While the rest of the world has had its eyeballs fixed on the US election, Formula One has announced a new race for next year: the Saudi Arabian Grand Prix, the second full night race on the F1 calendar following the Singapore Grand Prix.
This immediately sparked condemnation from fans and human rights groups alike, as The Guardian reports. Human Rights Watch’s Director of Global Initiatives Minky Worden was especially scathing of the decision to race in Saudi Arabia:
“Sporting bodies like Formula One and the FIA cannot ignore the fact they and [their] fans are being used for sports washing. It is part of a cynical strategy to distract from Saudi Arabia’s human rights abuses, detention and torture of human rights defenders and women’s rights activists. Formula One has made human rights commitments and should explain how the company’s operations will improve human rights in Saudi Arabia… Fans, media and race teams should use this moment to say their sport should not be associated with such serious human rights [abusers].”
Indeed, fans immediately voiced their displeasure, sharing their thoughts on Formula One’s Instagram post announcing the new event.
“We race as one, but when F1 can get money it doesn’t matter anymore,” one commenter snarked, referencing Formula One’s #WeRaceAsOne anti-racism initiative that was launched earlier this year.
Other choice comments included “another dictatorship on the calendar”, “F1 should be ashamed of itself for this”, and “maybe North Korea next?”

Many commenters wondered how Lewis Hamilton – the sport’s biggest star and outspoken advocate for the Black Lives Matter movement – would react to F1’s new Saudi Arabia race.
“Wonder if Lewis is gonna make statements against the complete lack of human rights in Saudi Arabia,” one mused. Hamilton is yet to comment on F1’s decision, but it’s not impossible to imagine him boycotting the race.
Another wondered why a Saudi Arabian circuit in Jeddah was being added to the calendar when well-regarded circuits that were raced in 2020 have been axed for 2021, such as the famous Nürburgring in Germany and Imola in Italy: “we have to race in Imola, Portimão and Mugello, not these horrible circuits.”

The largest economy in the Middle East and home to the Islamic holy cities of Mecca and Medina, the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia is considered one of the worst abusers of human rights and one of the ‘least free’ countries in the world, according to NGOs like Freedom House. Led by Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, Saudi Arabia has embarked on a concerted reformist campaign in recent years, with bringing big-ticket sporting and cultural events to the Middle Eastern monarchy a big part of their push to improve their global image.
Saudi Arabia is far from the only country with a questionable human rights record to host a Formula One Grand Prix. Azerbaijan, Bahrain, Russia and the United Arab Emirates will host Grands Prix in 2021, and countries like China and Turkey have also seen F1 events in recent years.
On the plus side, 2021 will also see the Australian Grand Prix at Albert Park in Melbourne return to the F1 calendar… But that’s cold comfort to any Aussie race fans who give a toss about defending human rights.

A new human totem is currently being elected to represent the United States of America. This is causing much furore and speculation, both financially as well as socially.
On that note, in a breath of fresh air, global financial firm UBS has reported some findings that appear to put a persistent myth to bed.
A Trump government is not necessarily better for Australian equities.
Likewise, a more tax happy Biden government is not necessarily worse.
“UBS researchers also believe the best result for Aussie stocks would be a Democratic sweep, meaning Joe Biden becomes president and takes control of the senate,” 9News reports.
“Australia could benefit from stronger US economic growth under a Democratic sweep, particularly given the higher weight to cyclicals,” the researchers noted, according to 9News.
Though the ABC reported this evening “whoever gets in is facing a potentially gridlocked congress,” a Biden win is still not necessarily a bad outcome for Australian investors – so long as there is not a contested election and civil unrest.
Despite the phrase many will have heard thrown around that ‘despite his flaws, Trump is better for the economy,’ when it comes to Australians investing it’s not that simple.
According to the UBS researchers, “while higher tax rates in the US [which would likely happen under Biden] could drag on S&P 500 EPS, it would make Australian equities a relatively more attractive place to invest.”
“Indeed, the AU – US corporate tax rate differential potentially narrows from 9 per cent to as low as 2 per cent under Biden’s proposal.”
“Our global equity strategists view a Biden win with a Republican Senate as a good outcome for US equities as it would likely see Biden’s trade policy effectively combined with Trump’s status quo on tax policy,” the researchers added.
UBS also pointed out that, historically, “the ASX 200 has rallied 6.9 per cent in the three months after a US election, regardless of the result.”
Another important factor to consider, in terms of Australian equities, is trade policy. This is because, though more often than not the ASX follows Wall Street, what really drives where our equities go is “global macro themes.”
James Whelan, an Investment Manager at VFS Group in Sydney, told DMARGE these “global macro themes” often make it seem like the ASX follows Wall Street, but in fact it’s more the case that both Wall Street and the ASX are reading the worldwide room.
Not that the success (or otherwise) of NASDAQ or the NYSE doesn’t affect Australians’ confidence in their own market, but correlation and causation are a little bit jumbled.

