If you consider the fashion world to have been in its prime when women wore gloves and hats and men were dressed as dapper gents at all times, then there’s no doubt you’ll be familiar with the work of renowned fashion photographer Mark Shaw.
This week, a selection of Shaw’s work is coming to Sydney’s Becker Minty store, and will feature portraits of some of the world’s most famous faces including John F. Kennedy and then wife Jackie, Audrey Hepburn, Pablo Picasso, Brigitte Bardot, Yves Saint Laurent, Nico of the Velvet Underground and Coco Chanel.
Mark Shaw was a celebrity and fashion photographer who worked at both Harper’s Bazaar and LIFE magazines, and closely with Dior from 1952 to 1962 where he garnered a reputation for his behind-the-scenes look at the world of haute couture and high society. Shaw’s work has become so coveted that he has become the subject of books and is collected privately by the likes of Ralph Lauren, Tommy Hilfiger, Cindy Crawford, Jennifer Aniston and Martha Stewart.
Shaw’s exhibition in Sydney kicks off on Thursday, August 4 and will be curated by store owner Jason Minty. “Although most of Mark’s images are directed specifically for magazine shoots, there are many that are a little more ‘in the moment’, often giving us a slightly more behind the scenes or more natural look into the chosen celebrity,” says Minty.
Mark Shaw: In The Moment is a must for fashion lovers and culture vultures alike.

When words fail, or we’re simply too lazy to type them, we turn to emoji. The colourful characters have practically become a language of their own, and that language is about to get a bevy of new entries to its dictionary.
Apple have announced that more than 100 new emoji will join the current lineup this fall with the release of iOS 10. In a blog post, the company writes that “this exciting update brings more gender options to existing characters, including new female athletes and professionals, adds beautiful redesigns of popular emoji, a new rainbow flag and more family options.”
Diversity was a clear priority for this batch of emoji. Along with greater representation of women and LGBT characters, iOS 10’s emoji include single-parent families and more people of colour.
The other major change comes to the pistol emoji, which will be replaced by a green water gun. CNN reports that the modification was encouraged by a group called New Yorkers Against Gun Violence, who started an online campaign and wrote an open letter asking Apple to remove the icon “as a symbolic gesture to limit gun accessibility”.
Now you have even more reason to secretly text at your desk instead of working.

