A brand spanking new car is all well and good; you’ve got some of the very latest technologies to take advantage of, both in terms of keeping the car on the road, and the experience sitting inside the cockpit. But for all their modern benefits, they can’t compete with classic cars when it comes to soul, character and even looks. So, you’ve set yourself aside a good chunk of money to invest in a car, and you’ve decided that old is the way to go. Where do you go to buy one? We imagine, initially at least, you’ll look online to see what’s out there, gather reviews and work out what car it is you want to see sitting on your drive. You’re obviously going to need to go and see a few in the flesh though to really get a good feel, and a dedicated classic car dealership is the way to go. Not only will they have a good level of stock, but the staff will have an unrivalled knowledge of the cars on sale, helping you to make an informed decision. When you’re buying a classic car, it’s important to know where that car originated. Ideally, you want to buy an Australian delivered classic car. Why? Because cars destined for Down Under may have been adjusted from non-Australian cars to cope better with the conditions on these shores. This could be in the form of bigger cooling systems or having their engine calibrated for the fuel that comes out of Australian pumps. You’re also going to get a right-hand drive vehicle too, rather than buying an imported car from Europe with left-hand drive. Something delivered directly to Australia will also hold greater resale value, should you ever decide you want to part ways with your new baby.Australia has a huge classic car culture, and to that regard has a number of dedicated outlets and clubs where you can buy a new, used car. Here are the places you need to checking out.
Pickles
Pickles is an online marketplace for all things cars. While it’s not just classic and prestige vehicles available to buy or view through the Pickles platform – it’s home to the largest selection of ex-government vehicles in Australia – it’s definitely a reliable and renowned place to get your classic car fix. The majority of prestige and classic cars listed on the site come from auctions all around Australia, but you’re able to view the listings and bid on them directly through Pickles, making the whole process incredibly simple and easy.If you’re new to auctions then Pickles allows you to register as an observer so you can an idea of what actually happens. Of course, if the car of your dreams pops up then dive right in and bid away.
Dutton Garage
Dutton Garage, based in Melbourne, is dedicated to buying and selling classic, rare and exotic cars. The showroom may be situated in Melbourne, but Duttons has a global presence, being able to sell and export cars out of Australia or even import them in, should you have a specific car you’re after that can only be found internationally. While Dutton Garage doesn’t necessarily specialise in any particular brand, it’s not uncommon to find a wide range of Porsche, Ferrari and Mercedes-Benz.
Classic Throttle Shop
Classic Throttle Shop was founded in 2003 in Sydney and in the years since, the team has cemented themselves as one of the go-to showrooms for all your classic car needs. The company boasts it has the finest selection of classic cars in the entire southern hemisphere, but with brands such as Ferrari, Porsche, Aston Martin and Jaguar in the listings, we’re inclined to believe them. Each car listing on the website has a detailed history of the car, including where it has spent the majority of its life. Classic Throttle Shop does its best to source most of its stock from enthusiasts and collectors, owing to the fact the car will likely have had a better life as a result.
Shannons
Understanding that collectors and enthusiasts will go to auctions as their first port of call when wanting to buy a classic car, Shannons has been operating since 1981. The auction house conducts up to 10 auctions each year in Australia across Melbourne and Sydney, and has become a trusted outlet for classic car purchases due to the wealth of information they know about, and provide with, each car that comes through the doors. No one brand is preferred over another, so expect to find a range of vehicles from all the around the world, including those native to Australia, such as classic Holdens.
Car Clubs
Of course, you could skip out the ‘middle man’ and find yourself a classic car for sale from a car club. Clubs, such as the Porsche Club NSW, for example, are made up of a group of members who share a common passion for their car brand of choice. The cars they own, then, will be well looked after, with routine servicing and maintenance to keep their cherished cars in roadworthy conditions. They, therefore, make a reliable point of sale when you’re looking to add to your collection. You don’t have to be a member to buy a car through a dedicated club either, nor do you need to be one to post an advert if you have a car for sale (a small listing fee is usually applicable to non-members).If you know the brand of vehicle you want to buy, you can usually find a complete list of car clubs in your area or state by searching online.
Gumtree
Inevitably, we have to talk about private sales at some point and Gumtree is one of the best places around. You’ll find a vast majority of dealers will advertise their cars on Gumtree, owing to the large audience it attracts, but a fair number of private sellers will list their vehicles too. This means the selection on offer through Gumtree will be one of the greatest out of all the outlets mentioned on this list. However, if you go down the private sale route, you’re unlikely to get any sort of warranty or buyer protection compared to if you went through a dealer. The upside to this is that you should have more room for negotiation, meaning you can potentially get the car of your dreams for less.
Carsales
Carsales is easily the largest online marketplace for new and used vehicles in Australia and is so often the first place many Australians will turn to when they’re looking to add to their car collection. The website is incredibly easy to navigate and you’re able to fine tune your search so you only get the exact results that match your criteria. As with Gumtree, you don’t get buyer protection from Carsales, as the majority of transactions will be carried out privately. But for sheer selection, Carsales is hard to beat.
Trade Unique Cars
Trade Unique Cars is a website that deals with exactly what it suggests: unique cars. It’s an online portal for both dealers and private sellers to list their vehicles for sale, and there really are some absolute beauties on there. Cars such as V8 supercars that have seen some serious race time or old school New York taxis are just the tip of what you can expect to find listed. For one of a kind cars, look no further.
Police Auction
Police auctions are where seized items, such as cars, are sold at auction if left unclaimed for a set amount of time (usually a few months). They don’t tend to be held by the actual police department, but rather a third-party auctioneer, such as Pickles. You’re not guaranteed to find classic cars through police auctions, but occasionally some will pop up, and since they’re police impounded cars, there’s a good chance they’ll have some stories to tell.
Local Paper
Before the age of the internet, we had to check the classifieds in the local paper for cars and other general goods to buy. Believe it or not, that is still the case, and if you turn the near the back of your local, you’ll find some classic and vintage cars for sale. With it being local, you may even know the seller, and it’s always good to buy from someone you know because they shouldn’t short change you, right? If they do, you always know where they live.
What To Look For
Buying a car, new or used, always comes with the common association of a sleazy car dealer who will do everything in their power to sell you something that may not always be what you want. That isn’t always the case, but there are certain things you should be careful of when buying a classic car.As we’ve mentioned, you can either go down the dealer/auction route or go private. Trade-dealt cars will usually be more expensive than private, but you will be in a better position to get some form of compensation should anything not be as good as it seemed when you bought your car. Also, budget is important. Not only do you need to make sure you can genuinely afford the car you’ve lusted after, but remember, there is the upkeep that comes with ownership. With it being a classic, parts may be harder to source, making them more expensive and you’ll want to make sure you take it to a mechanic that specialises either in classic cars in general or the brand you’ve settled on.So, now you’re (hopefully) a little more clued up with regards to buying yourself a classic motor, we implore you to head out and find that car of your dreams.

