Think of Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson and you’ll likely conjure up images of a man with muscles larger than any you’ve seen before, teeth that are brighter than the sun, and a perfectly polished bald head. But the 49-year-old hasn’t always looked like that.
RELATED: The Rock’s Scarring Fitness Lesson Every Man Can Learn From
True fans of the Hollywood megastar will know him from his wrestling years. He joined WWF – The World Wrestling Federation – in 1996, during which time he perfected his smouldering look and charismatic attitude. He continued wrestling and making occasional appearances all the way up until 2019.
And, it was actually on this day (in the USA at time of writing) 17 November 1996 that he made his WWF (later known as WWE) debut, and it’s safe to say, he looked different. The Rock entered the ring for the first time in 1996 as Rocky Maiva. He took the name from a combination of his father and grandfather’s wrestling names – The Rock was born into the Samoan Anoa’i family, a whole family of professional wrestlers – and actually had very little wrestling experience when he started.
However, due to his lineage, the producers behind WWF were keen to promote him, and he won his first match at Survivor Series on 17 November. The following year, in 1997, he began referring to himself as The Rock, in third-person.
As the ESPN Instagram account (see photo above) shows, The Rock hasn’t always been chiselled abs and arms larger than your head. While he was certainly not a skinny guy, the image in question shows his muscles haven’t always been so defined. He used to have hair, too, with his debut look being a perm, of all things.
We could also talk about his wrestling attire, but the less said about that, the better. He was new to the scene and had yet to develop a concrete character. Once he dropped the Rocky Maiva name and came to be known as The Rock, he changed his appearance in the process, donning a pair of black budgie smugglers, cutting his hair and he started to become noticeably more ripped.
It’s not just us that are a little taken aback by the unearthed image, as several comments on the ESPN post show others are just as shocked:
“All that damn hair”
“Back when he was semi-athletic (aerial style, not grounded)..”
“This look like somebody dressed up as the rock for Halloween”
And, referencing the fact fellow Hollywood actor Kevin Hart previously dressed up as an iconic image of The Rock wearing a black turtleneck sweater, jeans and a gold chain, another user added:
“Welp, @therockbet you can guess what @kevinhart4real is gonna be for Halloween ‘22″
Since hitting Hollywood stardom, The Rock has become a man of serious style and paving the way for big and tall guys to take an interest in fashion style too. It’s no wonder he’s become one of the most likeable people in the world.