Whelan also, speaking to SBS, said “my message to investors is pick and choose which sectors you’re going into, don’t just buy an entire index willy nilly.”
He also said there is “also potentially a softer position [coming up] on China,” if Biden were to be elected, which could put Australia in a more comfortable position, by reducing the tension between our “parents” (the US and China).

To what degree is it ok to fantasize about a co-worker? Think that’s a controversial question? Wait until you hear the dilemma recently put forward by one unlucky Reddit user.During a recent episode of Oops! The Podcast, co-host Francis Ellis read out the question of a female Reddit user, whose partner had been getting giddy for a colleague.“I understand guy talk and I don’t think it’s necessarily a bad thing for guys to talk about girls, but this goes deeper than that. Also, I work in HR and have seen people get fired for offenses far more innocent than this.”Francis explains her occupation is a vital part of the story.“I got suspicious about one of [my boyfriend’s] co-workers who is 21, so I got on his phone and had a look. They work at different locations but they have worked together before for a long time.”
“I didn’t find messages to her, and it didn’t seem like they had each others’ numbers, but I found messages between him and another manager talking about this girl.”
“My boyfriend was calling her ‘the sexiest person he’s ever met in person and a goddess’, which is his main nickname for me. It hurt to see him call another girl this.”“He was also talking to his co-worker about what he would do to sleep with her. His co-worker texted him to say she was driving behind him and my boyfriend said ‘pics or it didn’t happen’, his co-worker sent pictures of the girl behind him which prompted my boyfriend to continue talking about how hot he found her.”
“I get guy talk but this crossed a line. I got pissed at my boyfriend and he got mad because I looked through his phone.”
“Rage is stemming from two areas: one is due to the disrespect he has for our relationship and two is he’s indirectly sexually harassing the girl with another manager.”
“If someone saw the messages they could be fired.”
“Am I overreacting or do I have the right to be upset?” she finishes. The podcasters agree this speaks to her immense professionalism, with co-host Giulio adding, “this is the problem with searching through phones.”“Usually though you have a reason to search and the boyfriend here is clearly a toolbag. They’re nine months in [to the relationship], cut your losses.”Francis agrees and brings up the paradox of Schrödinger’s cat, a theory that relates to a cat being placed into a sealed box in which there is also some radioactive material that will kill the cat if it releases. What we don’t know is a) whether the material is released and therefore b) if the cat is alive or dead. The only way of knowing is to open the box and see what’s inside. However, it’s said that by opening the box and upon (potentially) seeing a dead cat, you are responsible for the cat’s death (if it is dead) because you brought that death into reality. Until you opened the box, the cat could have been alive.Francis applies this theory to searching through your partner’s phone. “By looking you are effectively killing the cat.”
“The information doesn’t exist until it does.”
He also says, “the fact that she is considering the implications for her boyfriend’s career ahead of the sting of his betrayal to their relationship speaks to her professionalism as an HR person.”It also – though our protagonist is clearly upset – provides a lesson in emotional maturity. Get calm and collected. Express your disappointment and get above it all rather than mimicking your parter’s betrayal. This will affect them much harder than if you sink to their level. In any case, the two podcasters quickly conclude the woman’s boyfriend is a tool: “Who is this loser, who talks like that?”
“That’s not guy talk, that’s just someone who is gonna cheat on you as soon as he gets the nod from the 21-year old.”
As for the woman’s professionalism, Giulio posits it may not be as emotionally mature as it seems, saying, “it’s the classic thing you do when you’re pissed and jealous, you try to act like you’re actually concerned about other things, but in reality you’re just so pissed off your boyfriend just wants someone else more than you.”He then admits he’s probably projecting and that in this instance she has the right to be aggrieved.Alternatively, Francis posits, based on her comment, “it hurts me he would risk his career for some guy talk,” perhaps our female heroine honestly “can’t step out of her role [as an HR person].”A harder question than deciding who pays for the Uber the morning after a hookup? We’ll leave that one up to you. What it unequivocally shows is that snooping through your partner’s phone rarely ends with good news. Not to mention: the problem is your relationship, not the phone. And if you feel the need to snoop so you already have two problems as a couple to work on: trust and communication. So, what should you do if you suspect your partner is straying?Huffington Post contributor Debarati Chakraborty says, “Trying to collect evidence or snoop around their laptops, phones and social media can be nerve-wracking and frustrating, and can affect your mental health, so it is generally preferable to have a conversation before playing detective.”Speaking to The Huffington Post, clinical psychologist Ruchika Kanwal adds, “Refrain from calling your 3 am friends and discussing it.” According to Kanwal close friends are unlikely to be objective – they may take everything you say at face value and join you in hypothesising about why your partner might be cheating on you, which could make your anxieties spiral.“My advice is to allow your partner to explain himself before you accuse him of cheating.”

