Have you ever bought anything that has increased exponentially in value? No? Well, perhaps it’s time to reconsider your spending habits… or live vicariously through Antiques Roadshow.During a recent episode, a U.S Air Force veteran brought out a watch he purchased more than four decades ago. The watch – a 1971 Rolex Cosmograph Daytona Oyster – cost him $345.97 (nearly a month’s salary, for him, at the time) when he ordered it through the exchange store on the military base where he was staying in 1974.While the watch was originally intended for scuba diving, after buying it, the veteran decided it was “too nice to take down in the salty water.’” As he told Peter Planes of Luxe Auctioneers, on the Antiques Roadshow episode, “I just kept it.”He then put it in a safety deposit box where it sat – unworn – for years. And it could now be worth a jaw-wrenching sum: after being stationed in Thailand from 1973 to 1975, the veteran then returned home, keeping the watch in the box.Fortunately for the resale value, the veteran also put the original case, as well as accompanying documents like the sales receipt, his warranty paper and the original brochure, in the safety deposit box.
“I only took it out like two or three times to look at it, and that was about the extent of it before I brought it here.”
He then, during the Antiques Roadshow episode, in Fargo, North Dakota last July, was told it had become especially valuable as these kinds of watches are highly sought after due to their association with the late actor Paul Newman, who wore a Rolex Daytona in the 1969 racing movie “Winning.”This type of watch has now been dubbed the “Paul Newman” Daytona (as an aside, and as CNBC reported yesterday, in 2017, the Rolex Daytona that Newman wore and owned for years sold at auction for $17.8 million). But back to the watch at hand: Planes told the veteran the types of watches Newman wore in the film typically sell at auction for up to $200,000. The veteran’s watch, however, is actually worth a lot more, as it is an “extremely rare” variety with screw-down buttons that make it more water-resistant than other types.“You’ve gotta be kidding me,” the veteran said, falling to the floor in mock shock. But the big news was still to come.Though other screw-down watches like this are worth around $400,000 at auction, the veteran’s is actually worth anywhere from $500,000 to $700,000, given the condition it is in and the abundance of documentation.
“This may be one of the very few in the whole world that was never worn.”
“It’s one of the rarest Paul Newman models,” Planes said, “In this condition I don’t think there’s a better one in the world. He then thanked the veteran for his service to his country, and for “bringing me one of the greatest watches” to ever appear on Antiques Roadshow. As the top comment on the Youtube version of the episode puts it: “Someone’s retirement just got a lot more comfortable.”

Delta is set to introduce a first-class seat that is lightweight, comfortable and classy. The only problem? Its space-saving design is reflective of a changing premium cabin industry, in which first-class is rarer and rarer (and when new first-class products are introduced, they look more and more like business-class).While over in the states (domestically) there is no such thing as business-class (it’s just first and economy), Delta’s new (domestic) first-class signals a change in attitude we are seeing more and more internationally too.Anyway, as PAXEX.AERO reported on Monday, the changes will be introduced as Delta brings Airbus A321neos into its fleet (it’s still unclear whether older jets will be retrofitted with this new design).
A swanky new first class seat will be flying soon on some @Delta flights. What do you think of the design (produced in partnership with @recaro_as and @FactorydesignUK)?? https://t.co/qnM2gcBl9o#PaxEx #A321neo $DAL pic.twitter.com/vN0pbZ2MxC
— Seth Miller (@WandrMe) January 27, 2020
PAXEX.AERO said the seats were designed based on passenger feedback, in partnership with the aviation design firms Factory Design and Recaro, and will boast “better privacy, more space and other benefits.”These benefits include increased privacy, a larger tray table (including 25% more workspace), an increase in storage, a power port that faces the customer and memory foam cushioning.“Also key to the A321neo seats will be the in-house Delta Flight Products inflight entertainment system,” PAXEX.AERO reported. “The embedded in-seat screens are fed by a wireless data connection rather than cabling, helping to reduce aircraft weight and ease some installation and certification complexities.”This plays into a broader trend of first-class becoming less about jaw-dropping luxury and more about maximising space. As The Economist puts it: “Executives are flying business class; plutocrats are taking private jets.” So airlines need to either get rid of their first-class offerings, or streamline them.
“Many analysts predict that first class will soon disappear. In America it is already almost extinct…Ten or so years ago almost all the many hundreds of long-haul aircraft based there offered first-class seating; now only about 20 do,” (The Economist).
Even though this first-class offering from Delta is domestic, not international (and so you wouldn’t expect it to measure up to The Residence and co.), a glance around the major international carriers’ diminishing first-class offerings and space-maximising business and premium economy offerings goes to show: times are changing.