We'd all love to have the chest of Schwarzenegger, the legs of Ronaldo, the arms of Thor (aka, Chris Hemsworth) and the core of... Italo Ferreira?
While the 2019 World Surfing Champion and Olympic gold medalist may not be spoken about in such hallowed terms as Arnie and co. when it comes to lifting, this week he took to Instagram to share a 'hard core' workout that puts everything else we've seen this week to shame.
Ferreira posted a video of himself hanging from a ladder, being punched repeatedly in the abs by a woman with gloves. In doing so he demonstrated a simple yet effective ab shredding technique everyone really ought to know by now – if you want abs of steel you should be doing more than just sit ups (Harvard studies have even shown sit ups can be very hard on the spine and potentially damaging).
Watch Italo Ferreira's 'hard core' workout in the video below.
The caption? "Quando a gata pede pra bater" – which translates to: "When the cat asks to hit."
Fellow surfer Kalani Robb commented: "Looks like married life."
Ex UFC champion Rodrigo Nogueira wrote: "Os amigos podem?" ("can friends?").
Big wave surfer Carlos Burle wrote: "Solido."
World skimboard champion Lucas Fink said: "Doido é doido" ("crazy is crazy").
Artist Nissin wrote: "hard core."
Speaking of strong stomachs, this isn't the only ab busting workout Italo has shared in recent times.
On September the 9th he shared an image of himself pushing an exercise band above his head with both his hands – an exercise where engaging the core is crucial – with the caption "discipline."

On August the 5th, Italo posted an image of a full-body involving workout – kettle bell swings.

There you have it – sit-ups are for suckers. If you want abs of steel; introduce some variety into your workout, and understand that six-packs are a consequence of a good all-around workout routine, and are rarely achieved in isolation. Plus: keep things fun and you are more likely to stick at it.

Over the last eighteen months, while we've all been bunkering down at home avoiding The Spicy Cough, we've seen a number of Netflix shows become huge international phenomena.
First, it was Tiger King, the improbable murder-mystery documentary about a larger-than-life exotic animal dealer. Then, we had Bridgerton, the Downton Abbey-esque romantic drama about Regency-era London debutantes. Now, it's Squid Game: a Korean survival horror thriller that's made waves for its nail-biting action and biting social commentary on South Korean society.
With Halloween just around the corner, you can bet your bottom dollar you'll see plenty of kids wearing the show's iconic pink hazmat suits and green tracksuits... But it seems one celebrity has got ahead of the curve.
Nick Jonas, the youngest Jonas Brother and normally the most fashion-foward of the three, was spotted out and about in New York City late last week wearing a tracksuit jacket that immediately brings to mind the ghoulish uniform Squid Games' unfortunate contestants are forced to wear during the murderous eponymous tournament.
[caption id="attachment_303579" align="alignnone" width="920"] Jonas in NYC last week, and Park Hae-soo as Cho Sang-woo in Squid Game, wearing the now-iconic tracksuit. Images: Getty / Netflix[/caption]
Jonas rounded off the look with some pinstriped pants (which gave off more 'baseball coach' vibes than Squid Game vibes), as well as a watch that Squid Games' contestants could only dream of being able to afford: his rose gold Richard Mille RM11-01 Automatic Flyback Chronograph “Roberto Mancini”.

