In order to maximise our fitness regimes, we’re often told we should keep a close on eye on the foods we eat and the calories we put into our bodies. The recommended daily calorie intake for men is 2,500. But if you want to bulk up and add muscle, you should put more into your body, and if you want to trim the fat, then you should cut down.
While these practices can provide results, Max Lugavere, nutrition expert and author of The New York Times bestseller Genius Foods, says you should be careful when it comes to processed foods. In a recent Instagram post, he says that the labels on the products we buy can be misleading.
View this post on Instagram
This isn’t so that they can be more appealing to us as consumers, but legally, they can have a high margin of error. This means that if a product says it has 100 calories, for example, it could actually have up to 120, resulting in a higher calorie intake than the one you’re aiming for.
His solution? Eat real food instead. Not only can you still easily reach your desired calorie intake amount, but you also have a meal that is more satiating due to the levels of fibre, protein, and water. He references a 2019 study carried out by Hall et al. that wanted to observe the effects processed and non-processed foods can have on the participating group.
The group of 20 participants was randomly split into two groups. Half the group started on a processed food diet for two weeks, immediately followed by two weeks of unprocessed food. The other half did the opposite.
View this post on Instagram
The results showed that while energy intake was greater from the processed foods, protein levels were low, compared to when natural, unprocessed foods were consumed. The researchers found that those who had a high energy intake (the processed foods) gained weight during the trial, whereas those who consumed unprocessed foods lost weight, over the same two week period.
So if you’re looking to lose your ever-expanding belly, throw out the junk foods and stick to a diet of healthy, unprocessed foods and you’ll soon find the pounds (and the mental burden of tracking your calories) start falling off. We understand if you want to wait until after Christmas, of course.

For decades Tom Dixon has been designing some of the coolest lights, accessories and furniture to grace our homes and his latest decanter is a functional accessory that is perfect for any bachelor pad. The days of cut crystal and related paraphernalia are long gone and should be left to reside at your dad’s creepy mates’ place. Today, if you’re going to store some nice whiskey at home, you need something that will fit in with everything else. Put it this way, cut crystal and a Google home don’t really sit that well together and hence it’s time to change.
Tom Dixon’s designs are everything the modern man wants and needs, they’re a little futuristic without being farfetched, high quality and functional. The ‘Tank Whiskey Decanter’ will look right at home amongst your smart home tech and will keep your whiskey just right for when you want to break it out. Priced at $150, it isn’t awfully expensive and blurs the line between a sculpture and a decanter so really you’re getting two things for the price of one. Whether you’re buying it for yourself or for someone else, it is most definitely a good buy.

Australians’ globe-trotting gluttony is surpassed only by their love for avocado on toast and their coffee snobbery. However, as The Lucky Country’s strong regulatory institutions (and vast quantities of coal) underpin its growth (the Australian economy is forecast to realise the highest GDP growth among major advanced economies over the next five years), it seems Australian travellers’ taste for the high life may be on the increase too.
This observation comes off the back of a Skyscanner study, which found growth percentages ranging between 25% and 76% for Australian travellers’ booking rates of some of the most popular business class routes of 2019.
View this post on Instagram
While the study does not yet appear available on Skyscanner’s website, frequent flyer points expert Points Finder shared the results on its Instagram page yesterday morning. Significantly, as some of the commenters on the above post pointed out, this list does not even include some hugely popular routes, like the Sydney to Denpasar corridor (which we experienced first hand earlier this year on one of Qantas’ fresh-faced A330’s).
This just goes to show the variety and depth of the Aussie business class travel market.
As for the top routes for Australian business class travellers, the top five routes for 2019 were; Sydney to Bangkok (30% growth in bookings), Sydney to New York (30% growth in bookings), Melbourne to Singapore (27% growth in bookings), Sydney to Shanghai (76% growth in bookings) and Sydney to Honolulu (25% growth in bookings).
Now, all we need is for people to behave themselves better on flights, and we’ll be laughing.