Forget his Golden Globe or even his Emmy… Matt Bomer was just spotted wearing an outfit that deserves a prize all of its own as he left ABC’s “Live” with Kelly and Ryan earlier this year on January 28th in New York City. The 42-year-old American actor, producer, director and singer has appeared on the show several times in the past, wearing different outfits and talking about distinct roles. Yesterday, however, Matt sat down to talk to Kelly and Ryan to talk about season three of the series The Sinner. But the upcoming season of the renewed detective drama, which Matt recently joined as the new lead, is not what’s important here: the all brown outfit Matt chose to wear as he exited the studio is.Stepping out on a sunny New York winter’s day, Matt wore a cashmere turtleneck, a chestnut brown blazer and trousers, black oval glasses and brown dress shoes.Yes: the American Horror Story star looks like he just stepped out of a Suitsupply catalogue. But it’s super cool, and an excellent example of how you can buck the trend and stand out from the sea of navy and grey penguins at the office, all by wearing a brown suit. Not every man can rock one, but Bomer clearly can.Bradley Cooper, watch out – Matt Bomer is coming to take your crown as the coolest cocoa-coloured suit wearer around. So, even though brown suits haven’t been all the rage since the pre-industrial era, if you do it right, you can net yourself bonus points for being original with a touch of old school charm. Not sure where to start? Our men’s fashion guides have everything you need to know (and more).Monotone success awaits.

Nice guys finish last. It’s an old saying which has been debated over for way too long so we’ve hit up our resident dating expert, Chris Manak of Manic Workshops, for advice on what to do if you’re just a nice guy who cant win in life and love.Buckle up and pay attention, bubble boy.
The Nice & Ugly Truth
Nice Guys Always Finish Last. Attributing a man’s lack of success with women to him being nice is like blaming fire fighters for a blaze, simply because they are at the scene of the crime. ‘Niceness’ is present along with other traits, and it’s more these other traits, in my humble opinion, which are the real cause of the lack of success in the dating world.
Think Of The Nice Guy For A Moment…
No, don’t think of some nice person that you know who happens to be male, think of that cliché nice guy, i.e. the guy most often at the centre of this eternal conundrum of the dating chestnut: “He’s nice, but…”Let’s break down the nice guy for a moment. Typically, he is the type that:
- He won’t ever disagree with a woman of interest, regardless of whatever waffle she may be talking about
- He definitely wouldn’t tease her and give her the same shit that her actual friends would
- He will not call her out on her bullshit, even if she is being dramatic
- He most definitely wouldn’t mention other women of interest in his life (likely because there are none)
The end result is somewhat of a shell of a person. An accommodating ‘yes-man’ with no depth, no excitement, no charm, no life of his own. There is no tension, no sexual excitement. I’m certainly not hating on the nice guy, as above all, I know that it’s about one thing – self-worth.Deep down, the nice guy just doesn’t feel he is worthy of the girl. She is more attractive than him, more popular than him; he couldn’t possibly offer her anything from his place of low value (at least in his mind). His vibe, actions and attitude are basically all saying one thing – that she is better than him. So, he accommodates her, leading her to label him an “incredibly nice guy”, the sentence inevitably being followed with “but …”
What She Doesn’t Want
She doesn’t want someone to agree with everything that she is saying; she wants to have a conversation with someone with a mind of his own.She doesn’t want someone to be at her beck and call; like so many of us, she just wants a laugh, even if it’s at herself. She doesn’t want some desperate guy falling in love with her at the drop of a hat; she wants a man who is going about his way in life, a leader who is inviting her along for the ride. The case for so many nice guys is that they’re living in scarcity, so they cling to the first glimmer of hope. And they’re simply, too agreeable. Some would debate that this is more manipulative than their bad boy counterparts, since they’re not being real or honest. Women can become objects of the nice guy’s pedestaling, and ultimately feel obligated to be as nice and accommodating, to tread lightly and to deliver her information selectively so as to not offend or hurt her buddy (whom she very much knows has a thing for her). She does not want a guy, friend or otherwise, that she has to worry about hurting with every small decision that she makes.Ultimately – the nice guy is just not very exciting to be around.
Entitlement: The Bane Of Nice Guys
How often do you see a guy complaining about women only wanting bad boys, arseholes, jerks, and not him? After all – he is a nice guy! “What is wrong with them?” he might ask. When a man reaches this point, he can pretty much bid farewell to any shred of female respect that he may have had left.Women are not repelled because he is a nice; they are repelled because his neediness is overshadowing EVERYTHING else. It tells her in no uncertain terms “I am a pussy, and rather than grow and develop into a better, stronger version of myself, I want the world to bend to my pussy ways”This is the single biggest thing that stops so many ‘nice’ guys from getting much interest from women.
A Nice Take Home Message
It’s NOT the trait of being nice that is keeping the women away from the typical nice guy, it’s what’s going on underneath. It’s his lack of self-worth, his scarcity, and/or his entitlement.Millions of nice guys the world over are dating fantastic women, however they differ from our cliché nice chap by valuing themselves, by pursuing their lives, by having a backbone, by having perspective and by being real and honest with the women in their lives. They do not pedestal women; instead, simply treat them like the human beings that they are, and wish to be treated as.RELATED: How To Successfully Ask Out The Girl Of Your Dreams