Business class may be a luxurious playpen, but it’s not perfect. From the infamous ‘nutgate‘ incident at Korean Air to Virgin Australia’s more recent ‘noodlegate‘ run in, we’ve been shown time and time again neither the pointy end product nor people are beyond reproach.
Enter: the latest incident of a business class passenger being kicked off a flight.
Police removed two women from American Airlines flight 772 from Dallas Fort Worth to Miami on the 30th October, The Independent reports, after one of them tried to hide in the footwell of her friend’s business class seat.
The plan was for her to remain that way the whole flight to “drive viewers to their Youtube channel” one aggrieved passenger, who witnessed the incident, claimed on aviation forum Flyertalk on October the 31st.
“When you think you’ve seen it all and proving that society is becoming stupid and of course ONLY on a MIA [Miami] flight was what I witnessed last night DFW/MIA in J on the 772.”
“I was seated in 5J and during boarding the woman across from me had a friend come up from Y and visit. I saw the friend crawl under the J seat (more exactly the television console) but began to watch a movie. Well apparently the plan was for this woman’s friend to remain there the entire flight as it’s something they thought would drive viewers to their ‘You Tube Channel.'”
“The flight was 100% full but the FAs noticed on the taxi out that one Y seat was empty and there was a purse sitting in the seat. Paxs around that seat said the woman just got up and left. So there’s an announcement for this pax to identify herself or we can’t take off. At that point I realize that she’s hiding under her friend’s J seat. I can tell the a/c is pulling off the taxiway to park and as soon as it’s parked my intention is to ring the call button if this woman doesn’t give herself up. She does and tries to sneak back into Y but is immediately busted by the FAs.”
“Chimes starting going off and the FAs announce that the a/c is going to be moving and that all to take their seats. Most of the a/c has no idea of what is going on but the Captain announces that there is a ‘security issue’, we’re going back to the gate to ‘take care of it’ and will then be on our way.”

“By then the forward compartment of J (me included) is crucifying the woman because her stunt is forcing us to return to the gate. She’s screaming that she’s being disrespected, did nothing wrong, she paid good money for her ticket and that she has a child at home waiting for her. By then she’s also taken off her mask.”
“Supervisor comes on (not sure what’s happening with the woman that went back to her seat in Y) and tells the J passenger ‘miss you need to gather your belongings and come off the a/c.’ The passenger refuses and continues to scream sans mask. In the interim the Captain bolts out of cockpit, very unhappy and tells the woman to get off the a/c. She refuses and the police show up to drag her off. In the meantime another pax in Y starts to cuss out a FA because of the delay and the police drag him off.”
“Later the Captain asked me what I saw and I thanked him for throwing them off the a/c. He said there were ‘a couple more Security concerns with them’ in addition to what I saw.”
“This was after we had a 90 minute delay because a catering truck had hit a cargo door. While I doubt they were arrested I hope these paxs were immediately banned from flying AA and told to find another way home to MIA. And not refunded their tickets.”
“Before departing… American Airlines flight 2205 from Dallas-Fort Worth International Airport (DFW) to Miami International Airport (MIA) returned to the gate at DFW for an issue involving two passengers,” an airline spokesperson told The Independent.
“The two passengers, travelling together, would not comply with seat assignments during taxi out. Law enforcement met the aircraft at the gate, the two passengers exited the aircraft and the flight departed shortly after.”
Strange times indeed.