I’m sure it comes as no surprise that the world is truly obsessed with sugar. In fact, the 2011-12 Australia Health Survey findings found that on average Australians are consuming far more than the World Heath Organisation’s recommended 10% of dietary energy from free sugars.
What are free sugars, you may ask? Well, according to accredited dietician Kiara Carmody, “Free sugar mostly comes from added sugar in processed products, as well as honey and fruit juice. The most common foods contributing to the higher than recommended sugar intake are ‘discretionary’ food and drinks like soft drinks and energy drinks, fruit and vegetable juice and drinks, cordial, cakes and muffins.”
So, if you’re guilty of tucking into the communal office cookie jar or smashing a Red Bull or two come your 3pm slump, you may be at risk. “The World Health Organisation’s sugar recommendation is set at 10% of energy intake to reduce the risk of diseases associated with high sugar consumption, like obesity, Type 2 Diabetes and heart disease,” says Carmody.
OK, so we know that too much sugar is bad news (no surprises, really), but what would happen if you were to give it up all together? Today’s added sugars are sneaky. In ways that drugs of abuse like nicotine, cocaine and heroin hijack the brain’s reward pathways and make users dependant, increasing evidence suggests that sugar is just as addictive.
According to Prevention, the ‘withdrawal symptoms’ you will experience off sugar are totally dependent on your sugar habit, but research has found that those who have a seriously sweet tooth can show addict-like symptoms including anxiety, restlessness and even depression.
The benefits of at least cutting down on sugar, however, far outweigh the negative side effects. Here are some of the best reasons for doing away with the sweet stuff.
#1 You’ll Keep Your Heart Happy
According to research conducted by a cardiovascular research scientist St. Luke’s Mid-Atlantic Heart Institute in Kansas City, “the predominant sources of sodium in the diet, processed foods, are also generally high in added sugars, the consumption of which might be more strongly and directly associated with hypertension and cardiometabolic risk.” The study found that a reduction in the intake of sugars, would help not only to curb hypertension rates, but might also help address broader problems related to cardiometabolic disease.
#2 Your Skin Will Improve
Struggling with wrinkles or a little adult acne? Well your sugar intake isn’t helping. According to dermatologist and nutritionist Dr. Nicholas Pericone, when you ingest sugar your body breaks down carbohydrates into glucose, which raises your insulin levels. Simple carbohydrates, like refined sugar, white bread and soft drinks, cause your insulin levels to spike, leading to what Dr. Pericone referred to the Huffington Post as “a burst of inflammation throughout the body.” Apparently, inflammation produces enzymes that break down collagen and elastin, resulting in sagging skin and wrinkles. Digested sugar permanently attaches to your collagen through a process called ‘glycation’, which can further exacerbate skin conditions like acne and rosacea.
#3 You’ll Avoid Diabetes
Binging on sugar promotes the buildup of fatty deposits around your liver, contributing to insulin resistance and wrecking the hard work your pancreas is doing. In a study of sugar consumption in 175 nations, Robert Lustig, MD and author of ‘Fat Chance: Beating the Odds Against Sugar, Processed Food, Obesity, and Disease’, found that eating 150 calories of added sugar is 11 times more likely to contribute to the development of type 2 diabetes, compared with 150 calories from protein or fat.
#4 You’ll Stop Feeling Hangry
Apparently, one of the main symptoms of quitting sugar is being cranky, and it’s not much of a surprise considering how addictive the sweet stuff can be. A Columbia University study found that women who eat a diet high in added sugars and refined grains are more likely to experience anxiety, irritability, and mood swings…and we can only imagine it would be much the same for men. Plus, you won’t be feeling so hangry if you’re reaching for handfuls of fruit and vegetables instead of a chocolate bar at lunch time.
#5 You’re Memory Can Improve
On the 6th day of quitting sugar, Fast Company‘s Michael Grothaus said “The fogginess began to disappear along with the lingering headaches. The fruits I were now eating on a daily basis began tasting sweeter. By day 8 or 9, I felt more focused and clear-headed than I had at any time in recent memory.” According to nutritional therapist Rebecca Boulton, Grothaus was experiencing a high because “[His] blood sugars are balanced without the constant roller coaster of sugar highs and lows…which reduces your brain fog and increases mental clarity.”
#6 You’ll Sleep When You’re Supposed To
Did you know that blood sugar issues are said to be the second leading cause of insomnia? By ditching, or cutting down on sugar, particularly before bed, you’ll avoid a rise in blood sugar levels that keep you up all night. You’ll also avoid the sugar crash that ensues. According to Nutrition Secrets, this drop causes the body to release hormones to regulate glucose levels, while also stimulating the brain – something that can easily wake you up. By avoiding this pattern of rising and falling sugar levels, you’ll be sleeping like a baby.
#7 You’ll Lose Weight
It’s an obvious benefit from staying away from sugar, but if you’re looking to shed a few kilos, this could be key. Sugar is void of nutrients and crowds out other nutrient-dense food that your body needs to thrive. It also doesn’t fill you up or satisfy your appetite, leaving you hungrier an hour later. Finally, excess sugar consumption can spike your blood sugar out of the normal healthy range, causing you to feel hungry, have mood swings, store excess fat or end up with Type 2 Diabetes.
So quitting sugar sounds like a pretty sweet deal, right? It’s no easy feat, though. Sugar isn’t just found in obvious culprits like cakes, candy and soft drink. It’s in healthier-sounding staples like salad dressing, pasta sauce and yoghurt, as well. So how can we change our sugar intake and get clued-up on those sugar-coated pantry devils?
“The ideal way to eat healthily would be to follow the Australian Guide to Healthy Eating, which recommends eating mainly from the 5 food groups: grains and cereals, vegetables and legumes, meat, fish and poultry, dairy and fruit, and to have discretionary choices like alcohol, chips, lollies and soft drinks in moderation,” says Carmody. “If a diet is too high in these discretionary choices, it reduces the room for food from the main food groups, which all serve a different purpose to provide essential vitamins, minerals, fibre, carbohydrates, fat and protein.”
Might seem like common sense, but if you’re watching your waistline, it might be a good idea to stray from the sweet-toothed status quo and monitor your sugar intake.

Denim. It’s the very staple thread which has spawned an entire generation of style on its own and today Japan is one of the leading purveyors and producers of this fine product.
Having hailed from the U.S way back in the early 1950s, denim in the land of the rising sun possesses a cult-like status today in which strenuous craftsmanship, passion and patience is heavily invested. It’s not all about the material, vintage machines and techniques though.

Weaving Shibusa is an upcoming film dedicated to the very figures who are credited for shaping an entire nation’s fascination for denim. These stories hail from the country’s most respected denim experts as well as the “Osaka 5”, a group responsible for leading Japan’s denim revival into what it is today.
True to Japanese work ethic, the film also talks to the innovators of denim who’ve lead the charge in making Japanese denim one of the most sought after quality garments in the world.
The film by Devin Leisher, Erik Motta and Medhi Ahmadi will premiere this month and pose the question of where premium denim will go in the future with roots which date back an entire generation.

If you’d like to make all of your childhood dreams come true then listen up, DC Comics fans. The batsuit worn by Christian Bale in Batman is expected to sell for over $100,000 AUD at an upcoming film and television memorabilia sale in the UK.
The batsuit, which appeared in the 2012 film The Dark Knight Rises, isn’t the only thing up for grabs, either. Batman’s Batpod motorcycle and more than 500 original items from other films will be available at the auction, to be held next month.
At the event, organised by Prop Store, you could get your hands on Keira Knightley’s wedding dress from Love Actually, the Sloth Mask from 1985 film The Goonies, Arnold Schwarzenegger’s original Terminator 2 Judgement Day costume, Harry Potter’s Hogwarts acceptance letter and Steven Spielberg’s clapperboard from Jaws.
For a cool $122,025 AUD you could even own a TIE Pilot helmet from Star Wars: A New Hope (1997).
“This year brings an opportunity for film fans and collectors alike to view some of the world’s most iconic film and TV items for free, and bid to secure their own pieces of movie and television history,” said Prop Store chief executive Stephen Lane.
With an original Stormtrooper helmet selling for a whopping $135,971 AUD at the auction last year, you’re best to get in quick this time around, or at least check out the full scope of what’s on offer when the auction’s items go on display to the public at a free exhibition at the BFI IMAX in central London from September 14 until sale day on September 27.