A controversial economy travel hack has once again surfaced online. The last time the hack made headlines it got some entitled pointy end passengers furious. One even went online to complain about economy passengers “invading” their precious premium space.
The hack? Watch the video below and find out.
The hack we are speaking of is the second hack in the above video, by flight attendant @katkamalani, who this morning took to TikTok to share three travel hacks that will make your economy flight more comfortable.
“Change the way you travel,” Kat captioned the video. In the video she describes how female passengers can check “secret compartments” in the lavatory for sanitary napkins. She then gets on to travel hack number two – the subject of this article.
“Everyone thinks you can’t use the first-class bathroom but you totally can. As long as you’re not standing in the galley you’re free to use their lavatory.”
The third and final hack is never to accept an airline’s first offer when they’re trying to buy you off an oversold flight. Why? Because you can usually get more.
Kat’s video was only posted half an hour ago, so it has yet to attract many comments. However, judging by the complaints we’ve previously heard (on other platforms and on other threads/forums) about economy passengers using business class or first-class bathrooms previously, we imagine it’s only a matter of time.
To give you a taster, one aggrieved Australian business class passenger (with the username Gjspectre) took to a community thread with the following complaint in 2019: “Of late on 737 business class flights there has been an increasing number of economy passengers strolling through business class and using the toilet.”
Just as an aside – in Australia, our domestic business class is more or less equivalent to America’s domestic first class (or at least it used to be before airlines started making cutbacks, though that’s a story for another time).
“On my last flight to Adelaide a clearly drunk passenger did this three times, with absolutely no resistance from the crew.”
He then added, “I’m not particularly fussed [but] perhaps their announcement at the start isn’t enough? I’ve commented before that Virgin Australia with their white rope deters this effectively.”
Some other users in the thread came to Gjspectre’s defence. One wrote: “Get them back where they paid for I say. Qantas doesn’t have single class service aircraft. They charge extra for convenience and people pay for it with points and/or money. I really don’t see the argument its ok.”
“It’s like the apologists for Qantas who pay 16K for Qantas First and blindly accept their business class unsophisticated F product which does not equate the to super premium fare paid.”
“Even worse,” another added, “is when they queue in the aisle waiting to use the toilet.”
“It’s something the staff could easily address and tell them to go down the back.”
Another wrote: “My observation has been some keen observers wait until the cabin crew are busy or absent upfront and then make their move. Personally, while I do sit in business class regularly on the 737, it’s not something that bothers me.”
“It is a toilet,” another wrote. “But one positive of flying business, is it being less likely to have to wait or queue to visit the loo (Particularly on longer flights). Plus having less disturbance via foot traffic. Not the biggest deal in the world of course, but something which may annoy an airlines premium passengers.”
“Australian culture is generally egalitarian in nature and understand some of the responses here. However, QF could quickly resolve the discontent and grumbling by either delivering on the implied promise or not making the promise at all. Rules are rules and if the crew are ignoring them, that’s not really acceptable.”
In other places around the internet, however, Kat’s point that economy passengers are usually allowed to use the business/first class bathroom (in a pinch), seems to be upheld (though this, in the end, comes down to which airline you are flying, and the discretion of their staff).
The economy travel hack has been discussed in various forums by people from all around the world, with business and first-class passengers everywhere from Australia to Canada expressing their irritation with economy passengers exploiting this grey area (and economy passengers pointing out that people overly exploiting this loophole means that when those that really need to use it try to use it, they might find it shut).
One user in forum travel.stackexchange.com complained their grandmother had been chided by Air Canada staff for using the first class bathroom, when the economy one was dirty and there was a long wait for it, and said that this was really not cool.
On the other hand, a Quora thread pointed out that keeping a divide in some circumstances is completely understandable, saying economy passengers on international flights on premium airlines like Emirates can hardly be expected to gain access to first-class bathrooms, which are furnished with such expensive luxuries as showers, without having paid for it.

Forbes, however, reported in 2019 (in a context of domestic flights), “First class bathrooms are for all passengers (mostly).”
Forbes reported: “According to their representatives, American Airlines, JetBlue (Mint-class flights), and United do not have any lavatory class restrictions on U.S. domestic flights. Alaska Airlines is a bit stricter, stating, ‘When possible, we ask that guests use the lav [lavatory] in the cabin there are seated in.’ And for the world’s second-largest carrier, Delta, their policy states that, ‘While customers should use the lav in their cabin of service, our crew leverages situational flexibility to support special accommodations as needed.'”
In other words, they’d prefer it if you used the toilet of the class you paid for, but if there’s a big queue, going to the toilet is kind of a human right.
RELATED: Woman’s ‘Gross’ In-Flight Act Sparks Massive Etiquette Debate
Forbes added: “So, why do flight attendants, even if using their own discretion, enforce lavatory class restrictions? For one, there are security concerns, such as a congregation of passengers forming near the cockpit door, which is especially problematic if a pilot wishes to exit.”
“Second, the policy encourages passengers to use the mid or rear lavatories to prevent interruption to food and beverage service, which often starts at the forward area of the aircraft and is ongoing during the flight for the first-class cabin.”
“Third, there’s also a concern for the convenience of first-class passengers, who are generally airline loyalists or paid a premium for their seats, and thus are extra important to the airline’s bottom line. But while there are valid reasons for class restrictions, their fairness is questioned when coach lavatories are unavailable.”
There you have it: a sneaky travel hack. Use the information wisely.