While we’re not averse having a cocktail (or three) here at DMARGE, there’s nothing quite like a beer. Tasty, refreshing, and the go-to spark of conviviality in any setting, it’s hard to resist the amber nectar.
But one thing beer isn’t is a health food. All alcoholic beverages are calorific to some extent, but beer is particularly heavy in that regard. For example, a pint of Heineken contains about 227 calories. In comparison, a vodka soda or dry martini can weigh in as little as 100 calories (especially if you don’t eat the olive in the latter).
Couple that with beer’s relatively low alcohol by volume – meaning you have to drink more in order to get more buzzed – and you can potentially be putting away thousands of calories on a night out from your beer consumption alone.
It’s why most people who are really into their fitness will forgo beer entirely, or choose low-carb beer instead. As it stands, low-carb beer represents 15% of all beer consumption in Australia, a trend that’s continuing to grow, according to industry publication Beverage Daily.
But one fitness fanatic who laughs in the face of beer naysayers is Sydney’s Khan Porter. The 6x CrossFit Games Athlete and self-described “craft beer enthusiast” boasts one of the most enviable rigs in the country – and proves that enjoying the occasional bevvy doesn’t have to scupper your fitness goals.
View this post on Instagram
“Honestly, I don’t have a strict ‘I only drink X amount of times a week / month / year’… if there’s a social event that involves beers I’ll have some, if I feel like a beer while watching the footy or a movie I’ll have one. I’m really relaxed with my approach to food / balance,” Porter shared exclusively with DMARGE.
“I feel like when you try to restrict yourself too much it swings in the opposite direction and people end up just thinking about what they can’t have. I eat and drink what I want when I want to. Knowing I can have a beer or a burger at any time means most of the time I’m inclined to make good nutrition choices anyway.”
One of the most common mistakes that people make is being too hard on themselves when it comes to diets or fitness regimes. If you restrict yourself too severely, it can actually increase the risk of ‘relapsing’ or not sticking to your health goals – it’s like how people who decide to go cold turkey when trying to quit smoking are rarely successful.
English nutrition and fitness expert James Kew relates that “a diet only truly works in the long run if it is sustainable,” and that ill-considered or overly restrictive diets can “often damage peoples relationship with food.
“This creates orthorexic eating habits as people start to label food as something which is either ‘good’ or ‘bad’. As a ‘guilt-free’ food, or a ‘guilty’.”⠀⠀⠀
RELATED: Little Known Problem With The Diet ‘90%’ Of Fitness Professionals Spruik
Indeed, Porter’s indulgence in a beer every now and again might actually be the secret behind his enduring success. It’s emblematic of a happy and healthy relationship with food. It also makes it easier for him when he does go into ‘crunch time’.
“If I feel a little heavier leading into competition I may tighten things up. But that usually means just being more conscious of things like snacks etc.,” Porter explains.
Beer consumption is at an all-time low in the Land Down Under, with spirits and to a lesser extent wine steadily growing their market share. However, the craft beer scene is healthier than it’s ever been, with independent breweries like Young Henrys, Cattleyard Brewing Co., BentSpoke and Moon Dog steadily gaining in popularity.

