This $145 Seiko Is The Ultimate Affordable Alternative To An Iconic Swiss Watch
This $145 Seiko Is The Ultimate Affordable Alternative To An Iconic Swiss Watch

If you’re a lover of luxury watches but don’t have the budget for one, there are a whole bunch of affordable model that look like the Rolex Submariner, Hulk or Batman of your dreams. But what if your grail watch is something more niche and tasteful? Something like a Blancpain Fifty Fathoms, say? Typically, I’d say you’re shit out of luck, but today my answer is different.

You can currently score Seiko’s Fifty Fathoms for $170, saving you around 40% off its $295 RRP, and that’s not even the best part of this watch.

Founded in 1881, Seiko has a long and illustrious heritage and is famous for making stylish and durable watches at affordable price points. Their watches are so good, some of them have become cult classics and are often considered the best watches you can get for $500 or below.

This Fifty Fathoms is no exception and more than holds up Seiko’s formidable reputation. Built on Seiko’s famous ‘5’ platform the watch features an in-house Seiko Caliber 7S36 automatic movement with a 40-hour power reserve, a stainless steel case and bracelet, rotating bezel, 100m water resistance and luminescent hands. In combination, these features position the Fifty Fathoms as one of the best value propositions in the watch world.

Not only does the watch perform on a technical level, but also looks great. The bezel, black dial, gold hands, hour markers and use of lume makes it look near identical to Blancpain’s Fifty Fathoms; a watch with a price tag well over $14,000. The caseback on the Seiko is clear, meaning you can see the automatic movement work away, something also seen on the more expensive Blancpain.

Really, there is no reason not to score this epic watch from Seiko: for a mere $170 you’re getting a watch that not only looks like it’s worth $14,000, but also functions as a watch worth much more than it costs. Available in four classy colours, you’ll find one that suits your collection.

Floyd Mayweather Slammed For Promoting Strip Club Rather Than Paying Respects To Kobe
Floyd Mayweather Slammed For Promoting Strip Club Rather Than Paying Respects To Kobe

Floyd Mayweather has made a number of social media faux pas in his time. Such is the price of being a celebrity athlete – when the whole world is watching your every move you are bound to make a few wrong steps.Yesterday, however, Mayweather made a mistake that it appears many cannot forgive, posting several “girl collection” images to his Instagram account to promote his Las Vegas strip club, as the sports world mourned Kobe Bryant’s shock death.Kobe Bryant, one of basketball’s greatest players, “was among the passengers who died Sunday in a helicopter crash in Calabasas, California,” USA Today reports.

“Bryant… 41… was en route to an AAU basketball game Sunday morning when the helicopter crashed.”

On Monday, the following images were posted to Mayweather’s Instagram account (with the caption: “GIRL COLLECTION IS THE PLACE TO BE IN VEGAS ALL WEEKEND LONG,”) sparking outrage amongst even his own followers. From, “Maybe just one day in your life [you] could care less about your fkn money and dedicate to one legend that actually we all care about,” to “Fuck your strip club,” many of Mayweather’s followers were not impressed. It’s unknown whether the posts were done by a social media manager (rather than Floyd himself) or whether they were automatically scheduled before Kobe’s passing. Either way they have now been deleted.

“Unfollow this guy.”

This isn’t the first time Mayweather has deleted an Instagram post, with Business Insider reporting in 2018, “Floyd Mayweather has deleted all his Instagram posts referencing the Tenshin Nasukawa fight after claiming he never agreed to it in the first place.”This latest mistake appears to be (potentially) a lot worse for his reputation; previously sports fans could overlook his juvenile antics, but to be seen not to have respect for Kobe (whether intentional or not) is harder to forgive than his trademark cash-flashing.

Life Hacks Every Man Needs To Know
Life Hacks Every Man Needs To Know

Pop quiz hotshot: You’re a modern day man caught up in the daily grind, littered with hazards and naysayers on your path to glory. What do you do?Firstly, stop watching re-runs of SPEED. Secondly, you make a bee line to the winners’ circle and arm yourself with some sage advice in the secret art of winning. If you’re a stylish man on the move with little time for life’s quibbles, these are your twelve greatest life hacks to get the job done with flying colours.