Maybe it’s because we’ve all been starved of air travel over the last twelve months – or perhaps we’re nostalgic for a simpler time – but there’s been a real retro chronograph revival in 2021, especially pilot’s chronographs.
Naturally, Breitling’s been at the forefront of this trend. The Swiss watchmaker has a long history of not only making precision chronographs but also is a brand inextricably linked to the world of aviation – so it’s no surprise that they were going to get in on the retro chrono action. What has been surprising is how productive Breitling’s been in 2021, blessing us with a boatload (or should that be a plane-load?) of truly tasty retro-inspired releases this year.
First, we had the launch of the new Premier Heritage collection, which pays homage to the intrepid designs and aesthetics of the 1940s. Then we saw the overhaul of the famous Chronomat with the new Super Chronomat collection, which is a modern update of the rugged 80s pilot’s watch. Most recently, we’ve seen the Top Time pay homage to three of the most iconic American muscle cars of all time… And now, Breitling’s doing something similar with flying machines.
The new Super AVI collection, positioned as the first series within a new, broader Classic AVI collection, is a celebration of four of the most iconic planes of the 20th century: the North American Aviation P-51 Mustang, the Vought F4U Corsair, the Curtiss P-40 Warhawk, and the de Havilland Mosquito. It also celebrates one of Breitling’s most legendary pilot’s watches, the 1953 “Co-Pilot” ref. 765 AVI, taking that classic design and bringing it into the 21st century with some serious mechanical innovations.

Firstly, let’s talk about the case size: 46mm. That’s admittedly pretty hefty, but it’s in line with the modern preference towards larger watches. It’s also a practical size, as it aids in legibility when you’re up in the air.
Indeed, many of the watch’s best and most distinctive features are all in the name of mid-flight ergonomics. Its oversized crown, nicely knurled bezel and hardy chronograph pushers are designed to be easy to use even when wearing thick flying gloves. Large, clear and incredibly luminescent Arabic numerals make it easy to tell time at a glance, so you don’t have to take your eyes off the skies.
Most impressively, it’s not just a chronograph but a GMT watch: a complication literally designed for pilots. It’s easy to keep track of a second time zone using the 24-hour marking on the inner bezel and the red-tipped GMT hand. An elegantly integrated date window at 6 o’clock is another clever and characteristically Breitling touch.
That’s all thanks to the COSC-certified Breitling Manufacture Caliber B04 movement under the Super AVI’s hood. Water-resistant to 100m with a 70-hour power reserve, it’s a workhorse movement that makes it worlds better than the 1953 ref. 765 AVI the watch was inspired by.

The five watches all feature colour schemes that reflect the iconic colour schemes of the aircraft they’re inspired by, with the P-51 Mustang (arguably the most legendary plane of WWII) the focus of two watches: one in stainless steel with a black dial, and one in red gold with an anthracite dial.

Finally, all five models feature silhouettes of their namesake plane adorning their sapphire case backs, as well as hardy retro-inspired leather straps – with that famous yellow Breitling backing. In short, it’s one handsome formation of flight-ready retro chronographs that stand out as an exemplary release, even in this particularly stacked year for these types of watches.
“Our watchmaking DNA is what dominates here, while the interpretations of the four aircraft give the series its emotion and bold graphic appeal. Taken together, these elements evoke the spirit of early flight,” Breitling Creative Director Sylvain Berneron relates. He continues:
“We can’t forget that Breitling pioneered aviation tool watches like the Ref. 765 AVI. That heritage is so strong, we had to not only keep it intact, but rewrite it for the 21st century.”
In that sense, we think they nailed the mission brief. We also can’t wait to see what else the Classic AVI collection has in store for us in 2022…

2021 has been one of the most exciting years for Australian luxury watch fans, with the last twelve months being jam-packed with all sorts of cool new releases and collaborations.
One of the most exciting of these has been the Kennedy + Martin Collaboration. This campaign – crafted by Kennedy, Australia’s leading luxury watch retailer with Australian rules football legend Dustin Martin – has been a breath of fresh air for Australian watch fans. It’s a brilliant piece of horological storytelling that reflects how watches are such a powerful way to express different elements of one’s personality.
Now, Kennedy is building upon the success of this collaboration by partnering with famed Swiss watch manufacturer IWC Schaffhausen to create a first-of-a-kind timepiece, which not only celebrates Dustin Martin’s career in a way that few other Australian sportspeople have ever been honoured by but also supports a truly worthy cause.
The ref. IW501904 sees IWC’s iconic tool watch emblazoned in Richmond’s club colours: a black ceramic case and black dial offset by striking yellow hands and indices; a never-before-attempted colour combination by IWC. It also features a titanium case back with unique engraving referencing the Kennedy + Martin Collection, further highlighting the uniqueness of the piece.

