples with age gaps that larger than what our culture would deem ‘normal’ to exist in (seeming) harmony.

Yet more fuel to add to the fire of the age-old debate.

France’s Coffee Is Now So Bad Tourists Are Bringing Moka Pots To Paris
France’s Coffee Is Now So Bad Tourists Are Bringing Moka Pots To Paris

Food. Wine. Fashion. Romance. There are a lot of things which are renowned to be better in France (and particularly Paris). But coffee is apparently no longer one of them.

That’s right: while romantic notions that French coffee still has a certain je ne se quoi about it still exist on Twitter…

…according to some of those that have recently visited The City Of Love & Burnt Cappuccinos, reality is a little different.

Some tourists claim France has not kept up with the evolution of coffee culture, and they are so dismayed by this they have resolved to bring their own Moka pots with them “the next time we visit Paris.”

Our evidence for this? A recent Instagram post by daily fashion and lifestyle page Parisian Snobiety, which pointed out 5 embarrassing faux pas tourists should avoid in Paris (if they want to seem more French). The video was credited to Architectural Designer @volgaleoni.

The faux pas included: buying a beret in a tourist souvenir shop, going to Le Louvre on a Thursday, using a taxi everywhere and all the time, ordering a cappuccino in a typical French cafe, and taking pictures of the Eiffel Tower with a baguette in Rue de l’Université.

It appears some tourists felt attacked, because they came out swinging in the comments. One American Instagram user from Florida wrote: “We’re bringing a moka pot with us next time, couldn’t get good coffee anywhere. After being in Italy for a week, paris was a real let-down caffeine-wise! We loved the city though. Anyone have recommendations for good coffee or espresso in Paris? Maybe I was just ordering the wrong thing!”

RELATED: The Embarrassing Coffee Mistake Every Tourist Makes In Paris

An Italian fashion desinger who splits their time between Milan and Paris came in with an even more savage take: “Good coffee in Paris just doesn’t exist .”

Another blogger wrote: “I dont like espresso in cafés anywhere other than in Italy france, america, whatever.. I make them myself cause I just can’t.”

Yet another chimed in with: “Some things don’t travel well… espresso is one of them leave it in Italy. In Paris have a hot chocolate w a croissant instead.”

Some other followers discussed why Cappuccinos suck in Paris, suggesting it’s because most French people drink black coffee: “Cappuccino Is extremely expensive in France and bad quality. It’s very touristy, French people drink usually black coffee.”

“Cappuccino in Parisienne typical cafes is impossible to drink. Such a bad quality, bitter taste and too liquid. Plus overpriced.”

One sole Instagram user (at the time of writing) came to Parisian baristas’ defence, writing: “I have did both and i wasn’t disappointed.”

There you have it: a controversial opinion to start your weekend.