#1 How To Google Like A Winner

googlePrefixes are a beautiful thing and so is the Google dialect. Know when and where to use things like ‘site:’, ‘~’, ‘..’ within your searches to fast track your results and avoid the search engine spitting at you weird stuff like sexy single grannies in your local area.

#2 What To Do With A Shaving Cut

shaveEvery man can do with this one. Simply dry the area and dab on some Vaseline to form a water tight seal and the bleeding will stop. Boxers and MMA fighters use this in the ring all the time so it’s guaranteed to be more badass than a Snoopy band-aid. Just go easy on the Vaseline as you don’t want to look like a wax figure of Michael Jackson.

#3 Hang Suits & Dress Shirts On Cedar Wood Hangers

hangerYour best threads deserve the best form of care and that means not having them destroyed by moths, moisture and condensation. Cedar wood hangers act as a repellant for these unwanted things and because they’re thicker, they are also less prone to damaging and stretching out your clothes.

#4 Double Tap The Space Bar On Your iPhone

iphoneWe get it – you’re one well sought after mofo. In the midst of firing off endless messages to your buddies in a heated battle of Jennifer Love Hewitt vs. Sarah Michelle Gellar, you may face the dire conundrum of having to navigate to that page with the full stop. Well no more. Simply double tap the space bar and one will magically appear. It also adds a space and capitalises the next letter automatically. Say what.

#5 How To Break Down A Door

fireYou’ll never know when this one will one day come in handy so don’t write it off. If you’re caught in a pitless ball of fire and need a quick exit plan, this is your ultimate survival guide. Alternatively, use this hack if you suspect your partner’s been cheating on you.

#6 Walnuts Can Get Rid Of Wood Scuffs

walnutWalnuts are not just for squirrels. If you ever find your finest wooden pieces to be scuffed, fight that squirrel for the walnut. Once you’ve owned the little bastard, rub your fingers along the scratch for a short moment then proceed to rub the walnut into it. Your fingers will naturally warm up the nut’s oil before it gets soaked into the wood. Buff it out with a cloth for a pristine finish.

#7 Fold Your Garments As Opposed To Hanging Them

foldThis one’s a golden rule of men’s wardrobe maintenance. Even your lightest sweaters are prone to stretching if they sit on hangers for too long. The trick to not turning your entire wardrobe into a long-line ensemble is to only hang suits, dress shirts and other lightweight garments. Basic T-shirts are okay given they see high rotation and don’t sit there for months at a time.

#8 Pour Salt Onto Any Fresh Stain To Remove It

wineEven the cleanliest gent will be faced with this unwanted situation one day. Whether your date spills red wine on you or your blender decides to throw a seizure, simply run for your nearest salt shaker. Scatter those bad boys on your garments, fabric or carpet whilst working the salt in with your hands Patrick Swayze pottery-style. Leave the salt to soak for a few hours before vacuuming the coloured crystals out and voila!

#9 Chew Gum When Cutting Onions To Avoid Tears

onionNot that there’s anything wrong with a crying man, but if you ever do find yourself in a losing battle against the forces of nature in front of a crowd, simply chew some gum whilst cutting. You’ll be a real man in no time.

#10 Ironing Without An Iron

dryerWoken up to a Monday morning with no iron and many wrinkled shirts? Learn to iron like a real man who doesn’t own one. Simply pop it into the dryer for a few minutes with 3-4 ice cubes and voila – you have naturally crease-free shirts.

#11 Saving Your Water-Damaged Smartphone

phoneThis one is a classic that every man should know even if they’ve never had the pleasure of their smartphone meeting the sink or worse, a toilet bowl. Turn the phone off immediately to avoid any short circuiting. Sometimes the device will do this automatically.Do not turn it back on straight away as this will cause a short circuit and fry your device beyond saving. Instead, drop it in a bag of rice for 24-48 hours before removing it and switching it on as normal. The rice grains should draw out all the moisture in a timely and efficient manner. The toilet smell is another issue.