Of course, it's unlikely that Jonas was thinking about Squid Game when he got dressed that morning, but the resemblance is uncanny. Sure, the colour's off, but the white name badge stripe, high collar and thick white piping are very similar to the tracksuits seen in the show.
The Jonas Brothers are currently performing around the United States on their ‘Remember This’ tour, with their next show scheduled for later today in Holmdel, New Jersey – a town close to New York City. The tour, which has already crisscrossed across most of the United States, finishes up in December. We doubt the boys have had much time to Netflix binge, but if they do get a moment, we'd highly recommend they check out Squid Game.
If only so that they don't continue dressing like the characters...

Millions of people around the world were annoyed this morning (or last night, depending on where you live) when they realised their favourite source of dopamine was unresponsive.
With Facebook and Instagram down, thousands of people turned to Reddit to discuss what on earth was going on. This discussion then morphed into a discussion on how The Zuck Machine going down had actually improved many peoples' lives.
The Pew Research centre suggests 7/10 of American adults use Facebook and 4/10 American adults use Instagram.
To put this in perspective, Pew Research states that: "With the exception of YouTube – the video-sharing site used by 81% of adults – no other major online platform comes close to Facebook in terms of usage."
"Four-in-ten adults report using Instagram, while around three-in-ten use Pinterest (31%) and LinkedIn (28%). A quarter of adults or fewer use Snapchat, Twitter, WhatsApp, TikTok, Reddit and Nextdoor. Facebook owns Instagram and WhatsApp."
You'd think it would be a major blow when there's an outage then. Commercially it was. But for many individuals, the break was refreshing.
On a Reddit thread entitled: "How is everyone enjoying Reddit while Instagram Facebook and whatsapp are all down?" one user wrote: "World may actually be a slightly better place for a little while. Like, minutes, but better is better."
Another said: "I thought my internet was the problem. Turns out the universe is just sending me a sign to stop mindlessly scrolling through someone else's timeline."
Another shared: "I’ve actually been reading a book most of the day instead of scrolling Facebook and Instagram and thinking to myself 'Why am I not doing this regularly?!'"
"I'm supposed to be doing social media work on my day off, so it sounds like a good day to me!" said another.
Another revelation shared on the thread sparked terror into many social media users. Reddit user u/bautron admitted: "I actually made a call today."
"A PHONE call."
One commenter on the thread then asked: "what, like...with your voice? is that a new feature or something?"
Others reminisced about previous wholesome internet moments.
"Remember the summer of 2016 when everyone was just playing Pokemon Go? Like the whole world just forgot about all their differences and just walked around catching Pokemon."
Others were a little more cynical. One wrote: "As long as I have something to scroll endlessly with ads and strong opinions I feel alive."
Another spicy comment was as follows: "A lot of very bored people are now wondering why they're so dependent on those media."
"This reminds me of the time my 12 year old and her best friend got walkies talkies so they could talk instead of texting."
"Didn’t know they were down but that explains why my friend stopped replying all of a sudden… I hope."
It wasn't just those in the US and around the world sharing how this outage has affected them.
Watch TikTok user @survivethemania's video below, to learn how social media (basically) destroys our brains.
Tottenham football player Lucas Moura joked: "With the fall of Whatsapp and Instagram I was able to talk with my wife. Very nice person she is."

The world of Twitter also provided some light comedic relief too, with the official Twitter account of the Empire State Building writing: "I do not care about Facebook being down. I am literally a building."

The official account of Twitter itself wrote (gloatingly): "hello literally everyone."
The BBC reports that Facebook, WhatsApp and Instagram are now coming back after the 6 hour outage.
"Downdetector, which tracks outages, said it was the largest failure it had ever seen, with 10.6 million problem reports around the world," the BBC reports.
"The last time Facebook had a disruption of this magnitude was in 2019," (BBC).
If this brief putting of social media on ice has you wondering what would happen if the tech giants disappeared forever, you're not the first person to have wondered this. The question has been pondered many times (ironically) online before on such forums as Quora, Social Media Today and Reader's Digest.
Though many believe if Facebook fell another equivalent would simply rise up in its place, that's not the only theory.
In response to the Quora question "What would happen if Facebook suddenly vanished?" one user guessed: "The worldwide 'brain drain' issue would be significantly negated."
Social Media Today has written about this same hypothetical, claiming: "Users would find new homes, and businesses would follow."
"Facebook had 1.5 billion active users as of October, a 23% increase since March 2013. If Facebook fell, the torch would be passed - perhaps to Google+, or maybe an up-and-coming social site, (Socal Media Today).
"Businesses that market on Facebook aren't going to let 1.5 billion potential customers walk out the door without following them."
Reader's Digest claimed in February that we'd be happier if social media disappeared, citing a European study.
They wrote: "In 2015, scientists at Copenhagen’s Happiness Research Institute released their findings from a study of 1,095 daily Facebook users, half of whom took a research-imposed break from the site for seven days."
"The results: 'After one week without Facebook, the treatment group reported a significantly higher level of life satisfaction,' according to the study. The participants weren’t only happier; they also said they felt more enthusiastic and more decisive, and they enjoyed life more," (Reader's Digest).