All too often we check out a sale online or in-store and end up buying something we don’t really want, wasting our money on something because it’s ‘designer.’ Well, it’s almost a new year and it’s time to change and the best way to change that bad habit is to buy this Saint Laurent Card Holder.
No: it isn’t some rogue, one-off edition with some sort of strange material in some strange colour, it’s the Saint Laurent cardholder you actually want. It’s made in Italy from black calf leather and simply features the Saint Laurent logo on the front embossed in silver.
Some might say boring, but hey: it’s a safe timeless bet that you’ll like and actually use for years to come. You can currently score it for $198, 28% off its $275 retail price which is very reasonable for something that wears the Saint Laurent name. Whether it’s a gift or for yourself, this cardholder is guaranteed to get some serious use and enjoyment.

Boys should wear blue, girls should wear pink. It’s an age-old stereotype that should have no place in 2019. If the phrase “real men wear pink” is true, then American actor and best-dressed man in the world Timothée Chalamet is more of a man than any of us.
Attending a promo for his latest movie Little Women in London on December the 16th, the Call Me By Your Name star can be seen rocking a full pastel pink corduroy Thom Browne suit. You can pick up the jacket at least yourself, for US$676, but it seems the trousers may be out of stock. He teams it effortlessly with a white shirt and white Prada x Adidas Superstar sneakers. Those sneakers will cost you a fair bit more than the jacket, though.
Released earlier this month as a limited run of 700 pieces, along with an equally limited bowling bag, the sneakers will set you back anywhere between US$1,890 and $2,800. It seems the Prada badge is worth spending an extra couple of thousand on to hypebeasts. Although, you do at least get Prada’s own leather and the knowledge they’re made in Italy.
Timothée is no stranger to donning stand out suits on the red carpet – take the silver suit he wore at the Venice Film Festival earlier this year – and his latest goes to show that with confidence, guys can wear any colour they damn well please. Pastel colours are particularly effective, especially in the summer months, although we’re not sure the corduroy material will be comfortable when the mercury begins to rise.
https://www.instagram.com/p/B17B-ziA0LC/?utm_source=ig_embed
His suit also proves that gender should have no bounds, and guys can dress and look after their bodies and skin without fear of being insulted. Hell, why stop at wearing pink, go and get yourself a manicure too, your hands will thank you.

When the Sydney Morning Herald wags its tongue at dating, you know something’s afoot. Enter: 2019, a year so desperate in love it has spawned a new hook-up trend (and bizarre buzzword) a week. Not content with ‘ghosting’ ‘paperclipping‘ and ‘houseplanting‘ modern amor-seekers have sought ever more nuanced ways to torture each other.
To that end: 4.5 million Australians date online, according to statistics from Relationships Australia, with dating apps now comprising “the second most preferred way to meet a new partner” behind introductions through family and friends.
“This is ahead of other traditional channels including interest-based clubs, holidays, pubs or bars, work and social networking sites,” Relationships Australia says, adding that “reduced stigma has promoted increases in online dating [and the associated new phenomenons that come with it] at all ages.”
It’s not just millennial publishers like Junkee and Vice that have lost their marbles over this: in 2019 everyone from The Washington Post to the New York Times and (as we mentioned) The Sydney Morning Herald has tried to unravel the mysteries of modern dating.
To that end: The Sydney Morning Herald yesterday published an article entitled “Eight New Dating Trends For 2020 (Don’t get Kanye’d).” Although they are all an exercise in patience at best, and infuriating at worst, one of the trends, ‘dial toning,’ caught our particular attention.
So, what is dial toning? We’ll allow the Sydney Morning Herald to take it from here: “Don’t get it twisted – this is not ghosting. Instead, dial-toning is the act of giving people your phone number and ignoring them when they reach out.”
“Sixty per cent of singles have experienced this, while 35 per cent of singles admit to doing this to someone.”
These figures come from the dating app Plenty of Fish, which recently came out with its annual dating trends survey, polling more than 1000 US-based Plenty of Fish users (ages 18-50) in November.
To get further insight into this trend, D’Marge spoke to couples counseller Heidi Gee. “Yeah, this happens a lot,” Heidi told us. Why? “Messaging on an app is quite different to speaking in real life [or on the phone].”
“It becomes real.”
The upshot? They bail, and, according to Heidi, this happens either because they were never 100% sold in the initial conversation or simply because they have found other people to talk to.
View this post on Instagram
So, what do you do if this keeps happening to you? Other than just talking to more people yourself, Heidi says the other solution to decrease the chances of being ‘dial toned’ is not to message for so long the conversation runs dry: call them sooner rather than later, and strike while the iron is hot.
Good luck.