One lucky Tiger fanatic or watch collector will be able to claim the first-of-a-kind timepiece for their own following a successful bid at a VIP event hosted by Kennedy, where the timepiece will be auctioned to raise money for the Australian Childhood Foundation, which helps provide vital counselling, support and care to vulnerable children who have experienced trauma, abuse or neglect. Bidding is open to the public leading up to the event via the following link – www.kennedy.com.au/iwc-watch-auction.
“The Australian Childhood Foundation is a leader in advocacy for children who have experienced or are experiencing the trauma of violence and abuse. As a community, they need our help,” Kennedy Executive Chairman James Kennedy shares.
“Thanks to the generous contributions like that of the Kennedy + Martin campaign, we are able to ensure that children who need us can access the very special support they require in order to begin healing,’’ Australian Childhood Foundation’s CEO Dr Joe Tucci relates.
That an Australian retailer and sportsman is receiving such a special and unique horological collaboration would be cause for celebration in itself – these sorts of first-of-a-kind watches are, naturally, incredibly uncommon. That it has been created for such a good cause is simply icing on the cake.
The stunning watch will be available at Kennedy’s IWC boutique on Collins St, Melbourne prior to the public silent auction which starts on 17th November 2021. For more details on the auction head to Kennedy’s online boutique here.

John Legend’s watch collection is so huge he probably forgets how many watches he has.
The 42-year-old singer, multi-instrumentalist, and EGOT (i.e. an Emmy, Grammy, Oscar and Tony winner) is one of the most dedicated celebrity watch collectors on the scene, with the crooner owning pieces from brands as diverse as Bulgari, Montblanc, OMEGA and Rolex, just to name a few.
But the one brand he loves more than any other is Audemars Piguet. The prestigious ‘Holy Trinity‘ watchmaker is a favourite among celebrities thanks to its iconic sports watch, the Royal Oak. Indeed, the Royal Oak is such a successful and prolific watch that it’s easy to forget that AP actually make other watches.
That’s what it was such a pleasant surprise to see Legend rock a rare, discontinued, non-Royal Oak AP on NBC’s The Voice last night: a Jules Audemars Tourbillon Chronograph (ref. 26346OR.OO.D088CR.01) that’s proof positive that AP is no one-trick pony.

The Jules Audemars collection mostly contains AP’s most sober, least flashy dress watches – but this complicated chronograph is a real exception. Featuring an openworked (that’s AP for skeletonised) movement with a huge tourbillon mounted at 6 o’clock, it’s a unique blend of old-fashioned horology and high-tech watchmaking.

It’s also a pretty expensive piece of wrist candy. Crafted from 18ct rose gold and currently out of production, prices start at around AU$200,000. We reckon Legend probably bought it a few years ago when it was new but just hasn’t worn it since then. Imagine that.
Of course, Legend isn’t just one of AP’s best customers. He actually had a little-known signature model, the Millenary Pianoforte John Legend (which featured a highly appropriate piano key motif), which hit the market back in 2009. Naturally, he also owns a couple of Royal Oaks, too.
Check out some of the other highlights from John Legend’s impressive watch collection below.