As coronavirus fears mount, you could be forgiven for ghosting your next Air China flight – or resolving never to book one again. I didn’t have this luxury though, travelling from Sydney to Beijing in the weeks before the first cases were reported, on Air China’s much-maligned economy. However, despite now interpreting every sore throat as pneumonia, what I discovered aboard one of Air China’s Boeing 777-300ER jets shows most travellers have serious misconceptions around the 99 (and falling) ranked airline in the world (according to Skytrax). To provide perspective, RyanAir, Jetstar and Scoot all rate significantly higher than Air China in the Skytrax rankings.Oh, and Air China has an average passenger rating of 3.6/10, on Airline Ratings. So: here’s what it’s really like to spend 11 hours on one of the ‘dodgiest‘ airlines in the Asia-Pacific, from the depths of economy.
View this post on Instagram
The seats are actually… not too bad
Considering Air China is known as a ghetto on wings (cheers, Tripadvisor’s Most Hysterical), the seats weren’t actually that cramped. That said, I am amoebic skinny, so I can imagine someone with, as Westfield once indelicately put it, a “ghetto booty,” would endure a tight squeeze (though no more so than they would with RyanAir and co).
The movie selection was refreshingly good
I don’t know if this is because I am sick of the same old up to date selection offered up by Qantas, Emirates and so forth, but Air China was the authentic meat pie to the more expensive airline’s overcooked souffle.I indulged in a Fast & Furious binge, followed up by Four Weddings & A Funeral. So don’t expect the latest Netflix specials, but if this is your first time travelling Air China the entertainment options make for a refreshing change.
The toilets were surprisingly spacious (although the tap didn’t work)
Dysentry fears aside, the bathroom offered ample space to get changed.
Breakfast is… a pleasant surprise
If you can get over the fact that no-one has been able to wash their hands, considering the muck usually served in Cattle Class, Air China is pretty decent. Not as good as say, Qantas, but no worse than middle-ranked airlines in the Skytrax list.Oh and even though it is considered an inferior airline to Cathay Pacific, I’ll take Air China’s brekky over the bizarre fish soup I was served for breakfast on my return journey with the Hong Kong competitor any day.
Dinner is ok, but the chocolate mousse will make you feel sick for days
View this post on Instagram
Top tip: don’t greedily eat your partner’s chocolate mousse (after already having eaten yours), unless you fancy a sugar crash for the ages.
Very dark decor
While this point may have been driven home on me extra hard as a) this was a night flight and b) my next flight after this was a day flight on Swiss Air, the cabin seemed more like an underground rave cave than a bright and breezy sky-carriage.
Beijing airport is an experience in survival
Call it poor planning on my part, or extreme negligence on the part of The People’s Republic Of China, but it was minus ten degrees in Beijing when I arrived, and not much warmer inside the airport.Add in I had just come from an Australian Summer (and had, as usual, left my jacket in my hold-luggage) and the fact that the airport was under construction, and staying warm is a serious challenge.Whilst this is not specifically Air China’s fault, this drawback can be avoided by flying an airline which doesn’t go via Beijing.
My luggage did not get lost
Air China may be known as a prolific luggage ‘dissapearer’ but it worked out fine for me.
Excellent value for money
All up, I do not regret flying Air China in the slightest. Take note, Australians: this was $1,200 (to get to Europe, return) well spent (this Air China journey was just one leg).
It actually has a decent safety rating
Not that you’d know it by the stereotypes, but Air China has a safety rating of 7/7, according to Airline Ratings.

The black-tie dress code brings numerous challenges. But once you’ve stopped quibbling whether to wear a bow tie, whether white sneakers are acceptable and whether or not to pre-eat (canapes are a minefield), you’ll be faced with a question more timely than a metronome: what kind of watch should I wear? While A-Rod might go for a Rolex Cellini Dual Time and while Daniel Craig might choose an Omega Speedmaster when faced with a formal dress code invitation, Jay Z has gone with a Jaeger-Le Coultre Reverso Tribute To 1931 in pink gold.Stepping out at the Pre-GRAMMY Gala and GRAMMY Salute to Industry Icons Honoring Sean “Diddy” Combs on January 25, 2020 in Beverly Hills, California, Jay Z paired the Jaeger-Le Coultre Reverso Tribute To 1931 with a white tuxedo, tinted round sunglasses and a gold ring. While the Jaeger-Le Coultre Reverso Tribute To 1931 is not something most guys would think of buying as an ‘all rounder’ (you know, a watch as suitable for cave diving as it is for boardroom meetings), it is a watch collector’s dream: classy, understated and a little bit different.