As any watch aficionado will know, identifying the timepiece on another man’s wrist can sometimes be a laborious task. Unless you really do know your Tags from your Tudors or your Rolex‘s to your Rados, working out the wristwear can be a time-bending business.
Sure, you might be able to tell from distance that it’s an Omega he’s wearing, because of the bracelet style, but the exact model can remain an enigma. Fortunately, Chrono24 can lend a helping (second) hand, with its new Watch Scanner feature.
Built within the current Chrono24 app for iOS and Android, the Watch Scanner can be used to take a picture of a watch somebody is wearing either in real life or of a photo. Because the app requires you to position the watch dial clearly within the camera’s field of view, you will have to ask your new watch-wearing friend if he can hold still.
However, once you have taken a photo of the unidentified time teller, Chrono24 will search its database of over 15,000 watches, as well as in excess of one million images from some 6.5 million listings (both current and previous) on the Chrono24 site. Your search result will include, brand, model, reference number and current estimated value, both pre-owned and mint condition. We’re certainly going to try pitting it against our Captain of the good ship D’Marge, who rates himself as a top watch detective.
If you’re in the market to sell one of your own watches, you can have a listing on Chrono24’s site in no time, as the scanned image will automatically include all the basic information for you. The company has promised that the more people use the Scanner function, the more it will learn new makes and models to constantly build its database.

Beautiful women wearing tiny bikinis line the beach while shirtless men play Samba in the street. The jungle hums in the background and Christ The Redeemer stands over it all. There’s a lot to love about dating in Brazil. There are also a lot of stereotypes, however (see above), and it’s not always apparent where cliche ends and reality begins. Not all Brazilian men are flirt savants, for instance, and not every Brazilian woman will expect you to approach her.
View this post on Instagram
And yet – some cliches reign true. Even though Brazil doesn’t necessarily have more sun and sex than Ibiza (and not every beach has more sculpted bodies per square metre than Miami), statistics bear out that Brazil truly has the potential to be a straight single man’s paradise, with the CIA World Fact Book stating there are 97 men to every 100 women in Brazil. Not to mention, as couples counsellor and dating coach Heidi Gee shared with DMARGE, understanding cultural differences can help you increase your chances of finding a date. For instance, just because obviously not every guy in Brazil is an extrovert and not every women is an introvert, understanding the expectation that, as a man, you are expected (more than you might be in Australia) to make the first approach in Brazil, is useful to know.
“Do your research and respect the beliefs and customs.”
The problem is, most tourists and travellers looking for love in Brazil tend to make one of two mistakes. One: they don’t bother to learn Brazil’s cultural kinks, or two: they over-learn (or over believe) them, and end up projecting the stereotypes of a society upon the individuals they come into contact with. So: whether you’re making a football pilgrimage, are there for the carnivales, or are simply looking to relax and read a book on a nice patch of sand, here’s everything you need to know before looking for love in Brazil.

Don’t be shy
As Heidi told us, one of the first things she noticed when travelling in Europe and South America is that when it comes to approaching women in a bar, Australian guys “don’t have the balls” of their overseas equivalents, and are worried about “looking like a freak” in front of their mates. To many Aussie women who travel overseas, this can either be a relief or a pain in the arse, depending on the circumstances. For Australian men, however, it means that when trying to attract the attention of the sultry eyes across the bar, of course you still need to be polite and respectful, but also a little more direct than you are accustomed to.
Use Tinder
In this globalised world this is fast becoming a piece of generic advice. But the point remains: Tinder is hot in Brazil, with a market (10 million users and counting) second only to the United States. Plus, as travel website Culture Trip adds, “There is no stigma at all attached to using dating apps in Brazil so don’t feel shy about downloading them and searching for a date.”
“Dating aside, it’s also a great way of practicing your Portuguese.”
Time your trip
According to Culture Trip, “For casual hookups, there is no time in Rio quite like Carnival, where kissing and casual flings are all part of the celebrations.” It is also known as a time when there are higher levels of infidelity among relationships, which is something that is (apparently) “largely accepted as part and parcel of the party.” This isn’t the case for everyone, however.
“To meet people at Carnival, simply join a bloco (a moving street party) and feel free to mingle, flirt, and enjoy.”
Pay the bill
While there aren’t any really any rules per se for paying the bill on the first date, quite often, the man will insist on paying for the woman. Our advice; you should always offer to pay or split the bill (for gay couples, it is normal to split the bill and pay half each).