Airbus has given aviation enthusiasts a red hot glimpse at Acropolis’ epic ACJ320neo. It’s quite the sight. From spacious interiors (96 square metres of floor space) to showers, workspaces, dining spaces and full-on beds, it really is a must-see piece of engineering (not to mention, one of the private jets with one of the largest cabins in the world).
Airbus uploaded the above photos (check out our video montage of Airbus’ photos in the clip above) to Instagram on Tuesday, giving followers a glimpse into day 3 of this year’s Dubai Airshow.
The photos show off the elegant and spacious interior of the Acropolis ACJ320neo – an aircraft that features a delectable blend of furniture, materials, fittings and mood lighting which Acropolis Aviation claims: “evokes a sense of wellbeing” and “sets a new standard in terms of luxury, quality and comfort.”
The company also explains, on its website, that the ACJ320neo allows you to: “Stay connected inflight through [its] 19 individual iPads and four large TV screens in the cabin.”
Talk about a plane you could (basically) live in.
Acropolis Aviation adds: “The ACJ320neo redefines large cabin corporate jet standards… The spaces onboard include an open-plan forward lounge and an intimate rear lounge, separated by a mid-cabin conference/dining area.”
“At the rear of the aircraft is a private master bedroom with a king-size bed, as well as a luxurious en-suite bathroom featuring a large rectangular shower. The perfect space for 19 passengers to move about the cabin freely, arriving refreshed and relaxed at their destination.”
If that wasn’t enough, “A full galley enables our cabin crew to offer freshly prepared meals in flight,” the company adds of its own aircraft. “Whether you prefer an intimate dinner or want to entertain guests with a banquet-style meal, our menus guarantee that only the finest locally sourced ingredients are used.”

According to Airbus: “The ACJneo Family is up to four times the cabin size of traditional high-end business jets, with a similar external length and wingspan.”
Talk about plenty of room to spread out.

After spending the best part of two years mostly eating at home, it’s been a revelation being able to go and eat out again. We’ve missed our local greasy spoons, high-end restaurants and everything in between. What we haven’t missed, however, is the sticker shock that often comes with dining out.
You know what we mean. $20 for a cheeseburger. $5 for a can of Coca-Cola. That’s to say nothing of the long waiting times and questionable service you often receive when getting grub from a food truck or supposedly upmarket fast food joint. And it’s the same everywhere – it’s almost like there’s an international conspiracy…
One post on Reddit’s /r/funny, pointing out some common traits shared by expensive burger restaurants, has hit a nerve with the disgruntled diners of the world, receiving viral praise. Simply titled “You know when the burger will be way too expensive…”, the meme really hits the nail on the head – and it’s not just burger places where this rings true.

It’s so true though – it’s always some hipster dude with an undercut, tattoo sleeves and nitrile gloves who’s making those overpriced burgers and taking forever to get your order out. While the original poster was from Europe, it seems as if this is a common thing around the globe, according to the comments. As one Redditor put it:
“The funny thing is, it looks like that this is universal. I live in Brazil and this stereotype applies perfectly, from burgers to beers and barbershops.”
RELATED: Australian Man Tries To Sell Post Lockdown Restaurant Reservation For Outrageous Sum
Another insight from the comments was how food trucks (who are normally staffed by these Black Glove Bandits) seem to be particularly guilty of bad behaviour.
“F*cking HATE food trucks. Yesss please let me pay $16 for a meal that WILL leave me hungry because it’s f*cking tiny and I waited for 30min even though I am the only customer, from a kitchen on wheels with questionable hygiene at best, with no bathrooms or ways to wash my hands before or after I had to eat with my hands, [then suggesting] a 20% tip, apparently for me walking up to the window, placing my order and then picking it up myself,” one American commenter complained. Say what you really feel.

Also, what’s with the obsession with 90s hip-hop, particularly The Notorious B.I.G.? There are so many fast food places either named after Biggie or have something on the menu named after him, like a ‘Big Poppa’ burger. Or something. We hope the White family’s getting royalties…
That said, we don’t want to rag on restaurants too much. The only thing worse than an overpriced restaurant is some influencer with an over-inflated ego trying to scam free meals. Check out this Australian restauranter’s brilliant comeback to a rude influencer trying to get #couscousforcomment.

Zlatan Ibrahimovic, the world’s most humble footballer, isn’t known for his restraint.
The 40-year-old Bosnian-Swedish star, who’s currently enjoying somewhat of a renaissance at AC Milan, loves gifting himself lavish gifts. Typically he likes to buy himself fancy sports cars (like his Ferrari Monza, Lamborghini Urus or Porsche 911 Targa 4S Heritage Design Edition) but it seems this time he’s decided to go all-out on a watch.
Zlatan was spotted at the tennis ATP Finals in Turin, Italy hanging out with another Yugoslavian sporting legend – Serbian world No. 1 Novak Djokovic – wearing a ridiculously flashy Rolex Daytona Rainbow (ref. 116595RBOW) which easily upstaged Novak’s new Hublot.
This is why you never take on Zlatan.