#12 If You Forget Which Side Your Car’s Fuel Cap Is On…

gaugeLook at your dash gauges. If the fuel gauge is on the left, your fuel cap is on the left. If it’s on the right, your fuel cap is on the right. Boom.RELATED: How To Be A Man Who Has His Shit Together

Nick Russian Talks Style, Family & Throwing The Coolest Parties
Nick Russian Talks Style, Family & Throwing The Coolest Parties

It started with an idea for a nightclub at the age of twenty five. A decade on that dream has evolved into Eve Bar, one of Melbourne’s most recognised nightspots for celebrities and the city’s fashionable partygoers. It may sound like a familiar Kings Cross identity, but that’s where the similarities end. Nick Russian is a father, a husband and a family man who knows how to grind his teeth in the hospitality scene whilst looking damn good. Rachelle Unreich sits down to chat style, work ethic and how to throw the city’s coolest parties.

RU: What’s your personal style?

NR: It’s a tough question: as a man, I don’t get into those conversations with mates. Maybe it’s a little bit Italian – at the moment I really like that whole Italian Pitti look when it comes to suiting. I like what David Beckham wears – he’s always on point. But geez, I don’t know. I don’t sit down and assess my day to day style; I don’t know if it’s a really masculine thing to do! If I like it, I wear it.

RU: Does your wife Rozalia [Russian, with her massive fashion following on Instagram] get a say?

NR: Often the stuff I wear, she hates. She’ll say, ‘Get that off!’ Sometimes if you’re wearing something new, you will turn to the wife and say, ‘Is this all right?’ and hopefully she says yes. If she says no, I wear it anyway. Usually she thinks what I wear is okay.

“Dad came to Australia when he was little and grew up in housing commissions, so it’s always been a part of me – the harder you work, the luckier you get.”

RU: Label-wise, do you have a favourite?

NR: I reckon when it comes to shoes, you need to spend a few more dollars, so I’ll wear, maybe, Gucci shoes. When it comes to everything else, I think you can get some great clothing at a relatively decent price. I’ve got items that are expensive as well as super cheap. At places like Topshop you can get a great suit jacket for a reasonable price, but I’ve got one from Dolce & Gabbana too. I don’t go into a shop just because it’s expensive.

RU: Who do you think was your style influence?

NR: My mum and dad have always dressed really well. Growing up as a kid, mum and dad instilled some personal pride into my brother and [me]. Mum was a stay at home mum, and dad used to have his own different businesses that he was involved in that would vary over the years.

RU: Like you?

NR: Very similar. My brother and I are always looking at different opportunities; it’s our personalities. We’ve always worked in the hospitality business. We share an office. We were talking about it today – there are so many opportunities that get put in front of you, and you’ll look at one and think you’d do something differently or better.

So when you look at something and think you could do it better, you try to do it [yourself]. We like to think most times we come through with a successful plan, but sometimes we don’t, and sometimes we have a great idea but end up running short of time.

RU: Do you have a career high?

NR: I don’t really get proud of something that’s work related. Once something’s set up, you’re busy looking at your next move. The thing [I’m] most proud of is being a father, but when it comes to work, we’ve been pretty proud of the achievements we’ve had with our nightclub, Eve Bar. It’s been a great success over the last decade. I was 25 when I came up with the concept of what it was, and now that I’m 36, [my brother and I] are pretty proud of that.

“Kanye was actually rather quiet and introverted when we spoke to him.”

RU: What are your nightclub clothes?

NR: They always consist of an old pair of shoes because of that many drinks that get spilled over the top of them, and about 20-30 different jackets, on rotation.

RU: You’ve hosted many a celebrity at Eve over the years. Most memorable encounter?

NR: We’ve been lucky; there have been a lot of celebrities who have passed through. Probably Kanye West and Britney Spears. Kanye was actually rather quiet and introverted when we spoke to him. This was going back to our first year when we were opening the bar, and he was just on the verge of becoming enormous, so he was quiet but very polite. Britney Spears was the same.