In response to the massive gathering of voyeurs, officials have banned surfing at Nazaré, Portugal’s premier big wave attraction, and one of the world’s most iconic surf spots.
This follows last week’s “century swell,” which saw everything from potentially world-record-breaking rides, altercations between jetski drivers and terrifying wipeouts.
View this post on Instagram
Portugal’s National Health Commission announced the ban on Wednesday, November 4th. It is to remain in place “until further notice.”
Surfline reports, it’s “understood that the Mayor of Nazaré is working to allow freesurfers access to the water, outside of ‘events.'”
The ban has come at a poor time for those hoping to watch the Nazaré Tow Surfing Challenge, whose waiting period started on the 2nd of November.
View this post on Instagram
A photo of a statement from the harbour HQ, obtained by Magic Seaweed, reads (translated from Portuguese):
“In the current context of the pandemic in Portugal, as determined by the regional health delegate and the regional health administration, Free Surf and Tow-in surfing are banned at Praia do Norte, due to the promotion of the public agglomeration, which constitutes an increased risk for the public health. Failure to comply with this determination incurs in a criminal offence punished by law.”
“There were too many people on the beach [to watch last week’s swell], 20-30k people on the beach man, so yeah, maybe it’s the right decision,” Portuguese big wave surfer Nic Von Rupp told Magic Seaweed.
Andrew Cotton, an English big wave surfer, told Magic Seaweed he had no plans to appeal the decision: “I understand their position and it’s for the benefit and safety of others and the local community. It effects a lot more people that the surfers though, which is a great shame.”
Nazaré regular Rafael Tapia, however, told Magic Seaweed: “I think it’s a terrible decision.”
Though Tapia recognises “the situation on the cliff was chaos,” he told Magic Seaweed he believes there are smarter ways of solving the problem.
“Considering that it’s so easy to block the entrances to Nazare, I hope this decision is reviewed. Feels like us, the surfers, will be paying for the irresponsible behaviours of spectators. It’s our passion, our job and authorities can easily control that. Although the risk of getting injured in Nazare is quite high, it’s very unlikely we will put pressure on the hospital system, but that is not a reason surfing should be banned.”
If DMARGE had to guess, we’d say the closure is symbolic (perhaps like Manly and Bondi’s temporary closures earlier this year), intended to deter visitors more so than surfers, and that a resolution to keep the professional sportspeople happy will soon be underway.

Everyone wants a special relationship with their real estate agent. It’s not hard to see why: spectacular deals, the inside word on stinkers, the first call up on tasty ‘off markets’ – all these stereotypes abound.
Reality isn’t that simple though – both in terms of the ease with which you imagine yourself building said relationships, and the benefits which will allegedly flow.
DMARGE spoke to Edward Brown, Director at leading Australian real estate provider Belle Property, who told us, “most properties go to market – don’t rely on just being told about ‘off markets’ when you’re not in a position and able to act.”
However, if you do want a shot at those ‘holy grail’ off markets, you need to play your cards right. Namely: don’t muck your real estate agent around. This is the most important piece of real estate etiquette advice many Australian first home buyers forget.
“When building a relationship with your real estate agent,” Brown told DMARGE, “be upfront about what you’re looking for.”
“Get an understanding of what they have coming up; be ready to buy.”
“As soon as you’re ready to buy and bidding on other homes you’ll be in an agent’s front of mind because you’ve been actively pursuing properties they’ve been showing you.”
“If you’re sharing that sort of information with agents they’ll be looking after you because they know you’re red hot and ready to go.”
Rich Harvey, CEO and Founder of Property Buyer, argues building these kinds of relationships with a number of real estate agents is “absolutely essential.”
“Agents provide the access and the conduit to vendors. While you can try and approach vendors directly, you actually have a better chance of doing deals via agents as the vendor feels that they have ‘tested’ the market, and will also be more educated on market values by the sales agent.”
What should you do in order to build strong relationships with estate agents and get priority treatment? Though Harvey is speaking to investors rather than buyers generally, his advice is applicable to both: “Attend open home inspections. Give them your details. Show the agent you are a serious buyer, treat them with respect and reply to phone calls and emails.”
“Don’t waste their time.”
“How important is it to show you are a serious buyer? What should you have prepared to demonstrate this? Tell them your key criteria and what you are looking for. Develop a ‘Buyers Brief’ and give this to the agent,” Harvey adds in the aforementioned Property Buyer article.
“If you make an offer – then follow through. If you keep putting in false offers to an agent you will get the same reputation as the boy that cried ‘wolf.’ If you put in lots of crazy offers, you can lose the respect of the agent.”
Also – though this is one man, who works in the space’s, opinion – Harvey recommends you keep in regular contact with your real estate agent, initiating a conversation once a week or so, but no more.
“Don’t stalk them, so anything more than once or twice a week might be overkill.”
There you have it: the word from the agent’s mouth. Happy house hunting.

