49-Year-Old Fitness Trainer Reveals Why You Should Never Skip Pull Up Day
49-Year-Old Fitness Trainer Reveals Why You Should Never Skip Pull Up Day

While the old adage might say “thou shalt never skip leg day,” it’s fair to say that a lot of guys still do, choosing instead to focus on their upper bodies. But those upper body workout routines often typically comprise bicep curls, bench presses and tricep pulldowns: classic, proven moves that will bring you the muscles you seek.

49-year old, father of 5 and former world ranked pro duathlete Paul Sklar has other ideas, however, and reminds us to never skip pull-up day, in his latest video posted to Instagram.

Pull-ups can be likened to leg workouts, in so much as nobody really wants to do them, yet they know how effective they can be. Being able to perform competent pull-ups is a sign of genuine upper body strength, making them a move you really should be adding to your workout routines as much as possible.

You don’t necessarily have to start off aiming for high numbers of reps, far from it. The pull-up, despite how simple it sounds, can actually be a tricky exercise to perform right – fortunately, Paul himself has previously provided a perfect explanation to getting the most from your pull-ups – so if you only manage to complete 4 or 5 reps on your first try, it gives you a great starting point from which to progress.

As for Paul, he’s clearly never skipped pull-up day judging by his performance in his Instagram video, completing a section of the Rugged Maniac obstacle course in Massachusetts, USA: a three-mile obstacle course with over 25 obstacles to get past. Finding himself hanging onto some floating poles, Paul finds himself having to hold himself up, rather than allowing his bodyweight to hang, to guide himself across the bars. Holding himself in this position will put tremendous strain on his shoulders and upper back, the main areas worked when performing pull-ups.

He explains in a separate video that, if you’re using a weights machine that includes a pull-up bar or handle attachments, you don’t always need to use the wide-grip, despite its numerous benefits. Instead, he adds, “Mix it up a bit and try something new so you don’t get stale.”

Joe Jonas Spotted Wearing The Most Unexpected Rolex Ever Made
Joe Jonas Spotted Wearing The Most Unexpected Rolex Ever Made

When it comes to the Jonas Brothers, talent – and good taste – clearly runs in the family.

Nick, Joe and Kevin all boast rather impressive watch collections, the three musical siblings all sharing a passion for haute horlogerie. Youngest brother Nick's is particularly lavish, with the 29-year-old regularly rocking Richard Milles and diamond-encrusted Bulgaris, and eldest brother Kevin's is the most understated, both in terms of quantity as well as sheer value.

But Joe's is perhaps the most mature. The middle brother owns a truly diverse range of watches from a wide variety of watchmakers: Audemars Piguet, Cartier, Maurice Lacroix... But his favourite brand is easily Rolex – indeed, he's rarely seen without his white gold GMT-Master. But his favourite watch, another Rolex, is a bit more obscure.

Out with brother Nick in New York last week, Joe was spotted having a cup of joe at Hugh Jackman's New York café, Laughing Man Coffee, wearing a 1960s Rolex Oysterdate 'Mickey Mouse' – an eclectic choice with a rather emotional backstory.

[caption id="attachment_302974" align="alignnone" width="920"] Images: Getty / Christie's[/caption]

While it's funny that a celebrity that got his start on the Disney Channel would rock a vintage 'Rollie' with Mickey Mouse on the dial, Joe's not just wearing this for brand loyalty's sake. Nick actually gifted the watch to Joe, his best man, ahead of Nick's wedding to Priyanka Chopra in 2018. According to Joe, it was the same watch their grandfather wore his entire life – a touching, thoughtful gift.

Mickey Mouse watches are a time-honoured tradition, the famous fictional rodent appearing on everything from mass-produced tchotchkes to high-end Gérald Genta retrograde pieces. Rolex, too, had a rather unlikely licensing deal with Disney from the 60s up until the 80s. Typically, Mickey Mouse watches use Mickey's hands as watch hands, but Rolex's take on the genre use standard hands and hour markers, a somewhat unusual choice.

Prices for Mickey Mouse Rolexes vary wildly. For example, this 1972 model that's very similar to Jonas' successfully sold at a Christie's auction for US$9,375 back in 2019. It wouldn't be out of the question to assume that Jonas' watch is worth five figures – but the sentimental value makes it truly priceless.

The grandfather connection aside, Mickey Mouse watches are actually a real 'watch nerd' thing. Joe rocking such an idiosyncratic piece speaks volumes about his character as well as his passion for horology: in short, real men wear Disney watches.