RU: Is social media a part of your life with Rosa’s success?

NR: Rosa’s done really well with her Instagram. For me, it’s not on a day to day basis. I don’t really think about it; I just go with the flow. I don’t take any of it too seriously, to be honest. I usually spend more time on social media when I’m away on holidays, and you think that’s a cool photo, and you share it with your friends.

RU: Do you have a good balance between work and play?

NR: It’s not really that easy, that’s probably my biggest problem. I must drive Rosa insane in terms of turning off. On holidays, I’m constantly checking my emails. But when we do go away, I try to do all my emails first thing in the morning, and try to turn my phone off or put it on silent for the greater party of the day. I do try to spend as much quality time as I can when I go away with Rosa and my daughter. My biggest issue is switching off.

RU: Where is your favourite place to go away?

NR: I love Italy. My family’s Italian, and I just love it. I love the culture, the food, the scenery, the fashion. I always feel at home there. I love the North. My two favourite places are Milan, where I lived back when I was 21 and modelling over there, and I always love Lake Como as well, which is more of a relaxed environment. The place itself is just spectacular.

RU: Do you have anything you’re passionate about doing? Hobbies?

NR: All I do is actually work at the moment. I work six days a week, and on my day off, nine times out of ten, I’ll spend it with my family, and friends. Previously, I loved sport. I love football and going to the gym and everything else, but I don’t really have a great deal of time to pursue much of a hobby these days.

RU: And you’re obviously close with your brother…

NR: Yeah, we’re only two years apart. We did everything together – played footy together, went through school, and we’ve worked together forever. Growing up as kids, we’d punch each other around the house as young brothers do, but we were always super close as kids and still are today. We’re very similar personality-wise, but we have our own strengths in certain areas.

RU: What’s a motto that inspired you?

NR: My dad [always focused on] loyalty, family and to work harder than anyone else. Dad’s always said, ‘No one’s going to throw a bag of gold over your fence, so you’ve got to go out and make it yourself.’ Dad came to Australia when he was little and grew up in housing commissions, so it’s always been a part of me – the harder you work, the luckier you get.

RU: What’s your ideal dinner party conversation?

NR: I don’t have an answer for that. One of my strengths is that I can talk to anybody, whatever their background is, whether they’re the Lord Mayor or a garbo. I’ve got a good broad knowledge across many subjects. I can get a conversation going.

RU: Are you a romantic?

NR: I’m not the slightest bit romantic. I’m terrible at presents, I’m shocking. The worst thing I’ve ever given was when I was five and I gave my brother the Christmas present from the year before.

RU: Favourite book?

NR: I like biographies, true stories. I liked the book about Kerry Packer, The Rise and Rise of Kerry Packer.

RU: I can hear your brother in the background. How does he describe you?

Brother: A pain in the ass! I’m him, but taller.

RU: Do you have any hidden talents?

NR: Growing up, I was pretty successful with my sporting career; I played elite football and also did boxing. But I don’t want you to publish that Nick is good at this, this and this! These days, the thing that people don’t know about me is that I’m actually rather a good cook. I taught Rosa how to cook. I taught her all the old recipes from my Nonna on my father’s side, who had restaurants in Italy.

Fitness Coach Reveals What Every Man Should Know About Vitamins
Fitness Coach Reveals What Every Man Should Know About Vitamins

Think you know your vitamin A from your vitamin B7? We thought not. Vitamins are vital to the upkeep of the human body, we all need them and they all come from a variety of sources. But breaking down exactly what each vitamin does and where we can get them from can be more painful than leg day.To make things that little bit easier, personal trainer Pete O’Reilly has conveniently laid out a table on Instagram detailing everything you ever needed to know about micronutrients (vitamins). He says there are two types of vitamins: fat-soluble, and water-soluble. There are also essential and nonessential, which refer to vitamins we can only get from our diet and ones that our body produces naturally, respectively.