Master the art of ‘small talk’
No: we don’t mean the weather. We mean adding prefixes onto the ends of words to make them (and by extension, you) cuter. As the BBC reporter Ian Walker wrote earlier this year, this is one of the first things language learners realise when they arrive in Brazil: “I’d barely been in Brazil 24 hours when I was let in on a segredinho (a little secret).”“In a barzinho (a local bar) as the sun went down, a new Brazilian amiguinho (a good friend) I’d met in my Rio de Janeiro hostel had a frosted bottle of Antarctica beer sweating in his hand,” Walker continued. “Chatting about our night ahead, he poured our drinks and told me, “If you want to speak with a girl tonight, don’t ask her to have a cerveja [a beer]; ask her if she’d like a cervejinha (a little beer) instead.”
“She’ll love it if you use this word.”
Don’t have set expectations of sex (or the lack thereof) for the first date
No set-in-stone rules for this and this should always come down to what you (and your partner) are comfortable with and feeling keen to do. However, whatever you decide, don’t be too shocked if you end up at a pay-per-hour motel: “As it is common for Brazilians to stay living with their family until later in life, dating couples often rent a motel for a couple of hours in order to get some privacy,” (Culture Trip).
“Motels in Brazil are designed specifically for sex and many come complete with a hot tub, sauna, condoms, and mirrored ceilings.”
Keep your options open
Like any urban metropolis, if you’re in Rio or Sao Paulo, saying, “let’s catch up again” doesn’t necessarily mean that you will do, and if you’re on Tinder you should always assume your date is talking to other people. Everyone likes to keep their options open, so try to embrace the laid back vibes.
Don’t be close minded as to acceptable locations to meet (or find) a date
Strike up a conversation in bars or clubs, visit outdoor street parties, or even just head to the beach.
Don’t be upset if your date is late
It’s a cultural thing.
Be prepared for a little more PDA than you’re used to
Still confused? Check the word ‘carinhoso’ in the dictionary.
Set your overall expectations
As Culture Trip writes, “In a country that simply oozes sexuality, sensuality, and a fun-loving spirit, dating in Brazil can be relatively easy.” So far so good. However, “While casual hookups are pretty straightforward, making it last long term can be a bit trickier,” the travel website adds.In other words: if you’re looking for a holiday romance, it’s hard to imagine a better place than Brazil (“where the passionate residents will make you swoon”).But – particularly for any expats who have moved to the land of Neymar – you need to set your expectations realistically and be patient if you are looking for something long term.

Former 007 and all-round Mr. Cool, Pierce Brosnan is continuing to prove that when you pass the mid-stage of your life, it doesn’t mean your wardrobe needs to suffer. The Irish American actor, who featured regularly on our pages during his recent European excursion with his wife, is fast becoming the King of simple, minimalist style, and his latest outfit is no different.
Papped in his hometown of Los Angeles on December the 13th, Brosnan was seen wearing a smart-casual ensemble that might be a far cry from something you’d see James Bond wearing, but one that we hope we can pull off when we reach his age.
He seamlessly pairs a double-breasted charcoal wool blazer with a crisp white shirt, black suit pants, and brown suede shoes. And in typical suave Brosnan style, he finishes it off with a pair of cooler-than-cool aviator-style sunglasses. Charcoal and black might not be the first colour combination you’d gravitate towards, in fact, the two shouldn’t really work together at all, but Pierce carries it off with a certain savoir-faire.

We’re used to receiving style lessons of epic proportions from the Tomorrow Never Dies star, and his latest is no different. It’s a look you can easily put together yourself, and one that will work in the office, out for a stroll at the weekend or the work Christmas party. Just make sure the sports jacket fits well across the shoulders and isn’t so tight that when you do it up you’re in danger of a button popping off.