You’d be forgiven for thinking that this bedazzled timepiece is some sort of custom, third-party job – but nope, this is an official Rolex creation. Released back in 2018 but since discontinued, this luxurious take on Rolex’s most desirable watch features 56 brilliant-cut diamonds set into its lugs and crown guards; 36 coloured baguette-cut sapphires in place of the normal tachymeter scale on its bezel, and an additional 11 sapphires instead of hour markers.
If that wasn’t excessive enough for you, the bezel and hour markers are set in a rainbow gradation – subtly going through all the colours of the rainbow – plus the case and bracelet of the watch are made out of Rolex’s exclusive 18ct pink gold alloy, Everose. The amount of craftsmanship to create a pice like this is truly impressive, as is its price tag: well in excess of US$350,000.

Zlatan’s got more than just his recent prowess on the football pitch to celebrate, too. I Am Zlatan, a dramatic new biographical film chronicalling the young Swede’s journey from the rough side of Malmö to international sporting stardom, is starting to hit cinemas around the world. Check out the (Italian) trailer for the film here.

Maya Bay – the iconic Phi Phi Island bay from the 2000 movie The Beach – has re-opened after three years of being closed to visitors. Maya Bay is a picturesque cove protected by 100-metre cliffs on three sides.
Most beaches in the bay are small and some are only visible at low tide. The predominant beach is about 200 metres long. The Bay is famous for its impossibly fine white sand, coral reef, colourful fish and glass-clear water. It is located in the Phi Phi islands – an archipelago of six islands between the large island of Phuket and the Straits of Malacca coast of Thailand (watch the video above, with features clips by TikTok creators @maiseyclairebailey and @riotravellers, to get a sense for the place).
Maya Bay has become the main tourist drawcard of the Phi Phi Islands since The Beach, which starred Leonardo DiCaprio, was filmed there in 1999. Its popularity eventually became its downfall, however, with overtourism spoiling the beautiful bay with pollution and overcrowding (it was reportedly receiving about 5,000 visitors a day on average in 2018). The coral was also being decimated.
Because of this, it was closed to tourists three years ago, to give the natural environment time to recover. Now it is opening up again, in a more sustainable way.
Thailand’s Department of National Parks has released a statement saying Maya Bay will reopen to tourists on January the 1st, 2022.
There’s a catch though – you can’t just turn up anymore.
CNN Travel reports: “The reopening comes with several caveats. Boats will not be able to enter the bay. Instead, drivers will have to drop passengers off at a pier set at the back of the island away from the famed cove. Only eight speedboats will be allowed to dock there at a time, and visits will be capped at one hour, with a maximum of 300 tourists allowed per round, from 10 a.m.-4p.m daily.”
From now until January the 1st, boats are allowed to enter the outer limits of Maya Bay, but its shores are a no go zone, (you can look at the beach from your boat, and snorkel in designated zones).
Thailand recently (on November the 1st) loosened its quarantine rules for travellers who have stayed at least 21 days in one of 63 approved “low risk” countries and territories – including Australia, the United States, the United Kingdom, India and Canada.
CNN Travel reports: “Incoming fliers who meet the updated requirements only need to stay one night in a government-approved hotel while they await the results of a Covid-19 test administered upon arrival. Tourists who aren’t fully vaccinated with an approved vaccine must quarantine in a pre-booked, government-approved hotel for 10 days upon arrival.”
For Australians, a recent article by Traveller recommends the following (in terms of visiting Thailand): “As an Australian, and provided you’re fully vaccinated and you’ve not been outside the country in the 21 days before arrival in Thailand, you’re entitled to enter Thailand under the Exemption from Quarantine program. Ignore the Sandbox and Alternative Quarantine programs, both are more restrictive.”