A post shared by Peter O Reilly FRCms P.T. 🇮🇪 (@p.t.pete) on

Fat-soluble vitamins – A, D, E, and K are most commonly found in fatty foods and are stored by the body for long-term use, whereas water-soluble vitamins – C and Bs 1,2,3,6,7,9,12 – can be found in fruits, vegetables, dairy, and grains and pass through your body. And, before you ask, the gaps in the numbers are deliberate, they used to exist as vitamins – B4 for example – but have since been reclassified. Some vitamins, such as C and D, are well-known and we know we can get them from orange juice and sunlight respectively, but B6 anyone? It’s Pyridoxine, which helps to make red blood cells, and improves our sleep, appetite, and mood. It seems pretty important, then. Excuse us while we go and stock up on tofu and bananas.Fortunately, for the vegetarians and vegans out there, the majority of the vitamins our body needs to carry out its daily functions can be found in plant-based foods, not just meats. So at least you won’t have to resort to vitamin supplements, which have been found to have no real health benefits whatsoever. Although it’s also fair to say that a purely meat-based diet doesn’t exactly do your body any wonders. It’s most definitely all about balance. So now that you’re clued up on all there is to know about vitamins, you can use your newfound knowledge next time you’re shopping to stock up the fridge. A healthier you awaits.

Man Reveals The Sad Truth About Going 500 Days Sober
Man Reveals The Sad Truth About Going 500 Days Sober

It’s something no man ever really wants to hear, “I think you should quit drinking”, “I think you need to lay off the alcohol for a bit” or even, “Do you even remember what you did last night?”. Alcohol plays a big part in the lives of many men: a National Health Survey published by The Australian Bureau of Statistics founds that 84.5 percent of Australian men consumed alcohol between 2017-2018.But have you ever, truly, taken a step back and considered what effect drinking alcohol on a regular basis has on your health? Yes, it makes you feel good in the moment of being with friends and family, but we’ve all been subjected to our fair share of hangovers, am I right? To help illustrate the effects of giving up the good stuff can have, Fred Schebesta, founder of Finder.com.au, Australia’s most visited comparison site, said sayonara to the cider and bye-bye to beer in August 2018, as he embarked on a 500-day journey stone-cold sober and found it allowed him to achieve “hyper-success”.Revealing his findings to News.com.au, not only did Fred live life hangover-free, allowing him to carry out 10km runs the day after work events (some feat when you consider you can barely walk 10 yards the day after the work Christmas party), it also caused him to realise that he didn’t need to have a drink in social situations.https://www.instagram.com/p/B55-846ghXu/Social anxiety is something a lot of us can likely relate to. When you find yourself in a crowd alone, or turning up to a party but you don’t know anyone there, you most likely head to the bar to get yourself a drink and calm your nerves. Perfectly normal behaviour, although you’re far less likely to attract attention sipping on a gin & tonic than if were to neck several tequila shots in quick succession.Fred noted that he often found himself becoming overwhelmed not only in these situations but in intensely stimulating environments too, such as Times Square in New York.

“I used to use alcohol to feel less uncomfortable”, he recounts.

However, during his sobriety, he once again found himself at a number of social events. “Being sober taught me that I didn’t need a drink to be comfortable in social situations. It made me more present and aware of those around me and able to better engage with people.”Ed Latimore, a former heavyweight boxer who recently documented his observations from giving up booze for five years, found similar effects when placed in social situations. He says that while it’s common for us to want some “liquid courage”, it can actually have the opposite effect, “When I would talk to people while drinking, it was difficult to remember what was being said, to stay focused on the stories being told, or to read body language and tonality.”

“For every person who said I was fun while drinking, there are at least a dozen who have less impressive memories of me while drunk.”

Fred also found that saying no to ‘just a quick one down the pub’ resulted in him feeling much better emotionally. “After drinking alcohol I always felt a low, or a bit imbalanced, and I would take time to reset and get back to a normal state”, he says,“Since being sober, I’ve been able to eliminate this emotional turbulence I used to feel. I can maintain a constant heightened level of mood and health, and I don’t get stuck in a cycle of needing to reset.”Ed mirrors this too, “If I felt socially awkward somewhere, I drank to feel more comfortable. If I hit on a girl and got rejected, I drank. This is just how I dealt with negative emotions.”