It's also nice that the Jonas Brothers have this shared passion for watches. Maybe that's why they've been able to stay successful as a band (and largely drama-free in the public eye) for so long: shared passions and interests beyond simply being siblings.

Now if you'll excuse us, we're off to tell our siblings we expect to be gifted a Rolex when we get married. Seems only fair...

Scary JetBlue Flight Incident Shows Why Flight Attendants Need Self Defence Training
Scary JetBlue Flight Incident Shows Why Flight Attendants Need Self Defence Training

America has seen a surge in unruly passenger behaviour over the last twelve months, much of it centred around a minority of passengers who have been reluctant to wear masks, and then becoming agitated when they are asked to comply with airline rules.

There have also been some other, more off-piste incidents. One woman, for instance decided to spark up on a Spirit Airlines flight, causing uproar in the process. Another story for the books is the man who had a (verbal) sparring match with the woman behind him over the territorial status of a window shade.

Last week news broke of an even scarier incident, involving a man trying to storm the cockpit on a JetBlue flight, as well as allegedly strangling and kicking a flight attendant.

The incident occurred last Wednesday evening. ABC News reports that a flight attendant told the FBI that with just over an hour left in the flight from Boston to San Juan, Puerto Rico, the man tried to place a phone call and "became angry about the call's unsuccess."

According to the FBI affidavit, half an hour later the man moved towards the cockpit, shouting in Spanish and Arabic to be shot.

A flight attendant managed to usher the man back into the passenger seating area during which point the unruly passenger allegedly grabbed the flight attendant by the collar and tried to kick them in the chest.

Eventually, he was subdued (with the help of other crew members) and put in flex cuffs. The plane then safely landed at its destination. The man was then taken into custody by authorities.

A sad story – and also one that illustrates why flight attendants live by the maxim 'if it can happen on the ground, it can happen at 40,000ft'. This is something flight attendant Kat Kamalani talks about in the below video, where she explains the real reason airline staff always greet you at the door of the plane.

Why flight attendants always greet you when you are entering a plane

It also illustrates why many flight attendants are now receiving self-defence training.

Daniel Craig Explains How He ‘Fan-Boyed’ His Way Into Star Wars Cameo
Daniel Craig Explains How He ‘Fan-Boyed’ His Way Into Star Wars Cameo

When you portray one of the most famous characters in all of movie history, surely that would be enough to keep you happy? Everyone wants a piece of you. You're recognised immediately wherever you go, getting 5-star treatment and fans begging for autographs.

However, for Daniel Craig, clearly, everything that comes with being James Bond, 007, appears to have not been quite enough. And so he used his connection with the famous British secret agent to land himself a cameo role in Star Wars: The Force Awakens – the 2015 movie that sparked a brand new trilogy in the Star Wars franchise – as none other than a Stormtrooper.

It would probably have been out of the question for Craig to be given a cameo role which would reveal his face, as fans may have become confused as to why he would be appearing in such a movie without so much of a backstory. The only route was to place a helmet over his head.

Speaking to BBC Radio 1 recently (via Screenrantwhile on the promotional tour for No Time To Die – the last time Daniel Craig will don the suit and tie and be gifted gadgets from Q-branch – he said it was due to his "hutzpah" – and a second assistant director that happened to work on both movies – that he was able to secure his Stormtrooper cameo.

Craig told BBC Radio 1: "I don't think I could've done that if I hadn't have been James Bond. Yeah, there are lovely, lovely things like that. And having the hutzpah to do that is because I'm James Bond. I wouldn't have done that any other way."

"But I asked the second AD on Star Wars, who's our second AD, a lovely guy called Ben Dixon. And I said, 'Ben, come on. Come on. Get me in. I can be a stormtrooper. He was like, 'Ask JJ'. JJ was like, 'Get him in'. He gave me a scene. I just thought I was just going to stand at the back holding a gun. I would've been happy with that but he actually gave me a scene."

No Time To Die is finally due to be released in the US on 8th October, and Australia on November 11th 2021. Originally scheduled for release in November 2019, but was delayed due to the departure of director Danny Boyle. With a new release date of April 2020 penned into calendars, the film was delayed once again due to the Covid-19 pandemic. A new date of November 2020 was agreed upon, but it had to be rescheduled once more, and after a few more dates were planned, it will finally get the outing it deserves at the world premiere on 28th September at the Royal Albert Hall, in London, England.