There’s nothing more evocative of an Australian summer than a barbeque dinner. Whether you’re grilling meat, seafood, vegetables or cheeses (the sound of haloumi squeaking as it cooks is one of life’s great pleasures), the smell and taste of barbeque is unparalleled.
One of the great debates in the barbecue world is gas vs charcoal. While charcoal is widely acknowledged as tasting superior, gas has long been touted as the easier choice.
Until now, that is. Australian brand Everdure has partnered with world-famous chef and culinary pioneer Heston Blumenthal to create the 4K Charcoal BBQ: a seriously stylish and innovative piece of kit that makes charcoal cooking a breeze.
One of the big plus-sides to cooking with charcoal is that it produces far more heat than any other type of barbequing. That used to come with a big downside, however: it’s dirty and hard to control. Not so with the 4K. Not only does it require a surprisingly small amount of wood to get going, but thanks to its unique airflow technology and easy-to-use touchscreen LED panel, it’s almost impossible to stuff up.
You don’t even need matches, lighter fluid or fire starters: just one button does the job for you. Plus, it has a cool-to-the-touch exterior and auto-locking hood, making it safe as houses.
Another innovation the 4K brings to the table is connectivity. You can connect your Android or iOS phone to the BBQ via Bluetooth so you can wirelessly monitor your grill’s temperature, and you can even set temperature alerts – making burnt bangers a thing of the past.
The other big thing the 4K has going for it is that it simply looks spectacular. When you think ‘charcoal barbeque’, you’re probably thinking of something a caveman would cook with. But the 4K’s slim form factor and minimalist, attractive design means it’s just as hot inside as out.
Designed by Australian Industrial designers D+I and winner of numerous international design awards including Good Design Awards Australia, International Design Excellence Awards, Red Dot Awards and the IF World Design Guide Awards (legitimately big news for an Australian company), the 4K is one stylish beast.
DMARGE teamed up with Anthony Puharich, fifth-generation butcher and co-owner of Victor Churchill – maybe the best butcher’s shop in the world – to show just how easy cooking with charcoal is with Everdure’s magnificent 4K BBQ.
You’re excused for drooling, by the way.
Check out the 4K – as well as Everdure’s entire range of capable BBQs – at everdurebyheston.com.au.

Mark Wahlberg just shared the most brutal workout ‘finisher’ we’ve seen in a long time.
Taking to Instagram, the Spencer Confidential and Mile 22 star can be seen doing push-ups combined with floor-less (arguably flawless as well) double leg knee tucks – achieved by hooking his feet into TRX straps and supporting his weight through his arms, gloved hands on the ground.
Posted yesterday, the video has been seen 405,224 times, and was captioned “superman finishers.”
View this post on Instagram
At the end of the clip (in which the 49 year old actor does 10 reps, under the watchful eye of a trainer) Wahlberg says: “And that’s with a bad back, baby,” looking pleased with himself.
This is far from the first time Wahlberg has shared a workout.
“Wahlberg, with the assistance of F45 coach Shannon Helm, can be seen doing one-legged pushups, his leg balancing on an exercise ball,” DMARGE reported in July, after Marky Mark shared another bizarre-looking fitness circuit.
View this post on Instagram
“If that wasn’t hardcore enough, he’s upped the ante by using Perfect Pushup handles on top of a Power Plate, whilst also wearing B Strong BFR armlets.”
While that exercise looked a bit gimmicky, as we reported at the time, there might be some science to back it up (while the science isn’t settled on whether or not vibration plate equipment like the Power Plate can reduce recovery time, some fitness experts suggest that because it exercises multiple muscle groups at once, it can reduce how long you need to work out).
View this post on Instagram
In Wahlberg’s latest workout, however, the benefits are simpler (if more brutal). There’s a great mental hurdle (i.e. it’s bloody tiring) to working your core strength like this at the end of a workout.
However, as Harvard Medical School attests, developing good, balanced core strength is hugely beneficial for your back, helping prevent injury (or as the case may have it, re-injury), as well as your posture.
Just make sure not to work one side of your body more than the other – you don’t want to inflame any underlying imbalances.