“With alcohol no longer an option, I am forced to deal with all of these emotions — good and bad.”

Another factor Fred and Ed can both agree on, is that removing alcohol from their daily lives allowed them to focus on things that really mattered, such as learning new skills, spending time with people that mattered to them and achieving personal goals. Fred says, “If you want to achieve something, you need to remove things like alcohol that stop you from achieving it. It takes a lot of discipline, but once you master it, you will have greater clarity and more focus on your goals.”Ed adds, “It doesn’t matter who you spend time with. What’s important is spending time with people who matter. I find that removing alcohol from my life has simultaneously removed some people while adding others.”Not only can staying away from the good cupboard at home have positive effects on your internal self, but avoiding the high calorific intake alcohol brings with it can have drastic effects on your appearance too. Bored Panda has compiled a gallery of before and after photos, from people who recognised they had problems with drinking but decided to kick it in. The results speak for themselves.Of course, we’re not saying you have to go cold turkey in order to live a better life (what we would do at music festivals, for example) but perhaps cutting down a few beers each week can have a #goodvibesonly effect.

This Is Your Chance To Own James Bond’s Aston Martin DB5 In Australia
This Is Your Chance To Own James Bond’s Aston Martin DB5 In Australia

When ‘Goldfinger’ was released in 1964, the producers probably didn’t expect James Bond’s mode of transport to go on to be just as famous as the titular secret-service agent. But that’s exactly what happened, and to this day, the Aston Martin DB5 is not only one of the most famous cars in James Bond history, but also one of the most recognisable cars in the world. And now is your chance to own the very same car and be like Bond, with his model for sale on Carsales right now. This particular car has lived a bit of a jet setter lifestyle, having been first purchased in Glasgow, UK, before being driven around Europe and then imported to Adelaide where it has remained ever since, and in the hands of the same owner. For your A$1,125,000, you, unfortunately, don’t get machine guns behind the headlights, an oil slick delivery system at the back, or revolving number plates. And you’d be joking if you think you’ll get the little red button underneath the gear knob to fire the ejector seat (“I never joke about my work, 007”). But, what you do get, is a car that is in completely original condition. That is, it hasn’t been restored in any way, but rather, has been expertly maintained to keep it in full mechanical order. The leather seats show signs of wear, but it’s something to be expected of a car that’s over 50 years old. Although, we imagine you won’t care what condition they’re in when you put your foot down to release all 282 horses from the 4.0L engine upfront. It’s a truly gorgeous car that will have your friends, family, and other road-goers green with envy.See the Aston Martin DB5 for sale on Carsales here.

This $95 Jacket Will Keep You Warm Whilst Looking Classy

It’s strange to think that in 2020 there is a niche that isn’t filled, but Bearded Goat has found one that is rather more prominent than you might think. When the weather starts to take a turn for the worst and you want to look sharp, but not too sharp, nor too casual, what do you wear? A puffer is warm but isn’t so sophisticated, whereas a peacoat is probably a little too dressy and isn’t as warm. Bearded Goat felt there was something in between these two and created the Diamond Insulated Shirt Jacket.

Insulated with a mid-weight synthetic down, the Diamond will keep you warm but won’t make you hot and still has a lightweight feel. It features a selection of external and internal pockets, snap button closure and a DWR coating to helo protect against rain, snow and dirt. It’s evidently very capable, but what about the looks? Well, it’s a ‘shirt jacket’ meaning it has a similar cut to your favourite dress shirt, but is thicker and includes pockets. The collar is a smart touch that helps the Diamond look much more sophisticated than a simple puffer.

Priced at $95, the Diamond is a very reasonable proposition. Whether you go for the black or the grey, it’ll easily pair with jeans, chinos or even something smarter. It’s the perfect addition to your wardrobe for those colder days where you want to be warm all whilst looking modern and sharp.