Sterling Archer: A Very Stylish Man-Child
Sterling Archer: A Very Stylish Man-Child

archerWho the hell is Sterling Archer? Sterling Archer is a household name.An iconic representation of all that is seductive about masculinity – his martial prowess, easy charm, Bondian good looks – Archer resonates with an aspiring generation of young office workers which dream of achieving the necessary preconditions to ‘alpha’ manhood. After all, who doesn’t want to drive a Dodge Challenger, wear super 220 merino wool suits, and live the high-spy-life in a NYC penthouse? However, it’s probably worth mentioning he is a] fictional and b] a satire of the aforementioned male narrative. He botches missions, persistently stumbles into HR nightmares, can’t handle his booze and has a nuanced relationship with his mother (the context of which deserves a psychiatric manual, not an article). However, the  animated man can dress – and what could possibly be more important than taking style advice from a goddamn cartoon character? Here, I’ve collected a few nuggets of sartorial wisdom that have been uploaded to his Twitter in an attempt to break the fourth wall.

Archer says: “When choosing a dress shirt, know what prints work for your body. Here’s a hint – it’s between zero and none.”

For sure, the classic white & white shirt/pocketchief combo is an elegant and dependable choice out of which any man can enjoy substantial mileage. But for five days in a row? Your mates at work will think you’re recycling the same shirt everyday and your missus will begin to think she has selected a mate who lacks imagination.I’m taking the middle ground on this one. No one is asking for you to wear multi-coloured Bengal stripes, but a couple blue and white micro-check shirts, and a thin pink stripe option go a long way toward breaking up your weekly corporate game.Wear a crisp white shirt on Monday and Friday to open and close the week (or something).

Archer says: “Your lapels shouldn’t be so big, they make me hungry for a slice of pizza.”

Unless the office has a 70’s throwback party on Friday, leave the off-the-shoulder lapels at home (sorry, Tom Ford). But don’t go too far the other way. Pencil-thin lapels scream too much 60’s mod and exude a juvenile, private-school quality that detracts from the serious businessman you’re trying to be.Again, middle ground. Find something that will fill out your chest and offer a degree of proportionality, while not overwhelming your upper body. Easy peasy.

Archer says: “With cufflinks, go for understated elegance. Don’t wear tiny snow globes on your wrist unless your statement is, ‘I am Santa Claus’.”

Same goes for tap-shaped cufflinks, because you’re not a plumber and the boxing glove option, because no one really believes you when you say “yeah dude, I do MMA on Tuesday nights”.This applies to your accessories. When fussing over a tie bar, lapel pin, or pocketchief, keep it modest. You’re not trying to overwhelm your peers with your sartorial taste. You do, however, want to offer subtle, inviting hints of how much better dressed you are than them.

Archer says: “Bright, patterned ties are a good choice if your work involves balloon animals.”

No disrespect towards the gallant men and women that entertain during carnivals, but if your hilarious tie is the only thing pulling your day-to-day out of despair, you need a therapist, not a men’s lifestyle magazine.

Archer says: “Whoever told you it was okay to wear navy with black is trying to ruin your life with crushingly slow, public ridicule.”

Aside from your immaculately polished, handmade-in-Northampton stompers about which all your mates are madly jealous, you should keep black to a minimum in your weekly office uniform. Doubly important, if your suit is on the darker end of blue.A black shirt and blue suit worn together will make you look like a bouncer, or an up-jumped anime character. A black tie and blue suit may not lead to public ridicule and eventual downfall. But it will make you the sombre-looking guy in the office. Archer is right, sans hyperbole – keep your colour marriage in mind.

Archer says: “You shouldn’t compare yourself to others…unless you’re wearing a Super 220 Merino Wool suit and they’re not.”

I’m calling our favourite (fictional) master of espionage out on this one. Your suits are a uniform, yes – contemporary battle-dress for the modern corporate warrior. They’re not however a license to look down on your peers.Nor do they give carte blanche to smirk at the guy on the street who doesn’t wear a suit to work. Be a good bloke. It’ll make the Super 220 Merino Wool suit as it’s more delicate than Donald Trump’s ego. The man makes the suit, not the other way round.Archer might be a pretty hopeless spy. If everyone is in on the game that you’re up to the secret business, you’ve probably failed the fundamental precondition of success.Ignoring that, his rampant alcoholism and abstention from responsibility hasn’t stopped him (or the studio PR team) from crafting a decent entourage of style tips with which you can approach the working week in greater confidence. So you might not have the penthouse or Dodge Challenger yet but at least you’ll be on your way to creating the impression that you do or one day will.