Kanye West is no stranger to controversy, in fact, it seems like these days the rapper almost goes out of his way to make headlines, and his latest stint on the soapbox was no exception.
Calling into Annie Mac’s BBC Radio 1 show earlier today, West discussed a multitude of topics, most notably how he’d like to work with IKEA and run for president, but also issues around police violence and his 2015 Glastonbury headlining performance. He even mentioned plans for an affordable adidas shoe, costing fans no more than $30 USD.
“I’m going to adidas, and I’m like, ‘adidas I know you’ve never made a shoe under $50, but we have to make a shoe that costs $30 USD…it would be the coolest shoe of all,” he said.
As far as IKEA goes, West paid a visit to the furniture brand’s Swedish HQ earlier in the year, sparking his interest. “I have to work with IKEA – make furniture for interior design, for architecture,” he said. “Yo Ikea, allow Kanye to create, allow him to make his thing because you know what, I want a bed that he makes, I want a chair that he makes.” Good to see Kanye has a healthy amount of self-esteem.
If you’re wondering about Kanye West’s plans to run for presidency, here’s what he also had to say to Annie Mac. “When I talk about the idea of being president, I’m not saying I have any political views. I just have a view on humanity, on people, on truth. We are numb, we’re number to 500 kids getting killed in Chicago a year, we’re number to the fact that it was seven police shootings in the beginning of July. If there is anything that I can do with my time and my day, to somehow make a difference while I’m alive I’m going to try to do it.”
Who knows where Kanye will end up next.

Most actors enter a mid-year life cycle where they decide to join a political party or back an obscure startup. Not Matthew McConaughey. The 46-year-old Magic Mike actor has just signed on as the creative director of Wild Turkey bourbon.
Hoping to be far more than just a face to the brand, McConaughey was keen to partake in the art of traditional American bourbon making in order to mark his own influence and take on the drink. Proving his dedication to the new role was simple enough with McConaughey dropping by Wild Turkey’s headquarters in Kentucky to find out how every bottle is made as well as the faces behind the brand.
His new job will utilise his acting chops perfectly as “a storyteller for Wild Turkey behind the camera and in front of it,” according to a press release.

Furthermore, McConaughey will also direct and write a series of television and digital ad campaigns for the drink maker. Whether you’re a fan of American bourbon or not, it’s still intriguing to see where McConaughey can take the Wild Turkey name into the future. More blends? Exclusive small batches? A more up-market appeal? The bourbon world will just have to wait and see what ideas come to fruition.
“I told them, ‘I don’t want to be just a face. I have ideas. I’m an idea man,’” McConaughey said in a New York Times interview of his latest gig.

Australia is home to plenty of sporting greats, but in the game of paying bills on time, we’re coming last by a mile.
A recent study conducted by UK software firm MarketInvoice revealed that Australian businesses ranked on the bottom of a list of countries including the US, Japan, Germany, Canada and Ireland, for paying invoices, with an average of 26.4 overdue.
After digging a little deeper, finance company Square found that WA businesses are the worst offenders, waiting an average of 4.5 days to pay overdue bills, while ACT customers and businesses are the quickest, paying up to 3.3 days early.
When it comes to the types of businesses most lazy on paying invoices, bars, clubs and lounges are the worst, waiting an average of 7.4 days to pay late, followed by contractors, professional services, and creatives. No surprise, really, that the fastest to pay are accountants, followed by jewellery retailers and home goods retailers.

It’s nearly that time of year again: the season when Apple devotees chuck their perfectly good phones in the bin in favour of newer, more expensive versions with minimal actual improvements. Evan Blass, a tech reporter for VentureBeat and provider of reliable leaks, claims to know the exact iPhone 7 release date.
Blass set off a frenzy when he tweeted that the release would happen the week of September 12. Looking at Apple’s release history, Blass then extrapolated the most likely dates for iPhone 7 milestones. He predicts that pre-orders will begin on September 9 with the release following on Friday, September 16 (previous iterations of the phone have also released on Fridays). Taken together, those two dates mean the iPhone 7 will most likely be announced on September 7.
According to Fortune, Blass’ timeline aligns with Apple’s historical September release schedule. The company “likes to hold special press events after Labor Day in September to unveil its new iPhone,” writes Fortune, and “usually announces a new iPhone towards the beginning of a week, starts preorders on a Friday, and launches the iPhone a week after preorders begin.”
Blass didn’t reveal his sources, and as with any Apple rumour, the claim should be taken with a grain of salt until the secretive company offers official confirmation. So far there have been no real confirmations about the phone from the Cupertino tech giant, but gossip predicts a dual camera and the disappearance of the traditional headphone jack.
